A celebration of the life of Myrtle Peterson, 94, of Sheridan will be 7:30 tonight at the Country Kitchen Restaurant. Burial of her cremains will be at a later date in Ackley, Iowa. Mrs. Peterson died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Westview Health Care Center. She was born in Burt, Iowa, to Julia (Yost) and Charles Ama. She graduated from high school, earned a teaching degree and spent 20 years teaching in rural schools. She married Woodrow Peterson in Bethany, Mo. She helped him operate a local filling station and was a teller at Ackley (Iowa) State Bank for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and adopted children.

Funeral services with military honors for former Sheridan resident James D. Lindsey, 76, of Buffalo will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Buffalo with Mike Garneau officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Trails State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Lindsey died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Gillette to Benjamin and Laura (Kincaid) Lindsey. He enlisted in the Army in May 1951, fought in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in June 1953. He was a ranch hand for the PK Ranch for many years. He lived in Sheridan County for 20 years. He enjoyed reading, watching people, fishing and going on outings with friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Archie, Duane and Kenneth; and a sister, Betty. Survivors include five nieces and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services for Laila Eleanor Pixley, 69, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, S.D. Burial will be in Whitewood Cemetery. The family will be at Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan from 10 a.m. until noon Friday to greet friends for viewing and visitation. Additional viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Kincade Funeral Home in Sturgis, S.D. Mrs. Pixley died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born to Oscar and Selma Balo in rural South Dakota near St. Onge in a Finnish-speaking community. She learned English in elementary school. She grew up in rural South Dakota and attended Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D. She married Hugh Pixley on Dec. 7, 1952. She owned and operated restaurants in South Dakota, Wyoming and Washington and owned and operated tourist resorts in South Dakota. The family also had a business transporting train crews for Burlington Northern, owned a potato chip factory in Belle Fourche, S.D., and owned a taxi cab business in Sheridan. Mrs. Pixley enjoyed fishing, painting and cooking. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Monte Evans. Survivors include five sons, Milo Evans of Penrose, Colo., Merle Evans of Warrenton, Va., Mike Pixley of Upton and Marty and Mark Pixley of Sheridan; a brother, Guy Balo of Whitewood; five sisters, Edna Baker of Belle Fourche, Hilma Saari of Basin, Etta Gaylord of Portland, Ore., Hazel Kessler of Sheridan, and Wilma Reynolds of Shreveport, La.; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Former Dayton resident Ken R. K.R. Warren, 57, of Billings died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings. Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today in Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Rosary will be 6 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Turner, Mont. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas. Cremation will follow. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Turner Cemetery. Mr. Warren was born Nov. 11, 1948, in Havre, Mont., to Thaine and Elinor (Fairbank) Warren. He graduated from high school in Turner and attended Eastern Montana College in Billings. He married Shirley Carlat in 1977. They moved to Phoenix, where Mr. Warren was a land-law examiner for the Bureau of Land Management. He was one of 10 recipients of the Presidential Award as an outstanding federal employee in 1985. He retired from the BLM in 1990. The family moved to Dayton in 1996. He and Mrs. Warren were later divorced. Mr. Warren returned to Billings in 2000. He was a member of the Classic Car Club and an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include a son, Eric of Dayton; four brothers Tom and Scott of Turner, C.J. of Belgrade, Mont., and John of Kimball, S.D.; two sisters, Helen of Bozeman, Mont., and Arlene Lininger of Belgrade; and two granddaughters. Mr. Mathis died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. He was born March 3, 1939, to Harry M. and Ruth Mathis in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 24 years until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed reading, collecting rocks and hats and spending time in the Big Horn Mountains. Survivors include a brother, George, one niece, one nephew and one great-nephew, all of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial for Ranchester native Helen Martha Clark, 90, of Buffalo, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. George Von Kaenel as celebrant. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in the church. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside committal services following the Mass. Mrs. Clark died Monday, April 24, 2006, in Buffalo. She was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Ranchester to Joseph and Kate Washut. She started school in Ranchester and later moved with her family to Buffalo, where she attended high school. After high school, she worked in Sheridan at Boyd's Super Market and for Safeway. She moved to Buffalo in 1948 and worked for Pioneer Lumber as a bookkeeper. She attended night school at Hyman Business College in Sheridan, receiving a two-year degree as a bookkeeper. She married Ray Clark on Jan. 20, 1950, in Buffalo. She was a social worker with the Department of Family Services for 27 years until she retired in 1981. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to a bridge club and was an avid player. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband; a son, Ray Jr. of Buffalo; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Acme native Catherine Ann Brantz, 74, of Cheyenne will be 2 p.m. Friday in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sheridan with the Rev. Richard Heine officiating. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be at the Fiedor Ranch in Ranchester following services. Mrs. Brantz died Saturday, April 22, 2006, in LifeCare Center in Cheyenne. She was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Acme to Agnes and Edward Fiedor. She was a 1949 graduate of Ranchester High School. She married Edward Brant on July 30, 1950, in Hardin, Mont. She worked with her husband in several business ventures including Bondi Bros. Grocery and the OK Corral in Sheridan. She also worked as a nurse's aide at Sheridan VA Medical Center. She enjoyed her grandchildren, flowers, birds, wildlife and dancing. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Sheridan Women of the Moose. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, John and Karl Fiedor; and two grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters, Cheryl Broyer and Gloria Brantz, both of Cheyenne, Carol Henson of Mesa, Ariz., and Diane Ford of Gillette; three sons, Ed of Rapid City, Tom of Gillette and Don of Cheyenne; six brothers, Tom Fiedor of Casper, Joe, Robert and Pete Fiedor, all of Sheridan, Ed Fiedor of Laramie and Jack Fiedor of Ranchester; three sisters, Theresa Mock of Mesa, Joan Mlinar of O'Neal, Neb., and Marie Parkinson of Gillette; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Christian Wake Service for Dr. Charles Stanley Pfister, 89, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Neal Pfister, son of the deceased, and the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Dr. Pfister died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his residence. He was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Sheridan and grew up on a ranch in the Pumpkin Buttes area of Campbell County. He was a 1941 graduate of Creighton University College of Dentistry. He enlisted in the Army Dental Corps on Aug. 10, 1942, and served in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of captain Jan. 22, 1946. He practiced dentistry in Sheridan until August 1978, when he retired. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church for more than 64 years. He was preceded in death by a son, John Charles. Survivors include his wife, Cleo; three other sons, William, Michael and Kevin; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Kenneth Casteel, 96, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Forman officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Casteel died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born June 14, 1909, in Zwingle, Iowa, to Clyde and Hannah (Denlinger) Casteel. He married Bernice Clemen on April 21, 1932, in Galena, Ill. He was a truck driver all his life. He began work at Armour Packing Co. in 1930 and later worked for County Trucking and Prucka. He retired from Interstate Systems in 1973 and moved to Sheridan with his family for the mountains and hunting. He enjoyed raising cows, which were his pets. He worked part time for the Garbers in Big Horn until the late 1980s, when he began caring for Mrs. Casteel full time. She preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Duane of Sheridan; a sister, Marie Carranza of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. BUFFALO Donald John Bettinger, 80, of Buffalo died Friday, April 21, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Leonard DeWayne Harris, 24, of Gillette, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Harris died Saturday, April 15, 2006, in Wyoming Medical Center in Casper as a result of a motorcycle accident near Gillette. He was born Sept. 17, 1981, in Galveston, Texas, to Kim and Steve Harris. The family moved to Sheridan, where he grew up and attended school. He played high school football and baseball and participated in the Sheridan County Rodeo. He was employed by RCR Well Service in Gillette. He was engaged to Emily Simpson of Gillette. Survivors include a daughter, Fallon Len Harris; his mother, Kim Townsend of Gillette; his father and stepmother, Steve and Judy Harris of Onsted, Mich.; his stepfather and stepmother Don and Barb Townsend of Sheridan; four brothers Don R., Greg and Brad Townsend and James Conant; four sisters, Venessa Paredez, Brandy Jo Roterius, Erica Swartz and Megan Harris; and grandparents Bobbie and Leonard Harris. Bernice Sissy Slater, 77, of Tampa, Fla., died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at University Community Hospital in Tampa. She was mother of Ronald Slater of Sheridan. Funeral services are today at Carrollwood Chapel, Blount & Curry Funeral Home in Tampa. Burial is in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Mrs. Slater was the daughter of the late Samuel and Lillian Sidle of Miami Beach, Fla. She lived in Miami for nearly 70 years before moving to Tampa to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Merle of Miami. Survivors include her husband, Sumner; another son, Michael of Tampa; a sister, Florence Jacobson of Miami; and two granddaughters.
