Former Sheridan area resident Retha Cox, 94, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, in Gig Harbor, Wash. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Cox was born Oct. 27, 1907, in Loma, Colo., to Dave and Linnie (Collins) Fields. The family moved to Sheridan when she was a child. She attended schools here and married Clifford Cox Dec. 12, 1929, in Sheridan. Mr. Cox was employed by Wyoming Game and Fish, and the family lived in several locations in the state before Mrs. Cox moved to Washington in 1990. She was a member of the Alcyclone 27 Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Powell and a former member of the Story Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987 and a brother, Ray Fields. Survivors include a son, Marlin, of Basin; a daughter, Carmen Ouimet, of Gig Harbor; a sister, Elsie Hein, of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Sheridan native Beatrice E. Dumont, 91, of Cheyenne died Thursday, June 27, 2002, in United Medical Center West. Private family services are planned. Arrangements are with Schrader Funeral Home. Mrs. Dumont was born March 17, 1911. She married Albert G. Dumont Aug. 31, 1940, in Sheridan. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the Homemakers and Garden Club of Sheridan and active in volunteer work. She was a Gray Lady at the hospital here. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Legerski and Suzanne Dickerson, both of Cheyenne. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to Cheyenne Botanical Gardens.

Rose Reisch, 89, of Sheridan died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. An open visitation is Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Mrs. Reisch was born Sept. 25, 1912, to Rocco and Concetta (Giovanazzi) Montegna in Carneyville. Following school, she worked as a dietitians aide at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She retired from the hospital in 1972. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, and a sister, Bettie Logsdon. Survivors include a stepson, Elmer W. "Sonny" Reisch Jr., of Sheridan, and a stepdaughter, Loriee Price of Prescott,Wash. Ralph R. Haar, 63, of Parkman, died at his residence Sunday, June 23, 2002. A visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Cornerstone Church, 4351 Big Horn Ave., with Pastors Tony Forman, Kenneth Pretty On Top and Donald Brendtro co-officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Haar was born Nov. 15, 1938, to Roland and Leone (Thalmann) Haar in Freeman, S.D. Following high school, he attended college, and married Virginia Luckhurst Sept. 10, 1972, in Garden City, S.D. Mr. Haar was self-employed in many areas, including farming, livestock-equipment production, American Indian pottery and woodworking. He designed and built three log homes for his family and most recently developed and directed the Sure Foundation Family Ministry on the Crow Reservation in Montana, with outreach in Wyoming and South Dakota. He was a member of Cornerstone Church in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife, of Parkman; a daughter, Shelly Brown, of Merrill, Iowa; two sons, Shannon Haar and Roland "Cody" Haar of Parkman; four grandchildren; his mother, of Freeman; a sister, June Roth of Bridgewater, S.D.; and a brother, Dale, of Sioux Falls, S.D. Memorial services for Story native Harry "Jack" Johns, 78, who died April 30, 2002, will be 10 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Buffalo. A gathering in the churchs social center will follow the services. Mr. Johns was a 1941 graduate of Sheridan High School and a World War II veteran. Patricia Ruth Rexroat, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, June 21, 2002, in her home. Private family services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Rexroat was born April 4, 1926, in Minneapolis to Melville E. and Ruth E. (Maybe) Bertie. She attended schools in Minneapolis and was a 1947 graduate of the Minnesota School of Nursing. She was a Cadet Nurse. She moved to Sheridan after vacationing here, and worked for Sheridan County Hospital. She married Dale Eugene "Gene" Rexroat Oct. 7, 1950. She worked 13 years as nurse for School District 2 after raising her family. She was active in the Wyoming PTA and Cub Scouts and was the first woman in Wyoming to receive the Silver Fawn (now Silver Beaver) award. She taught Red Cross first aid to adults and fourth-grade students. She served on the boards of Public Health Nursing, Red Cross, Child Protection, and Rehabilitation Enterprises of North Eastern Wyoming. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, Beauceant, Retired Teachers Association and St. Peters Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; four sons, Mark of Sheridan, Bruce of Wyarno, Scott of Gillette and Kirk of Wright; a sister, Betty Erickson of Minneapolis; and four grandchildren. Dorothy A. Darnell, 77, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at her residence. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff, Neb. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Kane Funeral Home is handling local arrangements. Mrs. Darnell was born April 29, 1925, to William and Pearl (Whitehorn) Braithwait in Spencer, Neb. She graduated from Spencer High School in May 1943. She married Arden "Mick" Darnell Oct. 15, 1944, in Spencer. The couple lived in California, Oregon and Scottsbluff before moving to Sheridan in September 1998 to be near their son. Mrs. Darnell was secretary of First Presbyterian Church in Scottsbluff for 22 years. She enjoyed ceramics, reading, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and its Circle Two and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dale and Howard, and a sister, Macel Kirwan. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Michael of Sheridan and Maurice of Greeley, Colo.; three sisters, Aura Mattson of Vancouver, Wash., Mildred Sall of Holdrege, Neb., and Maxine Bjornsen of Verdigre, Neb.; a brother, Ronald of Norfolk, Neb.; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Helen M. Long, 75, Lodge Grass, Mont., died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Big Horn County Memorial Hospital in Hardin, Mont., the family announced. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is 1 p.m. June 29 at the ranch, followed by a potluck picnic for family and friends. Born June 27, 1926, in Sayle, Mont., to C.F. and Katie E. McKenzie, she married Archie E. Long Sept. 19, 1945. Mrs. Long was an expert seamstress who enjoyed gardening, animals, ranch life and cooking for her family. A brother and sister preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; a son, Floyd E. Long, Lodge Grass; a daughter, Glenda Sue Butkavich, Federal Way, Wash.; four brothers, including two from Sheridan, one from Big Horn, and one from Buffalo; three sisters, including two from Sheridan and one from Osage; and a granddaughter.

Bruce Gail Harbel, 50, Sheridan, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home, the Rev. Terral Bearden officiating. Mr. Harbel was born Jan. 21, 1952, in Burwell, Neb., to Maurice and Clara Harbel. His family moved to Wyoming in 1953. As a youth he enjoyed oil painting and making cedar chests. He married Donna Rawlings in April 1973. His animal totem was the eagle. His recovery was important to him, as was helping others with theirs. Survivors include his wife; his parents of Sheridan; two daughters, Autumn Slater of Billings and Amber Harbel of Sheridan; a sister, Linda Naylor, of Sheridan; a brother, Doug Harbel, of Sheridan; three grandchildren with one on the way; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. Richard G. Miller, 73, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 16, 2002, in Casper following a heart attack, his family said. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services are planned Labor Day weekend in Gillette. Mr. Miller was the son of the late Eljo "Red" and Kitty Jones. He married Faustine Kenitzer in 1959. He worked most of his life as a body and paint man. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and taught hunter safety for many years. He also enjoyed car racing and black-powder shoots. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Allen Jones. Survivors include three children, Cindy Green of Phoenix, Bill Miller of Seattle and Casey Brady of Oklahoma City; a sister, Vickie Green of Sheridan; and four grandchildren.

Lashley Raymond Drell, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, June 14, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Drell was born Dec. 20, 1925, in New Orleans to Goodman and Myrtle (Labatut) Drell. His parents died before he was 13 years old, and he lived with his oldest brother. He graduated from high school in Robindale, Minn. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was discharged in Denver, where he attended college. He married Loraine Bernie in Denver. She died of cancer in 1966. Mr. Drell worked as a salesman for heating and air conditioning in Great Falls, Mont., Portland, Ore., and Billings before coming to Sheridan in 1962 to open the first Shiptons store. He married Eunice Evans Moyer in Sheridan in 1975. He sold his interest in Shiptons and worked as a realtor until he retired. He later was custodian of Trinity Lutheran Church for 12 years. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting and ball games. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathy and Linda; and a brother, Warren. Survivors include his wife, Eunice, of Sheridan; six sons, Michael Drell of Grapevine, Texas, David Drell of Casper, James Drell of Vancouver, Wash., Lance Moyer and Chris Drell, both of Sheridan, and Larry Moyer of Arlington, Va.; four daughters, Mary Drell, Suzanne Tressler, Jennifer Hanson and Kelly Drell, all of Sheridan; a brother, John of Aurora, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Sheridan native John B. Auda died Thursday, March 28, 2002, in California. He was born in 1919 in Sheridan to John B. and Magdelena (Rondono) Auda. He married Perry Annalee Varner in Sheridan in 1940. He served with the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War II. He worked 30 years for Shell Oil Co., retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Concord, Calif., and SIRS of Walnut Creek, Calif. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; a son, Frederick, of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.

