Elsie Marie Daly Haack

Elsie Marie Daly Haack, 81, of Spokane Valley, Wash., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, in Orchard Crest Retirement Community. She was sister of Nancy Cossitt of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Hamilton, Mont. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are with Thornhill Valley Funeral Home of Spokane Valley. Mrs. Haack was born Sept. 5, 1922, to George "Shorty" and Iva (Beck) Daly in Sayle, Mont. She grew up on a ranch in Eastern Montana and lived in Montana for 80 years. After graduation, she taught school, first through eighth grades, in a one-room schoolhouse. She married Albert Haack in 1943. Mr. Haack was discharged from the Navy in 1945, and they worked on her parents' ranch until 1950 when they moved to Hamilton. They operated a dairy and farmed for many years. Mrs. Haack was a homemaker and did volunteer work for the Cancer Society and other charities, including her church. She moved to Spokane Valley in 2002 to be near her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1990, and by two sons, George Albert and Glen Carsten. Other survivors, all of Spokane, include a daughter, Cheryal Brown; a son, D. Carter Haack; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 275 Hattie Lane, Hamilton, Mont., or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Walter W. Sullivan

Walter W. Sullivan, 77, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Gifford officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be at a later date. Mr. Sullivan was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Buffalo to Walter C. and Jennie (Yates) Sullivan. He graduated from high school, then enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Rose Bott Sept. 28, 1954, in Billings. He worked for Sheridan County School Districts 1 and 2 and for the U.S. Forest Service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and carpentry. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Kay, of Buffalo. Survivors include a son, Jeff, of Sheridan; three daughters, Angie, Sheri and Dawn, all of Sheridan; and one grandson. Rev. Robert Hodgen

The Rev. Robert Trudel Hodgen, 71, of Sheridan died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a lifelong struggle with coronary disease. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Born March 4, 1932, in Holyoke, Mass., to Olive Frances (Trudel) and Isaac Alexander Hodgen, he graduated from Belchertown (Mass.) High School in 1950 and Amherst College in 1954. He attended Yale Divinity School, graduated from the Episcopal Theological School in 1958 and received his Master of Divinity degree from ETS in 1972. He was ordained June 11, 1958, to the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. He served Saint John's Church in Millville, Mass., and St. James' in Woonsocket, R.I., from 1958-60. He also served parishes in Federal Way, Wash., and Holy Trinity and St. Francis on the Prairie in Gillette from 1964-69. While in Gillette, he also was a disc jockey for KIML-AM Radio. He served at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pierre, S.D., from 1969-76 and at St. Paul's in Vermillion, S.D., where he also was assistant professor of Allied Health Services, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies at the University of South Dakota. He served at St. Paul's in Claremore, Okla., from 1985-1992, when he retired to Belle Fourche, S.D. He moved to Sheridan in 2002 to be closer to family. He was a Master Mason since Sept. 2, 1953. He received a Veterans Medal from the Vernon Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in 2003 for 50 years of membership. He enjoyed painting, playing the piano, the outdoors, writing and reading poetry, lobster, music and theater. Survivors include two daughters, Constance Heuer of Minnetonka, Minn., and the Rev. Cynthia H. Shipley of Sheridan; a brother, David, of Belchertown; two nephews; and one niece. The Robert T. Hodgen Memorial Fund has been established in care of LaDean or Elizabeth at Sheridan State Bank, P.O. Box 6268, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Robert L. Pettit, 70, of Banner died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Sheridan's Westview Health Care Center. At his request, cremation has taken place. Friends may call at Champion Ferries Funeral Home between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Pettit enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include three sons, Emmett and Lindsay, both of Sheridan, and Charles of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Susan Gleason of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

BUFFALO — Opal Phillips, 77, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at her residence. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Margaret Lavonne McNiven

Margaret Lavonne “Vonnie” McNiven, 77, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Hillside Cemetery in Greybull with Bishop Rodney McNiven officiating. Arrangements are with Atwood Family Funeral Directors in Basin. Mrs. McNiven was born May 10, 1926, to A.W. “Bill” and Carrie M. “Peggy” (Sarver) Stricker in Greybull. She graduated from high school there in 1944. She married John Hibbert McNiven Dec. 11, 1945, in Billings. Mr. McNiven was a career member of the Air Force, and the family lived at various bases until he retired. The family made its home in Sheridan. Mrs. McNiven enjoyed the mountains, fishing, hiking and snowmobiling. She was an avid bowler, attending national bowling tournaments and serving as a state officer of the Wyoming Women's Bowling Association for many years. She was a retired federal employee and member of the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 16, 1999. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald M. Schmuck

