Lewis Tippets

DAYTON — Lewis Lyman Tippets, 78, of Dayton died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Deadwood, S.D., while visiting his son. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Cowley Cemetery. Mr. Tippets was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Cowley to Joseph and Clara Lyman Tippets. He attended schools in Cowley before the family moved to Yuba City, Calif., where he graduated from high school. He joined the Navy after high school and was stationed aboard the USS Aulick in the South Pacific. He married Joan Butler April 30, 1951, in Billings. They later divorced. Mr. Lewis worked for Peter Kiewit Construction and retired in 1987 from Decker Coal Co. He enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, hunting and driving around Dayton. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was preceded in death by a son, Wade. Survivors include his longtime companion, LuRee Dowdy; a daughter Sherri Bensfield; two sons, Brett and Bart; a sister, Wanda DeMeyer; two brothers, Wendell and Joseph; and four grandchildren. Elva I. Harris

Elva I. Harris, 87, of Pinedale, died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Jackson. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Pauline Fletchall

Pauline Fletchall, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. At Mrs. Fletchall's request, no services will be held. The family will inurn cremains privately at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Mrs. Fletchall was born Nov. 30, 1921, in Sheridan to Ida (Schreibeis) Walker and Ralph Walker. She married John Slovak. They later divorced. She later married Jim Fletchall. She worked four years in the Sheridan County Courthouse, then as personal secretary for J.P. Croff. She and her husband owned and operated Quality TV, first in downtown Sheridan, then in their home. Mrs. Fletchall enjoyed cooking and fishing in the mountains — especially when she outfished her husband. Survivors include her husband; a son, Jim of Sheridan; a daughter, Cheryle Ehrmantraut of Billings; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren. Olin Rose

Former Sheridan area resident Olin E. Rose, 92, of Mesa, Ariz., died Monday, April 7, 2003, in the Citadel Care Center in Mesa. Graveside memorial services are planned in mid-July at Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Mr. Rose was born Nov. 17, 1910, in Lebanon, Mo. He attended high school in Denver, Fort Morgan and Golden, Colo., and the school of finance at Duke University in Durham, N.C. He lived in Wyoming from 1931-93, when he moved to Arizona, and was an avid musician with his own dance band. He played with John Brug and Fred Bard while in Sheridan. He joined the first Arizona Banjo Band after moving to that state. He was a member more than 50 years of the Masons and served in the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. He married Catherine E. Van Slyke in December 1934. She died in June 1990. Survivors include his second wife, Margaret, of Mesa; a daughter, Norma Ross of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Terry Edgar

Sheridan native Terry Ann Deutsch Edgar of Cody died Thursday, April 24, 2003, after a battle with bone cancer. Cremation is planned, and the ashes will be scattered over Cody Mountain. Survivors include a daughter, Sherri, of Cody; her mother, Laura Michalek, of Cody; and a brother, Michael Michalek, of Denver.

Shirley Evers

Shirley M. Evers, 76, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Revs. David Duprey and Kevin Jones officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Evers was born Dec. 23, 1926, in Cass Lake, Minn., to William and Mabel (Matheson) Logan. She married Dan Evers in 1946 in Big Stone City, S.D. They moved to Casper around 1950 and came to Story in 1958. Mrs. Evers operated the Village Inn restaurant for several years in Story. They moved to Sheridan in 1985. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Beta Sigma Phi and the Story Women's Club. She enjoyed cooking, collecting cookbooks and playing bridge. She was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Vera Tice. Survivors include a daughter, Shannon Conraads of Story; two brothers, Robert Logan of Buffalo and Bill Logan of Story; two sisters, Dona Stine of Laguna Village, Calif., and Betty Miksche of Crofton, Md.; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Florence Olson

Banner native Florence J. Olson, 77, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Life Care Center of Casper. Cremation has taken place under direction of Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper. No services are planned. Ms. Olson was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Banner to Guy A. Olson and Eva K. (Johnson) Olson. She grew up and attended grade school in Banner and was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. She moved to Casper in 1975 and worked for First Interstate Bank until she retired. She enjoyed reading and gardening. She was preceded in death by a sister, Irene (Olson) Wilson. Survivors include three brothers, Alvin and Water, both of Casper, and Roy of Sheridan; and several nieces and nephews. Jackie Brown

Sheridan native Jackie Brown, 70, of Miles City, Mont., died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Miles City after a battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City. Burial will be at a later date in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 21, 1932, in Sheridan to John and Mabel (Macey) Austin. She was a 1950 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Wayne Morford in 1951. She married Bill Brown Jr. in 1978. She lived in Billings from 1993 to May 2002, when she moved to Miles City to live with her son and his family. Survivors include one son, John Morford of Miles City; a daughter, Kathi Ferguson of Billings; a brother, Roger Austin of Cheyenne; and five grandchildren.

