Millie Simons

Millie Simons, 96, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 28, 2003, in Sheridan Manor.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating.

Visitation will be 8 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Mrs. Simons was born June 5, 1907, in Serepta, Russia, to Henry and Elizabeth (Roth) Kerbel. The family came to the United States in 1913. They arrived in Baltimore, then moved to Havilok, Neb., where Mr. Kerbel worked for the railroad.

The family later moved to Clearmont. Mrs. Simons attended grade school in Big Horn and graduated from Sheridan High School.

She worked on dude ranches in Arizona and at Eatons' Dude Ranch at Wolf. She also clerked in drug stores.

She married Guy F. Rogers in Sheridan. He died in 1972, and she later married Ray Simons in Sheridan.

Mrs. Simons was a 50-year member of P.E.O., a member of the Sheridan Women's Club, an avid bowler and bridge player and loved her flowers, yard and home. She enjoyed going to the Kaufman Ranch on Piney Creek and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed singing and dancing.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, four brothers, a sister, one niece and two nephews.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Elks Cemetery Fund in care of Elks Lodge 520, 45 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801, or to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Bella I. Heasley

Bella Irene Heasley, 91, of Sho-shoni died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Wind River Healthcare in Riverton. She was stepmother of Sydney Lupton of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Shoshoni Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Shoshoni. Viewing will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday in the Shoshoni Community Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Heasley was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Pittsburgh. She married Archibald Roy McKinney in 1928 in Vandergrift, Pa. He died in 1984. She married Ralph Edward Heasley Oct. 12, 1976, in Vandergrift. He died in 2002. Mrs. Heasley was active in the Community Presbyterian Church in Shoshoni and played the piano there for many years. She last played the piano for services in September 2002. She also sang at many church functions in Fremont County. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine, VFW Auxiliary, Shoshoni Senior Citizens Center, 49’ers Extension Club and the Fremont County Chapter of the Wyoming State Historical Society. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, William R. McKinney; and a sister, Emma Deter. Other survivors include her children, Betty Bunuelos of Leguna Hills, Calif., Iris M. Carter and Jane Adamson of Shoshoni; stepchildren June Romano of Shasta Lake, Calif., Joan Marcus and Kathy Guffey of Lander, and Jerry Heasley of Charleston, N.C.; a sister, Bertha Girt, and a brother, William Connor, of Vandergrift; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Bruce H. Nowlin

Bruce Henry “Buzz” Nowlin, 78, of Basin died Monday, June 2, 2003. He was brother of Carol Schaeffer of Big Horn. Memorial services are tentatively set for Sept. 7, 2003. Arrangements are with Atwood Family Funeral Directors Inc. of Basin. Mr. Nowlin was born June 2, 1925, in Lander to Bruce and Harriet (Battles) Nowlin. He grew up, attended schools and worked in the Lenore, Morton and Lander area. He worked herding sheep for a time after leaving school. He joined the Navy in October 1942 and served on the USS Endicott at NTC Farragut, Idaho, and PSC USNB in Bramerton, Wash. He earned the European African ME Area Campaign Medal, two stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged from the Navy in June 1946 and went to work ranching and punching cattle in the Dubois area. He also worked in the timber industry in the Hanna, Elk Mountain and Saratoga areas. He married Maxine Brumley Oct. 6, 1955, in Sheridan. They lived in Dubois for a time, moved to Saratoga then returned to Dubois. They moved to the Burlington area in 1970, and he farmed. They later moved to Basin. He enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, working in the yard, growing roses and taking walks. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Brucella (Teensy) Hague; and half-sisters May Murphy, Dora Sheehan and Dorothea Alexander. Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Evelyn Sue Brumley-Smith of Basin; a brother, Robert of Riverton; another sister, Peggy May of Thermopolis; two stepgrandsons; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Connie H. Streb

