Vaunda Lee Jones

CORRECTION — The following obituary is being reprinted in its entirety because The Sheridan Press erred in the time of the open house. Vaunda Lee Jones, 66, of Story died Sunday, Aug. 28, at her residence. Her family will host an open house in her memory from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at her residence, 36 Fish Hatchery Road. Arrangements are with the Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Jones was born Feb. 6, 1939, in Sheridan to Kenneth and Frances Huggins. She began school in Story, but her family moved to other areas of the United States while she was a child. She graduated from high school in Lawrence, Kan., in 1956, and attended business school in Kansas City. She was a stewardess for American Airlines before she married Robert Schlegel in 1960 in Reno, Nev. They lived in New York City, where he was an engineer for Shell Oil. They later lived in Chicago and Iowa. Mr. Schlegel died in March 1970, and she moved to Story. She married Robert Jones in Buffalo in September 1970. They divorced in 1980. Mrs. Jones enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jim Schlegel. Survivors include a son, Michael Schlegel of Story; two daughters, Punky Legerski of Sheridan and Sharon Selberg of Story; her mother, of Story; a sister, Michelle Huggins of Story; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the St. Francis Animal Shelter or Project ALS in care of the funeral home.

 

Gerald F. Kelly

Gerald F. Kelly, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Graveside services with military honors will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sheridan Masonic Cemetery with Chaplin Arden Haeffner officiating. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Fund in care of Brenda Torrens and Nicole Christensen, Bank of the West, 2 N. Main St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

JoEva Benardis

JoEva Benardis, 76, of Casper died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, in the Wyoming Medical Center. She was mother of Mary Barnes of Sheridan. Funeral services were Aug. 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Casper with the Rev. Susan Honn officiating. Mrs. Benardis was born July 31, 1929, in Casper to Raymond and Ruth Fritts. She was a lifelong resident of Casper. She was preceded in death by her husband. Other survivors include another daughter, Dorris Waddell of Casper; four sons, Gus, John, Bob and David, all of Casper; two brothers, Raymond and Darrell; a sister, Doris; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ralph Watkins, 87, of Sheridan died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, in Sheridan. Arrangements are pending with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Stella Gorzalka

A Christian Wake Service for Stella Gorzalka, 82, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Gorzalka died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at her residence, with her family around her. She was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Dietz to Joe and Anna (Wierzbicki) Stuka. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Frank C. Gorzalka on Jan. 31, 1948, in Sheridan. She enjoyed embroidery, reading, cooking and talking with friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two infant brothers; two sisters, Nellie Mae and Annie Stuka; and a brother, Carl. Survivors include a son, Tom of Ulm; three daughters, Margie Rideout and Patti Bell, both of Sheridan, and Terri Fulton of Flower Mound, Texas; three sisters, Henrietta Sutphin and Mary Weber, both of Casper, and Wanda Godawski of Chicago; a brother, Walter Stuka of North Carolina; and seven grandchildren.

Gladys Ellen Pense

BUFFALO — Gladys Ellen Pense, 64, of Kaycee died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Harold Jarrard Park Building in Kaycee with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Burial will be in the Kaycee Cemetery with graveside rites. Frank Robert Edwards Jr.

A celebration of life for Frank Robert Edwards Jr., 85, of Banner will be Tuesday at the Floral Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. Arrangements, including cremation, are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Edwards died Monday, Aug. 22, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born May 10, 1920, in Pinckneyville, Ill., to Frank R. Edwards Sr. and Mabel Irene Sawyer. He played football in high school and was on scholarship at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale when, in his senior year, he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He taught aircraft maintenance courses at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. He married Marion Catherine Downs on June 29, 1945 in West Haven, Conn. At the end of World War II, Mr. Edwards continued in civil service and was based in Delaware, Illinois, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi before being transferred to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls in 1949. He taught, designed curriculum and later supervised in the helicopter flight refueling and aircraft maintenance school until his retirement in June 1976. He moved to Banner in May 2003 to be near his daughter. He was a lifelong member of Floral Heights United Methodist Church and enjoyed working at the Food Bank there. He was a member, director and advisory board member of Northwest Texas Field & Stream Association, and supported that organization's annual Kid Fishing Rodeo and the Sportsman Fair. After retirement, he developed an interest in woodcarving and was a member of the Texoma Woodcarvers in Walters, Okla. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and made annual fly fishing trips to Yellowstone National Park starting in 1954 and annual salmon fishing trips to Alaska and Vancouver Island starting in 1993. He was preceded in death by his wife, on Aug. 22, 1990, and a brother, Don. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Jane Edwards of Banner; and a sister, Marie Guthrie of Pinckneyville. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Sheridan or the Sheridan Senior Center.

