AUGUST 31, 2001 EDITION

Martha Parker

BILLINGS — Former Sheridan resident Martha T. Parker, 86, of Billings died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Michelotti, Sawyers & Nordquist of Billings is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Parker was born April 28, 1915, in Hyattville to Elmer H. and Mary E. Taylor. She moved to Wyola, Mont., in 1931 and to Thermopolis in 1936. She married James R. Parker July 2, 1937, in Cody. They lived in Casper for a short time, then moved to Billings in 1938 and to Sheridan later that year. They ranched south of Sheridan until 1956, when they moved into town. They moved to Billings in February 1962. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Order of the Eastern Star Moss Agate Chapter 126 and Daughters of the Nile. Her husband died in 1981. The funeral home lists no survivors. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Altar Guild.

Louis Ward

GREYBULL — Louis Mitchell Ward, 83, of Greybull died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. He was father of Stella Samson of Sheridan. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at the Mount View Cemetery in Basin with the Rev. George Pasek officiating. Burial will follow. Atwood Family Funeral Directors Inc. is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Ward was born March 27, 1918, in Yale, Okla., to John William Patrick and Ethel Alice (Chambers) Ward. He received his schooling in Claremore, Okla. He married Anna Louise Sanford March 27, 1943, in Claremore. He was at Pearl Harbor as a civilian when it was bombed. He enlisted as a “Sea Bee” in the U.S. Navy and served from 1943-52. He served in the South Pacific, Iwo Jima and Korea building roads and landing strips. He moved to Wyoming in 1956. Other survivors include his wife of Greybull; a son, Louis E. of Gillette; another daughter, Bonnie Ruth Coyne of Greybull; three sisters, Bonnie Huggins of California, Ruth Trost of Missouri and Etta Jean Isaacson of Washington; a brother, Robert of Texas; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Chester Sanders

KAYCEE — Chester Doyle Sanders, 80, of Kaycee died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. today and 8 a.m. until time of services Saturday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in charge of military honors.

Robert Lue Irion

Robert Lue Irion, 71, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place and memorial services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Broadus, Mont. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ellis Elsom

BUFFALO — Ellis Elsom, 69, died suddenly while traveling in Bismarck, N.D. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. today and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel followed by graveside services at the Elsom Family Ranch south of Buffalo. Mr. Elsom was born Oct. 27, 1931, in Buffalo to David and Lila Elsom. He was a 1949 graduate of Buffalo High School and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He married Harriett Ann Hepp June 17, 1955, in Buffalo. He married Edna Duncan June 26, 1973. She died in 1998. He married Nora Aviles May 8, 2000, in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife of Buffalo; two sons, Larry of Las Vegas and Jim of Buffalo; two daughters, Susan Moyes of Buffalo and Debbie Wentworth of Billings; a brother, J.D. of Buffalo; a sister, Gwen Criss of Wheatland; eight stepchildren, Michele Duncan, Mike Duncan and Scott Duncan, all of Buffalo, Mark Duncan of California, Rodin and Noreen, both of Maryland and Renz and Nazaryne, both of the Philippines; and nine grandchildren. Memorials may be made to United Way in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Louis Ward

Louis Mitchell Ward, 83, of Greybull died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services are pending with Atwood Family Funeral Directors in Greybull. Local arrangements were by Kane Funeral Home.

CLEARMONT — John Thomas Ahern, 63, of Clearmont died at his residence. Date of death has not been determined. A memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Paul Jones