STORY — Constance Yvonne Hakert “Connie” Streb, 57, of Story died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Story. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Danny Francis officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Thursday and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with graveside rites. Mrs. Streb was born June 18, 1946, in Buffalo to Andrew and Ester Hakert. She grew up and attended schools in Buffalo and was a 1964 graduate of Buffalo High School. She married Dale Selig in Buffalo, and she worked for the Veteran's Home of Wyoming. She was married and divorced a few times, lived in Washington state five years and spent the last 20 years between Buffalo and Sheridan. She married Jerry Streb in 2000. She loved the outdoors and spending time in the Big Horn Mountains. She spent three summers herding sheep in the Big Horns. She was preceded in death by her mother, a sister and one son. Survivors include one son, Lamar Selig of Sheridan; a brother, Drew Hakert of Riverton; her stepfather, George Hibler of Story; and five granddaughters. Memorials may be made to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Katherine Philpott

Katherine Philpott, 78, of Buffalo died Monday, June 23, 2003, in the Johnson County Healthcare Center after a long illness. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Father Dick Edgerton officiating. Private family burial will follow. Memorials may be made to the Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice, the Johnson County Healthcare Foundation, St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Buffalo Senior Center.

Danny L. Schulz

Danny Lee Schulz, 59, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Deaconess Medical Center in Billings of natural causes. Viewing will be noon until 8 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Gifford officiating. Mr. Schulz was born Oct. 23, 1943, in Burlington, Calif., to Ruben William and Pearl Evelyn (Diekman) Schulz. He married Donna Ray Hood Dec. 26, 1990, in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the Navy in 1961 and 1962 after high school. He started college at age 50 and graduated from Sheridan Community College in 1997 with degrees in art and science. He enjoyed gardening and was anticipating a train trip across the country at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother, of Lockport, La.; his wife, of Sheridan; two sons, Don of Windsor, Colo., and Ron of Platteville, Colo.; a daughter, Roxanne Williams of Greeley, Colo.; one brother, Jim of Raceland, La.; and six grandchildren. Margaret L. Weaver

Margaret L. “Peg” Weaver, 59, of Sheridan died at her home Saturday, June 21, 2003, of natural causes. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dave Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Weaver was born Feb. 7, 1944, in Billings to William P. Toy Jr. and Helen M. Anderson Toy. She attended college in Kansas and did graduate work at Georgetown University, the University of Minnesota,, the University of Washington and the University of Wyoming. She participated in many computer and technology courses. She graduated from college in 1966 and worked for the federal government for three years. She began her teaching career at Sheridan High School and taught English 31 years before she retired. She was the high school's Humanities Division Head from 1988-93 and English Department Head from 1993-2000. She was Sheridan's Teacher of the Year in 1987. She enjoyed gardening, canning, reading and being with friends. Survivors include her husband, Ronald D. of Sheridan; three children, Kathleen Anne of Eugene, Ore., Scott Patrick on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, and Michelle Erin of Rhododendron, Ore.; three sisters, Patricia Toy and Marilyn Suppes, both of Tacoma, Wash., and Cathy Gamas of Minot, N.D.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nevada Smith

Nevada Holifield Smith, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Bevinsville, Ky., to Maryland and Elizabeth (Cooke) Osborn. She grew up and attended schools in Kentucky then moved to Ogden, Utah, where she worked in the Army Hospital. She married Marshall F. Holifield Feb. 10, 1944, and they move to Lance Creek where they raised cattle and sheep. Mr. Holifield died in 1964. She married Doyle Blackmore in December 1965. She moved to Lusk and worked as a housekeeper. She moved to Greeley, Colo., in 1970. She married Bernard Smith in 1972 in Farmington, N.M. She retired to Colorado in 1982 then move to Sheridan in 1993. Mrs. Smith enjoyed knitting, needlework, tatting, crocheting, sewing and helping others. Survivors include a son, Holly Holifield of Sheridan; a daughter, Jill Andre of Greeley; a brother, Joseph Osborn of Bevinsville, Ky.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the St. Labre Indian School in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