Brigadier Gen. Donald M. (Buck) Schmuck, 88, of Sheridan and Honolulu died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu. Funeral services will be this spring at Arlington National Cemetery. Gen. Schmuck was born Aug. 16, 1915, on the family farm in Woodford, Ill. He grew up in Denver and on the family ranch near Walden, Colo. He attended the University of Colorado and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1935 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1938 following graduation from the University of Colorado. After basic school, he served as a platoon leader at San Diego Marine Corps Base. He served in the South Pacific with the 2nd Marine Brigade during World War II, seeing action in Guadalcanal, Vella Lavella, and Bougainville as a rifle company commander. He was hospitalized briefly from injuries sustained in Bougainville. He then joined the 1st Marine Division in time for landings on Pelelieu and, later, Okinawa, where he was again wounded in action. He was a lieutenant colonel commanding an infantry battalion training for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He attended the Amphibious Warfare School at Quantico, Va., and the Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., then did a short tour with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., before returning to Quantico as an instructor in the Marine Corps Schools. In 1949 he was ordered to the United Nations Middle Eastern Commission and was active in Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Iraq. He joined the 1st Marine Division at the start of the Korean War in 1950. He was assigned as commander, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines under the regimental command of Col. Chesty Puller. He led the 1st Battalion in action during 1950 and 1951 including the Chosin Reservoir operation and the Spring Counter Offensive. He served as regimental executive through the Summer Offensive. He served with the Fleet Marine Force Pacific at Pearl Harbor after Korea. During that duty, he was charged with producing a number of contingency war plans covering national objectives in Asia, including several locations in Vietnam, and he conducted the in-country reconnaissance required for those plans. In 1959 he attended the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1960 with the rank of brigadier general. He continued to be active in special missions in Central America, Vietnam, and Laos. He completed a Ph.D. in nuclear physics at the University of Colorado-Boulder in the early 1960s. He was a military observer during Desert Storm in February 1991 in the Gulf War. His decorations include the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit with combat V, two Bronze Stars with combat V's, three Purple Hearts, the Air Medal, the Navy Commendation with combat V, the Presidential Unit Citation with five battle stars, the Navy Distinguished Unit medal and numerous foreign decorations and campaign medals. He was active with the Marine Corps League in Wyoming and Hawaii and was a founding member of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club. He purchased the Triangle-S ranch between Buffalo and Sheridan in the 1960s and spent summers at the ranch and winters in Honolulu. Survivors include a brother, retired Cmdr. Carl Schmuck of Anacortes, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Jeanetta Brewer

Jeanetta Jean Brewer, 76, of Anderson, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at her residence after a long illness, according to her family. She was stepmother of Doris Ketcham and Gene, Robert and Jon Brewer, all of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at DeLoose Funeral Home in Anderson. Mrs. Brewer was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Kentucky. She married Ralph E. Brewer Sr. Nov. 23, 1950, in Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters. Survivors include another stepson, Ralph E. Jr. of Sun City West, Ariz.; two daughters, Debbie Joslin and Charlotte Fuller, both of Anderson; two sons, Steve Brewer of Moorsville, Ill., and Larry Brewer of Bakersfield, Calif.; and numerous sisters, brothers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Seton Van Note

Seton “Todd” Van Note, 81, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center. Private family interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. The family will hold memorial services in February in Dallas. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mr. Van Note was born Jan. 13, 1923, in East Orange, N.J., to Charles Harold and Margaret Fox Van Note. He married Ruth Suzanne Robertson in the early 1950s, and they lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for many years. Mr. Van Note owned and operated a swimming pool business. He served in the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division during World War II. He loved all animals. Survivors include two sons, Donald Charles of Longview, Texas, and Christopher Todd of Baltimore; two daughters, Zoe Loyd of Buffalo and Sandra Van Note Johnson of Tyler, Texas; a sister, Pat Sliker of South Carolina; and four grandchildren. Pearl M. Skinner, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. At her request, cremation has taken place. Mrs. Skinner was born March 10, 1925, in Butte, Mont., to Charles and Amanda (Grey) Rowell. She grew up and attended schools in Butte and graduated from Butte High School. She moved to Oakland, Calif., after high school and worked for a liquor importer as a bookkeeper. She married Warren Skinner Dec. 24, 1948, in Oakland. The family moved to San Rafael, Calif., in 1952 and to Butte in 1955. Mrs. Skinner worked for various businesses and raised her family. The family moved to Glendive, Mont., in 1958 and to Cody in 1967, where Mrs. Skinner worked at the Green Gables Inn and was a reservation clerk for the Yellowstone Park Co. The family moved to Sheridan in 1972. Mrs. Skinner was a member of First United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing golf and working with ceramics and was an avid collector of plates, cups, bells and Avon bottles. Two sisters and one daughter preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; a son, Charles of Elephant Butte, N.M.; a daughter, Nancy Mathis of Missoula, Mont.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. LeRoy C. Fry

