Edward E. Dorsey

Edward E. Dorsey, 73, of Wright died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Interment of cremains will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Dorsey was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Minneapolis to Robert and Meda (Condra) Dorsey. After high school graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1948. He again entered the Army in 1950 and served until 1952, when he was honorably discharged. He was a Golden Glove trainer in Worland. He most recently worked as a radio broadcaster with KIML in Gillette. Survivors include four children, Michelle Lapine, Tammy Robinson, Vance Dorsey and Travis Dorsey; and special friend Georgia Opendack. Memorials are suggested to the Edward Dorsey Memorial Fund in care of First Interstate Bank, Box 3004, Gillette, WY 82717.

Richard C. Daniels

Richard C. Daniels, 64, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002. Cremation has taken place. No memorial services will be held. Interment of cremains will be in Dayton Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Daniels was born in Sheridan Oct. 29, 1938, to Russell “Rex” and Barbara (Carter) Daniels. He grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1957 with his twin brother, Raymond. Mr. Daniels served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his brother of Dublin, Calif., and his sister, Janis Loyd, of Otter, Mont.

Gladys Baumfalk

GILLETTE — Gladys Baumfalk, 86, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Pioneer Manor. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Joel Wright officiating. Interment will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. She was born Sept. 8, 1916, to Joe and Alice (Varah) Harrod. She married William Baumfalk in Gillette in 1937. They moved during World War II to California, where he worked for the shipyards with his brothers Hank and Jiggs. They returned to Gillette in 1948. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, AARP, the Presbyterian Church and Farm Bureau. She was active in Senior Center activities until she could not longer attend. Survivors include a son, Dan, of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Glenn Harrod of Sheridan and Lavern Harrod of Gillette; two grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; two sisters; and three brothers. Memorials are suggested to the North Eastern Wyoming Hospice, in care of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home, 210 W. Fifth St., Gillette, WY 82718.

Lucille Strauser

Lucille V. Strauser, 82, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Mrs. Strauser was born July 30, 1920, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Melvin and Lucille (Roberts) Duvall. She graduated from high school in St. Joseph. She moved to Buffalo in 1939. She met George Strauser there, and they married March 30, 1942, in Hardin, Mont. They ranched near Buffalo, and she operated a beauty shop in the Occidental Hotel until 1956. They moved to Montana in 1964, ranching near Pompeys Pillar. They retired from ranching in 1973 and moved to Billings, where they managed Colton Heights Apartments. They returned to Buffalo in 1979 and moved to Sheridan in 1984. Mrs. Strauser enjoyed crocheting, sewing, dancing, collecting dolls and making doll clothes. She was a member of the Rocking Doll Club and Silver Rebekah Lodge 6 in Buffalo. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. Survivors include a son, Robert of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Elks Youth Rodeo in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Olen Shanor

Sheridan native Olen Leroy Shanor, 84, of Deaver died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in the New Horizon Care Center in Lovell. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Deaver Cemetery with Curtis Abraham officiating. Arrangements are with Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Mr. Shanor was born June 19, 1918, in Sheridan to Jesse Owen and Charolette Verley Shanor. He married Merece Evelyn Gadbaw July 6, 1945, in Kalispell, Mont. He was a farmer and U.S. Army veteran. He enjoyed fishing, hunting prairie dogs, working with Plexiglas and games with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and a sister. Survivors include three daughters, Carol Powers of Deaver, Jean Rekdal of Riverton and Diana L. Johns of Rapid City; three brothers, Martin of Kalispell, Bob of Powell and Bill of Columbia Falls, Mont.; one sister, Betty Dalke of East Wenatchee, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Gale Kinzer

Gale Kinzer, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Eagles Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the officers of Eagles Lodge 186 officiating. Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Torrey Johnson

