Doris E. Davis, 75, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Davis was born Jan. 18, 1926, in East Grand Forks, Minn., to Thomas and Ida (Krese) Jackson. She grew up on the familys farm and graduated high school in East Grand Forks. She married Robert Davis Jan. 18, 1947, in Detroit Lakes, Minn. They lived in various places, and she worked as a bank teller. They came to Sheridan in 1981. Mrs. Davis volunteered as a precinct worker for elections here. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and crocheting. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; two sons, Robert Davis Jr. of Helena, Mont., and Barry Davis of Topeka, Kansas; a sister, Carol Dexter; and one granddaughter. Karen I. Portwood, 56, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Theresa R. Metzger, 87, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 24 2001, at her home. Viewing is 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Barry Benth officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Metzger was born Oct. 3, 1913, in Glen Ullin, N.D., to Nikolaus and Elizabeth (Hermes) Steckler. She grew up and attended schools in Glen Ullin. She married Jake Metzger there Sept. 24, 1934, and they moved to Sheridan in 1943. She worked at Stevens Fryberger, then managed Sweetbriar until she retired in 1980. She was active in the community, including volunteer work at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, Heritage Towers and the hospital. She was president of the Elks Does #127 in 1995 and was very active in the polka club, which she helped found in 1985. She enjoyed dancing, traveling, growing roses and being with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1976; a son, Ronald; and five brothers and sisters. Survivors include a son, Gerald J. of Story; a daughter, Sandra Kay Benth of Sheridan; a brother, Paul Steckler of Wilton, N.D.; two sisters, Rose Happ of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Pauline Sene of Jamestown, N.D.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Lynne Ann Collins, 45, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Worship Center with the Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ms. Collins was born Nov. 15, 1955, in Joliet, Ill., to Louis and Bernadine (Lang) Collins. She grew up and attended schools, including college, in Illinois. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Arizona (Tucson) Law School in 1988. She came to Sheridan in 1991 and joined the law firm of Yonkee and Toner. She operated Gateway Mediation from 1997 until she became law clerk for Judge John Brackley. She attended Bethesda Worship Center. She enjoyed reading, going to movies, the mountains, doing needlework and her dog, Carly. Survivors include a daughter, Jessica Boe of Aurora, Ill.; her father and stepmother, Louis and Lois Collins of Shorewood, Ill.; her mother and stepfather, Bernadine and Richard Becker of Minooka, Ill.; two sisters, Deborah Duggins of Morris, Ill., and Denise Millsaps of Minooka; two stepbrothers, Rick and Ron Smith, both of Joliet; a stepsister, Cindy Simon of Crete, Ill.; a grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Delmar T. Highstreet, 93, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Highstreet was born June 3, 1907, in Chancellor, S.D., to Henry and Minnie (Krull) Hoogastraat. He grew up and graduated high school in Hurley, S.D. He worked on a ranch near Gillette and part-time for the railroad. Mr. Highstreet married Imogene Lough April 12, 1935, in Hardin, Mont. They came to Sheridan where he worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad and was engineer on the last passenger train into Sheridan and Billings. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a daughter, Delene Legband of Billings; a brother, Bill Hoogastraat of Anoka, Minn.; two sisters, Leona Hanson of Millbank, S.D., and Betty Barr of Ortonville, Minn.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Marvin N. Jones, 93, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home, and Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory in Casper is handling arrangements there.
