Clella L. Landis, 89, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan with the Rev. Heather Bartlow officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Landis was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Pottowattamie County, Iowa, to Guy and Grace (Hobson) Lathen. She attended school in Iowa and was a 1932 graduate of Elliott (Iowa) High School. She was a 1934 graduate of the Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Neb. She married Walter E. Landis Oct. 25, 1935. They moved to Sheridan in 1939. She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan, a member of Chapter A.B. of the P.E.O. and a member of the medical and hospital auxiliaries for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking and collecting cookbooks and was an avid walker. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Landis Meyer of Ranchester; three sisters, Cereise Woodworth of Cheyenne, Bette McLuen of Spokane, Wash., and Patricia Thompson of West Des Moines, Iowa; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 2121 Colonial Drive, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Former Clearmont resident Felipa Cortez, 90, of Buffalo, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Johnson County Health Care Center. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in the church with Father Charles Taylor officiating. Graveside services will be in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo, following the Mass. Mrs. Cortez was born May 20, 1912, in Mexico. She moved to Houston as a child and was raised by friends of the family. She married Antonio Cortez in 1925 in Casper. They lived there for a short time until moving to Clearmont, where Mr. Cortez worked for the Lawrence ranch. They moved to Buffalo in 1938. Mr. Cortez died in 1972. Mrs. Cortez enjoyed gardening and crocheting. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Pete. Survivors include two sons, Tony Jr. of Casper and Luciano Mike of Buffalo; two daughters, Mickey Ridgeway of Denver and Julia Pierson of Pennsylvania; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

RANCHESTER Former Ranchester resident Margaret Chance, 95, of Gillette died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson Funeral Home in Gillette with Father Karl Millis of St. Matthew's Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Stevenson Funeral Home. Mrs. Chance was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Patagonia, Ariz., to Francisco and Bennie (Bartlett) Valenzuela. She grew up in Amado, Ariz. She married Bill Chance while working for a ranch there. She later lived in California and Tucson, Ariz., as well as Ranchester. She moved to Gillette in 1997 to be near her daughters. She enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing, camping and fishing. She was preceded in death by 14 siblings; a son, Willy P. Chance Jr.; and an infant son. Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Hopkins and Maureen Laramore, both of Gillette; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Gary Kramer, 61, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Kramer was born April 2, 1941, in Sheridan to Andrew Kramer Jr. and Amelia (Miller) Kramer. He graduated from high school and obtained a bachelor's degree. He joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1964, when he was honorably discharged. He was an electrical engineer for many years. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Eagles Lodge 4169, the Masonic Temple and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Angela; a brother, Richard; and his parents. Survivors include two brothers, Donald of Ranchester and Robert of Sheridan.
William Stanley, 90, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cemetery in Greybull. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Stanley was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Lincoln, Neb., to Orie and Sina (Hausen) Stanley. He entered the Army in 1942 and served until 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He married Eleanor Kopper in 1951 in Red Lodge, Mont. They later lived in Afton before moving to Sheridan in 1980. Mr. Stanley worked as a carpenter for many years until retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and working on cars. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Dorothy Hurst and Edna Stanley; and a brother, Robert. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Stanley of Sheridan; a son, James; and four grandchildren. Elva Maxine Castello, 70, of Moorcroft died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Rock Springs of natural causes. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Moorcroft with Father Karl Millis officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Ken Pitlick officiating. Arrangements are with Stevenson Funeral Home of Gillette. Francis Mickey Pitet, 69, of Basin died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis of cancer. He was brother of Michelle Rosenthal and Larry Pitet, both of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Pitet was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Yankton, S.D., to Dr. Marcel Rene Pitet and Monica (Noonan) Pitet. He cooked in various restaurants in Montana and Wyoming until 1986, when he shattered his leg in a fall. He resided at Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin. He was preceded in death by a sister, Survivors include two other brothers, Roger of Billings and Patrick of Cody. Former Sheridan resident Stella Ann (Romeo) Ridgeway, 88, of Casper died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in the Wyoming Medical Center. Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Casper with Father August Koeune officiating. Mrs. Ridgeway was born Jan. 22, 1915, in Chicago to John and Anna (Szewczyk) Jaskowiak. She was dietician at the Sheridan Veterans Hospital from 1945-51. She married Don W. Ridgeway Feb. 10, 1950, in Sheridan. The family moved to Greybull in 1953 and to Casper in 1957. