Former Sheridan resident Mary Jane Melton, 80, of Casper died April 26, 2007, in Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper of cancer. A celebration of her life was held by her children, and burial will be in Sheridan next to her husband. Arrangements are with Bustard Funeral Home of Casper. She was born March 14, 1927, in Sidney, Mont., to Bert and Bertha (Thornton) LeSueur. She grew up on the family's farm and attended schools in Sidney. After graduating from high school, she attended college in Billings. She married James Russell Melton on Jan. 7, 1949. She worked as a bookkeeper, taxi driver, waitress, seamstress, machine operator and caregiver. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking and being with her children. In addition to Sheridan and Casper, she had lived in Billings, Forsyth and Glendive, Mont.; Gillette; Alliance and Bridgeport, Neb.; and Boyd and Decatur, Texas. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jack, and a granddaughter. Survivors include three sons, William, James and Gary; a daughter, Deborah Goudie; two sisters, Esther and Elsie; a brother, Herbert; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robert Lee Schmidgall, 64, of Story died April 27, 2007, in Billings Clinic. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mackinaw Township (Ill.) Cemetery. Arrangements are with Haensel Funeral Home of Mackinaw. Mr. Schmidgall was born March 28, 1943, in Mackinaw to William and Cleona Ackerly Schmidgall. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Indiana University and was a chemistry professor at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., for 31 years. He retired in 2001. He married Judy Robins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don, and a sister, Betty. Survivors include his wife. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
Kenneth R. Pederson, 67, of Sheridan died April 27, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherm Weberg officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
Memorial services for Rita Deur, 92, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Peter James Mwaura officiating. Burial of cremains will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Deur died April 26, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Philadelphia to Thomas and Vera Arnold. She married Joseph Deur on Jan. 8, 1938. They lived in New York, Florida and Arizona as well as Wyoming. Mr. Deur preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Edith Sherman. Graveside memorial services for Harley F. "Shorty" Smith, 91, of Story will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with officers of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died April 25, 2007, in Johnson County Healthcare Center. He was born April 19, 1916, in Story to Barney C. and Frances (Leitner) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Story and worked on his father's ranch. He was a bartender at Kelley's Bar in Story before joining the Army at the start of World War II. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands at Dutch Harbor and in Europe. He joined the civil service after the war, working at the North Island Naval Station at San Diego for 28 years, until he retired in 1973. He returned to Story and tended bar at the Wagon Box. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, a past member of Eagles Lodge 186 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards at the Elks Lodge and dancing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1989; a daughter; eight brothers; and one sister. Survivors include a stepson, Mike Matto of Buffalo; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Potts of Buffalo; and numerous step-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Elks Cemetery Fund, 45 W. Memorial services for Erman Ernest Hladky, 104, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday in Mount Pisgah Cemetery Chapel in Gillette with the Rev. Martin Crump officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan. Mr. Hladkey died April 23, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born Sept. 4, 1902, in Delia, Kan., to Edward E. and Albina Macha Hladkey. He attended rural schools in Kansas. He worked on the family farm until he was 19, when he boarded a freight train and rode to Wyoming. He worked for ranchers in the Moorcroft area and spent a season hauling sugar beets in Hardin, Mont. He returned to Kansas one year for winter work before returning to Wyoming. He married Lulu Marie Gibson on June 9, 1927, in Hardin. The family owned a farm north of Gillette until 1981, when Mr. Hladky retired and moved to Sheridan. He worked as a carpenter and construction worker. He enjoyed ranch work, attending farm sales, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He lived in his own home with the help of neighbors Walline and Marvin Johnson until two months before his 104th birthday, when he moved to Sheridan Manor. He was honored as Sheridan County's oldest citizen on his 103rd birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter, Audrey; a son, Clifford; nine brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Spike of Gillette and Bob of Lusk; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Tony M. Knezovich, 81, of Rock Springs died April 22, 2007, at his residence after a long illness. He was father of Steven L. Knezovich of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at Saint Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Beavers as celebrant. Parish rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. today at the church. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. today and one hour before service time Friday at the church. Military graveside rites will be Friday in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens north of Rock Springs. Mr. Knezovich was born June 9, 1925, in Rock Springs to Marco and Francis Tomlanovich Knezovich. He attended school in Superior and was a 1943 graduate of Superior High School. He married Olga S. Franklin on June 30, 1951, in Rock Springs. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. He was a plant operator for D & D Converters at the Quealy Coke Plant for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Community and the PAD Poker Room. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, horseshoes, playing cards and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion and Pete; and three sisters, Josephine Morris, Mary Nosich and Ann Knezovich. Survivors include his wife; three other sons, Anthony M., Gregory A. and Paul D., all of Rock Springs; a daughter, Linda S. Jones of Rock Springs; two sisters, Hellen Mattinson of Rock Springs and Anne Moyer of Leadville, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Ronald Vogt, 60, of Sheridan died April 23, 2007, at his residence. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Vogt was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Russell, Kan., to Allan and Loretta (Gaskill) Vogt. He graduated from Central High School in Aurora, Colo. He married Gwen Moore on Feb. 10, 1988, in Manzanillo, Mexico. He was employed at Abbey Carpet. He enjoyed hunting, working on cars, fishing and the company of his Labrador retrievers, Raven and Tia. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shalimar Jarrell of Denver; two sons, Corbin and Talbot, both of Denver; a sister, Debra Bullard of Lakewood, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial services for Harold E. "Red" Harnish Sr., 93, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethesda Worship Center with Pastor Scott Lee officiating. Arrange-ments are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Harnish died April 20, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Speer to George and Addie (Baker) Harnish. He married Ruth W. Mitchell on Jan. 26, 1938, in Clearmont. They later lived in Queen Valley, Ariz., before moving to Sheridan in 1997. Mrs. Harnish died April 1, 2002. Mr. Harnish was a rancher and farmer and retired in 1977 as an assistant manager for Safeway. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and sightseeing. He also was an avid bowler and took up golf after retirement. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and George. Survivors include four sons, Harold E. Jr., Bernard, Kerry and Bill; a sister, Louella Worthington; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. BUFFALO Michael J. Gandy, 49, of Anaheim, Calif., died April 18, 2007, from injuries he received from a falling tree. He was the son of Jean Gandy of Buffalo. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Hugo Blotsky officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services for Charles S. "Charley" Hamilton, 85, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors by Sheridan American Legion Post 7 and the Wyoming Army National Guard. Mr. Hamilton died April 18, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Sheridan to Charles W. and Gladys (Holcomb) Hamilton. He grew up on the family ranch on Spring Creek north of Decker, Mont., and on Rapid Creek southwest of Sheridan. He attended Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he ranched and raised registered Morgan horses on the family ranch in Parkman. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service, cut posts and poles in the Big Horn Mountains, was a fence contractor and worked for Big Horn Coal. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 and a member of the American Morgan Horse Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsye (Wallace) Hamilton, in 1992. He remarried. He was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Charles, and two brothers, Robert and Kent Harry. Survivors include his wife, Frances; a son, Kelly J. of Cheyenne; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services for Patricia Ann "Patty" Ware, 81, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Ware died April 16, 2007, at her residence. She was born July 22, 1925, in Hastings, Neb., to John A. and Edith M. (Stonehocker) Mohan. She moved as a young child with her family to Gillette, where they operated a dairy and her father worked in a coal mine. A 1943 graduate of Campbell County High School, she played cornet in the high school band. She married Keith F. Ware on June 20, 1946, in Sheridan. They worked a ranch near Gillette for a few years, then moved to Sheridan when Mr. Ware took a job at the VA Medical Center. Mrs. Ware was a member of the Big Horn Woman's Club and Sheridan County Cowbelles (now CattleWomen). She helped organize the Hidden Hills Landowners Association, serving as its secretary for several years. She was instrumental in drafting and filing the Hidden Hills Subdivision covenants, according to her family. She also worked as a guide at Bradford Brinton Memorial in Big Horn for several years and was secretary at Carroll Realty in the 1960s and '70s. She was an avid Denver Broncos fan and enjoyed reading and being with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dona M. Mohan, and two daughters, Kathy Ware and Linda Slack of Sheridan. Survivors include her husband; a son, John F. of Biddle, Mont.; a daughter, Pamela See of Sheridan; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Sheridan County native Walter William Dude Zowada, 85, of Buffalo died April 14, 2007, in Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. George Tellez officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Wednesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel. Private family graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Mr. Zowada was born Nov. 24, 1921, in the former Sheridan County mining community of Kooi to Michael and Anna Zowada. The family moved to Monarch, where Mr. Zowada attended elementary school. After graduating from Sheridan High School, he drove farm trucks and worked in the coal mine until 1943, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Germany during World War II. He was captured at the Mozel Bridge and interned in a German prisoner of war camp for two years. He returned to Monarch after the war. He married Nadene Case on Nov. 17, 1946, in Sheridan. They lived in Monarch while Mr. Zowada worked in the coal mine. He later took a job with the Wyoming Highway Department (now the Wyoming Department of Transportation). The family lived in the Maintenance Camp on Pole Creek for more than 30 years, until Mr. Zowada retired, and they moved to Buffalo. Mr. Zowada was a member of VFW, American Legion, Snow Buffs Snow Mobile Club, Elks Lodge and the polka club in Sheridan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the mountains. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mike, Robert and Edward. Survivors include his wife; and three sisters, Stella Bocek of Sheridan and Marge Gazur and Mary Younkins, both of Bellingham, Wash.
