Dayton native Grace Jones, 89, of Buffalo died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with Dave Hall and the Rev. Keith McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery following graveside services. Mrs. Jones was born March 7, 1912, in Dayton to Jacob and Amanda Achenbach. She attended elementary school in Dayton and was a 1930 graduate of Sheridan High School. She worked at Eatons Dude Ranch while attending high school and for two years after graduation. She married Ezra Jones Sept. 17, 1932, in Dayton. They moved to Montana and lived there until 1934, when they moved to Detroit, where she worked in an airline factory making airplane parts during World War II. They moved to Buffalo in 1945. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its womens organization, a Cub Scout den mother for several years and a delegate for the Silver Haired Legislature. She was a member of the Amie Holt Auxiliary for the last several years and worked in the Happy Apple Gift Shop. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968 and by four sisters and a granddaughter. Survivors include three sons, Pete and Craig, both of Buffalo, and Asa of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Glory Little of Leiter, Mary Swartz of Show Low, Ariz., and Kyle Wollschlager of Columbus, Mont.; two sisters, Isabelle Olson of Sheridan and Margie Rogers of Port Arthur, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Health Care Center in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Lyle Dale Reasoner, 77, Grand River, Iowa,
brother of L.W. John Reasoner, Sheridan, died Saturday, July 28,
2001, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa.
Born Nov. 10, 1923, in Union County, Iowa, to Floyd George and
Gladys Viola Reasoner, he graduated from high school and married
Bonnie Bell Jackson in 1952 in Osceola.
Mr. Reasoner worked for CB&Q Railroad in Creston, Iowa, and
Kansas City. He served in the Army from 1948 to 1951 and was a
Korean War veteran. He farmed in Iowa all his married life. He
belonged to the Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars,
American Legion, and Eagles. He was preceded in death by his wife
in 1989 and a brother, Robert Reasoner, in 1981. Survivors
include three additional brothers, Olin Reasoner, Murray, Iowa,
Keith Reasoner, Hamilton, Va., and Don Reasoner, Osceola; a
sister, Avis James, Osceola; and numerous grandchildren,
step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
step-great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Services
are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hopeville (Iowa) United Methodist Church
with burial in Hopeville Cemetery. Arrangements are with Powers
Funeral Home, Afton, Iowa. Memorials may benefit Hopeville United
Methodist Church.
Ellen A. Johnson, 92, of Sheridan died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and private services will be later at her request. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Johnson was born April 16, 1909, in Denver to Oscar Frederick and Adelinea Matilda (Johnson) Reinhold. She grew up in the Denver area. She graduated from Union High School in 1925 and from Colorado Teachers College in 1927. She married Willis W. Kelsey in Sheridan May 10, 1930. They divorced. She married S.S. Johnson in 1959, and they divorced. She taught grade school and high school south of Gillette. She later taught at the Eaton School north of Gillette and the Moorhead, Mont., school. She and her first husband ranched on the Powder River until 1945, selling when the planned Moorhead Dam would have innundated their land. They moved to Sheridan, and she worked at the VA Medical Center. She spent the last 12 years of her life with her daughter. She was an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed listening to games of the Sheridan Broncs, Sheridan Generals, Wyoming Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. She was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Fulton. Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Kelsey Secrest of Sheridan; a son, Willis L. Kelsey of Rapid City; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Senior Center.