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Natali Buch Romeo; two brothers, Alexander and Joseph Piasecki; and one grandson. Survivors include her husband of Casper; three daughters, Maryann Cheney of North Plains, Ore., Debbie Cook of Cheyenne and Donna Kane of Casper; three sons, Larry, Randy and Mike, all of Casper; a sister, Leona Piasecki of Medford, Ore.; a brother, George Piasecki of San Diego; 32 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Jean Read, 85, of Lander died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Lander Valley Medical Center. She was mother of Charles Chuck Read of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Burial will be later in the family plot in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lander. Hudson's Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Read was born Dec. 29, 1917, in San Francisco to Waldo H. Hader and Fanita M. (Edwards) Hader. The family moved to Fresno, Calif., then to Wyoming when Mrs. Read was 2 years old. Her grandparents owned and ran the power station that supplied most of the electricity to Lander in those years. Her grandfather, E.D. Edwards, was among those responsible for the Sinks Canyon Dam, and he built the log house that is headquarters of the state park there. Mrs. Read was a 1935 graduate of Lander Valley Vocational High School. She went to work as secretary for attorney P.B. Coolidge and also worked for the Stockgrowers State Bank (now Key Bank) until June 1937, when she married Charles Fentress of Denver. Mr. Fentress died in a truck accident in August 1938. Mrs. Read married Gordon H. Read in October 1940. He died in 1995. Mrs. Read was a 50-year member of Olivet Chapter 3, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of United Methodist Church. She sang in the church choir for 12 years. She also worked in the Thrift Shop, taught Sunday school for several years and served on many church committees. She enjoyed walking and gardening. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter. Survivors in addition to her son include three grandchildren. Laura Iva Hoffer, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Westview Healthcare Center in Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Assembly of God Church in Glendive, Mont., with Pastor Don Fercho officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Memorial Cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is handling arrangements. Mrs. Hoffer was born Sept. 17, 1914, in La Grange County, Ind., to Daniel S. and Mattie (Miller) Nissley. She married Gerald R. Hoffer June 13, 1937, in Nappanese, Ind. They resided many years in Glendive, where Mrs. Hoffer worked as a cook at Dawson County High School. She retired at 77, and they moved to Sheridan in 2000. She belonged to Glendive Assembly of God Church, enjoyed craft work and gardening and was known for her handmade quilts. She was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Nissley, and two sisters, Lena and Lydia. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; five sons, Paul J. of Cottonwood, Ariz., David R. of Anderson, Ind., Daniel L. of Billings, Leo of Sheridan and Quinton J. of Sulphur Springs, Ark.; a sister, Carol Maust of Goshen, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Connie F. Powell, 59, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were this morning at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Inurnment of cremains was in Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City. Kane Funeral Home handled local arrangements, and Osheim-Catron Funeral Home handled arrangements in Rapid City. Mrs. Powell was born Dec. 10, 1943, in Rapid City to Clifford and Ruby (Brunick) Conry. She was a member of Eagles Lodge 186 and president of American Legion Post 7. She was a past leader for American Legion Girls State in South Dakota and Wyoming and was instrumental in starting the Girls State program in American Legion Post 303 in Hermosa, S.D. She enjoyed playing darts, calling bingo, fishing and camping. She worked several years at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and was a secretary at the South Dakota National Guard Camp. She was employed at Sheridan Manor at the time of her death. Survivors include a daughter, Terri Boggs of Pringle, S.D.; a son, Ronald; two sisters, Kittie Ann Johnson of Sheridan and Colleen Faber of Rapid City; a brother, Cliff Conry of Belle Fourche, S.D.; and a special friend, Steve Legerski of Sheridan. Ernest Eugene Fender Sr., 78, of Casper died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper after a short illness. His daughter, Cheryl L. Ackerly, was a resident of Sheridan until three years ago, and Mr. Fender came to Sheridan frequently as part of his job with the Wyoming Employment Commission. Funeral services were Jan. 16 in Highland Park Community Church in Casper. The Natrona County United Veterans Council presented a veteran's farewell at the Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery in Evansville afterward. Mr. Fender was born Nov. 16, 1924, in Tescott, Kan., to Thalia A. and Loren D. Fender. He grew up and attended schools in the Morrison, Colo., area. He attended Baylor University in Texas and Denver University and received degrees at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. He later attended the University of Wyoming to work on his doctorate. He served in the Army during World War II in Europe. He remained in federal military employment in Germany after the war and helped re-establish the German government. He married Esther L. Wisdom Oct. 10, 1949, in Edgewater, Colo. He was an educator in Colorado and Wyoming more than 20 years and was umpire-in-chief of the Central Wyoming Softball Association in Casper more than 10 years. He received the Sam Murphy award from the U.S. assistant secretary of labor and veterans employment and training in 1991 for outstanding service to America's veterans. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and served as state commander of both DAV and VFW. He was preceded in death by a brother, Philip of San Antonio, Texas; and a son, David of Los Angeles. Survivors in additon to his daughter include his wife; three sons Ernest E. Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., Norman L. of Wright and Edwin B. of Casper; a brother, C. Edwin of Eugene, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandsons. Glen Jackson, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Las Cruces, N.M., of natural causes. He was father of Leanne Moss of Sheridan. A memorial service by the family is planned at a later date.

