Former Lander resident Dave LeRoy Wheeler, 77, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, while visiting in Lander. He was the father of four Sheridan residents. Memorial services were 11 a.m. today at the Veterans Memorial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lander, under direction of Hudsons Funeral Home. Mr. Wheeler was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Webster, S.D., to Albert LeRoy and Nettie June (Snipstead) Wheeler. The family moved to Hill City, Minn., when he was a child, and he attended school there and worked on the family farm until he entered military service. He served briefly in the Navy then enlisted in the Army. He married Alice Marie Wagner Sept. 22, 1951, in Hill City. They moved to Lander in 1962. He worked for U.S. Steel for 33 years and was grievance man for the United States Steelworkers of America and vice president of his local union. He was a member of the American Legion, Don Stough Post 33, was department commander of the State of Wyoming American Legion in 1981 and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Lander Shrine Club. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters. Survivors include three sons, Steven and Craig, both of Sheridan, and Ken of Kaycee; two daughters, Lori Burgess and Jeanne Wheeler-Loveland, both of Sheridan; three brothers, Lyle of San Antonio, Jack of Davenport, Iowa, and Fred of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two sisters, Ellen Wagner of Grand Rapids, and Sylvie Burke of Esterville, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Waldo "Irish" Leach, 87, of Sheridan died Friday, July 26, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Leach was born Oct. 5, 1914, in Sheridan to George and Eurie (Beans) Leach. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He worked in the shipyards in Bremerton, Wash., for two years during World War II. He returned to Sheridan and married Doris "Mickey" Brown April 19, 1947. He worked for Montana Dakota Utilities as an apprentice and was a pipe-fitter-serviceman for 43 years until he retired Feb. 1, 1979. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, square dancing, round dancing and ballroom dancing. He tied flies for the Ritz in Sheridan and Sports Lure in Buffalo. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a son, Rick of Sheridan; a daughter, Lou Ann Helmes of Lander; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Keith LeRane Long Sr., 71, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 20, 2002, in the Denver VA Medical Center of cancer. Cremation has taken place. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Colonial Drive in Sheridan. Graveside services will follow. Mr. Long was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Big Horn to Alma Walker Long and Harry A. Long. He attended schools in Big Horn and Sheridan and was an All-State athlete in basketball and football. He attended Utah State University in Logan on a football scholarship. He completed his education at Sheridan College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-54 in the Korean War. He received a Purple Heart. He returned to Sheridan and worked for the Kendrick Cattle Company on the OW Ranch starting in 1955. He married Alice M. Starks Feb. 14, 1955, in Sheridan. He worked as carpet installer in Sheridan and surrounding areas until he retired in 1995.He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, cooking, sports and playing cards. He also was active as a 4-H adviser and a member of the Blue Sky Saddle Club, WyoTanna Chariot Club and Elks and was a Normative Services transition parent. He was preceded in death by brothers Junior and Jerry Long, sisters Lois Hughes and Garna Taggart and a son, Keith Jr. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; two daughters, Kristyanne Kawulok of Ranchester and Cheryle Bradley of Sheridan; and a grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harlan Judson Gentzler, 88, of Hyattville died Wednesday morning, July 24, 2002, at Beehive Assisted-Living Homes in Worland. He was the father of Jerry Gentzler of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the United Methodist Church in Basin with the Rev. Sara Power officiating. Burial will be in Mount View Cemetery in Basin. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. today in the Atwood Family Funeral Directors Chapel in Basin. Donna Whaley, 75, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 21, 2002, in the Westview Health Care Center. Visitation is 9 a.m. until noon Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday in the Sheridan Eagles Cemetery with Pastor Barry Moen officiating. Mrs. Whaley was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Minneapolis to George and Eldina (Lent) Stephens. She married Frederick Whaley Sept. 9, 1950, in Washakie County. She enjoyed collecting dolls and taught ceramics and china painting. She was a member of the 700 Club. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Grant, Martin, Garth and Howard Stephens; and a great-grandson. Survivors include a daughter, Eldina "Ellie" Taylor of Boston; a son, David of Sheridan; a sister, Virginia Dutton of Marbleton; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. William Ross Stapleton, 77, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County of heart failure. A reception will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sheridan Square. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Stapleton was born July 7, 1925, in Helena, Mont., to Maggie Hathaway and Melvin Hudson. He was adopted by the Stapleton family when he was 1 year old. He grew up and graduated from high school in Billings. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was aviation machinist mate on the aircraft carrier Intrepid for three years. He came to Sheridan after his service and apprenticed to an architect, learning the art of drafting and designing buildings. Among projects he worked on was the Hammer Chevrolet building. His jobs over the years included draftsman, ranch hand, log truck driver, construction carpenter and crew boss. He lived in other areas of the state, returning to Sheridan in 1980. He married Mary Alice Rose in 1988 in Sheridan after meeting her in Bible study class. He enjoyed fishing, photography, cooking and computers. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a son, Charles W. Bleak of Denver; a daughter, Barbara Martin of Alexandria, Va.; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. RANCHESTER Sula P. Bradley, 93, of Ranchester died Sunday, July 21, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Bradley was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Howard County, Texas, to Robert and Alice (Woodward) Harvey. She married Fred Bradley May 4, 1929. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed rug weaving and, in later years, traveling and visiting family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, on May 4, 1977; and by two daughters, Alice Charlene Vann and Alverna Dale Ludolph. Survivors include four daughters, Patsy Ruth McKinney of El Cajon, Calif., LeVauna Melton of Tulsa, Okla., Lauretta Scobee of Ranchester and Mary Beth Richard of Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Gussie Alice Cornell of Snowflake, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Karmae Rushin, 66, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her residence. Cremation has taken place, and private memorial services are planned. A celebration of Mrs. Rushins life will be noon Thursday at the Elks Lodge 520. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Rushin was born Dec. 15, 1935, in Monarch to Karl A. and Clara M. (McIntosh) Hofmeier. She married Lee Rushin Nov. 25, 1953, in Sheridan. She was a 1954 graduate of Sheridan High School. The couple moved to Fort Worth, Texas, after her graduation. They later divorced, and she returned to Sheridan in 1979. She enjoyed flower gardening, quilting, baking and candy making. She was a member of Eastern Star and Eagles 186. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Beverly Ann Muneta; and a brother, Richard Hofmeier. Survivors include five daughters, Cheryl Ann Wall of Cody, Clara Mae Sharp of Fort Worth, Texas, Beverly Gay Henson of Auburn, Wash., and Karlee Sue Rushin and Erica Rae Rushin, both of Sheridan; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sheridan-native Marlin C. Cox, 67, Ten Sleep, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Denver VA Medical Center after a long illness. Cremation has taken place, and there will be no services at his request. Born Sept. 4, 1934, in Sheridan to Clifford and Retha Cox, he lived in this area until 1949, when his father was transferred from Story to Ten Sleep by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. He graduated from Ten Sleep High School and attended Powell Community College. He served four years in the Air Force. He married Sharon Michael on Sept. 13, 1963, in Sheridan. Mr. Cox loved his grandchildren, the Big Horn Mountains, and hunting and fishing. Survivors include two daughters, Jean of Billings and Donna of Ten Sleep; a son, Carter, Ten Sleep; a sister, Carmen, Gig Harbor, Wash.; an aunt; four grandchildren; and numerous cousins.Memorials may benefit Ten Sleep Fire Department.