Harriet Kretsch

Harriet Kretsch, 84, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Inurnment will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kretsch was born Jan. 16, 1919, in Chicago to George and Mary (Simchen) Long. She married Richard Heyduk in 1938. He died in 1963, and she later married Robert Kretsch. She enjoyed music and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and a son, Donald Heyduk. Survivors include sons Richard Heyduk and Wayne Heyduk, both of Sheridan; daughters Nancy of Fort Collins, Colo., and Linda Medina of Cheyenne; and 20 grandchildren.

Lawrence Miller

Lawrence Everett Miller, 87, of Parkman died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Life Center, 118 W. Fifth St. in Sheridan, with Pastor Kent Bahruth officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Miller was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Dietz to Charlie W. and Olive Mabel (Surena) Miller. The family homesteaded on West Pass Creek when he was 1 year old. He grew up on the family ranch and attended Slack Creek School. He spent his entire life on West Pass Creek, semiretiring approximately 10 years ago. He married Margie Louise Endicott in Sheridan Dec. 19, 1953. He belonged to Sheridan Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include his wife; one son, Everett, of Parkman; five daughters, Marilyn King of Eagle Point, Ore., Karen Spaulding of Sheridan, Nancy Gehm of Rapid City, and Jeannie Crabtree and Peggy Peringer, both of Billings; one sister, Frances Seder, of Billings; and 16 grandchildren.

Bob Smith Jr.

Joseph Robert “Bob” Smith Jr., 63, of Story, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. A celebration of Mr. Smith's life is 1 p.m. Sunday at the Story Women's Club. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Smith was born on June 22, 1939, in Beaumont, Texas, to Joseph and Alice (Mitchell) Smith. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1961 after graduating from high school. He served in the military until 1965, receiving an honorable discharge. He then went to college, earning a bachelor's degree. Mr. Smith married Bettie Newbury in 2000 in Red Lodge, Mont., and the couple moved to Story. An only child, he loved having an extended family with children and grandchildren. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, reading and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Bettie; his children, Stacey Cramer, Elizabeth Essinger, Russell Hicks, Debora Waters, Kathy Hanson, Teresa Hougardy and Melody Kalkwarf; and 11 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made in Mr. Wilson's name to the Sheridan VA Medical Center in care of George Schafer, First National Bank of Buffalo, Box 400, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Josephine Ringley

Sheridan native Josephine Marie Ringley, 78, of Cheney, Wash., died Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Spokane, Wash. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cheney. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday in the church with Father Thomas Caswell as celebrant. Burial will be in Sheridan. Cheney Funeral Home of Cheney is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Ringley was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Sheridan to Joseph and Catherine Gariffa. She was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School and later worked as a bank teller and bookkeeper. She married Howard D. Ringley June 14, 1947. Mr. Ringley was in the U.S. Air Force, and they traveled to various assignments until 1971, when he retired. Mrs. Ringley served as a Red Cross nursing assistant in military hospitals where the couple were stationed. They moved to Cheney in 1972, and Mrs. Ringley worked as a part-time cashier at Eastern Washington University about 20 years. She was a member and past president of St. Rose of Lima Guild, the Beta Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and various bridge groups. She was preceded in death by a son, Howard D. Ringley Jr., six sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her husband; a son, Donald; two daughters, Jean M. Wilkinson and Joyce Anna Colby; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Harvey Kimbrough Jr.

GILLETTE — Harvey Kimbrough Jr., 65, of Newcastle died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Western Manor in Newcastle after a battle with cancer. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at Stevenson Funeral Home in Gillette. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette.

