Lela M. Christensen

BUFFALO — Lela M. Christensen, 78, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, in Amie Holt Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Sunday and 8-9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery, with graveside services. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.

James F. Byrum Jr.

James F. “Jeff” Byrum Jr., 56, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. At his request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Byrum was born Aug. 12, 1947, in Corinth, Miss., to James F. and Annette (Nelson) Byrum. He grew up and attended schools in Memphis, Tenn. He graduated from high school in Memphis in 1965. He enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. He was honorably discharged from the Navy Reserve in 1972. He returned to Tennessee and went to work for the railroad. He later transferred to Sheridan. He worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 32 years and was an engineer at the time of his death. He married Marie Wright Dec. 13, 1996, in Sheridan. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother. Survivors include his wife; a son, Marshall of Kansas City, Mo.; four daughters, Melissa Shaffer of Austin, Texas, Michele Johnson and Kaelene Wright, both of Sheridan, and Cathy Wright of Fresno, Calif.; his mother of Memphis; a sister, Sandra Kelso of Byhalia, Miss.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Life Link of Sheridan County or Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

James Robert Rosenlund

James Robert Rosenlund, 78, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing and visitation will be 7 p.m. today at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with Joel Hendrickson and Rick Beld officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Rosenlund was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Brainerd, Minn., to Louis and Hulda (Niska) Rosenlund. He grew up in the Brainerd and Minneapolis area and graduated from high school in Minneapolis. He married Virginia Rose (Lipe) Redinger Dec. 28, 1945, in Shakopee, Minn. He worked as an upholsterer and taught upholstering until the family moved to Sheridan in 1975. He worked for Sickler Upholstery until 1994, when he retired. He was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. He enjoyed travel and spending time with friends and family. He was preceded in death by a son, Lewis, and two brothers, Fred and Gordon. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; four sons, Ronald and John, both of Battle Ground, Wash., and Perry and Wade, both of Sheridan; eight daughters, Rosemary Bruckelmyer of Duluth, Minn., Elaine Lindberg of Vancouver, Wash., Lora Tikka and Lucille Massie, both of Yacolt, Wash., Sara Miller and Gloria Kopman, both of Battle Ground, Greta Wicht of Sheridan and Jenny Blomquist of New Windsor, Md.; three sisters, Doris Sarkkinen of Battle Ground, Betty Lipe of Minneapolis and Hazel Hendrickson of Burnsville, Minn.; two brothers, Richard of Hancock, Mich., and John of Yacolt; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Viola A. Stuckert

BUFFALO — Viola A. Stuckert, 69, of Buffalo died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Glenn Wessell officiating. A viewing will precede the service. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Lucille Replogle Byers

Lucille Replogle Byers, 80, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Byers was born Sept. 8, 1923, in New Enterprise, Pa., to Karl and Ruth (Kagarice) Replogle. She grew up in Riddlesburg, Pa., and graduated from Broad Top Township High School in Defiance, Pa. She graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore in 1945. She married Robert Byers March 10, 1945, in Baltimore. They lived there until 1966, when they moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Byers worked as weekend relief nurse for Continental Can Co. and Lord Baltimore Press while in Baltimore. Here, she worked at Eventide of Sheridan for seven years before joining Sheridan VA Medical Center. She retired in 1985. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Christian Woman's Club. She enjoyed her family, friends at her church and the Senior Center, Bible study, reading, sewing, gardening, travel, hiking, cross-country skiing and square dancing. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Alan of Bellview, Neb., and Daniel of Douglas, Alaska; two daughters, Alice Baker of Big Horn and Mary Olsen of Hamilton, Mont.; a brother, Joe Replogle of Brookside, N.J.; a sister, Jean Clark of Chambersburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Senior Center Building Fund or Trinity Lutheran Church.