Elizabeth E. Landeck, 68, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Viewing will be Monday from 9 a.m. until funeral service at 2 p.m. at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. The Rev. William Heine will officiate. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Ms. Landeck was born March 18, 1932, in Gillette to Adam and Edna (Ertman) Landeck. She grew up on the ranch north of Gillette. The family moved to Clearmont in 1950. She lived on the ranch at Clearmont until 1990 when she had an accident. After a stay in the hospital, she lived in Sheridan Manor. She enjoyed animals, especially horses and horseback riding. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Karl. Survivors include two brothers, William and Paul, both of Clearmont; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Grace Marie McConaughy, 92, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peters Episcopal Church with Father David Duprey and the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. In accordance with her last wishes, Mrs. McConaughy was cremated, and cremains will be buried next to her husband in the Elks Cemetery in Sheridan. A luncheon at 1 p.m. in the Story Womens Club will follow. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. McConaughy was born Nov. 19, 1908, in Iowa to Harry and Maud Campbell. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 2 years old. She graduated from Sheridan High School at the age of 16 and a year later married Vivian Cooper. She spent most of her working years at Ernsts Saddle Shop in Sheridan. She married Bob McConaughy in 1950 and moved to Rosebud Lane in Story. She was an active bowler and golfer, loved to camp and pack in the mountains and was a member of the Story Womens Club. She loved to sew and quilt, had a passion for world travel and enjoyed reading novels and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1975; a son, Jimmie Cooper in 1988; a grandson, Gregory Cooper in 1963; three sisters, Helen, Mildred and Frances; and a younger brother, Jim Willard. Survivors include two granddaughters, a great-grandson and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Story Womens Club in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Raymond R. Roth, 58, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. A Rosary service will be 7 p.m. tonight at Holy Name Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. American Legion Post No. 7 and the Wyoming National Guard will perform military honors. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Roth was born Dec. 5, 1942, in Dickinson, N.D., to Clara Beta (Kessel) and Joseph George Roth. He enlisted in the United States Army Sept. 13, 1962, and served during the Vietnam era, until his discharge Sept. 12, 1964. He married Barbara E. Voiles Feb. 12, 1966, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan. He was an avid reader and collected books of all types. He taught himself to repair and build machines and equipment. He enjoyed tilling and plowing and target shooting and collected firearms. He was a welder, using his skills to build conical statues. Survivors include his wife and daughter, Deborah Roth, both of Sheridan; a son, Joseph Roth of Castle Rock, Colo.; a daughter, Karla Mallo of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; two sisters, Caroline Zachmeier and Jeanette Heck, both of Mandan, N.D.; a brother, James, of Gillette; and one granddaughter. Sheridan native Barry B. Walker, 56, of Coeur dAlene, Idaho, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur dAlene. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will be noon-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until noon Saturday at English Funeral Chapel. Mr. Walker was born July 24, 1944, in Sheridan to Harvey and Ruth (Spracklen) Walker. He married Betty Baker July 21, 1967, in Sheridan. He was a veteran of Vietnam. He moved to Coeur dAlene in 1986 from Livingston, Mont. Mr. Walker worked for Safeway stores from 1964-97. He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, the Coeur dAlene Bow Hunters Association and the Coeur dAlene Public Mens Golf League. He was preceded in death by his wife, in April 1999, and a grandson, Ryan Curry last year. Survivors include two daughters, Janet Curry of Post Falls, Idaho, and Susan Walker of Coeur dAlene. ESCONDIDO, Calif. Alex Loeber, 87, of Escondido died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 at his home. Memorial services were 11 a.m. Monday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Escondido. Graveside services will be this summer in Sheridan where one of his sons lives. Mr. Loeber was born July 31, 1913, in Russia. The family moved to the United States that same year. He married Millie Kreger in Hardin, Mont., March 22, 1936. He lived in Wyoming and Montana 43 years, working as a cowboy, farmer and rancher. He moved to California in 1956, working as a carpenter and contractor until retirement in 1973. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard of Sheridan and Wayne of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Beverly Stone of Reno, Nev., and Sandy Moddejonge of Escondido; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Sheridan native Helen Louise Martin, 89, died
Feb. 12, 2001, at the Valley Care Center in Okanogan, Wash.

Interment will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Martin was
born Dec. 19, 1911, in Sheridan to Joseph and Theresa Zowada. She
attended Sheridan High School. She married Frank Martin, and they
moved to Washington state. They divorced in 1964. She worked for
the U.S. Forest Service for 20 years and also worked for the
Growers Credit Union. She spent most of her life in the
Okanogan Valley. She was preceded in death by her parents;
sisters Stephanie, Anna and Ludine; brothers Joseph and Emil; and
a daughter, Rosemarie. Survivors include a son, Kenneth of Twisp;
three brothers, Raymond Zowada of Coulee Dam, Henry Zowada of
Casper and George Zowada of Cheyenne; three grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American
Heart Association.

