Jackson D. Bentley

Sheridan native Jackson D. Bentley, 97, of Peoria, Ariz., died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in Peoria. A memorial service will be Saturday in Peoria under direction of Best Funeral Home. Mr. Jackson was born April 9, 1908, in Sheridan to Bishop O. and Antonia (Dierfeld) Bentley. He attended elementary school in Sheridan and was a 1925 graduate of St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wis. He was a 1929 graduate of Ripon (Wis.) College. He married Louise Huelsman in 1930 in Fond du Lac, Wis. They moved to Sheridan, and Mr. Bentley owned and operated Bentley Clothing Store, which was started in 1906 by B.O. Bentley. Jackson D. Bentley sold the store to Ray Neighbors and Herman Castle in 1956. He was a member of the Masonic Bodies Free Masonry, Lodge 8 A.F. & A.M. for more than 50 years and the Kalif Shrine and York Rite for 69 years. He belonged to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sheridan and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Sun City, Ariz., after moving to Arizona. He owned a ranch at Ulm. His wife died in 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Pisaneschi of Hereford, Ariz., and Patricia Fox of Cheyenne; a son, Jackson Bentley Jr. of Elmira, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Florence P. Jester

Sheridan County native Florence P. Jester, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in Kingston Residence (nursing home) in Marion, Ohio. A private family service is planned later. Burial is in Marion Cemetery. Arrangements are with Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. Mrs. Jester was born April 23, 1924, in Monarch to Michael and Anna (Sieczkowski) Kawulok. She was a 1942 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Wilbur Q. Jester in 1944; he died in 1996. She was an assistant director of the Veterans Administration in Cleveland. Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Marion and Michael of Homestead, Fla.; a sister, Elaine Wondra of Ranchester; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

 

M. Jane Durkee

A private memorial service for M. Jane Durkee, 77, of Sheridan will be later for her family. Mrs. Durkee died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Durkee was born June 13, 1928, to Harry and Pauline Lewis. She grew up in the Sheridan area and worked on ranches with her family. She received an emergency degree and taught in a one-room school in Recluse. She married Carl L. Durkee in 1952. The family lived in Meeteetse and, later, Casper, where Mrs. Durkee was a bookkeeper. The Durkees moved to Sheridan after their children were grown. Mrs. Durkee enjoyed the Big Horn Mountains, cooking and being around horses. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; a son, Jerry; brothers Jack, Ralph and Bob Lewis; a sister, Jenny Moyer; and a granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Beard and Polly Carpenter; two sisters, Betty Conner and Jo Smith, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Robert W. McBride

Robert W. McBride, 88, of Buffalo and Honolulu died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, in Hawaii. He was father of Robert K. McBride of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Union Congregational Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Nancy Brooks officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. until noon Friday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. McBride was born Jan. 21, 1918, to Samuel and Nercilla Fullerton McBride at the family ranch south of Buffalo. He grew up on the ranch and was a 1936 graduate of Johnson County High School. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and served as eminent commander. He was a member of the UW student senate, Iron Skull, Phi Epsilon Phi and a cheerleader. He married Marie Kennedy on May 4, 1941, in Laramie. She died in Hawaii in January 1997. Mr. McBride was in UW's ROTC when the United States entered World War II, and he was called into active duty as a second lieutenant in the Army. He served in the European Theater with the 109th Infantry, 28th Infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Hertgen Forest. He was captured by the Germans and was a prisoner of war until his liberation by the Russian army. He received the Bronze Star and Silver Star for gallantry in action. He returned to Buffalo after the war. He remained in the active Reserve until he retired as a lieutenant colonel. He worked as sales manager with Wyoming Automotive in Buffalo and Torrington from 1945 until joining First National Bank in Buffalo in 1946. He retired from First National in 1988 as president and chairman of the bank's board of directors. He and his partner, Bob Holt, also operated Johnson County Insurance Agency for 25 years, and Mr. McBride was involved in ranching with a brother, Kelly. After retiring, he and Mrs. McBride enjoyed travel, spending time with their grandchildren and being at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. He also enjoyed dancing, golf, telling stories, fly-fishing and reading history books, especially about Abraham Lincoln. He kept a vegetable garden until he was 85. He married Maria Santos in Hawaii in August 1998, and they made their home in Buffalo and Honolulu. They enjoyed dancing and traveling. Mr. McBride was a member and Sunday school superintendent of the Congregational Church in Buffalo for 20 years. He was a member of the Republican Party, Buffalo 4-H and the state 4-H Foundation, Rotary (where he was a Paul Harris Fellow), Anchor Lodge No. 7 AF and AM, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Jim Gatchell Museum, Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association, Johnson County Chamber of Commerce, the park board, YMCA Foundation, Wyoming Industrial Development Corp. and Buffalo's Diamond Jubilee organizers. He also was a director and treasurer of the Big Horn Mountain Roundup. He served six years on the UW board of trustees and was president of the Alumni Association board. He received the university's Outstanding Alumni Award in 1990. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sam, who was killed in World War II. Survivors include a second son, Scott F. of Buffalo; a daughter, Debby Hunkins of Wheatland; a brother, Kelly of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Michael George Fenster