Ucross native Torrey Benton Johnson, 86, of Kirby, Mont., died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Hardin, Mont. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Friday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sheridan. Private disposition of the ashes will follow. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 16, 1916, at the Big Red Ranch in Ucross to William Victor Johnson and Jessamine Spear Johnson. The family moved to the X4 Ranch at Kirby in 1917. Mr. Johnson attended high school in Hardin and Sheridan. He attended the University of Montana and University of Chicago. He worked as a wrangler, guide and trapper from 1931 to 1938 at Spear O Wigwam in the Big Horn Mountains south of Sheridan. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing and, at the University of Chicago, won an amateur contest to play and sing every evening for the Warner Bros. Theater at Oak Park. The money he earned helped pay for his education. He worked as contractor for Bighorn National Forest in the 1930s to plant many of the high mountain lakes in the Cloud Peak Wilderness. He married Adrienne Marie Henderson March 28, 1940, in Hyattsville, Md. They ranched at Kirby until her death in 1998. Mr. Johnson was past president of the Big Horn County Livestock Association and president of the Big Horn County Farm Bureau. He served on the executive committee of the Montana Stock Growers Association from 1968-72 and was president of the association in 1984. He represented District 1 at the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention and helped rewrite the state Constitution which was ratified that year. He learned to fly in 1948 and was past president of the Montana Flying Farmers and Ranchers Association. He helped establish the International Flying Farmers and Ranchers Association. Survivors include his children, Sandra Smith of Banner, Robin Johnson of Billings, Jolly Tyler of Wyola, Mont., Phillip Johnson of Helena, Mont., and Tempe Javitz of California; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Shriners Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, Heritage Acres Nursing Home of Hardin, Montana Stock Growers Association or the Big Horn County Museum.

Geneva Della Studie

Geneva Della Studie, 79, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Canyon Hills Manor in Thermopolis. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army, 150 Tschirgi St., in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. She was born to Eddie and Minnie Leeper Oct. 3, 1923, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She married Willard Studie of Thurman, Iowa. They moved to Sheridan in 1961 from Gillette and lived most of their lives here. She belonged to the Salvation Army. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Survivors include her husband of Arvada; seven daughters, Sharon German, Barbara Reed, Phylis Loos, Debra Studie, Deanna Lynn Studie, Denise Studie and Della Studie; six sons, James German, Robert Reed, Henry Loos, Kenneth Copple, Darreld Studie and Dennis Studie.

 

Joseph Kristy

Joseph "Pete" Kristy, 93, of Sheridan died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services are planned this summer. Mr. Kristy was born in Dietz and attended schools there. He was considered the oldest living underground coal miner after working in both the Acme and Monarch mines for 30 years. He married Mary Ann Cheslar Feb. 3, 1936. Mrs. Kristy preceded her husband in death in 1998. Mr. Kristy was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time in the Big Horn Mountains fishing, hunting, rock-hunting and arrowhead-hunting. He taught and mentored Boy Scouts more than 50 years. Survivors include a son, Dennis of Sheridan; two daughters, Sharon Hanlon of Aurora, Colo., and Janice Beaudoin of Lewiston, Maine; a brother, Theodore of Sheridan; a sister, Teresa Rogers of California; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Diabetic Association in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Jay Barnes

Franklin "Jay" Barnes, 84, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 in Sheridan Manor. Mr. Barnes was born Sept. 25, 1918 to Perry E. and Bessie (Embler) Barnes. He graduated from Sheridan High School and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He married Marjorie Green in Hardin, Mont. on Dec. 31, 1946. Mr. Barnes did auto body work and painting for Rappone Motors in Sheridan, and he also repaired and sold old houses. He worked at the YMCA as the maintenance supervisor for many years until he retired. He was a life member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge and the American Legion, and he was a member of the First Christian Church. He loved fishing and going to the mountains. Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Marjorie "Margie" Barnes of Sheridan, one brother, Perry Barnes, Jr., of Casper, three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, a sister and a stepson. Funeral services for Mr. Barnes will be Saturday, Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment of his cremains will take place at a later date. Memorials may be offered to benefit the First Christian Church.

Rick Wallace

Rick W. Wallace, 48, of Story died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at his residence of natural causes. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services were this morning at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Mr. Wallace was born Aug. 30, 1954, in Oklahoma City to William and Irma (Compton) Wallace. He worked in construction after high school. He married Sharon Weston in 1982 in Glenrock. He continued construction work in Glenrock and in Story, where the family moved in 1994. He enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling and his Playstation. He loved all animals, especially his pets. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, several aunts and uncles and a nephew. Survivors include his wife; three sons, David of Story, Charles Finley of Birmingham, Ala., and Leo Finley of Portland, Tenn.; two daughters, Susan Finley of Birmingham and Bonnie Lara of San Diego; his parents of Sheridan; a brother, Nathan of Sheridan; a sister, Rhonda Wollen of Sheridan; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Pat Shields

Pat Shields, 69, a 1951 graduate of Sheridan High School, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at his home in Saratoga. Services are 11 a.m. Jan. 4 at the Saratoga High School gymnasium. Mr. Shields was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Loveland, Colo., to Stanley K. and Isabella C. (McCurrie) Shields. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 and graduated from Colorado State University in 1957. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service, the Mill Iron Ranch in Thermopolis, and the Palm Cattle Co. Ranch in Basin. He retired from the Saratoga school system in 1998 and worked for Mountain Veterinary Supply at the time of his death. He was known as a friend and a cowboy. Survivors include two brothers, John of Fort Collins, Colo., and Paul of Wheatland; and numerous nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Platte River Rodeo Association, P.O. Box 442, Saratoga, WY 82331. Arrangements are with Rostad Mortuary, Rawlins.

