APRIL 30, 2002, EDITION

 

Edgar Marston

Edgar Marston, 63, of Morrisville, Vt., died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Burlington, Vt., of complications from cancer.

His mother, Florence "Flivver" Carr, and stepfather, Granville Barclay, were former Big Horn residents, and Mr. Marston worked on his mother’s Hidden Valley Ranch in Big Horn before enlisting in the Army in 1970.

A memorial service will be at a later date at St. John’s in the Mountains in Stowe, Vt.

Survivors include a sister, Joan Lauder.

Wilma Meyer

Sheridan County native Wilma Eva Schedlock Meyer, 88, died Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Albuquerque, N.M.

She was born Oct. 10, 1913. She graduated from Dayton Junior High School and Sheridan High School and received her licensed practical nurse degree by correspondence course from the Chicago School of Nursing.

She worked for Dr. Richard E. Crane in Sheridan for many years, then moved to New York City, where she worked 20 years for Yale Nursing Service.

She spent time in New York with her nephew, Sheridan native and composer Dede C. Meyer, and enjoyed an acquaintance with musician Sammy Kaye.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Maurice, and a son, Jerome Maurice.

Survivors include a daughter, Cherrill M. Whitlow of Albuquerque; a sister, Amy I.S. Coffin of Dillon, Mont.; and a granddaughter.

Jane Morris

Jane Shirley Morris, 75, of Sheridan, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center.

Private graveside services will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the American Cancer Society in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan.

Harriett Neighbors

Harriett Neighbors, 85, Sheridan, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Cremation and private services have taken place in accordance with her wishes. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home.

Mrs. Neighbors was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Sheridan to Harry and Gladys (Birkhauser) Churchill. After graduating from high school, she married Elvern Neighbors on July 15, 1935, in Buffalo.

She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where she belonged to the Altar Guild and Vestry.

She enjoyed her family, playing cards and games of chance, gardening, travel, school sports, and feeding the animals around her home. She was willing to "bet you a dollar" on almost anything, and said she would have loved to be a football player.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Merrill and Susan Baggett, both of Sheridan; a son, Tom, Sheridan; a sister, Joan Hunter, Dallas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

William Leibee

BUFFALO – William Maxwell Leibee, 86, of Buffalo died Friday, April 26, 2002, at the Amie Holt Care Center.

Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Danny Francis officiating.

Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery.

Jane Shirley Morris, 75, Sheridan, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Robert Mossberger

Robert Lee Mossberger, 49, of Sheridan died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Cremation has taken place, and private family services will be at a later date. Interment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver with military honors.

Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Mossberger was born Jan. 29, 1953, to Robert H. and Bonnie (Wilcox) Mossberger in Denver. He entered the U.S. Army after high school.

He moved to Sheridan nine months ago from South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his mother, Bonnie J. Hall; and three brothers, Steve, Joe and Ben.

Harriet Neighbors, 85, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Willo Chase

Graveside committal of cremains of Willo A. Chase, 75, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Mrs. Chase died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Her full obituary was published in the April 19 Sheridan Press.

Faye Sherwood

Faye R. Sherwood, 87, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sherwood was born Oct. 24, 1914, in Bowling Green, Ohio, to Robert and Carolyn (Walker) Emmitt.

She graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in English literature.

She married Edwin M. Sherwood March 19, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio. They moved to Sheridan two years ago to be near their daughter.

Mrs. Sherwood was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader and a Brownie troop leader.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, long walks, swimming and painting in oil and watercolor. She loved spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000 and by a sister, Roberta French, and a brother, Hugh Emmitt.

Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Van Putten of Story; two sons, Edwin of Dublin, Ohio, and Paul of Tallvast, Fla.; a sister, Betty Chaconas of Isle of Palms, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rhoda Peterson

Rhoda C. Peterson, 88, of Sheridan died Monday, April 22, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Viewing will be all day Friday at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Plentywood, Mont.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Plentywood Lutheran Church with Pastor Dave Curtright and Joan Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Plentywood Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Peterson was born March 14, 1914, in Portland, N.D., to Odin and Betsy (Kvernen) Knutson.