Michael George Fenster, 48, of Buffalo died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, in St. Vincent's Hospital of Billings after a long battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. George Von Kaenel as celebrant. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. A private family burial will follow the Mass on Thursday. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to an educational fund established for Mr. Fenster's children.

Andrea Lee DeBolt

Former Sheridan resident Andrea Lee DeBolt, 62, of Torrington died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Methodist Church in Torrington, according to her family. Arrangements are with Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington.

M. Jane Durkee

M. Jane Durkee, 77, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Private family memorial services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Meredith A. `Jimi' Kerns

Sheridan County native Meredith A. “Jimi” Kerns, 77, of Yuma, Ariz., died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at her home of natural causes. Cremation has taken place, and services are planned this summer at the family cemetery on Double Rafter Ranch on Pass Creek. Arrangements are with Sunset Vista Funeral Home and Crematory in Yuma. Mrs. Kerns was born May 9, 1928, in Sheridan to Dorothy and Dave Wallace. She grew up on the family ranch near Parkman, where she taught school for four years. She married Burton C. Kerns on Feb. 22, 1953, on the ranch. She enjoyed being a ranch wife and was also an artist and author. She was involved with the Dog and Cat Shelter in Sheridan and belonged to Parkman Homemakers club. She was preceded in death by a sister, Patsy Hamilton, and a son, Kevin. Helen Ewoldsen

Former Sheridan resident Helen J. Ewoldsen, 84, of Avon, Ind., died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at her residence. Funeral services will be Tuesday in Avon. She married C.B. “Bud” Ewoldsen in 1951 in Sheridan. They worked for Eatons' Ranch at the time. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Amy; two sons, George and Nels; one sister; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to a recipient of the donor's choice.

Eugene William `Mike' DesJarlais

Eugene William “Mike” DesJarlais, 96, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. DesJarlais was born July 21, 1909, on a farm near Bonesteel, Gregory County, S.D., to Edmond J. and Mae Angela (Rowland) DesJarlais. He lived in Scottsbluff, Neb., Casper and Sheridan while he was growing up. As a teen, he worked as a waiter and bellman at the Sheridan Inn. In his early 20s, he ran whiskey with his father and brothers from Casper to San Antonio. In his mid-20s, he traveled back and forth from Sheridan to New York City to study opera. He later helped build the petroleum tank farm in Evansville, worked as a carpenter in Las Vegas and at the Salt Flats atomic testing grounds near there and in the uranium mines in the Gas Hills near Riverton. He was custodian at Holy Name School in Sheridan in the 1950s. He married Wanda Allie on June 14, 1957, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Spokane, Wash. He enjoyed cooking, playing his guitar and singing, working on his truck and Greyhound bus and drinking coffee and visiting with friends. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and past member of United Mine Workers of America. He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene; two brothers, Henry and Ralph; and five sisters, Eva Barrett, Laura Dahlquist, Esther Lynch, Fern Rumley and Alice Stolcis. Peter `Pete' Perry

