Phoebe Jane Black

A memorial Mass for former Sheridan resident Phoebe Jane Black will be 8 a.m. Feb. 10 at Holy Name Catholic Church. A brunch will follow in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Black died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007. Her obituary was published in the Jan. 25 Sheridan Press.

 

F. Joyce Kobielusz

Funeral services for F. Joyce Kobielusz, 76, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Kobielusz died Monday, Jan. 29. 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Kane to Carl and Kathryn (Zurcher) Hessenthaler. She grew and graduated from high school in Lovell. She married Edward Carson in 1947 in Lovell. They divorced in 1952. Mrs. Kobielusz moved to Cody and worked for Husky Oil Co. She moved to Sheridan in 1962 and worked as a bookkeeper for Husman Construction. She married John T. Kobielusz in Worland in 1969. She was financial manager for Sheridan County School District 2 from 1969 until 1992, when she retired. She worked for H&R Block and as a volunteer tax preparer at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center during tax season. She was a member of AARP, the Retired Teachers Association and Eagles 186 Auxiliary. She enjoyed collecting dolls, especially Barbie dolls, Beanie Babies and other toys and antiques, going to Deadwood, S.D., on gambling trips and watching birds in her back yard. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosalee Hentzel and Gertrude Dorey; two brothers, Charles and Paul Hessenthaler; and a stepson, Gary Kobielusz. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gary Carson of Custer, Wash., and Bill Carson of Gillette; a daughter, Diane Kay Peters of Goodyear, Ariz.; three stepsons, Theodore Kobielusz of California and Larry and Robert Kobielusz, both of Sheridan; a brother, Walter Hessenthaler of Yakima, Wash.; three sisters, Minna French of Lovell, Jean Kimball of College Place, Wash., and Ruth Shaffer of Loveland, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Wilda Mae Sonneman Woods

Funeral services for Wilda Mae Sonneman Woods, 94, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Woods died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 29, 1912, in Sheridan to William E. and Fern (Minster) Sonneman. When she was a child, she moved to a ranch on Prairie Dog Creek, where she grew up and attended Wakeley School. After graduating from Sheridan High School, she worked as a receptionist and secretary for Drs. Pete and Will Schunk. She married Clifton A. Woods on Sept. 3, 1936, in Sheridan. During World War II, the family traveled throughout the central United States while Mr. Woods was employed in defense construction. The family returned to Sheridan after the war. Mrs. Woods was a delivery driver for City Cleaning and Dyeing, clerked at the Post Office Grocery and Boras Grocery and operated her own business as a seamstress. She enjoyed gardening and reading. She and her husband were part of an archeological group that researched the Medicine Wheel. Mr. Woods died in 1976. Mrs. Woods became an avid quilter and did crochet, tatting and similar work. She appeared in a video about folk art in Wyoming. She attended classes at Sheridan College in music, painting and other subjects and toured the country with other senior citizens. She was a longtime member of the Wakeley Club and a member of First Methodist Church. She moved to Sugarland Ridge in 2004. Survivors include a son, Darrol of Denver; and a grandson.

 

Elizabeth Annie (Martin) Williamson

A Christian Wake Service for Elizabeth Annie (Martin) Williamson, 81, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Mrs. Williamson died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital following a 17-year battle with cancer. She was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Kleenburn to John and Ruby Etheldo (Guy) Hallworth. She married Delbert Martin on May 27, 1942, in Hardin, Mont. While he served overseas in the Navy, she lived in Renton, Wash., where she completed high school and worked at an ammunition plant for a short time. She was a member of the Methodist Church, various sewing groups and was active with the Cub Scouts. In later years she was a member of Big Horn Women's Club and Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and their 4-H projects. She worked at Warehouse Market until retirement. At 60, she received her first four-wheeler and obtained a motorcycle license. She enjoyed reading, camping, four-wheeling, cooking and being with family. Mr. Martin preceded her in death. She married Robert “Willie” Williamson on Feb. 14, 1999, in San Carlos, Mexico. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Delbert Gary Martin of Vernal, Utah, and Halron Jay Martin of Canon City, Colo.; two daughters, Jeri Lynn Haugen of Big Horn and Lauri Ann Onkka of Sheridan; two stepdaughters, Kasren Nelson of Helena, Mont., and Terry Cashell of Colstrip, Mont.; three stepsons, James Williamson of Aurora, Colo., Kent Williamson of Spokane, Wash., and Robert Williamson of Newcastle; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Esther Lucille