Bernard Williams

Bernard L. Williams Sr., 83, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Fraternal Order of Eagles 186 officiating. Burial will be in the FOE 186 section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by American Legion John Donald Garbutt Post 7 and the Wyoming National Guard. Mr. Williams was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Minot, N.D., to Clyde and Winifred (Benton) Williams. The family moved to Dietz, and Mr. Williams attended school there. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the U.S. Army Oct. 23, 1939, at Fort F.E. Warren in Cheyenne. He received parachute-jumping status Feb. 22, 1943, and served in the African and European theaters in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Battle Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. He married Charlotte Kilburn in England in August 1944. He was discharged from the Army June 18, 1945, and returned to Sheridan. He held various jobs before going to work at the Sheridan VAMC as a nurse's aide. He retired in 1978. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include four sons, Bernard Jr. of Twin Lake, Mich., Michael of Olathe, Kan., and James and David L., both of Sheridan; three sisters, Mary Ellen Goodman and Ada Huggins, both of Sheridan, and Norma Eide of Minot; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Dianne Dunning

Sheridan native Dianne Carole Dunning, 47, of Ashland, Mont., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in St. Vincent's Medical Center in Billings. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. Cremation will follow. Ms. Dunning was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Sheridan to Sidney Lee and Doris Lee Dunning. She grew up on Otter Creek outside Ashland and attended Ashland public school. She was a 1976 graduate of Sheridan High School. She was an artist, worked and trained horses and enjoyed barrel racing, team roping, rodeos and making jewelry. She enjoyed ranch work and her dogs, cats and horses. She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her mother, a son, Scott, and a daughter, Cary Mitzkus, all of Otter Creek; two brothers, Denny of Taylor Creek, Mont., and Dee of Otter Creek; and two sisters, Debbie Rukavina of Mesa, Ariz., and Sunlight Basin and Darla Dunning of Potomac, Mont.

Dolores Hill

Dolores (Smilanich) Hill, 90, of Sheridan died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place at Kane Crematory, and memorial services will be at the Chisholm (Minn.) Methodist Church at a later date. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home, and Rupp Funeral Home will handle arrangements in Chisholm. Mrs. Hill was born March 25, 1912, in France Location, Minn. She married Stanley Hill in 1935. She moved to Sheridan three and a half years ago from Buhl, Minn., to be near her son and his wife. She was an active member of the Buhl Chisholm Methodist Church and a member of Chisholm Easter Star for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Anne Krynovich; three brothers; and two nieces. Survivors include a daughter, Charmis Sarich of Minnesota; a son, Stanley of Sheridan; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a nephew; and one niece. Memorials may be made to the Chisholm Methodist Church.

Jay Barnes

Jay Barnes, 84, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 102 Conner St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Bernard L. Williams Sr., 83, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Albert Wolff

Albert Paul Wolff, 80, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Amie Holt Health Care Center in Buffalo. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be at a later date in the Veterans Home of Wyoming of Buffalo. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Wolff was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Henery's Lake, Idaho, to John William and Kathleine Helen (Simpson) Wolff. He attended schools in Henery's Lake until his family moved to Streeter, Ill., when he was 12. He entered the Army after school and served in England, Belgium, France and Germany during World War II. He received a certificate of appreciation from the government of France for his service there. He came to Wyoming after the war and worked for the Tollman Bros.' ranch on upper Nowood Creek near Worland. He married Vada Dye in Worland in 1966. She died in 1991. Mr. Wolff moved to the Veterans Home of Wyoming in Buffalo and married Ida Lea (DeLap) Burris Todd in January 1992 in Buffalo. He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and fishing. In addition to his first wife, a brother and sister preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Buffalo; a son, William of Prescott, Ariz.; two daughters, Niama Wolff and Kathy Maxsted, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Virginia Cambridge and Ruth Wolff, both of Streeter; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Josephine Moore

BIG HORN — Josephine Lois Moore, 87, of Big Horn died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral. A private memorial service will be at a later date. Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Ellendale, N.D., to Lester and Susie (Rose) Taylor. She married Guy Nicholas “Nick” Moore Oct. 4, 1934, in Aberdeen, S.D. They moved to Sheridan soon after. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Big Horn Woman's Club and the Big Horn Historical Society. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a 4-H leader while her children were growing up. She worked for several years in the Sheridan VA kitchen. She enjoyed gardening and baking. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters. Survivors include two sons, Phillip of Kennewick, Wash., and David of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Judy Adams of Sheridan and Roberta Adsit of Big Horn; a sister, Grace McCone of Arvada, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous step-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Big Horn Historical Society or to a charity of the donor's choice.

