Marian Elizabeth Redle Kuzma

Sheridan native Marian Elizabeth Redle Kuzma, 74, of Billings died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, of complications related to congestive heart failure. Visitation is 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. today and 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. A rosary vigil will be 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church in Billings. Mrs. Kuzma was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Sheridan to Marion and Frank Redle. She attended Holy Name School and graduated from Sheridan High School. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1953 from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kan. She worked in public relations at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio, after graduation. She returned to Sheridan and worked in public relations for a local radio station. She married John David Kuzma of Monarch on Dec. 27, 1956, at Holy Name Church in Sheridan. They moved to Great Falls, Mont., and, in 1959, to Billings. She worked for Easter Seals as an administrative assistant from 1977 until 1999, when she retired. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. She enjoyed reading, listening to music and watching classic movies. She was interested in history and current events and was fond of animals, especially cats. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997. Survivors include her daughters, Judy Kuzma of Gaithersburg, Md., Barbara Akers of Kansas City, Mo., Grace Reif of Shepherd, Mont., Veronica Kuzma of Billings and Beth Kuzma of El Paso, Texas; a son, Bill of Billings; a brother, David Redle of Akron; and eight grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Easter Seal Society, 1130 16th St. W., Billings, MT 59102, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

 

Tamera Legerski

Former Sheridan resident Tamera Legerski, 38, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in Minneapolis as the result of a car accident. Viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael McMillan officiating.

Juanita M. Dunn

Juanita M. Dunn, 94, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Cindy Shipley officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Dunn was born March 21, 1910, in San Francisco to Clarence and Geneva (Danielson) Dowen. She grew up and attended schools in San Francisco and Oakland, Calif. She married Phillip H. Dunn June 4, 1928, in Oakland. They moved to Sheridan in 1947. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, gardening and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Simon and Norma Legerski, both of Sheridan; two stepbrothers of California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Lois Marie Abel

Lois Marie Abel, 83, of Sheridan died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside memorial service will be in late August in Patoka Cemetery in French Lick, Ind. Arrangements are by Brosmer-Drabing Funeral Home of French Lick. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Abel was born May 31, 1921, in Orange County, Ind., to Monroe and Maudie (McFarland) Flick. She grew up and attended schools in Orange County and was a 1940 graduate of French Lick High School. She married Harry Boyd Abel March 26, 1941, in Orange County. They moved to Louisville, Ky., in 1941. Mr. Abel died in 1988, and Mrs. Abel moved to Sheridan that year to be near her son. She was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Survivors include a son, Stephen Boyd of Sheridan; three brothers, Calvin Flick of Florida, Delbert Flick of Carmel, Ind., and Norman Flick of Indianapolis; and two grandchildren.

James R. Reece

Former Big Horn resident James R. Reece, 56, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Memphis, Tenn. Private memorial services will be at a later date. Roller-Citizens Funeral Home of West Memphis, Ark., is handling arrangements. Mr. Reece was born in Gas City, Ind., to Richard and Norma Reece. He lived in Big Horn from 1976-80. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his children, Kyvonne Sands, Jamie Reece and James Reece Jr.; a stepdaughter, Maryann Bodkins; two brothers, Ron of Story and Mark of Marion, Ind.; a sister, Tammy Reece of Pierceton, Ind.; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Mary T. Haratyk

Former Sheridan resident Mary T. Haratyk, 89, of Boise, Idaho, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Boise. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Halvey officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Mrs. Haratyk was born July 15, 1915, in Kleenburn to John and Julia (Antonio) Legerski. She grew up and attended school in Ranchester before the family moved to a farm on Kruze Creek near Big Horn. She finished her education in Big Horn. She married Mike Haratyk Jan. 20, 1935, in Sheridan. They lived on the Legerski farm until the beginning of World War II, when they moved to the Haratyk farm on Meade Creek. The Haratyks lived on most of the ranches from Banner to Rapid Creek, including the Bar 13 on Meade Creek, the Triangle “T” on Rapid Creek and the Hidden Valley Ranch above Big Horn. Mrs. Haratyk was noted for her cooking on all the ranches. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Big Horn Women's Club. She enjoyed cooking, playing bingo, fishing and traveling with her husband to visit family. Mr. Haratyk died in 1985, and Mrs. Haratyk moved to Boise in 1988. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Mike and John, both of Boise; five brothers, John, Walter and Louis Legerski of Sheridan, William Legerski of Wheatland and Andy Legerski of Casper; a sister, Alma Kilmarx of Dickson, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