She grew up and attended schools in Portland and worked as a housekeeper until she married Sylvan Peterson July 2, 1934.

They farmed until 1968, when they moved to Plentywood. Mrs. Peterson owned and operated a retail store in her home there. She belonged to Plentywood Lutheran Church.

She moved to Wyoming in 1999.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983 and by two brothers, Oscar and Abner Knutson.

Survivors include two sons, Sylvan of Richmond, Minn., and Delmaine of Williston, N.D.; a daughter, Rosemary Sullivan of Sheridan; three brothers, Marvel Guttormson of Portland, Leroy Guttormson of Underwood, Minn., and Jennings Guttormson of Elbow Lake, Minn.; a sister, Ovidia Holdorson of Eau Claire, Wis.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit Plentywood Lutheran Church.

H.D. Morrison

H. Darwin Morrison, 83, owner of the Home Ranch south of Sheridan, died Monday, April 15, 2002, in Freeland, Wash.

He was father of Wayne Morrison of Sheridan.

Graveside service was April 20 at the Langley (Wash.) Cemetery. Arrangements were with Visser Funeral Home.

Mr. Morrison was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Carson City, Nev., to George Leo and Andrea Viola Morrison. He grew up in Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.

He married Leona Stanley in 1939; they divorced after 30 years. He married Helen Terry Crandall in 1973 in Lincoln City, Ore. She died March 27.

In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Colleen Fitzpatrick of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Mary Kramer of Cypress, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Roy Merrill

BUFFALO – Former Buffalo resident Roy Alvin Merrill, 66, of Clearfield, Utah, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Ogden, Utah, Regional Hospital after a long illness.

Cremation has taken place.

Lyndall L. Callender

 

Lyndall Lee Callender, 62, of Sheridan died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of her life will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Ms. Callender was born Jan. 24, 1940, in Butler, Pa., to Beryl Callender. She grew up in Butler. She married Elmer Kuball March 29, 1971, and moved to Wyoming that year.

She was an award-winning professional artist who was named the Charles M. Russell Art Exhibition’s “Outstanding Artist.” She was known for helping others recognize their own talents, especially young artists.

She belonged to the Sheridan Artists’ Guild, Wyoming Artists’ Association, and Life Is For Thriving cancer-support group.

She was influenced by American Indian spirituality and enjoyed family and friends, reading, games, driving down country roads, traveling the Southwest with her husband, camping and the Big Horn Mountains. She hiked to the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Robert Miller of Sheridan, Douglas Miller of Pine Bluffs, and Brian Miller of Silver City, N.M.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may benefit Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library in care of Sheridan State Bank.

 

Sara Wolfe

 

Sheridan native Sara Nicole Wolfe, 17, of Moorcroft died Saturday, April 20, 2002, of injuries suffered in a car accident.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Rozet Cemetery.

Visit-ation is 3-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ms. Wolfe was born Feb. 17, 1985, in Sheridan to John and Candace (Sullivan) Wolfe.

She was raised in Rozet and attended Rozet Elementary School. She was attending Moorcroft High School at the time of her death.

She was active in FCCLA family, careers and community group; Spanish Club; and choir. She enjoyed attending rodeos and the bull wars, dances and country music. She also enjoyed comedy shows, animals, pictures of tigers and collecting Winnie the Pooh.

She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Henry and Lyla Sullivan.

Survivors include her parents of Rozet; three brothers, Shaun of Rozet, Cory of Casper and Jason of Kansas City, Kan.; and grandparents Sam and Betty Wolfe of Rozet.

Memorials may be made to the D.A.R.E. program through Moorcroft High School, in care of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home, 210 W. Fifth St., Gillette, WY 82716.

 

Lillian Harrod

 

Sheridan native Lillian Harrod, 80, of Gillette died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Funeral services were Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Joel Wright officiating.

Burial was in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Arrangements were with Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Harrod was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Sheridan to Ott and Lillian (Reed) Ritter.

She was a 1939 graduate of Campbell County High School.

She married LaVern Harrold July 6, 1941, in Gillette.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Myron.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Lee of Hopewell, N.J.; a daughter, Linda Neiffer of Gillette; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edward J. Pinder

 

Edward J. Pinder, 71, of Sheridan died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in Sheridan Manor.

Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating.

Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pinder was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Sheridan to Paul and Mary (Kobielusz) Pinder. He attended schools in the Sheridan area and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Mary Rucki Sept. 3, 1954, in Sheridan. He worked at Wyoming Sawmills, Husman Construction and Decker Coal. Mrs. Pinder died in 1993.

He enjoyed ranching, fishing, hunting, cooking and spending time with his grandchildren. He belonged to United Mine Workers and Elks Lodge No. 520.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul.

Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Stites of Sheridan and Dawn Maier of Lolo, Mont.; a sister, Ann Scheel of Follette, Tenn.; a half brother, Gene Dolinar of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Elks Lodge No. 520.

 

Jacob Shelby Black

 

Jacob Shelby Black, 23, of Sheridan died Monday, April 22, 2002, at his mother’s residence in Billings.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith’s West Funeral chapel in Billings. Viewing will precede the service at 9:30 a.m.

Lunch will be served following the service.

Services in Sheridan are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Viewing will precede the service at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn with lunch following at the Big Horn Woman’s Club.

Rhoda Clarissa Peterson, 88, of Sheridan died Monday, April 22, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Plentywood Lutheran Church in Plentywood, Mont., with burial in the Plentywood Cemetery.

Cameron Hardee

Cameron Eugene Hardee, 66, of Walla Walla, Wash., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at his home. He was father of Janis Crane of Dayton. Cremation took place, and the family held memorial services with private burial. Arrangements were with Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Mr. Hardee was born Feb. 7, 1936, in Cody to Earld and Martha Gail Hardee. He attended school in Wyoming. He married Ilah Frances Matheney Oct. 10, 1959, in Gooding, Idaho. He was a missile maintenance man in the U.S. Air Force until 1974, when he retired. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeri. Survivors include his wife; a second daughter, Cindy Meade of Kahlotus, Wash.; three sons, Floyd of Marys Lake, Fla., Chuck of Meade, Wash., and Bruce of Milton-Freewater, Wash.; a sister, Joan, and a brother, Gail, both of Rawlins; and 10 grandchildren. Patrick John Ryan

Former Sheridan resident Patrick John Ryan, 41, Nokomis, Ill., died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, in Nokomis. Services were April 17 in Nokomis. Kane Funeral home handled local arrangements. Mr. Ryan was born April 27, 1960, to Willard “Bill” and Bess (Dvorak) Ryan in Geneva, Ill. He attended high school in Stonington, Ill. He then moved to Big Piney and Casper. He worked various construction jobs throughout the state. He loved being with his children, fishing and playing darts. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Nokomis; a brother, Michael Ryan of Nokomis; two sons, James of Nokomis, and Michael Westika of Sheridan; and two daughters, Jessica Cartwright of Casper and Nysha Westika of Sheridan.

Daisy D. Reimers

Daisy D. Reimers, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place and memorial services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Reimers was born July 22, 1920, to Perry and Bessie (Imbler) Barnes in Sheridan. Following graduation from Sheridan High School, she worked for the Staples Dude Ranch, the Fordyce family at the Bar 13 Ranch, the Costello family at the Hidden Valley Ranch, the 3-T Ranch, and others, She also worked as an area clerk for the Soil Conservation Service, retiring after 20 years. She marred Phillip B. Reimers Nov. 7, 1975, in Sheridan. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, especially roses, furniture restoration, sewing, music and playing the piano and guitar. She also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and was a member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest J. “Ernie” Barnes, and a grandson. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Daniel Daniels and Bill D. Caskey, both of Sheridan; six stepchildren, Rod Reimers, Irene Sessions and Vonnie Reimers of Sheridan, Russell Reimers of Billings, Terry Reimers near Lake DeSmet and Mike Reimers of Springhill, Fla.; two brothers, Perry “Junior” Barnes Jr. of Casper and Franklin “Jay” Barnes of Sheridan; and 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Doris Arlene Moody