James LeBrun

James Robert “Jamie” LeBrun, 28, of Billings died as the result of an automobile accident Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002. His wife, Heather, is a former Sheridan resident. A celebration of Mr. LeBrun's life was Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee, Mont. Burial was in Rosebud Cemetery. Mr. LeBrun was born June 6, 1974, in Billings to Bob and Dianna LeBrun. He grew up on a ranch on Grove Creek near Fishtail and attended school in Absarokee, where he graduated from high school in 1992. He married Heather Dawn Bell Dec. 21, 1996, in Sheridan. He was a 2000 graduate of Montana State University-Billings with a degree in business administration and finance. He had started work at a loan officer at United Bank in Absarokee just before his death. Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Tyler James; his parents; two brothers, Andy of Great Falls, Mont., and Ben of Miles City, Mont.; grandparents Lee Charles and Rose Goddard of Columbus, Mont.; a grandmother, Dolores Willingham of Las Vegas; numerous uncles, aunts and cousins, two nieces and one nephew. A memorial has been established for Mr. LeBrun's son, and donations may be made in care of the U.S. National Bank, P.O. Box 910, Red Lodge, MT 59068.

Frank Jay Barnes, 84, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Alice Stapleton

Alice Stapleton, 97, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at her request. Mrs. Stapleton was born April 1, 1905, in Harrison, Neb., to Henry and Mary Amy (Grewell) Rose. In 1910 the family moved to a ranch 16 miles south of Arvada, and she attended rural schools. She married Roy Beach in Sheridan in 1925. He preceded her in death. She married William Stapleton July 14, 1988, in Sheridan, where she lived ever since. She loved being with her family. Mr. Stapleton also preceded her in death, as did a son, three brothers and two sisters. Three grandchildren survive, including Tony Beach of Sheridan. Memorials may benefit charity of donor's choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

John Frederick `Shep' Heldt

John Frederick `Shep' Heldt, 61, of Buffalo, formerly of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Heldt was born April 5, 1941, to Frederick and Delma (Dodd) Heldt. He was raised in The Dalles, Ore., and graduated from high school, where he excelled in baseball. He served in the U.S. Army and moved to Sheridan in 1964, where he was involved with the Dodd family ranch in Wyarno. He was in the insurance business for several years before moving to Buffalo, where he owned an apartment complex. He devoted his last 15 years to helping others recover from alcoholism. Survivors include his sister, Barbara Heldt Johnson; a niece; one nephew; and one cousin.

Dolores D. Hill

Dolores D. Hill, 90, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Lorene Whorton Egan

Lorene Whorton Egan, 85, Buffalo, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, at her home following a long illness. Funeral services are 3:30 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala. A memorial service will be Jan. 11 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Memorials may be made to the Red Cross in Buffalo, the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of choice in care of Adams Funeral Home. Egan is survived by three children, Anne Hays Egan of Santa Fe, N.M., Thomas P. Egan of Louisville, Ky., and John W. Egan of Buffalo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. Egan.

Lars Robert Hanson

Lars Robert Hanson, 27, a former Sheridan resident, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Kemmerer. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Hanson was born March 17, 1975, in Joliet, Ill., to Lawrence and Susan (Plumb) Hanson. His family moved to Sheridan when he was 3. He worked for N.A. Nelson Construction until 1997, when he went to work for T.I.C. doing industrial construction in different states. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, skiing, the mountains and children. Survivors include a companion, Danita Sperle, and their daughter, Shayla, of Kemmerer; his father and stepmother, Heather Hanson, of New Portland, Maine; his mother and stepfather, Susan and Ken Smith of Sheridan; a brother, Mike of Sheridan; four sisters, Kristin Simkins, April Phillips, Leah Hanson and Amy Smith, all of Sheridan; grandparents Vern and Dorothy Hanson of Romeoville, Ill.; and two nieces and two nephews. Genet Carroll