Dale Collins
Dale W. Collins, 73, of Palmyra, Pa., died Friday, July 20, 2001, in the VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Pa. He was father of Douglas E. Collins of Sheridan. Funeral services were Thursday at Rothermel Funeral Home of Palmyra with the Rev. Douglas W. Weygand officiating. Mr. Collins was a veteran of World War II and a member of Big Horn Baptist Church in Buffalo. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lee, of Palmyra; another son, Perry Pete L. of Lebanon; four daughters, Sharon K. Cassel of Jonestown, Pa., Kathy D. Diamond of Cheyenne, Deborah J. Harman Sr. of Hummelstown, Pa., and Joyce A. Rhine of Palmyra; a brother, Sheldon of Greenpoint, Pa.; a sister, Beverly Ward of Burlington, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. RANCHESTER Hazel M. Graham, 91, of Ranchester died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. A private family service will be this week. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Graham was born Sept. 26, 1909, in Dodge, Okla., to Bert and Mittie (Hulsey) Wile. She grew up in Oklahoma and Missouri and came to Sheridan, where she attended Sheridan High School. She worked as a nanny and on Eatons Dude Ranch. She married Virgil Graham June 4, 1930, in Hardin, Mont. They traveled with road construction for many years. She enjoyed needlework, sewing, gardening and rock collecting. She loved dolls and the wildflowers in the Big Horn Mountains. She was a life member of Forrest Rebekah Lodge and a member of the Ranchester Womens Club. She was preceded in death by sisters Jewel Kuhl and Annalee Addleman; a brother, Art Wile; and a granddaughter, Stacy Graham. Survivors include two sons, Donald and Bert Graham, both of Hanna; a daughter, Cora Mae Sobotka of Cheyenne; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. W.M. Bill Fry, 65, of Sheridan died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in an accident south of Sheridan. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Fry was born March 5, 1936, in Douglas to Wilbert and Hazel (Van Deventer) Fry. He was a longtime Sheridan resident and owned and operated W.M. Fry Construction for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary. Survivors include his wife, Joann, of Sheridan; three sons, Mark Fry and Mike Smith, both of Seattle, and Scott Smith of Sheridan; four daughters, Brenda Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash., Kim Fry and Sheila Vine, both of Sheridan, and Paula Fry of Bellingham, Wash.; two brothers, LeRoy and Danny, both of Sheridan; three sisters, Nellie Murray of Kirby, Mont., Nancy McAllister of Oregon and Carol Bisbee of Sheridan; and six grandchildren. George T. Cooley, 90, of Sheridan died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. Interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
Burl E. Wilkes, 82, of Ranchester died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Church with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. Interment is in Dayton Cemetery. Mr. Wilkes was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Sheridan to James and Elva (Bennick) Wilkes. He grew up in Sheridan and graduated from high school in 1939. He enlisted in the Army during World War II. After the service, he returned to Sheridan and went to work at the VA Medical Center. He married Roberta Strait Jan. 1, 1949, in Sheridan. He worked at the VA until he retired in 1971. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing and hunting in the Big Horn Mountains and traveling in the United States. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Odd Fellows and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He volunteered at the Lunch Together program. As a member of the Senior Citizens board of directors, he was active in establishing the Tongue River Site for seniors. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1987 and two brothers, Francis Wilkes and Robert Merlin Wilkes. Survivors include a daughter, Jean Harm of Sheridan; two sisters, Maxine Wilson of Lodge Grass, Mont., and Betty Young of Cincinnati; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Memorials are suggested to First Congregational Church, Church Door Renovation or the Senior Citizen Center, Tongue River Site.
