Margueritte L. Way, 85, of Sheridan died this morning, Jan. 31, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Walter R. Butch Keith, 90, of Sheridan died Jan. 21, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. At his request, no services are scheduled. Cremation has taken place with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Keith was born Jan. 21, 1918, in Casper to William H. and Edith E. (Hess) Keith. He grew up on the family ranch, which was established in 1892 southeast of Casper. He attended country schools and graduated from Natrona County High School in 1938. He married Patricia D. Morley on Nov. 14, 1947, in Harrison, Neb. They made their home on the Keith Ranch. Mr. Keith was a longtime 4-H leader and a member in several agricultural organizations. He enjoyed dancing, attended 55 consecutive Ranch City Parties, hosted barn dances and turkey shoots, played the guitar and banjo, roller-skated and participated in Senior Olympics. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Bobby; four half brothers, Carl, Earl, Leon and Harold Peterson; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, William and Dean, both of Casper; two daughters, Donna Madia of Casper and Deb Dillon of Sheridan; a sister, Agnes Koch of Valley, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Sheridan-native Jordan Desiree Macy VanRooyen, 1, of Chamberlain, S.D., died Jan. 28, 2008, in Sanford Mid-Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain of a respiratory illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. in the chapel. Burial of ashes will be at a later date. The child was born Jan. 26, 2007, in Sheridan to Christy VanRooyen and Dennis McGee. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Donna Taylor, and paternal grandparents Donald and Ruby McGee. Survivors include her mother of Chamberlain; her father of Oacoma, S.D.; two sisters, Alissa and Jayden, both of Chamberlain; her grandmother, Patricia VanRooyen of Sheridan; and her grandfather, Wade Whetstone of Gillette.
Darrell W. Whitaker, 88, of Sheridan died Jan. 28, 2008, in Sheridan V.A. Medical Center. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Whitaker was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Keeline to Francis and Faye (Grammer) Whitaker. He grew up and attended schools in Kremmling, Colo. He married Millie Kelley on Oct. 9, 1949, in Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. After his discharge from the service, he ranched. A member of American Legion, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include three daughters, Millie Whitaker of Sheridan and Pearl Riggs and Janice Hayes, both of Casper; a son, Darrell Whitaker Jr. of Gillette; a sister, Tilly Lowe; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Otto W. Schilling, 93, of Ranchester died at his home Jan. 26, 2008, due to complications from shingles. Cremation has taken place under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. At Mr. Schilling's request, no services are planned. Mr. Schilling was born July 16, 1914, on Soldier Creek Road near Ranchester to Otto W. and Anna (Sperl) Schilling. He graduated from Ranchester High School and received a business degree from Rocky Mountain Polytechnic Institute in Billings. He was on the college track team at Rocky Mountain and specialized in the high hurdles and 440-yard races. He married Myrtle E. Teeta Vasby on June 30, 1939, in Billings. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was voted Honor Man of his company at the Farragut, Idaho, Naval Training Center and later served in two Advance Base PT Boat Squadrons in the Philippines. After the war, he worked for many years at Wilson Equipment & Supply in Cheyenne and Moss Equipment in Casper. He was co-owner of Valley Machinery Co. in Havre, Mont. He belonged to St Paul's Lutheran Church in Cheyenne and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Casper. He was a Mason and belonged to Rocky Mountain Lodge No. 40 in Cheyenne. An avid outdoorsman and rockhound, he enjoyed the mountains, hunting, camping, fly-fishing, playing basketball and volleyball, and ice skating. After retiring in 1984 to the family ranch near Ranchester, he raised birds and gardened. He was an avid Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball fan. He played golf until he was 89. He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Rudy; and a sister, Elenore Jolovich. Survivors include two sons, Michael of Cheyenne and Steven of Story; six grandsons; and six great-grandchildren. Mass for Geraldine L. Gerry Harrison, 86, of Sheridan was celebrated Jan. 18 at Immaculate Conception Church in Streator, Ill., with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Local arrangements were with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Harrison died Jan. 12, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. She was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Streator to George and Rose (McGurk) Bishop. She grew up and attended schools in Streator. She married Robert Harrison on Dec. 21, 1944, in Streator. The couple owned and operated Westgate Cleaners from 1959 until the 1980s, and Mrs. Harrison was a cashier for Oogies Restaurant. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Streator Elks Club, and the PTA there. She was preceded in death by a son, George R. Jodie Harrison. Survivors include her husband; a son, John Henry Jack of Sheridan; a sister, Bernadette Canale of Streator; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
