Magdelena Margaret Sathren, 85, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Interment will be in Rapid City. Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Marie Haigh

Marie Haigh, 69, of Sheridan, formerly of Seattle, died Friday, March 1, 2002, in Big Horn. Arrangements are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Shirley Garland

Shirley J. Garland, 55, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Lucas officiating. Committal will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Ms. Garland was born April 3, 1946, in Sheridan to Leo and Norma (Grueb) Garland. She graduated from Big Horn schools and attended business school in Denver for one year. She returned to Sheridan and worked for the XL Motel as a housekeeper for many years. She helped her family take care of her mother for five years, then baby-sat for her son and daughter-in-law and took care of her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Joanne. Survivors include her son, Cecil of Sheridan; a brother, Virgil of Lewiston, Idaho; a sister, Janet Catterall of Big Horn; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Foundation in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Edna Mae Hunnell

Edna Mae Hunnell, 91, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Fox officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Hunnell was born Dec. 26, 1910, in Becker, Minn., to John and Anna (Kester) Bordeaux. Following school, she married Roy Hunnell in Sheridan in 1935. She enjoyed flower gardening, dancing, crocheting, cooking for her family, and painting tablecloths. Mrs. Hunnell was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, and three brothers, Edward Bordeaux and Alex Bordeaux, both of Sheridan, and Jack Bordeaux of Escondido, Calif. Survivors include four brothers, William “Bud” Bordeaux of Las Vegas, Frank and Jim Bordeaux, both of Sheridan, and Walter Bordeaux of Long Beach, Calif.; four sisters, Ruth Scherry of Sheridan, Margaret Pearson of Seattle, Dorothy Furrow of Kalispell, Mont., and Barbara Day of Green Valley, Ariz.; 31 nephews and nieces; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Memorials are suggested to the Elks Cemetery Fund in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

David Balagna

BUFFALO — David H. Balagna, 83, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at his home. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Sunday and 8-9 a.m. Monday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Latter-day Saints church in Buffalo with Bishop Sean Durrant officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Ronald Wood

GILLETTE — Former Sheridan resident Ronald C. “Woody” Wood, 65, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Rob Sorrow officiating. An additional service will be Monday at Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Wood was born Dec. 1. 1936, in Casper to Andrew and Bertha (Thayer) Wood. The family moved to Sheridan when he was a child. He attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1955 graduate of Sheridan High School. He entered the U.S. Army and served three years, stationed in Germany. He returned to Sheridan and was a truck driver. He later moved to Seattle for a short time before returning to Wyoming to work in oil fields and construction for Peter Kiewit. He also operated a small engine repair shop in California, then, with his wife, Mary Etta, started Wood Trucking in Upton. They moved to Gillette in 1973. He belonged to American Legion and Elks. Survivors include his wife of Gillette; two daughters, Patricia R. Murphy of North Carolina and Tracy A. Mengel of Virginia; two brothers; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Jean Rand

CHEYENNE — Former Sheridan area resident Jean Adams Rand, 91, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Mountain Towers Nursing Home in Cheyenne. Cremation has taken place at Schrader’s Sunset Park Crematory. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at Schrader’s Chapel with the Rev. “Skip” Reeves officiating. A grave marker will be placed in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Mrs. Rand was born May 26, 1910, in Sheridan to John J. and Cora Kelson Adams. She was a 1928 graduate of Sheridan High School and received a teaching diploma from the University of Wyoming. She taught school in South Dakota, Ranchester, Kaycee and Wheatland. She married Ralph R. Rand June 4, 1938, in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sheridan. They made their home in Cheyenne. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and by a brother, Archibald, and a sister, Helen Laisy. Survivors include a son, Charles B. of Cheyenne; a daughter, Sharon Collier of Cheyenne; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels.

Naomi J. Adleman

Sheridan native Naomi Johns Adleman, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, in Spokane, Wash., where she resided the past 27 years. She was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Sheridan. Survivors include a sister, Janice Svoboda of Spokane, and a nephew. Private services and burial were Friday at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements were with Hennessey Smith Funeral Home, Spokane.