Doris Arlene Moody, 64, of Sheridan died Friday, April 19, 2002, at her home of complications from breast cancer. A viewing is 6-8 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Private family interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at a later date. Mrs. Moody was born Dec. 6, 1937, on a ranch near Newcastle to Cecil and Inez (Coons) Brown. She attended Upton High School. Later, she was active as an adult learner with the Literacy Volunteers of America. Her more than 30-year involvement with First Congregational Church of Sheridan included participation in the Plymouth Ladies Circle. She came to Sheridan in 1967. She married Elmer C. Moody June 10, 1968, in the Presbyterian Church in Moorcroft. Survivors include her husband; her mother, Inez Brown of Rexburg, Idaho; one son, Matthew of Sheridan; one daughter, Cristina Moody of Watertown, Mass.; one grandson; two brothers, Wesley Brown of Colorado and Richard Brown of Victor, Idaho; and one sister, Dorothy Galloway of Midland, Texas. Faye Sherwood, 82, Story, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Arrangements are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Marie E. Scheuer

Former Sheridan and Big Horn resident Marie Ellen Scheuer, 75, of Lakeside, Calif., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Services are 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lakeside. Born June 9, 1926, in Clay Center, Kan., to Ben and Vera Allgire, she moved with her family to Sheridan in 1929. She attended Big Horn High School and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1944. She also attended Montana State University in Billings and the universities of Wyoming and New Mexico. She returned to Wyoming, where she taught one year on Cat Creek and the next year at Wamsutter. She also taught school in Albuquerque and Pojaque, N.M. She married John Scheuer in 1949 in Albuquerque. They moved to San Diego in 1966. Mrs. Scheuer taught special education in Chula Vista, Calif., public schools. She also sold real estate and, from 1970 until her death, owned a brokerage. A brother, Donald, and a sister, JoAnn, preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Darleen Anderson, Sheridan; and five children, Sue, John and Joe Scheuer, all of San Diego, Cindy Spears, Clearwater, Fla., and Bill Scheuer, Albuquerque.

Margaret Draine

Margaret A. Draine, 79, of Sheridan died Friday, April 19, 2002, in Sheridan Manor.
Graveside committal of cremains will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo, with John Christian officiating.
Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Mrs. Draine was born March 30, 1923, in Buffalo to Herman and Anna (Askov) Christenson.
She grew up on the family ranch near Kaycee and graduated from high school in Buffalo.
She was a graduate of Great Falls Business College in Montana.
She worked at a military base in Albuquerque, N.M., during World War II. After the war she worked for True Oil Co. in Casper.
She married Harry T. Draine March 6, 1948, in Sheridan. They ranched in the Sheridan area until they moved to Gillette.
Mr. Draine died in 1971, and Mrs. Draine moved to Sheridan in 1972 and worked for Mid Continent Oil Co. until she retired.
She enjoyed reading and was an avid Wyoming Cowboys and Denver Broncos football fan.
Survivors include two daughters, Jody Fay of Sheridan and Terry Draine of Los Angeles; a brother, Walt Christenson of Buffalo; and two grandchildren.

Charles Conrad

A private family memorial service will be at a later date for Charles Daniel “Danny” Conrad, 45, of Story.
Mr. Conrad died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in Story.
He was born July 20, 1956, in Newcastle to Dinah Daniel Conrad and Clayton R. Conrad.
He grew up in Gillette and attended Campbell County High School. He was a member of the Gillette Camels football and basketball teams.
After high school, he spent two years working for Conrad Construction Co., then spent a year in Texas with his grandmother while attending Kilgore (Texas) Junior College.
He worked in Powder River Basin oil and gas fields as well as gold and silver mines in the Colorado Front Range and Black Hills of South Dakota.
He moved to a cabin in Story several years ago and worked as a fence-builder and handyman.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Dinah and Zen Merritt; his grandmother, Mattie Daniel; a sister; a half brother; and a stepbrother and stepsister.