Robert Ratcliff

DAYTON — Former Dayton resident Robert Paris “Sonny” Ratcliff, 73, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in California. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory in Casper. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Mr. Ratcliff was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Dietz to Paris and Opal (Young) Ratcliff. He attended school in Dayton. He grew up on the Conrad Ranch in Dayton and started his own sheep business. He also worked for Kiewit Co. for many years. He owned and operated B&J Trucking until 1982, when he retired. He married Jean Mills of Big Horn in June 1949. They later divorced. He belonged to Teamsters Local 307. He spent summers in the Sheridan area and winters in California. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his son in Sheridan. He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene; a daughter, Linda Ratcliff Anderson; a sister, Elaine Morrison; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, Clay of Sheridan and Richard of Casper; a daughter, Peggy Wert of Casper; three brothers, Leonard of California, Ed of Lakewood, Colo., and Sam of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Lucy Dudley of Rapid City and Betty Reichert of Dayton; his companion, Mae Beard of San Jacinto, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. LODGE GRASS, Mont. — Clarence L. “Mick” Stevens, 67, of Lodge Grass died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Heritage Acres Nursing Home. Reta Irwin

BIG HORN — Reta W. Irwin, 97, of Big Horn died Monday, April 14, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services were this morning in Mount Hope Cemetery, the Rev. Raymond Clark officiating, with arrangements by Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Irwin was born Feb. 12, 1906, in McCook, Neb., to Fred M. and Roselena (Smith) Baker. The family moved to the Sheridan area when she was 6 years old, and she grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She owned and ran the Wilson Dairy on Kruse Creek east of Big Horn for approximately 10 years, until 1945. She married Clifford Irwin in 1946. They lived on Kruse Creek until 1956. Mrs. Irwin was a housekeeper and nanny for the Wallop family in Big Horn and Sheridan until 1982, when she retired. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include one son, Riley Wilson of Harrison, Mont.; a daughter, Madonna Beeson of Big Horn; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Adam Felde

Sheridan native Adam Felde, 61, died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Albany, Ore. Services were in Albany, according to the family. Mr. Felde was born Nov. 4, 1941, to Amelia (Schwab) and Dave Felde Sr. He was a 1959 graduate of Sheridan High School. He served in the Navy and retired from the Rare Metals Plant in Albany. He was preceded in death by his wife, a stepdaughter, three brothers, two half brothers and three half sisters. Survivors include two daughters, a son, a stepdaughter and stepson, all of Albany; three brothers, Dan and Bob, both of Sheridan, and Albert of Albany; a sister, Esther Peirce of Dayton; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert E. King, 53, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Sheridan College Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome with the Rev. David Duprey officiating.
Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. King was born April 4, 1950, in Sheridan to Don and Dorothy King. He grew up on the ranch along Prairie Dog, attended Woodland Park School and was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He participated in 4-H with horses and leather work in grade school and was active in the high school rodeo club, competing in calf roping, bulldogging and team roping. He worked after school in the family business, King’s Saddlery. He continued rodeo activity in the college circuit while attending Sheridan College and took over as head of King’s rope department, serving ropers worldwide. He married Deborah Haynes of Miles City, Mont., in 1975. He enjoyed watching their daughters play basketball and rodeo. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Barry King. Survivors include his wife and parents, all of Sheridan; two daughters, Erin and Kristen; two brothers, Bill of Big Horn and Bruce of Sheridan; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Edwin King, 53, of Sheridan died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cody Allen Warnke, 19, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Sheridan. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sheridan College Golden Dome with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Warnke was born June 24, 1983, in Sheridan to Randy and Tammy (Harper) Warnke. He grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School, where he was a wrestler and avid sports fan. He worked at KWN Construction after high school. He was in the apprentice carpenter program. He enjoyed being with his friends, motorcycles, camping and the Big Horn Mountains. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Earl Harper. Survivors, all of Sheridan, include his father and stepmother, Bessie Warnke; his mother; a brother, Kyle; a sister, Stephanie; grandparents Tom and Alice Warnke and Dorothy Harper; and his great-grandmother Helen Warnke. Carmen Graunke

Carmen Graunke, 71, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Graunke's home after 6 p.m. Thursday to celebrate her life. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Graunke was born July 28, 1931, in Rushville, Neb., to Joe and Hallie (Beguin) Dieriex. She married David Graunke June 12, 1950, in Rushville. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Tom. Survivors include her mother, Hallie Jackson of Rushville; two sons, Steve of Lander and Doug of Soda Springs, Idaho; a sister, Betty of Chadron, Neb.; and two grandchildren. Sheridan native Margaret Edmonds, 84, of North Platte, Neb., died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Premier Estates in North Platte. Private family services will be at a later date. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home of North Platte is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Edmonds was born Jan. 10, 1919, in Sheridan to John and Anna Kryana. She grew up in Sheridan. She moved to Loveland, Colo., and worked for Hewlett Packard, then moved to North Platte in 2000 to be closer to family. She enjoyed fishing and dancing. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Anna Suel; and a brother Jack Kryana. Survivors include a son, John Welsh of Brady, Neb.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a niece.