Ronald C. Wood, 65, of Gillette, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Gifford officiating. Interment will be in the Elks section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Madge R. Terry

Madge R. Terry, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Terry was born March 16, 1916, in Rock Springs to Thomas and Victoria (Ramsay) McCormick. She married Frank D. Terry in Lander in 1936. They moved to Sheridan in 1946. She was a member of the Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, rockhounding, travel, reading, genealogy and the history of the West. She loved flowers and music. She was preceded in death by her husband and by two brothers, Herb and Clyde McCormick. Survivors include three sons, F. Duncan of Sheridan, Herbert of Everett, Wash., and Clifford of Story; a daughter, Martha Conley of Cheyenne; and 10 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital Pulmonary Rehab Program in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

G. Noel Turnbough

STORY — Gene Noel Turnbough, 76, of Story died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at his residence. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Graveside services will follow. Mr. Turnbough was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Steelville, Mo., to Mont and Clara Turnbough. The family moved to Gillette when he was 14 years old. He quit school and started herding sheep. He joined the U.S. Army at 19 and served in post-World War II Japan. After the service, he returned to Gillette, where he married Patricia McIntire. He worked for the CB&Q Railroad as a section worker from 1955 until he retired in 1986. The family moved to Story in the early 1980s. He was an avid sportsman and maintained a collection of guns and knives. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998 and by a stepbrother and two stepsisters. Survivors include a brother, Norman of Broadus, Mont.; a sister, Beverly Hartley of Napa, Calif.; two stepbrothers, Wanye Goerke of Gillette and Virgil Goerke of Bozeman, Mont.; and a stepsister, Hazel Sabotka of Mills.

Linda Schweitzer

BILLINGS — Linda (Hybner) Schweitzer, 41, of Billings died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at her parents’ farmhouse north of Rudyard, Mont., apparently of complications from diabetes. She was sister of Roger Hybner of Sheridan. Memorial services were last week in Billings and in Hingham, Mont. Arrangements were with Rockman Funeral Home in Chester, Mont. Mrs. Schweitzer was born Oct. 24, 1960, in Havre, Mont., to Jerry and Mary Lois (Stanberry) Hybner. She was a 1983 graduate of the University of Montana and was a supervisor for the Montana Department of Health and Human Services. She married Tony Schweitzer July 17, 1993, in Hingham. Memorials may be made to the Billings Food Bank, the Billings Homeless Shelter for Men or the Montana Diabetes Association (for research).

Gene Noel Turnbough, 76, Story, died of natural causes Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at his home, according to Sheridan County Coroner P.J. Kane. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Alexander Heide

Alexander R. Heide, 79, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. Cremation will follow, with interment of cremains later in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Heide was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Alexander and Helen (Stearns) Heide. The family came to Sheridan in the late 1930s, and Mr. Heide worked on ranches until he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned to Sheridan and married Wilma “Bonnie” Smith June 17, 1946. They moved to Indiana where he worked as a water superintendent for the city of Angola. He retired in 1985, and they returned to Sheridan. He was a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond; a half-brother, David; and half-sisters Delores and Joyce. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a son, Richard of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Gayle Shattuck of Portland, Kathleen Heide of Ubly, Mich., and Kris Kober of Billings; two half-brothers, Ed of Sheridan and Joe of Lund, Nev.; a half-sister, Mary Ann McFarlane of Casper; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Theodore Jay Swartz

Former Sheridan resident Theodore Jay Swartz, 59, of East Wenatchee, Wash., died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at his home after a 10-month battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 24, 1943, in Gillette to Lee and Edythe Swartz. At age 2, he moved with his family to a dairy farm in Sheridan, where he attended high school and college. He worked summers on local farms and ranches and also for the U.S. Forest Service. He married Mary Katherine Schonberg in 1964. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a BS degree in agricultural engineering in 1967 and an MS degree in water resources in 1972. Mr. Swartz worked for Allis Chalmers in West Allis, Wis., and the Gleaner Combine Plant in Independence, Mo. He returned to the Forest Service as a civil engineer in 1972 and worked there ever since. He worked many years on the Medicine Bow National Forest in Laramie, the Black Hills National Forest in Spearfish, S.D., and the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest in Granby, Colo., before going to the Wenatchee National Forest in 1987. The Moses Lake Tanker Base was one of his most gratifying accomplishments. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, and boating in his younger years, but golfing was his ultimate love. He dedicated many hours to youth programs and was a mentor for hundreds of individuals. A brother, Robert Swartz, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife and two children, Kurtis Swartz of East Wenatchee and Krista Moreshead of Billings; a brother, James Swartz, of Grand Junction, Colo.; and a grandchild. Following a Saturday memorial in Washington, graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 Scholarship Fund, P.O. Jerry Merle Blakeman