Robert Irwin “Bob” Diefenderfer Jr., 77, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Lucas officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery followed by a reception at Sheridan Wesleyan Church. Mr. Diefenderfer was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Bozeman, Mont., to Robert and Gladys (Johnson) Diefenderfer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged after four years. He married Maxine McAlister Nov. 9, 1946, and they moved to Sheridan soon after. He operated several Army surplus stores in Montana and Wyoming and was involved in many business ventures, including real estate and mining. He enjoyed raising racehorses. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his children. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Bobby Lee. Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Koltiska and Kim Shackelford, both of Sheridan; six sons, Michael of Denver, Daniel of Sheridan, Steve of Laurel, Mont., Tracy of Billings, Tyler of Buffalo and David Bruce of South Dakota; a sister, Anna Lee Dotson of Livingston, Mont.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Allen was born June 25, 1933, in Watertown, S.D., to Herman and Esther (Krause) Wenschlag. Several years after graduating from high school, she married Albert R. Allen in Winterhaven, Calif. She moved to Sheridan recently to be near a daughter. She enjoyed sewing, travel and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband. Vera M. Appel, 91, of Gillette died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. She was sister of Irene Reed of Sheridan. Funeral Liturgy was 11 a.m. today at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church with Father Tom Kadera as celebrant. Visitation was Monday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Appel was born Feb. 14, 1911, in Doniphan, Neb., to Ed and Pearl (Robb) Harrod. The family moved to Campbell County when she was 4 years old. She graduated from Campbell County High School in 1929, then took normal training and taught until she married William J. “Bill” Appel June 15, 1938, in Custer, S.D. She taught from 1951 to 1973, when she retired. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Black Hills Teachers College in 1962. Other survivors include her husband; a son, Bill of Gillette; two daughters, Eileen Suchor of Gillette and Audrey Reed of Billings; two brothers, Lawrence Harrod of Casper and Lonnie Harrod of Danville, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. Jean Petrey

Jean A. Petrey, 91, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at her residence. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Mrs. Petrey was born Oct. 2, 1910, in Atlanta, Ga., to James and Mabel Oglesby. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia, with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She married John F. Petrey in Lake Wales, Fla., in 1947. She worked as an actress for a time. She was a member of the Sheridan Senior Center and was active in the senior center choir. She was a member of the Bel Aire Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles.

Samuel Morrison

Former Sheridan resident Samuel “Ferris” Morrison, 60, of Wheatland died Thursday, April 11, 2002, in United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wheatland Junior High School with the Rev. Delbert Dick officiating. Inurnment with military graveside rites by the Wyoming Air National Guard Flag Heritage Team will be in the Wheatland Cemetery. Platte Funeral Chapel of Wheatland is handling arrangements. Mr. Morrison was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Thomas and Susan (McCaskill) Morrison. The family immigrated to the United States, settling in Sheridan, when he was 7 years old. He was raised and educated in Sheridan and later attended Sheridan Community College before receiving undergraduate and master’s degrees in teaching from the University of Wyoming. He married Kathryn E. Schnaible Aug. 14, 1971, in Rapid City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and taught more than 30 years in the Platte County School District at Wheatland. He also coached track and was junior high school principal for the past year. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, James. Survivors include a son, Ian of Mills. Former Sheridan resident Effie Mae Widick, 81, of Dayton, Wash., died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Dayton General Hospital. Cremation has taken place with arrangements by Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home, and private inurnment is planned at Willamet National Cemetery. Mrs. Widick was born March 21, 1921, in Bay Horse, Mont., to James and Maude Likes Boggess. She grew up and attended school in Big Horn. She married Dale Widick Dec. 28, 1947, in Sheridan, and they lived here until his death in 1984. Mrs. Widick enjoyed outdoor activities and latch-hooking rugs and pillow cases. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Boggess. Survivors include a son, Bill Hibbs of Dayton, Wash.; a daughter, Sue Bridwell of Hillsboro, Ore.; a sister, Sarah Carr of Arlington, Kan.; and two grandchildren.