George Miech

George Miech, 84, of Sheridan died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. At his request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Miech was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Kooi to Joseph and Anna (Demchok) Miech. He grew up in Ulm and attended the Coal Creek School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to Sheridan after the service and married Lois Marie Bartenhagen June 28, 1945, in Hardin, Mont. The couple made their home in the Sheridan area. Mr. Miech was a retired boiler plant operator for Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cribbage. He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter. Survivors include three sons, Bill of Helena, Mont., Bud of Casper and Brad of Big Horn; three daughters, Sharon Brantz and Wyla Cotton, both of Sheridan, and Debbie Thompson of Casper; a brother, Edward of Sheridan; three sisters, Rose Woodward of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Mable Rothwell of Cheyenne and Edna Fry of Malibu, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Cirea M. Trujillo, 76, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 25, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Eagles Cemetery. Mrs. Trujillo was born Aug. 30, 1927, in San Luis, Colo., to Pasqual and Christina (Martinez) Sanchez. She married Silviano Trujillo Nov. 21, 1941, in Taos, N.M. The couple moved to Sheridan soon after. She enjoyed canning jellies, hot peppers and other foods, bingo, gardening, and fishing and hunting in the Big Horn Mountains. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Cora Trujillo. Survivors include four sons, Silviano Jr., Andy and Silviano III, all of Sheridan, and Robert of San Diego; two daughters, Josephine Rosalez and Elizabeth Lewis, both of Sheridan; two brothers, Archie Sanchez and Arthur Sanchez, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Vangie Mesa and Annie Bembo, both of Douglas; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

George Miech, 84, of Sheridan died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Mary Teresa Haratyk, 89, formerly of Sheridan, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Boise, Idaho. Funeral vigil will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. William Halvey as celebrant. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Jack R. Van Dyke

A memorial service for Jack Robert Van Dyke, 60, of Ranchester will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Encampment. Adams Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements, initially said the service would be in Saratoga. Mr. Van Dyke died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his residence. His obituary was published in Monday's Sheridan Press.

Mary Catherine `Kitty' Brooks

Mary Catherine “Kitty” Brooks, 80, of Dayton died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Sheridan's Westview Health Care Center after a battle with cancer. Graveside services were this morning in Dayton Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Logan officiating. A memorial service is planned at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Brooks was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Burlington Junction, Mo., to Charles E. and Mary (Cochran) Puett. She grew up in the Burlington Junction and Fullmore (Mo.) areas and attended school in Burlington Junction. She moved to San Diego during World War II. She married Bert Brooks Jr. of Sheridan in San Diego while he was stationed there as a Marine. They moved to Basin in 1946 and started Big Horn Monument Co., which they operated for 18 years. They moved to Billings in 1964, then to Dayton in 1965. Mrs. Brooks worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital until 1987, when she retired as a certified nurse's aide. She was a Boy Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader in Basin and was a past worthy matron and 50-year member of Lewisia Chapter 16, Order of the Eastern Star, there. She also was a past guardian of Job's Daughters in Basin and a member of American Legion Auxiliary. In Dayton she was chaplain of the Sheridan American Legion Auxiliary and a past noble grand of the Forest Rebekah's Lodge 18 of Dayton before transferring to the Diamond Rebekah Lodge 8 of Buffalo. She also belonged to Business and Professional Woman's Club of Sheridan and Dayton Benefit Club and did volunteer work for other clubs in Dayton. She was a past member of United Methodist Church of Basin and First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan. She was a hostess at the Hans Kleiber Cabin in Dayton for about five years. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains, knitting afghans, working in her yard, visiting family and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters and four brothers. Survivors include a son, Bert Randall Brooks of Mansfield, Texas; two daughters, Trudy Jean Brooks of Sheridan and Judy Lea VanNice Bolstad of Big Fork, Mont.; a sister, Charlotte Prater of Savannah, Mo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Dayton Fire and Rescue in care of Dayton Town Hall, P.O. Box 100, Dayton, WY 82836.