LeRoy Clayton Fry, 66, Sheridan, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Arthur Maendl officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Nov. 9, 1937, in Millersburg, Pa., to Wilbert and Hazel (Vandeventer) Fry, he married Nell Stites on June 7, 1959. Mr. Fry performed miscellaneous ranch work locally for numerous years, retiring four years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, especially in the mountains. Among his hobbies were blacksmithing and creative art welding. He was active in First Church of the Nazarene, appreciated his friends, and was known for his love of family and sense of humor. Two brothers, Gary and William “Bill” Fry, and a sister, Peggy Rose, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; three sons, David of Sheridan, James of Billings, and W. Roy of Tonasket, Wash.; a daughter, Patricia Fry of Independence, Mo.; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three sisters, Carol Bisbee, Sheridan, Nellie Murray, Kirby, Mont., and Nancy McCallister, Drakesville, Iowa; and a brother, Daniel, Sheridan. William Deininger

William Lawrence “Bill” Deininger, 76, of Coal Valley, Ill., died Monday, January 19, 2004, in Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, Ill. He was brother of Zaide Deininger of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Coal Valley with burial in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home in Coal Valley. Mr. Deininger was born Nov. 14, 1927, in Brownwood, Texas, to William L. and Annetta Cecelia (Webb) Deininger. He served in the Navy during World War II. He married Jean M. Snodgrass May 11, 1957, in Farmington, N.M. He was employed for more than 25 years as a welder and pipe fitter for Local 25 and was affiliated with Natkin Mechanical Contractors. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Coal Valley and served on the church board of trustees. He also belonged to American Legion Post 246 in Moline, Ill., and the Local 25 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union. In addition to his brother, survivors include his wife; a daughter, Karma Feldman of North Barrington, Ill.; two sons, Dewey Gabbard of Albany, Ill., and John Gabbard of Scheffield, England; and two grandchildren. Ralph L. Foltz

Ralph Lawrence Foltz, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, in the Bremerton Health & Rehab Center in Bremerton, Wash., according to his family. He was brother of Don Foltz of Sheridan. Services are private. Mr. Foltz was born April 21, 1907, in Oakland, Ill., to William and Mildred Foltz. The family homesteaded a ranch at Upton in 1910, and Mr. Foltz tended sheep on horseback and worked at the family sawmill hauling ties to the railroad. He served in the Wyoming National Guard. He married Edith Metcalf. He married Grace Rank in 1938. Mr. Foltz worked at the Federal Bentonite Foundry in Osage until 1929, then at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, S.D., until 1942. During World War II, he was a welding inspector at Todd Shipyards in Tacoma, Wash., then worked as a machinist for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton until the end of the war. He operated two auto garages in Port Orchard, Wash., until 1949. He also was a diesel mechanic for a year for the Alaska Road Commission in Fairbanks. He returned to Port Orchard and worked as a tow truck operator and mechanic before operating his own Foltz Auto Wrecking in Port Orchard for 18 years. He retired to Bremerton in 1970. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, three sisters and five brothers. In addition to his brother, survivors include his children, Evelyn Denend of Seattle, Mildred Patterson of Federal Way, Wash., Robert of Haslett, Texas, Richard of Burien, Wash., and Kay Hill of Fort Pierce, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Giffin of Newcastle; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. George Lyle Dill