Wade Paustian Sheridan County native Esther Lucille Wade Paustian, 90, of Greybull died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in San Marcos, Texas, after a short battle with cancer. At her request, she had been cremated, and no services are planned. Mrs. Paustian was born in April 1916 to Troy Ralph and Frances Wondra Wade. She grew up acting in the Wade family troupe, entertaining coal miners and their families at the theater in Monarch. The family later moved to Sheridan, and Mrs. Paustian was a beautician in the Wade Sisters Beauty Salon. She married Chris Paustian of Ranchester on Aug. 8, 1938. The family lived in Aberdeen, S.D., where Mr. Paustian managed the Aberdeen Bentonite Plant, and in Wyola, Mont., where they owned two mercantiles. They moved to Greybull in 1951. Mr. Paustian was vice president of mining and production at WYO-Ben Products, and Mrs. Paustian served as his secretary for many years. Mrs. Paustian was involved in the PTA, DOES, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, the Episcopal Church and Greybull Senior Citizens Center and managed the Midway Golf Course for a short time. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining, travel, gambling, music, dancing and collecting. In the late 1990s, she divided her time living with her daughters in Sheridan or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Dalwin and Gerald; and four sisters, Geraldine, Lila, Luella and Francis. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Paustian of San Marcos and Debra Dodson of Cabo San Lucas; a brother, Albert of Billings; a sister, Alberta Harnly of Dallas; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Greybull Senior Citizens Center.

E. Anne (Martin) Williamson

E. Anne (Martin) Williamson, 81, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. A Christian Wake Service will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Linn James Maxwell

Linn James Maxwell, 78, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be later in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville. Mr. Maxwell was born June 16, 1928, in Sheridan to James Alfred and Blanche (Stallings) Maxwell. He was a 1947 graduate of Sheridan High School. He joined the U.S. Army and attended automotive and electrical systems repair at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He was in the Wyoming National Guard with the 300th Armored Battalion. He worked for Hill Field Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah, for nine years, then moved to Rock Springs, where he worked for several oil companies. He later returned to the Sheridan area and worked for Eatons' Dude Ranch. He was an elder with the Ranchester Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a member of American Legion Post 17. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Irl and Dale. Survivors include a brother, Leroy Maxwell of Corona, Calif. Memorials may be made to Natrona County United Veterans Council.

 

Virginia Custis

Private family memorial services for Virginia Custis, 81, of Sheridan will be later under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Custis died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born April 16, 1925, in Sheridan to Claude and Clare (DeLapp) Luce. She grew up around the mining communities of Acme and Monarch. She married Thad Custis on July 19, 1952. He preceded her in death. She worked as a cashier at Walgreen's in Casper for many years. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and crocheting. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Hearst and Hammond; and two sisters, Zola and Lucille. Survivors include a son, John of Big Horn; a daughter, Linda Grier of Sayre, Okla.; a half sister, Margaret Tillery of Miles City, Mont.; and one granddaughter. James Lyle 'Jim' Verley

Memorial services for James Lyle "Jim" Verley, 84, of Sheridan will be this summer, according to his family. Mr. Verley died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Oct. 16, 1922, to Vern O. and Edna (Thayer) Verley in Sheridan. He attended schools in the Prairie Dog area and, later, Sheridan. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for one year, then with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1941-45. He and his wife, Sharon, were married in 1962. He worked for Peter Kiewit & Sons for 37 years, retiring in 1986. During his tenure with the company, he worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway, Garrison Dam, the Ice Cap of Greenland, and Interstate 80. He was a member of Kalif Shrine, Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43, Scottish Rite, Sheridan York Rite, Royal Order of Jesters Court 135, Kalif Oriental Band, Elks Lodge 520, Eagles Lodge 4169, American Legion Post 7, and Sheridan County Sportsman's Association. He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed repairing motors, paddle-fishing, hunting, ice-fishing, playing cards, and being with his grandchildren and his cat, Nitro. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin, and a daughter, Nicki. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jolene Forbes of Dayton and Rebecca Rhodes of Payson, Ariz.; three sons, Duane of Espanola, N.M., Paul of Big Horn and Michael of Sheridan; three brothers, Rex, Fred and Calvin; and eight grandchildren. Phoebe Jane Black