David Eckert
David J. Eckert, 80, of Topeka, Kansas, died
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at a hospital there. He was father of a
Sheridan County man. Funeral service was 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9,
at the Mausoleum Chapel at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town
Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Eckert was born Nov.
13, 1920, to David John and Olive Knox Eckert. He lived in Topeka
his entire life. He was a World War II veteran and a retired
rural mail carrier. Survivors include a son, James D. Eckert of
Banner; a daughter, Rebecca Kabage of Fort Collins, Colo.; a
brother, Frank, of Abilene, Kansas; a sister, Marilyn Christner
of Abilene; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

BUFFALO Former Sheridanite Doris Marie Peterson, 87, of Buffalo died Wednesday at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Buffalo with Father Steve Samples officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with private family graveside services. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Sunday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Peterson was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Garrett and Ida Councell. She graduated from Western Michigan University High School there and went to work for Sutherland Paper Company. She married Robert E. Stohrer Jan. 1, 1935, in Kalamazoo, and they lived there until 1951 when they moved to Sheridan. She worked for the Farmers Home Loan Administration. Mr. Stohrer died in 1961, and she moved back to Kalamazoo. She later worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital of Battle Creek, Mich., until 1973 when she retired. She married Roy Peterson in Kalamazoo in February 1965. He died in 1985. She moved to Buffalo in 1987 to be near her son and his family. She was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church where she was treasurer of the womens auxiliary and taught Christian education classes. She was a past member of the Kalamazoo Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Buffalo Senior Center and AARP and was a volunteer at the Buffalo YMCA and the Amie Holt Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a sister, Laura Towne; and a brother, Chuck Councell. Survivors include one son, Joe Stohrer of Buffalo; two brothers, Herb Councell of Kalamazoo and Jack Porter of Fort Wayne, Ind.; three sisters, Eva Badger, Elenore Smith and Mary Lou Peck, all of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Thomas J. Hansen, 72, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Hansen was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Shawno, Wis., to Thomas and Alice (Kehoe) Hansen. He graduated high school in Shawno and served in the U.S. Army. He married Evon Peterman in the early 1950s in Wisconsin. They moved to Sheridan soon after marriage, and he worked at several jobs including Safeway, the city police department, Champion Funeral Home and Metz Beverage. Evon died in 1971. Mr. Thomas married Ethel Reed March 16, 1972, in Sheridan. He worked at Spring Creek Coal and, later, Decker Coal as a security guard. He retired in the early 1980s. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge #43, Kalif Shrine, Eagles and Elks Lodge #520. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Schultz and Marge Schultz. Survivors include his wife, Ethel, of Sheridan; four sons, Jeff Hansen of Billings, Doug Hansen of Casper, Robert Reed of Rapid City and Ralph Reed of Dallas; an adopted daughter, Linda Cook of Sheridan; a sister, Jean Hanson of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to benefit the First Christian Church.
DAYTON Grace E. Artist, 84, of Dayton died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. June Barker, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at
Belle Fourche (S.D.) Health Care Center.
Viewing will be 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries
Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the
Elks Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Barker was
born June 5, 1920, in Upton to Morton and Leeva (York) Dare. She
grew up on the family homestead between Upton and Newcastle,
attending country school and school in Newcastle. She worked at a
waitress in Newcastle before moving to Rapid City, S.D., where
she met Robert L. Barker. They were married in Sheridan and lived
here until he became ranch manager for the Bar E Ranch in Dayton.