Sheridan native Paul Vance Jones, 65, of Buffalo died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, after a battle with cancer. An open-house reception in his memory will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the family home, 25 Robinson Lane in Buffalo. Private interment will be at a later date on the ranch Mr. Jones operated for 30 years near Arvada. Mr. Jones was born March 29, 1936, in Sheridan to Herbert and Gertrude Owen Jones. He grew up on the family ranch near Kirby, Mont., and received his early years of schooling at Big Bend School. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1954 and attended the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he majored in mechanical engineering. He joined the Army and served at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver. He returned to the family ranch at Kirby after military duty. He married Kay Moore Bondi in 1962, and they made their home on a ranch near Arvada. He married Kandra Carr Knudson March 24, 1979. He continued to work at the ranch near Arvada and his home in Buffalo until his death. He served on the Predator Board for Sheridan and Johnson counties for many years and was a member of the board of directors for Farm Credit Services of the Midlands’ Production Credit Association from 1990-2000. He served on the PCA regional board from 1986-90. He was a commercial pilot and had been flying since the early 1960s. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob. Survivors include his wife, Kandra, of Buffalo; three sons, Steve Jones of Anchorage, Alaska, Wesley I. Bondi of Sheridan and Chris Knudson of Gillette; two daughters, Kuyler Jones Coopwood of Boulder and Karmen Knudson of Arvada; and one grandson. Charles Harbel

Charles Andrew Harbel, 77, of Sheridan died at his home Friday, Aug. 24, 2001. At his request, he will be cremated, and there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Harbel was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Sargent, Neb., to Andrew and Anna (Shinn) Harbel. He attended rural elementary schools and high school in Taylor, Neb., and moved to Sheridan in spring 1940 to work at Mydland Dairy. He later worked on the Moss Ranch near Parkman. He married Helen Foster Dec. 24, 1943, in Sheridan. He worked at the Kane and Burns ranches, service stations, Sally Forbes’ dairy and ranched on Meade Creek. He worked at Rehabilitation Enterprises of North East Wyoming four years before retiring in 1984. He was an active member of the Sheridan County Farm Bureau, serving as president of the Big Goose, Big Horn and Sheridan County bureaus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveled in the United States, Kenya and the British Isles. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry of Maryland and Jerry of Virginia; a daughter, Judi of Colorado; two sisters, Mary Kraft of Sheridan and Ella Shrader of California; a brother, Maurice of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Glenn Hoff

Glenn Hoff, 74, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sheridan Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Charles Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Masonic 43 Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Hoff was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Sheridan to Charles G. and Laura E. (Howell) Hoff. He attended Sheridan schools and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945. He later attended Heiman’s Business College. He was inducted into the Army in 1945, training at Fort Bliss, Texas, in the artillery before serving in the 53rd Field Artillery in the Pacific. He worked for CB&Q Railroad after returning home from the service. He later worked for Sheridan VA Medical Center and was supervisor in personal property management when he retired in 1984. He married Arlene M. Loucks Oct. 22, 1948, in Sheridan. They attended the Wesleyan Church in Sheridan. Mr. Hoff was a past master of Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43 A.F. & A.M., a past grand commander, past grand high priest, past most illustrious grand master and past M.E. grand high priest. He was past puissant sovereign of St. Denny Conclave, a member of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest, Equality York Rite Collage 97, KYCH, and past worthy patron of Friendship Chapter 51, Order of the Eastern Star, Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains and roller skating, and operated the community roller rink for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Denton Hoff. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Wayne of Sheridan; two daughters, Linda Westwang of Sheridan and Laurie Bartenhagen of Williston, N.D.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Marie King

Marie K. King, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. King was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Kleenburn to Faust and Josephine (Podio) Musso. She grew up in Newcastle and attended schools there, graduating from Newcastle High School. During World War II, she worked in defense plants in California. She married Donald A. King June 16, 1952, in the Catholic Church in Newcastle. She was a homemaker and an Avon sales representative. She also worked as secretary for a bank auditor. She was a member of the PTA, the Bot Sot camping group, Good Sams of America and the Albertson Altar Society. She enjoyed being with her family, camping, knitting and crocheting, needlepoint, rockhounding, the Arizona desert, card-playing, gardening, baking and cooking. She was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Mike of Helena, Mont., and Steve of Minneapolis; four daughters, Michelle Johnson of Driggs, Idaho, Jo Ellen Reichstadt of St. Paul, Minn., Kristi Hugulet of Whitehall, Mont., and Donna Brozovich of Spring Creek, Nev.; a sister, Angie Eixenberger of Sheridan; and five grandchildren. Shirley J. Russell, 66, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Russell was born Dec. 29, 1934, in Coriscana, Texas, to Thomas and Velma (Caskey) Cooper. She grew up in Texas and Alaska, graduating from high school in Skagway, Alaska. She married Robert Russell Jan. 28, 1955, in Skagway. They lived in Alaska, Oregon and Washington before coming to Sheridan in 1980. She enjoyed reading and writing. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; sons Steven of Tacoma, Wash., Trenton of Laramie and David of Morongo Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Carrie Dahl of Sheridan; a brother, James Cooper of Sheridan; one sister, Debra Boles of Lancaster, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Harry Allen Jones