 

Jack Robert Van Dyke

Jack Robert Van Dyke, 60, of Ranchester died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with military graveside honors by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. A memorial will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Presbyterian Church in Saratoga. Mr. Van Dyke was born Nov. 11, 1943, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to Jack and Vyrna Van Dyke. He was a 1961 graduate of Colorado Springs High School. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and was stationed in San Diego. He was honorably discharged in 1965. He moved to Burns and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He married Linda Peterson Aug. 31, 1968, in Saratoga, and they made their home in Rawlins. They moved to Encampment in 1974 and to Sheridan in 1991. Mr. Van Dyke commuted to Encampment for his job with the railroad until 1993, when he retired. The family then moved to Ranchester. He was a member of American Legion and competed in the Dayton Billiard League. He enjoyed golf, playing pool and poker, fishing, boating and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike of Denver and Lance of Encampment; two daughters, Jackie Aguilar of Laramie and Erin Beatty of Colorado Springs; his mother, Vyrna Board of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his stepfather, Alex Pavlica of Cheyenne; two brothers, Michael and Zane Pavlica, both of Burns; two sisters, Donna Wells of Encampment and Linda Daley of Fort Lauderdale; and four grandchildren.

Mary L. Youngman

Mary Lenore Youngman, 75, of Roberts, Mont., died Saturday, July 17, 2004, in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. She was mother of Elaine Shorten and Jessie Huston, both of Sheridan. Funeral services were Tuesday at Roberts United Methodist Church. Burial of ashes will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Little Big Horn Battlefield National Cemetery. Arrangements are with Dahl Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge, Mont. Mrs. Youngman was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Laurel, Mont., to Albert and Mary (Schmidt) Crans. She attended schools in Roberts and Laurel and was a 1947 graduate of Red Lodge High School. She worked in the Laurel Cafe and the Red Lodge Bakery. She was a Victory Farm volunteer and a member of 4-H. She married Virgil B. Shorten June 19, 1947. They farmed outside the Fox community. Mrs. Youngman taught Sunday school at Roberts United Methodist Church and was president and secretary of Extension Homemakers. Mr. Shorten died in 1972. In June 1973, she married John W. Youngman. The couple moved to Ohio. Mrs. Youngman was active in church and American Legion, among other organizations, and became an avid teddy bear collector. She enjoyed crafting. Mr. Youngman died Jan. 1, 1994. Mrs. Youngman moved back to Roberts in April 2003 to be near family and friends. Survivors include two other children, Eugene Shorten of Copper Creek, Alaska, and Trisha Shorten of Cushing, Okla.; a stepson, Michael (Shelby) Youngman of Brewster, Ohio; a sister, Betty (Clifford) Long; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

 

Charles Marton

Charles Marton, 79, of Buffalo died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in Johnson County Health Care Center. He was father of Jane Buell of Clearmont and Kate Johnson of Big Horn. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Charles Taylor as celebrant. A vigil for the deceased will be 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military graveside services by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Mr. Marton was born Nov. 21, 1924, in Buffalo to Bernard and Catherine Marton. He was a 1942 graduate of Johnson County High School. He enlisted in the Navy after graduation and served on PT Boat 299 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was discharged from the military in 1945 and returned to the family ranch in Johnson County. He married Patricia Ripley April 10, 1950, in Buffalo. Mr. Marton retired from ranching in 1984. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a Third and Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, a member of Wyoming and Johnson County Wood Growers and a member of the Selective Service Board for Johnson County for 12 years. He also belonged to the American Legion, was a lifetime member of the VFW, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the mountains and hunting. He golfed and had a hole-in-one and a double eagle to his credit. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and James. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Charles of Casper and Jack and Tim, both of Buffalo; two other daughters, Denise Marton of Laramie and Lisa Kinzer of Buffalo; a brother, John of Buffalo; a sister, Bernadette Arno of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Memorials may be made to the Suzie Bowling Lawrence Hospice in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Joan G. Maxwell