George L. Grotz

George Lewis Grotz, 51, of Sheridan died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be 3 p.m. Mon-day at the VFW Post on Broadway. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Grotz was born Jan. 16, 1952, in Butte, Mont. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1971 graduate of Sheridan High School. He joined the Navy after graduation and served five years during the Viet Nam Conflict. He returned to Sheridan after his discharge and went to work for his father as a mechanic in the Central Garage in 1976. He became owner of the Central Garage in 1978 and operated it until 1990 when he went to work for Woods Truck Co. of Gillette until the time of his death. He also operated a small garage at the corner of Dow and Gould in Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include three daughters, all of Sheridan; two brothers, Kent S. of the Phillippines and John of Minneapolis; two sisters, Sharon “Sha” Trout and Sherri Read, both of Sheridan; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. J.D. Elsom

James David Elsom, 81, of Buffalo died Friday morning, June 20, 2003, in the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. He was father of Judith Shippy of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Father Charles Taylor officiating. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday and just before Mass Tuesday at Adams Funeral Home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside rites. Mr. Elsom was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Buffalo to David and Lila Elsom. He attended Johnson County schools and was a 1939 graduate of Johnson County High School. He attended two years of agriculture science at the University of Wyoming then returned to the family ranch. He married Eulala Hakert Aug. 26, 1946, in Buffalo. Mr. Elsom was active in 4-H and was a leader 33 years, was a board member and president of the Johnson County Co-op, was a member of the board of directors of the Rural Electric Association, served on the Johnson County school board and was a member of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, and a brother, Ellis. Other survivors include his wife, of Buffalo; four sons, Edward Taylor of Fort Collins, Colo., David Elsom of Spearfish, S.D., and John and George Elsom, both of Buffalo; two other daughters, Janice Kolnik of Buffalo and Jocelyn Burns of Laramie; a sister, Gwen Criss of Wheatland; 18 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mary M. Regelin, 75, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in her home. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. Mrs. Regelin was born July 31, 1927, in New Mexico to Manuel and Magdalena (Misquez) Munoz. She married Ron Regelin. They later divorced. Mary M. Regelin, 75, of Sheridan died Wednesday, April 18, 2003, in her home. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. Mrs. Regelin was born July 31, 1927, in New Mexico to Manuel and Magdalena (Misquez) Munoz. She married Ron Regelin. They later divorced. Mrs. Regelin worked in her home as housekeeper and cook and loved to plant and crochet. David Livingston

Former Sheridan resident David Glenn Livingston, 86, died Jan. 26, 2003, at his residence in Scottsdale, Ariz. Graveside services with inurnment of cremains will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the family plot in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A memorial serves was Jan. 31 in the Messinger Mortuary and Chapel in Scottsdale. Mr. Livingston was a member of the Sheridan High School class of 1935. He was a sales director of Prescription Drugs and moved to Scottsdale from California 25 years ago. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce, in June 2002. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Livingston and Barbara Schauwecrer, both of San Diego, Calif.; and one grandson.

George W. `Bill' Grunkemeyer

George William “Bill” Grunkemeyer, 60, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his Sheridan home of Lou Gehrig's disease. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Grunkemeyer was born July 27, 1942, in Casper to George and Prudence Grunkemeyer. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved skiing, fishing, hiking and camping. Work in the late 1960s with Jim Simon, a noted Disney wildlife photographer employed by the Wyoming Travel Commission, led Mr. Grunkemeyer into a career in film production with emphasis on wildlife and other outdoor subjects. He formed Grunko Films in the mid-1980s and began producing fishing, hunting and wildlife videos. He produced more than 40 outdoor and wildlife video titles since 1984, along with 35 episodes of Grunko Films' “Experience the Wild” series. Mr. Grunkemeyer worked for all major television networks and won numerous awards for his own productions and for his camera work for other companies. He was twice named National Wildlife Federation and Wyoming Wildlife Federation “Communicator of the Year.” Gov. Dave Freudenthal honored him this year by declaring April 7 “Bill Grunkemeyer Day in Wyoming.” Survivors include his wife, Carol of Sheridan; a daughter, Gillian of Sheridan; a son, Cory of Denver; his mother; a sister, Barbara Farr; two nieces; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Thomas L. Waddell