Harry Allen Jones, 87, of Big Timber, Mont., and formerly of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber with pastor Jim Holmlund officiating. Viewing is until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at Lowery Funeral Home in Big Timber. Mr. Jones was born May 17, 1914, to Charles and Maggie (Allen) Jones in Big Timber. He married Elizabeth J. Olson Aug. 18, 1939, in Billings. They ranched in Basin from 1959 to 1984. They moved to Big Timber and stayed until 1989, when they moved to Sheridan. They moved back to Big Timber two weeks ago. He loved to garden and work in his shop. Survivors include his wife of Big Timber; one son, Monte of Sheridan; two daughters, Colleen Staley of Norman, Okla., and Dixie Melvin of Big Timber; one sister, Blanche Coil of Paso Robles, Calif.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, James Allen and Colin Allen; one sister, Chloe Moffett; and two brothers, Francis L. “Buck” Jones and Parker Jones.

Madeleine Lynch

Former Sheridan resident Madeleine Lynch, 82, of Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, July 22, 2001. Mass of Christian Burial was July 26 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Oakview, Mo. Mrs. Lynch was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Toronto to Ruben F. and Ellen Kee Lewis. She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She moved to Kansas in 1936 to study nursing at St. Mary College in Leavenworth and Providence Hospital in Kansas City. She married Jack Lynch in 1941. He died in 1994. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John F. “Jack” Lewis of Sheridan. Survivors include three daughters, Letty Baker of Gladstone, Mo., Beth Lynch-Gibbings of Chicago and Maggie Lynch of Kansas City; three sons, John of Huntington Beach, Calif., Dennis of St. Louis and Tim of Catonsville, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Louella Reinke

Louella E. Reinke, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Elks Section, with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Reinke was born Aug. 12, 1913 in Sheridan to Anton and Francis (Veskerna) Zahradnicek. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She graduated from Normal Training and received her teaching certificate from the University of Wyoming. She taught in rural schools at Big Goose and Dutch Creek. She married Fred Reinke May 17, 1936, in Buffalo. They ranched on Big Goose until 1972, when they moved to Sheridan. He died in 1973. Mrs. Reinke worked as checker at the truck stop and secretary in the Sheridan County Weed & Pest office until she retired. She was an avid bingo player and a member of the Big Goose Homemakers and Big Goose Community Club. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, E.A. Zahradnicek, and a grandson, Tom Thomas. Survivors include one son, Roger of Sheridan; a daughter, Marilyn Thomas of Sheridan; two sisters, Helen Plott of Parkman and Ruth Milne of Edgemont, S.D.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Harriet L. Bartels, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until noon Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kirk Peters officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Lynn Hoffman

Lynn M. Hoffman, 50, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Hoffman was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Sheridan to Leroy and Dorothy (Davis) Mooney. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan and attended Sheridan College, the University of Wyoming and Montana State University. She married Edward Hoffman Aug. 11, 1973, in Sheridan. She worked many years for the Wyoming Department of Employment. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the Altar Guild as well as president of the Friends of the Library and past president of the Jayceettes. She loved her family, gardening and Civil War history. She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two daughters, Erin Foote of Laramie and Kristen Hoffman of Sheridan; her mother of Sheridan; two brothers, Glenn Mooney of Sheridan and Stephen Mooney of Gillette; and a sister, Jeanine Bursell of Sheridan. Bethel Overlin

