Dean Robert Whisler

Funeral services for Dean Robert Whisler, 81, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Robert Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Whisler died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at his residence. He was born April 11, 1924, in Rozet to David Riley and Vida Pearl (Duval) Whisler. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a ship's cook second class in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. He married Helen Kottraba on Sept. 14, 1946, in Lincoln, Neb. They lived in Kaycee and Gillette before moving to Sheridan in 1998. Mr. Whisler was self-employed in several occupations, including operating a drilling rig. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dean “Rusty” of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Deana May Orona of Worland; a brother, Leonard of Upton; two sisters, Evelyn Donner of Gillette and Ellen Cummings of Basin; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Nellie Mae Stuka

Visitation for Nellie Mae Stuka, 87, of Sheridan will be 2-7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Ms. Stuka died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Dietz to Joe and Anna (Wierzbicki) Stuka. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming and was an English teacher for more than 25 years in Worland. She retired in 1979. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was a member of Sheridan Heritage Center, Sheridan County Historical Society, AARP, Sheridan Woman's Club, Retired Teachers and Kappa. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anne, and three brothers, Joe, Henry and Carl. Survivors include four sisters, Wanda Godawski of Chicago, Stella Gorzalka of Sheridan and Henrietta Sutphin and Mary Weber, both of Casper; and a brother, Walter of North Carolina. Margaret Carolyn Johnston

Margaret Carolyn (Weiers/VanLoan) Johnston, 67, of Spearfish, S.D., died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at her residence. She was sister of Janice Mates of Big Horn. Visitation will be 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D., and 9-10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis. A rosary and Christian prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Church with the Rev. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will be in Bear Butte Cemetery. Mrs. Johnston was born Nov. 21, 1937, in Sturgis to Robert and Angela Ann (Weiers) Hyde. She grew up in Sturgis and moved to Newell, S.D., as a young girl. She married Arthur Johnston on Feb. 14, 1955, in Belle Fourche, S.D. The couple lived in Lead, S.D., before moving to Washington state. The family moved to various sites in the Western United States while Mr. Johnston worked in construction. In 1967, they moved to Idaho Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Johnston assisted her husband in operating a construction and trucking business. She moved to Spearfish in 1975. Survivors include a son, Michael of Spearfish; two daughters, Carol of Belle Fourche and Jane (Weiers) Lilly of Phoenix; a brother, Robert P. VanLoan of Gainesville, Texas; two other sisters, Donna Jerome of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Anita McDonald of Yuma, Ariz.; her stepfather, Morris Hafner of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; three adopted daughters, Sue Burneson, Julie Wagner and Twyla Reede; and two grandchildren.

 

Dorothy Driskill

A memorial service for Dorothy Driskill, 75, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. A reception at Knights of Columbus Hall, 301 E. Brundage St., will follow. Mrs. Driskill died Monday, July 25, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Vancil Memorial Funeral Chapel in Springfield, Ill., and a funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Vancil Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Springfield. Mrs. Driskill was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Decorah, Iowa, to Wellington and Leora (Gremm) Foltz. She grew up and attended schools in Decorah and Springfield. She married John Driskill on June 12, 1993. She was a supervisor at Horace Mann Insurance. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards. She was preceded in death by two husbands and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Amundesen and Fay Foss; a sister, Delores Prosperini; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

 

Byron Charles `Pogo' Chamberlain Jr.

Viewing for Byron Charles “Pogo” Chamberlain Jr., 52, of Sheridan will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. The family has requested that attendees wear “bright colors.” Mr. Chamberlain, an artist, athlete and educator, died Monday, July 25, 2005, after a battle with cancer. He was born June 17, 1953, in Billings to Dorothy (Halvorsen) and Byron Chamberlain Sr. He married Jane Howe on June 19, 1982, in Miles City, Mont. He was competed in track, basketball and football and quarterbacked the Billings Senior High School Broncs during his junior and senior years. He graduated from Billings Senior in 1971 and continued his education and football career at Rocky Mountain College and Eastern Montana College. He was a 1976 graduate of EMC with degrees in business and art. He worked as a commercial artist for a year before returning to Eastern, where he earned a master's degree in special education and guidance counseling. He accepted a position with Sheridan County School District 2 in 1979. He served as a learning specialist, then as a school counselor at both Sheridan Junior and Senior high schools for 26 years. He coached basketball, football and track at Sheridan Junior High School. He was assistant football coach at SHS for 13 years, during which time the Broncs won the state championship three times. Mr. Chamberlain also coached his own children for many years in community sports. He enjoyed walking with his wife, snowboarding, spending time with his family and playing handball at the YMCA. He also enjoyed old movies — particularly those from the 1970s — and could play the piano or organ by ear. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Kelsey, and son, Beau, all of Sheridan; his parents of Billings; and two sisters, Mary Ann Connors of Billings and Lori Herbaugh of Littleton, Colo. Former Sheridan resident Cathryn “Kelly” Cooley, 93, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Loveland, Colo. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception will follow at Holy Name Catholic Church.