Patricia `Patsy' G. Jones, 77, of Twisp, Wash., died Saturday, April 15, 2006, in Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee of complications from pneumonia. She was mother of Julia Stellingwerf of Sheridan. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Genevieve's Catholic Church in Twisp. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at Precht's Methow Valley Chapel, followed by funeral services at the chapel at 2 p.m. Concluding services and burial will be at Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop, Wash., followed by a potluck at the Twist Senior Citizens Center. Arrangements are with Precht-Harrison-Nearants Funeral Service Directors. Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 13, 1928, in Othello, Wash., to George Red and Jennie Ellsworth. She moved to the Methow Valley with her family in 1929. She was a 1947 graduate of Twisp High School. She married Robert G. Jones on Sept. 19, 1956, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He died Sept. 12, 1976. She worked at several jobs, including cook for the Branding Iron Restaurant in Methow Valley for several years. She enjoyed traveling to the Black Hills of South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and the Washington coast to visit family members. She was a member of Twisp Senior Citizens and Methow Eagles Auxiliary. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Virgil and Donald Ellsworth; two sisters, Josephine Danielson and Francis Marcell; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, Patrick of Stanwood, Wash., and Dennis of Twisp; a second daughter, Jennifer Konrad of Twisp; a sister, Marge Nilles of Twisp; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Visitation for Raymond E. Marty, 86, of Sheridan will be 6-8 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Marty died Sunday, April 16, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1920, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Henry Edmond and Nella Beatrice (Arnold) Marty. He grew up on the family ranch near Edgemont, S.D., and attended schools in Edgemont. He was a 1940 graduate of Edgemont High School. He joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1939. His National Guard unit, as part of the 34th Infantry Division, was activated in January 1941 and deployed to England in January 1942. He joined Darby's 1st Rangers in spring 1942 and was later assigned as a sergeant in the cadre for the 3rd and 4th Ranger Battalions serving in North Africa, Sicily and Salerno, Italy. He received the Bronze Star, Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense, American Campaign, Europe-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with Arrowhead and four campaign stars, the World War II Victory and Army Occupation medals, the Presidential Citation with oak leaf and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was transferred to Fort Ord, Calif., in April 1944, where he trained recruits. He married Marjorie Graham on Nov. 18, 1944, in Edgemont. They moved to Sheridan in 1945. They lived in Casper from 1946-48, when Mr. Marty trained as a mechanic. They returned to Sheridan, and he worked for various automobile dealers until 1975, when he and his brother-in-law, Hank Sullivan, started Coffeen Auto Service. Mr. Marty retired in 1994. He was a life member of American Legion Post 7, National Rifle Association, Ranger Brothers of World War II, Disabled American Veterans and the 75th Ranger Regiment Association. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, dancing and being with his family. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry of Divide, Colo., and Roger of Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, Gayle Wells of Sheridan and Susan Zastrow of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Ed of Hot Springs, S.D.; a sister, Mary Rickard of Hot Springs; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Ron Stolcis officiating. The family has requested casual attire. Mr. Bocek died Friday, April 14, 2006, at Sheridan Manor. He was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Monarch to John and Anna Bocek. He grew up on his family's farm. He married Stella Zowada on May 15, 1938, in St. Thomas Catholic Church in Monarch. They bought the family farm in 1952. He maintained the farm while working for Big Horn Coal Co. as a miner. He retired from the coal company in 1979 after 42 years. He enjoyed being with his family and friends. He raised a garden, shared produce, and enjoyed dancing, playing cards and feeding wild turkeys. He was a member of St. Edmund's Catholic Church, United Mine Workers of America Local 2055, and a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, John and Mike; and an infant sister, Mary. Survivors include his wife of Ranchester; two sons, Gary of Ferndale, Wash., and Anton of Ranchester; a daughter, Joan Tellez of Sheridan; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Virginia Kay Austin, 62, of Kaycee died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at her residence. She was sister of Merle Koch of Ranchester. A celebration of her life has been held by her family. The family moved around the state while she was growing up. She graduated from Kaycee High School in 1962. After high school, she attended nursing school in Casper for one year. She married Jack H. Austin on April 21, 1964, in Kaycee. They made their home in Kaycee. She was a retired employee of the Ron and Judy Christensen Ranch east of Kaycee. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and quilting. She was a member of the pinochle marathon in Kaycee. Survivors include five daughters, Melinda Lee Austin, Shelia Schirmer and Michelle Austin, all of Kaycee; Connie Dallman of Cody and Jacqueline Austin of Billings; a brother, Charles Spratt of Aurora, Colo.; another sister, Lou Jones of Kaycee; and 12 grandchildren. Cemetery. Mr. Knickrehm died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at Westview Health Care Center after a brief illness. He was born April 30, 1915, in Grand Island to John and Emma (Stoppkottee) Knickrehm. He graduated from Grand Island High School and worked in the family grocery business before attending the University of Nebraska. He graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was a member of the 1941 Rose Bowl football team. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in the European Theater during World War II. He attained the rank of major. He returned to Grand Island after the war and went into the insurance business with Cady and Knickrehm and later with The Grand Island Trust Co. He married Theola Ellen Leahy on Jan. 17, 1950, in Grand Island. He was past president of Grand Island Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Riverside Golf Club, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Elks Lodge. He and Mrs. Knickrehm moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 1988, where he belonged to East Mesa Rotary Club. The couple moved to Sheridan in 2001 to be near their daughter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Krogh. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a daughter, Mary Kay Love of Sheridan; and a sister, Dr. Marie Knickrehm of Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Reed died Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Boise. She was born April 1, 1922, in Helena, Mont., to Robert and Alma Abel. She married Albert Everett Reed on Jan. 22, 1944, at the home of her parents. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and was active in Bible study and prayer circles. She played piano for her church. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sheila; two sons, Albert Everette Reed Jr. and Robert; a brother, Robert Abel; a sister, Christina Baker; and a granddaughter. She enjoyed riding and hunting rabbits. She attended school in Birney, the Kent Country Day School in Denver and Big Horn School and was a 1959 graduate of Sheridan High School. She attended New Haven College in Jackson, Miss., and the University of Arizona-Tucson. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing bridge. She was an avid sports fan and supported her children in their sports endeavors. Survivors include four children, Christina Murphy, Bruce Garber, Susie Ponce and Rich Garber; three sisters, Kathy Hosford, Carol Vandeventer and Pam David; a brother, Dick Hosford; and four grandchildren. David Joseph Watt, 62, of Buffalo died Friday, March 31, 2006, in Billings. He was brother of Regina Leath of Banner. Memorials services were April 4 in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Marty Rostad officiating. Mr. Watt was born April 7, 1943, to Donald J. and Annette (Richter) Watt. He was a 1961 graduate of Johnson County High School and a 1965 graduate of the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in agriculture. He was the fourth-generation owner/operator of the Watt ranch on Clear Creek east of Buffalo. He married Virginia Krezelok on Aug. 25, 1963, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sheridan. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed elk hunting and spending time at the family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. In addition to his sister, survivors include his wife; his mother of Buffalo; a son, Tony of Kathmandu, Nepal; a daughter, Michelle Burke of Buffalo; and three grandchildren. Sheridan native Tonia Christine Burnette, 65, of Riverton died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at her residence. A celebration of her life was Monday in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center at Central Wyoming College in Riverton with the Rev. Inga Oyan Longbrake officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Burnette was born Dec. 13, 1940, in Sheridan to Joseph F. and Peggy George Rulli. She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Wyoming in 1963. She was UW homecoming queen in 1961. She married Garry Burnette on June 13, 1964, in Sheridan. They lived in Indiana, Virginia, Michigan, Utah and Maryland and 10 years in Toronto, while Mr. Burnette pursued his work as a management consultant. Mrs. Burnette was a high school English teacher in Oregon and Maryland. The family moved to Riverton in 1973. Mrs. Burnette was employed by Central Wyoming College from 1979-2000, including as activities director and, for the last 18 years until she retired, as director of the Robert A. Peck Arts Center. She also was student senate sponsor and adviser. She retired in 2001. She spearheaded a mid-1970s drive to preserve the historic Chicago and North Western railroad depot in Riverton. The work became Riverton's official U.S. Bicentennial project. Mrs. Burnette helped establish Arts in Action, which