Sheridan native Bethel Katherine Overlin, 77, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore. Graveside services and interment were Aug. 9 in Aloha, Ore., with Pastor Barry King of the Palace of Praise United Pentecostal Church of Aloha officiating. Arrangements were with Donelson, Sewell & Mathew Mortuary of Hillsboro. Mrs. Overlin was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Sheridan to Harry O. and Bertha Mae Jaggers Garretson. She moved to the Salem, Ore., area with her family as a young woman. She married Raymond Channel in Salem Sept. 7, 1946. He died in 1968. She married Russell Overlin March 3, 1969, in Vancouver, Wash. He died in 2000. Mrs. Overlin worked as a cook most of her life, including at the Skelly Truck Stop in Sheridan. She also completed nurses aide training and worked at the Sheridan Hospital. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 1560 in Sheridan. She moved to Forest Grove, Ore., in 1988. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Miller. Survivors include three sons, Jim Channel of Hillsboro, John Channel of Muretta, Calif., and Jerry Channel of Sheridan; two daughters, Joyce Martin of Aloha and Jackie Channel of Tigard, Ore.; three stepchildren, Ronnie Overlin of Charlotte, N.C., Russell Overlin of Raleigh, N.C., and Lila Owens of Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Cecile Wyoma Klepinger, 75, of Evansville died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Casper with Steve Zurn officiating. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper. Mrs. Klepinger was born Aug. 16, 1925, to Emil P. and Sarah M. (Montgomery) Skovgaard on the family farm in North Dakota near Fullerton/LaMoure. She received nurse’s training in Valley City, N.D., and at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. She later worked at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County as a registered nurse. She married George N. Klepinger Nov. 1, 1947, in Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael R.; a brother, Ray Skovgaard; and a sister, Harriet Knisely. Survivors include her husband of Evansville; a son, Ken of Juneau, Alaska; four sisters, Barbara Schultz of Lonsdale, Minn., Marjorie Strand of Phoenix, Loris Benson of North Branch, Minn., and Jane Potts of LaMoure; two brothers, Joe Skovgaard of Minneapolis and Richard A. Skovgaard of Sebastian, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Pearl Trott, 95, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Little Big Horn Battlefield National Cemetery.

Former Sheridan resident Hal Walter Hampton, 48, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper of a heart attack. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael McMillan officiating. Mr. Hampton was born in Sheridan Aug. 27, 1952, to Tom and Carneeda (Sampson) Hampton. He grew up in Sheridan and married Deborah Crabtree May 29, 1971. They were married 18 years. He lived in Montana and Colorado for a time before settling in Gillette to be near family. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Charidy Hack. Survivors include three daughters, Nanette Cunningham of Wright, Candace McMillan of Powell and Faith Hampton of Gillette; a son, Caleb of Gillette; and eight grandchildren.

Lynn Popp

DAYTON — Lynn Popp, 75, of Dayton died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be at a later date. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Popp was born April 3, 1926, in Broadus, Mont., to John and Blanche (Metlin) Popp. He married Georgia Scobee May 31, 1951, in Billings. He worked on various ranches and farms and as a heavy-equipment operator on most highways in the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana in the 1950s and ‘60s. He went to work for the local mines in the 1970s and retired from Decker Coal in 1990. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing cribbage. He liked horses and helping the local ranchers with branding. He moved to Sheridan from Williston, N.D. He lived here 15 years, then moved to Dayton 25 years ago. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Eagles, United Mine Workers of America and International Engineer’s Local 400 in Montana. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife of Dayton; three sons, Robert L., Dennis D. and Eugene S., all of Gillette; two daughters, Annette M. Canfield of Gillette and Debra K. Popp of Sheridan; two sisters, Lavelle Engle of Rapid City and Beverly Bell of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Marie Jarrard