 

Brian Lee Frappier

A memorial service for Brian Lee Frappier, 36, of Clearmont will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Arvada-Clearmont High School gymnasium with the Rev. Marty Rostad officiating. Arrangements, including cremation, are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Frappier died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, from injuries sustained in a automobile accident near Clearmont. He was born Sept. 14, 1968, in Waterville, Maine, to Maurice and Hazel (DePalmer) Frappier. He grew up and attended schools in Waterville. He married Cheryl Hart on Aug. 23, 2003, in Clearmont. He was a sales representative for Rocky Mountain Oilfield Warehouse of Casper, a member of the Clearmont Community Church and enjoyed playing cribbage with friends, socializing and cooking. He was preceded in death by a brother, Steve A. Frappier Sr. Survivors include his wife, of Clearmont; a son, Charles A. Leaf III of Buffalo; a daughter, Lena Lynn Frappier of Clearmont; two brothers, Buddy and Moe, both of Maine; two sisters, Tammy Frappier and Heather Brickett, both of Maine; and two stepbrothers, Scott and Jamie Ward, both of Maine; and his parents Hazel and Keven Tardiff and Maurice and Clennice Frappier.

 

A. John Graham

A. John Graham, 75, of Buffalo and former pastor of the Seventh-Day Adventist church in Sheridan, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in San Diego of injuries sustained in a fall. Burial will be at the Graham family plot in Buffalo at a later date. Mr. Graham was born Aug. 1, 1930, to John Samuel Graham and Julia Hester Sollars Graham. He attended schools in the Sussex area where his family owned ranches, herded sheep and cattle and mined coal. He graduated from Burlingame High School, then enrolled in Pacific Union College, a Seventh-day Adventist college near Napa, Calif. His theological studies were interrupted by the Korean War, in which he volunteered for the draft in order to serve as an Army medic with conscientious objector status. He was stationed near the front lines, where he held church services and helped tend soldiers before they were sent to MASH units. He returned to Pacific Union College and completed his education to become a Seventh-Day Adventist minister. He married V. Joyce Collins on Aug. 2, 1953. The Grahams went as missionaries to Botwood, Newfoundland, Canada, where he built a school, pastored two churches, and taught school for four years. Mr. Graham received his Master of Theology degree at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich. He pastored a church in Illinois for 16 years and led the building of schools, church additions, social service halls and other facilities. Mr. Graham taught at the Dinuba Junior Academy in California for two years, then moved to San Diego and started a janitorial business. He retired in 1998 and moved to Buffalo. He served as interim pastor at various churches then was hired full-time to pastor the SDA churches in Sheridan, Buffalo, Ten Sleep and Thermopolis. He retired from those duties on Aug. 1. He was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Harold and Raymond Bock; and two half-sisters, Evelyn and Margaret. Survivors include his wife, of Buffalo; five sons, J.R., Jim, Guy, Dan and David; a daughter, Julie; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

 

John Charles Terry

Former Sheridan resident John Charles Terry, 83, of Gillette died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, in Pioneer Manor in Gillette. Private family services will be at a later date. Arrangements are with the Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mr. Terry was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Buffalo to Charles O. and Bernice Cahill Terry. He was a 1940 graduate of Buffalo High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in October 1942 and served aboard the USS James O'Hara in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was discharged in December 1945 then recalled in December 1950 to serve in Korea as a radar man 1st class aboard the USS Charles E. Brannon. He married Dorothy Forsyth on Nov. 24, 1950, and they made their home in Buffalo where Mr. Terry was a plumber for George Schultz Plumbing. He and Mrs. Terry later owned and operated their own plumbing business in Buffalo for 34 years. They retired from the plumbing business in 1987 and moved to Sheridan. Mr. Terry worked for the HF Bar ranch until ill health forced his retirement. They moved to Gillette in August 2003. Mr. Terry enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Survivors include his wife, of Gillette; two daughters, Christine Roth of Gillette and Cathy Sherrard of Sundance; three granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Health Care Center's Alzheimer's Unit or the Pioneer Manor Alzheimer's Unit in care of the funeral home.