Carol L. Dawson, 49, of Sheridan died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and services will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Ms. Dawson was born March 19, 1952, in Spokane, Wash., to Ray and Mae (Beesley) Woolsey. Survivors include three children, J.R. and Tim, both of Newcastle, and Shanna Hayes of Indianapolis; and six grandchildren. Mattie Jean Panetta, 88, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Private family services will be at an undisclosed date and time. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Miss Panetta was born Jan. 22, 1913, to Bruno and Francesca (Corozza) Panetta in Sheridan. She graduated from Sheridan High School and went to work for Panetta Brothers, the city of Sheridan and the Sheridan County Clerks office. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Walter, Frank and Joe; and one sister, Ethel. Survivors include a nephew, Frank Yorio, of Sheridan; two sisters, Carmella Ball of Sheridan and Rose Calandra of Los Angeles; and various other nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Harriet L. Gillespie, 89, of Sheridan, is 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Sheridan. The Rev. Joseph Keys will officiate. Leota M. Donnelly, 87, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Mrs. Donnelly was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Grant Township, Kan., to Charles and Mary (Sennett) Hiatt. She graduated from high school in Douglas and attended Chadron College in Nebraska. She married William J. Donnelly Jan. 12, 1935, in Chadron, and they lived in Casper before moving to Sheridan. They moved to Billings in 1990 after retiring, but later returned to Sheridan. Mrs. Donnelly was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, Beauceant and Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed sewing and raising plants and flowers. She was preceded in death by three sisters. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, W. John Donnelly III of Denver and Howard Donnelly of Ballwin, Mo.; two daughters, Mary Jo MacIntyre and June Bato, both of Billings; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. MILES CITY, Mont. Erma Wegner Drew Ridgeway, 90, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at the Holy Rosary Health Center. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 7691 University Blvd., Littleton, Colo. Interment is the morning of Aug. 13 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. She had recently relocated to Miles City from Denver to be near her daughter, Rosalie Seright. She was born Dec. 18, 1910, in Susannetal, Russia, to Fredrick and Julia Wegner. She came to America in 1913 and was raised near Park City. She married Jacob Jack Drew in 1929, and they farmed in the Clearmont, Wyo., area until Jack died from a farm accident in 1943. She married Wilfred B. Jack Ridgeway in 1951, and relocated to Denver, where she worked 16 and one-half years for Martin-Marietta AeroSpace. She is survived by two daughters; one brother; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and various nieces and nephews. A.C. Pistol Abbott, 74, of Sheridan died Monday, July 16, 2001. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at the WYO Theater with Pastor Tony Forman officiating. Mr. Abbott was born March 6, 1927, in Kane to Charles E. Tuffy and Jenny Sproul Abbott. He grew up on ranches, spending most of his youth at the Dry Head Ranch in Montanas Pryor Mountains and along the Big Horn Canyon. He left home at age 13 to work for the Tschirgi family on the Little Horn Ranch, where he went from night horse wrangler to cow foreman. He joined the paratroopers at age 16 with his mothers permission when World War II started. He was discharged because he was color-blind. He returned home and took private lessons to learn to fly, then joined the Army Air Corps. He was promoted to bomber pilot and flew missions in the Pacific. He broke horses, ranched, hunted and fished. He enjoyed reading and bird-watching in later years. He was preceded in death by one son, Chuck. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Susan, and a son, Lance C. Little Pistol Abbott, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Laureen Kay Dozier of Phoenix and Kathy Lynn Kate Taylor of Sheridan; two stepsons, Travis E. Miller of Galeton, Colo., and Coulter D. Miller of Woodland Park, Colo.; one sister, Jean Slane of Casper; and three grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established at Sheridan State Bank to help defray funeral expenses. Ralph Ike Thomas, 87, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his home. Graveside committal of cremains will be 10 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with the officers of Masonic Lodge 43 officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Sheridan to Sam and Nellie (Mumma) Thomas. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He married Letha Ellenwood Feb. 24, 1940, in Hardin, Mont. He ranched on Clear Creek for several years, later worked for the Padlock Ranch, then was foreman at the Sheridan Heights Ranch for 25 years. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Masonic Lodge 7 in Buffalo and Kalif Shrine. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1996 and by five brothers, Lloyd, Jess, Bob, Bernard and his twin, Roy. Survivors include two sons, Byron of Salt Lake City and Al of Sheridan; three sisters, Dorothy Brug of Buffalo, Berniece Musgrave of Sheridan and Ruth Peterson of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Robert D. Bob Townsend, 67, of Langley, Okla., died Sunday, July 15, 2001. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery in Spavinaw, Okla., with the Rev. Bob Townsend officiating. Military rites will be by the Grove Veterans Ritual Team. Arrangements are with Stephens Memorial Chapel of Pryor, Okla. Mr. Townsend was a veteran of the Vietnam war and served 22 years in the U.S. Army. His wife, Dona Madron Townsend, grew up in Sheridan and they lived here for a time. He was preceded in death by a son, Ed, and a brother, Don Vandusen. Survivors include his wife; sons Rodney of Coweta, Okla., and Bob of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Tammy Kise of Woodstock, Ill.; a sister, Dorothy Townsend of Denver; a brother, Richard Koontz of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Doris Pierson, 87, formerly of Sheridan, died at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin. Rosary services are 7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Former Sheridan resident Helen C. Hayes, 97, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Castle Rock, Colo. Visitation is 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. A graveside service is 11 a.m. in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Ms. Hayes was born Feb. 29, 1904, in Aztec, N.M., to Pinkney and Martha (Patterson) Head. She enjoyed fishing and playing cards. She loved to work and was involved with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 11 siblings. Survivors include her daughter, Carol (George) Acker of Simla, Colo.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Archie Dean Tillman, 77, of Sheridan died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at his home of natural causes. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Gardens in Casper. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 4, 1923, to Archie A. and Alta Tillman at Midwest. He attended a local country school and was a 1942 graduate of high school in Buffalo. He served in the Army in World War II, including D-Day Plus II and the Battle of the Bulge. At the end of the war, an entire German regiment surrendered to Tillman and a co-supply truck driver in an incident that made the Stars and Stripes. He married Colleen Rhoades Nov. 3, 1947. Mr. Tillman was a truck driver all his life. He was a member of the Jehovahs Witness Congregation in Casper, then in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife; five children, Debra Jones of Rapid City, Patty Boggess of Absarokee, Mont., Chery Hallock of Riverton and Mark Tillman and Archie A. Tillman, both of Sheridan; two brothers, Cleo Tillman of Gunnison, Colo., and Wayne Tillman of Sanders, Ariz.; a sister, Laurel Chadwick of Casper; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Russell C. Twiss, 42, of Sheridan died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at his residence. Cremation has taken place and services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Bishop Bret Barney officiating. Mr. Twiss was born July 23, 1958, to Rena (Sweet) and Marvin Twiss in Heidelberg, Germany. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and played a bass guitar with a band. Survivors include his fiancee, Dianne; his children, David Twiss of Denver, Melody Twiss of Canyon City, Colo., and Russell Twiss of Sheridan; parents Marvin and Rena Twiss of Sheridan; two sisters, Robin Clark of Sheridan and Rena Godfrey of Wichita, Kan.; and a brother, Dennis Twiss of Sheridan. Gerald Osgard, 92, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Newberg, Ore. He was a longtime resident of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith McDonald officiating. Interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Osgard was born Feb. 5, 1909, in Boyceville, Wis., to Martin and Margaret (Dierks) Osgard. He grew up and attended schools in the Billings and Sheridan areas. He won first place at the Chicago Worlds Fair for stock judging with the Wyoming team in 1926. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1932 and began his teaching career in a country school on Early Creek outside Ranchester. He later taught in Ranchester and Dayton schools and in Wyola, Mont., and owned the Wyola Mercantile for several years. He served in the Navy during World War II. He married Ilene Stephenson in June 1936 in Sheridan. They taught in area schools and ranched on the Tongue River until their retirement. They moved to Friendsview Manor in Newberg in August 1979. He was known as the freedom fighter and protector of residents rights. He was a historian and documented the history of Sheridan County. His last wish was that he be brought home to Sheridan to be buried. Survivors include his wife of Newberg; a son, Barry of Billings and Ranchester; and one granddaughter