Genet H. Carroll, 90, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic 8 Oblong Square of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Carroll was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Franklin Grove, Ill., to Blaine and Maude Hussey. She grew up and graduated from high school in Franklin Grove and attended business college in Dixon, Ill. She came to Wyoming to stay with her aunt and uncle, Katherine and Claude Businga, and worked at Eatons’ Dude Ranch. She married Clifford H. Carroll Nov. 9, 1932. She was a member of First Baptist Church for 70 years. She was a regent of Daughters of the American Revolution, president of the Sheridan Women’s Club and Chapter T, PEO, past member of the Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer at Sheridan VA Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1996 and by a son, Don, a brother, Maurice, and a sister, Grace. Survivors include a son, Robert B. of Sheridan; a daughter, Frances Osgard of Yorba Linda, Calif.; a sister, Dotty Hillison of Franklin Grove; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. George Holmes

George B. “Sonny” Holmes, 72, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home, with graveside services following in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mr. Holmes was born in Sheridan to George and Emily “Judy” (Skepper) Holmes. He married Dixie Ellis Oct. 10, 1953. He ran the family ranch in Decker, Mont., for many years, then established and operated a diesel mechanic shop and trucking firm. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, dancing, rodeos, traveling and going to Las Vegas with his wife to play in Pan Tournaments. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 520 and a member of Kalif Horse Patrol, the Shrine, Blue Lodes and Eagles 186. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by a son, Mark Dennis Holmes, and a sister, Margaret Fleury. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Shelly; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and a nephew. Emma Morrill

Emma E. Morrill, 76, of Sheridan died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at her residence. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Charles Gifford officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Morrill was born June 27, 1926, in Lyme, N.H., to Alvin and Josephine (Brown) Derby. After high school graduation, she married Delmer Morrill Dec. 23, 1944. The couple moved to Sheridan in the early 1950s. She enjoyed swimming, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a special love for her cat, Joey. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Todd Walter. Survivors include a daughter, Marie Walter, of Buffalo; two sons, Robert and Bruce, both of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Merle Denton, 77, of Cody died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in St. Vincent's Hospital. Cremation has taken place. There were no services, at her request. She was a graduate of Big Horn High School. She was daughter of the late Alice and Henry Jenkins. A brother, Elmer, also preceded her in death. Survivors include four children, Kim Lang, Greg Denter, Bruce Baker and Larry Baker; and two sisters, Margaret Medley of Casper and Ada Smith of Sheridan.

Frank Harvey

Former Sheridan resident Frank Daniel Harvey, 73, of Big Horn County, Mont., died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 5 p.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Kent Bahruth officiating. Cremation will follow. Mr. Harvey was born March 26, 1929, in Hegler, Idaho, to Frank and Stella (Osborne) Harvey. He grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant with special recognition in electronics and communications. He was transferred to Japan, where he married Rino Shimokawara March 18, 1952, in Hokaido. They moved to Wyoming after his service and lived in Sheridan and Gillette. He worked many jobs until he returned to ranching near Kirby, Mont. He supported his children in their activities and was a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed playing musical instruments, natural healing, nature, hunting and fishing. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. Three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Kirby; four sons, Frank III, Fred and John, all of Gillette, and Milton of Sheridan; a daughter, Marcella Miller of Douglas; three brothers, John Barton, Leland Barton and Horace Harvey; three sisters, Hena Walker, Donna Smith and Marian Gosch; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Robert Affeldt

Robert D. "Butch" Affeldt, 51, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at his residence. Cremation has taken place with Kane Crematory. A memorial reception will be 1-3 p.m. Monday at Big Horn Mountain Eagles Aerie 4169. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Affeldt was born June 16, 1951, in Sheridan to Paul and Patricia (Hughes) Affeldt. He joined the military after high school, then worked as a handyman for most of his life. He lived in Ventura, Calif., returning to Sheridan seven years ago. He enjoyed carving, writing and crafts. A sister, Vicki Jean Hall, preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Robert S. of New Jersey and Robert D. Jr. of California; his mother, Patricia Bacon of Sheridan; his father of Ventura; and a brother, Marcus S. of Ventura.

Jay D. Wilson, 56, of Sheridan died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place with Kane Crematory. Memorial services will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Wilson was born Oct. 7, 1946, in Oakland, Calif., to William and Leslie (Williams) Wilson. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served in the Vietnam War. He worked as a mechanic after the Navy. He married Susan Pierson Aug. 25, 1978, in Jackson. They lived in Cody, then moved to Sheridan seven years ago. He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture, building and restoring antique cars, hunting and fishing. His parents and a brother preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two sons, Rob of Rainier, Wash., and Wayne of Gustine, Calif.; a daughter, Regina Cooper of Sacramento, Calif.; a stepson, Chris Bolte of Ten Sleep; three brothers, Lee of Bend, Ore., Reed of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Randy of Slaterville, Utah; two sisters, Cathy Chase and Melinda Best, both of Grants Pass, Ore.; and three grandchildren. Craig Johnson