Jean J. Edwards, 81, of Sheridan died Jan. 26, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Cremation has taken place, and private family services will be later. Mrs. Edwards was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Minneapolis to George and Elsie Hegy. She married Robert V. Edwards in 1950 in Minneapolis. They were divorced. Mrs. Edwards worked at Radio Shack for many years. She was a member of Civic Theater Guild, a bowling league and volunteered at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. She enjoyed camping, playing bridge and reading and loved animals. Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Billings of Lingle, Claudia Edwards of East Leroy, Mich., and Elizabeth Quinn of Kalispell, Mont.; three sons, Steve and Robert, both of Sheridan, and Nathan of San Diego; a brother, Robert Hegy of Lyons, Neb.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services for Leonard McEwan, 82, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Revs. David Duprey and Kevin Jones officiating. The service time was incorrectly reported as 2 p.m. Tuesday on the front page of Saturday's Sheridan Press. Mr. McEwan, former Wyoming Supreme Court justice and 4th Judicial District Court judge, died Jan. 24, 2008, of complications from diabetes. He was born in 1925 in Great Falls, Mont., to Leonard and Olga McEwan. The family moved to Sheridan in 1939. Mr. McEwan was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he played football for the Wyoming Cowboys. In 1947, he was part of the first Wyoming Cowboy football team to travel by airplane to an away game. He remained a lifelong fan of the Wyoming Cowboys and traveled with the team in recent years. He married Cameon Wolfe in 1953 in Story. He graduated from law school in 1957 and began his practice in Sheridan. He was a speaker and master of ceremonies for organizations, was active in Democratic Party politics, and was a member of Rotary, Elks, Kalif Shrine, American Legion, Cowboy Joe Club and American Bar Association. He also was a member of the Sheridan College and Sheridan Memorial Hospital foundations and, along with other Sheridan High School teammates, started the Dead Pecker Society, which met in Story. He was elected to the Wyoming Supreme Court in 1968, serving as a justice and chief justice until 1974, when he resigned to become judge of the 4th Judicial District Court, serving Sheridan and Johnson counties. He retired as district judge in 1985. Mrs. McEwan died in 1977. Mr. McEwan married Mary Amschel on Feb. 22, 1988, in Hemet, Calif. They lived in her family's summer home in Story. In addition to his first wife, Mr. McEwan was preceded in death by two brothers, Lionel and Jim. Survivors include his wife; three stepsons, Edward T., Peter and Stephen J. Amschel; one brother, Robert Lee McEwan; nine step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan College Foundation in care of Linda Lawrence, P.O. Memorial services for Edith Marie Sanwick, 68, of Ranchester will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Mrs. Sanwick died Jan. 22, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 21, 1939, in Sparta, Wis., to Gordon and Loraine (Loe) Libke. She grew up and attended schools there, included Sparta High School. She married Fred Sanwick on Aug. 3, 1963, in Sparta. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant, dairy farmer, mother and housewife. The family moved from Cashton, Wis., to Wright in 1979. She was custodian for the Campbell County School District until 1991, when she retired and the Sanwicks moved to Ranchester. Mrs. Sanwick enjoyed garage sales, playing cards, dancing, reading, camping and fishing, four-wheeling, horseback riding, collecting angels, the Green Bay Packers, and being with family and friends. She became an organ donor after receiving a lung transplant in 2002. She was preceded in death by three sisters. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steve Libke of Wiesbaden, Germany, Wayne Sanwick of Ranchester, and Jim Sanwick of Sheridan; a daughter, Tammy Sanwick of Sheridan; a brother, James Libke of La Crosse, Wis.; and two grandchildren.