They lived in Dayton 10 years then moved around Wyoming, Idaho
and Montana while he worked construction. They returned to
Sheridan where Mrs. Barker continued to work as a waitress until
she retired at the age of 76. She moved to Whitewood, S.D. in
July 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors
include three sons, Darryl of Sheridan, James of Whitewood and
Robert of Whitefish, Mont.; two brothers, Ray O. Dare of Athol,
Idaho, and Ivan Dare of Roy, Utah; nine grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Whitewood Fire
Department Medical Unit or the Whitewood Presbyterian Church.

Margaret Champion Kirk, 82, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will be at the church after the service. Burial will be in the Elks Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Kirk was born May 4, 1918, to Sheridan pioneers Charles and Anna Champion. She was raised in Sheridan, spending her summers at the family cabin in Story. She attended Linden, Central and Hill schools, graduated from Sheridan High School and Stephens College and attended the University of Wyoming. She married Percy B. Kirk in 1941 in a ceremony conducted in the drawing room of Champion Funeral Home. She was an active member of P.E.O., Chapter AM, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Colonial Dames, a board member of Heritage Towers, a member of the Genealogy Society of Sheridan and served as chair of the Governors Committee on Aging. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, Mervin. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Forister of Loveland, Colo.; two sons, Stuart of Santa Fe, N.M., and Pat of Gillette; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Former Sheridan resident Earl Calvin Onkka, 72, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, in Sparks, Nev. Funeral service was 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Waltons Funeral Home in Sparks. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Onkka was born July 21, 1928, to David Carl and Syma A. Onkka in Detroit, Mich. The family moved to Palmer, Alaska, in 1935 as part of 250 families sent by the government to open up the Matmuska Valley. Mr. Onkka lived in Sheridan from 1954-1968. He was a lifetime member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge #520. He moved to California in 1968 and to Sparks in 1990. He was a truck driver 51 years and was employed by Interstate Distributing Co. of Sparks. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Palmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Sparks; a daughter, Reha M. Alexander of Corona, Calif.; a son, Richard L. Onkka of Tacoma, Wash.; two stepsons, Thomas M. McMaken of Kalispell, Mont., and Robert M. Page, 70, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Wyoming Medical
Center in Casper.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. today at the Adams Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Karen Miers officiating. Burial was in
Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Mrs. Page was born
Aug. 29, 1930, in Geneseo, Ill., to Safford and Ethel Fairlie.
The family moved to Buffalo where she graduated in 1948 from
Johnson County High School. After receiving an associates
degree in fashion merchandising from Stephens College in
Columbia, Mo., she worked for a time for Stevens Fryberger in
Sheridan. She married Russell Page in October 1951 in Buffalo.
After they divorced in 1966 she worked at the Fabric Center then
at Buffalos First National Bank until she retired in 1982.
She lived at Amie Holt Care Center from 1997 until August last
year when she moved to Casper to be closer to her daughter. She
was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was
preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tad Fairlie.
Survivors include a son, John of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a daughter,
Tracee Anderson of Bar Nunn; four grandchildren; and one

Mrs. Robinson was born March 9, 1930, in Sheridan to James and Olga (Lenz) Mitchell. She graduated high school in Clearmont. She moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the Pentagon two years, then moved to Denver and attended college. She worked for C.F.&I. as executive secretary until she returned to Sheridan in 1957. She married George Robinson in Sheridan in April 1957. She worked for Redle, Yonkee & Arney Attorneys as executive secretary then worked for the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. She retired Dec. 31, 1999. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Daughters of the Nile and a life member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Laureate Kappa Chapter. She was the chapters Valentine Queen and Woman of the Year. She loved flowers, reading and traveling and especially loved her cats. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; and two sons, Michael of Craig, Colo., and Patrick of Seattle, Wash. Robert B. Fuller, 46, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Fuller was born Oct. 17, 1954, in Troy, N.Y., to Marguerite Lillian (Spotten) and Nelson Harold Fuller. He attended school in Troy. He won ribbons for downhill skiing in high school. He joined the Army after high school, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a veteran of Vietnam. He moved to Colorado and spent several years raising timber wolves. He later moved to Sheridan where he met his fiance, Alisa Good. He had a special fondness for dogs, especially huskies and German shepherds. He loved rock and roll music. He loved to hunt and fish, and he and Alisa enjoyed fishing together and arranging silk flowers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Fuller Jr. Survivors include his parents; four brothers, Daniel, Dennis, Ronnie and Dave; and a sister, Diane Donlon.