Former Sheridan resident Joan Gierisch Maxwell, 65, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at her daughter's home in Pleasant Grove, Utah, following a series of strokes. Funeral services were July 9 at the Pella Ward Chapel. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley, Utah. Arrangements were with Rasmussen Funeral Home in Burley. Mrs. Maxwell was born Aug. 9, 1938, in Burley to Ralph Kramer and Cloteal Bingham Gierisch. She spent her early childhood in Westcliff, Colo., where she attended a one-room schoolhouse. The family later moved to Denver, then to Sheridan. She married Leroy “Max” Maxwell Sept. 1, 1956, in Sheridan. The family lived in Fort Collins, Colo., and in Ashland and Salem, Ore. Mrs. Maxwell and her children moved to Burley, then to Orem, Utah. Mrs. Maxwell returned to Burley in 1984. She worked for much of her life as a clerk at J.C. Penney, manager of a gift shop in Orem and as owner of Farmer Joan's in Burley. For the last several years she worked at the South Idaho Press while caring for her parents and living on their farm. She enjoyed photography. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Darwin R. and Ronald A. Gierisch. Survivors include five children, Sheree M. Bench of Pleasant Grove, Daniel L. Maxwell of Syracuse, Utah, David M. Maxwell of Burley, and Kerri M. Bradford and Jonathan L. Maxwell, both of Orem; two sisters, Marie G. Larsen of South Jordan, Utah, and Elaine G. Henderson of West Valley City, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Joan Gierisch Maxwell Fund in care of Wells Fargo Bank, P.O. BUFFALO — Rita Paden, 75, of Buffalo died Monday, July 19, 2004, at her residence after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Charles Taylor and Dick Edgerton officiating. A vigil for the deceased will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Walter J. Taylor

Former Sheridan resident Walter Jennings Taylor, 83, of Kirby, Mont., died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, of complications related to lung disease. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the family ranch in Kirby. Lunch will follow the service. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin, Mont. Mr. Taylor was born March 8, 1921, in New York City to Henry C. and Jeanette J. Taylor of New York and Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. He was a 1939 graduate of St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., and attended Yale University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1945. He married Shirley Hopkins April 15, 1944, in Lake Forest, Ill. He began his career with Standard Oil of New York (now Exxon Mobil Corp.). He traveled in the West looking for a ranch setting and lived briefly in Sheridan before settling in Kirby in the fall of 1948. The family did most of its business in Sheridan, according to family members. Mr. Taylor was an avid sailor and oarsman in his early years and won the 1938 and 1948 Bermuda Races. He also enjoyed skiing. He was a member of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Stillman Taylor and Peter Burr Taylor. Survivors include his wife; two sons, James of Billings and Walter “Watty” Taylor Jr. of Kirby; two daughters, Susanna Meyer of Woodbury, Minn., and Margie Taylor of Bozeman, Mont.; a sister, Jean T. Johnson of Essex, Conn.; and six grandchildren. Helen Vesta Hape, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Hape was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Burns to William Samuel and Mary Berniece (Bawden) Bishop. Mr. Bishop worked in construction, and the family moved around Wyoming. Mrs. Hape attended schools in Burns and Loveland, Colo. She married William Nolan “Tuck” Hape Nov. 24, 1933, in Fort Collins, Colo. The family moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Hape was a member of the Sheridan County CattleWomen. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a son, Chester of Sheridan; a daughter, Jackie Perry of Sheridan; two brothers, Earl Bishop of Joliet, Mont., and Harold Bishop of Billings; a sister, Thelma Nash of Billings; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Irene Melba Hitchcock