Philip Gifford

Philip R. Gifford Sr., 79, of Sheridan died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Gifford was born June 30, 1923, in Parkman. He attended Holy Name School and was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. He entered the Navy submarine fleet, serving on the USS Narwhal SS-167 in the South Pacific and the Philippines from 1943 until his discharge in 1946. He married Maxine Bilyeu Dec. 31, 1947. Mr. Gifford worked 13 years for The Sheridan Press as a typesetter and, with his wife and relatives, operated the Arrowhead Lodge Restaurant for a short period. He left The Press to pursue carpentry. He owned and operated a general contracting company until he retired. He built and remodeled many homes and businesses in Sheridan, Buffalo and surrounding areas. He loved to cook, garden, follow the Wyoming Cowboy football and basketball teams, camp, hunt and fish in the Big Horn Mountains, travel and play keno. He lived in the VA Nursing Home the past two years. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Claudia K. Plachek; two brothers, Gene and Charles; and four sisters, Josephine Bohlin, Florence Brandt, Ella Neva and Irene Kehrwald. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; four sons, Philip Jr., Rodney and Edward, all of Sheridan, and Richard of Rock Springs; five granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. Mrs. Barbula was born Aug. 29, 1921, in Poposia to Charles and Mary (Tomori) Gazdik. She married Edward Barbula June 22, 1940, in Monarch. The couple owned Bruno's Nightclub. Mrs. Barbula enjoyed embroidery and dancing and loved spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Louis Gazdik. Survivors include a son, John of Ranchester; a daughter, Shirley Johnson of Sheridan; two sisters, Betty E. Berta of Sheridan and Mary Berta of Georgia; a brother, Charles Gazdik of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Edwin Arnold Lawler, 93, of Meeteetse died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at his residence. He was father of Susan Hixon of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Meeteetse Baptist Church. A reception will be at Lucille's Cafe in Meeteetse after services. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Thermopolis. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon at Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis and 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday in the Meeteetse Baptist Church. Mr. Lawler was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Hebron, Neb., to John C. and Mabel Helfer Lawler. He moved to Meeteetse in the 1930s. He married Valaria Cammock July 21, 1938, in Thermopolis. They moved to Meeteetse in 1948, where they leased and later purchased a gas station. Mr. Arnold moved the Chuckwagon Cafe from Cody to Meeteetse in 1956 and operated it alongside his gas station as Lawler's Service and Cafe. He ranched in the Meeteetse and Sheridan areas from 1969 to 1973. He was a guide for many years. He retired in 1985, and he and Mrs. Lawler moved to Thermopolis. Mrs. Lawler died in 1994, and Mr. Lawler returned to Meeteetse in 1995. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Thermopolis and active with the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed pinochle, the outdoors, wildlife, hunting and horses. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and John, and three sisters, Thelma, Dorothy and Grace. Survivors include five other daughters Reta Collins of Cody, Joyce Neal of Wyola, Mont., Janet Keeler of Monroe, Ore., Sharon Desjarlais of Billings, and Isabel Kershaw of McMinnville, Ore.; two sons, John of Powell and Charles of Meeteetse; three sisters, Laurine Nunn and Deryce Reed, both of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Romona Horner of Crawford, Neb.; a brother, Albert Lawler of Portland, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Former Sheridan area resident William Ely Wilson, 86, of Corvallis, Ore., died Sunday, April 6, 2003. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. BIG HORN — Ida Irene Nussbacher, 84, of Big Horn died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services were this morning at Holy Name Catholic Church with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Big Horn. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Nussbacher was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Kooi to Frank and Mary (Wojtyla) Boyko. She married Paul Nussbacher. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Nussbacher enjoyed dancing, gardening, taking care of the wild animals around her home, cooking, listening to music, socializing with friends, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing cards. She belonged to Big Horn Mountain Polka Club, Big Horn Woman's Club, Big Horn Historical Society, Old Time Musicians and BPO Does. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Engdahl; three sisters, Anna, Mary and Frances; and two brothers, George and John. Survivors include a longtime companion and friend, John Gentry of Big Horn; a daughter, L. Jean Byrtus; two brothers, Frank Boyko of Sheridan and Joe Boyko of Worland; a sister, Lois Etchechoury of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ronald Clayton Andersen Sr., 60, of Sheridan died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in Deaconess Billings Clinic-Hospital. Funeral services were March 31 in the Bridger Community Building in Bridger, S.D. Burial was in Bridger Cemetery under direction of the Luce Funeral Home of Eagle Butte, S.D. Mr. Andersen was born in Fort Yates, N.D., July 30, 1942, to Cordelia (Hold) Andersen and Clifford (Iron Moccasin) Andersen. He was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in Eagle Butte. He attended schools in Rapid City and graduated from high school in Ganado, Ariz. He attended Yankton College in Yankton, S.D. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for more than 40 years with Peter Kiewit, Western Paving, Larry’s Inc., High Country Construction Inc. and Decker Coal Co. He enjoyed being with family and friends and playing pool, dart ball, softball and going camping. He was preceded in death by one son, Ron Jr. Survivors include his wife, Lucinda (Arney) Andersen; three children, Winona Barber and Ferron Andersen, both of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Heather Andersen of Pierre, S.D.; a brother, Melvin Wright of Comfort, Texas; a sister, Tira Andersen of Sheridan; 16 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