George Lyle Dill, 75, of Basin died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in South Big Horn County Hospital between Basin and Greybull. He was father of William George Dill of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in United Methodist Church in Basin with the Rev. Jack Preston officiating. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery in Basin. Viewing is 2-7 p.m. today in the Atwood Family Funeral Directors Chapel in Basin. Mr. Dill was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Mercer County, Mo., to Charles Owen and Bessie Irene (Wheeler) Dill. The family moved to Wyoming in 1931, first to the Montgomery Ranch near Manderson, where Mr. Dill's father worked, then to Basin and a ranch near Burlington. Mr. Dill married his first wife, Patricia Joyce Shelby, Nov. 26, 1950, in Bedford, Iowa. They resided at the family ranch in Wyoming. The family later moved to Basin, where Mr. Dill worked at the water plant and established Dill's Auto Service. He sold the business in 1978. Mrs. Dill died June 26, 1981, after a long illness. Mr. Dill continued working at a Basin communications service and later opened a mechanic's shop south of town. He also worked for Tri-County Telephone Association Inc. He married Reba M. Shryack Feb. 14, 1983. Mr. Dill enjoyed working with his hands and was a mechanic, welder and woodcraftsman and did electrical work. His hobbies included boating, fishing, camping and restoring classic automobiles. In addition to his son, survivors include his wife; two daughters, Susan Kathleen Wenke and Holly Sue Robbins; a stepson, Steve Shryack; two stepdaughters, Carla Capser and Shauna Schneider; seven grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren. BUFFALO — Chuck McMullin, 77, of Buffalo died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with Bishop Sean Durrant officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Tuesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Billings. Douglas Martin Clausen

Douglas Martin Clausen, 52, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial services with military honors will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at Oregon Trails State Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Clausen was born May 5, 1951, in Casper to LeRoy “Pete” and Kay (Babcock) Clausen. He joined the Army in July 1968 and was honorably discharged in July 1971. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, overseas bars and a marksman badge with M16 rifle bar. He re-enlisted from 1977-81. He belonged to American Legion Post 7 and the National Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Casper; two brothers, David of Aspen, Colo., and Dennis of Florissant, Colo.; and a sister, Diane of Casper. Memorials may be made to the Natrona County United Veterans Council in Casper.

J. Milton Bennick

Sheridan native J. Milton Bennick, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Mesa, Ariz. Graveside services were Friday at the City of Mesa Cemetery. Arrangements were with Bueler Mortuary. Mr. Bennick was born May 16, 1918, in Sheridan to Fred and Ella May (Krout) Bennick. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked more than 30 years for The Chandler Arizonan as a Linotype operator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dalzell Bennick, in 1982 and by a daughter, Kay. Survivors include two sons, David and Larry; eight daughters, Suella Chapman, Charlene Kagebein, Audrie Thompson, Karen Maresca, Joyce McCray, Debra Spooner, Maxine Howard and Lavonne Warren; a sister, Mildred Bybee; a brother, Glen; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mary Cash

Mary Lou Cash, 74, of Buffalo died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at her residence. She was sister of Joyce Shoemaker and Ruth Searcy, both of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Dr. Karin Stork-Witson officiating. Order of the Eastern Star will conduct services in the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Cash was born Feb. 4, 1929, in Buffalo to Clifford and Phoebe Searcy. The family moved to Missouri when she was a child, and she attended schools there until July 1944, when the family moved back to Buffalo. She attended Johnson County High School. She married Ron Gallimore Aug. 21, 1947, in Sheridan. They made their home in Midwest, where Mr. Gallimore worked for Pan American Petroleum. The family moved to Meeteetse in 1961. The Gallimores later divorced. Mrs. Cash married Marty Schilling in 1967 in Sheridan. They moved to Buffalo, where Mr. Schilling was a contractor. He died in February 1973, and Mrs. Cash married Tom Cash that same year in Buffalo. Mr. Cash died in July 1991. Mrs. Cash was a member of Union Congregational Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. In addition to two husbands, she was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Ridenour of Gillette; three brothers, Jerry and Joe Searcy, both of Pallisades, Colo., and Dan Searcy of Casper; two other sisters, Ann Mattison of Buffalo and Wanda Wayant of Denver; and a granddaughter.