Doris M. Stampka

Private services for Doris M. Stampka, 93, of Sheridan will take place at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo, the Rev. George Von Kaenel officiating. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in North Dakota. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan. Mrs. Stampka died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, in Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. She was born Feb. 21, 1912, in Cooperstown, N.D., to Martin and Severina (Lawrence) Lieberg. She graduated from high school in 1930 and moved to Jamestown, N.D., with her parents. She graduated from business college in Jamestown and worked for the State Bank of North Dakota. She married Frank E. Stampka in 1936. They farmed near Fried, N.D., for 19 years, then moved into Jamestown in 1955. Mrs. Stampka managed the Montgomery Ward catalog department in Jamestown for 25 years. Mr. Stampka died in 1967. Mrs. Stampka moved to Sheridan in 1990 to be near her son. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry; three sisters, Eleanor Delzer, Jean Michaud and Lila Head; and two brothers, Kenneth and Harley Lieberg. Survivors include one son, Francis M. of Sheridan; a sister, Olga Trangsrud of Jamestown; a brother, Millard Lieberg of Orange, Calif.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Elizabeth Faye `Betty' Nimick

Sheridan native Elizabeth Faye “Betty” Nimick, 75, of Buffalo died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at her residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Community Building on the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Buffalo with the Right Rev. Vernon Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mrs. Nimick was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Sheridan to Curlie and Minnie Witzel. Her mother died when she was very young, and she was raised by Earl and Ethel Harper. She attended elementary school in Banner until age 14, when she went to a boarding school in New Mexico. She graduated from Brownmoor School in 1947. She graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Denver as a registered nurse. She was a surgical nurse at the old Sheridan Hospital. She married George Nimick on July 13, 1953, in Big Horn. They made their home on the 41 Ranch south of Buffalo on the North Fork of Crazy Woman Creek until 1984, when they retired and moved to Buffalo. Mr. Nimick died in July 1994. Mrs. Nimick enjoyed her children and grandchildren, painting and working in her yard and flower gardens. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include three sons, Howdy, Earl and Burr, all of Buffalo; three daughters, Terry Ahern of Buffalo, Bettina Nimick Wood of Ravensdale, Wash., and Mary B. Nimick of Sheridan; a brother, Bill Harper of Sheridan; and 12 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice or St. Luke's Episcopal Church in care of the funeral home.

Byron Elwyn Hobein

Former Sheridan resident Byron Elwyn Hobein, 93, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, of natural causes at Providence Horizon House. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Hobein was born July 27, 1912, in Lead, S.D. He attended Heiman's Business College. He worked in the Sheridan area for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in July 1944. He served as a ship fitter, second class, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He served during World War II and on a destroyer repair base in San Diego. He moved in 1948 to Alaska, where he owned and operated Hudson's Shoe Store until his retirement. He was a life member of Anchorage Elks Lodge 1351 and Anchorage Masonic Lodge 17 and a member of the Pioneers of Alaska. He spent many weekends at his cabin on the Kenai River at Cooper Landing. Survivors include his wife, Jean; a daughter, Cathy Stewart of Alaska; a brother, Dale Sickel of Sheridan; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren.