Miguel A. Zaragoza Zepeda, 27, of Sheridan died Jan. 25, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Viewing for Kenard Earl Moye, 81, of Sheridan, will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Darrell White officiating, followed by burial with military honors in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Moye died Jan. 24, 2008, in Eastern Montana VA Medical Center. He was born June 18, 1926, in Casper to Earl and Matilda (Lampman) Moye. He spent most of his youth on a small ranch near Spotted Horse. While helping his dad with the family's Steeldust quarter horses, he learned how to ride and rope calves. He competed in calf roping in local rodeos. He joined the Army in September 1944 and served in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, he worked on ranches, pushed concrete for construction, oiled a rock crusher, helped mine coal, and worked with hay moving, bailing, stacking and hauling. He also learned to fly small planes, later obtaining a private pilot's license. He married June Alden in June 1947. They were divorced. Mr. Moye later married Eva Marie Thompson. Mr. Moyes started working at Sheridan VA Medical Center in the housekeeping department. He enlisted in the Army National Guard, later attaining the position of operations sergeant, which he held until retiring in 1986. He drove a bus for the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center from 1987 until May 1996. He received several military awards, including the Bronze Star in 1980 and the Legion of Merit the highest award given by the military during peacetime in 1986. In 1993, he received the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara. He built model planes, hunted and fished. He was preceded in death by his wife and an infant son, Keith Earl. Survivors include four children, Kerry Moye of Casper, Molly Chapman of Deer Park, Wash., and Kay Mespelt and Fred Moye, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Abel Sanchez Benavides, 78, of San Antonio died Jan. 20, 2008, in San Antonio. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Arturo Pestin officiating. Burial will be in Fort Stockton Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are with Memorial Funeral Home of Fort Stockton, Texas. Mr. Benavides was born April 10, 1929, in Fort Stockton to Juan Ramirez Benavides and Rosa Sanchez. He moved to Sheridan in 1965. He married Judith LaNell Powell on Oct. 19, 1967, in Sheridan. The family lived here until 1995, when they moved to San Antonio. Mr. Benavides was an Army veteran and member of the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by a son, Tomas; three brothers, Bartolo, Manuel and Jose; and two sisters, Cuca Benavides and Irene Gonzales. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Loretta Stephenson of Fort Stockton and Raquel Dietrich of Cheyenne; a brother, Antonio Benavides Sr. of Fort Stockton; a sister, Anita Davis of California; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services for Kent N. Schreibeis, 51, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Schreibeis died Jan. 21, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was born Jan. 23, 1956, in Sheridan to Norman and Janice (Schillinger) Schreibeis. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. He graduated with honors from Cypress High School in Magna, Utah. He spent many years on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation and participated in Indian culture and religious practices. He married Julie Knigge on April 7, 1985. He was a leather craftsman and saddle maker and worked many years for King's Saddlery before opening his own shop, Soldier Creek Leather, in 1989. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife; a stepson, Jesse Olson; three daughters, Elaina, Christina and Andrea; his father and stepmother, Cheryl Schreibeis; his mother and stepfather, Jim Lockhart; two brothers, Milan Schreibeis and Chance Small; and six grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Dale M. Morris, 83, of Canon City, Colo., died Jan. 10, 2008, at his residence. At his request, no services are scheduled. Mr. Morris was born June 27, 1924, in Russell, Kan., to Dr. Wilburn H. and Beulah B. (Wood) Morris. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then graduated from Kansas State College. He was a range conservationist with the U.S. Forest Service and lived in Sheridan from 1967-71. He moved to Canon City from Cody in 1978. He married Nancy Lee Hancock on May 20, 1978, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He enjoyed four-wheeling and horseback riding and was a member of Back Country Horsemen and Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. W.H. Morris Jr. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Penny Galles of Casper, Nancy Morgan of Billings, Ruth Rasmus of Richmond, Texas, Ann Ross of Cody; three sons, Greg Morris of Ranchester, Russell Bender of Pueblo, Colo., and Clifford Bender of Canon City; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Alva Arthur Fortner, 82, of Biddle, Mont., died Jan. 17, 2008, at his residence of natural causes. He was father of Christine White of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Morrison, pastor of the Church at the Barn, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mr. Fortner was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Gillette to W.D. and Hester Fortner. He spent his early childhood working on the family homestead in Wright. The family later moved to the Old Cross Ranch in Biddle. Mr. Fortner's parents were some of the first ranchers in Powder River County to have Black Angus cattle. Mr. Fortner raised registered Black Angus for more than 50 years. He also worked in construction and the oil fields. He married Lorraine Oedekoven on June 12, 1951, in Gillette. Mr. Fortner was a trustee on both the Biddle and Broadus, Mont., school boards and served with the Biddle Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed rebuilding and restoring Red Jacket hand pumps, making chokecherry wine, paddle fishing with his family, and hunting moose and elk. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren and going to yard sales and auctions with his wife. He collected Anchor Hocking crystal. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester, and three sisters, Eula Grey, Cora Craft and Doris Wolff. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tim of Broadus, Joe of Biddle and Tracy of Townsend, Mont.; two additional daughters, Gail Eggers of Punta Gorda Isles and Rita Fortner; a brother, Bob; four sisters, Mossie Percifield, Cleo Clabaugh, Loree Sommerfeld and Ruby Wandrei; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial vigil service for Patricia Ann Arzy, 60, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorial liturgy will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Ogg as celebrant. Mrs. Arzy died Jan. 15, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Feb. 12, 1947, in Sheridan to John and Betty (Murray) Arzy. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1966 graduate of Sheridan High School. She attended Sheridan College for one year. She worked as a dietician's aide at Eventide Nursing Home (now Sheridan Manor) for 14 years starting in 1968. She also worked in housekeeping for several Sheridan motels. A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she enjoyed Bible study, listening to Christian stations, cooking, collecting cookbooks and spending time with her pets and family. A celebration of the life of Ina Faye Moriah Lomax, 60, of Dayton will be 10 a.m. Friday at Dayton Community Church with the Rev. Dennis Goodin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Lomax died Jan. 20, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born July 13, 1947, in Sheridan to Aune (Kortez) Dygert and Edwin Ray Dygert. She grew up on the family's ranch on Big Goose. She was active in 4-H for many years. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1965 and received her degree in elementary education from Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University) in Billings. She met Jim Lomax in 1968, and they were later married. They resided on the Lomax Ranch in Dayton. Mrs. Lomax taught for 12 years, including two years at a country school in Wolf. She later taught at Coffeen and Tongue River elementary schools. After her children were born, she stayed at home and home-schooled them. She enjoyed raising chickens and helped move cattle on the mountains. A 4-H leader for many years, she belonged to Dayton Community Church for 39 years and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed traveling in her recreational vehicle to British Columbia in Canada, Montana, Washington, the Grand Canyon and Thermopolis. She was a member of Tongue River Quilt Club. Survivors include her husband; a son, Leo of Dayton; a daughter, Gina Kelty of Dayton; three brothers, Wayne, Arvo and Roy Dygert; and one grandson. Forest Liberty, 78, of Parkman died Jan. 13, 2008, at his residence. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Liberty was born March 6, 1929, in Minneapolis to Felix and Jenieva (Kloster) Liberty. He attended schools in Minneapolis until he moved to Miles City, Mont., at age 14. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Alaska. After service, he was a cowboy for several years before becoming a logger. He enjoyed attending rodeos and panning for gold. Survivors include a son, Henry of Belgrade, Mont.; a daughter, Paula P. of Denver; and a sister, Jo Ann Wilson of Minneapolis.