Former Sheridan resident Phoebe Jane Black, 74, of Torrington died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in Applewood Living Center in Longmont, Colo., after a long illness. A scriptural rosary vigil will be 7 p.m. today at Schrader Funeral Home Chapel in Cheyenne. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne. Burial will be in Olivet Cemetery in Cheyenne. Memorial Masses are planned at Holy Name Parish in Sheridan and St. Rose of Lima Parish in Torrington. Mrs. Black was born Feb. 1, 1932, in Hyde, Colo., to Wray and Dora (Andersen) Mountain. She was a graduate of Akron High School and worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. She married John W. Black on Dec. 28, 1953. The family lived in Longmont, Cheyenne, Sheridan and Torrington. Mrs. Black worked in the family real estate business in Longmont and Sheridan for several years. She also did hospice work and was involved for many years in the Cursillo movement within the Catholic Church. She was president of the Council of Catholic Women, coordinated Eucharistic Adoration in Sheridan and Torrington, and worked in the pro-life movement. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Walter Mountain; three sisters, Waunita Brown, Dorothy Gisi and Margie Shannon; and two grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; three sons, John Jr. of Gillette, Kevin of Aurora, Colo., and Joseph of Longmont; five daughters,Jeanne Krische and Sister Michelle, both of Longmont, Karen Pilkington of Berthoud, Colo., Julianne Garber of Sheridan, and Barbara McMahon of Grand Junction, Colo.; four sisters, Marian Davis of Park Rapids, Minn., Helen Pont of Griswold, Iowa, Elva Dexter of Denver, and Donna Cooley of Otis, Colo.; a brother, Eddie Mountain of Springville, Calif.; 30 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Jere `Jerry' Noecker

Services for Jere “Jerry” Noecker, 65, of Sheridan are planned later under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Noecker died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at his residence after a long illness. Cremation has taken place. He was born June 3, 1941, in Rapid City to Louis and Shirley (Ritts) Noecker. The family moved to Sheridan in 1955. After completing school, Mr. Noecker worked for a short time on the railroad, then was employed for 30 years by Kiewit Construction and Mining. He married Sheryl Bedell of Kansas in 1986 in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife; three children, Kelly Noecker of Sheridan and Lori Hammond and Tina Anders of Virginia; four stepchildren, Linda Bennett, Anna Winterman and Phyllis Channel, all of Kansas, and Charles Channel of Sheridan; a sister, Deanna Matteson; a brother, Tom Noecker of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Marion Eunice Benson

A memorial service for family and friends of Marion Eunice Benson, 87, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Benson died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, in Sheridan. She was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Fife, Wash., to Stenor and Ellen Thorson. She grew up near Tacoma, Wash., and graduated from Fife High School. She married Wallace R. Benson on March 1, 1947, in Tacoma. The family lived in Cheyenne for 52 years before moving to Sheridan in April. She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cheyenne and a member of Naomi Circle. She enjoyed golf, bowling and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mary Ann Lance of Sheridan; a son, Ross of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Faulk of Tacoma; and five grandsons.

Geraldine `Gerri' Adams

Geraldine “Gerri” Adams, 74, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be taken to Lander, according to her family. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Adams was born July 20, 1932, in Eufaula, Okla., to Elzora and Edward Tate. She later had a stepfather, Jimmy Faught. She married John Welch in 1954 in California. They lived in Colorado and, later, in Wyoming. Mr. Welch died in 1988. She married Jim Adams in Sheridan. They divorced. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Sprayberry, and a daughter, Machelle. Survivors include two sons, Mike Welch of Evanston and Stan Martinez of Michigan; two daughters, Debbie Stephens of Sheridan and Sheila MacDonald of California; two brothers, Edward Tate and David Faught, both of California; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Fern V. Grams

Fern V. Grams, 87, of Gillette died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette of natural causes. She was mother of Marilyn Grams of Sheridan and Billings. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Gillette with Pastors Joel Wright and Peggy Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services in the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Grams was born Aug. 11, 1919, on the family homestead south of Gillette to George and Sibyl (Johnson) Vanderheyden. She attended McKay School in rural Campbell County and graduated in 1938 as valedictorian from Campbell County High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. She attended one year of college at Phillips University in Enid, Okla. She married Lewis Grams on Dec. 27, 1940, in Sheridan. She was a secretary for Campbell County High School, then a mother and homemaker. She gave private piano and organ lessons for more than 30 years. She played the organ for many funerals and weddings. She enjoyed travel, crossword puzzles, and watching and feeding birds at her home. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, played the organ and served as deacon and elder. She was a charter member of the Stitch and Skillet Homemakers Club and a member of Rebekah Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1990, and a sister, Helen Smith. In addition to her daughter, survivors include three sons, Howard Grams of Winston-Salem, N.C., Allen Grams of Severn, Md., and Norman Grams of Gillette; three brothers, Bert Vanderheyden and Merl Vanderheyden, both of Chula Vista, Calif., and John Vanderheyden of El Cajon, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a fund established in her name to benefit the music or piano fund at First Presbyterian Church in Gillette. Charles `Charlie' Dunn

Private graveside committal of cremains of former Sheridan resident Charles “Charlie” Dunn, 59, of Buffalo are planned at a later date in Greybull. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Dunn died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at his residence after a battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Greybull to Frank and Doris (Shoemaker) Dunn. He grew up and attended schools in Greybull, Sheridan and Rawlins. He graduated from high school in Browning, Mont., in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Ranger as a petty officer working as an airframe and power plant technician. He received three medals and a letter of commendation. After service, he returned to Greybull and worked for Hawkins and Powers Aviation. He moved to Buffalo in 2002 and worked for the Johnson County Cemetery District as assistant sexton. He enjoyed camping, reading, welding and mechanics work. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a brother, Harold of Buffalo. Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Library or Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice.

