Marlin M. Mosley

 

Marlin M. Mosley, 33, of Casper, formerly of Sheridan, died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, in Casper. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ranchester Community Church with Pastor Jeff Browning officiating.  Born Sept. 8, 1975, in Sheridan to Bob and Sandra Mosley, he was known to family and friends as "Bouncer" or "Bounce." He grew up and attended school in Gillette. He attended trade school to become a mud engineer and worked in the Wyoming oil fields. He enjoyed spending time with his children, camping, fishing, and motorized dirt biking. Survivors include three children, Layne, Marlayna and Daltyn, all of Gillette; his mother, Sandra Love Jolley, and stepfather, Ed, of Sheridan; his father of New Mexico; a grandmother, Betty Love Jolovich of Dayton; six siblings, Marla, Rus, Becky, Bobby, Jessica, and Jayne; five stepsisters, Debbie, Syna, Laurie, Eydie, and Marjorie Jolley; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Cornelia ‘Nellie’ Pate

 

Cornelia "Nellie" Pate, 94, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at Kane Funeral Home. Services and interment will be private. Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Chicago to Peter and Irene Suranyi, she moved at age 9 months with her family to a homestead in Arvada. At age 18 she began working as a cook on the Fryburger Ranch, where she noted herself as "the best cook in Sheridan County." While working on the ranch she met foreman Carl Ritola. They married Dec. 7, 1935. She spent her life as a homemaker. Mr. Ritola died in 1968. In 1973 she married Fred Pate in Sheridan. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, crocheting, embroidery, and gardening and was known as an excellent seamstress. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her second husband; a half brother, Edward Suranyi; a sister, Violet Donnafield; and a grandson, Curt A. Ritola. Survivors include two children, Dr. Carl Ritola and Judy Pinder, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Mildred Larson of Port Angeles, Wash., and Evelyn Roche of San Antonio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Myalee Dawn Kethman

 

Myalee Dawn Kethman of Queen Creek, Ariz., died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, in Queen Creek. She was born July 23, 2007. Survivors include her parents, Joshua Kethman and Linsey Felton of Queen Creek, formerly of Sheridan; grandparents Kae Kethman and Pete Husman of Sheridan and Jim and Pam Felton of Cheyenne; great-grandmother Peggy Kethman of Sheridan; and brothers Kaleb Michael and Dylin Justin Kethman.

 John Victor Mill

John Victor Miller, 60, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, in Advanced Care Hospital of Montana in Billings. Viewing will be 4-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries with Barry Benth officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. At his request, please wear Hawaiian or casual attire to the service. Born May 11, 1948, in Sheridan to Victor E. Miller and Winifred A. (Salstrom) Miller, he grew up and graduated from high school in 1966 in Sheridan. He became interested in radiology while serving in the Army as a stateside medic between 1968 and 1972. He took formal training in radiology and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder before returning to Sheridan in 1977 and going to work in the private practice of Dr. Fred Lindemann. In 1996, he joined Sheridan Memorial Hospital as head of radiology, retiring in May 2007. He married Brenda Wilson on July 7, 1995, at Lake Tahoe in Nevada. The couple enjoyed travel, taking motor home trips to Canada and the Western states. They took several trips to Hawaii, where last winter he caught a 153-pound Ahi tuna, one of his favorite memories. They also enjoyed attending concerts and had seen their favorites: Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney. Mr. Miller enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golf, hunting, fishing, good food, cooking, the Denver Broncos, making wine, and cars, including a 1930 Model A that belonged to his grandfather and a 1967 Camero convertible. He was proud of his first hole-in-one, Sept. 17 on a par 4. Survivors include his mother; his wife; two daughters, Brandi Harris of Newark, Ohio, and Callie Drell of Sheridan; a stepdaughter, Kayla Wilson of Sheridan; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the John V. Miller Memorial Fund at First Interstate Bank c/o Margaret Sare to be used for a junior golf scholarship.

John Miller

 

John Miller, 60, of Sheridan died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, in Billings. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Tuesday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Barry Benth officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

 

John David Ward

 

John David Ward, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At his request, no formal services are planned. Family and friends will have a memorial gathering this summer in northwestern Colorado. Born May 22, 1928, in Hazelton, Pa., to Joseph and Thelma Ward, he spent his childhood in the Hazelton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., area. After high school, he joined the Army and was sent to postwar Germany. He returned to Pennsylvania, entering Pennsylvania State University to become a mining engineer like his father. After graduation, he worked for Bethlehem Steel in the “Circuit Program” for engineers at several coal mines in Pennsylvania. He later moved to Denver, where his parents were living, and enrolled in the University of Denver Law School. He met Judy Burgess, a secretary at the school; they married in April 1963 and resided in Denver. Mr. Ward  went into private practice before re-entering the mining industry in the early 1970s focusing on permitting and government relations. After his successful permitting of the Colowyo coal mine near Meeker, Colo., he was named an original member of the Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Board. In the early 1980s, he was named director of the Colorado Division of Mines under Gov. Richard Lamm, where he served until he was appointed by President Reagan as director of the Office of Surface Mining in Washington, D.C. After leaving public service, he returned to private law practice in Harrisburg, Pa., focusing on land-use issues. In 1995, the couple moved to Sheridan to semiretire and be closer to family. He was known for his infectious wit and “sparkling blue eyes.” He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a sister, Joan Atwater of Rochester, N.Y.; two children, Marcy Ward of Gem, Kan., and Doug Ward of Hayden, Idaho; and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Hospice of the Big Horns in Sheridan. Margaret Madron