 

Wilbur Neil `Pally' Pallesen

James A. Nisselius

James A. Nisselius, 60, of Gillette died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla. He was brother of Judy Tenney of Sheridan. Funeral services were July 19 at First Baptist Church in Gillette with the Rev. Mark Jervis officiating. Burial was in Mount Pisgah Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 42. Mr. Nisselius was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Springfield, Mo., to Jack K. and Christine (Rutherford) Nisselius. He attended Gillette elementary schools and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1964. He attended Casper College, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1965. He served four years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. His tours of duty included the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. He was honorably discharged from Norfolk, Va., in 1969. He entered the Army National Guard in 1989 and served until he was medically discharged in April. He was a member of the American Legion Drill Team for 20 years. He worked in oil fields in Campbell County, Oklahoma and Prudoe Bay, Alaska. He worked in Los Alamos, N.M., before returning to Gillette in 1978. He worked as a master welder at Jacobs Ranch Mine and later for Kennecott Corp. for 25 years. He married Anne E. Nowers on Jan. 19, 1973, in Anchorage, Alaska. They were married until March 1990. He married Barbara Jane Beck on Dec. 7, 1991, in Gillette. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gillette from the age of 12. Mr. Nisselius enjoyed collecting, especially military memorabilia. He was an expert marksman in the Army National Guard. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the USS Forrestal Association. In addition to his sister, survivors include his wife and parents, all of Gillette; sons, Matthew J. Nisselius of Tokyo, Nathan B. and Michael T. Nisselius, both of Denver, Clinton Ellyson of Commerce City, Texas, Curtis Ellyson of Sioux Falls, S. D., and James Beck of Gillette; and five grandchildren. Alvin J. `Whitey' Twite

Alvin J. “Whitey” Twite, 76, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 23, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Twite was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Carson, N.D., to Benhard and Nettie (Danielson) Twite. After graduating from high school, he worked for Lytle & Green Construction Co. as a tractor operator. He served with Company C, 83rd Engineer Contingent Battalion in the Korean War from 1951-52. He married Margie Johnson in 1958 in Pierre, S.D. After military service, he was an engineer for various construction companies, working on projects in Montana and Wyoming. He was a skilled crane operator. He belonged to Operating Engineers Local 400 of Montana and OEL 800 of Wyoming. He enjoyed boating, fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Voight; a brother, Benny; and a grandson. Survivors include four children, Pat and Jackie Twite and Susan Oltmanns, all of Sheridan, and William of New Eagle, Pa.; six sisters, Melva England of Glyndon, Minn., Lily Buchmeier of Mandan, N.D., Lila Hayes of Mesa, Ariz., Rose Gerheart of Surprise, Ariz., Grace Scrantlin of Kansas City, Mo., and Sherry Erickson of Rapid City.

William Paul `Billy Paul' Page

Funeral services for William Paul “Billy Paul” Page, 60, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home. Viewing is until 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Page died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at his residence. He was born Sept. 27, 1944, in Cleveland, Okla., to William and Emma Page. He enlisted in the Navy on Jan. 23, 1964, and was honorably discharged Jan. 19, 1968. He married Diana Lucille Martinsin on March 4, 1964, in Seattle. He was an instrument reader for Mobil Oil Co. for 20 years. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and oil painting. He was preceded in death by a sister, Enga Page. Survivors include his mother of Sheridan; his wife of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Nancy Diane Gladu of Denver and Peggy Pearl Hutton of Buffalo; a son, Jason Paul of Westlake, La.; a brother, Mason of Houston; and nine grandchildren.