 

Ira Felz

Ira Felz, 70, of Clearmont died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. At his request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Felz was born Dec. 25, 1933, on the family ranch in Dawes County, Neb., to Ira Austin and Nona (Rivers) Felz. He graduated from high school and attended college three years. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in April 1952 and served until his honorable discharge in November 1956. He married Frances Logue Aug. 23, 1953, in Oelrichs, S.D. He worked as a rancher. He moved to Clearmont a year ago from Chadron, Neb. He was a member of the American Paint Horse Association and the Highland Cattle Association. He enjoyed ranching, Highland cattle, paint horses, spending time with his family, rope art, making earrings and other crafts and dancing, especially square dancing. He was preceded in death by a sister, Nona Jillson. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Rose Harris of Rapid City and Marilyn Tagart of Alliance, Neb.; four sons, Marvin of Clearmont, Howard and Hoss of Chadron, and Bruce of Three Forks, Mont.; three sisters, Lola Rathman and Mary Ann Mintken, both of Dalton, Neb., and Lora Miller of Ardmore, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Richard L. “Rick” Newman, 60, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Katie Lynn Forry

Katie Lynn Forry, infant daughter of Todd and Deby Forry of Laramie, was born and died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, in Ivinson Memorial Hospital of Laramie. She was granddaughter of Charles and Joyce Forry of Sheridan. Funeral services were Monday at First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Green Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were with Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home. Survivors include her parents; a brother, Shane Charles of Laramie; grandparents Carl Tut and Loretta Anderson of Spring, Texas; two great-grandmothers, Jessie White of Cody and Dorothy Wells of Elgin, N.D.; a great-great-grandfather, S.D. Taylor of Marysville, Wash.; and several aunts and uncles.

 

Linda Dee Stewart

Sheridan native Linda Dee (Reisch) Stewart, 54, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in Bozeman (Mont.) Deaconess Hospital after a short illness. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Mrs. Stewart was born April 7, 1949, in Sheridan to Floyd J. and Pearl E. (Whitford) Reisch. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1967. She worked in real estate before providing a day care in her home. She enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include her husband, David “Stew” Stewart of Belgrade, Mont.; a son, Rickey Loftice of Livingston, Mont.; a daughter, Renae Loftice of Anaconda, Mont.; her parents, of Anaconda; a sister, Sandy Kuhl of Reno, Nev.; a brother, Floyd Reisch of Anaconda; and four grandchildren. Richard Ray Gempler

Sheridan native Richard Ray “Dick” Gempler, 75, of Springfield, Ore., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, of congestive heart failure. A memorial gathering was Feb. 6 in the Springfield Moose Lodge. Arrangements were with Chapel of Memorials Funeral Home in Eugene, Ore. Mr. Gempler was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Sheridan to Ernest and Edith Taylor Gempler. He married Pauline Wittmer Dec. 10, 1949, in Billings and lived in Billings and Hillsboro, Mont., before moving to Santa Cruz, Calif. He moved to Springfield in 1990. He worked as an automotive mechanic. His interests included woodworking and restoring old cars. He belonged to Springfield Moose Lodge 1726, the Live Steam Engine Club in Oakland, Calif., and the Antique Automobile Club of America. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert. Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard of Mount Shasta, Calif.; a daughter, Jacalyn Farris of Springfield; a sister, Evelyn Roush of Sheridan; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Springfield Moose Lodge.

 

Velma F. Reeves

Former Sheridan resident Velma F. Reeves, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. Funeral services were Thursday in Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel in Douglas with the Rev. Ginny Maslo of the Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial was in Douglas Park Cemetery. Mrs. Reeves was born April 1, 1915, in Douglas to John Silas and Nettie (Fowler) Cowger. The family homesteaded north of Douglas. Mrs. Reeves later moved to Douglas, where she graduated from high school at age 16. She completed a normal school education and began teaching at age 19 in the rural areas of Converse County. She moved to Cleveland in 1943 to work in the war-production industry. She returned to Douglas in 1948 and worked as secretary of the Chevrolet dealership. She married Gerald Glenn Reeves July 27, 1961, in Buffalo. The couple operated a car dealership and gas station in Casper in the 1960s, then moved to Billings, where they worked in road construction. The couple also had Chevrolet dealerships in Harlowton and Broadus, Mont., and Mrs. Reeves worked as an accountant and tax consultant. The Reeveses moved to Sheridan in the early 1980s. They raised cattle on land south of Sheridan. Mr. Reeves died Aug. 21, 1998, and Mrs. Reeves moved to Douglas, then, after a year, to Casper. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Edwin, and two stepsons, Dick and Bill Reeves. Survivors include four nieces and nephews. Louis Poulos