Margaret Madron, 87, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. Viewing is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home.
Private interment will take place in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born June 15, 1921, to Dewey and Ethel Krohn in West Plains, Mo., she married Kenneth Madron in Sheridan on Aug. 10, 1940. She was a member of Wyoming Fiddlers and enjoyed playing guitar and dancing. She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Maakestad of Sheridan and Karen Lindstrom of Gillette; two sisters, Ruth Vannoy of Ranchester and Jean Castle of Billings; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Wayne Leslie Russell

Wayne Leslie Russell, 70, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008. Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will take place later. Born Feb. 18, 1938, in Fort Collins, Colo., he grew up in Laramie and graduated from Laramie High School. He loved horses and country living and worked on many ranches. He also owned a ranch and was known as a quiet, gentle man. He worked 18 years for Sheridan County School District 2 as a custodian. He married Anita Vass, who died of cancer. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Russell; a sister, Doris Johnson of Laramie; a brother, James Russell of Casper; two sons, Les of Sheridan and Dean of Canada; a daughter, DeeDee of Livingston, Mont.; four stepdaughters, Pam Yates of Gillette, Janet Scharen of Shell, Lisa Flinders of Kamas, Utah, and Cheryl Good of Gillette; two stepsons, Billy Suranyi of Arvada and John Finley of Austin, Texas; 34 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Jeanne H. Donlin

Jeanne H. Donlin, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at the Talahi Care Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Her daughter is Janice Maier of Sheridan. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Monday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud, Minn. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Shorewood, Minn. Arrangements are with Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Born May 3, 1915, in Minneapolis to Bill and Chloe (Chamberland) Clark, she grew up in Excelsior, Minn., graduating from Excelsior High School. She married John Donlin and they settled at Lake Minnetonka before moving to St. Cloud in the 1960s.
A lifelong singer, she performed in operettas, church choir, even singing in the nursing home. Her father was an immigrant from Scotland, and she was proud of her Scottish blood. She was known to work hard at being frugal. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Jerry Clark. In addition to her daughter, survivors include two grandchildren, five great-grandsons, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

 

Helen M. Currie

Helen M. Currie, 98, of Big Horn, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Sunday. Due to inclement weather, private graveside services will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn with a memorial service planned later. Born Sept. 19, 1910, to Roy and Mary (Ford) Johnson in a tar paper shack on their homestead south of Upton, she attended one-room schools in Weston County and graduated from Upton High School in 1929. She attended the University of Wyoming and traveled extensively. She taught in multiple one-room schools in Weston County, where she met and married John S. Currie in 1944. The Curries ranched at Nye, Mont., until moving to Big Horn in 1947. When her children started school, she attended the University of Colorado, returned to the University of Wyoming and graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She resumed her career in 1958 as a second-grade teacher. She taught more than 700 students in 33 years and she stayed in touch with many of them. Mrs. Currie was active in Cub Scouts, Big Horn Woman’s Club, Red Grade Homemakers, Big Horn City Historical Society, Sheridan County Historical Society, University of Wyoming Alumni Association, Sheridan County Retired Employees Association, Wyoming Education Association, National Education Association, Public Health Board, Daughters of the Nile, and Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed Daybreak activities at the Sheridan Senior Center and bingo at Westview. She was widely known as “Grammie” in addition to Miss Johnson and Mrs. Currie. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Stuart J. Currie. Survivors include two sons, James M. Currie of South Carolina and John A. Currie of Evanston; and a daughter, Judy M. Slack of Sheridan.

Ronald R. Maloney

Ronald R. Maloney, 58, formerly of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at his home in Colony, Okla. No services are planned. Born Nov. 26, 1950, in Marshall, Ill., to Elbert L. and Dorothy Maloney, he grew up and attended school in Sheridan before moving to Oklahoma. He enjoyed fishing and working in his garden.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, John L. Maloney. Survivors include his mother; his wife, Vickie; two sisters, Cheryl Maloney of Sheridan and Deana Campbell of Arizona; and a brother, Tim Maloney of Sheridan.