Irene Melba Hitchcock, 65, of Ulysses, Kan., died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Salina (Kan.) Regional Hospital. She was mother of Albert Leslie Hitchcock of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kan., with the Rev. Sam Bynum officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. Arrangements are with Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Mrs. Hitchcock was born July 24, 1938, in Fredonia, Kan., to Albert Berry and Deris Lorene (Crawshaw) Scroggins. The family moved to the Ulysses area in 1940. Mrs. Hitchcock was a 1956 graduate of Grant County Rural High School and had worked at L&J Implement, Duckwalls and Ansel Manufacturing. She married Arthur LeRoy Hitchcock May 24, 1956, in Ulysses. She was a member of Country View Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, bird-watching, growing plants and flowers, crocheting, crafts and being with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Iona Berger. Survivors include her husband; another son, Arthur LeRoy “Artie” Hitchcock II of Damar, Kan.; a daughter, Donna Irene McEachern of Pratt, Kan.; a brother, Arthur Scroggins of Chicago; two sisters, Iva Hindman of Satanta, Kan., and Ilene Pierce of Las Cruces, N.M.; and seven grandchildren. Henry John French, 90, of Arvada died Sunday, July 18, 2004, in the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Moore Hill Cemetery in Hulett with the Rev. Kim Carrol officiating. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Mr. French was born May 14, 1914, in Sturgis, S.D., to Abe and Mary Molitor French. He began herding sheep at an early age. He married Della Rae West Aug. 23, 1937. They divorced in 1963. He worked for various ranches in Montana and Wyoming and owned a ranch on the Powder River near Arvada for five years. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie, Jim and Joe; an infant son, William Ray; and his second son, Roy. Survivors include two daughters, D'Lynn Schye of Glasgow, Mont., and Ellen Widhalm of Great Falls, Mont.; two sons, Delbert of Arvada and Sam of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Jake of Gillette; three sisters, Helen Palmer and Clara French, both of Garden Terrace, Calif., and Mary French of Hulett; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Harold L. Crosby

Harold L. “Bing” Crosby, 79, of Rapid City died Monday, July 12, 2004, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was father of Pat Quist of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Cameron officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors by The Retired Enlisted Association. Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Mr. Crosby was born January 28, 1925, in Benkelman, Neb., to Chester and Ura (Rorabaugh) Crosby. He graduated from West High School in Denver and enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942. He saw combat duty during World War II and was part of a crew that sank a German submarine. He was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in 1945 and re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving 24 years before retiring as a master sergeant in the Air Force. His tours of duty included Germany, Kansas, Hawaii, Wyoming, California, Labrador, Nebraska and South Dakota. After he retired from the Air Force, he began a 17-year career in civil service, first as purchasing agent at the Job Corps in Nemo, S.D., then as chief of material control for the Civil Engineering Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D. He retired in 1987. He married Kathryn Ryan of Deadwood, S.D., in 1943. Mr. Crosby was a member of Rapid City Elks Lodge No. 1187 and Deadwood Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family. Other survivors include his wife; a son, Mike of Long Beach, Calif.; and five grandchildren. A memorial has been established with the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Raymond N. George, 77, of Manheim, Pa., died Saturday, July 10, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, Pa. He was father of Raymond N. Jr. and Robert C., both of Sheridan. Arrangements are with Kreamer Funeral Home Inc. of Annville, Pa. Mr. George was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Darby, Pa., to Malcolm and Helen Walker George. He was a graduate of Darby High School and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and Folsom Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed puzzles and working on his computer. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey. Brian E. Buckler, 33, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ronald Nelson and Scott Lee officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Buckler was born Feb. 24, 1971, in Sterling, Colo., to Darrell and Elaine (Ruf) Buckler. He grew up and attended schools in Sterling until 1985, when the family moved to Dayton. Mr. Buckler was a 1989 graduate of Tongue River High School. He moved to Casper in 1992 and worked for First Interstate Bank. He married Tracy Nickens Aug. 20, 1994, in Sheridan, and the couple moved to Sheridan in 1995. Mr. Buckler worked for Sheridan Community Federal Credit Union until 1998, when he went to work for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a track foreman and welder. He was chairman of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Local 1074. He enjoyed golf, basketball, softball, volleyball, hunting, mountain climbing, skiing and camping and fishing with his daughters. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Brittney and Amanda, both of Sheridan; his parents, of Sterling; a sister, Christina Pyle of Sterling; and his paternal grandmother, Sarah Buckler of Sterling. Gerard Patrick `Jerry' Kelly