Louis “Louie” Poulos, 85, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his residence. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Doolin officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Poulos was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Sheridan to Steve and Olga (Kamanos) Poulos. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1941 graduate of Sheridan High School, where he was involved in athletics. He joined the Army in 1941 and was trained as a radio operator. He served with the 137th Signal Radio Intelligence Co. One of the company's duties was to patrol the beaches along the Pacific. Mr. Poulos served in World War II and the Korean War where he was stationed on the Demilitarized Zone. He received the American Defense Service Medal, the American Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He joined the Wyoming Army National Guard when he returned to Sheridan, and he served until 1986, jointly affiliated with retired status with the Department of the Army. He received the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal at ceremonies in the drill hall of the National Guard Armory. He married Helen Kincaid April 11, 1948, in Sheridan. The couple bought the Eagle Shoe Shop in 1953 and operated it until 1993. Mr. Poulos also worked at the Sheridan VA Medical Center from 1972 until 1987, when he retired. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sheridan, the Gideon International Organization, the Sheridan Historical Society and R.E.A.C.T. He was an originator of the American Legion 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corps, helping design the uniform, and he worked on the street car project. He enjoyed attending community concerts, cooking and taking his family on picnics in the Big Horn Mountains. He enjoyed fishing in his younger years. He was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; two sons, Jerry Edward of Sheridan and Albert Jay of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three sisters, Frances Petrocich of Rock Springs, Helen Johnson of Sheridan and Mary Caprielian of California; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1100 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Louise M. Ley, 95, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Ley was born June 7, 1908, in David City, Neb., to William and Centina (Aden) Ihnen. She grew up in the David City and Rising City, Neb., area and graduated from Rising City High School. She married Marion C. Ley May 3, 1932, in David City. They moved to Sheridan in 1942. Mrs. Ley worked on the Antler Ranch as a nanny for Frank Tschirgi's daughters, Joan and Jeri. She later worked for Dr. Araas until she retired. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, Marvin of Dayton; a sister, Roseletta Garhan of Rising City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandsons. Leslie Jo Schwabauer

Leslie Jo Schwabauer, 43, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethesda Worship Center, 1082 E. Brundage Lane, Sheridan, with Pastor Scott Lee officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Mrs. Schwabauer was born June 23, 1960, in Bonners Ferry to Edward Raymond and Ann Elizabeth (Dickison) Winslow. She grew up and attended schools in Libby, Mont., and was a graduate of Libby High School. She attended college at Montana State University, the University of Montana and Casper College. She married Craig Hugh Schwabauer April 19, 2003, in Sheridan. She loved the outdoors and spending time in the mountains. She enjoyed music, dancing, reading, taking long walks, driving in the country and children. She enjoyed sunrises, sunsets and full moons. She was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a brother, Tim Winslow of Buffalo; and two sisters, Susan Young of Bridger, Mont., and Patricia Durham of Gallatin Gateway, Mont. Robert Swisse

Robert Swisse, 79, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2005, at his residence. Viewing is 3-6 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Nelson and the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Cremation will follow, with inurnment in Savage, Mont. Mr. Swisse was born July 9, 1924, in Lambert, Mont., to Frank and Myrtle (Mitchell) Swisse. He grew up in the Crane and Savage area, and was a graduate of Savage High School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served in the medical corps. He returned to Wyoming after service. He married Mary E. Williams in 1948; they divorced in the 1960s. He ranched with his father-in-law at Ranchester and later on the Padlock Ranch. He worked construction on roads in the Big Horns and on the Yellowtail and Libby (Mont.) dams. He married Nellie Mynatt Sept. 7, 1969, in Libby, Mont. They returned to Wyoming in 1972, and he worked for Decker Coal until 1987, when he retired. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid football fan. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; five sons, Timothy B. of St. Louis, Mo., Robert of Deer Creek, Minn., and Terry, Don and Tim L., all of Sheridan; five daughters, Debra Kester of Round Mt., Calif., Dennette Tyra of Greybull, Cheryl Swisse of Mountain View, Colleen Hazelquist of Riverside, Calif., and Carla Long of Sheridan; two sisters, Frances Woodard of Billings and Nola Grizzell of Phoenix, Ariz.; 33 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Joe Toland