Craig Johnson, 37, Gillette, died Friday, December 6, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services will be later in Illinois. Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 11, 1965, in Peoria, Ill., to Bruce and Betty Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Chicago suburbs. He received a marketing degree and worked in sales and marketing most of his adult life. Most recently he was employed as a manager for Mountain View Homes in Sheridan. He coached several sports teams from the time he was 15 years old, including a girls' softball team and a football team for undersized 8- to 10-year-olds, which he took to the league “Super Bowl.” He also enjoyed golf, travel and the Minnesota Vikings. He was the fiance of Karrie Jo Tracy of Gillette. His stepfather, Bill Alsop, preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Halley Megan Johnson, Gary, Ind.; his father and stepmother, Nancy Johnson, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; his mother, Betty Alsop, Chicago; a sister, Tracy Johnson, Florida; a brother, Paul Alsop, Chicago; a grandfather, Elmer Johnson, Illinois; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Tony L. Borelson, 76, of Sheridan, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Graveside services are noon Thursday at Blacks Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Borelson was born Feb. 12, 1926, in South Dakota to Sam and Irene Borelson. He joined the Navy following high school. He married Laura “Betty Jean” Richardson. He worked as a mechanic most of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, construction, ranch work and welding. He was a jack-of-all-trades. Doris Greenough

Doris Kathryn Corwin Greenough, 92, Sheridan, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, the Rev. David Duprey officiating, with burial in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Greenough was born March 15, 1910, in Hemet, Calif., to William and Jennie Mae (Cox) Corwin. She attended college in Riverside, Calif., and graduated from Santa Ana College. She enrolled in Normal School at Billings in 1933. She married Frank Greenough on Oct. 24, 1934, in Hardin, Mont. They lived in Wyola, Mont., then bought a ranch at Recluse in 1945. They bought a ranch at Sahuarita, Ariz., in 1963. They wintered in Arizona and summered in Story. Later they moved to Green Valley, Ariz. Her husband died in 1990, and she spent the following years in Hemet and Sheridan. A brother, Webb Corwin, and her adopted son, Jess Greenough, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Greenough published her autobiography, “Surviving the Good Life,” which told the life of a ranch woman. She belonged to Recluse Women's Club, 4-H, Wyoming CowBelles and Arizona CowBelles and enjoyed being with her family. The Wyoming CowBelles named her the state's Homemaker of the Year in 1958. Survivors include a sister, Ardis Councilman, Hemet; six children, Gary Greenough, Tucson, Ariz., Myrtle Ann Wallis, Recluse, Pat and Doug Greenough, both of Sheridan, Kathy York, Chino Valley, Ariz., and Mike Greenough, Cochise, Ariz.; 25 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Clarence “Bud” Daniels, 82, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his residence. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Mr. Daniels was born May 21, 1920, in Davis City, Iowa, to Clarence and Bertie Lee (Rex) Daniels. He grew up in southern Iowa and worked on the family farm. He married Carole Campbell Aug. 22, 1945, in Topeka, Kan. They lived in St. Joseph, Mo., and Omaha, Neb., where he was a printer for 27 years. They came to Sheridan in 1973, and he worked as a city meter reader and repairman until retiring in 1987. He enjoyed the mountains, fishing and woodworking. A brother, Rex, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Connie Ashford of Buffalo and Linda Golmitz of Sheridan; a brother, Pete of Leon, Iowa; a sister, Nina Lou Vaughn of Caldwell, Idaho; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Johnson lived in Rio Rancho 20 years. Katherine Edwards

Katherine B. Edwards, 91, of Sheridan died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at her residence. Viewing is today until 7 p.m. at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church with Pastor Robert Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Masonic Section. Mrs. Edwards was born Feb. 13, 1911, in Laramie to Edwin and Annie (Cameron) Baily. She grew up on a ranch near Centennial homesteaded by her grandparents in 1882. She was active in 4-H, received two Honor Scholarships in high school and graduated with a degree in home economics from the University of Wyoming. She taught school in Lingle and Newcastle before becoming a UW extension agent in Big Horn County. She later worked in the Sheridan County Extension Office, where she received an award for Meritorious Service from the county 4-H. She retired and married Everett Edwards on June 16, 1946. She volunteered with the Cub Scouts and Brownies and helped raise money for charity, county fairs and other activities. She served on boards of the American Association of University Women and the Northern Wyoming Community College. She was a member of the Sheridan Book Club and P.E.O. and was active with First Congregational Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976; a brother, Joel; and sister, Susan Baily Morgan of Laramie. Survivors include a daughter, Karyn Spears of Sheridan; a son, James Smith of Las Vegas; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to First Congregational Church.