BUFFALO — Marie Christana Jarrard, 90, of Buffalo died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Johnson County Health Care Center. She was a member of Eastern Star, Sahida Temple in Sheridan. Funeral services were 10 a.m. today at Kaycee Cemetery with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Arrangements were with Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mrs. Jarrard was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Grundy County, Iowa, to Earl and Minnie Smith. The family later moved to South Dakota. She was a 1930 graduate of Blunt, S.D., High School and received an elementary teaching certificate from Northern State Teaching College in Aberdeen, S.D. She married Richard Jarrard Feb. 16, 1946, in Casper. He died in 1993, and she moved to Buffalo. She also was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile of Casper. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include a sister, Velma Higgins, and a half sister, Dorothy Wilcox, both of Sturgis, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Rathkamp

Mary Patricia Rathkamp, 63, of Wyola, Mont., died Saturday, August 11, 2001, in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings after a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan. Private inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hardin, Mont. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. Mrs. Rathkamp was born Nov. 13, 1937, in Glenco, Minn., to Leonard and Leona Ocha Herman. She grew up and attended schools in Winsted, Minn., and was a 1956 graduate of Howard Lake High School. She later attended beauty college in Minneapolis. She married Darrell Rathkamp Nov. 14, 1959, in Howard Lake. They made their home there, and she owned and operated a beauty shop. The family moved to the Wyola area in 1977 and operated the Pass Creek Angus Ranch. Mrs. Rathkamp was an active participant in the ranch and its operations. She enjoyed painting and artwork. Her family and ranch were focal points of her life. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon. Survivors include her husband of Wyola; a daughter, Lisa Rathkamp of Ranchester; two sons, Todd and Kurt of the family ranch; a brother, Ellsworth Herman of Minnesota; and five grandchildren. Walter F. Harris, 89, of Sheridan died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Mr. Harris was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Alliance, Neb., to Walter and Emma (Kulper) Harris. He came to Sheridan at age 5. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married Ada Gleason Sept. 5, 1953, in Sheridan. He worked 50 years as a reporter and sports editor for The Sheridan Press, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed sports and refereed high school basketball and football games for many years. He enjoyed working concession stands at the ballpark and rodeo events. He belonged to Elks Lodge 520, Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Nellie Harris; and a brother, Floyd. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Ellis of Aurora, Colo., and Gary Donnelly of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Naomi Bissell and Winifred Woodhead, both of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Charles Edward Huson, 70, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military honors. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Huson was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Sheridan to Harry and Mae (Chase) Huson. He grew up in the Clearmont area and graduated from Clearmont High School. He joined the United States Navy after graduation. After honorable discharge, he returned to Buffalo and married Mary E. Will. They were later divorced. He married Suzanne Milnichak in 1970; they were divorced in 1995. Mr. Huson worked for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company 19 years. He owned the John Deere H&B Inc. dealership in Buffalo and Gillette in 1970. He later sold insurance for Farm Bureau and was part owner in a limited partnership of an oilfield in Crook County in the 1980s and ‘90s. He had ranch holdings and he and his wife, Suzanne, purchased Ellis Hardware in 1987. He moved to Sheridan in November 1996. He was a member of Toastmasters, Past Master Anchor Lodge 7 Knights Templar, York Rite, the Shrine, Buckskin Horse Patrol, the Gillette and Buffalo Rotary clubs, the 49’ers Dance Club, the Sheridan Elks 520, National Rifle Association, American Legion, Old Time Musicians and County Sportman Association. He enjoyed Denver Bronco football, John Deere tractors, traveling, boating and being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas. Survivors include his companion, Louise Ralston of Sheridan; three sons, Ed Jr. of Gillette, Stephen of Sidney, Neb., and Paul of Buffalo; two daughters, Louisa Voden of Oklahoma City and Tobin Huson Overman of Buffalo; two brothers, Harry and Russell; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Miller was born March 15, 1918, in Sheridan to Leroy and Bertha (Batemen) Miller. He grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. He married June McKelvey in 1939 in Sheridan. She died in 1955. Mr. Miller worked on the bridge gang for CB&Q Railroad and was medically retired from the railroad when he was 48. He married Juanita Harris in 1957; they later divorced. He married Zina Anderson in 1972; she died in 1978. He married Evelyn Smith in Hardin, Mont., in 1979. She died in 1993. He was a lifelong resident of Sheridan and a member of Big Horn Mountain Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bingo, working in the yard and his two Boston terriers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight; a stepdaughter, Gladys Ring; and two granddaughters. Survivors include three sons, Jack of Ranchester, James of Burns and Jeff of Washington; three daughters, Linda Vallejo and Judy Miller, both of Sheridan, and Janice and Julie Miller, both of Washington; two stepsons, David Smith of Sheridan and Bob Smith of Gillette; a stepdaughter, Sharon Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. William Ackerley