Joe H. Toland, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Toland was born June 16, 1922, in Sheridan to Joseph and Lenor (Livers) Toland. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a B24 radio gunner with the 13th Air Corps Pacific Theater. He married Marilyn Switzer June 8, 1947, at the Switzer Ranch in Sheridan. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1951 from the University of Wyoming, with a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening, square dancing, traveling, spending time with his family and having coffee and lunch with friends. He delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Jeans and Queens Square Dance Club, the Powell Kiwanis, Sheridan Rotary, Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He was a charter member of the Powell Elks Club and transferred membership to the Sheridan Elks. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Wayne; and two sisters, Thelma Guilfoyle and Relda Mossholder. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; two daughters, Nancy Sims of Ridgefield, Wash., and Jody Deeds of Sheridan; a son, Dr. Greg of Powell; a sister, Dorothy Sanders of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. George Melvin Christenson

George Melvin Christenson, 86, of Alamo, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Las Palmas Healthcare Center in McAllen, Texas. He was father of Alice Overturf of Sheridan. Memorial service was 9 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo, Texas. A family memorial service will be at a later date in Minnesota. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul. Arrangements are with Memorial Funeral Home of San Juan, Texas. Mr. Christenson was born in Plainview, Minn., and had lived in Alamo for 11 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Half Moon during World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Biever Christenson; two sons, James and Daniel; and two grandchildren. Sheridan native Joseph Holub, 77, of Glenrock died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Central Wyoming Hospice Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Robb Jupp of Glenrock Fundamental Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Glenrock Cemetery. Mr. Holub was born Sept. 21, 1926, in Sheridan to John and Mary (Brisko) Holub. He served as a Tech 4, postal clerk, in the U.S. Army from 1944-46. He married Sue Ketchum; they later divorced. He married Edna (Portela) Logan Jan. 23, 1964, in Fort Morgan, Colo. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for Rissler McMurry, Wortham Machinery, Wilber Christenson, Mullen Mining and Glenrock Coal until 1986 when he retired. He was a member of the Fundamental Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Deer Creek Museum. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and welding. He also enjoyed making wine, polka music and playing cards. He was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Logan; three brothers, John, Frank and Eddie; and three sisters, Helen Stenthorn, Frances Kleweno and Annie Serff. Survivors include two daughters, Doris Ann Mobley of Casper and Linda Peppersack of Glenrock; two sisters, Josephine Hill of Billings and Mary Buell of Sheridan; three brothers, Karl of Sheridan, William of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lawrence of Alliance, Neb.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

S. Stuart Seaman

S. Stuart Seaman, 47, of San Francisco died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in the California Pacific Hospital in San Francisco. He was brother of Jacque Johnson and Sally Stultz, both of Sheridan. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Worland with the Rev. Marion Canterbury officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Cremation has taken place, and the ashes will be buried in Riverview Memorial Gardens in Worland at a later date. Arrangements are with Veile Mortuary of Worland. Mr. Seaman was born March 6, 1956, in Worland to Jack M. and Alberta J. “Bert” (Nelson) Seaman. He was a 1974 graduate of Worland High School, where he was active in band and the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Worland Tyrolean Band. He graduated from Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in public accounting. He worked for Arthur Andersen & Co. as a tax accountant and later was a tax specialist with Merrill Lynch, Hubbard. He was senior tax accountant with Deloitte & Touche in San Francisco from 1984 until his death. Other survivors include his parents; a brother, Brad of Worland; and three nephews. Judy Elizabeth Fowler, 55, of Hamilton, Mont., died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at the Valley View Estates. She was sister of Jim Burris of Sheridan. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Corvallis, Mont., with Pastor Barry Curtis officiating. Committal services will be in the Corvallis Cemetery. A reception will follow at 729 Honey House Lane in Corvallis. Arrangements are with Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton. Mrs. Fowler was born Oct. 16, 1948, in Buffalo to Albert and Helen Burris. She graduated with an Associates degree in secretarial studies from Union College in Lincoln, Neb. She married James Fowler Aug. 15, 1971. She enjoyed camping, hiking, bird watching and painting. She struggled for many years with Alzheimer's disease. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and taught Bible classes and worked with the Pathfiender Club before her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents. Other survivors include her husband, of Corvallis; two sisters, Carol Garland of Gillette and Terri Horner of Napal, India; six nieces; and four nephews. Jacquelyn Jeanne “Jackie” Hoxie, 74, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Hoxie was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Nampa, Idaho, to Foster and Mabel Marie (Chapman) Morris. The family lived in Idaho, Oregon and Washington before settling in West Seattle, Wash. Mrs. Hoxie was a graduate of West Seattle High School. She attended business school in Seattle before going to work for Boeing Aircraft Co. there. She married Eugene Hoxie June 18, 1949, in Seattle. The Hoxies owned and operated a chain of dry cleaning establishments in the area for several years. They later co-owned Hoxie's Books in Des Moines, Wash. Mrs. Hoxie spent most of her life being a mother and homemaker. She taught Sunday school in the Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Parent-Teacher Association in Seattle. She and Mr. Hoxie moved to Sheridan in 1997. She was a member of the Lady's Bible Study Group of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed crafts, scrapbooking, camping and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Eugene “Gene” Jr. of Sheridan and Darryl of Thayne; five daughters, Leatha Traphagan, Leahna Hoxie and Lonette Sullivan, all of Sheridan and Loreen Farkas and Lydel Shanks, both of Lovell; a sister, Geraldine Fitzgerald of Florida; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Marjorie P. Roth