Pieda Martinez

Pieda Martinez, 89, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. A Christian wake service was Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be March 14 at Sacred Heart Church in Espanola, N.M. Born March 15, 1919, to Tomas and Guadalupe Garcia in Coyote, N.M., she attended schools in Santa Fe, N.M. She married Benito Martinez on Dec. 15, 1943. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Stella Montano of Sheridan; two sons, Tom Garcia of Gaithersburg, Md., and Tim Garcia of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Atocha Gonzales and Adelires Trujillo of Espanola; two brothers, Tomas Garcia of La Sal, Utah, and Pete Garcia of Coyote; and four grandchildren. Henry R. Bonvillain

Henry R. Bonvillain, 65, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in Sheridan V.A. Medical Center. Memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at the VA chapel with Chaplain E. Edward Diller officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Dec. 31, 1942, in Amory, Miss., to Henry and Ruby (Box) Langford, he grew up and attended schools in California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 and served in Vietnam. After the service he returned to California and worked construction. He later moved to Bend, Ore. In the early 1970s, he moved to Sheridan. He graduated from the welding program at Sheridan College, then worked as a welder on construction jobs. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and metal detecting. Survivors include his wife, Sandy; two daughters, Yvetter Petry of Billings and Samantha Olsen of Sheridan; two brothers, Rick Bonvillain of Nevada and David Bonvillain of California; a sister, Brenda Harger of California; and two grandchildren. Ruth Rudolph

Ruth Rudolph, 80, of Sheridan, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of her daughter, Paula Ellis, 10 Beaver Drive, Sheridan, with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Nov. 23, 1928, in Elmwood, Neb., to Milton and Delta (Fifer) Rodaway, she grew up in Nebraska graduating from Eagle High School, where she was class valedictorian. She married Marvin Rudolph in Nebraska. They moved in 1955 to Denver, where she worked as a secretary for Dixon Paper Co. and Kelly Girls. Mr. Rudolph died in 1994. Mrs. Rudolph moved to Sheridan in 2003. She was a member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed working the New York Times crossword puzzle and playing piano and loved her little dogs. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd. Survivors include a second daughter, Leslie Cooke of Sheridan; and three brothers, Joy Rodaway of Littleton, Colo., Keith Rodaway of Lincoln, Neb., and Gene Rodaway of Denver. Lester G. Fox

Lester Fox, 96, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing will be 1-3 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Dec. 26, 1911, in Oklahoma to John and Elsie (Warren) Fox, he came to Sheridan as a teenager and graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Vendeta Wheeler on Nov. 10, 1932, in Hardin, Mont. They ranched near Clearmont. Mr. Fox also worked at other jobs until he went to work for the CB&Q Railroad as a switchman in 1937. During his years at the railroad, he continued to ranch and operated Fox Dairy. He retired from the railroad as yardmaster in 1975 but continued helping his son and grandson with the dairy and ranching. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Snomads, and the YMCA. He enjoyed snow machining, fishing, horses, the mountains, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dean, in 1998. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Barbara Roach of Oakland, Calif.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Clifford J. Sanders

Clifford J. Sanders, 84, Buffalo, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at Johnson County Healthcare Center. A private memorial service will be later. Born Nov. 28, 1924, in Downey, Calif., to Jess A. and Mary Sanders, he grew up in Wyoming, graduating from high school as valedictorian in Worland. He attended the University of Wyoming until called to serve in the Chemical Mortar Battalion, U.S. Army, in the European Theater near the end of World War II. After the war he earned a civil engineering degree from UW, completing his college education on the GI Bill and graduating as Outstanding Senior Civil Engineer in 1949. He was a licensed professional engineer and professional land surveyor. The family lived in Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming, where he practiced as a civil engineer for firms such as Paper Calmenson, Stearns Rogers, and Husky Oil Co. He moved with his family to Buffalo in 1965. For the last 16 years of his career he was city engineer and director of public utilities for the city of Sheridan. Under Mayor Dean Marshall and acting Mayor Bill Lilley, he was proud of accomplishments for the city including: building a new sewage treatment plant and a 4 million-gallon water storage tank that improved water pressure; and renovating the treatment plant water intake under the Sheridan Area Water Supply project. As city engineer he oversaw the formation of four special improvement districts, including the South Main Street extension, Highland Avenue, North Heights and the Park Street/Canby area. Establishing parks and green spaces for Sheridan citizens was important to him, as well as maintaining low utility rates. He was also involved with completing the nine-hole addition and water reservoir at the municipal golf course; installation of a-coin operated water dispenser at Washington Park for citizens to purchase clean water; and construction of Sheridan Animal Shelter in a vacant building at the sewage treatment plant. Mr. Sanders oversaw reconstruction of the Eighth and West Loucks Street bridges, construction of new bridges on West 11th and Gould streets, and construction of the new connection of Sheridan to Coffeen avenues. He believed in work force equality and diversity and was one of the first to hire women for technical positions in the treatment plants. He was a member in the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, Shoshone Masonic Lodge No. 21 for more than 40 years. He enjoyed traveling with his family, working on building improvements to his home and properties, and keeping abreast of the news and new technologies. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Buffalo; a son, Scott W. Sanders of Billings; two daughters, Carol Sanders-Leyseth of Bellevue, Wash., and Christy Sanders-Meena of Redmond, Wash.; a sister, Charlotte Coppinger of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit St. Francis Animal Shelter, Johnson County Library, Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter or Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library in care of Adams Funeral Home at 351 N. Robert Floyd Everson

Robert Floyd Everson, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with Ed Roche officiating. Born April 24, 1920, in Clinton, Iowa, to Charles Everson and Carol Harper, he grew up and attended schools in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1939 to 1967. He participated in World War II and the Korean War. While in the service he met and married Dolores Elaine Melvin. He retired from the Army and went to work as an industrial development manager in Fargo, N.D. The family moved to Sheridan in 2000. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, crafting, and gardening. Mr. Everson was a member of the Eagles, Elks Lodge 520, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by five brothers. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Robert of Sheridan, Michael of Littleton, Colo., Richard of Lakewood, Colo., Terry of Summerville, N.C., and Greg of Fargo; two daughters, Kathi Olson of Fargo and Bonnie Hendricks of Clinton; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grand children; and many nieces and nephews. George Klepinger, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings. Cremation has taken place. At Mr. Klepinger’s request, there will be no services.