Graveside services for Robert C. Zingg, 76, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Zingg died Thursday, April 12, 2007, in the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. He was born Aug. 12, 1930, in Sheridan to Herbert R. and Madge (Son) Zingg. He grew up on a ranch southeast of Clearmont and attended Clearmont schools. He later worked for the government, driving a bus on the Powder River dam project. He was employed by Frickey's Heating & Air Conditioning in Sheridan and was employed with Husman Construction building the school in Upton. He later leased a farm on Soldier Creek Road. He married Grace Smith on Dec. 24, 1949, in Sheridan. Mr. Zingg spent two seasons working at the sugar beet factory in Hardin, Mont., then worked on various construction jobs including the schools in Buffalo and Basin. He worked approximately 10 years for ABC Builders before starting his own company, Robert Zingg-Builder, in 1965. He retired in 1979 but maintained business interests in the area. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, especially in RVs, and spending winters in Yuma, Ariz. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Zingg, and a brother, Jack. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a daughter, Diana Johnson of Sheridan; a sister, Marie Semler of Sheridan; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Jack M. Kekich, 65, of Glendale, Ariz., died April 3, 2007, in Glendale, according to his family. A memorial service, followed by cremation, took place Saturday. In accordance with his desire, his ashes will be scattered in the Big Horn Mountains this summer with a memorial service to be announced later. Mr. Kekich was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Butte, Mont., to Jack and Margaret Pearl (Gunnels) Kekich. He attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1959 graduate of Sheridan High School. After moving away, he returned to live in Sheridan from the mid-1980s until around 1997 or 1998, when he moved to Arizona, according to family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking and being outdoors. Survivors include his wife, Peggy O'Neil; a son, Kevin of Casper; a daughter, Kelli Renken of Sykesville, Md.; two brothers, John and R.G.; two sisters, Eileen Holland and Betty Turk; and five grandchildren.
Robert C. Zingg, 76, of Sheridan died April 12, 2007, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
A family gathering for Lloyd Long, 89, of Sheridan will be scheduled later this summer. Mr. Long died April 8, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Long was born Oct. 31, 1917, in Glenwood, Iowa, to Leonard and Fern (Teatsworth) Long. He graduated from high school in 1937. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served until 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He married Marjorie Mills on Sept. 24, 1962, in Buffalo. He enjoyed hiking, fishing and camping in the mountains, sports and gardening. Mrs. Long died the same day as her husband. Survivors include three children, Nancy Cook of Sheridan, Gary of Tucson, Ariz., and Mike of Selma, Ala.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who also died April 8; and by a sister, Jean Ratcliff. Survivors include a daughter, Susie Thompson of Sheridan; a son, Anthony Parton of Casper; a sister, Peggy Kethman, and brother, John Mills, both of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Sheridan native Jennifer Anne Jordan, 25, of Casper will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Latter-day Saints Church in Sheridan with Kendal Hoopes officiating. Viewing will be 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery after services Friday. Miss Jordan died April 6, 2007, in an automobile accident. She was born March 23, 1982, in Sheridan to Larry and Carla Blakeman. She grew up in Sheridan and was a 2000 graduate of Sheridan High School. She was married in 2003. She graduated from Sheridan College in 2006 as a certified nursing assistant, then moved to Midwest, where she trained as a first responder. She worked at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Survivors include two children, Sondra and JD; her mother, Carla Harvey of Sheridan; her father of Sheridan; a sister, April Carlton of Marshall, Mich.; a brother, Christopher Harvey of Sheridan; and her grandparents, Bob and Edith Blakeman of Sheridan and Beverly Allen of Lingle. Graveside services for Mary Lee Evans, 87, of Dayton will be in May in Dayton. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Evans died March 28, 2007, at her residence. She was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Wilmington, Del., to Beatrice Hammond Boggs and Walter Moore Boggs. She graduated from high school in Wilmington and moved to Denver with her family in the 1940s. She briefly attended the University of Denver before marrying LeRoy Evans in San Francisco on Jan. 10, 1945. She began teaching piano lessons at age 16. She enjoyed riding English-style, reading and, according to her family, collecting friends. She and Mr. Evans lived on a ranch in Fraser, Colo., from 1954-95. Mrs. Evans was director of Fraser Branch Library for many years. The Evanses moved to Dayton in 1995. Mrs. Evans was a member of a Bible study group. She enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and watching the change of seasons along the Tongue River. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Walter and Robert Boggs; and a granddaughter. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Mischke of Dayton; a son, Walter L. of Park City, Utah; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