Sheridan native Thomas L. Waddell, 67, of Safford, Ariz., died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in a Tucson, Ariz., hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and the National Guard. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Waddell was born July 7, 1935, in Sheridan to John and Alice (Tift) Waddell. He grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on many aircraft carriers with tours of duty off the coast of Vietnam. He married Gwendolyn Ann Hamilton in 1955 in Concord, Calif. He rose to the rank of master chief in the Navy before retiring in 1973. He returned to Sheridan and managed the XL Lounge for several years. He moved to Safford in 1982. He enjoyed shooting guns and military and firearms history. He was preceded in death by one son Jeff; sisters Gladys and Thelma; and brothers Fritz, Jack, Harry, Bill and Leo. Survivors include one son, Steve of Sheridan; a daughter, Connie Waddell-Hilpert of York, Ariz.; three sisters, Betty Kuzara of Sheridan, Beverly White of Las Cruces, N.M., and Donna Kearn of Grants Pass, Ore.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Beata Kamran, 16, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 15, 2003, in an automobile accident. Funeral services are 2 p.m. today at Sunrise Assembly of God Church with the Rev. John Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ms. Kamran was born Oct. 28, 1986, in Sheridan. She grew up in Sheridan and would have been a junior in Sheridan High School. She loved spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandmother Ruth Zimdars and an aunt, Patricia Zimdars. Albert Edwin Sells

Former Sheridan resident Albert Edwin Sells, 50, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Colorado Springs, Colo. A private memorial service is pending. Mr. Sells was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He lived in Colorado Springs 20 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph C. Sells, and a sister, Junella Bush. Survivors include his mother, Doris M. Sells of Sheridan; two brothers, Gary of Bombay Beach, Calif., and Kirby of Casper; and a sister, Karen Shanor of Ranchester.

Arron K. Rehder

RANCHESTER — Arron Kenneth Rehder, 19, of Ranchester died Sunday, June 15, 2003, in an automobile accident. Viewing will be 1-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Cremation will follow. Mr. Rehder was born Dec. 14, 1983, in Sheridan to Dale and Linda (Cuer) Rehder. He grew up at Blue Spruce in the Big Horn Mountains. He attended Camp Bethel and Tongue River schools. He worked for Pastor Keller and E.H. Ofthal & Son as a construction-equipment operator. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, four-wheeling and the mountains. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kilpatrick was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Rogers, Texas, to Emmett and Lula (House) King. She attended schools in Rogers and married Dueward W. Kilpatrick there Aug. 11, 1935. The family lived in San Antonio from 1942-46 before moving to Ingleside, Texas. They moved to Sinclair in 1960. Mrs. Kilpatrick was display manager at the J.C. Penney store in Rawlins, then the couple retired to Cheyenne. Mrs. Kilpatrick moved to Sheridan in 1998. Her husband and a son preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Gene of Sheridan; a sister, Carolyn Gyger of Grand Junction, Colo.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ann Morgan

Former Sheridan area resident Ann Morgan, 65, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, in Roseville, Calif. A memorial celebration of her life will be noon Saturday in Cochrane's Chapel of the Roses in Roseville. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. Mrs. Morgan was born July 23, 1937, in Cody to Carl and Ora Norris. She attended all 12 years of school in Big Horn and graduated in 1955 among a class of 14. She was active in cheerleading, drama and glee club and held several offices in high school including class president and secretary. She worked as a medical assistant and office manager for doctors in Wyoming and the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento, Calif., areas for nearly 35 years. She married Duane Morgan more than 43 years ago in Sheridan. They moved to the Sacramento area in 1979 and enjoyed traveling in their motor home, cruising and vacationing in Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii. Mrs. Morgan also enjoyed card games and board games and socializing with friends and family. Her favorite sport was bowling, and she won numerous trophies and pins during more than 30 years in the sport. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey. Survivors include her husband; a son, Larry of Pleasanton, Calif.; a daughter, Melissa of Fair Oaks, Calif.; four sisters, Lola Hauf of Sheridan, Jo Elaine Bedsaul of Torrington, Barbara Moore of Kennewick, Wash., and Carolyn Griffith of Big Horn; a brother, Jack Norris of Sheridan; and six grandchildren. Irene Butcher