Mary Gagliardi

Former longtime Story resident Mary Gagliardi, 78, of Louisville, Ky., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, in Louisville of natural causes. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and her ashes will be taken to Australia and scattered off the coast near her childhood home, according to her family. No services are planned. Mrs. Gagliardi was born March 6, 1928, in Tambo, Queensland, Australia, to Roderick and Violet Forbes. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Shorncliffe, a seaside suburb of Brisbane, where she attended schools. She came to the United States in 1946 as an American war bride. She worked many years in the bar and restaurant businesses in Denver, Casper and Story. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles. She was an avid cardplayer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake; four brothers, Douglas, Roderick, Keith and Wallace; and a sister, Heather Collete. Survivors include four children, James Allen, Deborah Allen and Robert King, all of Kentucky, and Phillip King of Story; a brother, Robert Forbes of Brisbane; two sisters, Mavis Lewins of Brisbane and Ina Mitchell of Story; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Arthur Eugene Stroup

Funeral services for Arthur Eugene Stroup, 47, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with Mark Reeves, of Joy Junction Children's Church, officiating. Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow Monday's services, and inurnment of cremains will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Mr. Stroup died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at his residence. He was born Sept. 9, 1959, in Worland to Jack T. and Anita Joy (Hoblit) Stroup. He lived most of his life near Sheridan and attended local schools. He attended Sheridan High School and earned his diploma through the U.S. Army after enlisting in July 1977. He served in the Army's special forces in the Persian Gulf, Germany, Austria and, for four years, in Italy. He received a Medal of Honor for going behind enemy lines to help rescue Lt. Dozier. He married Patty Hyjek of Buffalo. They lived in Loveland, Colo., where Mr. Stroup worked as an electrician. They divorced in 1998. Mr. Stroup returned to Sheridan and worked as an electrician and in coal-bed methane. He was a carrier for the Billings Gazette. He enjoyed the mountains, being outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack T. Jr. and Michael Jeffery; his grandmother, Margaret E. Stroup; and a grandfather, Eugene Hoblit. Survivors include four daughters, Trista Bucholz, Veronique Sue Stroup, Jessica Ann Stroup and Meghan M. Stroup; his parents; a brother, Dennis; four sisters, Debra Carter, Tia Stroup, Dawn Gudhal and Laura Stroup; his grandmother, Inez M. Hoblit; and a grandson.

Betty Ann Taberna

Memorial services for Betty Ann Taberna, 63, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Taberna died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 5, 1943, in Missoula, Mont., to A.J. and Sadie (Oatts) Morris. She grew up in Missoula and was a 1961 graduate of Missoula High School. She attended the University of Montana-Missoula. She married Louis Taberna in June 1983 in Missoula. She was a secretary for the Missoula Police Department. She taught school and was a high school councilor in Missoula before the Tabernas moved to Sheridan in 1991. After moving to Sheridan, Mrs. Taberna taught at Sheridan High School. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards and spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a son, Don Miller of Missoula; a daughter, Kelly Ann Deniger of Missoula; a brother, Al Morris of Salt Lake City; and two grandchildren.

 