 

Myrtle Elizabeth `Teeta' Schilling

Myrtle Elizabeth “Teeta” Schilling, 86, of Ranchester died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Schilling was born May 3, 1919, in Billings to Andrew and Myrtle E. (Weldon) Vasby. She grew up and attended schools in Billings and was a graduate — and honor society member — of Billings High School. She attended Polytechnic Institute in Billings and worked at the Billings Public Library while attending college. She married Otto W. Schilling on June 30, 1939, in Billings. During World War II, she worked at Mountain States Telephone. The couple moved to Casper, and Mrs. Schilling managed Chet's Toy Store for many years. After retiring in 1983, the couple moved to Ranchester. Mrs. Schilling was a past member of Oakleaf Chapter 6, Order of the Eastern Star, in Cheyenne, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Casper, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan. She was an avid doll collector and a seamstress, specializing in doll clothes. She sold doll clothes for many years at the Sheridan Center Bazaar. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing contract bridge. She also enjoyed reading and watching birds and other wild animals in her yard. She was a baseball fan since her youth, when she watched her stepfather play. She was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Mike of Cheyenne and Steve of Gillette; a brother, George Pfaff of Las Vegas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center Meals on Wheels program, 211 Smith St., Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, 335 W. Alger Ave., or the donor's choice.

 

Edward F. Westphal

Graveside services for Edward F. Westphal, 77, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Charles officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Westphal died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. He was born June 30, 1928, in Janesville, Wis., to Edward and Olive Westphal. He grew up in Janesville and was a 1946 graduate of Northwestern Military Academy there. He married Janice Gilgallon on Aug. 29, 1966, in Chicago. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a tool and dye machinist for most of his life, working for Acme Eyelet Co. in St. Charles, Ill., and later owning his own machine shop in Maywood, Ill. He lived in Villa Park, Ill., for 30 years before moving to Sheridan in July 2002. He enjoyed cooking and barbecuing. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert; two daughters, Marie and Karen; two stepdaughters, Stacie Boehm of Sheridan and Bonnie Davidson of Streamwood, Ill.; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Helga Christel Horn

Helga Christel Horn, 62, of Sheridan and La Quinta, Calif., died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, in La Quinta of pancreatic cancer. Memorial services were Monday in Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church in Palm Springs, Calif., according to an obituary published last week in The Desert Sun in Palm Springs. Burial was private with arrangements by FitzHenry Funeral Home Desert Chapel in Coachella, Calif. Mrs. Horn was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Germany to Karl Herth and Erika Graulich. She married Jerry Horn in 1994 in Pittsburgh. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Charles Giorgianni, in 1982. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Andrea Mikita of Minneapolis; a son, Rocci Giorgianni of Los Angeles; three brothers, Helmut, Herbert and Klaus Herth, all of Frankfurt, Germany; her mother, Erika Maas of Frankfurt; and eight grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Erica Lee Morrow

Tony Forman officiating. Mrs. Morrow died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at her residence after a battle with cancer. Her family was at her side. She was born Sept. 28, 1969, in Culver City, Calif., to Gerald Clarence and Susan Darlene (Pirtle) Reinhart. She had worked at Carroll Insurance as a customer service supervisor since 1999. She married Jimmy Lyn Morrow on May 6, 2000, in Sheridan. She enjoyed boating, motorcycling, camping, travel, spending time with her family, and helping others in need. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Jerry Cournaya; paternal grandparents, Barbara Wolf and Norman Reinhart; and maternal grandparents, Lewis and Virginia Pirtle. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Christina Hahn of Sheridan; a son, Raymond Hahn of Sheridan; a stepson, Samuel Stohrer of Buffalo; her mother of Sheridan; her father of Azusa, Calif.; a sister, Chandra Bitanga of Sheridan; and a brother, Eric Reinhart of Azusa. Richard Dean `Rick' Plummer

A celebration of life for Richard Dean “Rick” Plummer, 46, of Sheridan will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Tongue River Canyon with Steve Yapuncick officiating, according to a friend. Mr. Plummer died Friday, June 17, 2005, in the canyon, where he was reported to have spent his summers. He was born Sept. 4, 1958, in Manchester, N.H., to Edna Louise Plummer. He came to Sheridan in 1988. He enjoyed playing the guitar and writing. Survivors include his mother of Sandwich, N.H.; five brothers, Ronny, Joe, Billy and Norman, all of Manchester, and Phillip Hart of Casper; a son, Ricky Jr. of New Hampshire; and his life companion, Sharon Foster.