DAYTON – Norma Jean Gower Woodsend, 72, of Dayton died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service was Friday. Kane Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mrs. Woodsend was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Shamrock, Okla., to Andrew and Millie (Deel) Gower. After high school she married Charles Woodsend March 13, 1962, in Pierre, S.D. She was a homemaker most of her life. She loved painting and being with her family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Jean; an infant daughter, Mary Ann; an infant son, Charles Jr.; and two brothers. Glen Nicholson, 74, of Sheridan died Monday, March 31, 2003, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. A celebration of life is 2 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home for family and friends. Mr. Nicholson was born Feb. 5, 1929, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, to Archie and Katherine May (MacDearmind) Nicholson. He grew up on a farm homestead owned by his father in Moffit, N.D., and attended a country school in Moffit and high school in Bismarck, N.D. He joined the Army at 17 and served from 1946 to 1947. He married Geraldine Lund in 1963 in Sundance. Mr. Nicholson was a painting contractor in Sheridan for many years. He enjoyed antique cars, loved to work in the yard and enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog, “Bugsy.” He also enjoyed trying his luck with the lottery and playing practical jokes. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a son, Scott of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters, Susan Amsden of Chandler, Ariz., and Dixie Egan of Sheridan; two stepdaughters, Pat Wilson of Sheridan and Marcia Wickman of Pahrump, Nev.; three stepsons, Bob Reinholt of Denver and Kenneth and Steve Reinholt, both of Sheridan; 22 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Sheridan native Gary Wayne Gossett, 64, of Buffalo died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his residence after a long illness. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Dick Edgerton officiating. Anchor Lodge 7 AF and AM will present a Masonic Funeral Service. A private family burial will follow. Mr. Gossett was born Nov. 10, 1938, in Sheridan to Harold and Lorna Gossett. He was a 1958 graduate of Sheridan High School. He joined the National Guard after graduation and served eight years as a company cook. He married Joan Harrison Sept. 7, 1958, in Sheridan, and they made their home here while he worked construction. He worked several years for Coca Cola and later for Pepsi Cola. The family moved to Buffalo in 1971, and Mr. Gossett managed the Bison Theater until it closed in 1984. They returned to Sheridan and he managed the Centennial Theaters for one year. They returned to Buffalo, and he went into partnership with the Top Choice Meat Plant. He worked for Jenks Trucking from 1985-87 then worked for Lamb Construction. He also worked for Malapi Mining, the Crossroads Inn and Buffalo Lumber from 1993 until 2001 when ill health forced him to retire. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, a member and past master of Anchor Lodge 7 AF and AM, a past master of the York Rite and a member of the Kalif Temple and Scottish Rite. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne, and a sister, Arlene Lopes. Survivors include his wife, of Buffalo; two daughters, Gayle Gill of Buffalo and Janice Sanders of Carpenter; two brothers, Virgil of Sacramento, Calif., and Tom of Laramie; two sisters, Nora Horton of Superior, Mont., and Nita Pixley of Sacramento; and three grandchildren. She worked as a caregiver in elder care and volunteered at the Big Horn Mountain Eagles Lodge 4169 calling Bingo. She loved her cat, Gizmo, and enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. John Partington

John B. “Johnny” Partington, 79, of Sheridan died Friday, March 28, 2003, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Graveside services will military honors were 10 a.m. today in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Partington was born Nov. 12, 1923, in Provo, Utah, to Margaret and Paul Partington. His parents died, and he and his sister went to live and attend school at the Presbyterian orphanage in Laramie. Mr. Partington entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was discharged in 1944 and returned to Wyoming. He enjoyed working with leather in occupational therapy at the VA.