BUFFALO Larry Stott, 65, of Buffalo died April 9, 2007, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Allen Schaberg and Pastor Joe Jarvis officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Emma Eloise Page, 90, of Denver will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Forman officiating. Mrs. Page died March 30, 2007, in Denver. She was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Cleveland, Okla., to Mason and Jenny (Olsen) Jones. She married William Page on Aug. 8, 1935, in Hayes, Kan. She spent her life as a homemaker and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Enga Neleta; and a son, Billy Paul. Sheridan native Jennifer Anne Jordan, 25, of Casper died April 6, 2007, in an automobile accident on Interstate 90 south of Sheridan. Visitation for Mildred K. Sutley, 96, of Sheridan will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Sutley died April 5, 2007, at her residence. Inurnment of cremains will be later in the family plot in Western Cemetery, Orion, Ill., under direction of Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home of Orion. Mrs. Sutley was born Feb. 9, 1911, in Orion to Alfred and Anna (Svenson) Bohman. She grew up and attended schools there and was a 1928 graduate of Orion High School. She attended nurse's training at the Lutheran Hospital in Moline, Ill., in 1938. She married William H. Sutley on May 10, 1946, in the Orion Baptist Church. The couple owned and operated funeral homes in Wyanet, Ill., for 20 years and in Torrington for 18 years before retiring in 1986. They moved to Sheridan in 1989. Mrs. Sutley had been a member of Order of the Eastern Star since 1942, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary since 1946, and American Legion Auxiliary since 1948. She was also a member of First United Church of Christ in Torrington. She enjoyed housekeeping, Swedish cooking, using sequins to make wall pictures of birds, watching wildlife, and growing flowers indoors. She was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Survivors include her husband; a son, Harry Dean of Eureka, Mont.; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Summerfield K. (Skeeter) Johnston III, 53, of Big Horn and Palm Beach, Fla., died April 6, 2007, in Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla. A member of the family that brought high-goal polo to Sheridan County, Mr. Johnston suffered head injuries during a polo match April 4 at his Everglades Polo Facility in Wellington, Fla., when his horse fell with him during play. This game was preparation for his team's participation in the 2007 U.S. Open Polo Tournament at the International Polo Club in Wellington. A celebration of his life is planned Tuesday in Florida. Born Jan. 8, 1954, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he graduated from Bright School grammar school and Baylor School in Chattanooga and from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. Mr. Johnston, along with his parents, Summerfield K. (Skey) Jr. and Gil, bought the Flying H Ranch and adjoining Meade Creek Ranch near Big Horn in 1985. Under Johnston family management, the polo club grew into one of the top polo operations in the country with high-goal polo players from South America and Europe as well as the United States coming here to compete. In 1997, he joined the family's Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group Inc. He served in several management positions including president of the company's food and restaurant division and of its Australian subsidiary, WinPac Ltd. He was president of the Group's Coca-Cola Bottling Company Northwest in Minneapolis and of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Cleveland, Tenn. Following the merger of Johnston Coca-Cola Bottling Group with Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. in 1991, he held a number of executive positions at CCE including vice president human resources; senior vice president and president of the Eastern North American Group, responsible for bottling operations in the Eastern United States; and executive vice president and chief strategy and business development officer. He retired from Coca-Cola Enterprises