Jerry Merle Blakeman, 89, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at his home in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be at a later date, arranged by Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Blakeman was born June 29, 1912, in Crook County to William and Edna (Holmes) Blakeman on a homestead close to Devils Tower. He attended schools in Crook County, graduating from the eighth grade in Sundance. He quit school to help support his family. He married Kathryn (Roadifer) Sipe June 17, 1937. In spring 1944, they moved to Sheridan and he began his 40-year career as a mechanic. He started at Hammer’s Garage, transferred to Valley Motors when it first opened, and after 25 years there, spent the last 14 years at Spot Garage with Kenny Hawkins. He retired at age 71. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Margaret Davis; brothers Gerald and Charles Blakeman; and a baby sister, Angela. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry of Sheridan; daughter Jean Holwell of Sheridan; three sisters, Anna Mae McWethy of Loveland, Colo., Edna “Toots” MacPherson of Palouse, Wash., and Daisy Dennis of Hulett; two brothers, Frank Blakeman of Sundance and Don Blakeman of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sheridan Senior Center, Hospice of the Big Horns, or Sheridan Cat and Dog Shelter in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Elmer W. Reisch

Elmer W. Reisch Sr., 91, Sheridan, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors. Mr. Reisch was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Turtle Lake, Wis., to John and Hazel (Brown) Reisch. His family later moved to Campbell County. After homesteading in Campbell County, he enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He returned to Wyoming and worked for Bondi Construction, Holly Sugar, Allen Fordyce, and Ike Fordyce until his retirement. He was a sheep shearer during the season, an occupation which he continued until he was 80. He married Inez Baker in 1945. Following her death, he married Rose Montegna in 1970. They resided in Sheridan since then. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed trapping , gardening, carpentry and working with 4-H members preparing sheep for county fairs. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Marvin. Survivors include his wife; a son, Elmer ‘Sonny’ Reisch Jr. of Sheridan; a daughter, Loree Price of Prescott, Wash.; two sisters, Norma Leis of Sheridan and Lucille Shorten of Joliet, Mont; a brother, Floyd Reisch of Anaconda, Mont.; four grandsons; and three great-granddaughters. Memorials are suggested to Sheridan County 4-H in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Virginia Kaster

Former Sheridan resident Virginia Rose Kaster, 75, of Douglas died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at her home of natural causes. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at Converse Funeral Chapel in Douglas. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Converse Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Merrill Lanker officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Elks Section, at a later date. Mrs. Kaster was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Winfield, Kan., to Claude and Sylvina M. (Short) Wheeler. She grew up in Hume, Mo., and graduated from Hume High School. She married Kenneth Kaster June 14, 1946, in Hume. She moved to Douglas in 1967, then to Sheridan in 1968, and lived here until 1993, when she retired and moved to Casper. She returned to Douglas in 1999. She was a member of the DOES, Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983 and by a son, Kenneth Robert Kaster Jr. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Duran of Sheridan and Karen Smart of Douglas; two sons, Kenneth and Robert, both of Douglas; a brother, Richard Montgomery of Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Alexander R. Heide, 79, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the VA Medical Center. The family will greet friends for viewing and visitation from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. Cremation will follow with interment of cremains later in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Barbara Strahl

BIG HORN — Barbara Strahl, 82, of Big Horn died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in her home. Vigil service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Strahl was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Gakowa, Yugoslavia, to Franz and Theresia (Novak) Gebert. She grew up and attended schools in Yugoslavia. She married Matthias Strahl there June 19, 1939. They immigrated to the United States in 1952 and lived in Chicago until 1984, when they retired and moved to Sheridan. They moved to Big Horn in 1994. Mrs. Strahl enjoyed gardening, baking, fishing, hiking and, in her younger years, bowling. She was preceded in death by two sons, Josef and Frank, and two brothers, Franz and Anton. Survivors include her husband and two daughters, Barbara DeFries and Erika Strahl, all of Big Horn; a brother, Martin Gebert of Germany; two sisters, Katherina Kornprobst of Germany and Maria Hoehener of Chicago; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gibb Barclay