 

Susan Kay Malkuch

Susan Kay Malkuch, 59, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at her residence following a long illness. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services are planned later. Arrangements are with Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis. Mrs. Malkuch was born Sept. 13, 1945, in Thermopolis to Donnell and Flora (Beer) Anderson. She graduated with honors from Thermopolis High School. She married Robert A. Malkuch; they were later divorced. She was an employment specialist with Wyoming Job Service. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include a son, Yon of Sheridan; a daughter, Wendy L. Blankenburg of Los Angeles; a brother, Donnell Anderson of Woodland Hills, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Felicia LaToush

Felicia LaToush, 45, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at her Sheridan residence. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the T-T Ranch, 1376 Big Goose Road, with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Born Aug. 10, 1960, in Sheridan to William John and Carmen Lee (Ryker) Starkey, she moved as a small child with her family to Oklahoma City, where she grew up and attended school. She returned to Sheridan in 1991 and earned an Associate of Applied Science degree from Sheridan College in 1994. She married Rob LaToush on Sept. 3, 1994, in Story. Mrs. LaToush worked as a registered nurse in Hardin, Mont., and Sheridan. She enjoyed horseback riding, her flower garden, collecting bear figurines, salt and pepper shakers, and wristwatches, and especially spending time with her grandson. For the last three years, she fulfilled her dream of living in a house on a stream and owning her own horse. Her father and a brother preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Monica LaToush of Sheridan; her mother, Carmen Lee George of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a brother, Kevin Starkey of Littleton, Colo.; and a grandson. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Dorothy Arnold

Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Arnold, 85, of Sheridan, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Arnold died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. She was born July 4, 1920, in Arvada to James and Rachel (Sanders) Bell. She attended Wyoming schools for 14 years, then worked for the U.S. Air Force, traveling extensively for several years. She married Col. Henry H. Arnold Jr. on Oct. 27, 1968, at Fort Shafter in Honolulu. The couple later retired to Sheridan. Mrs. Arnold volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce and Holy Name School, where she was a teacher's assistant and taught religion to preschoolers. A published author, she was president of Sheridan County Republican Women in 1978. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Frances Lindquist of Charleston, S.C.; a stepson, Henry H. Arnold III of Volcano, Calif.; two brothers, William Bell of Seguin, Texas, and James Bell of Custer, Mont.; two sisters, Nancy Moses of Sheridan and Barbara Bell of Inglewood, Calif.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

 

Maureen Lenore (Starbuck) DiNunzio

Funeral services for Maureen Lenore (Starbuck) DiNunzio, 77, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Private family committal services will be Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. DiNunzio died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, in Sheridan. She was born July 27, 1928, in Denver to Clyde and Katherine (Hanson) Starbuck. She grew up in Brighton, Colo., and Denver and graduated from high school at St. Mary's Academy. She also graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in music and did graduate work in public administration at the University of Colorado. She married Michael Anthony DiNunzio on May 31, 1962, in Denver. She went to work for the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C., in 1971 and retired in 1986 as director of the Information and Regulations staff. She later was administrative assistant in the Italian Studies department at Georgetown University. She moved to Sheridan in 1999. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Carole DiNunzio; a sister, Lucille Strawn of Windham, Maine; a brother, Bertrand Starbuck of Denver; and two step-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter at 84 East Ridge Road.

Steven J. DeLauter

Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Steven James DeLauter, 57, of Gillette will be 1 p.m. today at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Harper of Vineyard Christian Fellowship and the Rev. Doug Rumsey of Antelope Valley Baptist Church officiating. Mr. DeLauter died Wednesday, Aug. 10, at his residence. He was a 1966 graduate of Sheridan High School. He was born May 6, 1948, in Duluth, Minn., to David & Gloria (Langlee) DeLauter. The family moved to Casper in 1961. He attended Casper College for a couple of years. He worked for Teton Homes until 1973. He moved to Gillette in 19079 in connection with a job selling for Union Supply. He married Debbie Sparks in Casper on Sept. 12, 1981. He was employed by Motion Industries at the time of his death. His hobbies included golf and sports. He was noted for making three holes-in-one during his lifetime. He was an 18-year member of Club Energize. Survivors include his wife and a daughter, Lindsey, both of Gillette; his parents of Fort Collins, Colo.; and three brothers, Dave and Mark, both of Fort Collins and Jeffrey of Dacono, Colo. Graveside services for Dorothy K. Waisner, 96, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Ms. Waisner died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Ms. Waisner was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Sheridan to Charles and Kathryn (Jennings) Waisner. She completed high school and college, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. She taught many years in Sheridan High School's English department, retiring in 1973. She enjoyed reading, gardening and pets. She was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn.