Georgia H. Bilyeu, 93, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral home with Pastor Ken Doolin officiating. Mrs. Bilyeu was born Oct. 31, 1909, in Miles City, Mont., to Frank and Delia (Mahoney) Huss. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 2. She married Clarke E. Bilyeu Nov. 2, 1929, in Hardin, Mont. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and the church's Missionary Society. She was preceded in death by her husband; five sisters, Marie Mollie Fiala, Billie Thomas, Josephine Scott, Leona Hull and Dorothy Lewis; her brother, Frank; and a grandson, Robert Bilyeu. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann Selig of El Paso, Texas; four sons, R. Clark of Williamsburg, Va., Donald of Orion, Ill., James of Berthoud, Colo., and Michael of Las Vegas; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Lawrence A. Stenger, 74, of Story died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and private family memorial services will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date. Interment of cremains will take place in Pennsylvania. Mr. Stenger was born Oct. 5, 1928, in Bethlehem, Pa., to Lawrence and Margaret (Kessler) Stenger. Following high school, he attended trade school and became an oil and gas technician for the Bethlehem area school district. He moved to Story from Pennsylvania 14 years ago to be near his son. He enjoyed flying, restoring automobiles and playing the banjo. He was a member of the Philadelphia String Band, flew remote-control airplanes, was a licensed pilot and built and flew a J-3 Piper Cub. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald. Survivors include special companion Arleen Thompson of Story; three sons, Lawrence Stenger of Bethlehem, Michael of Allentown, Pa., and Brian of Story; two daughters, Stephanie Belsfield of Bethlehem and Brenda Henrechs of Schnecksville, Pa.; two stepchildren, Frank Behum of Bethlehem, and Kathie Powers of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Virginia Crossley of Florida, Elaine Fye and Doloris Hirsch, both of Bethlehem, and Carol Lapinsky of Washington; and two brothers, George and Eugene, both of Bethlehem.
Robert E. Wright, 89, of Evansville died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place and no memorial services will be held. Kane Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mr. Wright was born July 6, 1913, in Aitkin, Minn., to Leo and Edith (Schisler) Wright. He worked as mechanic his entire life, beginning with Spaniel Ford, and went on to build and restore motorcycles as a self-employed mechanic. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a son, Everett, of Evansville; four daughters, Jo Munderovski of Owatonna, Minn., Donna Eye of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Linda Garcea of San Jose, Calif., and Nancy Wright; several grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald of Mendovi, Wis., and Roger Wright of Aitkin; and several nieces and nephews.
John N. Logan, 54, of Gillette, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place and no memorial services will be held. Kane Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Mr. Logan was born June 30, 1948, in Ortonville, Minn., to Robert and Betty (Ell) Logan. After high school graduation, he attended El Camino College in California and the University of Wyoming. He entered the U.S. Army in 1969 and was discharged in 1972. Survivors include two sons, Robert of Las Vegas and Neale of Cedar City, Utah; his parents of Buffalo; three sisters, LeeAnn Moser of Cedar City and Laurie Logan and Lynn O-Gann, both of Buffalo; and a brother, Mike, of Eureka, Calif.