Gibb Barclay, 82, of Lebanon, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo. He was father of Sheridan residents Larry and Gary Barclay. Masonic services and visitation are tonight in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Lebanon. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Veterans’ Park in Mount Rose Memorial Park with full military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4107. Mr. Barclay was born Dec. 11, 1919, near Lead Mine, Mo., to William Everett and Maude Alexander Barclay. He married Wretha Charlene Hightower Feb. 27, 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Florence Brisch; an infant son; brothers Guy, Rue and Charles; and two sisters, Truma and Anna Ruth. Survivors include his wife, Charlene of Lebanon; a daughter, Joan Holwell of Newcastle; another son, David of Lake Charles, La.; a brother, Glen of Lebanon; four sisters, Alta McCulloch, Alma Wilson and Velga Moore, all of Lebanon, and Alice Claxton of Eldon, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Patricia Kay Aman of Carson City, Nev., died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Waltons Chapel of the Valley in Carson City. Mrs. Aman and her family lived in Sheridan for several years before moving to Nevada. Survivors include her husband, Stanley of Carson City; three sons, Guy of Virginia, Tobb of Colorado and Rex of Texas; her father, Harry L. Wilson of Hardin, Mont.; a brother, Larry Wilson of Lodge Grass, Mont.; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Heart Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Elmer Reisch, 91, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Very Reverend Eugene Sullivan officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

BUFFALO — Frances Haines, 85, of Buffalo died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Keith McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Gladys Bosley

Gladys Irene Bosley, 88, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Bosley was born Feb. 16, 1914, in 7 Mile, Ohio, to Harry and Elizabeth Young. She moved to Wyoming in 1928 and married Roy L. Bosley Aug. 22, 1932, in Hardin, Mont. She worked as a cook on the Railroad Bridge Gang for many years. She enjoyed cooking and people and loved her animals. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Doris Norwood. Survivors include two sisters, Muriel Phillips of Billings and Harriet “Shug” Hartman of Hamilton, Ohio; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Lucina Ross

Lucina “Billie” Million (Schrater) Ross, 80, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Portland, Ore., from complications following surgery. Lloyd Deeds

Lloyd Deeds, 76, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center following a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at First Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Deeds was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Grand Island, Neb., to Frank A. and Violet (Kelly) Deeds. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 89th Division in World War II in an intelligence unit in Europe. He was captured behind enemy lines in France and placed in a German prisoner of war camp in Czechoslovakia. He married Wilma Hahle of Hampton, Neb., Aug. 10, 1947. They moved to Sheridan in 1955. He worked for the Railway Mail Service, later transferring to the U.S. Postal Service where he served for 30 years. He was the local and state president of the American Postal Workers Union and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed the Wyoming outdoors and spent most of his time in the mountains, hunting and fishing around Sheridan. He was a Little League baseball coach for several years when his sons were growing up. He enjoyed boating and riding motorcycles, snowmobiles and four-wheelers. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline, and brothers Henry and Marion. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; four sons, Larry and Lynn, both of Sheridan, Lloyd Jr. of Hanford, Calif., and Terry of Tahlequah, Okla.; two brothers, Robert of El Dorado, Ark., and Roger of Cozad, Neb.; four sisters, Dorothy Brown of Tempe, Ariz., Shirley Buehrer and Janice Callan, both of Hastings, Neb., and Carol Karash of Bee, Neb.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center.

Nathan Lee Stewart, 23, of Brookings, S.D., died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D, of injuries received in an automobile accident. He grew up on the family farm north of Chamberlain, S.D. He graduated from Chamberlain High School with honors and moved to Brookings, S.D., where he worked for Rupp Masonry. He enjoyed fishing and waterskiing. He was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. Franklin Holbrook

Franklin Dwain “Doc” Holbrook, 75, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Anselmo officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Holbrook was born June 11, 1926, in Sheridan to Dr. B.F. and Phila (Wilson) Holbrook. The family moved to Thermopolis and Worland, but returned to Sheridan in 1934. Mr. Holbrook attended Linden School and was a 1944 graduate of Sheridan High School, where he was a champion in pingpong and horseshoes, played football and was in the Latin Club and National Honor Society. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in Europe, where he was wounded by a sniper in France in March 1945. He attended the University of Berne, Switzerland, a short time before returning home, where he was discharged in May 1946. He was a 1951 graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minneapolis and practiced in Worland until 1956, when he moved to Casper. He married Joanne Hoveland in 1968 in Casper. He returned to Sheridan in June 1999. He held 13 state bowling titles and was a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame. He belonged to the Wyoming and American chiropractic associations and Our Father’s House/Open Bible Church in Sheridan. He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Verden, and a brother, Dale. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gus and John, both of Casper; three sisters, Myra Collins and Mereen Klein, both of Phoenix, and Marva Nye of Chadron, Neb.; and five grandsons. George Mitchell