Marjorie P. Roth, 85, of Story died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Sheridan Manor after a battle with cancer. Viewing will be 5-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Tim Tromble of Story Community Church officiating. Mrs. Roth was born April 14, 1918, in Decatur County (Oberlin), Kan., to Don and Ovanda (Bobbitt) Koehler. She married Welton E. Roth Nov. 24, 1935, in Norton, Kan. They moved to Sheridan in 1939 and leased a ranch near Wyarno. In 1945 they bought the C.P. Story homestead on Upper Prairie Dog Creek Road near Banner. They bought the town of Banner in 1949, and Mrs. Roth was commissioned as postmaster, a position she held until 1956, when the Roths sold the Banner Store and moved to Story. She was a founding member of the Story Civic Association and organized the Story Rabies Clinic. She was in charge of the clinic for 20 years. She was a member of the Story Garden Club, Story Women's Club and the Story Quilters. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, hunting, fishing, flowers and bird-watching. She was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973 and by a sister, two brothers and a grandson. Survivors include a son, Gary W. of Sheridan; a daughter, Marilyn K. Butcher of Banner; a sister, Faye Lombardi of Denver; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Avis Elizabeth Waddell

Former Sheridan resident Avis Elizabeth (Werner) Waddell, 76, of Holyoke, Colo., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in Thornton, Colo. Rosary was recited Wednesday at the Roberts-Baucke Funeral Service Chapel in Holyoke. Mass was celebrated Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke. Burial was in Alliance (Neb.) Cemetery. Mrs. Waddell was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Spotted Horse to George Werner and Sadie Mae (Norbeck) Werner. She was raised on a homestead ranch and graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Dean W. Powell in 1947. The family operated a dairy farm outside Alliance. She married William Waddell in 1972 in Sheridan. She lived in Sheridan until 1989, when she moved to Holyoke to be closer to family. She worked at the Golden Plains Motel and Holyoke Elementary School. She enjoyed reading, making chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren and watching “Days of Our Lives” on television. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Jolly Dozen Extension Club in Holyoke. She was preceded in death by both husbands and by two brothers, Tom and George; three sisters, Lorraine, Cecilia and Frances; and one granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Teri Ferguson of Denver and Elizabeth Powell of Las Vegas; two sons, Gary Powell of Haxtun and Dan Powell of Sheridan; a brother, Rupert Werner of Recluse; four sisters, Mary Fowler of Rapid City, Marguerite Honley of Denver, Patricia Hanford of Worland and Christina Mitchell of Gillette; four grandchildren; and by stepchildren, step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Malcolm Craig Campbell, 57, of Billings died Tuesday Feb. 11, 2004, at his residence due to cancer. He was brother of Celia Urion of Sheridan. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Cremation or Funeral Gallery, Cremation Society of Montana. A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge, 934 Lewis Ave. Mr. Campbell was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Casper to Malcolm L. `Bud' and Patricia L. (Fero) Campbell. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and Bachelor of Science degree in geology. He entered the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Vietnam from 1969-70. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star. He was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1974. He married Natalia Belikova in May 1993. He worked for Petroleum-Geologist until his illness forced him to retire. He enjoyed classical music and studying Russian history. He was preceded in death by his mother. She worked as a private secretary to Ralph L. Jackson in Memphis, Tenn., until 1979, when the family moved to Sheridan. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Sheridan and was past president of the Professional Business Women's Association in Memphis. She enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, spending time with her family and, when she was younger, playing basketball. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Leroy; and three sisters, Lucille Ball, Josie Hylander and Jane Andrews. She worked as a bookkeeper for most of her life. She volunteered at the Sheridan Senior Center and Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery, travel, playing cards — especially pinochle — and was an avid reader. Steven LeRoy Wheeler, 51, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hope Community Church with Pastor Gary Burdick, Dr. Karl Hunt and Dave Asbury officiating. A memorial service and committal of cremains will be at a later date in Lander. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Wheeler was born Aug. 2, 1952, in Grand Rapids, Minn., to Dave LeRoy and Alice Marie (Wagner) Wheeler. The family moved to Lander when Mr. Wheeler was 10 years old. He attended school in Lander and graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School. He joined the Army in 1970 and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash., and Frankfurt, Germany, during the Vietnam era. He was discharged from service in 1977. He returned to Lander and worked for U.S. Steel. In 1987, he moved to Elko, Nev., and worked as a heavy-equipment operator and union organizer for the Barrick Gold Strike Mine. He moved to Sheridan in 1995 and worked at various jobs before joining the Volunteers of America. He worked at the VOA's homeless shelter on the Sheridan VA Medical Center grounds until February 2003, when he retired due to ill health. He married Debra Ackerman July 11, 1981, in Ankney, Iowa. They divorced, then remarried Feb. 14, 2003, in Sheridan. Mr. Wheeler was a member of American Legion and enjoyed fishing, bingo, reading, movies, television and politics. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dave LeRoy II of Sheridan; a daughter, Dawn Jamelle Wheeler of Sheridan; two brothers, Ken of Kaycee and Craig of Sheridan; two sisters, Jeanne Loveland and Lori Burgess, both of Sheridan; and one grandchild. Six of their eight children were born at the family home in Kleenburn. Mrs. Aksamit enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, going to garage sales and sewing. She made quilts for her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and one sister. R. Samuel Dillon

R. Samuel “Sam” Dillon Jr., 88, of Napa Valley, Calif., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Napa Valley. He was father of Cissy Dillon of Sheridan. A memorial service will be at a later date in Hancock, Md. Mr. Dillon was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Hancock to Rezon Samuel Dillon Sr. and Martha McAvoy Dillon. He attended school in Hancock. He was a 1933 graduate of The Mercersburg (Pa.) Academy and a 1937 graduate of Dartmouth (N.H.) College. He received a master's degree from the London School of Economics in 1991. Mr. Dillon served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 as commanding officer of a landing craft in amphibious assaults in North Africa, Sicily, southern France and Okinawa. After the war, he joined his father as partner and general manager of Dillon Orchards, which his father founded in 1900. He was president of the Green Lane Orchards from 1958-65. He also was president of the National Peach Council and Maryland Horticultural Society. He also owned hotels in western Maryland and St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1963-66, representing Washington County, and twice ran for U.S. Congress. He was Far East congressional liaison officer for the Agency for International Development from 1966-74. He was a member of the Hancock Historical Society and Maryland Historical Society and author of “A History of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.” He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Fox Fuller, in 1979. Survivors include three other children, Sandy Dillon of Coronado, Calif., Anita Dillon of Greenbrae, Calif., and David Dillon of Sacramento, Calif.; and two granddaughters. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

 

Michael J. Murphy

Michael J. Murphy, 58, of Washington state, died of cardiac arrest Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, according to his family. He was brother of Mark J. Murphy of Sheridan and son of former Sheridan residents Walter “Spud” and Kim Murphy. Memorial Mass was Thursday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Spokane, Wash. Mr. Murphy was born Oct. 17, 1945, in Greeley, Colo. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Cheyenne and received a bachelor's degree from Seattle University and a law degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane. He was an analyst for Army Intelligence at Tori Station in Okinawa, Ryuku Islands, and later was stationed at Warren, Va., where he worked with U.S. Rep. Teno Roncalio. He joined Associated Industries in 1976 as a labor relations specialist. He became president of the company in 1986. He enjoyed reading, camping, fishing and exploring. Other survivors include his wife, Joan; two children, Sam and Marya; his father; and a sister, Mary Whalen.