Memorial services for former Sheridan resident Peter “Pete” Perry, 71, of Casper were Friday at First Baptist Church in Casper. Mr. Perry died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in Life Care Center of Casper after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were with Bustard's Funeral Directors and Crematory. Mr. Perry was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Barre, Mass., to Fredrick Russell and Hester (Flood) Perry. He came to Sheridan by train with his mother and siblings when he was 12. He was a 1954 graduate of Big Horn High School. After graduation, he worked for the Wyoming Department of Transportation and was transferred to Casper port of entry. He married Jean McIntosh on Jan. 5, 1957. He joined the Casper Fire Department in 1961, retiring in 1976. He then worked as a carpenter and fiber optics technician. He enjoyed roping, rodeos, being with his family, Saturday dances in Barnum and Kaycee, hunting, fishing and sporting events with his grandchildren. He was a Casper Mountain Ski Patrolman. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sharon Williams of Belgrade, Mont., and Karen Wilkinson and Patsy Horton, both of Casper; two brothers, Carlton of Sheridan and Randall of Clearmont; three sisters, Priscilla Munsey of British Columbia, Canada, Louise Burley of Grand Junction, Colo., and Martha Ann Clarkson of Denver; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Helen Geck

Funeral services for Helen Geck, 95, of Sheridan will be later in Winter Haven, Fla., with burial in Rolling Hills Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Geck died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at Westview Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1910, in Glen Ullen, N.D., to Charles and Elizabeth (Andor) Horst. She married Adolph Geck on Aug. 22, 1932, in Bismarck, N.D. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and, in her earlier years, knitting and crafts. She moved to Sheridan in 2005 to be near her daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Wallace; and two grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Olson of Sheridan and Audrey Hartsell of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a son, Doug of Overland Park, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Ryan W. Kobielusz

Visitation for Ryan W. Kobielusz, 17, of Sheridan will be 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with graveside committal services. Those planning to attend the committal services are invited to meet at the funeral home before 2 p.m. Mr. Kobielusz died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006. He was born Oct. 1, 1988, in Sheridan to Robert and Sherry (Stimpson) Kobielusz. He was a student at Sheridan High School. He enjoyed playing video games on the Internet and thrill rides, especially roller coasters. He also enjoyed miniature golf, snowmobiling, hiking and spending time with his friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ardean Wilson of Lodge Grass, Mont., and Harold Stimpson of Parkman. Survivors include his parents of Sheridan; a brother, Kevin of Orlando, Fla.; grandparents John and Joyce Kobielusz and Louise Wilson, all of Sheridan, and Norma Stimpson of Parkman; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Dorothy Mae `Dotty' Nichols

Dorothy Mae “Dotty” Nichols, 51, of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006. She was daughter and stepdaughter of Glenna and Jim Conley and sister of Candice Braley, all of Sheridan. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Billings Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Arrangements are with Yates Funeral Homes. Mrs. Nichols was born May 9, 1954, to Allen and Glenna (Twiss) Cazier. She married Curt Cline in 1974. She married Duane Nichols in 1990. He preceded her in death. She was a volunteer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Foundation. She was also preceded in death by her father; a stepfather, Andy Anderson of Sheridan; and a brother, Duke Allen Cazier. James W. Legg

Memorial services for James W. Legg, 90, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, with military rites by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Legg died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Raymond to James A. and Maude (Cutshaw) Legg. He grew up near Cody and graduated from Cody High School. He attended the University of Montana until he enlisted in the Army. He served with the topographical engineers and was a member of the group that drew the topographical map of Normandy Beach for the D-Day invasion. He married Florence Lozar in 1942 in Yuma, Ariz. She died in 1952. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation before returning to Wyoming to attend the University of Wyoming. After graduating from UW, he moved to Riverton as the associate county agent. He married Geneva Seamonds on Dec. 19, 1952, in Lander. They operated a flower shop there until Mr. Legg returned to work for BuRec. The family later lived in Grand Junction, Colo., Napa, Calif., and Klamath Falls, Ore. Mr. Legg retired in 1977. The family moved to Sheridan in 1994. Mr. Legg was a member of the Masonic Lodge, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, photography and his family. Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Melvin of Napa, Donald of Mesa, Colo., and David of Aurora, Colo.; three daughters, Judith Butkovitch of San Antonio, Barbara Tedrick of Alturis, Calif., and Laura Strout of Sheridan; a brother, Gordon of Sheridan; three sisters, Dorothy Legg of Cody, Lucille Mason of Caldwell, Idaho, and Joan Lukesh of Boise, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. James E. Donoho