He worked for a time as a mechanic in the coal mining industry after graduating from high school. He married Joyce E. Childers June 21, 1995, in Texas. They later moved to Bear Lodge in Dayton. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Fred; a sister, Lois Ann Simpson; and a brother, Fred. Survivors include his wife of Dayton; a daughter, Kathryn of Worland; a stepson, Wayne A. Deatherage of Guymon, Okla.; three stepdaughters, Melissa Hazlitt and Joyce A. John M. "Boots" Blatt, 79, of Indio, Calif., died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was father of Julianne "Dee Dee" Connell of Sheridan. Mr. Blatt was born May 14, 1923, in Hamburg, Germany, to naturalized American citizens Robert Blatt Sr. and Anita Rhode Blatt. The family came to the United States when he was 6 months old and lived in Pennsylvania 10 years and Seattle three years before moving to California. Mr. Blatt graduated from high school in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps. He became a P-38 fighter pilot, flying 44 combat missions in the South Pacific. He attended Stanford University for two years, majoring in industrial engineering, after World War II. He and his older brother, Bob, were members of the 1948 U.S. Olympic Ski Team that competed in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He worked in agriculture, managing the Janss Corp. properties in the Coachella Valley and later farmed his own properties. He was a co-founder of Palco Linings and Pacific Lining Co., which lined golf-course and recreational lakes and designed and built water features for commercial and residential developments. Survivors include his wife, Marcia Newcomb Blatt; two other children, Michael of Fillmore, Calif., and Kelly of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a brother, Herb, of Bermuda Dunes, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Ernest "Larry" Harvey, 63, of Sheridan died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Terral Bearden officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Harvey was born Nov. 18, 1938, to Virgil and Dora (Carter) Harvey in Fort Collins, Colo. He graduated from high school, married Darlene Struble and entered the Air Force for four years, serving in the Philippines. The couple lived 22 years in Seattle, where he worked as a mechanic and truck driver. He moved to Sheridan in 1990 after his wife died. He married Carla Pritchett Nov. 19, 1998, in Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing, boating, golf, bowling, darts and spending time with his wife and grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Hunzelman, and a brother, Walter. Ruby Fay Davis, 91, of Batesville, Ark., died Monday, July 15, 2002. She was mother of Carla Logan of Dayton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking. John E. Dollison, 81, of Newcastle died in Newcastle Thursday, July 11, 2002. He was father of Sheridan attorney Fred Dollison. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Leslie Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military graveside services, under direction of Worden Funeral Directors. A gathering of family and friends will be 7-8:30 p.m. today in the Worden Chapel. Mr. Dollison was born Oct. 21, 1920, in Butler County, Neb., to Fred V. and Flossie (Prell) Dollison. He was a 1938 graduate of high school in David City, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 to December 1945 and was a gunners mate. He served in the Wyoming National Guard from November 1946 to October 1975, achieving the rank of first sergeant. He received the Wyoming National Guard Meritorious Achievement Medal, the state National Guard Association Medal for Excellence and the Denver Post Honor Award. He was a rancher, an employee of Gray Refinery and a tool pusher for Updike Bros. Well Servicing from 1950 until retirement. Sheridan native Donald Clark Loucks Sr., 88, of Casper died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in Wyoming Medical Center. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Park Community Church with Pastor Milo Miller from the Highland Park Community Church officiating. Viewing will be 4-8 p.m. Monday in Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Mr. Loucks was born Oct. 12, 1913, in Sheridan to Harry A. and Kathryn (Eagan) Loucks. He attended schools in Sheridan, Cheyenne and the University of Wyoming in Laramie. He married Holly B. Gosney June 30, 1940, at First Methodist Church in Casper. In his younger years he worked summers at the Post Office in Yellowstone National Park and in the fall for the Holly Sugar Corporation in Sheridan. He moved to Casper in 1938 where he operated a dental laboratory until 1967 when he became general manager of Community TV of Wyoming in Casper. He retired in 1977. Over the years he worked with the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and the Rocky Mountain Cable TV Association. He was a member of the Lions Club, Masonic organizations, Elks, the Shrine and Highland Park Community Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn LaVelle, and an infant brother. Survivors include his wife, of Casper; a daughter, Linda Olsen of Fair Oaks, Calif.; two sons, Donald C. Jr. and Carl R. "Bunky", both of Casper; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Robert J. Dempsey, 51, of Sheridan died Friday, July 5, 2002, in Deaconess Billings Clinic after a short battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Dempsey was born Aug. 18, 1950, to Robert E. and LaVonne (Lash) Dempsey in Casper. He was a 1968 graduate of high school in Belle Fourche, S.D., and attended college for a time. He married Patricia L. Meyer in 1970 in Casper. They moved to Sheridan in 1974. They divorced in 1982. Mr. Dempsey married Charlene "Char" Swearngin Aug. 26, 1989, in Sheridan. He worked 25 years for Decker Coal Co. He was founding member and drummer of the band Cruisin. He founded the local Gold Wing Road Riders Chapter, the Big Horn Mountain Cruisers, and was chapter director for one year and Wyoming District director for three years. He loved playing with the band, motorcycling, woodworking, golfing, playing tennis and travel. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1972 and the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He coached Little League seven years and was head coach for the Sheridan Little League All-State Team for two years. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a daughter, Geraldine Patch, of Sheridan; a son, Chris, of Great Falls, Mont.; his father of Quitman, Texas; his mother, LaVonne Davis, of Casper; a sister, Vicki Young, of Miles City, Mont.; two brothers, Kris Robins of Kirksville, Mo., and Dale Dempsey of Las Vegas; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Former Sheridan resident Elmer Jay "Jiggs" Witzel, 84, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at his home in Riverton. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Methodist church in Riverton with the Rev. Earl Detweiler officiating. Mr. Witzel was born June 6, 1918, in Rapplejay, Mont. He married Lorna Schedlock Nov. 10, 1946, in Sheridan. Mr. Witzel was retired from the Fremont County Weed and Pest. He was preceded in death by his wife and by siblings Earl, Kelly, Ernie, Henry, Curly, Geraldine, Gladys and Glenda. Survivors include a son, Alvin of Riverton; a daughter, Linda Davis of Riverton; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Thomas Red Wolf Sr., 69, Wyola, Mont., area rancher, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, in the Crow Agency, Mont., IHS Hospital. He was stepfather of Ginger (Garland) Howe and brother of Doris Old Coyote, both of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday in the Lodge Grass, Mont., First Crow Indian Baptist Mission. Interment will be in Lodge Grass Cemetery under direction of Bullis Mortuary of Hardin, Mont. Mr. Red Wolf was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Wyola to Charlie and Edith Little Nest Red Wolf. He was a descendant of Crow scout Mitch Boyer and Chief Two Belly. He was educated in Wyola and Pierre, S.D., then began ranching southwest of Wyola. He raised quarter horses and owned the first quarter horse in Big Horn County. He was honored at the 2001 Crow Fair as the originator of the Crow-bred quarter horse race. He was an active calf and team roper and involved in the Indian relay circuit in local and area rodeos including Cheyenne Frontier Days. He married Gail L. Morrison in 1972 in Sheridan. They made their home on the family ranch. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and three sisters, Martha Jack Rabbit, Beverly Bull Tail and Alice Red Wolf. Other survivors include his wife, of the family ranch; a son, Thomas Jr. of Wyola; three stepsons, Manuel Morrison, George Little Light and Allie Little Light, all of Wyola; adopted sons Richard Old Coyote of Wyola and Jason Bird in Ground of Wyoming; a sister, Edith Jack Rabbit of Wyola; special grandson Isiah Zane Red Wolf; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Shelby Anne Ingalls, infant daughter of Holli and Jeffrey Ingalls of Sheridan, was stillborn Saturday, June 29, 2002. A memorial service for Frank and Jacqueline Mae Scott Poulsen will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with Father John Norton officiating. Mr. Poulsen died March 7, 2002, in Sun City, Ariz. Mrs. Poulsen died June 25, 2002, in Sheridan. They owned and operated Sheridan Laundry for more than 40 years. Mr. Poulsen was from Copenhagen, Denmark. Mrs. Poulsen was born Jan. 8, 1923, in Billings to Ralph and Sharlet (Hays) Scott. They met while she was in the Marines and he was in the Merchant Marines. They married in the mid-1940s in Long Beach, Calif. They moved to Billings in 1952 to manage a laundry, and came to Sheridan in 1957 to manage the Sheridan Laundry. They later purchased the business. Mrs. Poulsen was a homemaker in addition to a businesswoman. Mr. Poulsen was a member of Sheridan Rotary, the Shrine and the Elks Club for many years, and an avid golfer. He was a member of the Sheridan County School District 1 board of trustees in the 1970s. Survivors include one daughter, Pat Sampson of Story; three sons, Steve of Sheridan, Ralph of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Greg of Greg of San Jose, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