Gus Harry Mavrakis

Sheridan County native Gus Harry Mavrakis, 87, of Billings died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at his resi-dence. A Trisagion Service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dahl Funeral Chapel, and a funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral with Mr. Mavrakis' nephew, the Rev. Kosta Petrogeorge, officiating. Burial will be in Mountview Cemetery. Mr. Mavrakis was born July 6, 1916, in Monarch to Harry and Georgia (Blodemos) Mavrakis. He was educated in Monarch and Sheridan. He married Katherine Panos in Billings Aug. 25, 1940. They worked together in the ABC Shoe Shop in Sheridan and owned and operated the Maverick Boot and Shoe Shop making custom boots for celebrities including Roy Rogers, Monty Montana, Edmund O'Brian, Forrest Tucker, Laura Elliot and Harry Carey Jr. The Shrine Circus' Hubert Castle wore a pair of Maverick boots when he posed for a Life magazine cover shot in 1941, and the boots are in a Circus Hall of Fame in Florida. The couple also made orthopedic shoes, and Mr. Mavrakis invented the TAK-PAK Fly/Lure Box. He resided in Billings 62 years and belonged to the Greek Orthodox AHEPA and the Billings Chamber of Commerce. He played semipro hockey, football and baseball and participated in track, cross country and ice/roller skating. He owned and operated his own rinks. His hobbies included dancing and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Paul. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Deichl and Georgine Meissner, both of Billing, and Georgia Georgas of Denver; a brother, Sam of Sheridan; and several grandchildren and great-grand-children.

 

Frank Bordeaux

Frank Bordeaux, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. At Mr. Bordeaux's request, cremation has taken place, and a private family committal service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Bordeaux was born Nov. 18, 1914, in Sheridan to John L. and Ann (Mosher) Bordeaux. He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area and graduated from Ranchester High School. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps after graduation and helped build the Dayton-Kane Road over the Big Horn Mountains. He married Esther Peterson Sept. 16, 1939, in Billings. He lived and worked in Seattle as a sheet-metal worker during World War II. After he returned to Sheridan, he was a partner in the Sheridan Sign Shop with Bernard Thomas and Walt Smith. He later worked for several years for Prill Bros. as a sheet-metal worker. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43, A.F.&A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies, Kalif Shrine and the Oriental Band. He belonged to Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include three brothers, Jim of Sheridan, William of Las Vegas and Walter of Long Beach, Calif.; and three sisters, Margaret Pearson of Seattle, Barbara Day of Green Valley, Ariz., and Ruth Scherry of Sheridan. Marjorie Lee Anderson

Sheridan native Marjorie Lee (Barkey) Anderson, 81, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Royce Brown officiating. Cremation will follow services. Bustard's Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Anderson was born April 11, 1922, in Sheridan to Reuben and Vivian (Church) Barkey, pio-neer ranchers in Johnson County. The family later ranched in Sheridan County, and Mrs. Anderson graduated from high school in Sheridan County. She attended the University of Wyoming for a year, then began her career in teaching. She married Joseph “Ben” Anderson in 1943, and they worked on various ranches in Montana, Crook County and Johnson County. Mrs. Anderson taught country schools in Billy Creek, Mayoworth, Sussex, Barnum and Kaycee for 10 years. The family moved to Casper, and Mrs. Anderson taught for 20 years at Westwood and Paradise Valley elementary schools. She retired in 1986. After retirement, she did volunteer work at Natrona County Memorial Hospital, Fort Casper and the Chamber of Commerce and taught “55 Alive” driving classes. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Allan, and three sisters, Betty Barkey, Doris Maret and Jeanne Berry. Survivors include two sons, Jim and Rusty, both of Casper; a daughter, Christy Cleveland of Kaycee; two brothers, John Barket of Denver and Ralph Barkey of Lincoln, Calif.; a sister, Patsy Hoffman of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.

Don McGoodwin

Don McGoodwin, 61, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. At his request, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius offi-ciating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. McGoodwin was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Okemah, Okla., to Mack and Mary Joyce (Baker) McGoodwin. He grew up and attended schools in Fayetteville, Ark. He was a 1960 graduate of Fayetteville High School. He joined the Navy after high school and was honorably discharged following the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. He moved to Powell and received an associate's degree in wildlife management from Northwest College in 1965. He married Linnet Miller Nov. 27, 1963, in Cody. The family moved to Thermopolis, where they lived five years while Mr. McGoodwin was employed as recreation director at the Wyoming Boys School. They moved to Sheridan, and Mr. McGoodwin worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad until 1999, when he retired as an engineer. He was a member of the Sheridan Sportsman's Club and an avid wood-worker, fly-fisherman, traveler and Civil War student. He enjoyed spend-ing time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Brenda Johns of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; a sister, Joycene Stallcup of Denver; and two grand-children. Gary Kaiser