Former Sheridan County resident George C. Mitchell, 67, of Gillette died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Mitchell was born May 17, 1934, in Miles City, Mont., to Earl and Imogene Mitchell. He attended schools in Wyoming and Montana and was a 1952 graduate of high school in Custer, Mont. He worked for the Padlock and Earl Simpson ranches in Sheridan. He married Christina Werner of Spotted Horse in 1958. They lived in Broadus, Mont., where he worked for A.J. Bone Trucking, then moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he worked in the copper mines. They moved to Gillette in 1967 and he worked for Stone Construction, Paul’s Truck and Tractor, Bob Deaver Construction and Amax Coal Co. until 1994, when he retired. He was a charter member of Gillette Elks Lodge and later transferred his membership to Sheridan Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by a son. Survivors include his wife of Gillette; two sons, George Mitchell of Gillette and Randy Reeves of Wright; three daughters, Lori Horsley of Gillette, Kim Roderick of Bozeman, Mont., and Diane Barbero of Boyes, Mont.; his mother of Sheridan; three brothers, Parke of Concord, Calif., Dallas of Suisun, Calif., and Carsie of Big Horn, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. F. Duane Mahoney

Former Sheridan resident F. Duane Mahoney, 63, of Casper died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his home of complications from systemic lupus and hemacromatosis. Memorial services were 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at First Assembly of God Church in Casper with Pastor A.G. Miller officiating. Bustard’s Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mahoney was born Aug. 28, 1938, in Buffalo to Williams “Woodson” and Frances Mae (Schrater) Mahoney. He was a 1956 graduate of Johnson County High School. He moved to Casper after graduation and married Janice Lee Spencer there July 5, 1959. They moved to Sheridan in 1960, and he worked for Bunny Bread, Poll Motor, Eddy’s Bread and Holly Sugar. The family returned to Casper in 1970. He worked with his in-laws at Casper Adjustment Service before purchasing Spence Auto Recovery/American Lenders Service Co. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church and the Friday noon TIE Club, and helped establish International Credit Counseling in Casper. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Annette DuBridge of Comstock Park, Mich.; two sons, Spencer and Kip, both of Casper; his mother of Buffalo; three brothers, Bob of Buffalo, Bryan of Elko, Nev., and Chad of Ogden, Utah; a sister, Betty Hobbs of Evansville; and four grandsons.

Survivors include two other daughters in Texas and a son in Idaho.

Gene Sturlin

BUFFALO — Gene Francis Sturlin, 78, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Buffalo. He is father of Gene Sturlin of Buffalo, who works for Radio Station KROE in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place in Billings. A memorial service was Saturday in Buffalo at the American Legion. Memorial services will be in Jackson Hole in May. Interment will be at the Elliot Cemetery in Wilson. Arrangements were with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Sturlin was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Portland, Ore., to Forest Sturlin and Joan Anderson Sturlin Pithoud. He later lived in Wilson. He attended high school in Jackson Hole. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 163rd Combat Engineers in the Aleutian Islands, Honolulu, the Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged in March 1946. He married Alvira Johnston in June 1949 in Jackson Hole, and he worked for a cold-storage plant there 30 years. He was a member of Elks 1713 in Jackson, American Legion Post 13 in Buffalo, the Jackson Hole Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4274 in Jackson. He and his wife moved to the Buffalo area in 1994. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Pithoud.
Survivors include his wife and two other children, Gloria Edwards and Kim Sturlin, all of Jackson Hole; a brother, Ross Sturlin, and sister, Georgine Spach, both of Tampa, Fla.; and five grandchildren. She grew up in Mississippi, Canada and Denver, where she worked for Texaco. She married Clinton Eubank in Denver and they lived there and in Sheridan, Casper and Cheyenne before moving to California in 1952. She worked in procurement and as a bookkeeper for the U.S. Civil Service until retirement. The Eubanks returned to Sheridan in 1991 to be near their daughter. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Daughters of the Nile, Beauceant and a 50-year member of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000 and by two brothers, a sister and her son, Richard. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Hurst of Sheridan; two brothers, Ansel Brown of El Paso, Texas, and Neil Brown of Houston; a sister, Ida Mae Tally of Boulder, Colo.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Anna Suel, 91, Wyarno, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, the Rev. Vena Allred

Vena M. Allred, 92, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Mrs. Allred was born April 30, 1909, in Larned, Kan., to David and Jennie May (Smeltzer) Fox. The family moved to a homestead near Moorcroft in 1917. Mrs. Allred attended Dillinger country school and graduated from Moorcroft High School. The family moved to Sheridan in 1926, and she worked at the Palace Cafe. She moved to California in 1943. She married Fred “Jerry” Allred in 1965 in San Jose, Calif. They returned to Sheridan, where she enjoyed the Big Horn Mountains and her cabin. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972 and by brothers Dale and Glenn and sisters Erma, Ora and Hazel. Survivors include four stepdaughters, Margaret Vurgos, Winifred Vierra, Sandra Bonessa and Evelyn Robinson, all of California; and a brother, Parke Fox of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St.