Gary Gene Gleason

Gary Gene Gleason, 53, of Smyrna, Tenn., died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was brother of Bud Gleason of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Smyrna with the Rev. Ronnie Meek officiating. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A native of Newcastle, Mr. Gleason served in the Army in Vietnam. He managed Sun Belt Rentals. He was preceded in death by his father, William Gleason. In addition to his brother, survivors include his wife, April; his mother, Hattie Gleason of Gillette; two daughters, Tori Padgett and Danielle Larson, both of Smyrna; four sons, Lowell Schutt of Cheyenne, Josh Gleason of Smyrna, Jacob Gleason of La Vergne, Tenn., and Justin Larson of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a sister, Sandy Reynolds of Gillette; and nine grandchildren. Noreen A. Hopkins

Memorial services for Noreen A. Hopkins, 89, of Story will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Tromble officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception at the Story Woman's Club will follow the services. Mrs. Hopkins died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. She was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Elgin, Neb., to Oscar and Mary (McKay) Carlson. She grew up on a homestead north of Gillette and graduated from high school in Gillette. She taught in rural schools in Campbell County from 1933-37. She married Sheridan Hopkins on May 1, 1937, in Gillette. They lived in several communities before moving to Story in 1950. They owned and operated Hopkins Realty in Story. Mrs. Hopkins later was the Story postmaster until 1974, when she retired. She was a Cub Scout leader and a founding member of Story Community Church. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and genealogy. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991; a son, Glen; two brothers, Carl and Bill; and a sister, Edith. Survivors include a son, David of Story; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Susan B. BUFFALO — Elsie Murdock, 61, of Kaycee died Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Danny Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with graveside rites. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Sharon Elizabeth Graves, 59, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at her residence in Sheridan County. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Davis officiating. Private burial will follow. Mrs. Graves was born Oct. 6, 1945, in St. Paul, Minn., to Lavern and Myrtle Schwartz. She graduated from high school in St. Paul in 1964. She married Charlie Graves on June 3, 1967, in St. Paul. They lived in Denver for nine months before moving to Barnum. They divorced in 1995. Mrs. Graves moved to Buffalo in 1997 and worked at Amie Holt Care Center until ill health forced her to retire. She was a member of Barnum Women's Club and enjoyed crafts, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include four sons, Tim and Dale, both of Barnum, and Pat and Tracy, both of Banner; a brother, Lavern Schwartz Jr. of St. Paul; a sister, Nicki Lund of Billings; and nine grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Relay for Life in care of the funeral home.

Charles Crowder

Funeral services for Charles Donald Crowder, 81, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Crowder died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles and Alice (Stratton) Crowder. He joined the Army in 1945, serving in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1947 due to an injury. He was an iron worker and English teacher. He was known to correspond with Lynette “Squeeky” Fromme, a member of the Charles Manson family, as well as with Sara Jane Moore (who attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford), Patty Hearst and Jean Harris, convicted for the murder of author Dr. Herman Tawnower. Mr. Crowder enjoyed playing the trumpet and drums and followed the jazz circuit in Cody, where he was nicknamed “Charlie on the moped” because he rode around town on one of the vehicles.

Robert Eugene Cole

Memorial services for Robert Eugene Cole, 56, of Story will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Chapel Church in Story with the Rev. Arden Haeffner officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Oregon Trail State Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Cole died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1949, in Gillette to Robert and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Cole. He grew up and graduated from high school in Midwest. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam at Phu Cat Air Base. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. He returned to Midwest after service and worked for Amoco Oil. He worked in Dickinson, N.D., and Evanston with the company. He married Kathryn Anderson on Feb. 20, 1975, in Lake Tahoe, Nev. He left Amoco Oil in 1986 and moved to Dayton, where he purchased Stockman's. He sold Stockman's in 1998 and moved to Story. A member of Sheridan Veterans of Foreign Wars, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, rodeo, country music and being with friends. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include a son, Josh of Sheridan; a daughter, Rewa of Windsor, Colo.; his father of Story; a sister, Cheryl Pesicka of Casper; and one grandson.