Gilbert R. Heine, 79, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 15, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Immanuel Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod with the Rev. Larry Veland officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Lutheran Cemetery in Lexington, Neb. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Heine was born March 17, 1923, in Lexington to Chris and Katie (Weiland) Heine. He graduated from high school there and enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the 12th Armored Division in Europe. He received a battlefield commission to first lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star and Silver Star. He returned to Lexington after the service and married Aurella Ringenberg Aug. 20, 1947. He was a graduate of Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., and was high school principal in Staplehurst, Neb., while still in college. He became principal of a Minneapolis school after graduation. He returned to Lexington in 1954 and served as chairman and general manager of the COOP Alfalfa Mill Dehydrating Association. He joined the staff of Concordia Teachers College in 1964, serving as director of college relations, dean of development and assistant to the president until he retired in 1987. He was active with the Laborers for Christ of the Lutheran Church for 10 years after retirement. He moved to Sheridan in 1998 and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a past board member of the Nebraska Independent College Foundation and past president and current secretary of the 12th Armored Division Association. He was an avid bowler, with a 231 average, and enjoyed golfing, fishing, horseback riding, four-wheeling and the mountains. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, the Rev. William Heine of Sheridan; a daughter, Kathleen Hintz of Topeka, Kan.; a brother, Chris of Cozard, Neb.; a sister, Twilla Smith of Cozard; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Former Sheridan resident Gary Wayne Kawamoto, 45, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at his home in Arvada, Colo., after a long struggle with cancer. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be Sunday in Arvada, Colo. Mr. Kawamoto was born July 18, 1956, in Sheridan to John and Marge Kawamoto. He worked for Sheridan Meat Co. for several years. He married Pamela Croft in 1976. They later divorced. He was a member of the Wyoming National Guard during his years here. He worked for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver the past 10 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and Colorado Avalanche. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his life partner, Kim Martinez, of Arvada, Colo.; three children, Joshua Kawamoto of Ranchester, Desiree Kawamoto of Sheridan and Krystal Kawamoto of Arvada, Colo.; his mother, Marge Ehilings of Manhattan, Nev.; a brother, Mike Kawamoto of Pine Haven; and a sister, Elaine Norris of Carson City, Nev. Jack Ray, 85, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Vigil services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Eugene Sullivan and Deacon Joe Kristufek co-officiating. Interment of cremains will be at a later date. Mr. Ray was born in Tulsa, Okla., to Harry and Berenice (Holbeck) Ray. The family moved to Sheridan when he was 2 years old. He graduated from Sheridan High School and got a job the next day at Montana Wyoming Oil Co. He was manager there about seven years. He worked for Boeing in the companys template and tool liaison shop in Seattle during World War II. His work included designing the nose cone for the B-29 bomber. He returned to Sheridan after the war and worked for Mid Continent Oil Co. He married Helen Gronski Feb. 8, 1946. He worked in the parts room and kept books for Tommy Sanderson at the Nash Garage and was office manager at Hammer Chevrolet for about five years. He then worked as a public accountant for 25 years, assisted by his wife and oldest daughter. He retired in 1987. He built his familys home and a summer cabin in Story. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan, held a private pilots license and enjoyed leather craft and woodworking. He built old wagons and was an ice skater and photographer. He enjoyed fishing and playing the harmonica. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, the Society of Public Accountants and AARP and an honorary member of Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two daughters, Janis Shannon and Amy Rojo, both of Sheridan; a stepsister, Margie Dregoiw of Sheridan; and four grandsons. Mayme R. Juroshek, 85, of Sheridan died Friday, June 14, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mary Ann Sherburne, 90, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be later in Arizona. Local arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Born April 29, 1912, in Kaycee to U.O. and Stella (Webb) Kirtley, she attended grade school in Kaycee and graduated from Buffalo High School. She earned a degree in home economics from the University of Wyoming. She trained women in home economics for the state, working in Sheridan, Campbell and Weston counties during the Depression. She married Edwin Sherburne in 1937 in Scottsbluff, Neb. They moved to Sun City, Ariz., many years ago. After she suffered a stroke, Mrs. Sherburne returned to Sheridan seven years ago to be near her brother. She enjoyed Shrine ladies activities, her home and family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980; a sister, Zaide Kirtley, in 1994; a brother, Marston Kirtley, in 1950; and two other brothers in 1917. Dorothy M. McLain, 84, Sheridan, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Friends may gather at her home, 91 Sherri View Drive, today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born June 12, 1918, in Manitowoc, Wis., to William and Amanda (Ellermann) Ladwig, she grew up and graduated from high school in Manitowoc. She also graduated from the University of Wisconsin. She moved to Rock Springs, where she taught school for several years. She moved in 1953 to Greeley, Colo., where she worked as a county social worker for children until retiring. She moved to Sheridan in 1981, and married James McLain here in September 1982. Mrs. McLain enjoyed playing cards, going to auctions and the Senior Center, travel, and collecting antiques. She belonged to AARP and American Association of University Women. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; a son, William; and a sister, Harriet Dickmann. She was the companion of Edgar Nelsen of Sheridan. Survivors include two sons, Don Richmond, Fort Collins, Colo., and Kent Richmond, Billings; a daughter, Margo Nelsen, Sheridan; and 10 grandchildren. Elizabeth Ann Mall, 59, formerly of Sheridan, died at her home in Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday, June 12, 2002, of cancer. A memorial Mass will be Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. She was born Oct. 13, 1942, and raised in Sheridan. She was the daughter of John and Mary Gale. She was a graduate of Creighton University. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Ken; four children, Scott, Julie, Christie and Jeff; two brothers, John Gale of Sheridan and Jim Gale of Denver; five grandchildren; and two nephews. Opal Drake Naylor Sams, 79, of Sheridan died Tuesday, June 4, 2002. In accordance with her wishes, in lieu of a funeral service her ashes will be scattered on the mountain. Mrs. Sams was born March 17, 1923, to Bill and Maude Drake at Crow Agency, Mont. She married Dean Naylor in 1942, and they ranched at Crow Agency. She worked at the Big Horn Battlefield and earned a bachelors degree in education during that time. She taught school in Busby, Mont., and Lame Deer, Mont., and for several years in Alaska before coming to Sheridan to work for the U.S. Forest Service. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ira, Howard, Darrell and James; a sister, Gertrude; and a son, Stanley Dean Naylor. Survivors include three children, Sylvia Minear of Sheridan, Claudean Roehmann of Denver and Grant Naylor of Hamilton, Mont.; two sisters, Hazel Davis of Hardin, Mont., and Betty Chimienti of Spokane, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

C. Richard "Dick" Skinner, 71, of Cheyenne died Saturday, June 8, 2002. His family homesteaded in Big Horn, and he married Rosemary Eckel in 1954 in Sheridan. Myrla Rae Bisbee, 59, of Sheridan died June 3, 2002, at her residence. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with Pastor James Burt officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Bisbee was born April 14, 1943, in Butte, Mont., to John and Ruth (Franks) Hexem. She attended schools in Powell, Cody, Worland and Sheridan and finished high school as an exchange student in Mullacker, West Germany. She attended Sheridan College, where she was accepted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, and graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor of arts degree (with honors) in education. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society at UW. She married Rodney Bisbee. She taught German, Spanish and English 22 years at Sheridan High School and taught Spanish four years at J.B. Young Junior High in Davenport, Iowa. She retired in June 1990. She attended church at Grace Chapel in Story and the Salvation Army in Sheridan. She was a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the Wyoming Education Association. She was president of the Sheridan County Education Association in 1978-79 and president of the Wyoming Foreign Language Teachers Association in 1975-77. She was 1967 Educator of the Year in Scott County, Iowa, and named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1984 by the Professional Business Women of Sheridan County. She was recipient of Kiwanis Internationals Tablet of Honor in 1996 and the Kiwanis 21st Century Heritage Society Honoree. Delta Kappa Gamma named her a Woman Educator of Distinction in 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John. Survivors include her husband and a sister, Susi Griffing of Scottsdale, Ariz. Dayton native Edna L. White, 92, of rural Wyola, Mont., died Friday, June 7, 2002, in the Big Horn County Memorial Nursing Home after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Bullis Mortuary Funeral Chapel in Hardin, Mont. Mrs. White was born Aug. 13, 1909, to William L. Sr. and Lizzie Frasier Gilbert. She grew up on a ranch in the upper Little Horn River valley and was educated in Sheridan and Lodge Grass, Mont. She was a graduate of Hardin High School. She married Hugh Gordon in Helena, Mont., in 1927. They were later divorced, and she married Henry F. White Sr. March 5, 1946, in Columbus, Mont. Mr. White died in 1995. Survivors include three children, Barbara White of Wyola, Henry F. White Jr. of Rio Ranch, N.M., and Tom Gordon of Las Vegas; a sister, Edyth Jackson of Citrus Heights, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Anna B. Lawrence, 87, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born June 23, 1914, to Charles and Anna Karpi in Dietz. She attended school in Dietz and Sheridan High School. She worked many years in and around Sheridan, where she raised her four sons. She worked at the Sheridan Inn for many years as a waitress, was an accomplished seamstress and loved raising flowers. She was preceded in death by four sons, Calvin, Eddie, Dan, and David. Survivors include several grandchildren and a niece, Jean Eicher of Cody. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Sheridan Senior Center or the Salvation Army in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Andrew Clay Slack, 42, Parkman, died Friday, May 31, 2002, on the family ranch in Como, Texas. A memorial service is 1 p.m. June 23 at his residence near Valley Meat Co. in Parkman. Slack was born April 13, 1960, in Odessa, Texas, to Martha and William Slack. He was raised in Wood County, Texas, where he graduated from Quitman High School in 1978. He visited Wyoming in 1972, later moving to the Jackson area where he worked on several ranches. He moved to Sheridan County in 1991 and worked for the Sunrise Ranch near Ranchester and the Big Horn Cattlemans Association. At the time of his death he was employed by Valley Meat Co. Slack loved fine chocolates, riding horses, dancing, reading Western novels and traveling, especially in the Big Horn Mountains. During high school he was active in FFA. He is survived by his mother, Martha Fry, of Como; a half brother, William Slack Jr., of Longview, Texas; and his fiancée, Windy Crivello of Parkman and her two daughters, Brianna Laird and Felicia Aragon. He was preceded in death by his father.

Nicholas Heil, 91, of Sheridan died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at his residence. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. Mr. Heil was born Nov. 17, 1910, to Jacob and Barbara (Heidt) Heil in Harvey, N.D. He married Johanna Marie Zacher June 26, 1933, in South Dakota, and they lived for some time in Eagle Butte, S.D. He served as an Army rifleman in the European Theater during the Rhineland Ardennes campaigns during World War II. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded in 1945 in Germany. He also was awarded the Combat Infantrymans Badge and the EAME Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars. He liked to fish and dance and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge 186 and Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Dee Bordeaux, and two sons, Jack and Robert James, all of Sheridan; three brothers; five sisters; a special friend, Naomi Malyurek; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Bernadette A. "Betty" Hoyt, 86, died Tuesday, June 4, in Salt Lake City. She was sister of Jane Garner of Sheridan. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla. Neil ODonnell and Sons Mortuary of Salt Lake City is handling arrangements. Mrs. Hoyt was born Dec. 2, 1915, in Philadelphia to Joseph and Catherine Franklin. She grew up in Sheridan and attended Holy Name School and Sheridan High School. She graduated from Miseracordia Hospital in Philadelphia as a nurse and served in the Korean War as a first lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She married Warren Hoyt after the war, and they lived in St. Petersburg. Survivors include a second sister, Mary Hagan, of Salt Lake City.