Charlie Glenn Anderson, 84, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Sioux Valley Hospital. Visitation was to be 1-5 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home of Sioux Falls. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Mr. Anderson was brother of two Sheridan County residents. He was born June 25, 1916, in ONeill, Neb., to Glen and Mary (Wrede) Anderson. He moved to Wyoming in the 1940s. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served in the 106th Infantry as staff sergeant in Ardennes, Germany and Normandy in World War II. He earned Expert and Combat Infantry badges, the American Theatre Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, good conduct medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with three bronze stars and a Purple Heart. He served until May 4, 1946. He married Delores Kosel April 10, 1951. They moved to Kansas where he worked in the transportation department for the Civil Service at Fort Leavenworth until retirement in June 1973. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1984. He worked at various places in the Empire Mall. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 56, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Association of Retired People. Survivors include his wife, of Sioux Falls; a son, Marvin of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Glenn Jiggs Anderson of Parkman; and two sisters, Helen Bard of Sheridan and Betty Smith of Centerview, Mo. John E. Kawamoto, 78, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Mr. Kawamoto was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Dietz to Timothy and Anna (Blanski) Kawamoto Sr. He grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan and worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad until he enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. He returned to Sheridan and Burlington Northern after the war. He married Marjorie Ann Smith in 1954. They were later divorced. He went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in 1957 and worked until 1987 when he retired. He was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and Bronco football and always attended Tongue River football games. Survivors include two sons, Michael of Wyoming and Gary of Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Elaine Norris of Sparks, Nev.; a brother, George Raymond of Sheridan; two sisters, Edith Vine of Sheridan and Grace Kawamoto of Santa Rosa, Calif.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Vedova was born April 29, 1904, in Newark, N.J. She moved to Roundup, Mont., at age 5, and attended school there until 1924 when she went to MPhail Music School in Minneapolis. She graduated in violin and voice. She went to Rome in 1925 and studied two years under noted opera star Terrazini. She returned to Roundup and married E.G. Vedova, D.D.S., in 1927. They were avid golfers and charter members of the Pine Ridge Golf Course. Dr. Vedova died in 1965. Mrs. Vedova was a member of St. Benedicts Church 15 years and of the American Legion Auxiliary in Roundup. She moved to Sheridan in 1980 to be near her daughters. She was a member of Chapter AM P.E.O., St. Francis of Assisi Circle and Holy Name Catholic Church here. Her interests included music, hand work and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Bob Weber, and a granddaughter, Julie Weber Treitler. Survivors include two daughters, Rose Marie Nicholson and Mitzi Weber, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a niece. He graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the SeaBees during World War II in the Aleutians and, later in the Mariannas in the Pacific. After the war, he attended Farragut College in Idaho and the University of Wyoming. He married Shirley Logan in 1950 in Billings. He founded the Carroll Land Company, retiring in 1988. He was active in several fraternal and civic organizations and took special pleasure in serving as a trustee for Sheridan College during the colleges first building phase on the present campus. He was a strong supporter of the 4-H and served as a leader for many years. Survivors include his wife, of Ranchester; six sons, Kim of Hulett, Duff of Huntsville, Ala., Sean and Andy, both of Ranchester, Chad of Rapid City and Nathan of Parkman; a daughter, Lisa Carroll of Ranchester; five brothers, Don and Neal, both of Sheridan, Melvin of Riverton, Gerald of Buffalo and George of Greeley, Colo.; seven sisters, Rachel Terry, Lluada Larsen, Sylvia Daley, Docia Hunter and Lilas Cox, all of Sheridan, Ella Krull of Fairbault, Minn., and Bea Hannon of Hot Springs, Mont.; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. LODGE GRASS, Mont. James Drake, 70, of Lodge Grass died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, in the Big Horn County Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place in the Bullis Mortuary-Eastern Montana Crematory. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Interment of the ashes with military honors will follow in the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Cemetery. Mr. Drake was born June 23, 1930, in Crow Agency, Mont., to William and Maude Jones Drake. He was educated in the Hardin, Mont., area. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1947. He married Margaret Nepper Aug. 25, 1957, in Hardin. The couple made their home in Lodge Grass. He worked at the Custer (now Little Big Horn) Battlefield National Cemetery, Fox Oil Company and various farms and ranches before going into a 30-year career in construction. He retired in 1996. He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Barry; and two brothers, Ira and Howard. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. McPherson was born July 15,