Floriene Virginia Bloskas

Floriene Virginia “Granny Flo” Bloskas, 86, of Dayton died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, in Sheridan, according to her family. A gathering for friends and family to celebrate her life will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the home of Rocky and Pam Bloskas, 2645 64th Ave. in Greeley, Colo. Mrs. Bloskas was born March 3, 1920, to Henry A. “Art” and Opal Carrie (Brownfield) Bolenbaugh in the family home in Bellevue, Colo. The family moved to Greeley in 1924. Mrs. Bloskas was a 1938 graduate of Greeley High School and 1940 graduate of Greeley Beauty School. She moved to California in 1942. She married William H. “Bill” Bloskas in 1944. They lived in New Mexico for a few years, then moved to Greeley in 1948. The couple owned several businesses and farms in and around Greeley for more than 45 years. Mr. Bloskas died in 1996. Mrs. Bloskas moved to Dayton in 1997 to be with her daughter. She was a volunteer secretary at The Wright Place and Fort Mackenzie High School, where she was known as “Granny” to the students. She enjoyed telling stories about her life in Colorado, music, traveling, flowers and the mountains. She had traveled to all 50 states and four continents. She was an avid rockhound and arrowhead collector. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Harshbarger, and a granddaughter. Survivors include a daughter, Lynne Wambolt of Dayton; a son, Rocky of Greeley; a sister, Eileen Gordon of Fort Morgan, Colo.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Sheridan native Amy Coffin, 91, of Sheridan, Mont., died Jan. 16, 2007. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the K&L Mortuary Chapel in Three Forks, Mont., with the Rev. Les Anderson officiating. Mrs. Coffin was born March 25, 1915, in Sheridan to John and Barbara (Poluya) Schedlock Sr. She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She helped on her family's ranch while her brothers served during World War II. She married William L. Coffin on Aug. 6, 1945, in Sheridan. They lived in Billings and Rockford, Ill., before returning to Sheridan to ranch. Mrs. Coffin helped her husband with his church ministry. She moved to Dillon, Mont., in 1993, with her daughter, and moved to Sheridan, Mont., in 2001. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and crocheting. She was a member of the First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband; an adopted son, Emmett Other Medicine; five brothers John Jr., George, Earl, Edward and Roy; and six sisters, Julia, Elizabeth, Wilma, Rose, Lorna and Anne. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Phillips of Belgrade, Mont., and Barbara Stine of Ashland, Mont.; a son, Henry of Ashland; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was born Oct. 19, 1966, in Sheridan to Kenneth and Carol (McCalla) Copp. He grew up in Sheridan and Parkman and graduated from Tongue River High School. He attended Wyoming Tech in Laramie and worked for Sheridan Ranch Supply. He married Marcy Seldmann on Oct. 17, 1989, in Sheridan. They lived in California, Billings and Glendive, Mont. They divorced in 2001, and Mr. Copp returned to Sheridan, where he enrolled in the welding program at Sheridan College. He worked at Jack's Auto Body for two years, then worked for the Washington Group Mine in Wright. He went to work at Decker Coal in October 2005. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed working on cars, camping, the mountains, four-wheeling, and horses. He was the companion of Lavon Heide of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his children, Kolte, Shain, Ashton and Austyn, all of Glendive; his mother of Parkman; a brother, Mac of Sheridan; and a sister, Tina Fauber of Sheridan. Adrian Malone

Adrian Malone, 91, of Big Horn died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of complications from heart failure. A memorial service is planned for the spring, according to his family. Mr. Malone was born March 30, 1915, in Mount Kisco, N.Y., to Eleanor Slater Malone and Edmund Halsey Malone. His early schooling was in New England, but after the death of his mother and a half brother, Boris de Struve, his father sent him to the Santa Barbara School (now Cate School) in California. He spent summers at Three Rivers Ranch, where his father was an associate, in Jackson Hole. He was a 1937 graduate of Harvard College and served on the editorial board of the Harvard Lampoon. He was on the polo and tennis teams. He played tennis all his life. In his 60s, he and Paul Denison won the men's doubles tournament. After college, he studied architectural drafting in London. He married Joan Skewes Cox in California in 1938. The couple moved to Cambridge, Mass., where Mr. Malone enrolled in architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. After Pearl Harbor, he enrolled in a course in naval engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduation, he received a commission in the U.S. Navy and served as a docking officer at Hunter's Point Naval Drydocks on San Francisco Bay, where the remnants of the Pacific Fleet were being restored to service. After the war, he maintained an architecture office in San Francisco, where he designed churches, residences, office buildings and ski lodges. Wanting to remain as the head designer of a small firm, he moved to Sheridan in 1960 and opened an office with a secretary and one draftsman. The firm — now Malone, Belton, Abel — has designed Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, the Wyoming Highway Information Center, First Presbyterian Church, the gallery at Bradford Brinton Memorial & Museum, and the Plains Indian Museum in Cody, among other structures. Mr. Malone was chairman of the Wyoming Arts Council in 1976. He was a painter and sponsored other artists all his life by buying their works. After he retired, the Malones spent part of each year in the south of France. The last structure he built was a stone pavilion next to a walled garden in Provence. In addition to his half brother, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Harrah, in 1998 and by a half sister, Elena Trenholm. Survivors include his wife and three children, Judith Hayne and Nicholas Malone, both of California, and Gillian Malone of Big Horn.