Mary Allen

Mary Allen, 53, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Oct. 23, 1955, in Sheridan to Clarence and Doris Norwood, she managed the American Legion for many years. She enjoyed taking gambling trips with her companion, Dave Crocker of Sheridan, and her friends. She enjoyed her job at the Legion, spending time with the old and new friends she made while working there. She enjoyed her flower gardens, shopping with her daughters and sisters, and playing cribbage at the Legion. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her daughters, Jessica McDaniel and Crystal McDaniel, both of Longmont, Colo.; siblings Jack Norwood and Irene Sager, both of Sheridan, and Cheryl Sandborn of Story; and two grandchildren. Mary Allen

Mary Allen, 53, of Sheridan died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

 

William I. Hanks

William I. Hanks, 80, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned later in Page, Ariz. Born Nov. 8, 1928, in Missouri to William D. and Ruth Hanks, he grew up and attended school in many small towns in Missouri and Michigan. In 1946 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1950. That same year he married Donna Mae Bitz in Sublimity, Ore. The couple lived in several small Western states due to his employment with Atlantic Research Building, test-firing missiles during the late ’50s and ’60s. In 1970 the family moved to Page, at which time he became an outboard/inboard boat mechanic employed at Wahweap Marina, Lake Powell. In 1974 he went to work for Salt River Project on the railroad that shipped coal to the generating station. He retired in 1986. Mr. Hanks enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golf, fishing, archery elk hunting, watching professional baseball and ice hockey. He especially enjoyed the Little League World Series. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and was known as a distinguished pistol and big-bore rifle shooter. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William of Loveland, Colo., and Robert of Sheridan; two daughters, Barbara Wilson and Rebecca Self, both of Page; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

Morris Dixon

Morris Dixon, 83, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born April 13, 1925, to Morris and Jane Dixon in Radnor, Pa., he was a graduate of Haverford High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. After military service, he made his living as a horse trainer and rancher. Mr. Dixon married Suzanne Christensen in Birney, Mont., on Dec. 12, 1992. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, working with and training horses, ranching and fishing. Survivors include his wife; two siblings, Sam Dixon of Toronto and Edie Gitlin of Malvern, Pa.; four children, Kathy Smiley of Sheridan, Daniel Dixon of Gardnerville, Nev., Mark Dixon of Bozeman, Mont., and Shawn Dixon of Sheridan; three stepchildren, Tony Christensen of Sheridan and Shawn and Stephen Christensen, both of Thornton, Colo.; and nine grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Sheridan VAMC hospice room or other programs that help elderly or disabled veterans.

Morris Dixon

Morris Dixon, 83, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan VAMC hospice room or any programs that benefit elderly or disabled veterans.

 

Paula King Duren

Paula King Duren, 72, of Buffalo, died Friday, Dec. 12, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Russ Murphy officiating. A reception will be in Onderdonk Hall immediately following the services. Burial is private, and arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Born Dec. 27, 1935, in Buffalo to John and Lucille King, she grew up and attended school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1953. After high school she attended nursing school in Chicago. She was a certified flight attendant and worked several years for Flying Tigers Airline out of Long Beach, Calif. She worked as a nurse at American Military Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany, where she met and married Thomas Duren in 1964. The couple lived in Buffalo for a few years and in 1967 moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1968 they moved to Long Beach, where she also worked as a nurse. In 1970 they moved back to Colorado Springs, where she continued nursing. They divorced in 1975. In 1985 she retired from nursing and earned a real estate license. She sold real estate in Colorado Springs until she retired in 2003. In 2005 she moved to Buffalo, where she continued to live until her death. She enjoyed painting, weaving, and the outdoors, especially hiking in the mountains. Two brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Michael King Duren and Patrick King Duren, both of Colorado Springs, and Alexander King Duren of Buffalo; a brother, John King of Cedar City, Utah; two grandchildren; two nieces; and several nephews. Memorials may benefit Johnson County Library in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Donald L. Clabaugh

Donald L. Clabaugh, 86, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Kane funeral Home with Chaplain Ed Diller officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Oct. 1, 1922, in Harrington, Neb., he married Betty Norskog on Sept. 3, 1947. Mr. Clabaugh served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga during World War II and was a Sheridan VA Medical Center fireman for many years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Darlene; and a grandson, Travis. Survivors include three children, Bruce Clabaugh of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Rob Clabaugh of Big Horn, and Rick Clabaugh of Marana, Ariz.; two siblings, Garnet Clabaugh of Green Valley, Ariz., and Dick Clabaugh of Powell; and two grandchildren. Kameron Reichert