1921, in Wray, Colo., to Earl and Lena Buchanan. She attended
school in Wray and graduated Yuma County (Colo.) High School in
1938. She received a degree in nursing from St. Anthony Hospital
School of Nursing in Denver. She married Morris Maag in Denver in
1944. He was killed in action during World War II. Mrs. McPherson
married Glenn Sorenson in 1947 at Lowery Air Force Base. They
divorced in 1963. She worked as a registered nurse in Long Beach,
Calif., and the Sheridan VA Medical Center for 32 years. She
married Ray McPherson in 1967, and they made their home in
California and Wyoming. She retired from nursing in 1974. She was
a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her
husband, in 1977, and by her parents. Survivors include two sons,
Brett and Jeff Sorenson, both of Arvada; a sister, LaVonne Darden
of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren; four

She moved to Sheridan and was employed for many years at Brouillettes Furniture Store. She returned to Big Horn after retirement. She married Richard E. Marquess June 1, 1974, in Big Horn. They moved into Westview Health Care Center in 1995. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in Wyoming and Pi Beta Phi college sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1998; a son, Noel J. Hicks; a sister, Beth Wood Dunlap; and a brother, Thomas Chip Wood. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Barney Cox of Chandler, Ariz.; two granddaughters; a grandson; two great-grandsons; and her caregivers for the past 25 years, nephew and niece, Dick and Nancy Marquess of Big Horn. Dorothy P. Shreve, 64, of Sheridan died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, in her home after a nine-month fight with cancer. Viewing will be 11-11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the LDS Church, preceding services at noon with Dr. Scott Bateman officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Shreve was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Sheridan to Harry and Margaret (Miesen) Stroup. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She eloped with John R. Shreve Nov. 5, 1952, and they were married in Gillette. They lived on the Bosler Ranch on the Little Horn River above Wyola where he had been working for several years. She worked by her husbands side, and they worked on different ranches in Montana and Wyoming, including Eatons for 14 years. They had several ranching operations in Big Horn County, Mont. They later operated the I-90 Sinclair in Sheridan for 14 years. Mr. Shreve retired in 1996, and Mrs. Shreve ran the Sinclair station until April last year. She loved her grandchildren and spent time reading, playing games and taking them on outings. She loved flowers, wind chimes, gardening and her yard. She also liked to crochet. She was a member of the LDS Church. They were sealed in the Billings LDS Temple Feb. 5, 2000. She was preceded in death by her father; a daughter, Susan Adamson; a younger sister, Eileen; and a brother, Harold. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a son, John Shreve of Seattle; her mother, Margaret Stroup of Sheridan; three brothers, Ray and Jack Stroup of Sheridan and Ned Frank Stroup of Gillette; a sister, Alice Fisher of Garfield, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She married Major Buell May 25, 1944, in Sheridan, and they made their home on the Buell homestead ranch on Shell Creek until 1973 when they retired and moved to Buffalo. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church, a charter member of the Piney/Shell Creek Homemakers Club, the Johnson County Historical Society and Friends in Council. She loved reading, tending her flowers and helping neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and three brothers. Survivors include a son, David Buell of Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Margaret Nunn of Gillette and Catharine Banks of Cheyenne; and five grandchildren. Elizabeth J. Hansen, 88, of Sheridan died
Thursday, Feb. 1, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral service will be 2

Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Hansen was born Nov. 5, 1912, in
Englewood, Colo., to Joseph and Bertha (Hunter) Strong. She grew
up in Nebraska and Wyoming, graduating from Natrona High School
in Casper. She graduated from nursing school in Sheridan. She
married Arthur Hansen Oct. 6, 1938, in Story. After raising her
family, she returned to private duty nursing, then worked in
pediatrics at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County until she
retired in 1984. She was a member of the Wyoming Nurses
Association and the Theater Guild. She enjoyed reading and
traveling and loved her pet dogs and cats. Survivors include two
sons, Jack and George Hansen, both of Sheridan; a daughter, Ann
Dexter Voth of Casper; five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.