Gerard Patrick “Jerry” Kelly, 56, of Story died Friday, July 9, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At his request, cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Kelly was born May 20, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Gerard and Elizabeth (Boyle) He was a career Marine, retiring in 1993 as a lieutenant colonel after 23 years of service. He was commanding officer of the Marine detachment at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. He moved to Minneapolis, where he was a software specialist for The Gartner Group. He was a black belt instructor in aikido and initiated an aikido program in the Hopkins, Minn., School District. He enjoyed marathon running, kayaking, black powder shooting, archery, bonsai artistry, horseback riding and being with his family at their vacation residence in Story. He also enjoyed reading, belonged to Rotary and was a student of American and military history. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Leslie, and two daughters, Caitlin and Torin, all of Minneapolis; and two brothers, Kevin and Michael of New York City. Sheridan County native Rose Coassin, 85, of Worland died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in St. Mary Magdalin Catholic Church in Worland. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. at Veile Mortuary Inc. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Joseph Daley officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Memorials Gardens in Worland. Mrs. Coassin was born Dec. 7, 1918, in the old mining community of Dietz, north of Sheridan, to John and Cecylia (Kiczek) Mentock. She grew up in Dietz, Acme — another nearby mining community — and Sheridan. She was a 1937 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married John Coassin Dec. 2, 1939, in the community of Monarch. They moved to Thermopolis and later lived in Kirby before moving to Acme in 1952. They moved to Worland in 1954. Mrs. Coassin was a member of St. Mary Magdalin Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary. She worked for the Ben Franklin store for 11 years and for Anthony's 18 1/2 years, retiring in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976 and by five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Thomas John of Hurricane, Utah; a daughter, Gloria Ann Hunt of Spearfish, S.D.; and two grandsons. Adella `June' McCarthy

A memorial Mass for Adella “June” Burbidge Fitzgerald McCarthy, 94, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Inurnment of ashes will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. McCarthy died Aug. 14, 2003, in Missoula, Mont. She was born June 1, 1909, on a farm six miles south of Henry, S.D. She taught school 43 years, many of them at Linden School in Sheridan, and was a substitute teacher for 17 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. McCarthy. Survivors include her daughter, Gwen Fitzgerald Cloninger of Swan Lake, Mont.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

 

Angeline Landeen

Former Sheridan resident Angeline Landeen, 96, of Logan, Utah, died near the end of June, according to her son, Bob. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Landeen was born and raised on the family homestead in northern Montana. She married Harold Landeen in 1937, and they bought the Capitol Drug Store on Main Street in 1950 and moved to Sheridan. They were members of Rotary and enjoyed square dancing. Mrs. Landeen was a longtime member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother. Survivors include two sons, four granddaughters and four great-granddaughters.

 

Florence Petrie

Sheridan native Florence Petrie, 91, of Las Vegas died Thursday, June 3, 2004. Private services have been held. Mrs. Petrie was born April 18, 1913, in Sheridan. She had lived in Las Vegas 20 years. She married Cameron R. Petrie Jan. 5, 1937. She was a member of Eastern Star and the Lady Fireman. She worked at a small dress shop after her children left home. She enjoyed crafts and oil painting, writing poetry and playing jokes on people. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and two brothers, Dean and Thomas. Survivors include a son, Dean; a daughter, Diana Walker; a sister, Vesta Ringley of Sheridan; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

 

Charles Melvin Carroll

Sheridan native Charles Melvin Carroll, 69, of Riverton died Friday, June 11, 2004, at University of Colorado Hospital following a five-month battle with esophageal cancer. A memorial service was June 21 at United Methodist Church in Riverton. Mr. Carroll was born July 17, 1934, in Sheridan to Alta (Wallace) and Granville W. Carroll. He was a 1952 graduate of Sheridan High School and was student body president. He joined the Navy and served on the aircraft carriers USS Bataan and USS Bedoing Straight. He married Clara Blakeman in 1953. They divorced in 1982. Mr. Carroll graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1958 and received his master's degree from the University of Montana-Missoula in 1963. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served as lodge grand master. He also belonged to the Shriners. He served as elementary school principal in Worland and later as field coordinator and instructor for the University of Wyoming. He was among the first employees at Central Wyoming College and served as dean of Extended Day and, later, a member of the board of directors. He and his daughter, Jodi, operated the Village Stripper in Riverton for the past nine years. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He married Bobbie Sue Lund in 1996. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Cleone, and a brother, Ira “Ike” L. Carroll. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen Welch and Jodi Edwards; two sons, Dirk and Quinn; a stepdaughter, Mitzi Voss; 11 brothers and sisters; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Flora Mae Anderson