Kameron Reichert, 17, of Dayton, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his home. A celebration of life will be 6 p.m. Wednesday at Tongue River High School with Pastor Tony Forman officiating. Those attending are asked to wear Green Bay Packers, Tongue River Eagles or green attire in honor of his favorite teams. Born Jan. 18, 1991, in Sheridan to Craig and Cara Reichert, he was a junior at Tongue River High School. He played football since fifth grade and recently lettered. He enjoyed time with his friends, driving around in his car, and spending money. He also enjoyed lifting weights after school, music, going to concerts and was a self-proclaimed video game champion. He was known as generous and good-natured with a great sense of humor. He spoke highly of his Tongue River teachers including Sukey Ross, Tim Maze, Rachel Schroder, Michele Nielsen, Levi Gorzalka, and coach Rick Gradwahl. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Dixie Gudmunson of Sundance. Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kassidy of Dayton; four grandparents, Chris and Donna Reichert of Billings, Betty Reichert of Dayton, and Wayne Gudmunson of New Rockford, N.D.; four uncles; four aunts; and nine cousins. Memorials may benefit Tongue River High School for a bench in his memory, or Dayton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Frank Lobach

Former City Councilman and longtime teacher Frank Lobach, 74, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry and Sheridan Elks Lodge officers officiating. Inurnment will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception will follow the service at Sheridan Elks Lodge, 45 W. Brundage St. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Dec. 16, 1933, in Florence, Colo., to Edwin Frederick and Eunice Council (Galbraith) Lobach, he moved at age 2 with his family to Denver, where he attended school. Following high school, he attended four years at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D., graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education. He spent two years in the Army as a physician's assistant. Mr. Lobach married Jean Alishouse on Dec. 26, 1956, in Adams City, Colo. He taught four years in Eads, Colo., where he was in charge of sixth- through 12th-grade vocal music as well as coaching football, basketball and track. The family moved to St. Xavier, Mont., where he taught fifth- through eighth-grade English, spelling, reading and vocal music. In 1965 the family moved to Sheridan, where he spent 23 years as a junior high vocal music teacher and assistant coach. In 1969 he completed his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Wyoming. He retired from teaching in 1988. He was involved in many Sheridan area projects including chairman of the City and County Joint Powers Board on the “Saving the Inn” project. He served as a city councilman for 22 years, five of them as City Council president. As a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, his duties included serving on the Veterans Administration committee, scholarship committee and setting up memorial services. He was exalted ruler when Sheridan’s Ritual Team won the North District at state, and he continued to coach the Ritual Team for five more years. Through the lodge, he served every chair except chaplain and was exalted ruler twice. He also was a grand lodge past district deputy and volunteered many hours of service at Sheridan VA Medical Center. He started the “Hides for Vets” program making available wheelchair gloves and raw leather to veterans nationally. The program won Sheridan Elks Lodge national recognition as it grew from collecting 175 hides to more than 2,500 hides at present. He was honored as “State Elk of the Year” in 2007-2008. A member of First United Methodist Church of Sheridan, he enjoyed singing in the church choir for more than 40 years and was choir director for five or six years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ed of Arvada, Colo., and Roger of Parkman; a daughter, Debbie French of Wright; a brother, James Lobach of Coatesville, Pa.; a sister, Donna Levin of Denver; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Frank B. King, 42, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, after battling diabetes. Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

 

Iva Hazel ‘Babe’ Peterson Kirkpatrick

Iva Hazel “Babe” Peterson Kirkpatrick, 101, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Orchard officiating. Interment will be 1 p.m. in Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Born Nov. 25, 1907, to Clara Timm Peterson and Nels Peterson in Rhame, N.D., she moved with her mother, son and daughter to Sheridan from Bay Horse, Mont., in 1948, when they sold their ranch. She purchased Weaver's Trading Post and 22 acres of attached land on South Coffeen Avenue. As long as she had land, she had animals. During the Korean War, she worked at the Box Factory in Buffalo making wooden munitions boxes. She also worked in a number of area restaurants including the old Fern Cafe and the B-Line Diner. She cooked and worked with the elderly at the Bengalia Nursing Home and Eventide and cooked at Tipi Lodge, Heritage Towers, the Branding Iron, Sheridan Senior Center and the halfway house. She volunteered for a number of years at Sheridan VA Medical Center, where she received recognition for her hours of service. She retired past her mid-80s and was known as the oldest full-time employee in Sheridan County. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was a noted horsewoman, riding in rodeo parades in Sheridan from the Bots Sots Stampede to the Sheridan County Rodeo. Horses were a lifelong passion, and she was known to say she “never met one I didn't like.” She enjoyed dancing and was known for her quick wit. She attended Family Life Center Foursquare Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence King of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Lawrence King of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Ivel Peterson of Sheridan; a son, Ellis Arnold Richards who died at birth; and a great-grandchild. Survivors include a son, C.A. “Sonny” Richards of Sheridan; a daughter, Mrs. Zane Cassel (Barbara Anna Oliver) of Evanston; 12 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen Oskins Schmidt