in February 2004 and had served as a member of the board of directors of Coca-Cola Enterprises since 2004. Coca-Cola Enterprises is the largest bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola products in the world. He was also chairman of the Krystal Co., which operates quick-serve restaurants throughout the Southeastern United States; and a member of the board of directors of SunTrust Bank of Chattanooga, N.A.; MetalTek International Inc., a specialty metal casting company; Southern Screens Entertainment LLC, which conducts real estate development and operates multiscreen cinema houses in Argentina; eSkye Solutions Inc., a distributor of channel-management software; and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. Known for his devotion to family, he also loved hunting and fishing, both of which he pursued throughout the world. He was an outstanding amateur player and leader in polo in the United States. He was a governor-at-large of the U.S. Polo Association and co-founder of the North American Polo League. He was captain of his teams that won the $100,000 Gold Cup, a 26-goal tournament, in 1988; the Cartier International Open in 1982; the USPA Heritage Cup twice; and the 2003 Hall of Fame Cup. His teams were three times runner-up in the U.S. Open Polo Tournament. Survivors include his wife, Leslie Buttram Johnston; a daughter, Louisa; his parents; three sisters, Katherine Johnston Tudor, Lavinia Johnston, and Gillian Johnston; a brother, Robert Johnston; and numerous nieces and nephews. He volunteered for the Air Force in 1940 and served as a guard in Germany. He was discharged on Dec. 5, 1945. He married Marie Schwabauer on June 27, 1944. He spent his life ranching and as a sheepherder. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Frank. Graveside services for Dorothy Helen Spielman, 94, of Sheridan were held Thursday in Gillette with the Rev. Tim Tromble officiating. Mrs. Spielman died March 29, 2007, at Westview Health Care Center. She was born March 15, 1913, in Gillette to Charles and Myrtle (Reed) Pacot. She grew up in the Gillette area. She married Aaron Spielman on Feb. 18, 1933, in Gillette. They lived on the family homestead near Rawhide Butte until 1941, then moved to Gillette. They lived in Wyodak from 1945 until 1958, when they retired and moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Spielman taught Sunday school for many years. Survivors include two sons, Donald of Gillette and Ronald of Sheridan; two daughters, Elsie Sicks of Gillette and Nancy Werner of Sheridan; two sisters, Velma Harlow and Beth McGee, both of Gillette; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hammett died March 31, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. She was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Lame Deer, Mont., to Harry and Beula (Graham) Kelsey. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan and also graduated from Sheridan College. She married Cecil Foss in 1949. After his death, she married Edward Lee Hammett on May 7, 1976. She worked in the psychiatric ward at Sheridan VA Medical Center, then at the City Water Treatment Plant until 1987, when she retired. A member of the Eagles 186 Auxiliary, she enjoyed oil painting, flower gardening, sewing and crafts. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Terry, and three brothers, Jim and Frank Kelsey and Dennis Thayer. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bill Foss of Ponder, Texas, and Jesse Hammett of Ranchester; two daughters, Sherri Powers of Breckenridge, Texas, and Colleen Chavira of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Bill Kelsey of Sheridan; two sisters, Ardis Bowman of Sheridan and Donna Yarrington of Littleton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mr. Sherman died April 1, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born June 5, 1915, in Rochester, N.Y. He married Edith Carder Arnold on July 27, 1940. They moved to Florida, where Mr. Sherman raised flowers and developed a precision aluminum manufacturing business. He sold his business, and the couple moved to Sheridan in 1964. He was past president of Sheridan Country Club and Rotary and a fundraiser for the YMCA. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom of Wyandotte, Mich., and Mike of Sheridan; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Marjorie E. Ray, 92, Sheridan, died April 1, 2007, at Westview Health Care Center. A private family gathering will take place later. Born Feb. 20, 1915, in York, Neb., to John and Martha (Brown) Roberts, she came to Wyoming as a young child and grew up in the Sinclair and Rawlins area. She married Darrel Ray on Dec. 14, 1934, in Nebraska. They lived near Thermopolis and Cody before moving to Dayton in 1961. Mrs. Ray operated her own restaurant until moving to Denver, where she operated an apartment house. After Mr. Ray died in 1970, she returned to the Sheridan area. She worked at the PK Ranch until moving to Big Creek Ranch near Encampment, where she worked until retiring to Casper. She returned to Sheridan in 1980. She enjoyed fishing, the mountains, and playing with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Matilda; two brothers, Tom and Dave; a grandson; and a great-grandson. Survivors include two sons, Earl of Federal Heights, Colo., and Darrel of Gillette; a daughter, Donna Madia of Sheridan; a brother, James Roberts of Encampment; a sister, Eleanor Martin of Saratoga; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Born April 25, 1935, in Wheatland to Charles E. and Marjorie E. (Ankney) Bergman, she married Roy Ekwall on June 30, 1959, in Rapid City. Mrs. Ekwall was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo and collecting spoons, magnets and other knickknacks. She belonged to Big Horn Mountain Eagles Aerie 4169 Auxiliary for 19 years, serving as trustee for 12 years. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 42 for 33 years and VFW Auxiliary Post 1560 for 29 years. She volunteered at the Catholic Church Thrift Shop for a number of years and also at VFW bingo. She was an election judge for many years. Survivors include her husband; six children, Rose Cita Heaton of Hubert, Utah, Duane and Michael Ekwall, both of Sheridan, Robert Ekwall of Rock Springs, Steve Ekwall of Manhattan, Kan., and Kathryn Ekwall of Minneapolis; four brothers; a sister; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services for Michael R. Herbison, 65, of Sheridan, were this morning at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Mr. Herbison died March 29, 2007, at his home. He was born May 3, 1941, in Los Angeles to Ray and Elizabeth Herbison. He attended school in Cheyenne and graduated from Central High School in 1960. He received a master's degree from the University of Wyoming and a master's degree in library science from the University of Texas-Austin in 1966. He moved to Casper, where he was head of libraries at the University of Wyoming-Casper. He was also dean of library sciences for the University of Nebraska-Kearney from 1992-2004, University of Alaska-Juneau from 1983-1992, and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs from 1968-1983. In Colorado Springs he secured the property owned and operated by the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. He was a volunteer at the theater group in Kearney, Neb., and was on the accreditation committee and past president of the American Libraries Association. He was responsible for the oversight and building of new libraries at the University of Alaska-Juneau and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. He backpacked, read, and played chess and poker. Survivors include his wife, Diana, whom he married July 1, 2006; two daughters, Shelley Parra of Worland and Andrea Boortz of Denver; one brother, Alan Herbison of Utah; two sisters, Janet Cowley of Cheyenne and Lenore Howen of California; three stepsons, Mark Sonderby of Sheridan, Anthony Sonderby of Germantown, Tenn., and Michael Sonderby of Sheridan; one stepdaughter, Diedry Arzy of Billings; and two granddaughters. Services for Frank Elmer Ross, 88, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Oregon Trails State Cemetery in Evansville. Mr. Ross died March 24, 2007, at the VA Medical Center nursing home unit in Sheridan, where he had resided the last three years. He was born June 19, 1918, in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., was raised in Aberdeen, Idaho, and graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in civil engineering. He served as an aviator in World War II on a B17 bomber and was shot down over Germany. He was married to Dorothy Scott for 21 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Basin Air Barber Shoppers and was a Boy Scout leader. Survivors include his daughter, Tara (Garry) Yake of Casper; his son, Frankie; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister; and two brothers. Kane Funeral Home is handling local arrangements.
Services for Jack Louis Newman, 79, of Sheridan, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Forman officiating. Mr. Newman died at his home March 28, 2007. He was born Feb. 10, 1928, in Sundance to Clarice and Carl Newman. He had been in the Sheridan area since 1967. He helped start the Decker Coal Mine as a blade operator and worked there for 17 years. On April 23, 1966, he married Lesta Confer. He was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge and the American Legion. He hunted, fished, boated and did carpentry. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Kevin Newman. Survivors include two sons, Bill Newman of Parker, Colo., and Lonny Newman of Buena Vista, Colo.; two daughters, Jacki Newman of Sheridan and Terry Frank of Louisville, Colo.; one brother, Billy Edward Newman of Gillette; and nine grandchildren.