Jack E. Ferren

Memorial services for Jack E. Ferren, 95, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Ferren died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. He was born Sept. 16, 1911, to Elmer and Maud (Stone) Ferren in Sheridan. He was a 1929 graduate of Sheridan High School and was student body president. He earned a master's degree in geology from the University of Wyoming. He was a member of UW's Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He had been a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 since 1936, serving as exalted ruler from 1944-45, district deputy grand exalted ruler in 1967-68, trustee from 1950-1970, lodge secretary from 1976-83 and state trustee for five years. He received the State Elks Distinguished Elk Award for 1985-86. He was a founding member of the Sheridan-WYO Rodeo Association in 1932 and served on the rodeo executive board, holding nearly every office on the board. He was a Mason and member of the Kalif Shrine. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Big Horn Mountains. He played the clarinet, saxophone and organ and earned money for college by playing in dance bands. He played in summer bands for park concerts and in the Kalif Shrine Band. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, and a son, Gene. Survivors include a son, David of Penfield, N.Y.; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Carl H. Cantonwine

Private graveside services for Carl H. Cantonwine, 92, of Sheridan will be Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home, followed by a luncheon. Mr. Cantonwine died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, in Sheridan. He was born Dec. 16, 1914, to Claude and Margaret (Fehling) Cantonwine in Nathrop, Colo. He attended the rural Gas Creek School. The family moved to Watsonville, Calif., in 1928 and operated a dairy. Mr. Cantonwine was a shipfitter building minesweepers at a Seattle shipyard during World War II. He married Juanita Mitchell in Bellingham, Wash., in 1944. After the war, the couple moved to Hayden Lake, Idaho, where they operated a dairy and raised Angus cattle. The family moved to Spotted Horse in 1955 and operated a wheat and cattle ranch. After retiring from ranching, the couple lived in California and later Plentywood, Mont., before moving to Sheridan. Mr. Cantonwine was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Raymond. Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Tagtow of Banner and Elizabeth Kleppen of Outlook, Mont.; a son, Carl Claude of Tooele, Utah; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Brooks D. Study

Funeral services for Brooks D. Study, 83, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Study died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Bartlett, Iowa, to John and Rosetta (Tysor) Study. The family moved to the Bowman Hills area near Hulett when he was a child, and he grew up and attended schools there. He worked on various ranches around Weston, including the Parks Ranch, where he herded sheep. He married Cathern Holdeman on March 21, 1949, in Sheridan. She preceded him in death. He worked as a carpenter for a short time in Gillette before returning to ranching in the Weston area. The family moved to the Sam Row Ranch near Biddle, Mont., in 1960. Mr. Study married Alvina Rosencranz on July 31, 1989, in Miles City, Mont. She preceded him in death. He was a Powder River County (Mont.) commissioner from 1887-93. The family moved to Broadus, Mont., in 1990, then returned to Biddle. Mr. Study operated a mail route from Biddle to Alzada, Mont., from 1976-2002, when he moved to Sheridan. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hulett. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Shannon of Big Horn and Barbara Fleck of Glen Eden, Ore.; two stepchildren, Bonnie Hofer of Miles City, and Doug Nesbit of Susanville, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Slayter died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Kearney, Neb., to O.D. and Hazel (Abbott) Slayter. The family moved to Sidney, Neb., and Mr. Slayter graduated from high school there. While in school, he worked for Western Union, Montgomery Ward, and Union Pacific Railroad as a crew caller. He served with the Army in Skagway, Alaska, during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, he bought the Log Cabin Camp from his grandparents, Harve and Martha Slayter. He is the longest-serving member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, having joined in 1945. He participated in every Sheridan-WYO Rodeo parade for 62 years. He was a ski patrolman and patrol leader for many years, providing first-aid instruction and avalanche training to Sheridan-area youths. He later became a ski instructor. He also enjoyed golf, boating, fishing, hunting, camping, travel, bowling and playing cards. He was a member of the Eagles, Elks, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Big Horn Mountain Masonic Lodge 43, Masonic Scottish Rite, Kalif Shrine, Kalif Shrine Oriental Band and Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include two daughters, Deb Rice and Christine Bunn; a son, Edward; and five grandchildren. Lucy J. Eckert, 85, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Blue Grouse Health Care Center in Fort Collins. She was mother of James D. Eckert of Banner. Sheridan native Jack Williams, 84, of Buffalo died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. John Meyer officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Mr. Williams was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Sheridan to Tyler and Ocic Williams. The family moved to Gillette when he was 6. He was a 1941 graduate of Campbell County High School. He married Cora Pearl Wilson on July 31, 1941. They resided in Gillette. Mr. Williams worked for the Burlington Railroad until 1945, when the couple moved to Buffalo and opened the Buffalo 5 and 10 store. They sold the business to Hested's Store Chain in 1953, and Mr. Williams remained at the store as manager until 1955, when he went to work as advertising manager of the Buffalo Bulletin. The Williamses purchased part ownership of the Bulletin in 1960, then went into partnership in 1964 with Jim Hicks. Mr. Williams retired in 1985. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and riding horses in the mountains. He was a scratch golfer and enjoyed dancing. He was past president of the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce and Buffalo Kiwanis Club, served several terms on the Johnson County school board, was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church Vestry, a 50-year member of Anchor Lodge No. 7 AF and AM, a life member of the Wyoming Press Association, director of First Interstate Bank of Buffalo and served on the state Small Business Administration board for several years. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Dickinson of Gillette and Sandy Todd of Buffalo; a son, Jeff of Buffalo; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Raymond H. Clark