James E. Donoho, 75, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Donoho was born Jan. 15, 1931, in Mitchell, S.D., to Howard and Christine (Leitgeb) Donoho. He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and served as a medical tech until 1954, when he was honorably discharged. He married Marlene Bettcher in 1956 in Sturgis, S.D. He enjoyed fishing, dogs, and restoring automobiles. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Jean. Survivors include two sons, Everett and Jason, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Kathy Talcott of Anchorage, Alaska, and Debbie Blanchard of Sheridan; a brother, Tom of Chicago; a sister, Barb Campbell of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Theresa Susan `Tracy' Watson

Sheridan County native Theresa Susan `Tracy' Watson, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, in Burbank, Calif. Memorial services were Feb. 4 at Valley Funeral Home in Burbank. Mrs. Watson was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Acme to Austrian immigrants Joseph and Susanna Gruber. She attended elementary school in Acme and was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. She moved to California during World War II. She worked as a Western Union telegraph operator and, later, worked at Lockheed for 35 years. She belonged to St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church and the Patricians. She also was a member of the Mellowtones Choir for many years. She was married to Larry Watson for 43 years. He died in 1988. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Siegfried. Survivors include a son, Richard, and daughter, Tracy Watson-Wynn, both of California; her twin brother, Richard Gruber of Billings; three other siblings, Eddie Gruber of Sacramento, Calif., Frank Gruber of Greybull and Jo Benz of Lincoln, Ore.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Joseph F. Maier

Sheridan native Joseph F. Maier, 85, of Mesa, Ariz., died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, in Fort Collins, Colo. A rosary/wake service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Cheyenne. The casket will be closed. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne. A second service will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Children's Home Chapel in Torrington. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Torrington with full military honors. The Rev. Carl Beavers will conduct all services. Arrangements are with Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington. Mr. Maier was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Sheridan to Joseph A. and Edna (Fauver) Maier. He grew up on a ranch outside town and attended Sheridan schools. He was a 1938 graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Compton Junior College in Southern California and the University of Wyoming. He interrupted his studies at UW to enlist in the Army after Pearl Harbor. He served with the infantry in the Aleutian Islands. After his discharge, he returned to the University of Wyoming and graduated first in his class from the College of Law. He was admitted to the bar in July 1947. Mr. Maier married Helen K. Kelley on June 27, 1942, in Laramie. She died July 14, 1991. Mr. Maier married Ruth Ann Heist on Sept. 18, 1993, in Cheyenne. They retired to Mesa in 2001. He was in private legal practice in Sheridan and Torrington for 25 years. He was appointed by Gov. Stan Hathaway in 1972 as judge of the 1st Judicial District Court in Cheyenne. He served until 1987, when he retired, but he continued to hear cases on retirement status. In a February 2005 interview published in Wyoming Lawyer, Wyoming Supreme Court Justice E. James Burke cited Mr. Maier as one of three judges who had the most impact on Burke's early career. Mr. Maier also served in the Judge Advocate General Corps in the Army Reserve. He retired from the Reserve as a colonel in 1974. He served on the Goshen County School District board of trustees and was a tennis coach at Torrington High School. He was a member of the Wyoming State School Boards Association, a trustee of St. Joseph's Children's Home in Torrington, a member of the International Association of Trial Judges, Rotary International and the American Legion, and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed fishing and playing bridge and cribbage. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Katheryne “Kit” Earl of Torrington, Maggi Murdock of Casper and Mary Anne Maier of Longmont, Colo.; a son, John of Torrington; a stepdaughter, Judy Douglass of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; a stepson, Dan Heist of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; a sister, Della Vivion of Rawlins; 14 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. James E. Donoho, 75, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Donoho was born Jan. 15, 1931, in Mitchell, S.D., to Howard and Christine (Leitgeb) Donoho. He enlisted in the Army in 1951 and served as a medical tech until 1954, when he was honorably discharged. He married Marlene Bettcher in 1956 in Sturgis, S.D. He enjoyed fishing, dogs, and restoring automobiles. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Jean. After being honorably discharged, he became a mechanic and was self-employed repairing ranch equipment. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 7 and Elks Lodge 520. Ellen Marie Burnett, 84, of Wheatland died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. She was mother of Bill Kesner of Sheridan. Funeral services were Saturday at First Christian Church in Wheatland. Burial was in Wheatland Cemetery with graveside rites by Order of Eastern Star Wheatland Branch 11. Arrangements were with Platte Chapel of Gorman Funeral Homes & Monuments in Wheatland. Mrs. Burnett was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Granite Canon to Anna Marie (Gensel) and Steven Haarup Willadsen. She attended schools in Cheyenne and graduated from Cheyenne High School. She married Arthur “Buster” Burnett on Dec. 28, 1958, in Wheatland. He died May 25, 1985. She spent most of her life ranching. She was a member of the National Purebred Columbia Sheep Association and 4-H and participated in University of Wyoming livestock judging. She also was a member of the Advisory Council for Archer Research, Platte County Art Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of Eastern Star, and Christian Scientist Church. She enjoyed painting, and some of her work was exhibited in Washington, D.C. She also enjoyed gardening, raising livestock and playing the piano. Survivors include another son, Steve of Wheatland; two brothers, Duane and Jack Willadsen, both of Wheatland; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hoblit was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Gillette to Marion Lunceford and Effie Mae (Eisele) Ruff. She grew up on the family homestead at Wildcat and attended country schools and Campbell County High School. She married Delbert H. Hoblit on March 10, 1942, in Billings. They moved to Sheridan in 1946 after Mr. Hoblit was discharged from the U.S. Army. Mrs. Hoblit did the bookkeeping for her husband's construction company, Hodaka motorcycles and Polaris snow machines businesses. She was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed Atlanta Braves baseball games and attended one game in the new stadium in Georgia. She also enjoyed cooking, yard work, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, being with her family, and watching NASCAR races and bull riding. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister. Agnes Celia Hedwig Fletcher