Helen Oskins Schmidt, 80, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, in Bullhead City, Ariz. She was mother of James Schmidt of Sheridan. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Monday at Newcomer Funeral Home in Casper. Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Monsignor James O’Neil and the Revs. Kevin Koch and Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will be at Highland Park Cemetery. Born Sept. 6, 1928, in Douglas, she moved with her family moved to Oshkosh, Neb., after the accidental death of her father. She graduated in 1946 from Garden County High School, where she was a majorette. She returned to Douglas and worked at the LaBonte Hotel. She married Harold A. Schmidt on April 6, 1947, at St. James Catholic Church. Mr. Schmidt’s work moved them from Douglas to Casper and Midwest. After briefly living at the Schmidt Brothers ranch north of Douglas and in Denver, the couple returned to Midwest until 1957, when they moved to Casper. Mrs. Schmidt and her youngest son lived at the family ranch southeast of Glendo from 1979 until 1984. There she enjoyed the return to the rugged life of a farmer and rancher until his graduation in 1983, when she returned to the family home in Casper. After Mr. Schmidt’s retirement, the couple began wintering in Quartzite, Ariz., then Bullhead City, Ariz., where they purchased a second home. She enjoyed putting $5 in a penny slot machine and winning, collecting antiques and was known to say she “never met an antique I didn't like.” Mrs. Schmidt was active in her parish, a Cub Scout den mother, and past president of St. Anthony’s Mother’s club. She chaperoned at national Catholic Youth Organization conventions, was past president of St. Anthony’s Council of Catholic Women, and was a founding member of Dishwashers and Cooks for the Knights of Columbus.
She worked as a secretary and receptionist at Old Faithful Life insurance for many years. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Oskins; a daughter, D’lorah; an adopted daughter, Betty Baker; and two grandsons. Survivors include her husband; a second son, Michael Schmidt of Casper; a daughter, Janet Edgecombe of Bullhead City; an adopted son, Homer Schmidt; a sister, Eleanor Rosander of Rapid City; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Jack D. Steel

Jack D. Steel, 77, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life is 3-5 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Kalif Shrine Center. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born April 30, 1931, to George and Allie (Roberts) Steel in Powersville, Mo., his family moved to Sheridan when he was 3 years old. He attended school in Sheridan. He married Rose Mary Bales on April 3, 1965. He worked as a semi driver for Boyd’s Supermarket for 20 years, then for the Bales Ranch. After leaving the ranch in 1973, he worked at Sheridan High School, then Sheridan College as a bus driver and motor pool supervisor until retiring in 1993. Mr. Steel enjoyed boating, fishing, camping, traveling in his motor home, gardening, horseback riding, and spending time with his grandchildren and cats. He was a member of First Christian Church, Big Horn Mountain Masonic Lodge 43, Scottish Rite, Kalif Shrine, Shrine Oriental Band, Kalif Buckskin Horse Patrol, Jesters 135 and was a life member of Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William A. Steel and George R. Steel; and a sister, Algeva McDowell. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Larry Moser of Dayton, John Moser of Baker, Mont., Jerry Moser of Billings, and Jay Steel of Moscow, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack H. Hollenbeck

Jack H. Hollenbeck, 85, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, in Billings Clinic. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Anderson officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born May 8, 1923, in Akron, N.Y., to Leon and Doris (Halderman) Hollenbeck, he grew up and graduated from high school in Akron. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Billie Hendricks on Nov. 25, 1943, in Mississippi. The couple moved to Akron, where he worked for Georgia Pacific as a cost accountant, retiring in 1973. They moved to Batesville, Miss., bought a farm, and raised soy beans and cattle. The couple moved to Torrington in 1978, then to Sheridan in 1981. Mr. Hollenbeck was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and telling stories. He was preceded in death by a son, John; a brother, Gordon; and a grandson, Justin. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brian of Powell and Joel of Sheridan; and two grandchildren.

Dickson Darrar

Dickson Darrar, 67, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Per his request, no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born July 18, 1941, in St. Mary’s, Idaho, he grew up and attended schools in St. Mary’s including St. Mary’s High School. He married Judy Divtorio in Kenai, Alaska, on July 30, 1982. He played in a traveling music band and for the past 10 years worked for Brad Waters. Mr. Darrar enjoyed fishing and spending time on his boat. He was preceded in death by a brother and a son. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cindy Hoch of Busby, Mont.; a son, David of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; a stepsister, Gloria Buyacich; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Bill ‘Rusty’ Solley

Bill “Rusty” Solley, 72, of Buffalo, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at his home. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. A celebration of life by family and friends will be at the American Legion Hall immediately following the service. Born April 12, 1936, in Rising Star, Texas, to Felix and Grace Solley, he grew up and received most of his education in Fresno, Calif., graduating from Fresno High School in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1961 and returned to California, where he worked at various jobs. Mr. Solley moved to Buffalo in 1976. He played music in bands, worked as a bartender at the 21 Club, managed the bar at the Crossroads Inn, and later built J.R.’s Supper Club, which he owned and operated for several years. He worked at the airport in Casper for a short time, returning to Buffalo, where he purchased the 21 Club in 1986 and operated it until 1993. He married Judith Skurok Hamer on Feb. 4, 1994, in Buffalo. Mr. Solley continued to play music, cooked at the Stagecoach, the Ladore, Chaps Restaurant, and operated the liquor store at Plaza Truck Stop until retirement in 2005. He enjoyed playing music and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Solley Jr. of Parker, Colo.; eight daughters, Kimerley Roope and Tammy Almgren, both of Fresno, Vicki Coscino of Las Vegas, Cathy Hickel of Casper, Tammy Hatcher, Deborah Jenkins and Lynn Holliday, all of Buffalo, and Kristy Cunningham of Sheridan; one brother, Albert Myers of Fresno; two sisters, Genevieve Martin of Fresno and Pansy Solley of California; 26 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Kenneth E. Nelson