Former Sheridan resident Gary Kaiser, 72, of Kennewick, Wash., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, in Kennewick. A memorial service was Dec. 6 at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home in Kennewick. Mr. Kaiser was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Loveland, Colo., to Jacob and Bertha Kaiser. The family moved to the Sheridan area when he was a child, and he attended schools here. He was a 1951 graduate of Sheridan High School. He married Marjorie Montmorency May 14, 1951, in Billings. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-55. He began a career with GTE in Orange County, Calif., and trans-ferred to Kennewick in 1968, working as an installer. He retired in 1993. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a son, Bruce of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters, Jean Duven of Black Diamond, Wash., and Karol Clark of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother, Ralph of Buffalo; and four grandchildren. Beulah E. Ferries, 100, of Wilton, Wis., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at her residence. She was mother of John and Jay Ferries, both of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Congregational Church in Wilton with Pastor Carl Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Smith-Nelson Funeral Home in Wilton and at the church from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday. Mrs. Ferries was born May 17, 1903, to Hugh and Sarah (Shattuck) Dempsey at Jug Creek, Wis. She attended school in LaFarge, Wis., and graduated from high school in Wilton. She began teaching school in North Dakota at age 16. She married Vern H. Ferries July 2, 1920. They farmed in Wilton and owned and operated a funeral home and furniture store in Wilton, LaFarge and Norwalk, Wis. Mrs. Ferries was a member of Eastern Star, Faith Congregational Church and the church ladies circle. her husband on Dec. 6, 1989, and a sister, Bessie Clark. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Meacham of Wilton; two other sons, James of Nekoosa, Wis., and Dr. Jeremy of Corvallis, Ore.; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grand-children; and 10 great-great-grand-children.

 

Sadie Roediger

Former Sheridan resident Sadie Roediger, 98, of Sedona, Ariz., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, in Sedona. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with the Rev. Dick Edgerton officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Roediger was born Nov. 24, 1905, in Lost Cabin to Simpson and Sarah Chandler. She was a 1923 graduate of Lander High School. She married Edward “Ted” Roediger Oct. 18, 1926, in Casper. The family resided in Midwest, where Mr. Roediger worked for Salt Creek Oil Field, and Mrs. Roediger was a homemaker. 1969. Mr. Roediger died in 1984. Mrs. Roediger moved to Sheridan in the late 1980s. She later resided at Kachina Point Health and Rehabilitation Center in Sedona. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking and playing bridge. She was a member of the Episcopal church and Royal Neighbors. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grand-daughter. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Martin of Sedona; two sons, Howard Jones of New Mexico and Richard Roediger of Buffalo; a sister, Ruth Semmens of New York; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Emil Benth

Emil Ellsworth “Bud” Benth Sr., 82, of Sheridan died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and National Guard. Mr. Benth was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Bonetrail, N.D., to Emil O. and Edna (Jacobsen) Benth. He grew up on the family wheat farm in North Dakota and attended Blacktail School through the eighth grade. He learned to play the accordion as a boy, then taught himself to play several musical instruments and made a living as a musician and ranch hand. He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a medic in Coral Gables, Fla. He married Helen Frances Hartford Feb. 22, 1946, in Quincy, Mass. They lived in North Dakota until 1952, when they moved to Sheridan. Mr. Benth played music at, and later managed, the Crescent Bar. He also managed the American Legion, then managed the Elks Lodge for 10 years. He and his sons entertained at the Sheridan Inn and Sheridan area for many years, including at the annual Big Horn Mountains Polka Fest. After retirement, he drove a school bus, tuned pianos and continued to play music. He also was a horseman. He was a 57-year member of the American Legion and life member of Elks Lodge 520. He helped develop the Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and served on the Sheridan Rodeo Board as vice president and arena director for more than 10 years. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991; two brothers, Odin and Vernon; and a grandson. Survivors include four sons, E.E. “Buddy” Jr., Steven “Shooter” and Barry, all of Sheridan, and Joel of Kingman, Ariz.; his longtime friend and companion, Wilma Kupper; two brothers, Marvin and Clayton, both of Williston, N.D.; a sister, Enid Radtke of Riverside, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grand-children. Anna Patricia Hoaglan, 84, of Sheridan died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and private ceremonies will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hoaglan was born April 24, 1919, in Sheridan to Joseph and Eva (Kuzma) Gorzalka. She married Carl Hoaglan July 18, 1940. The family moved to Story in 1952. Mrs. Hoaglan began working at the Banner Store in 1958 and was assistant postmaster at the Banner post office for many years. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include a son, Orval of Story; two daughters, Carol Poston of Chicago and Marie Bartlett of Banner; a sister, Mary Snyder of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Eagles Auxiliary and enjoyed horses, wildlife, painting, visiting historical sites and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and a daughter. Survivors include a son, Alvin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Sylvia Jean King of Lewistown, Valerie G. Davis of Helena, Mont., and Patricia Lee King of Sheridan; a brother, Donald Johnson of Clinton, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Eloise Bourke