 

Josephine M. Spratt

Josephine M. Spratt, 87, of Buffalo died Monday, July 18, 2005, at her residence. She was mother of Merle Dea Koch of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Davis officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mrs. Spratt was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Verona to Charles Benjamin and Fannie Merle Tibbets Morgareidge. The family lived in Wigwam, Porcupine Creek and the Hunter ranger stations during her childhood, due to her father's work as a forest ranger. She attended several schools, including the Schoolhouse Park School, and was a 1936 graduate of Ten Sleep High School. After graduation, she worked for her father in a general store in Deaver. She married James T. Spratt on Nov. 1, 1940, in Ten Sleep. They lived on the Bay State Ranch there until 1944, when they moved to Lost Cabin. They also lived on the Bad Water Ranch near Armento, and in Riverton. They moved to Casper in 1959, and Mr. Spratt worked in the insurance business. They moved to Kaycee in 1961 and bought the Hash Knife ranch on the North Fork of Powder River. They retired in 1983 and moved to Buffalo. Mr. Spratt died in June 1995. Mrs. Spratt enjoyed hiking, spelunking, rock climbing, fishing and the outdoors. She was postmaster at Lost Cabin, worked on the U.S. census, was a 4-H leader and a member of the Rebecca's, Eastern Star, Farm Bureau and the Grange. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Survivors include a son, Charles of Denver; two other daughters, Aluia Beth Jones and Virginia Kay Austin, both of Kaycee; a sister, Beth Smith of Buffalo; 17 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Shirley (Sanders) Killworth

Shirley (Sanders) Killworth, 77, of Story and Queen Valley, Ariz., died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, after being injured in a three-car accident in Washington state, according to her family. At her request, no services are planned, but memorials may be made to Volunteers of America in Sheridan or to the donor's choice. Mrs. Killworth was born May 30, 1928, in Des Moines, Iowa, to James Peters and Blanche Imes. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in radiology from universities in Iowa and Missouri. She began her career in health care in San Francisco in the early 1950s. She later moved to Story where she settled in a home designed by her father and built by her mother. She married Thomas Killworth in 2001. They summered in Story and wintered in Queen Valley. She enjoyed travel and adventure, including prospecting for gold in the mountains of Wyoming and Alaska. Survivors include her husband, two stepdaughters, three step-granddaughters and one great-grandson.

 

Earl Clayton Rice

Former Sheridan resident Earl Clayton Rice, 89, of Worland died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at his residence. A memorial service will be later in Worland, and cremains will be buried at Eureka, Mont. Arrangements are with Veile Mortuary of Worland. Mr. Rice was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Dayton to Luther and Myrtle (Ratcliff) Rice. He grew up in Monarch, where he attended schools through the eighth grade. He was a 1933 graduate of Sheridan High School. He was a cook with the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years, then worked on the Parker Dam in Arizona. He returned to Sheridan and worked for Western Airlines. He transferred to Billings with the airline and later worked for Safeway and IGA stores in Billings. After retiring, Mr. Rice spent seven years traveling in a motor home. He enjoyed sports including tennis, bowling, horseshoes, ice-skating, roller-skating and bicycling. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Grace Chapel Community Church in Worland and Gideon's International. He married Sylvia Elhard Pomeroy on June 25, 1966, in Billings. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Di Anna Miller of Pendleton, Ore., and Nicole Dedman of Buena Vista, Colo.; two stepsons, Tim Pomeroy of Troy, Mont., and the Rev. Leon Pomeroy of Knox, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Janet Hawkins of Fort Worth, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tomkins died Wednesday, July 13, at her home. She was born March 5, 1934, in Plainfield, Conn., to Alice Jane Sykes and William Roberts. She was a 1952 graduate of Plainfield High School and a 1955 graduate of the Hartford (Conn.) Hospital School of Nursing. She became editor and chief of the Windham County (Conn.) Transcript newspaper and later worked on church newsletters as she followed her husband, the Rev. Peter B. Tomkins, to parishes in Ohio, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Arkansas. She and her husband moved to Sheridan three years ago to be closer to their son. Mrs. Tomkins was preceded in death by a sister, Roberta Roberts McCoy, and a son, John Andrew Duprey. Judith (Wendell) Wallin, 82, of Spring Park, Minn., died Friday, July 1, 2005. She was mother of Nancy Hall of Sheridan. A memorial service will be later. Betty Lou Watenpaugh