Marty J. Pehringer, 14, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Gifford officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Marty Pehringer was born in Sheridan to Jerry and Linda (Schaffner) Pehringer. The family lived in Big Horn, and he grew up and attended school there. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, riding motorcycles and collecting antiques. Survivors include his father of Buffalo; his mother of Michigan; three sisters, Kelly, Tina and Angela; and two brothers, Troy and Frank. BIG HORN Phyllis M. Garber, 77, of Big Horn died Thursday, July 5, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is before the 2 p.m. service today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. The Rev. David Duprey will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Mrs. Garber was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Belmont, Neb., to Glenn and Amy (Tollman) Miller. She grew up on the family ranch near Belmont. She graduated from Crawford High School. She worked as a civil service employee in Fort Robinson, Neb., until she married Victor Garber there June 10, 1943. She worked in all aspects of the family business in Big Horn, keeping the corporate books and cooking for the extended family, ranch hands and guests. She provided home health care for her mother and mother-in-law and kept books for the local ditch companies. She was a member of Life Link, Volunteer Hospice, Chapter T-P.E.O., Big Horn Womens Club, Mount Hope Cemetery Board, Republican Women, Farm Bureau, Wyoming Wool Growers, Experiment in International Living and Farm Youth Exchange. She enjoyed travel, gardening, reading and assembling photo albums. Survivors include her husband and three sons, Paul, David and Roy, all of Big Horn; a daughter, Patricia Mahon of Rapid City; a brother, Eldon Miller of Denver; a sister, Iris Chubb of Valentine, Neb.; and five grandchildren. Kenneth E. McKenzie, 50, of Sheridan died Friday, July 6, 2001, at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings of cancer. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Gary Kopsa officiating. Mr. McKenzie was born June 6, 1951, in Sheridan to Kenneth F. and Ramona (Huskinson) McKenzie. He graduated from Hanna-Elk Mountain High School, attended Northwest Community College in Powell on a basketball scholarship and attended the University of Wyoming. He married M. Christine Eastment Nov. 29, 1975, in Hanna. They moved to Sheridan in 1976. He was employed by Peter Kiewit and Sons 25 years and was mine superintendent at the Decker Coal Co. He loved music, tennis and basketball and coached basketball and baseball for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include his wife and two sons, K.C. and Peter, all of Sheridan; his parents of Upton; two brothers, Gary of Green River and Don of Sheridan; a half brother; and a half sister. Longtime Sheridan resident Alma Tew Martin, 81, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Stevensville, Mont. Cremation has taken place, and a service will be at a later date in Sheridan. Daly-Leach Memorial Chapel of Hamilton, Mont., is handling arrangements. Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Corvallis, Mont., to Ed and Estella Tew. She moved to Sheridan and graduated from high school here, then graduated in 1941 from the nursing program at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital. She worked for Dr. Louis G. Booth until retirement in 1977. She married Edwin Pete Martin in 1942, and they lived in Sheridan until 1980, when they moved to Belgrade, Mont. After Mr. Martin died, she moved to the Bitterroot Valley. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters and two grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Martin Jones of Stevensville; a brother, Ed Tew of Orangevale, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. BUFFALO Former Arvada resident Theta H. Lester, 93, of Buffalo died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. She was mother of Duane Odegard and Beverly Landrey, both of Arvada. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Wednesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Graveside services will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Lester was born July 20, 1907, in Grant City, Mo., to Daniel and Lucy Lang. She was a graduate of Hamburg (Iowa) High School and received her teaching certification in 1927 from Peru (Neb.) Normal College. She married Casper Odegard May 20, 1929, in Sheridan, and they made their home on the Odegard family ranch in Arvada. She later attended Black Hills State College and received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1963. She married Mayne Lester in July 1970 and they moved to Recluse. They moved to Buffalo in 1979. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, three brothers, two sisters, a daughter and one son. Other survivors include two sisters, Nadine Bergman of Hamburg and Iris Rhoades of Hope, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters. Albert Kurpjuweit, 96, of Broken Bow, Neb., died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home. He was father of Albert and Wayne Kurpjuweit, both of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Steven Neyhart officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Ainsworth, Neb., Cemetery. Mr. Kurpjuweit was born Dec. 11, 1904, to Herman and Bertha (Nieman) Kurpjuweit in the German Valley Community near Brewster, Neb. He married Ida White in Brewster March 10, 1926. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1992 and by two daughters, Doreen Kurpjuweit and Donna Sparks; two brothers, Fred and Herman; and four sisters, Anna Simon, Gertrude Koch, Martha Valentine and Emma Pakorski. Survivors include two additional sons, Melvin of Lincoln, Neb., and James of Snohomish, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. BUFFALO William F. Smith, 86, of Buffalo died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was brother of Agnes Tulley of Sheridan. Lillian C. Hassey, 93, of Sheridan died Monday, July 2, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Vigil service is 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Hassey was born Aug. 19, 1907, in Plumber, Idaho, to Andrew and Bertha (Kutch) OBurg. She grew up in Idaho. She graduated from high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Missoula, Mont. She received nurses training at St. Patricks Hospital in Missoula. She began her nursing career in 1932 at Sheridan VA Medical Center, transferred to American Lake, Wash., in 1933 and returned to Sheridan VA in 1934. She married Andrew Hassey Jr. in Missoula in 1934. They lived in Sheridan, and she worked until 1944, when her son was born. Mr. Hassey died in 1953, and she returned to nursing. She worked at the old Sheridan hospital and helped move into the new Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, where she worked until she retired in 1975. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, St. Josephs and St. Anthonys Catholic womens groups, Half Century Homemakers Club, American Nurses Association, Johnson/Sheridan County Pioneers and AARP 676. She enjoyed crafts, puzzles and traveling. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harry OBurg, and a sister, Donna White. Survivors include one son, Keith Pat Hassey of Sheridan; a sister, Edith ODonnell of Springfield, Va.; and three grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Holy Name Catholic Church.
Rose Iris Eckerman, 88, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Chapel at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mrs. Eckerman was born Feb. 5, 1913, in Whitewood, S.D., to Phillip and Christina (Hett) McCoy. She grew up and graduated from high school in Whitewood, received her nurses training in California and worked at Mercy Hospital. She came to Sheridan to work at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County soon after it was built. She married Peter Eckerman in Hardin, Mont. She retired after 35 years as a registered nurse. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Nursing Association. She enjoyed beadwork among other hobbies. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include a son, Donald Lerner of Nevada.
Vernon K. Sevre, 69, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 1, 2001, while camping. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Judy Roberts officiating. Mr. Sevre was born March 5, 1932, near Thief River Falls, Minn. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Thule, Greenland, and completed the Salvation Army Ministerial Course. He worked for Safeway stores 35 years until he retired in 1992. He was a regional representative for Toastmasters in the Central Joaquin Valley of California. He was preceded in death by brothers Duane and Richard. Survivors include four children, Catherine Schroer of Madera, Calif., Brenda Music of Las Vegas, Renee Proctor of Caruthers, Calif., and Kenneth Sevre of Dallas; three brothers, Dale, Roger and Ronnie; a sister, JoAnn Meyers; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
John Potoski, 87, of Sheridan died Monday, July 2, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Dorsey Lee Brisch Jr., 62, of Sheridan died Friday, June 29, 2001, at his home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peters Episcopal Church with Kevin Jones officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Brisch was born Feb. 28, 1939, in St. Louis to Dorsey and Anna (Sanders) Brisch. The family moved to Wyoming while he was a child. He attended schools in Hanna and later served in the U.S. Navy. He married Marjorie Annette Brewer Aug. 4, 1962, in Hanna. They moved to California, where he was a state Highway Patrolman. He then worked for IBM in service repair in California and Wyoming until retiring. He continued as an IBM consultant after retirement. He enjoyed sailing, snowmobiling, four-wheeling and hunting and loved his grandchildren. He belonged to the National Rifle Association and the Sailing Association and was a member of Alcova Yacht Club. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, David Lee and Jeff, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Gina Brisch of Sheridan and Julie Ann Brisch of Gillette; a brother, Art of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Sharon Campbell of Lander and Charlotte McCollough of Laramie; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Marjorie Arlene Newman, 77, of Casper died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Life Care Center. She was mother of Rick Newman of Sheridan. Services were June 27 in Highland Park Community Church with the Rev. Linda Lann of Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville. Bustard Funeral Home handled arrangements. Mrs. Newman was born July 22, 1923, in Hawks Springs to Howard Clint and Berenice (Rittenour) Guptill. She was a 1940 graduate of Natrona County High School in Casper. She married Leo B. Newman Jr. June 14, 1942, in Kimball, Neb. They opened Newmans Grocery & Market in Casper in 1950. They were members of Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church, and she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and active in the Presbyterian Womens Association. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Maxine Hacker. Other survivors include children Terry Newman of Glenrock, Arlene Fischer, Debra Campbell and Brett Newman, all of Casper; a sister, Donna Kirkpatrick of Silverdale, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