Jennie Romero

Jennie Ida Romero, 88, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Rosary services will be 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Guernsey. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Cousineau officiating. Interment of cremains will be in Hartville Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home handled local arrangements. Mrs. Romero was born May 22, 1913, in Chacon, N.M., to Daniel and Bersaba (Garcia) Romero. She married Leandro Romero after completing school. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, bingo and card playing and was a foster grandparent for the state of California for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Elina Romero; and a sister, Ruth Trujillo. Survivors include four sons, Leandro J. of Phoenix, Daniel E. of Sheridan, Francis J. of Worland and Fred P. of Douglas; a brother, Ralph Romero of Patterson, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren. BUFFALO — Gene F. Sturlin Sr., 78, of Buffalo died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, in Johnson County Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan.

Martha Blansett

Martha Elizabeth Blansett, 87, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Gifford officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Blansett was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Howard County, Mo., to Thomas E. and Effie Robb. She was a 1932 graduate of Higbee (Mo.) High School and was a member of the high school girls’ basketball team. She married James Bert Blansett Dec. 24, 1938, in Missouri. They moved to Sheridan. She was a homemaker and was active in First Baptist Church. Mr. Blansett died in 1996. Survivors include a son, James Thomas Blansett of Sheridan; three daughters, Linda Grosso and Pat Tomsovic, both of Sheridan, and Leta Kobielusz of Rozet; a brother, Thomas E. Robb, and sister, Leta Frances Morrison, both of Moberly, Mo.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Mercy & Grace Ministries, P.O. James Hebbert

BUFFALO — Former Sheridan resident James R. “Jim” Hebbert, 79, of Buffalo died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Sheridan. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Fellowship Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Graveside committal services will follow, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in charge of military graveside rites. Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo is handling arrangements. Mr. Hebbert was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Sheridan County to William and Alma Hebbert. He was a 1941 graduate of Sheridan High School, then joined the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later moved to California and married Wynes Donald Sept. 15, 1955, in Santa Barbara, Calif. They moved to Sheridan in 1970 and owned and operated Gnomes Home Ceramic Studio until 1976, when they moved to Carson, Calif., to manage mobile home parks. They returned to Wyoming in 1980, and he worked for the Casper School District. In 1982, the family moved to Buffalo, where he was head of maintenance for Buffalo and Kaycee high schools until retiring in 1992. He spent the last several years working for City Liquor in Buffalo. He was a past member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge and an avid bowler. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Bill, and a sister, Alice Reed. Survivors include his wife of Buffalo; two daughters, Dannie Cangiamilla of Sheridan and Sandi Davis of Ventura, Calif.; a son, Tim, of Casper; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. David Fender

David W. Fender, 49, of Los Angeles died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in Los Angeles after being injured in a motorcycle accident. He was brother of Cheryl Ackerley, a former longtime Sheridan resident now living in Cheyenne. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church in Casper. Mr. Fender was born April 17, 1952, in Montrose, Colo., to Esther L. and Ernest E. Fender. Other survivors include his parents of Casper; and three brothers, Ernest Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., Edwin B. of Casper and Norman L. of Wright.

Millie Foley

Former Sheridan resident Millie Foley, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in San Jose, Calif. Private services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister, Calif., with the Rev. John Amelio of Glad Tidings Church officiating. Interment will be in the San Juan District Cemetery in San Juan Bautista. Mrs. Foley was born Oct. 13, 1910, in Nebraska to Albert and Elsie Young. The family came to Sheridan when she was a child, and she grew up and was educated here. She had lived in San Jose since 1949 except for 12 years in San Juan Bautista in the 1980s. She was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Michaels. Survivors include her children, Patricia Griffin of Oregon, Donald of Scotts Valley, Calif., David of Aromas, Calif., and Charles of Discovery Bay, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