Sheridan native Betty Lou Watenpaugh, 77, of Bellevue, Wash., died Monday, July 4, 2005, at her home. A celebration of her life was July 8 at Newport Covenant Church in Bellevue. Inurnment was at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Arrangements were with Flintoft's Funeral Home and Crematory in Bellevue. Mrs. Watenpaugh was born May 11, 1928, in Sheridan to John and Evelyn McClintock. She grew up here and was a 1945 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Albert H. Watenpaugh on Aug. 31, 1947, in Sheridan. They lived in Sheridan until 1962, when they moved to Moses Lake, Wash. They moved to Cheyenne in 1969, to Issaquah, Wash., in 1985, and to Bellevue in 1995. Mrs. Watenpaugh was a homemaker and mother, worked as a secretary/bookkeeper and was a volunteer firefighter in Wyoming for 10 years. She enjoyed gardening, needlework and knitting and was known for her hand-stitched quilts. One of her quilts won the Grand Championship at the 1983 Puyallup (Wash.) State Fair. She also made several quilts to be raffled during Salmon Days in Issaquah and made and gave away more than 75 quilts to charities, family and friends. She was a founding member of the Sheridan African Violet Club, a member of Beta Sigma Phi in Sheridan, Cheyenne and Moses Lake, and a life member of Sheridan's Naomi Chapter 2, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of First Congregational Church and the X-JWC (formerly Junior Women's Club) in Cheyenne and a member of the Issaquah Quilters. She was preceded in death by a son, John, in 1998. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Patricia Courtney of Puyallup, Carol Strack of Everett, Wash., and Phyllis Davis of Bellevue; a sister, Beverly Legters of Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Robert `Bob' Foss

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Foss, 79, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Mr. Foss died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born June 28, 1926, in Basin to Warda and Martha (Sayles) Foss. The family moved to his grandparents' ranch near Decker, Mont., when he was 3 years old. He attended Foss school on Youngs Creek and Squirrel Creek and was a 1944 graduate of Sheridan High School. He worked for Pete's Taxi and Jersey Creamery in Sheridan. In 1948, he went to work at the flour mill as a packer, a job he held for 10 years. He married Doris Elaine Hill on May 4, 1947. She died Sept. 22, 1982. Mr. Foss married Jean Erickson on March 19, 1983. He began doing custom cemetery work in 1987. He later acquired three lodges for which he did cemetery care. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Overturf, and a brother, Claris. Survivors include his wife, Jean; a daughter, Cathie Wirtz of San Diego; a stepdaughter, Carol Wolfe of Gaston, Ore.; three stepsons, Curtis Erickson of Bismarck, N.D., Craig Erickson of Sheridan and Colin Erickson of Mount Vernon, Wash.; a granddaughter; eight step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Theodore `Ted' Shickley

Former Clearmont School District Superintendent Theodore “Ted” Shickley, 83, of Matlock, Wash., died Thursday, May 19, 2005, according to family members. Mr. Shickley was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Sheridan to Mark and Dora Mae (George) Shickley. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a master's degree in statistics. He was a World War II veteran, enlisting as a cadet in the Army Air Corps. He flew C-47 transports in Europe. He was shot down in the third wave of the Battle of the Bulge. He landed his severely damaged plane in Belgium, walked away from the crash site with all his crew and, with the aid of the French underground, made his way to safety in the Netherlands. Mr. Shickley married Arlene Snider on May 9, 1948. He served as Clearmont school superintendent until 1961, when the family moved to Seattle. He taught at Evergreen High School for 18 years until retiring in 1979. After retirement, he managed rental homes and vacationed in Wyoming and Phoenix. Survivors include his wife; children Martha of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Mark, Martin and Mary Lipps, all of Matlock; and grandchildren.