Visitation for Agnes Celia Hedwig Fletcher, 90, of Sheridan will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the old Eagles Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. A celebration of life may be at a later date. Mrs. Fletcher died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Carneyville to John P. and Mary B. (Kawulok) Legerski. She attended Acme School, helped take care of her siblings, and eventually went to work cooking for ranches in Sheridan County. She later worked as a nurse's aide at the old Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, then graduated in the first licensed practical nurse class in Sheridan. She continued nursing until 1974, when she retired. She married Roscoe “Curley” Pence in 1935 in Sheridan. He was accidentally killed in August 1949. She married William C. “Bill” Fletcher in August 1959. He died in June 1990. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Wilbur Pence, three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Hull of Sheridan; five brothers, Joe, George, Frank, Ted and Anton Legerski; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Darlene Esther Wood, 75, of Buffalo, a former chef at the Lodore Supper Club in Story, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, in Johnson County Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 13, 1939, in Dillon, Mont., to Carl A. and Lulu Belle (Gilman) Anderson. The family lived in Dillon, Great Falls, Cutbank and Red Lodge, Mont., while her father worked for the telephone company. She graduated from high school in Red Lodge in 1957. She also graduated from Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University-Billings) in 1961, then worked for the school district in Sheridan. She taught at Coffeen School for 30 years. She married Doug Ryan on April 16, 1971. After she retired from teaching, she and Mr. Ryan operated Goose Crique Antiques, vending at area antique shows until health problems forced them to quit. They had booths at Best Out West Antiques and Collectibles for a time. Mrs. Ryan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the former Sheridan Service League, Sheridan County Historical Society, and Trail End Guilds and was a life member of the National Education Association. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, visiting with friends and gardening. Survivors include her husband; three stepchildren, Gail Vanderpoel of Fox River Grove, Ill., Carol Krumm of Sheridan and Kevin Ryan of Bowling Green, Ky.; a brother, Carl Anderson of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Louis C. Reed Jr., 82, of Gillette died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in Pioneer Manor Nursing Home of natural causes. He was father of Robert Reed of Sheridan. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Mr. Reed was born March 21, 1923, in Guthrie, Okla., to Louis and Harriet (Felton) Reed. He grew up on the Reed homestead in Campbell County. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Wyoming. He returned to Gillette to ranch with his parents. He married Ethel Sams on April 6, 1946. They divorced. Mr. Reed worked on Interstate 90 between Buffalo and Gillette and for Farmers Co-op. He also operated the Gulf service station. He married Pat Worley on Nov. 11, 1968. They moved to the Reed homestead, and he worked for McCullough Gas Plant. After retiring, he continued operating the family ranch. He and his wife divorced. He had lived at Pioneer Manor the past three years. He was active in 4-H while growing up. He enjoyed hunting and raising and showing goats. He was a leader for the Wildcat 4-H Club. Survivors include another son, Ralph of Rowlett, Texas; four stepsons, Frank, Nyle and Byron Nelson, all of Gillette, and John Nelson of Riverton; one granddaughter, and 12 step-grandchildren. John E. Hanft