Flora Mae Anderson, 89, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 1, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and graveside services are pending at Monument Hill Cemetery in Thermopolis. Mortimer Funeral Home of Thermopolis is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Anderson was born April 1, 1915, on the family homestead near Hugo, Colo., to William Porter and Abbie Mae (Roberts) Beer. She graduated from high school in Casper, then attended the University of Wyoming, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school for a number of years in Lusk, Casper and Thermopolis. She married Donnell O. Anderson May 24, 1940. He died Aug. 5, 1988. She moved to Sheridan in 2001. Mrs. Anderson was a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed ceramics, crocheting and sewing. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Malkuch of Sheridan; a son, Donnell of Woodland, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He grew up in Sedalia, Mo., and received his General Educational Development certificate from State Fair Community College there. He married Linda Marie (Walker) Landen Sept. 26, 2000, in Sheridan. He worked in construction, as an electrical technician and for several years, until he became dsabled, was an independent truck driver. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, collecting rocks, hunting, fishing and playing with his grandchildren and the children of neighbors and friends. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jason Eric of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Leah Gregory and Crystal Paulsen, both of Casper; his parents of Texarkana, Texas; a sister, Ginger L. LaBille of Smithton, Mo.; and two granddaughters.

Sheridan native Gordon Waddell, 74, of Casper died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in Wyoming Medical Center. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday in First United Methodist Church in Casper with the Rev. Margaret Gillikan officiating. Cremation has occurred with arrangements by Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory. Mr. Waddell was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Sheridan to Rex Leo and Vivian Berggren Waddell. He moved to Torrington in 1940 and graduated from high school in 1947. The family moved to Worland in 1947. Mr. Waddell joined the Army a year later. Her served until April 1, 1952, in Okinawa, Japan, and Pusan, Korea. He attained the rank of staff sergeant. He returned to Sheridan and enrolled in Sheridan College. He married Joyce Ann McClintock in May 1955. Mr. Waddell worked for Halliburton for 30 years, and he and his family lived in Worland, Lovell and Casper. He acquired his realtor's license and worked for Brad Bochmann in Casper until his death. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bobby, Vern, John and Dean; and a daughter, Linda Neil. Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul of Casper; a daughter, Laurie Barley of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Nancy Crabtree of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Patricia Lund of Boise, Idaho. Kaleigh Rose Ford

Kaleigh Rose Ford, 18, of Sheridan was killed Friday, July 2, 2004, in a shooting incident on Big Horn Avenue. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Sheridan High School Auditorium with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Miss Ford was born March 29, 1986, in Cheyenne to Matthew and Sandra Ford. The family moved to Sheridan in 1992. Miss Ford was a graduate of Sheridan High School. During her school years, she played basketball, was in the band and enjoyed photography, snowboarding and softball. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and participated in several church youth groups. She was planning to attend Sheridan College to pursue a degree in psychology. Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Sandy Litle and Robert Miller of Sheridan; her father of Salem, Ore.; a brother, Kerek Ford of Sheridan; four grandparents, Jim and Margaret Litle of Sheridan and Leonel and Alice Ford of Pampa, Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may benefit the Kaleigh Ford Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Gerald Wilbur Brown