William Allen Ackerley, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at his home in Sheridan of cancer. Cremation has taken place and graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Ackerley was born Aug. 29, 1934, in Sheridan to Allen Dunlap Ackerley and Cora Ann McDaniels. He grew up on the Ackerley Ranch on Buffalo Creek, where he attended school. In first grade, he received the highest achievable score in reading, an honor he was especially proud of. Mr. Ackerley married Goldie Ann Sayer in 1951. They ranched on the family homestead on Buffalo Creek. He drove trucks and worked throughout Wyoming on road construction. He married Cheryl Fender in 1972, and they operated Ackerley and Son Excavating. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his church, playing the guitar and mouth harp, gardening, woodworking and spending time with his grandson. After returning to Sheridan, he hauled mail to Billings and Casper and drove trucks for Mullinax. He belonged to Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sheridan, where he played music and sang. An infant son, Robert, preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Billy Lee of Sheridan; a daughter, Judith Ann Ackerley of Cheyenne; a brother, Albert of Elko, Nev.; a sister, Marge Rose of Mesa, Ariz.; and a grandson. He worked as an electrician for Modern Electric until his illness. He was a member of Old Apostolic Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, the outdoors, woodworking and construction. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sierra Lillian; a brother, Tom Whitmarsh; and his grandparents, Aarne and Alli Blomquist and Isaac Decker. Gene E. Abernatha, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Abernatha was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Oregon, Mo., to Edward and Mary (Kurtz) Furhman. The family came to Buffalo when she was 4 years old. She grew up and graduated from high school in Buffalo. She married Calvin Abernatha there Dec. 31, 1931. She was county secretary for the Department of Agriculture for 22 years until her retirement. Mr. Abernatha died in 1957, and she moved to Sheridan in 1961. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed spending time in the Big Horn Mountains, playing bingo and attending Sunday morning breakfast at the Moose Lodge. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard, and by four brothers and sisters. Survivors include one son, James of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Robert Pappenheim

Former Sheridan resident Robert W. Pappenheim, 64, of Eaton, Colo., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Eaton Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Eaton Cemetery. Allnutt Funeral Service is handling arrangements. Mr. Pappenheim was born March 2, 1937, in Eaton to Kathryn (Bedel) and William H. Pappenheim. He married Kay Hart Dec. 17, 1961, in Sterling, Colo. He served in the Marines from 1956 to 1959 and was a 1964 graduate of Colorado State University. He worked for several banks in Colorado and Wyoming, including First Wyoming Bank of Sheridan in 1986. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Dorothy. Survivors include his wife of Eaton; a son, Mark Conrad of Rawlins; a sister, Betty Monaghan of Denver; two brothers, James of Crown Point, Ind., and Paul of Aurora, Colo.; and two granddaughters. V.G. “Shorty” Martin