Former Sheridan resident Robert Gene Main, 64, of Keystone, S.D., died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Custer Community Hospital. Funeral services were May 13 in Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City with the Rev. Barb Gammeter officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Keystone. Mr. Main was born March 3, 1938, in La Cygne, Kan. He grew up on the family ranch in Cody. He married Elaine Parker in August 1957, and they owned and operated a house- and sign-painting company in Evanston until 1960, when they moved to Sheridan. He worked for the Salt Creek Trucking Co. until 1962, then drove a taxi for his sister and brother-in-law until he went to work for Sheridan Flouring Mill in 1963. He was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad in 1965 and worked until his retirement in 1994. He and his wife moved to Keystone and purchased the Rushmore Bar in 1995, expanding the business into the Rushmore Bar and Supper Club. Mr. Main was president of the Keystone Chamber of Commerce for two years and belonged to Masonic Lodge of Keystone and Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Survivors include his wife of Keystone; two sons, Robert "Bob" Jr. of Gillette and Dale of Keystone; a daughter, Dona Main, of Keystone; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Travel Fund for Crippled Children.
Elmer "Dean" Douglas, 86, of Greybull died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis. He was father of Bob Douglas of Sheridan. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the Atwood Funeral Home in Greybull and half an hour before services Monday in the church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Greybull with the Rev. Michael McMillan officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Greybull. Mr. Douglas was born Nov. 13, 1915, 11 miles south of Upton to the Rev. Willard and June E. (Sheldon) Douglas. He attended country school near Upton and high school in Upton. He married Eleanore Elida Woods Jan. 20, 1936. They later divorced. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Aviation Engineers in England, France and Germany. In 1951 he worked on the Thule Air Base in Greenland. He moved to Greybull in 1952. He married Micaila Marie "Mickey" Saldana June 6, 1953, in Red Lodge, Mont. She died Dec. 14, 1982. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Winfield, and a son, Thomas D. In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Dee Ann Lassle of Lyman; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. A memorial fund to benefit Hillside Cemetery improvements has been established at First Interstate Bank of Commerce, 601 Greybull Ave., Greybull, WY 82426.

Sheridan native Dennis Dean Manor, 54, of Tacoma, Wash., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in Owasso, Okla. Services are private with arrangements by Mowery Funeral Service of Owasso. Mr. Manor was born June 15, 1947, in Sheridan to Dean and Margaret (Schaler) Manor. He grew up in Sheridan and was a 1965 graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Sheridan Community College. He spent most of his working life as a transportation technician with the Washington state Department of Transportation. He was an active member of the Washington state Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter Q. His father died in 1979. Survivors include a son, Devin Dean, of Honeydew, Calif.; his mother, Margaret Powell, of Sheridan; three brothers, Edward Manor of Advance, N.C., Donald F. Manor of Hartline, Wash., and Thomas E. Manor of Owasso; a sister, Susan A. Calkins, of Owasso and Sheridan; and a half sister, Pam Merchant, of Tacoma.

Austin Dale Smith, 12, of Torrington died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Shriners Burn Institute in Galveston, Texas. He was grandson of Ruth Berry of Sheridan. Austin was born Sept. 26, 1989, at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne to Paul W. and Cary L. (Berry) Smith. He was a sixth grader at Indian Paint Brush elementary school in Laramie and was active in 4-H, Cub Scouts, Torrington Little League and his church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Oral D. "Shorty" Berry and by his great-grandparents. Other survivors include his parents; a brother, Gentry; and grandparents Ray and Peggy Smith of Fayetteville, Tenn.