Kenneth E. Nelson, 33, Sheridan, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Private graveside service will be Wednesday with Bruce Black officiating. Friends are invited to a reception at noon Wednesday at the Church of Christ. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Dec. 15, 1974, in Sheridan to Don and LaVonne (Gentz) Nelson, he grew up in Sheridan and graduated from high school here in 1993. Mr. Nelson worked for several businesses including Domino’s Pizza, Coast to Coast, and SL Tire Co. He enjoyed the mountains, fishing, playing cribbage and loved his cat, Opie. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Sheridan and a brother, Chris, of Rapid City. Morris P. ‘Red’ Opsahl

Morris P. “Red” Opsahl, 89, of Dayton, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. A gathering of friends and family will be noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in Dayton Community Church fellowship hall. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born May 6, 1919, in Tampico, Mont., to Hans and Julia (Moen) Opsahl, he grew up and attended school in Tampico and worked construction with his father. In June 1938 he married Mercedes Humphries. Mr. Opsahl enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving in France and Germany. He was wounded in action. After the war, he moved to northern Montana, where he again worked with his father in construction and as a fireman on a steam locomotive. He later was construction foreman on the Hungry Horse Dam in Libby, Mont. In the early 1960s, he divorced and moved to Dayton, where he raised his family and supervised construction of Tongue River High School. He married Edith Pfau in November 1965. He owned and operated Opsahl Construction until he retired. Mr. Opsahl enjoyed music and played guitar in his own dance band. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Joyce Ray of Denver, Dawn Maedche of Dayton, and Linda Aksamit of Ranchester; four stepchildren, Tom Pfau, Judy Roadifer, Becky Paustian and Shirley Bethurem; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Alberta Wattenberg

Alberta Wattenberg, 77 of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Congregational Church. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Wattenberg was born in Frankfort, Ind., March 21, 1931, to Webster and Esther Hall. She married Robert “Bob” Wattenberg on June 17, 1950, in Bexar, Texas. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, crocheting, cooking, working puzzles and collecting owls. She was known as a happy person who made friends easily. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter. Survivors include daughters Bonnie Reed of Sheridan and Paula Harding of Greeley, Colo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Marian F. Yingling

Marian F. Yingling, 75, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Nov. 13, 1933, in Spearfish, S.D., to Frank Willey and Frances (Sisson) Willey, she graduated from Buffalo High School and married Dale Connolly; they had four children together before divorcing. She later married Richard Yingling in Casper. Mrs. Yingling worked as a waitress for many years, and one of her fondest memories was waiting on John Wayne on his birthday while he was filming “Hell Fighters” in Casper. She was known for her sparkling personality and a smile that made people feel good. She enjoyed family birthdays, barbecues and holidays that included whipped cream fights, bowling, sewing, music, reading, and people. She was preceded in death by her second husband; a brother, Jim Willey; and sisters Joanne Svalina and Norma Brown. Survivors include her children, Roger Connolly and Jack Connolly of Gillette and Judy Shepard and Susan Howell of Sheridan; two sisters, Betty Gene Trebelcock of Buffalo and Linda Reed of San Antonio; and four grandchildren. Dustin Jay ‘Putz’ Farman

Dustin Jay “Putz” Farman, 23, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Interment of cremains will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born Aug. 28, 1985, to Dane Farman and Brenda Miech, he attended Meadowlark Elementary School, Sheridan Junior High School and Sheridan High School, graduating from Fort Mackenzie High School in 2003. He was a 2006 graduate of the Motorcycle Mechanics Tech School in Phoenix with special emphasis in recreational vehicles. He was employed at Hi Tech Transmission in Sheridan at the time of his death. He enjoyed all motorcycle and motocross activities and was known as a daredevil. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and hunting in the mountains, snowmachining, snowboarding, bowling, playing pool, swimming, jumping off the cliffs at Tongue River Reservoir, and spending time with his dog, friends and family, and especially with his younger brother, Cody. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, J.E. and Eileen Farman; and an aunt, JoAnne Farman. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ronni Miech of Sheridan; his father and stepmother, Cheryl Farman of Sheridan; a brother, Cody Miech of Sheridan; a sister, Amber Thomas of Sheridan; two stepsisters, Sarah and Caitlyn Steil, both of Sheridan; grandparents John and Wendy Norskog of Billings; three uncles; a niece; and numerous cousins. David Lee Norwood