F.L. Hamilton

F.L. “Hamie” Hamilton, 84, of Greybull died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Littleton, Colo., after a long illness. He was father of Patrick Hamilton of Sheridan. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Basin with Father Ron Lytle officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Greybull. Visitation is 2-7 p.m. today in the Atwood Family Chapel in Greybull. Mr. Hamilton was born June 30, 1918, in Davis City, Iowa, to Ernest Melvin and Sarah Ellen (Henderson) Hamilton. The family moved to Greybull when he was a small boy, and he was a graduate of Greybull High School. He married Patricia Elizabeth Coll May 29, 1941, in Evanston. He served with the U.S. Marines during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a conductor on the railroad, working for Burlington Northern 30 years before he retired. He owned and operated Hamilton Outfitters with his son, Patrick, for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and spending time at his cabin with family and friends. He served on the Greybull Fire Department for many years, including two terms as chief. He was a town councilman and served two terms as Greybull's mayor. He was a long-time member and past officer of the VFW Leonard C. Purkey Post 3305 and a long-time member of the Shriner's Mason Lodge 34 AF&AM and Elks Lodge 1431, all in Greybull. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 21, 2001. Other survivors include two other children, Diane Hamilton of Littleton, Colo., and Darlene Hopkin of Goldonna, La.; a brother, Kenneth Lavere Hamilton of La Verkin, Utah; two sisters, Verla Kershner of Greybull and Verna Lou Brown of Grand Junction, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial fund to benefit VFW improvements at the Hillside Cemetery has been established at the Bank of Greybull, 601 Greybull Ave., Greybull, WY 82426.

Betty Mae Shipman, 78, of Sheridan died Monday, March 31, 2003, after a long illness. A celebration of her life will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Sheridan's Elks Lodge 520 at 45 W. Brundage Street. Arrangements are with the family. Mrs. Shipman was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Spokane, Wash., to Matt and Viola (Bingham) Michels. She married Chester Harold Stroup Feb. 29, 1941, in Hardin, Mont. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1944 and worked for Mountain Bell Telephone for 25 years before retiring to pursue travel and leisure activities with Mr. Stroup. He died July 7, 1983. Mrs. Shipman married Gordon Shipman Nov. 15, 1990. She was a member of Eagles Aerie 186 Auxiliary, Elks Lodge 520 Does, the Sheridan Doll Club, Bead Club, the class of 1944 and Mountain Bell Telephone Ladies Group. She played pan Ginny (a card game) every Tuesday with special friends. Armed Forces during the Korean War. The family moved to California following his honorable discharge. Mr. Mires worked in the metallurgical industry until fall 2002 when he retired and he and Mrs. Mires moved to Sheridan to be closer to family. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching wildlife and seeing the countryside from the back roads. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; five children, George of Haymarket, Va., Teresa Flammer of Van Nuys, Calif., Michael of North Hollywood, Calif., Steven of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Barbara Eaton of Sheridan; and four grandsons.

Ralph Carpenter

Ralph Donald Carpenter, 96, of Seattle died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Seattle's Swedish Hospital after suffering a fall in his home. Recitation of the Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Funeral Home Chapel in Seattle. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in Assumption Catholic Church in Seattle. Mr. Carpenter was born May 17, 1906, in Belle Fourche, S.D. The family later moved to Sheridan, and Mr. Carpenter attended schools here. He went to work as a grocery clerk at age 9 and drove a delivery truck starting at age 10. He worked at that occupation to help support his mother and sisters until he was 22. He married Bessie Norman in 1928, and they moved to Seattle then. He worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. in Seattle and Spokane, Wash., until 1966 when he retired. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Sandpoint Golf and Country Club and the Elks. He was preceded in death by Bessie Norman in 1979; a second wife, Marie, in 1991; a son, Donald; and two sisters. Survivors include one son, Duane of Mukilteo, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Glen Nicholson

Glen E. Nicholson, 74, of Sheridan died Monday, March 31, 2003, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

John B. Partington

John B. Partington, 79, of Sheridan died Friday, March 28, 2003, at the VA Medical Center. Graveside services with military honors are Wednesday at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