 

Velma Jean Timm Buddemeyer

Sheridan native Velma Jean Timm Buddemeyer, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Chandler, Ariz. She was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Sheridan to Martin and Edna Timm. She attended schools in Sheridan through eighth grade and was a graduate of high school in Greeley, Colo. She attended Stevens Women's College in Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri. She played violin with the Columbia, Mo., Symphony. She married Carl Buddemeyer; he preceded her in death. She taught school for 32 years in Chandler, then was a volunteer teacher of English as a second language after retirement. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Davila, Susan Elmblad and Pat; six granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Claire A. Zeiner, 77, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside committal of cremains will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Zeiner was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Bethlehem, Pa., to Henry and Agnes (McDermott) Dietz. She graduated from Bethlehem High School and attended Easton Nursing School. She worked at Bush and Bull Department Store, Laros Silk Co., Bethlehem Steel Co. and New Jersey Manufacturer's Insurance Co. She married James Zeiner in Bethlehem Aug. 27, 1949. She lived in Pennington, N.J., and Hamilton Square, N.J., before moving to Sheridan. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and enjoyed reading the Bible, crossword puzzles, music, playing auto bridge, pinochle, going to the theater on Broadway and travel. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and George. Survivors include a son, James K. Zeiner Jr. of Brick, N.J.; a daughter, Carol Olovich of Sheridan; a sister, Elizabeth Bowser of Northampton, Pa.; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

Clyde Potter

Clyde O. Potter, 88, of Gillette died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette after a battle with leukemia. He was father of Ellen Marie Spainhower of Sheridan. Funeral services were Jan. 28 in First Christian Church in Gillette. Burial was in the Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Arrangements were with Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mr. Potter was born July 25, 1915, in King City, Mo., to Charlotte “Lottie” (Fry) and Alva L. Potter. He was raised and educated in Gillette and was a 1933 graduate of Campbell County High School. He married Juanita Haack Sept. 19, 1937, in King City. They homesteaded in Wyoming and owned and operated the Potter Dairy for seven and a half years. Mr. Potter also owned Potters Pits and provided shale for most of the streets in Gillette. He also raised wheat. He enjoyed hunting elk, deer, antelope and jackrabbits and did gunsmithing as a sideline. He was active with First Christian Church in Gillette, teaching the men's Sunday school class for 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife in July 2003 and by an infant son and a brother, Donald. In addition to his daughter, survivors include a brother, Eugene of Casper; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Campbell County Burial Fund.

 

Chris L. Gleason

Sheridan native Chris Leroy Gleason, 37, of Klamath Falls, Ore., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in Tulelake, Calif. A service of tribute and love will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Chapel in Klamath Falls. Inurnment of cremains will be in Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens. Mr. Gleason was born June 21, 1966, in Sheridan to Roy and Nancy (Simpson) Gleason. He attended Arvada-Clearmont High School and worked with several area ranchers. He later worked for construction companies in Montana and California. He married Shannon Rae Smith in 1989 in Las Vegas. They later returned to Wyoming and owned and operated GNG Products, a pole-barn company. Mr. Gleason went to work for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in 1997 and moved to Klamath Falls with the railroad in 2000. He worked his way up to locomotive engineer. He enjoyed being with family and friends, working with Labrador retrievers, hunting, fishing, the outdoors and working on cars. He was a member and representative of the United Transportation Union, Local 1841. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Bill and Bud. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Edward, and two daughters, Bonnie Jean and Courtney Bree, all of Klamath Falls; his mother, Nancy Rideout of Sheridan; two brothers, David and Dwayne, both of Colorado; and three sisters, Fawn of Colorado, Janette of Wyoming and Susan of San Diego.