Leroy V. Fradet

Leroy V. Fradet, 81, of Sheridan died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at his residence. A rosary is 7 p.m. Sunday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mr. Fradet was born July 1, 1920, to Lawrence and Evelyn (Fredette) Fradet in Berlin, N.D. In 1939, he became an apprentice at Western Steel in Sheridan, and later worked at Eaton Sheetmetal in Billings. He also worked at the Tacoma, Wash., shipyards. He married Katherine B. Banich at St. James Cathedral in Seattle May 25, 1942. He was the first man from Wyoming to join the Ship Repair Unit of the U.S. Navy May 24, 1944, serving as a shipfitter, second class, until Nov. 6, 1945, when he was honorably discharged. The couple moved to Sheridan in 1945, where they opened the Columbus Plumbing and Heating Co. He ran the company until he retired in 1996. He loved fishing, traveling and flying. He owned his own plane and held a private pilot’s license. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, American Legion, Knights of Columbus (4th degree Knight) and a life member of the Elks. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Barbara D. Foley of Wiggins, Colo.; two sisters, Angelin Bjerknes and Delores Cass, both of Billings; a brother, John, of Sheridan; numerous half brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Olvie B. Sathren

Olvie B. Sathren, 92, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Catron-Osheim Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City with Pastor Don Brendtro officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Sathren was born July 31, 1909, to Ole and Mathilda (Nelson) Sathren in Temvik, N.D. Following school, he worked as a small-engine and diesel mechanic. He married Magdalena ‘Maggie’ Schnaible in Willow City, N.D., in 1938, and the couple resided in Linton, N.D. In 1943, they moved to Rapid City, where they lived until moving to Sheridan in July 1993 to be near their daughter, Sandra Hoffman. He was an avid fisherman and loved music. He played the accordion in numerous bands at weddings and dances and on the radio. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City and the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was preceded in death by his wife on Feb. 28; four brothers, Leonard, Dewey, Arthur and Clarence; and one sister, Alma Omodt. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra, of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Gwinavere Quillen

Gwinavere Newell Quillen, 83, Sheridan, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. She was born June 23, 1918, in Chadron, Neb., to Earl and Ann (Mrizek) Newell. She lived in Sheridan most of her life except for 15 years in Douglas. In 1940, she married Don Adams. They were later divorced. She then married Bob Quillen in 1966. He died in 2001. Mrs. Quillen was an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan, past president of the Wyoming State Chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood and past president of Sheridan County Republic Women. She was also a board member of Life Link of Sheridan County, and had chaired the Miss Indian America pageant here and the committee for Junior Women’s Club that initiated kindergarten in Sheridan. While in Douglas she was the secretary/manager of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce and was the first woman president of Wyoming Chamber of Commerce Executives. A knowledgeable Sheridan historian, Mrs. Quillen was well-known for her tole painting and as an avid gardener who shared many of her plants with others. She also enjoyed golf and bridge. She is survived by four children, Robert Newell Adams of Laramie, Gwinavere Adams Johnston of Denver; Thomas John Adams of Spokane, Wash., and Mary Adams Apple of Rawlins; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Shea “Beth” Herbst, 21, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 7, 2002, of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ron Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ms. Herbst was born May 6, 1980, in Laramie. The family moved later that year to Torrington, where she attended school. She moved to Coos Bay, Ore., in 1992 and was a 1998 graduate of North Bend High School. She moved to Sheridan in 1999 to attend Sheridan College. She worked for Big Horn Mountain Sports in Sheridan. She enjoyed outdoor activities, especially wake boarding, four-wheeling, horseback riding, mountain biking and snowboarding, and pursued those activities around the country. She also enjoyed creating pen and charcoal sketches, painting and watercolors. She was awarded best in show for a watercolor entry in the North Bend High School annual art show. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandfathers. Survivors include her mother, Patricia L. Davis of Coos Bay; her father and stepmother, John and Sherri Herbst of Torrington; a sister, Erin of Torrington; five brothers, J.R. of Portland, Ore., Andrew of San Diego, Brandt and Blake, both of Torrington, and Chris Gruen of Coos Bay; grandmothers Dolly Elliott of Yuma, Ariz., and Della Herbst of Sheridan; and grandparents Russell and Joan Shannon of Yoder. Elwood David