Eloise Bourke, 82, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing will be 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Little Big Horn National Cemetery at Crow Agency, Mont. Mrs. Bourke was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Beatrice, Neb., to Thomas and Lucille (Collier) Griffin. The family moved to Sheridan in 1929. Mrs. Bourke graduated from Sheridan High School in 1939. She graduated in 1942 from the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1943-46 including two years in a field hospital in Europe during World War II. The hospital was engaged in campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes and the Rhineland. The hospital and its personnel were awarded the EMAE Theater Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. The unit was transferred to Norway after the war. Its services were described in "The White War of Norway" and "The Return of King Haakon II to the Throne" in the September 1945 issue of National Geographic magazine. Mrs. Bourke married James J. Bourke Jan. 29, 1946, in Sheridan. She worked as a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital from 1947- 57, then at Sheridan VA Medical Center from 1957 until retiring in 1977. She was a member for more than 50 years of the American Legion and a 62-year member of First Christian Church. She also belonged to the AARP. She enjoyed visiting her family and friends and was active in First Christian Church and its choir. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977 and by a brother, Richard D. Griffin. Survivors include three sons, James J. II of Woodbridge, Va., Ronald of Hastings, Neb., and Michael of Sheridan; a sister, Betty Snyder of Casper; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or the Salvation Army.

 

Lois Marie Pehringer

Lois Marie Pehringer, 79, of Buffalo died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. She was sister of Doris Scrutchfield of Sheridan. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Buffalo Senior Center with the Rev. Dick Edgerton officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with a private family graveside service at a later date. Mrs. Pehringer was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Chadron, Neb., to Harlow and Ester Taylor. The family later moved to Broadus, Mont. Mrs. Pehringer graduated from high school in Buffalo in 1943. She went to Denver, where she worked in a munitions plant during World War II. She returned to Buffalo and worked as a nurses' aide at Johnson County Memorial Hospital. She married John D. Pehringer June 10, 1947. The family lived in several places including the Big Horn Mountains, where Mrs. Pehringer guided hunters and worked in the Caribou Lodge. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, spending time with her family and shooting pool at the Buffalo Senior Center. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lois; three brothers; and two sisters. In addition to her sister, survivors include her children, Elizabeth Culp of Evansville, Frank, Robert and Linda Pehringer, all of Newcastle, Joyce Craft of Trout Creek, Mont., and Tom and Steve Pehringer, both of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Emil E. "Bud" Benth Sr., 82, of Sheridan died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Jennie B. Kusel

Sheridan native Jennie B. Kusel, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in Lebanon, Ore., according to her sis-ter. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Kusel was born June 25, 1912, in Sheridan and lived here most of her life. She was a 1932 graduate of Sheridan High School and received a Normal Training Certificate from the University of Wyoming Department of Education. She married Arthur T. Kusel Feb. 22, 1937. He died in 1959. A lifetime member of Rebecca Lodge, she worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, David C. “Bud” Stevens. Survivors include a sister, Edna E. Schneider of Sheridan; and two brothers, Thomas Roy Stevens of Vancouver, Wash., and Robert Dolan Stevens of Sweet Home, Ore.

 

Margaret Joann Klier

Margaret Joann (Olson) Klier, 52, of Portland, Ore., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Portland of natural causes, according to family members. She was born Oct. 15, 1951, to Harold and Alice Olson. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jerry. Survivors include her husband, Gary; and a brother, Dan Olson of Sheridan.

 

Eloise Bourke

Eloise Bourke, 82, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing will be 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Cremation will follow the ser-vice. Burial of cremains will be in the Little Big Horn National Cemetery at Crow Agency, Mont. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Salvation Army.