Mary A. Marshall, 91, of Sheridan died Thursday,
Feb. 1, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation
has taken place. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs.
Marshall was born March 3, 1909, in Vermont to Wilma (Smith) and
Pearl Langdell, a legislator and farmer. She graduated from
Johnson (Vermont) State Teachers College in 1928. She
married Dana Marshall July 1, 1933, in Johnson, Vermont. She was
employed as a teacher in a one-room school in Pleasant Valley and
Rabbit Hollow, Vermont. The family lived in Northfield, Vermont,
from 1942-62 then in Prescott, Ariz., from 1965-80 when they
moved to Sheridan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers and a
sister. Survivors include two sons, John of Sheridan and Dennis
of Prescott Valley; and two daughters, Priscilla Coburn of
Monument, Colo., and Marianne Vendela of Chandler, Ariz.

The family moved to Cheyenne in 1927. He went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad at age 17. He married Mary K. Viox July 1940. During World War II, he was an Army master sergeant and a sergeant major of the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion. He was very active in veterans organization after the war, especially the American Legion. He was legislative liaison for the National American Legion office to the Veterans Affairs Committee of the Congress. He was also a charter member of the National World War II Memorial organization. He served on the Wyoming Recreation Commission from 1976-1986. He was delegated to secure funds for the permanent Medal of Honor monument at the Freedom Foundation Memorial in Valley Forge. He promoted the establishment of the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery in Casper. He will be interred there. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Venus, and one grandchild, Shawn Schwope. Survivors include his wife; four children, Michael of Lovell, Fachon Wilson of Sheridan, Carnille JoosLione, Basalt, Colo., and Muriel Connolly of Wheatland; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

STORY Mel Conraads, 52, of Story died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peters Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey and the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Conraads was born Oct. 21, 1948, in Ortonville, Minn., to Harold and Gail (Evers) Conraads. He grew up in Minnesota and South Dakota, graduating from Ortonville High School and Moorhead State College in Minnesota. He moved to Sheridan in 1971. He married Shannon Evers Feb. 18, 1978, in Johnson County. He worked as general manager of Sheridan Motor and Cook Ford before becoming owner and operator of Big Horn Motors. He was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, Masonic Lodge #43 and Kalif Shrine. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing handball. He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, Warner Johnson. Survivors include his wife, of Story; two sons, Daniel and Patrick, both of Story; his mother, of Ortonville; and a sister, LaDona Buescher of Bloomington, Minn. L.A. Bob Quillen, 78, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Quillen was born March 18, 1922, in Marquette, Kan., to William and Alma (Dressler) Quillen. He attended college in Kansas and enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He served on the USS Santa Fe during World War II. He was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in 1945. He attended Harvard Business School while in the service. He spent several years after the war as a district supervisor for the C.R. Anthony Co., then became a sales representative for several clothing companies traveling throughout the West, putting more than a million miles on his blue Mercedes. He married Gwinavere Newell Adams in Douglas in 1966. They moved to Sheridan shortly after. He retired in Sheridan and volunteered for organizations including Sheridan Elks Lodge #520, the Salvation Army, S.C.O.R.E. and Meals on Wheels. He was a past president of the Wyoming Senior Golf Association and a member of the Kalif Shrine and First Presbyterian Church. He was the Sheridan Elks Lodge Elk of the Year 1992-93. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, including his twin, and a sister. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; four stepchildren, Bob Adams of Laramie, Tom Adams of Spokane, Wash., Gwin Johnston of Denver and Mary Apple of Rawlins; a brother, Loren Quillen of Texas; two sisters, Elma Hamilton of Overland Park, Kan., and Mildred Holm of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Frances Z. Marosok, 81, of Sheridan died
Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in Houston.