Virginia M. Kubsch, 82, Sheridan, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating, with burial in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Kubsch was born Feb. 7, 1920, in Whitelaw, Wis., to Lauerence and Theresa (Mailand) Kuehnl. She married Erwin Kubsch on Nov. 26, 1940, in Whitelaw. They moved to Sheridan from Omaha, Neb., 17 years ago. She belonged to Holy Name Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Eagles Auxiliary, BPOE Does, and Big Horn Mountain Polka Club. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, bingo, and especially polka dancing and spending time with her family and friends. A sister and brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Donna Shelley and Kathy Kubsch, both of Sheridan, Judith Pester, El Paso, Texas, and Mary Dunbar and Patricia Magni, both of Elkhorn, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren. Josephine F. Fowler, 87, of Sheridan died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Viewing will be until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Burial will in in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Mrs. Fowler was born July 17, 1915, in Choteau, Mont., to Charles and Mary (Kerr) Faunce. She grew up and graduated from high school in Dixon, Mont. She graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in dietary science. She worked for the Public Health Service in Cincinnati, New York, Chicago and Seattle before moving to Denver to work as director of dietary services at St. Luke's Hospital. She married Karl H. Fowler July 5, 1952, in Denver. They moved to Flathead Valley near Kalispell, Mont., after she retired from St. Luke's in 1972. They moved to Sheridan in 1996 to be near their daughter. Mrs. Fowler was a past officer in Alpha Delta PI Sorority and the Colorado Dietary Association. She enjoyed gardening. Her husband preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Schoneman of Sheridan; a brother, Harold Faunce of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sheridan.
Mae Johnson, 84, of Sheridan died Jan. 19, 2003, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Mrs. Johnson was born May 1, 1918, in Sheridan to Peter and Christine Sorensen. She attended school in Sheridan, and married Milton W. Johnson on Oct. 2, 1937, in Sheridan. They owned and operated the Banner Store for 19 years. She retired in October of 1999 after 40 years of service as the Banner Postmaster. She was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan, Banner Women's Club; and the NAPUS (National Association Postmasters of the United States). Her hobbies included gardening. Survivors include three sons, Milton Jr. of Casper, Harold of Sheridan, and Gordon of Prescott, Ariz.; a daughter, Bobbie Stratton of Casper; four grandchildren; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Emmons of Lompoc, Calif.. Anthony C. Tony Schnieder, 78, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned, according to his request. Mr. Schnieder was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Carlyle, Ill., to Anton and Theresa (Diekman) Schnieder. He joined the U.S. Army after graduating from high school and served until 1947, when he was honorably discharged. He married Sue Rogers June 3, 1961, in Casper. They moved to Buffalo in 1968, and he worked for Buffalo Lumber for many years. He had resided at the Sheridan VA nursing facility for about two years. A sister, Carol, preceded him in death. CASPER E.N. Slim Larsen, 83, father of Ricky Larsen of Sheridan, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, in Casper. Services are 2 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Casper. Mr. Larsen was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Wayne, Alberta, Canada, to Hans and Lisa Larsen. = He married Flora Hourt on Sept. 17, 1949, in Casper. He worked as a homebuilder and built his family home of 40 years. After his wife's death in 1990, he joined his companion, Oleta Thomas, to form the Senior Haywire Comedy Team. She survives in Casper. Mr. Larsen loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. His hobbies were inventing, tinkering and rummaging in his garage workshop. He was also an avid crossword-puzzle fan. A sister and three brothers preceded him in death in addition to his wife. Survivors besides his son include four daughters, Jeanne Short, Holyoke, Mass., Peggy Johnson, Ramona, Calif., Shelly Brow, Casper, and Shannon Hatlestad, Casper; a brother, Vern Larsen, of Casper; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Sheridan native Elaine Jean Chutich, 72, of Wilder, Idaho, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, of natural causes at Mercy Medical Center in Nampa, Idaho. Services were Jan. 2 in Homedale, Idaho. Mrs. Chutich was born to Elvin and Helen Ridley in Sheridan, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1948. She worked in Chicago as a registered nurse in hospital obstetric units and later at a doctor's office in Preston, Idaho. She retired to Wilder in 1992 and sold Avon products as a second career. She was an active member of Homedale Presbyterian Church and enjoyed sewing, knitting and yard work. Survivors include her husband, John; three sons, Douglas of Nampa, Mark of Austin, Texas, and Jon of Logan, Utah; a daughter, Dawn, of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Phyllis David, of Sheridan; a brother, Ron Ridley of Dallas; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Henry George Hank Rathjen, 57, of Forsyth, Mont., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, of a massive heart attack. He was father of Beth and Cavin C.J. Rathjen, both of Sheridan. He grew up and attended school in Ida Grove and was active in Boy Scouts and 4-H. He worked as a cattle buyer and truck driver and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, L.J. Rathjen. Kathleen Ella Lamont , 90, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. No services will be held at her request, and her remains will be interred in the Burlington cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. She was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Cheyenne to Ronald Malcom and Mabel Florence Varney Lamont. She graduated from Cheyenne High School, where she was active in sports, music and yearbook editing. She attended the University of Wyoming for one year before the Great Depression. She quit school and went to work in Cheyenne and Denver to support her invalid parents and two brothers. She worked as a supervisor for the Internal Revenue Service in Denver for 37 years before retiring in 1971. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, leatherwork and other crafts. She loved traveling and visiting family and friends, playing the organ and cooking. She lived in Sheridan for three and one-half years, the last two months at Edmonson's Retirement Home. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Keith and Neil, and her friend, Margaret Early, who lived with her for almost 70 years. She is survived by two nephews, Neil Lamont of Sheridan and David (Crockett) Lamont of Worland; and many grandnieces and nephews.