Lorraine Jackson

M. Lorraine Jackson, 98, of Newton, Kan., died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in the Kansas Christian Home of Newton. She was mother of Florence Rardin of Sheridan. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery in Newton. Arrangements are with Petersen Funeral Home of Newton. Mrs. Jackson was born Oct. 25, 1904, in Nevada, Mo., to Oliver Franklin and Florence B. Davis. She married Fred L. Jackson Oct. 19, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo. He died in 1983. She was a member of First Christian Church of Newton. She co-owned Jackson-Usher Salvage during the 1940s. She won several blue ribbons for her knitting at the Kansas State Fair. Survivors include another daughter, Verla R. Hauck of Newton; a sister, Virdean Lucas of Lawrence, Kan.; and three nieces.

Anna P. Cross, 100, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Elks Section, with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Cross was born Oct. 11, 1902, in Eustis, Neb., to Christ and Caroline (Smith) Gaibler. She was a 1922 graduate of Eustis High School. She married Leslie M. Cross March 20, 1923, in Moorefield, Neb. They came to Sheridan in 1938. Mrs. Cross volunteered for many causes. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Church Circle 4, Eastern Star Naomi Chapter 2 and the Women's Club. She enjoyed working in the yard and garden. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, four sisters and four brothers. Survivors include a son, H. O. Ross Campbell

O. Ross Campbell, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Columbarium. Mr. Campbell was born July 25, 1922, in Medford, Ore., to Oren Ross Campbell Sr. and Alice (Oliver) Campbell. He grew up in Oregon, Kansas and Nebraska before moving to Denver. He was a 1940 graduate of East High School in Denver. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash. He began working in the theater business in 1937 at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver. He worked in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and South Dakota before coming to Wyoming in 1950. He married Margaret “Peg” Stouffer July 22, 1952, in Newcastle. They moved to Sheridan soon after. Mr. Campbell bought the Orpheum Theatre in spring 1953 and began Orpheum Theatres Inc., which included the WYO Theater, Skyline Drive-in and Centennial Theatres in Sheridan and the Bison and Sunset theatres in Buffalo. He and several friends formed Theatre Operators Inc. in 1962. The business became a regional theater chain in several states. He served on the board of the National Association of Theatre Owners and was vice president. He was 1980 Showester of the Year. He was president of the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce in 1957, managing director of All American Indian Days in 1959-60 and member of Big Horn Mountain Masonic Lodge 43, the Scottish Rite and Kalif Shrine, Elks Lodge 520 and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. He also served in the Vestry of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. A sister, Jane, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Steve “Ross” of Las Vegas and William “Bill” and Joseph “Joe,” both of Sheridan; two daughters, Sarah “Sally” Eaton of Sheridan and Margaret “Meg” of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Crippled Children's Fund or St. Peter's Organ Fund in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Fred Pate

Fred Pate, 89, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Inurnment will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, with Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Military rites will be by the Wyoming National Guard and John Donald Garbutt American Legion Post 7. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Pate was born June 15, 1913, in McCook, Neb., to Delbert and Drucilla (Hagerson) Pate. He grew up and attended schools in McCook before moving to Wyoming to work on ranches. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the start of World War II. He served in the European Theater, mainly in the mountains of Italy. He went to work for the VA Hospital in Hot Springs, S.D., after the war. He later transferred to the VA Hospital in Sheridan. He married Cornelia “Nellie” Ritola on Valentine's Day, 1973, in Sheridan. He was a life member of American Legion and Sheridan Elks Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, playing bingo, dancing and playing pool. He was a member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge entertainment committee for many years. He was preceded in death by his first wife and all but one of his siblings. Survivors include his wife, Nellie, of Sheridan; a stepson, Dr. Carl Ritola of Sheridan; a stepdaughter, Judy Pinder of Sheridan; a brother, “Jigs” of McCook; six step-grandchildren; seven great-step-grandchildren; several nieces and one nephew. Frank Marosok