1919, in Kooi to Nellie and Joseph Zowada. She married Raymond
Romie Marosok April 24, 1941, in Hardin, Mont. She
loved working outdoors in her yard, with her flowers, until a
stroke in 1998. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo and enjoyed
gambling trips with her friends. She was preceded in death by her
husband Jan. 28, 1988. Survivors include three daughters, Delores
J. Madzia of Sheridan, Debra J. Campbell of Hyattsville, Md., and
Darci J. Banas of Houston; two brothers, Joe Zowada of Sheridan
and Larry Zowada of California; four grandchildren; and one
great-grandson. Memorials may be made to stroke research and

Former Sheridan resident Emma Kraft, 85, of Sprague, Wash., died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001. She was born Feb. 19, 1915. Survivors include her husband, Ray F. Kraft, of Sprague; and three children, Ray W. Kraft of Sheridan, Evelyn Tabor of Sprague and Rose Sheehan of Plains, Mont.
Albert P. Schutte, 85, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. Mr. Schutte was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Sterling, Colo., to Joseph and Olympe (LeBlanc) Schutte. He grew up and attended schools in Sterling. After coming to the Sheridan area, he ranched and did various jobs. He married Mary Suel April 1, 1937, in Gillette. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until 1977 when he retired as an engineer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, traveling and playing cards. He was a member of Eagles Lodge #186 and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He loved being with his family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy, and two brothers, Daniel and William. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; four sons, Richard of Arvada, Colo., and Albert, James and Robert, all of Sheridan; three daughters, Rose Kraft, Madonna Rowe and Ruby Gieselman, all of Sheridan; five brothers, Arthur of Greybull, Raymond of Brush, Colo., Bernard of Veradale, Wash., George of Monroe, Wis., and Joseph of Denver; five sisters, Delores Chambers of Anniston, Ala., Margaret Stewart of Denver, Vivian Raines of Tempe, Ariz., Geniveve Dale of Westminster, Colo., and Yvonne Schroer of Littleton, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. BUFFALO Daniel Keleher Ahern, 93, of Buffalo died Monday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2001, at his home. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military graveside services by the VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel and Friday evening at the church. Mr. Ahern was born Feb. 2, 1907, in Charlestown, N.H., to Thomas and Mary Ahern. He and his brothers homesteaded west of Kaycee. He married Mildred Frances Castle June 19, 1933. He taught school in Kaycee and Buffalo 37 years and was principal of Buffalo Junior High School for more than 20 years. He coached basketball and track. He was a World War II veteran, participating in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Palmero, Anzio and the liberation of France, and was recipient of citations including the Legion of Merit, Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star and Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include three sons, Dan and Bill, both of El Paso, Texas, and Tom of Meeker, Colo.; two sisters, Ann Worthley of Charleston, N.H., and Marjorie Linell of Hanover, N.H.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Danny Albert Dan Grooms, 51, of Bozeman, Mont., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel in Bozeman. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Mr. Grooms was born May 26, 1949, in Sheridan to Albert and Dorothy Grooms. He was raised and educated in Beckton and Sheridan. He married Barbara Marie Geertz in Sheridan June 8, 1969. He enjoyed his family, building, mechanics and various activities including snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his 11 years at the Golden Sunlight Mine in Whitehall, Mont. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife and one son, Danny, both of Bozeman; a daughter, Lori Frieling of Mesquite, Nev.; his mother, Dorothy, of Sheridan; a brother, Larry, of Sheridan; three sisters, Linda Codlin of Burlington, Wash., Barbara Hoyt of Leiter, and Teresa Gorzalka of Wyarno; and three grandchildren.