Elwood “Woody” David, 74, of Sheridan died Monday, April 8, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Terral Bearden officiating. Mr. David was born Feb. 12, 1928, in Sheridan to Jonas and Erma (Branch) David. He married Phyllis Ridley in 1946 in Forsyth, Mont. He married Bobbi J. Williams in 1965 in Billings, and they made their home in Sheridan. Mr. David ranched at Decker, Mont., and rode rough stock and raced wild horses on the rodeo circuit. He was self-employed as a logger in the Big Horn Mountains and worked as a heavy-duty mechanic for Decker Coal until retiring 15 years ago. After leaving Decker Coal, he worked construction in South America. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1475 in Lusk. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; three daughters, Melody A. Newell of Esterbrook, Merry J. Potter of Sheridan and Faye R. Potter of Rapid City; a son, Van of Big Horn; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Everett Smith

Everett Mathew “Bud” Smith, 63, of Sheridan died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Lee. Mr. Smith was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Belfield, N.D. His family moved to Sheridan while he was a child, and he was a 1956 graduate of Sheridan High School. He entered the Navy in 1957 and worked as a line crew chief on fighter jet aircraft until his honorable discharge. He married Helen L. Hobbs in December 1961. They divorced in 1978. He married Kim Gillis in May 1997. He worked at a variety of professions, including being one of the initial participants in Boeing’s 737 aircraft program in Renton, Wash. He returned to Sheridan to work for Texaco Inc. and was an inspector on the Lake DeSmet upgrade project. He operated the Lake DeSmet Lodge and Marina for several years. He spent the last 24 years working in Sheridan for Ed Hammer Inc. He enjoyed a number of hobbies including woodworking and taxidermy. Survivors include his wife, Kim; two sons, Terry and Michael of Austin, Texas; his mother, Pat Smith of Sheridan; three brothers, Richard of Sheridan, Jerry of Orlando, Fla., and Allen of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Peni Riesen of Sheridan; a grandson; and three great-grandchildren. Richard Marshall “Dick” Smith, 61, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at his residence. Graveside committal services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Elks Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 21, 1940, in Sheridan to Juanita E. (Wallace) and Charles W. Smith. He was a 1959 graduate of Sheridan High School. Wesley Stites

Former Sheridan resident the Rev. Wesley Sherwood Stites, 88, of Jesup, Ga., died Friday, March 22, 2002, in the Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick after an extended illness. Funeral services were March 24 in the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Appling County with the Rev. Esther Perkins officiating. He was a retired minister of the Church of the Nazarene. He was a native of Jackson County, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Ann Fry, three sisters and a twin brother. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve of Jesup; two daughters, Nellouise Fry of Sheridan and Bonnie Jean Deal of Screven; a son, Wesley Kenneth of Kansas City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Earl Kwallek

DAYTON — Earl Benjaman “Bud” Kwallek, 78, of Dayton died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his residence. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Dayton Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Kwallek was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Beach, N.D., to Benjaman and Dora (Stedman) Kwallek. He attended Ranchester High School. He married Beverley Brookins Dec. 7, 1947, in Lovell. He worked for the Padlock Ranch 45 years. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, the mountains, and woodworking. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1944 to May 1945 in the 10th Mountain Division. He received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen Parker of Marshallville, Ga., and Debbie Kwallek of Gillette; three sons, Bob of Jackson, Rich of Gillette and Dan of Laveen, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The Rev. Wesley S. Stites, 88, of Jesup, Ga., died Friday, March 22, 2002, in Brunswick, Ga., after an extended illness. Mabel Simpson

Mabel F. Simpson, 90, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Simpson was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Ellendale, N.D., to Lester and Susie (Rose) Taylor. She attended schools in Aberdeen, S.D., and lived in Michigan and Montana before marrying Floyd “Doc” Simpson April 11, 1930, in Aberdeen. They came to Sheridan in 1947. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981 and by a son, Jerry, and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Rideout of Sheridan; two sisters, Josephine Moore of Big Horn and Grace McCome of Arvada, Colo.; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Harold A. Foltz