G. Arland Johnson

Memorial services for Sheridan native G. Arland Johnson, 72, of Broomfield, Colo., will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Broomfield United Methodist Church. Mr. Johnson died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in Louisville, Colo. He was born Dec. 19, 1932, in Sheridan to George and Frieda Johnson. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1949. He attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Ore., and Phillips University Seminary in Enid, Okla. He was ordained a minister on July 4, 1954, at First Christian Church in Sheridan and received a Master of Divinity degree in 1958. He served pastorates at Christian churches in Wray, Colo., Alamagordo, N.M., and Thornton, Colo. He was regional minister for Minnesota and the Dakotas for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He sang in many community choral groups and directed church choirs. He served 20 years on the Northglenn Selective Service Board. He served as regional board chairman in New Mexico and was chairman of many regional church committees. After his retirement, he was a member of the Broomfield United Methodist Church, where he organized a program for seniors and sang in two choirs. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Glenn. Survivors include his wife, DeAnna; two daughters, Daylene and Delonna; a brother, Gene; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Broomfield United Methodist organ fund or the Tennyson Center for Children (formerly Colorado Christian Home) in Denver.

 

Aaron Leroy Dockery

Aaron Leroy Dockery, 70, of Parkman died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at his residence on Pass Creek. At his request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Mr. Dockery was born May 13, 1935, in Thermopolis to Charles Morgan and Lillian Eglentine (Henson) Dockery. The family moved to California for three years when Mr. Dockery was 8 years old. They returned to Thermopolis. Mr. Dockery worked in the oil fields and on ranches. He later moved to the Parkman area and continued to work on ranches. He joined the Army in June 1957 and served 18 months in Germany. He was discharged from the Army in June 1959. He returned to the Parkman area and married Catherine Brooks Yonkee in Sheridan in 1959. He became ranch foreman for Yonkee Land and Livestock on Pass Creek in 1975 and held the position until his death. He was a member of Ranchester Rotary Club and was fire chief of the Pass Creek Division of the Ranchester Fire Department. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, attending sales and auctions, playing cards with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife; a son, Aaron of Parkman; four daughters, Lillian Durham of Safford, Ariz., Alma Kersh of Cheyenne, and Nancy Johnston and Annie Butler, both of Parkman; three sisters, Louise Rush and Nita Ramsey, both of Thermopolis, and Betty Boyer of Casper; and 13 grandchildren. The family moved to Butte, Mont., in 1941, then to Billings in 1942. She worked in the Billings city treasurer's office for 25 years. She married Vernon G. Zickefoose on May 12, 1965, in Casper. The couple lived in Billings until 1971, when they moved to Sheridan. Mr. Zickefoose died in 1986. Mrs. Zickefoose moved back to Billings in 1999 to be near her daughter. Wesley Peter “Pop” Kinnard, 84, of Ranchester died Thursday, June 16, 2005, according to his family. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. July 17 at Dayton Community Church. He was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Ironwood, Mich., to George and Rosalie Kinnard. He hauled for Twin City Milk Producers until 1969. He managed Camp Bethel Bible Camp in the Big Horn Mountains from 1969-1986 and did machinist work for local ranchers until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Norine. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Behlow died Monday, June 27, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born June 2, 1930, in Rhinelander, Wis., to Louis and Lillian (Tessmer) Behlow. The family moved to Florida, then to San Francisco, where Mr. Behlow graduated from Lincoln High School. He married Donna Mae Barich on May 13, 1950, in Reno, Nev. They lived in San Francisco. Mr. Behlow joined the Army and served in Europe, where he was the youngest first sergeant in the Army. After service, he returned to San Francisco and worked as a building contractor until 1957, when the family moved to Lodge Grass, Mont. Mr. Behlow was a beekeeper. The family later moved to Sheridan, and Mr. Behlow continued keeping bees and worked for ABC builders until he retired. Mrs. Behlow died in 1998. Mr. Behlow married Mildred Francis on June 23, 2001. He was past commander of American Legion Post 116 in Lodge Grass, past president of Sheridan Country Club, past director of the Montana State Bee Keepers Association, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council for six years. He enjoyed working with bees, golf, fishing, playing cards and being with friends. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by three children, Louis, Scott and Sheri, and brothers Kenneth and Louis. Survivors include his second wife; a son, Rich of Dayton; a daughter, Karen Rachelle of Carmel Valley, Calif.; a sister, Penny Varney of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Evelyn C. Denton, 81, of Rapid City died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in the Sturgis (S.D.) Community Long Term Care Center. She was mother of Terry Denton of Story and Kirby Denton of Big Horn. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitation is noon until 9 p.m. today at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Denton was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Morristown, S.D., to Charles and Evelyn (Frappier) Mistelski. She grew up in Morristown and attended Corson County School. She moved to California during World War II and worked for a Navy supply depot at San Pedro. She married Ted Denton on July 18, 1944, at Hot Springs, S.D. The couple moved to Hot Springs in 1945, then to Lead, S.D., from 1953-73. They later moved to Indiana, Ohio and, in 1978, to Denver, where they lived until 1988, when they retired and moved to Sturgis. Mrs. Denton enjoyed camping and cooking. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Good Sams and Key City Ramblers. Survivors include her husband; another son, Lynn of Lead; a sister, Violet Wellman of Aberdeen, S.D.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Northern Hills or Make-A-Wish Foundation.