sponsors community arts projects and performances, and initiated the annual Arts in Action Pierrot Awards honoring Fremont County artists. She also was a founder of the Wind River Arts Foundation and Hot Notes/Cool Nites, a summer band concert series in Riverton and Lander. She received the 1982 Governor's Arts Award in recognition of her service to the arts and served on the Wyoming Arts Council from 1988-94. She served two terms on the Riverton school board, was District 25 School Board chairwoman twice, and was the Wyoming Association of School Administrators' 2004 Wyoming School Board Member of the Year. She was a member of the Riverton Kiwanis and the Riverton Downtown Beautification Committee. She received the Riverton Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Service Award in 2005 for community service, leadership and citizenship. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Rulli. Survivors include her husband; a son, Todd of Park City, Utah; a daughter, Shelby Rodriguez of Denver; a brother, Dan Rulli of Arizona; and four grandchildren. Rodney R. St. Clair, 77, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. St. Clair was born Aug. 16, 1928, to Edwin and Jesse (Mills) St. Clair in Gebo. He was a 1948 graduate of Hot Springs High School. He joined the Marine Corps after graduation and was stationed in China. After his discharge, he went to Thermopolis, where he worked on the Boysen Reservoir dam. He was called back into service during the Korean War. He moved to Norwalk, Calif., after his second discharge. He married Betty Jo Johnson on May 24, 1952. Mr. St. Clair worked for Telford McCallum Steel in Norwalk for about four years. The family moved to Billings in 1956, and Mr. St. Clair worked as a structural engineer for Mountain States Steel until 1971, when the family moved to Jackson. They bought and managed United Campground of Jackson Hole until 1976, when they sold it and began traveling. The St. Clairs spent a month in the Philippines, then returned to the United States and spent summers in Mesa, Ariz., and winters working for the National Park Service in Grand Teton National Park. They returned to Thermopolis in 1993. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kim of Sheridan and Robin Dittrich of Beaverton, Ore.; a son, Rodney Ron; and four grandchildren.
Dayton native George Arthur Dickson, 88, of Riverton died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at his residence. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Davis Funeral Home of Riverton with the Rev. Bill Carlson, pastor of United Methodist Church, officiating. The celebration will be followed by military honors at the funeral home, conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars. A dinner at the VFW Hall in Riverton will follow. Mr. Dickson was born Jan. 15, 1918, in Dayton to Bly and Ruby Dickson. He grew up in the Big Horn Mountains and Sheridan. He attended school in Sheridan and graduated from high school in 1936. He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins for three years before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. He served in the South Pacific, primarily New Guinea, for 31 months as a radio operator. He returned to the United States in 1944 and married Dixie Van Alstyne on Dec. 25, 1945, in Dayton. They moved to Fort Collins, where Mr. Dickson returned to CSU and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in range management in 1950. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Buffalo until he was recalled into military service for the Korean War in 1950. He served one year in the Army infantry, stationed mainly at Fort Carson, Colo. After discharge, he returned to Buffalo until 1952, when he was transferred to Hulett for 11 1/2 years. He was transferred to Riverton in 1963. He retired in 1973. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows. He held offices in the VFW and Legion. He enjoyed fly-fishing, stamp collecting and hunting. He was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Lofgren. Survivors include his wife, Dixie; a son, Jim of Kehei, Maui, Hawaii; a daughter, Gina Decker of Newberry, S.C.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident William Ludell Bill Slates, 78, of Buffalo died Saturday, April 1, 2006, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Alan Schaberg officiating. Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Tuesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mr. Slates was born March 2, 1928, in Gillette to Clyde and Ethel Slates. He grew up and attended school in Gillette. He worked on Campbell County ranches until 1946, when he joined the Army. After service, he returned to Gillette and worked on construction for several years. He married Frances Haskin on March 17, 1954, in Gillette. They moved to Sheridan in 1961, and Mr. Slates owned and operated the Last Frontier Service Station. He later worked for Sheridan County. He and Mrs. Slates moved to Buffalo in 1992 after he retired. He attended New Assembly of God Church, was a past member of Jeans and Queens Square Dance Club of Sheridan, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, the mountains, and dancing. He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, a grandson and a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Andrea Slates of Sheridan; and one granddaughter.