She attended Park College, Parkville, Mo., and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, Minneapolis. She married Bruce Anderson Dec. 20, 1944, in First United Methodist Church, Sheridan. They lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 40 years where she was employed at Stable on the Alley Antiques, as a preschool teacher at Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church, and in the admissions department of St. Lukes Hospital. After retiring, they returned to Sheridan in 1998. She was a member of PEO Chapter GM and Questers in Cedar Rapids and First Presbyterian Church, Sheridan. She loved raising her five children while enjoying cooking, collecting antiques, traveling, and following professional sports, especially golf. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Peter Anderson, Granbury, Texas, Stewart Anderson, Big Horn, and John Anderson, Seattle; two daughters, Kathryn Maack, El Cerrito, Calif., and Christine Anderson Jenkins, Sheridan; one brother, Roderick MacLennan, Bennett, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren. Betty Jean Brantz, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial graveside service at a later date. Mrs. Brantz was born Jan. 8, 1925, in in Clearmont to Jamie (Pete) and Eleanor (Bishop) Redman. She moved at age 4 to Sheridan, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1943 and worked at a Utah arsenal in World War II. She returned to Sheridan and worked as a waitress in various restaurants. She married Paul Brantz July 14, 1946, in Sheridan. They moved to Cheyenne, then returned to Sheridan. They co-owned motels and restaurants in Wheatland, Thermopolis, Sheridan and Casper, semiretiring in 1985. She sang in the Sheridanaires and at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was an active member. She was known as a very religious person who loved her family, making new friends and collecting angels. She enjoyed holiday decorating and playing bingo and cards. She was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister, a grandson and a great-grandson. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; three sons, Steven of Sheridan, Paul E. Winifred Tavegia, 82, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. She was mother of Pat Baker of rural Sheridan. A gathering of family and friends is from 7-9 p.m. today at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle. Mrs. Tavegia was born Nov. 15, 1920, in Warrensburg, Mo., to Oscar and Irene (Richardson) Butcher. The family moved to Osage, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Newcastle High School, then attended Black Hills Teaching College in Spearfish, S.D. She taught elementary school in Osage for three years. She married Merle Tavegia in Hardin, Mont., March 14, 1944. After he was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, they moved to the ranch, where they went into partnership with his dad, Harry. They ranched until Merle's death in 1988. Sheridan native Ferne F. Willey, 88, of Stevensville, Mont., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, Mont. She had lived at the Bitterroot Living Center in Stevensville since June. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday at Champion Funeral Home in Sheridan. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn with Alan Barnett officiating. Mrs. Willey was born July 28, 1914, in Sheridan to Frank E. and Maude (Filmore) Harris. Her family ranched on Wolf Creek, where she attended grade school. She attended Ranchester High School and earned her teaching certificate at Normal School in Billings. She married Jack Willey. They owned several ranches in Montana. They later divorced. She married Jesse Gorman, and they lived on his ranch on lower Prairie Dog. After his death, she moved to the Big Horn area. She was active in the Cattlewomen's organization in Montana and Wyoming. She especially loved Hereford cattle and painted them on items for fund-raisers. She remarried Jack Willey in 1979. They were caretakers for the Park Reservoir for three years. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Merle Shreve, Ruth Harris and Mollie Frye; a brother, Elmo; husband Jack; and two sons, George and Dennis. Survivors include a son, Reid of Corvallis, Mont.; a daughter Edna Madsen, of Ellensburg, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Baumgartner was born June 28, 1906, in Holbrook, Iowa, to Norah (Slattery) Smith and John Joseph Smith. She was 10 when the family headed west and bought Copp's Ranch in Ucross. She finished the ninth grade there. In 1923, the family moved to Power River. She finished high school in Buffalo and attended Heiman's Business College in Sheridan. In 1926, she returned from Casper, where she had kept house for her father after her mother's death. In 1928, she married Henry Baumgartner. They lived and worked with Agnes' father until buying the George Nottingham Ranch, where they raised sheep and cattle for many years. In 1956, the couple moved to Clearmont due to Henry's health. He died in 1959, and Agnes moved to Buffalo in 1978. She enjoyed reading, painting, and cooking for others and was known as a gracious hostess who loved her family. She was preceded in death by a son, James, six sisters and two brothers in addition to her husband. Survivors include sons Tim of Buffalo and Larry of Sheridan; one sister, Mrs. Carl Knudson of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. M.J. Andy Anderson, 78, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing is until 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home and 1-2 p.m. Tuesday in the Latter-day Saints Church in Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Latter-day Saints Church with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Lead, S.D., to Andrew and Rhoda Lucille Anderson. He grew up and graduated from high school in Bell, Calif. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served four years as pharmacist's mate first class. He was discharged with honors. He attended Compton (Calif.) College and the Don Martin School of Radio and Television. He married Glenna M. Twist soon after. They settled in Sheridan in 1980. He produced the Sunday morning Big Band Show on KROE radio and volunteered at the Information Center. He enjoyed painting. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; three sons, Phillip Anderson of Denver, Doug Cazier of Laurel, Mont., and Darrell Cazier of Billings; four daughters, Diana Cook of Billings, Dorothy Hindman of Belgrade, Mont., Cheri McNalley of Tampa Bay, Fla., and Candice Braley of Sheridan; a brother, Harold of Dana Point, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Eleanor L. Shurter, 77, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing is until 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Grace Lutheran Church in Hanna with Pastor William Heine officiating. Burial will be in Hanna Cemetery. Mrs. Shurter was born June 7, 1925, in Ironwood Townships, Mich., to John and Mary (Saari) Kleimola. She grew up and attended schools in Ironwood. She married Frank Shurter in Ironwood Aug. 28, 1943. They moved to Hanna in 1955 and to Sheridan in 1977. Mrs. Shurter was a volunteer caller for blood donations for five years with Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She was a longtime member of the Genealogy Society and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed genealogy, knitting, crocheting, traveling, baking and music. She enjoyed ice skating as a teenager. She was preceded in death by a son, grandson, sister and six brothers. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Frank of Sheridan and Kenneth of Laramie; two daughters, Mary Lothamer and Patricia Pendleton, both of Sheridan; a brother, Frank Kleimola of Jackson, Mich.; two sisters, Minnie Chimento of Bessemer, Mich., and Hilma Carlson of Hanna; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Paul L. McInerney Jr., 76, of Spearfish, S.D., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, after a long illness. His wife is the former Carol Stearns Battenfield of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the 7 Down Arena east of Spearfish. Viewing will be 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday in Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Mr. McInerney was married in 1972 in Sheridan. The couple lived in Spearfish and O'Neill Pass, S.D. Other survivors include two daughters, Lea Stodart of Edgemont, S.D., and Paula Hall of Lead, S.D.; a son, Mike of Gillette; and eight grandchildren. A memorial has been established with arrangements by Fidler Funeral Chapel.

Former Sheridan resident Eldon John Hovelsrud, 73, of Casper died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Casper with Father Roy Baker officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery in Evansville with military honors by the Natrona County United Veterans Council. Viewing is until 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory of Casper. Mr. Hovelsrud was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Meadow Grove, Neb., to Ole and Mary (Dohse) Hovelsrud. He served in the U.S. merchant marine during the 1940s and with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a 1960 graduate of the University of South Dakota (Vermillion) with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He worked as a geologist for Big Horn Coal in Sheridan and later as a geologist for Arch Mineral Corp. and a real estate agent with Century 21 in Casper. He married Lavonne Clements Nov. 26, 1975, in Rawlins. He was a member of Elks, American Legion and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed hunting, reloading and related shooting sports, reading, collecting rocks and listening to music. Survivors include his wife of Casper; six children, Angie Gilbert, Cynthia Goda, Rondi Grauberger, Tamara DeJongh, Dan Clements and Tressa Tystad; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gale Kinzer, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Eagles Section, with Eagles officers officiating. Mr. Kinzer was born Feb. 4, 1914, near Maquon, Ill., to Cary and Mary (Kinnaman) Kinzer. He grew up and attended schools in Illinois. He married Maxine Watkins Jan. 18, 1946, in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Sheridan in 1947. Mr. Kinzer owned and operated a trucking company until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Eagles Lodge 186 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon. Survivors include a stepson, John Landon of Meeteetse; a sister, Glennadean Carol Onion of Biggsville, Ill.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