David Lee Norwood, 60, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at his home in Sheridan. He was born Oct. 8, 1948, in Sheridan to Norman “Slim” and Audrey (Phillips) Norwood. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his parents of Sheridan; a son, Brett of Sheridan; two brothers, Duane and Don; and a sister, Gayle. A private gathering of family and friends will be later. Holland C.‘Mac’ McHenry

Holland C. “Mac” McHenry, 75, Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Billings Deaconess Clinic. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be later. Born July 1, 1933, on the family’s Campbell County homestead near Savageton to Cliff and Laura McHenry, he was educated in and near Gillette, graduating from Campbell County High School in 1951. He married Nola Beth Geer in Sheridan on Oct. 1, 1951. Mr. McHenry was self-employed with Mac’s Delivery, which later became Mac’s Moving and Storage, an agent for United Van Lines. Although retired in 1998, he continued to drive a mail truck for L&W Transfer between Sheridan and Moorcroft. He served in the Wyoming National Guard from 1955-1963 and was honorably discharged. Mr. McHenry enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, and saddle and draft horses. He was known as a mentor to all. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bryan C. McHenry of Huntsville, Texas, and Hadd M. McHenry of Sheridan; and a brother, Timothy McHenry of Worland. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tracy Richie of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Hollie Braunschweig of Jefferson City, Mo.; two brothers, Charles C. McHenry of Billings and Kenneth L. Leland Anthony Salas Jr.

Leland Anthony Salas Jr., 43, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, in Billings after a brief illness, according to family. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Assembly of God Church in Sheridan. Born Aug. 25, 1965, to Leland Anthony Salas Sr. and Florene Aikens in Reno, Nev., he married his wife, Greta, on Jan. 31, 1997, in Sheridan. He enjoyed working on computers, fishing, and loved animals. He spent the last seven years repairing and consulting on computer programs and had his own business, Salas System Support in Sheridan and Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Beata Kamran, and his stepfather, Tom Tarver. Survivors include his wife; his parents; a stepson, Benjamin Kamran; a sister, Cheresa Eddington; a brother, Michael Repolgie; three step-grandchildren; a niece; two nephews; and numerous aunts and uncles.

 

Bernie Schilling

Bernie Schilling, 91, of Buffalo, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, in Buffalo. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Born April 18, 1917, in Hollidaysburg, Pa., to John and Esther Schilling, he moved as a young boy to Monessen, Pa., where he grew up and graduated from Monessen High School in 1935. After high school he worked at various jobs until he joined the Army Air Corps, serving during World War II in North Africa and the Mediterranean. After military service he returned to Pennsylvania and in 1946 moved to Buffalo. He worked as a logger for many years in Johnson County and was a part-time prospector. After retiring, he continued to live in Buffalo. He enjoyed the mountains and hunting and was a rock collector and amateur geologist. He was past member of the Eagles Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers. Survivors include a nephew, a niece, a great-nephew and three great-nieces. Memorials may benefit the VFW in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Paul Joe Ogg

Paul Joe Ogg, 63, Longmont, Colo., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Longmont United Hospital following an extended illness. He was brother of Max Ogg and the Rev. Thomas Ogg, both of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. A second Mass was celebrated today at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland with burial there in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Born Aug. 9, 1945, in Worland to George Harper Ogg and Lena (Salzman) Ogg, he grew up working on the family farm outside Worland. He graduated in 1964 from Worland High School, where he was active in FFA, participating in judging contests for both steers and hogs. He was also on the wrestling team, going to the state meet all four years and winning individual state championships both his junior and senior years. He attended the University of Wyoming, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968 in agronomy and a master's degree in 1970 in weed science. Mr. Ogg went to work for American Cyanamid immediately following college and worked 33 years in the company’s research area, continuing as a consultant at the time of his death.
He received numerous awards in his field and served on various boards including Western Society of Weed Science, serving as president and being named outstanding Weed Scientist for the same organization. He also was a Fellow for the Western Society and North Central Weed Science Society and served on the board of National Society of Weed Science. He traveled to all 50 states and to more than a dozen countries overseas. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cynthia Ann Ogg, in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Lea Ogg; a son, Gerald Harper Ogg of Castle Rock, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Debra Schoen of Brighton, Colo.; a stepson, Bob McLaughlin of Monterey, Calif.; two additional brothers, Kenneth Ogg of Worland and Bill Ogg of Great Falls, Mont.; one granddaughter; and three step-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Leukemia Society of America, 621 17th St., Denver, CO 80293. Howe Mortuary of Longmont and Veile Mortuary of Worland are assisting with arrangements.

 

Birdeen Legerski

Birdeen Legerski, 90, Sheridan, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating, with burial in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Sept. 23, 1918, in Sheridan to James N. “Nick” and Goldie (McDermott) Weigand, she moved at age 6 months with her family to a homestead near Clearmont and graduated from Clearmont High School in 1935. She worked for Mountain Bell from 1940 to 1980, starting as a service representative. She married Joseph William “Smokey” Legerski on April 21, 1946. Mrs. Legerski was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, Sheridan Women’s Club, Telephone Pioneers, AARP, Council of Catholic Women, and Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed travel, cards, crafts, and her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Adeline Worden. Survivors include a son, Richard, of Spokane, Wash., and two granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Holy Name Catholic School, 260 E.