Funeral services for John E. Hanft, 79, of Dayton will be 11 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. The family has requested casual attire, according to the funeral home. A reception at Sheridan Elks Lodge, 45 W. Brundage St., will follow services. Mr. Hanft died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1926, on the family homestead on Sheep Creek, four miles from Dayton, to James Frederick and Grace Short Hanft. He was a 1944 graduate of Dayton High School. He married Helen Lee Davis on Aug. 12, 1946, at First Methodist Church in Hardin, Mont. Both worked for Sheridan Wyoming Coal Co. in Monarch at the time. Shortly after their marriage, the couple bought and rebuilt the Corner Grocery in Dayton. They operated the store for several years. After they sold the store, Mr. Hanft worked in construction, then began ranching on the outskirts of Dayton. The Hanfts left ranching in 1960 and bought Bear Lodge. They also built the original Blue Spruce, now Big Horn Mountain Lodge. They later sold Bear Lodge and bought Twin Buttes cabins and deeded land within the Bighorn National Forest. They sold the cabins and ranched near Banner and Story, raising Charolais cattle. They developed the Hanft and Piney South subdivisions with their son and daughter-in-law, to whom they sold their ranches in 1980. Mr. Hanft and his wife built the Elkhorn Trailer Park in June 1986. They sold the Banner ranch in 1993 and later moved to the Little Tongue Ranch. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Chalfant. Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry of Dayton; a daughter, Sandra Lee Prunty of Sheridan; and four grandchildren. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1940 and worked as a secretary for the State Department until 1945. She moved to Glendale, Calif., then to Hollywood, Calif., where she worked for Litton Industries and Westrex Sound Studio until she retired. She returned to Sheridan in 2000 to be closer to family. A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and travel. She was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Billings was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Arnold, Neb., to Harry and Dora (Moffitt) Leland. When she was 11, the family moved to Big Horn. Mrs. Billings later moved to Sheridan, where she graduated from Sheridan High School. She attended nursing school for three years. She married John K. Billings in the early 1930s. She moved to to New Salem in 2003 to be closer to her daughter. She enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening and sewing. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Berneice Billings. Leonard L. Reed

Memorial services for Leonard L. Reed, 77, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Mr. Reed died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006. He was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Hutchinson, Kan., to Elmer Lewis and Elsie Kathryn (Weiter) Reed. He married Mae Dean Archer on July 20, 1946. They divorced. He worked in the oil fields as a tool pusher for most of his life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, dancing, and playing cards, especially pinochle. He was a musician and an avid reader. He was preceded in death by brothers Gary, Jim and Vic and a sister, Jean. Survivors include five children, Leonard Jr., Lonnie, Randy and Connie Bason, all of Sheridan, and Doug of Grand Junction, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Luckett was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Foster, Mont., to William B. and Mabel Grace (Morgan) Luckett. He grew up near Wyola, Mont., and farmed and ranched there for many years. He attended school in Lodge Grass, Mont. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army. He served from 1943-46 in New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines. His battalion landed in the Philippines just ahead of Gen. MacArthur. He was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge. He worked at Sheridan VAMC until 1978, when he retired. He enjoyed being in the mountains and hunting and fishing in the Big Horns and Yellowstone National Park. He was preceded in death by six sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Lewis of San Diego; a son, William B. of Wamsutter; a sister, Fran Williams of Fresno, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

 

Malcolm L. `Bud' Campbell

Memorials services for Malcolm L. “Bud” Campbell, 86, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Feb. 11 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Todd L. Fisgus

Former Sheridan resident Todd L. Fisgus, 31, of Livingston, Mont., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at his residence. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service was Friday at the Best Western Sheridan Center. Mr. Fisgus was born July 6, 1974, in Denver to Douglas L. Fisgus and Barbara C. (Drake) Fisgus. He attended schools in Aurora, Colo., before moving to Wyoming. He was a 1993 graduate of Tongue River High School. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He played various musical instruments, including the guitar and violin. He also enjoyed the outdoors, riding his bike, hiking and the mountains. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Darrell Drake. Survivors include his father of Centennial, Colo.; his mother of Billings; a brother, Craig D. of Sheridan; paternal grandparents Fred and Eileen Fisgus of Tucson, Ariz.; and maternal grandmother Velma Drake of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy.