Funeral services for Raymond H. Clark, 88, of Sheridan, retired priest and rector for St. Peter's Episcopal Church, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. The Rev. Clark died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at his residence. He was born March 27, 1918, in Olean, N.Y., to Roy and Helen Clark. He was a 1935 graduate of Olean High School. He joined Boy Scout Troop 34 in Belmont, N.Y., in 1930 and received his Eagle badge on May 6, 1932. He was active in Scouting while in high school. He married Mary Harmer in 1941. She preceded him in death. He married Linda McNeill in 2001. Mr. Clark was a 1940 graduate of the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a 1943 graduate of Seabury-Western Seminary in Evanston, Ill. He first served as a priest in Pullman, Wash., before moving to Laramie, where he was student chaplain for the University of Wyoming. The family moved to Sheridan in 1949, and he served for 39 years at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He was named honorary canon in 1974 by St. Matthew's Episcopal Cathedral in Laramie for his work at UW and his service to the cathedral and the diocese. In 1975, the seminary conferred an honorary doctorate on him for outstanding contributions as a priest and to his community. He served many years as secretary to the Diocese of Wyoming and on its executive committee. Upon his retirement from St. Peter's in August 1988, he was named rector emeritus by the church. After retiring, he filled various denominational pulpits, performed weddings and funerals, and served as chaplain at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He participated in Scouting activities throughout his life. During his tenure as rector at St. Peter's, he encouraged the church to sponsor Troop 112, which at one time was the longest continuously active troop in the community. He received the Silver Beaver and Scout District Award of Merit in 1969 and, in 1986, the national Episcopal Church and the Boy Scout program awarded him the church's St. George plaque. The Rev. Clark also received an appreciation plaque from the Wyoming Girl Scout Council for his efforts on behalf of all Scouting. He served on Sheridan's All American Indian Days board of directors and initiated its interdenominational, interracial church service, served in all offices of the local ministerial association, and was instrumental in starting local hospice and LifeLink programs and the annual Community Christmas Dinner. He was chairman of the board for the Scottish Rite Speech/Language Clinic of Northern Wyoming and served on the board of the Sheridan Senior Citizens Coordination Council from 1990 until 2000, chairing it in 1994-95. He was a member of the Tripartite Board, which disburses state funds to nonprofit agencies in Sheridan County, and a member of the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation board of directors for many years and helped raise funds for the hospital and Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, an honorary past master and longtime chaplain to the Divan of the Kalif Shrine and was almoner for the local Scottish Rite chapter and a member of the board of the Scottish Rite Foundation. His other services included vice president of Community Chest and Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce, president of Kiwanis, board member of the Wyoming TB Association for five years, chairman of the local Red Cross board, board member of the Executive Club, and board member of the Employment Security Commission of Wyoming. He was 1976 Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; received the Northern Wyoming Association of Life Underwriters Award, presented “for outstanding citizenship for contributions to city, state and nation”; was recognized by DeMolay for support and service; received the Alumni Association of the University of Wyoming Award; and was named 1996 Wyoming Citizen of the Year by the Wyoming Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sandra of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Randy of Boston and Peter of Ranchester; and seven grandchildren. Henry G. Freund

Funeral services for Henry G. Freund, 88, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Freund died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, in Sheridan V.A. Medical Center. He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Portland, Ore., to Carl and Jeanne (DeCostard) Freund. He grew up and graduated from high school in Portland, then went to work for the U.S. Post Office. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After service, he returned to Portland and worked for the post office until 1979, when he retired. He enjoyed swimming, golf, bowling and travel. He moved to Sheridan in May 2000 to be near family members. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Louise Freund and Florence Doolin, both of Sheridan; and one nephew and one niece. Memorials may benefit First Baptist Church.