 

`Dick' Germany Jr.

Former Sheridan resident Hubert Victor “Dick” Germany Jr., 69, of Buffalo died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at his residence. Private services will be later at Lake DeSmet. Mr. Germany was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Sulphur, Okla., to Hubert and Winnie Germany. The family later moved to Lusk. Mr. Germany worked in Lusk as a service station attendant, later returning to Oklahoma, where he worked high-line construction. He and his wife, Virginia Louise (Stults), later lived in Dennison, Texas, until 1975, when they moved to Sheridan. Mr. Germany retired in 1986, and they moved to Buffalo in 2001. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Merkey of Sheridan; a daughter, Ethel Tarnstrom of Clearwater, Kan.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

 

`Sam' Jensen

George Blakeslee “Sam” Jensen, 66, of Buffalo died Saturday, July 2, 2005, in Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Private family burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Memorials may be made to Suzie Bowling Lawrence Hospice Remodeling Project in care of the funeral home.

 

Ethel Garland

Ethel Garland, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, June 27, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Audra B. Wilson

Former Sheridan resident Audra B. Wilson, 87, of Hulett died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, in Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel in Sundance. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Old High School Gymnasium in Hulett with the Rev. Jim Greenacre officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Hulett Cemetery. Mrs. Wilson was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Chadron, Neb., to Font and Alice Bush. She was raised on the family ranch near the Little Missouri River at Hulett. Her parents later moved to Sheridan, where she and her brother attended school. She graduated from Sheridan High School and received her nursing degree from the University of Minnesota. She served in the Army Nurse Corps, 26th General Hospital Division, from Feb. 17, 1942, until May 12, 1947. Her tour of duty included service in England, North Africa and Italy. She contracted polio at the end of World War II. She worked at the hospital in Gillette after being discharged from the Army. She later attended the University of California-Los Angeles and worked as a public health nurse in California and, later, as a school nurse. She married Laurence Edgar Johnson on June 29, 1949, in Long Beach, Calif. He later died. She married Frank B. Wilson on Sept. 9, 1966, in Sparks, Nev. She retired in 1980 and returned to Hulett. She enjoyed going to the family ranch, working with her Arabian horses and gardening. Survivors include two daughters, Patti Oltman of Capistrano Beach, Calif., and Susan Skrove of Hulett; a brother, Warren Bush of Englewood, Calif.; two stepchildren, Karen Ryssman and Gregory Wilson; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Crook County Hospice or Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch.

Mary V. Johnson

Mary V. Johnson, 89, of Sheridan died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services have been scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Mildred Drake

Mildred Drake, 74, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services have been scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Drake was born March 11, 1931, in Gillette to James and Rosalie (Slagle) Carroll. She married Glen Drake on March 16, 1951, in Sheridan. She enjoyed reading and traveling with her husband, especially on their motorcycle. Survivors include her husband; two sons, James of Snohomish, Wash., and Russ of Lake Forest Park, Wash.; two sisters, Rosalie Landon of Meeteetse and Effie Hicks of Phoenix; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