Memorial services for Anna Lucille Lucy Clark, 79, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Mrs. Clark died Jan. 19, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. She was born Dec. 4, 1928, in Sheridan to Emil and Alice Regelin. She married Murry Bud Clark on July 12, 1947, in Sheridan. The couple owned and operated Clark's Upholstery on Leopard Street from the 1960s until the early 1980s. Mrs. Clark was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in 1958. She was one of the few survivors of the disease in those years. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter, especially to Deadwood, S.D. She also enjoyed playing cards at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, sewing and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine Barnhart; four sisters, Mariam V. Meridith, Regina C. Fauber, Roberta M. Crocker and Leona Buck; and a brother, Raymond F. Regelin. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lynn Dellit of Sheridan; a sister, Phyllis Smith of Sheridan; a brother, Ronald Regelin of Salt Lake City; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Kent Schreibeis, 51, of Sheridan died Jan. 21, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of apparent natural causes. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Andrea Marie Andy Bogensberger, 72, of Sheridan died Jan. 18, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Bogensberger was born Dec. 23, 1935, in Walsenberg, Colo., to Omar and Margaret (Miller) Sorensen. The family moved to Torrington when she was an infant. She grew up and graduated from high school in Torrington and attended the University of Wyoming. She married William Bogy Bogensberger on Aug. 31, 1957, in Laramie. They lived in several places including Phoenix, Omaha, Neb., Conrad, Mont., Jacksonville, Fla., Bridgeport, Wash., and Green River before moving to Sheridan in 1984. Mr. Bogensberger died in 1989. Mrs. Bogensberger maintained a partial residence in Boston for a time to be near her daughter. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and PEO. She enjoyed counted-cross stitch, crossword puzzles, her cats, and being with family and friends. Survivors include a son, Jim, and a daughter, Anne Ginn, both of Omaha. Jane Farrington, 93, of Butte, Mont., died Jan. 20, 2008, in St. James Hospital in Butte after a brief illness. She was mother of Frank Farrington of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place, and plans for a memorial service will be announced later. Arrangements are with Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home of Butte. Mrs. Farrington was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Butte to Frank and Willine (Nichols) Leonard. She lived in Butte most of her life, attending schools there. She graduated from the University of Montana. She worked for IBM, Texaco, MPS Blue Shield, and St. James Hospital and was president of Treasure State Mining Co. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, PEO, Homer Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and American Association of University Women. She helped create the Butte Heritage Cookbook and was a volunteer for patients at Montana State, Butte Community, Rochester Methodist, Fort Harrison and Fort Mackenzie hospitals. She enjoyed playing bridge, playing the piano and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Al Farrington, and two sisters, Marjorie and Elizabeth. Former Sheridan High School teacher Sebastian Juaquin Michelena Jr., 67, of Buffalo died Jan. 15, 2008, in Johnson County Health Care Center. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Pete Johnson officiating. A vigil service and rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services following the Mass. Mr. Michelena was born June 16, 1940, in Buffalo to Sebastian and Anna Kraen Michelena. He grew up and attended school in Arvada and graduated from Arvada High School. He attended Sheridan College for two years before transferring to Black Hills State College, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He later attended the University of Wyoming, where he received his master's degree in education. Mr. Michelena taught art at Sheridan High School before moving to Lovelock, Nev. He later worked for the Department of Defense Education System, teaching in Italy, in Madrid, Spain, for 18 years, and in Germany. He later became an education administrator and traveled to Africa, Asia and other parts of the world. He retired in 2005 and moved to Buffalo to be near his family. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was proud of his Basque heritage and enjoyed travel. He was preceded in death by one brother, Seberiano. Survivors include six brothers, Joseph of Clearmont, Jean of Buffalo, Martin and Santiago, both of Sheridan, Juaquin of Arvada, and Peter of Farmington, N.M.; and four sisters, Kathleen Smith and Marcina McKenzie, both of Sheridan, Betty Kay Green of Cheyenne, and Mary Louise Bradshaw of Fort Worth, Texas. Former Sheridan resident Ruth Katherine (Griessl) Kellison, 82, of Billings died Dec. 27, 2007, in Billings. A memorial service will be in Sheridan later. Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Fuerth, Bavaria, Germany, she was a longtime resident of Sheridan, working for Lonabaugh and Riggs law firm for 30 years until she retired in 1991. She lived in Billings 12 years and was an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard C. Kellison. Survivors include two daughters, Margot Reagan of Quemado, N.M., and Jennie Kuzara of Davey, Neb.; a son, Theodore of Billings; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Herman died Jan. 10, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. He was born April 14, 1934, in Chicago to Ulrich Thomas and Bertha (Haarth) Herman. He grew up and attended schools in Chicago and Brookfield, Ill., and graduated in 1953 from Riverside-Brookfield High School. He married Paula Montgomery in Aurora, Ill., on Sept. 1, 1956. He served in the U.S. Army in 1957. He was a machine design engineer in Illinois for 17 years before the family moved to Ranchester, where it owned and operated Ranchester Best Western Motel from 1970-76. He built, owned and operated Happy's Hut in Ranchester from 1977-80 and was director of Ranchester's Public Works until 2001, when he retired. He was a member of Ranchester/Dayton Rotary Club and its secretary since 1970. He was also a member of the board of directors of Christmas in April. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, building model sailboats, reading, helping others and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Randall and Robert; and a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Hans of Sheridan and Kort of Godfrey, Ill.; a daughter, Caryn Rivinius of Gackle, N.D.; a brother, Richard of Witt, Ill.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Mike, George and John; and four sisters, Ann Kumor, Mary Powers, Albena Kobielusz and Helen Miech. Former Sheridan area resident Wesley W. Hoyer, 74, of Thermopolis died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, in Hot Springs County Hospital in Thermopolis. Cremation has taken place, and family services will be in the summer. Arrangements are with Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis. Mr. Hoyer was born May 30, 1933, in Sundance to George and Betty (Sawyer) Hoyer. He grew up and attended school in Sundance. He married Marjorie Simpson on Aug. 16, 1957, in Casper. Mr. Hoyer worked in highway construction around the state of Wyoming until February 1969, when he went to work for Utah International at Shirley Basin. He worked at Decker Coal from 1975-87. He worked in the gold mine at Elko, Nev., for a year then for Walnut Creek in Calvert, Texas, from 1989-94. The Hoyers moved to Thermopolis in 2004. Mr. Hoyer enjoyed fishing, hunting, horseback riding, farming and camping. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae and Fern. Survivors include his wife, of Thermopolis; a son, Wayne of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Tammy Kibler and Brenda Hoyer, both of Sheridan; a brother, Dutch of Glenrock; two sisters, Darlene Taylor of Spearfish, S.D., and Zelma Hoyer of Sundance; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She also later worked for Pixley Transportation and Shuttle Express. She enjoyed playing bingo, crafts, writing poems, reading, watching scary movies, and the company of her companion, Pat Van Rooyen of Sheridan. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, LeOra Kraft, and a stepbrother, Kenny Bridwell. Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Enid to Edward and Fannie Jones. She married Hadley Herbert Brown on Sept. 30, 1933, in Enid. She was a clerk at the Sheridan J.C. Penney and Anthony's and a volunteer at the WYO Theater. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and travel, and was a quilter. She entered her quilts in contests in the Washington state area. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Hadley L. Brown; and siblings Tom, Everett, Harry, Paul and Easter. Survivors include four children, Marcia Toepp, Lynne Happy, Terry Brown and Mary Childs; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Leonard Merle Norwood, 89, of Story died Jan. 4, 2008, at his residence. At his request, no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. He was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Nebraska to Ernest and Hazel (Jacobson) Norwood. The family moved to Midwest when he was a child, and he attended schools there. He was a 1936 graduate of Midwest High School. He worked for Standard Oil and B.P. Amoco Oil in the Midwest oil fields until 1977, when he retired as an oil field foreman and moved to Story. He married Emily Martines on July 15, 1938, in Valentine, Neb. She preceded him in death. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising horses. Survivors include two sons, Phillip of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Kevin of Story; a daughter, Linda Krout of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Former Ucross resident Mary M. Herzog, 97, of Buffalo died Jan. 3, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with Pastor Nancy Brooks officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mrs. Herzog was born July 28, 1910, in Dickinson, N.D., to Louis and Elizabeth Wehner Gresser. She attended school through eighth grade. Her family moved to Montana in the early 1920s. She married Fred Herzog on June 17, 1929. Mr. Herzog worked on the Huntley Project, then the family moved to Ucross, where they leased the Works ranch until 1947, when they moved to Buffalo. Mrs. Herzog was a nurses aide in the Buffalo hospital for 15 years until retiring in 1972. She enjoyed gardening and reading. She hand-stitched quilts and made several quilts for her children. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, two daughters, a son and one granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, Robert of Buffalo and David of Henderson, Nev.; two daughters, Dorothy Kimble of Casper and June Andrus of Saratoga, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Marion Lucille Trode, 89, of Mitchell, S.D., died Dec. 31, 2007, at her residence. She was mother of David Dee Trode of Sheridan. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ in Mitchell with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Mrs. Trode was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Loomis, S.D., to Charles and Bernice (Comstock) Clark. She moved to Mitchell in 1929. She attended elementary school in Loomis and Mitchell and was a 1937 graduate of Mitchell High School. She married Varley Trode in October 1937. The family lived in Bremerton, Wash., from 1942-46, then returned to Mitchell, where Mrs. Trode worked for Jarold Shop, the Piggly Wiggly store and with her husband at Trode Sheetmetal Shop. She later worked as a dental assistant for 24 years. During that time she became a Certified Dental Assistant through a program at the University of Minnesota. She retired in 1981. She was a member of the South Dakota Dental Assistants Association, Congregational United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship. She served on the church Deaconate Board for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; a son, Ted; and a brother, Bill Clark. Survivors include a third son, Thomas Paul of Custer, S.D.; a brother, Rex Clark of Mitchell; a sister, Betty Koon of Red Lodge, Mont.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Former Sheridan County resident Roy Steele McClurg, 80, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Dec. 29, 2007, in Anchorage after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born April 19, 1927, in Douglas. His family moved to the Buffalo/Sheridan area when he was a child, and he attended area schools, including Big Horn High School. While in high school, he falsified his age in order to join the Navy and serve during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to high school, graduated and attended trade school to begin a lifelong career in carpentry. He moved to Alaska in 1968 to build and remodel homes in the Anchorage area. His wife, Edith, and family joined him in 1970. For the next 30 years, he divided his time between homes in Story and Anchorage. Survivors include his wife and three children, Mike, Penny and Diane. Memorials have been established at Denali Alaskan Federal Credit Union in Anchorage and First National Bank in Buffalo.

Edna Phyllis Maxted, 81, Sheridan, died Dec. 27, 2007, in Dickinson, N.D. Services are 2 p.m. today at First Assembly of God Church, the Rev. John Jackson officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Sept. 1, 1926, in Lindsay, Calif., to Llewellyn and Leona (Love) Maxted, she moved at age 5 with her family to Mayfield, Kan., where she attended school. She worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., during World War II and later moved to Van Nuys, Calif., where she was a telephone operator. She married Allan Duane Maxted on Jan. 27, 1946, in Clearwater, Kan. They lived in Caldwell, Kan., and then Pratt, Kan., where she began her ministerial career with her husband. They ministered in Ulysses, Kan., and later in Walters, Okla., where she was ordained in 1964. They moved to Sheridan in 1965 and ministered at First Assembly of God until 1978. During that time, she also worked as a city meter maid. Mrs. Maxted also worked in special education at Hill School and then as a clerk in Woolworth and Chapek's Five and Dime store. The couple moved to Montana, where they ministered in the Knees community and in Fairfield. They returned in 1986 to Sheridan to minister in the Open Bible Church. Mrs. Maxted retired in 1993 and stayed active in various study groups. She belonged to the Sheridan Ministerial Association in addition to First Assembly of God. An accomplished musician who played accordion, piano, and organ, she also enjoyed singing, crochet, and collecting Precious Moments figurines and dolls. A brother, three sisters, and a son, Nathaniel, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Melvin of Sheridan and the Rev. Warren Maxted of Beach, N.D.; a brother, Don Freeman of California; four sisters, Lorene Porter, Dorothy Keck, Margie Henry, and Leona Korenwinder, all of California; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