James `Matt' Davis

Sheridan-native James “Matt” Davis, 28, Bellingham, Wash., died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, in Bellingham from injuries received in an automobile accident. Visitation is 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, the Rev. Stephen Anderson officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born July 15, 1977, in Sheridan to Tommy and Mary (Womack) Davis, he grew up and attended Sheridan schools graduating in 1994. He then moved to Seattle, where he worked as a construction carpenter. He later moved to Bellingham and was working for Walker Construction at the time of his death. Mr. Davis belonged to Grace Baptist Church in Sheridan and was an avid snowboarder. He also liked skateboarding and electronics and especially enjoyed spending time and playing video games with his 5-year-old son, Drew Aidan. He was the fiance of LaDonna Owens of Bellingham. His grandparents preceded him in death. Survivors include his parents of Sheridan; his son of Bellingham; three brothers, Terry, Larry, and Roger Davis of Sheridan; one aunt; two uncles; one niece; one nephew; and numerous cousins. Thomas D. Hammond

Thomas Dean Hammond, 86, Sheridan, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Sheridan Masonic Temple, 109 S. Gould St., led by officers of Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43. A reception at the temple will immediately follow. Born Oct. 26, 1919, in Sheridan to Dean and Cora (Hughes) Hammond, he grew up on the Fryberger 4H Ranch on Soldier Creek. He attended a one-room school on Soldier Creek Road through grade eight and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940. He played saxophone for dances for more than 50 years and sang and played in King Davis' Dance Band from 1952 to 1980. He married Florence Virginia Baker on April 20, 1940, in Sheridan. She died in August 1996. Mr. Hammond worked at Montana-Dakota Utilities from 1941 to 1982 serving as electric superintendent since 1950. He served in the Army's 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. A 50-year member of Sheridan Masonic Lodge 43, he also belonged to Kalif Shrine and Shrine Brass Band of Sheridan for more than 40 years, Rotary International from 1950 to 1982, Sheridan Elks Lodge, and American Legion. He served on the Sheridan County Fair Board. One of his proudest accomplishments was his cabin on Big Willow Creek in the Big Horn Mountains. He bought the cabin in 1960 and remodeled it over the next 30 years. After retiring, he and his wife spent many years traveling in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with their Airstream trailer. Survivors include a son, Robert Hammond of Denver; a daughter, Nancy Mrvos of Sheridan; two sisters, Geraldine Irwin of Denver and Josephine House of Riverton; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in Sheridan Masonic Cemetery. Memorials may benefit Shrine Children's Travel Fund, Box K, Sheridan, WY 82801. June Juanita Lobdell

Family graveside services for June Juanita Lobdell, 92, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery in Casper with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Mrs. Lobdell died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Lobdell was born June 2, 1913, in Springfield, Mo., to Jesse and Mary (Cavender) Smith. She attended Springfield Teacher College and was a cheerleader. She married Don M. Lobdell on June 3, 1938. They lived in Casper from 1938-1953, when they moved to La Jolla, Calif. Mrs. Lobdell taught physical education at Casper Junior High School for three years. After the family moved to La Jolla, she worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for four years. The family moved to Red Bluff, Calif., in 1972. Mrs. Lobdell worked in the welfare office there. She retired in 1975. The family moved to Pinehurst, N.C., in 1984 and to Sheridan in 1994. Mrs. Lobdell enjoyed skiing, golf , square dancing, and trips to the Pacific, Mexico, Europe, the Bahamas, New Zealand and Hong Kong. She helped her husband in his business ventures. She was a former Daughter of the Nile, a member of the Boots and Spurs Club and a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Lenzner and Elsie Jane Smith. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Donna Kuehne; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