Former Sheridan resident Albert L. “Ole” Olson Jr., 75, of Winthrop, Wash., died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in the Yuma (Ariz.) Medical Center. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis as celebrant. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Olson was born April 2, 1928, in Rockville Center, N.Y., to Albert L. and Marguerite (Matedero) Olson Sr. He grew up and attended schools in Valley Stream, N.Y., and was a 1945 graduate of Valley Stream High School. He attended St. Bonaventure College and majored in music. He joined the Army and served in the Philippines. He returned to New York and owned and operated a TV repair and music store. He married Theresa M. Logan June 24, 1950, in Olean, N.Y. The Olsons moved to Sheridan in 1960. He worked for Safeway. In the late 1960s, Mr. Olson went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1988. He also operated a part-time framing business in Sheridan. He was a lifetime member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 and played in bands in the Sheridan area, especially at the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling around the country in his motor home, driving his dune buggy and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include his companion of many years, Ronnie Davis of Winthrop; four sons, Leonard F. of Sparks, Nev., Thomas J. of Sheridan, Steven G. of Boston and Terry M. of Laramie; three daughters, Anne M. Edmonson of Carson City, Nev., Margaret A. Martinez of Ranchester and Catherine A. Forner of Dugway, Utah; a sister, Margaret J. Maday of Adirondack, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Clarence A. Weberg, 90, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Anderson officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Weberg was born April 9, 1913, in Park River, N.D., to Arne and Carrie (Kveseth) Weberg. He grew up and attended schools in Froid, Mont., and was a 1931 graduate of Froid High School. He was a 1933 graduate of the Chillicothe (Mo.) Business School. He married LaVerne Fleischman May. 9, 1931, in Froid. He returned to Froid after business school and worked as a bookkeeper for Farmer's Union Oil Co., the Farmer's Union Trading Co. and the Farmer's Union Carriers. The Webergs moved to Sheridan in 1942. Mr. Weberg was a 1945 graduate of the Lutheran Brethren Bible School and Seminary in Fergus Falls, Minn., and taught at the commercial department of Oldham (S.D.) High School. He also served the Oldham Baptist Church and the Drakola Community Church as a lay pastor. The Webergs returned to Sheridan in 1948, and Mr. Weberg worked for Westbrook Motors, Sheridan Motor Inc., N.A. Nelson Construction Co. and the Jersey Creamery. He retired in 1980. He served as minister of the Community Church in Ranchester from 1963-80. He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, working with church literature and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by two sisters, a half brother and a half sister. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Sherman of Ranchester; two daughters, Louise Kishpaugh of Sparks, Nev., and Sylvia Phillips of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Patrick Alan Leonard

Patrick Alan Leonard, 54, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County following a long illness. His body has been donated to the University of Colorado Medical School. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Leonard was born July 22, 1949, in Longmont, Colo., to Betty Jean (Waldo) and Ralph David Leonard. He grew up in Bairoil and attended high school in Rawlins and Glenrock before attending Western Community College. He served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter door gunner in Vietnam. He was a guardrail foreman for the Wyoming Department of Transportation until illness forced his retirement. He married Suzanne Kaye Storck Jan. 17, 1983, in Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his father and two infant children. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gretchan Leonard of Sheridan and Kara Leonard of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two sons, James of Sacramento, Calif., and Daniel of Santa Rosa, Calif.; his mother of Casper; a brother, Danny of Laramie; and six grandchildren. Fred H. `Fritz' Klier, 77, of Ranchester died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ranchester Community Church with Pastor Nels Nelson III officiating. Mr. Klier was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Wheatland to Fred “Dutch” and Avis (Wilson) Klier. He grew up in Wheatland and Uva and was a 1944 graduate of Wheatland High School. He served in the U.S. Army after high school in the last years of World War II. After the service, he worked with his father in the electrical business before going to work for the Wyoming Highway Department. He married Mary Foley June 12, 1965, in Wheatland. He played guitar and sang with his band, The Rawhiders, for many years. He retired from the highway department in 1977, then operated his own landscaping and excavating company in Cheyenne before moving to Ranchester. He worked on cars as a hobby and drove a school bus in Ranchester until 1993, when he retired. He belonged to Dayton/Ranchester Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Republican Party and was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed classic cars, music, local politics, hunting and shooting. Survivors include his wife; four sons, George of Wheatland, Alan of Willits, Calif., Steven of Gillette and Gary of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four daughters, Karen Davis and Connie Gayle Shifflett, both of Wheatland, Lisa Clement of Meridian, Idaho, and Lorna Kay James of Parkman; 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