 

Thomas J. Killworth

A memorial Mass for former Sheridan resident Thomas J. Killworth, 89, of Story and Arizona, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Mr. Killworth died Friday, July 15, 2005, after suffering multiple injuries in a three-vehicle accident June 28 in Washington state. At the time of his death, he was being cared for at Bethany at Pacific in Everett, Wash. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Killworth was born June 16, 1916, in Glendive, Mont., to Logan and Candace (Murphy) Killworth. He spent his early years in Glendive and Sheridan. He graduated from Sheridan High School. He attended the University of Wyoming, seeking a degree in forestry, but World War II interrupted his studies. He joined the Army Air Force as a member of the Fifth Fighting Squadron, 52nd Fighter Group. After the war, he returned to help his father in Sawyers Grocery Store in Miles City, Mont. He married Georgia Shy. She died in 1988 after 41 years of marriage. He and his brother, Roger “Pat,” started Warehouse Market in Sheridan in 1968. Mr. Killworth was a longtime member of Kalif Shrine, Elks USA and the Lions Club. He married Shirley Peters Sanders in 2001. They divided their time between a winter home in Queen Valley, Ariz., and a summer home in Story. Mrs. Killworth died June 28 as a result of the accident. Mr. Killworth was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Dave, and a sister, Kathleen. Survivors include two daughters, Vicki Zimmerman of Snohomish, Wash., and Konnie Herron of Show Low, Ariz.; his brother, Pat; and three granddaughters. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children's Hospital or the donor's choice.

 

Jonathon Lee SoRelle

Jonathon Lee SoRelle, 16, of Thermopolis died Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Salt Lake City, where he was life-flighted after a rollover accident near Thermopolis. He was son, grandson, and brother of several Sheridan residents. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Meadowlark Lake in the Big Horn Mountains. A potluck dinner will follow the service. Those attending are asked to bring dinnerware and their own drinks. Arrangements are being handled by the family. Mr. SoRelle was born May 24, 1989, in Worland to John SoRelle and Sandra Pennock. He attended schools in Thermopolis. He attended Sheridan High School in 2004-05. He placed fifth in the Wyoming mathematics Who's Who. He enjoyed skateboarding, X-Box, movies, fishing, hunting and being with friends and family. Survivors include his father of Thermopolis; his mother of Sheridan; two sisters, Christina SoRelle and Hidie Henderson, both of Sheridan; his grandparents, Bill Gleason of Sheridan, Lynn Tacy of Geneva, Ala., and Mary SoRelle of Thermopolis; great-grandmother Hatti Gleason of Gillette; five aunts; five uncles; and several cousins.

 

Andy B. Hando

A memorial service for former Sheridan resident Andy B. Hando, 57, of Billings will be 10 a.m. Friday in First Christian Church in Sheridan. Mr. Hando died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at the home of his sister, Alice. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are being handled by the family. Mr. Hando was born Jan. 13, 1948, to Ambrose and Ethel (Hando) Watts. He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area. He served in the Army from 1967-69, including a tour in Vietnam from 1968-69. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and his dogs, Wiener and Champ. He also enjoyed painting landscapes, fishing, boating, camping, hunting and fast cars. He was a ranch hand in his younger years and later worked at XL Tire until 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim. Survivors include a son, Darrell Smith of Sheridan; four daughters, Kim Dennis of Pocatello, Idaho, Krissy Kosma of Columbus, Mont., Eva Hando of Fishtail, Mont., and Bobbie Brady of Sheridan; two stepdaughters, Carey Harp and Billie Caskey, both of Sheridan; three brothers, Paul of Sheridan and Robert and Mike, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Anna May Stubbert and Alice Henrickson, both of Billings; and 12 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church in Sheridan.

Mile `Gene' Rinker

Former Sheridan resident Mile “Gene” Rinker, 59, of Bangkok, Thailand, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, of progressive supernuclear palsy in Bangkok, according to his family. Born May 21, 1946, to Milo G. and Eleanor M. (Wood) Rinker, he grew up and attended school in Sheridan. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1966, including in South Korea from 1964 to 1965. Survivors include four children, Milo, Todd, Nicole and Cory, all of Southern California; his parents of Rialto, Calif.; two sisters, Judy Taylor of Sheridan and Gloria Rinker of Hendersonville, N.C.; six grandchildren; three nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may benefit Shriners' Crippled Children's Hospital, Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute, or donor's choice.