V.G. “Shorty” Martin, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Assembly of God Church with pastor John Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Martin was born May 13, 1921, in Mangum, Okla., to Vance and Myrtle (Roberts) Martin. He grew up and attended schools in Oklahoma and Oregon. He married Mildred Ridling and she died in 1998. He was in the Army during World War II and served at Guadalcanal and other Pacific theaters. He was wounded in action and discharged for disabilities related to his injuries. After the military, Mr. Martin worked for the U.S. Forest Service and the government until becoming totally disabled in 1963 and moving to Sheridan. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, AARP, and the Sunrise Assembly of God Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing, travel, crocheting, reading, mechanics, his family and the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; one son; two granddaughters; and numerous brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, Donald Martin of Laramie and David Martin of Sheridan; a daughter, Ellen Roberts, of Longmont, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Lina Blankenburg, 92, longtime Sheridan resident, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a short battle with cancer. Mrs. Blankenburg was born June 4, 1909, in Hoechst Vlbg., Austria, to Emma (Schneider) and Heinrich Gerer. She came to this country in March 1927. She met and married Otto F. Blankenburg in December the same year in Billings. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 70 years and a member of Martha Circle. She quilted with the ladies of the church each Wednesday from the time they started, and made and donated 20 to 30 pillows each month to the Sheridan Animal Shelter. She was the first female member of the United Teamsters Union in the state of Wyoming. She and her husband owned and operated the City Bakery at 44 S. Main St. before and during the World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; her youngest son, Edward, in 1982; her brother, Bruno Gerer, in 1975; and her sister, Paula Cass, this year. Survivors include her son, Walter Blankenburg of Sheridan; her daughter, Clara Wells of Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Olga Walker of Sheridan and Stephanie Fox of Portland, Ore.; and many nephews and nieces. Martha Herrick, 89, of Sheridan and formerly of Anderson, Ind., died at Sheridan Manor Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001. She enjoyed raising and showing dachshunds, riding and showing thoroughbred horses and owned and enjoyed antique automobiles. She attended the Christian Life Church of Sheridan. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Phil Trainer and Walter Herrick; three sisters; one niece; and one nephew. Survivors include two nephews, Karl Hunt of Sheridan and Thomas Hunt of Peoria, Ariz.; one niece, Kathryn Hunt Nesbitt of Millton, Ind.; and numerous other relatives.

Garth “Dan” Scott, 66, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial service will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Scott was born Nov. 4, 1934, in Indianapolis to Garth and Lilian (Henderson) Scott. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in agricultural engineering. He married Elizabeth Pitzer in 1956 in Midland, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1973, and was discharged with the rank of captain. He then worked as a sales representative for Coastal Chemical Co. for 25 years. He enjoyed camping and tennis. He was a member of the Rotary Club, National Rifle Association and the Sportman’s Club, all of Sheridan. Anna Ravndal

Sheridan native Anna Marie Ravndal, 86, died June 19, 2001, at her home in Auburn, Calif. Memorial services were June 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn. Interment was private. Arrangements were with Chapel of the Angels. Mrs. Ravndal was born Feb. 3, 1915, in Sheridan to Oscar and Fanny Johnson. She moved to Billings in 1943, then to California in 1993. She married Steve Henry Armstrong in 1932 in Sheridan. She worked 33 years for the Billings water department until retiring in 1976. She married Jon Ravndal in Billings in 1952. He died in 1976. Ernest ‘Bradley’ Hart

Ernest “Bradley” Hart, 63, of Sheridan died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at his residence. Cremation has taken place and services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date. Mr. Hart was born Feb. 6, 1938, to Ernest and Verna (Thomas) Hart. He completed high school, and served in the U.S. Army. He later married Rebecca Steigelman Dec. 23, 1983, in Sheridan. His greatest loves were fishing, hunting and his lodges. He was a member of Ashton Lodge No. 73, Eagles Lodge No. 4740, Kalif Temple, and the A&A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lynn Hart. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca, of Sheridan; two stepsons, Rick and Robert Duryea, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Vicky Davidson of Idaho and Ann Wade of Oklahoma; one brother, Jim Hart of California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothea Dean