Former Sheridan resident Frank Marosok died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, while visiting his family in Fort Worth, Texas. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Stoddard Funeral Home in Greeley, Colo. Mr. Marosok was a 1952 graduate of Sheridan High School. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Barbara Hauf of Sheridan in January 1958. His interests included gardening, spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren play sports and cheering for the Wyoming Cowboys and Boston Red Sox. Survivors include his wife; one son, Butch of Cheyenne; two daughters, Teresa Myers of Fort Worth and Vicki Gazdik of Longmont, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Kent Bahruth officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Gieselman was born April 26, 1941, in Sheridan to Albert and Mary (Suel) Schutte. She grew up in Sheridan, attended Taylor School and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1959. She married Robert Gieselman Sept. 27, 1959, in Sheridan. She worked at Conrads for a few years. She was a member of Family Life Center and enjoyed her flower garden, bowling, bingo and collecting dishes and crystal. Survivors include her husband; a son, Mark of Sheridan; a daughter, Michelle of Sheridan; her mother of Sheridan; four brothers, Richard Schutte of Arvada, Colo., and Albert, James and Robert Schutte, all of Sheridan; two sisters, Rose Kraft and MaDonna Rowe, both of Sheridan; and five grandchildren. Mary Aller

Mary E. Aller, 87, of Sheridan died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Black Hills National Cemetery. Mrs. Aller was born March 26, 1915, in Harborne, England, to Harry and Elizabeth (Gregory) Doggett. She attended St. Peter's Church of England School. She served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II and was stationed at Kidderminster, Worcestershire. She married Lester Aller, an American serviceman, June 7, 1945, in England. She left Southampton, England, aboard the Queen Mary in March 1946, then traveled by train from New York to Kansas to join her husband. They immigrated later to British Columbia, Canada. Mrs. Aller moved to Sheridan with her son in 1991. She enjoyed country rides and taking pictures of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982 and by a sister. Survivors include one son, David of Sheridan; and three daughters, Sharon Renner of Bismarck, N.D., Linda Newman of Springdale, Ark., and Janice Aller of Arlington, Va. Claudia L. Manz, 102, of Sheridan died Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mrs. Manz was born Nov. 2, 1900, in Wellington, Mo., to George and Anna Caroline (Breuer) Lay. She married Arthur Manz Jan. 19, 1925, in Littleton, Colo. They moved to Sheridan, where he worked for the railroad. Mrs. Manz lived in Sheridan for more than 65 years and worked as a clerk at several stores including the New York Store (later Stevens Fryberger Co.), J.C. Penney and Humphreys. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in PEO. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and four brothers. Survivors include one brother, George Lay of Aerola, Colo.; four sisters, Hanna Elder of Loma, Colo., Mary Gregory of Salem, Ill., Elizabeth Belmear of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Alice Randol of Cortez, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Beverly Adkins

Beverly Jean Adkins, 67, of Sheridan died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Adkins was born Oct. 15, 1935, to Lester and Bernice (Patterson) Zeirlien in Orange, Calif. She was chosen at age 17 to work as secretary in Washington, D.C., for a Wyoming senator. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wyoming and began a teaching career that spanned more than 20 years in three states. She also received a master of education degree from UW. She retired to Sheridan in 1995. She was a member of the National and Wyoming education associations and enjoyed sewing, computers, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on Oct. 15. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Smith of Sheridan and Robin Smith of Salt Lake City; a sister, Roberta Zeirlien of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. Margaret Stroup

Margaret Stroup, 98, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Stroup was born Nov. 18, 1904, in Swan Lake, Minn., to Jacob and Mary (Giefer) Miesen. She earned a teaching degree after graduating from high school, and taught for about five years. She married Harry A. Stroup in Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan. She went back to school in 1954 to get a business degree, then worked as a legal secretary for 16 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Holy Name Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She worked in the Thrift Shop and enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, crocheting, puzzles and flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Harold; and two daughters, Dorothy Shreve and Eilene Stroup. Survivors include three sons, Jack and Ray, both of Sheridan, and Ned of Gillette; a daughter, Alice Fisher of Garfield, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Floyd C. Barbour

Floyd C. “Stub” Barbour, 98, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at his residence. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today and 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Barbour was born March 7, 1905, in the Indian Territory near Nowata, Okla., to Clyde and Mallissa (Patchett) Barbour. The family moved to Newcastle in 1915. Mr. Barbour became a Sheridan resident in 1923 as a junior in high school, where he played football and basketball. He was a welder and boilermaker for CB&Q Railroad in Sheridan, working in the roundhouse. He later worked as a welder on the tipple at Monarch until the mid-1950s. He also worked at Paul Dowdy's gas station until he retired in 1971. He married Selena Morgan Feb. 6, 1932, in Billings. He belonged to First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan and served as a deacon for many years. He also was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge. After retirement, he was an avid golfer, playing 18 holes nearly every day into his 80s. He had a hole in one. Mr. Barbour also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Russell, Guy and Vern; two sisters, Vera and Grace; one son, Phillip; and one daughter, Marilyn. Survivors include a son, Alan of Laramie; a special friend, Virginia McClintock; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