James H. Van VanAlstyne, 75, of Gillette died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services were June 22 at the Black Hills National Cemetery with full military honors by Post 42 Honor Guard of Gillette. The Rev. Dwight Peterson officiated. Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan handled local arrangements. Mr. VanAlstyne was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Schenectady, N.Y., to James H. and Mary (Adams) VanAlstyne. He served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II, and was honorably discharged Dec. 25, 1945. He enlisted in the Air Force May 3, 1950, and served in Korea during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged Feb. 12, 1954. He later earned a degree from State Teachers College in Minot, N.D., and taught at Regent, N.D., and Columbia Falls, Mont. He was a member of the American Legion Post 42 in Gillette. He lived at the Sheridan VAMC before his death. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn of Gillette; two sons, James of Gillette and Carl Roy of Everett, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Shelley Schipke of Tupelo, Miss., and Renea OConnor of Gillette; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Wilbur J. Boston, 71, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 30, 2001, in Billings Deaconess Hospital. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, the Rev. Arthur Maendl officiating. Mr. Boston was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Cresbard, S.D., to John and Mabel (Poffenbarger) Boston. The family moved to Sturgis, S.D., where he grew up and graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and returned to Sturgis to marry Martha Holt on May 11, 1957. He worked for the V.A. Medical Center in Sturgis until transferring to Sheridan in 1959. Mr. Boston was a member of Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, camping, reading and playing with his dog, Dakota. He loved his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Martha Boston; daughters Kristie Marquess of Billings and Kathy Boston of Boise, Idaho; brothers Dean Boston of Coeur dAlene, Idaho, and Robert Boston of Spokane, Wash.; and two grandchildren. Hazel Betty Gross, 94, mother of Genevieve Haworth of Parkman, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Big Horn County (Mont.) Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bullis Funeral Chapel, Hardin, Mont. Cremation will follow. Born April 4, 1907, to Erle and Susanna Baker, she grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma before settling on a ranch at Toluca, Mont. She married Frank Gross on Sept. 11, 1925, in Hardin. They ranched in Wyola, Mont., where Mrs. Gross was postmaster for 33 years. She moved to Hardin in 1981. After her husband died in 1982, she visited area hospitals and nursing homes daily to support ailing friends and other patients. She enjoyed stamp collecting, gardening, and corresponding with friends and family. In addition to her husband, a brother, Howard, and a grandson preceded her in death. Besides her daughter, survivors include two sons, Erle Gross, Hardin, and William Gross, Roseburg, Ore.; a sister, Edna Wrenchey, Seattle; a brother, Robert (Reve) Baker, Kent, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Dallas W. Goldman, 80, died Tuesday, June 19,
2001, at Sheridan V.A. Medical Center.

handled local arrangements. Mr. Goldman was born Aug. 9, 1920, in
Griffin, Ind., one of 13 children of Louis and Martha Goldman. He
was injured in Germany in World War II while serving in the U.S.
Army. After the war, he worked as an oil field derrick hand. Mr.
Goldman enjoyed fishing, camping and music, and he loved people.
He was preceded in death by three children and all his siblings.
Survivors include daughter, Brenda Goldman of Casper; six
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He attended high school and married Marie Felde in Laurel in September 1939. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and belonged to Elks Lodge and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, Don and Jack Wasson of Sheridan; daughter Shirley McPheeters of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. John Andryanoff, 53, of Sheridan died Friday, June 15, 2001. He was born May 27, 1948, to Olga (Tatikowa) and Arlsan Andrijanoff in Munich, Germany. He moved to the United States at age 3 and grew up in New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include five brothers and sisters and one son.