Former Sheridan resident Gerald Wilbur Brown, 65, of Casper died Monday, June 28, 2004, in the Wyoming Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Oregon State Trail Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Leonard Robinson officiating. Arrangements are with Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory. Mr. Brown was born Feb. 1, 1939, in Rawlins to Gerald and Isabel Tempest (Charter) Brown. He grew up and attended school in Rawlins. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-59. He married JoAnn Jelsma in February 1960. They were later divorced. He married Nancy Jelsma in February 1996 in Las Vegas. He was a heavy-equipment operator in the copper and coal-mining industries and raised his family in Sheridan and Utah before moving to Casper in 1994. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Leslie; three brothers, Wayne, Ernie and Melvin; and two sisters, Irene Young and Susan Brown. Survivors include his wife; a son, Gerald of Liberty Hills, Texas; two daughters, Jackie LaBrake and Julie Crago of Laramie; a brother, Ray of Rawlins; three stepdaughters, Kim and Amanda Jelsma of Texas and Tracy Warner of Casper; 15 grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

 

Faye Ella DeMonney

Sheridan native Faye Ella DeMonney, 80, of Buffalo died Friday, July 2, 2004, in Casper. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Willow Grove Cemetery with the Rev. George Greer officiating. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mrs. DeMonney was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Sheridan to Harvey and Goldie Mooney. She grew up and attended school in Johnson County and was a 1942 graduate of Johnson County High School. She married Clyde DeMonney Dec. 9, 1944, in Casper. They made their home in various communities in Texas, where Mr. DeMonney was in construction work. They retired in 1976 and moved to Buffalo. Mr. DeMonney died in May 1991. Mrs. DeMonney married Pete Balden Jan. 11, 1994, in Virginia City, Mont. Mr. Balden died in May 1998. Mrs. DeMonney moved to Casper in spring 2002 to live with a granddaughter. She enjoyed riding horses, taking care of her ranch animals, playing cards and taking trips to Deadwood, S.D., and Las Vegas. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane McLaughlin. Survivors include a sister, Lula Wagner of Buffalo; two granddaughters; and five grandchildren.

Arthur J. Bougie Jr.

Arthur J. Bougie Jr., 51, of Sheridan died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in Rapid City of natural causes. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Big Horn Mountain Eagles Club with the Rev. Terral Bearden officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Bougie was born Jan. 10, 1953, in Panama to Arthur and Antoinette (Poirier) Bougie Sr. He grew up and attended schools in Tucson, Ariz. He worked in many states harvesting wheat. He married Candance Swartz Dec. 21, 1974, in California. They divorced. Mr. Bougie moved to Sheridan in 1980. He worked for Transmissions by Burt. He later owned and operated the Transmission Doctor until 1990, when he moved to Oregon. He worked in a transmission shop there. He moved to Spearfish, S.D., in 1997 and returned to Sheridan in 2003. He was past president of Big Horn Mountain Eagles. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, being in the mountains, fishing, waterskiing, snowmobiling, camping, cooking and playing on his computer. Survivors include his companion, Georgette Benbo of Rapid City; two sons, Travis and Brandon, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Michelle Channel and Kimberly Bougie, both of Sheridan; a brother, Andre of Phoenix; and nine grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Arthur Bougie Memorial Fund in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Ruth I. Howell

A celebration of the life of Ruth I. Howell, 87, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. July 17 in Dayton Community Center. Mrs. Howell died Dec. 4, 2003. The Sheridan Press published her obituary Dec. 10. Arrangements are with Dahl Funeral Chapels of Billings.

Mildred Sanchini

Mildred Sanchini, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, June 28, 2004, at her residence. At her request, cremation has taken place, and private family services will be at a later date in Pennsylvania. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Sanchini was born May 1, 1919, in Montdale, Pa., to John and Alta Calvert. She was a 1937 graduate of Montdale High School. She worked in shoe factories and a hearing aid factory. She married Aldo Sanchini in New York in 1951. They lived in New York until 1972, when they moved to Pennsylvania. Mr. Sanchini died in 1974. Mrs. Sanchini moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1978 and to Sheridan in 1998. She enjoyed playing bingo, knitting, crocheting, spending time with her son and visiting by phone with nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Carl Calvert, and four brothers and sisters. Survivors include a son, Fred Birtley of Greybull; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Anna P. Hoaglan

A graveside memorial service for Anna P. Hoaglan of Sheridan will be 3 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Mrs. Hoaglan, 84, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center. Her obituary appeared in the Jan. 6 Sheridan Press. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