Margo Dexter

Mrs. Dexter died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, in Billings Deaconess Hospital. She was born May 29, 1953, in Shelby, Mont., to John and Grace (Paulus) Mates. She married Bruce Dexter; they later divorced. She worked as an activities director for 20 years. She enjoyed helping people, gardening, the outdoors, spending time with her grandchildren, and going to lunch with friends. She was preceded in death by her mother; her stepfather, Earl Kuta; and a brother, John Crawford. Survivors include two sons, Jay of Canon City, Colo., and Mark of Gillette; a daughter, Devon Noecker of Sheridan; and six grandchildren.

May Little, 96, of Sheridan died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and the family plans to bury her ashes in Oklahoma City. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Little was born Aug. 12, 1910, to Charles and Roxie Carter of Willis, Okla. She married Paul Little. Mrs. Little was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, dancing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Paul Leon; and her siblings. Survivors include a daughter, Marie Dear; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Harold W. Axtell

Mr. Axtell died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1917, in Medina, N.D., to Lloyd and Lyla (Larson) Axtell. He grew up and graduated from high school in Medina. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After service, he returned to Medina and operated his own auto body shop. He married Harriet Sorvik on Dec. 28, 1949, in Sheridan. They lived in Medina for a year, then moved to Sheridan. Mr. Axtell worked for Hammer's Chevrolet for more than 30 years before retiring. He enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing, hunting and going to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Trautmann. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Morris of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two sisters, Maxine Ames of Minot, N.D., and Marian Mathern of Salem, Ore.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Clay Joseph Hutchinson Jr.

Private family services for Clay Joseph Hutchinson Jr., 80, of Sheridan will be later in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Mr. Hutchinson died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Hutchinson was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Denver to Clay and Helen (Walker) Hutchinson. He grew up in Denver and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he received a degree in business from the University of Colorado. He married Margaret Adams in 1950 in Joplin, Mo. They moved to Georgetown, Colo., where Mr. Hutchinson worked as a banker until 1994, when he retired. The Hutchinsons moved to Litchfield Park and enjoyed playing golf. Mr. Hutchinson was preceded in death by his wife. Rudolph V. `Rudy' Kawulok

Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Rudolph V. “Rudy” Kawulok, 52, of Cheyenne will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with George Telez officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Kawulok died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, in Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne from cancer. He was born Feb. 6, 1954, in Sheridan to Frank and Mary (Josefy) Kawulok Jr. He attended schools in Worland, Ranchester, Dayton and Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan College. He was involved in coaching, playing, sponsoring and officiating athletic competitions. He married Carol Bulkow in 1980. They later moved to Gillette, where Mr. Kawulok continued his career in radio broadcasting. He formed his own disco company, operating it during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As Rowdy Rudy, he provided music for radio stations and nightclubs in Wyoming, Nebraska and Indiana for many years. He later turned to the news and marketing side of the business. He enjoyed the outdoors, sports, fishing, his dog and spending time with his family. Survivors include a son, Vincent of Cheyenne; a brother, Frank of Sheridan; a sister, Billie Rawlings of Sheridan; his companion Cheryl Daems of Cheyenne; his stepmother, Ellen Kawulok; and one granddaughter. Waneta Kelly

A celebration of the life of Waneta Kelly, 66, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Fort Pierre, S.D., with the Rev. Norman Jones officiating. Mrs. Kelly died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Kelly was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Hettinger, N.D., to Goldie Ione (Stalder) and B. Glenn Brabazon. She grew up and attended Parker (elementary) School in Lodgepole, S.D., and graduated from Hettinger High School. She obtained her teaching certificate from Black Hills State College. She taught at several rural schools in northwest Parker County and near Gordon, Neb. She married Ken Kelly on June 10, 1972. They lived and worked on ranches in northwest South Dakota and northwest Nebraska until 1976, when they moved to Pierre. Mrs. Kelly enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include two sons, Tom of Sheridan and T.J. of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a sister, Carol Anderson of Spearfish, S.D.; and six grandchildren.

 

Harry Dean Watson

Former Sheridan resident Harry Dean Watson, 69, of Casper died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville under direction of Bustard's Funeral Home of Casper. Mr. Watson was born Oct. 9, 1937, in California to Fred and Dorothy Watson. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator and at Wal-Mart. He married his wife, Nancy, on May 15, 1995, in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife of Casper; a daughter, Petrina Lundy; and two grandchildren.

Steven Richard Sabala, 34, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, in Casper due to injuries from an automobile accident. He grew up in Gillette and earned a GED. He enjoyed motorcycles, riding his dirt bike, listening to music, playing the drums, and being with family and friends.