Harold Alfred Foltz, 80, brother of Don Foltz of Sheridan, died Friday, March 29, 2002, of natural causes at Pioneer Manor in Gillette, where he had resided since 2000. At his request, no services are planned. Private burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D. Born Nov. 20, 1921, in Upton to William and Mildred Foltz, he grew up there and graduated from Upton High School in 1940. He served in the Army in World War II. He married Virginia Kroeber on Aug. 14, 1943, in Colorado Springs, Colo. They moved to Lusk, where they ran a grocery until moving to Upton, where they operated a motel. Mr. Foltz also worked as a carpenter and drove a truck for Materi Exploration, retiring in 1982. He was Upton’s first fire chief. He belonged to the Upton gun club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Gillette; four daughters, Carol Richardson, Rochester, N.Y., Margery Moore, San Francisco, Georgia Befus, Rawlins, and June Claar, Fernly, Nev.; a second brother, Ralph Foltz, Bremerton, Wash.; a sister, Ruth Griffin, Newcastle; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Gertrude Reese

Gertrude L. Reese, 97, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 31, 2002, in Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Nelson officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic 43 section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Reese was born April 21, 1904, in Rembrandt, Iowa, to Martin and Anna (Sorenson) Olsen. She grew up and attended schools in Iowa. She was a 1928 graduate of Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis and worked in VA hospitals in Sheridan and Tacoma, Wash. She married Norman Reese in June 1936 in Tacoma. They moved to Sheridan, and she returned to work at the Sheridan VA Hospital until retiring in 1970. She belonged to Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and was past president of the Wyoming Nurse’s Association. She enjoyed playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968 and by four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include a son, Roger, of Sheridan; one sister, Mary Kacmarynski, of Mallard, Iowa; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Yager

Robert Arthur “Jigger” Yager, 55, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at his home after a battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Eagles 4196, 1760 Commercial Ave., with Pastor Allen Zeigler presiding. Services will be followed by a fellowship. Michael Karni

Dr. Michael Gary Karni, 60, of New Brighton, Minn., died in March 2002 at Fairview University Medical Center of complications from lymphoma. He was brother of Elaine Avery of Sheridan and Yvonne Prill of Ranchester. Visitation was March 24 at the family home in New Brighton. Arrangements were with the Cremation Society of Minnesota. Jane C. Fowler

Jane C. Fowler, 88, of Sheridan died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. At her request, no services will be held. Mrs. Fowler was born Nov. 13, 1913, to Benjamin and Cecilia (Tarbell) Crangle in Minneapolis. Following high school, she married Charles W. Fowler of Sheridan in 1934. She worked as a secretary for Sunkist Products for 40 years and retired in 1985. Mrs. Fowler was preceded in death by her husband in 1952 and her brother, John Crangle. Survivors include two daughters, Lexy C. Fowler of Sheridan and Frances Cooper-Saunders of Escondido, Calif.; two sons, John W. Fowler of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Peter T. Fowler of Ramona, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Glenn Workman

Glenn C. Workman, 87, of Sheridan died Friday, March 29, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Mr. Workman was born March 13, 1915, in Bayard, Neb., to Paul and Ruth Workman. The family moved to Wyoming when he was 2 years old. He attended schools in Sheridan County and the Decker, Mont., area, and worked on ranches here. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in Troop B of the 115th Cavalry Division. He married Selma Peabody in July 1942, and after he was discharged from military service, they bought a ranch on Big Goose Creek and operated a small dairy farm. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, a brother and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, John and Bill, both of Logan, Utah; a daughter, Judy Hayworth of Colstrip, Mont.; a sister, Pauline Holmes of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Cecil Bilyeu

Cecil Lynn Bilyeu, 90, of Sheridan died Thursday, March 28, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral liturgy was today at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Robert Fox as celebrant. Burial of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Bilyeu was born Feb. 22, 1912, in Sheridan to Charles W. and Mae (Murray) Bilyeu. He grew up in Sheridan and attended Sheridan schools. He married Marie Klinkosh June 31, 1932, in Hardin, Mont. He was a steamfitter, plumber and maintenance supervisor for the VA hospitals in Sheridan and Roseburg, Ore., for 47 years. The Bilyeus moved to Harlowton, Mont., after he retired, then returned to Sheridan in 1995. Mr. Bilyeu enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting antiques and raising animals. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995, four brothers and five sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Radford of Sheridan; a sister, Doris Cook of Kennewick, Wash.; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