Dorothea E. Dean, 92, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Casper with Pastor Nathan Doerr of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church officiating. Mrs. Dean was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Redfield, S.D., to Frank J. and Louise Amellia (Kopplin) Wagner. She married G. Harvey Dean May 31, 1931, in Redfield. She worked as a cub reporter in Aberdeen, S.D., and worked for the Sherwin-Williams Co. in sales. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, Order of Eastern Star, Sheridan Women’s Club and Circle of Friends with Sheridan Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a sister. Survivors include two sons, James G. of Casper and William L. of Brighton, Colo.; a brother, Richard Wagner of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Lucille Gilkison of Albany, Ore.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Evan Shaw

Former Sheridan resident Evan C. “Bud” Shaw, 93, of Laramie died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Laramie Care Center. Funeral services were 11 a.m. today at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home in Laramie with the Rev. Gary Wilken officiating. Interment was in Green Hill Cemetery. Mr. Shaw was born Sept. 20, 1907, in Albia, Iowa, to Fred and Maude Shaw. He married Mary Jean Brunyansky Jan. 8, 1930, in Cheyenne. They managed the Rosedale Dairy south of Laramie for three years. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1971 after 43 years. They lived in Sheridan for several years before moving to Laramie in the late 1990s. His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Dean of Laramie; three sisters, Lue Mahin, Frances Forsythe and Dorothy Plumb, all of Albia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Lena Weinberg

Lena “Sallee” Weinberg, 93, of Sheridan died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at her home. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be later. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Weinberg was born Jan. 5, 1908, in Nemansville, Ill., to Sena (Satorius) and James Emerson Sallee. She graduated from high school and attended the Michael Reese School of Nursing. She was associated with the University of Chicago. She married Morris Weinberg Aug. 8, 1941, in Chicago. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, riding horses and playing cards, especially canasta and pinochle. She also enjoyed listening to classical music and loved birds. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and two sisters. Survivors include a son, James D.; two sisters, Marguerite Klein and Wanda Curry; and three grandchildren.

James Fried

Former Sheridan-area resident James Leslie “Jim” Fried, 83, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home in Newcastle. Services were in Newcastle followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. He was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Jamestown, N.D., to Peter and Davina Fried. He grew up on the family homestead at Fried, N.D. He attended high school at LaPorte, Minn., and returned to Fried after graduation. He married LaVonne L. White June 9, 1940, while working in Devils Lake, N.D. Mr. Fried left farming for sales, working for Nash-Finch Grocers, Massey-Ferguson Farm Equipment, Monarch Clothing, Billings Dry Goods and William & Dickie Men’s Work Clothes. While in Sheridan he worked for Wyoming Sawmills and Mossholders Furniture. He was a member of the Sheridan Odd Fellows. He won an award for being the outstanding Massey-Ferguson salesman in the United States during November and December 1961. He also managed a Standard Oil service station in Medina, N.D., and Wold’s Department Store in Laurel, Mont. His last position was at the Metra Park Arena in Billings. He was a life member of Elks. He enjoyed fishing, reading, card-playing and rodeos. He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman, and a sister, Mildred Simle. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carole Baisch of Billings and Barbara Murphy of Newcastle; a son, James Fried of Helena, Mont.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ellen Gunter

Ellen R. Gunter, 86, of Sheridan died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic #8 Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Gunter was born June 23, 1915, in Leipzig, Germany, to Josef and Maria (Seliger) Reinisch. The family came to the United States in 1927, and Mrs. Gunter graduated from high school and business school in New York City. She worked as a bookkeeper for an architectural firm until 1937, when she returned to Germany. She worked as a clerk/stenographer in Leipzig. She taught German to children of the American Armed Forces in Bremerhaven, West Germany, from 1947 until she returned to the United States in 1951. She came to Eatons’ Ranch and worked at a bookkeeper until 1954, when she moved into Sheridan. She worked as a secretary/clerk at N.A. Nelson Construction until 1960. She married Albert Gunter July 29, 1958, in Sheridan. They lived in Lander and Gillette and returned to Sheridan in 1967. Mrs. Gunter was a bookkeeper for Panetta Brothers until 1977. She was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Does Drove 127. She enjoyed reading, travel and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Jean Richards of Denver; a brother, Stephen Moser of Rexburg, Idaho; two stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