Irene Butcher, 91, of Gillette died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette of natural causes. She was mother of Ronald D. Butcher of Banner. Mass of Christian Burial was this morning in St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Gillette with Father Karl Millis officiating. Burial is in Gillette-Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Arrangements are with Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mrs. Butcher was born March 23, 1912, in Anselmo, Neb., to Albert and Marie (Jestrabek) Bader. She attended rural schools and helped on the family farm. She married Arley Butcher Nov. 24, 1932, in Anselmo. They farmed in Nebraska the first five years, then moved in 1937 to the homestead of Mr. Butcher's father near Wild Cat. They leased a ranch west of Recluse for a year, then bought it in 1939. They moved to Gillette in 1962. Mrs. Butcher worked for Norge Laundry before she and Mr. Butcher built the Butcher Feed Store in 1968. They operated the store until selling it in 1977. They returned to the ranch in 1978 to raise draft horses. They retired and returned to Gillette in 1996. Mrs. Butcher was an avid gardener and won many ribbons for her canned vegetables, jellies and jams. She cooked several years for roundup crews. She was Campbell County Ranch Woman of the Year in 2000. She was a member of Pleasant Hour Ladies Club and the Petroleum Club in the Recluse area. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, two brothers, Leo and Walt, and a sister, Clara Kellogg. Survivors include a second son, Duane of Gillette; a sister, Alberta Chrisp Mais of Sterling, Colo.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Sheridan native Loren C. Cole Jr., 82, of Hardin, Mont., died Friday, May 30, 2003, in Billings Deaconess Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bullis Funeral Chapel in Hardin. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military and Elks honors. Mr. Cole was born Nov. 27, 1920, in Sheridan to Loren Cole Sr. and Edna Wood Cole. He attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1940 graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Colorado State University for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was a tank gunner serving in European Theater. He returned to college following his honorable discharge. He married Laura Mae Sonneman March 23, 1947, in Sheridan. He worked for Holly Sugar Corp. and the Montana Highway Department before beginning a career with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. He worked on the Yellowtail Dam project in 1960 at Fort Smith, Mont. He retired in 1984 as a civil engineering technician. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and golf. He tied and sold flies. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion of Hardin, a 50-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8 in Sheridan and a 50-year member of Sheridan Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lorrie of Helena, Mont.; a son, John (Gloria) of St. Xavier, Mont.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson, Cole Link. Buelah H. Bushmaker, 98, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Bushmaker was born Oct. 17, 1904, in Charles City, Iowa, to Rufus Leander and Blanche (Jennison) Seavy. The family moved to Hoskins Basin, a homestead north of Billings, in 1913, and Mrs. Bushmaker graduated from high school in Billings. She entered a three-year nurses' training program at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County in 1923. She married Jack Bushmaker May 16, 1924. She earned her license as a practical nurse, and she and her husband started the Bushmaker Nursing Home in their residence in 1944. The home was the first of its kind to be licensed in Wyoming. They operated it 17 years. Mrs. Bushmaker was the first administrator of Eventide of Sheridan Inc. — now Sheridan Manor — when the facility opened in 1961. She partially retired in 1970 and retired fully in 1977. She spent her retirement traveling, visiting relatives and friends, participating in church activities, doing handiwork and enjoying everyday living. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the St. Joseph group of Catholic Women and was past president of the Wyoming Nursing Home Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sisters, four brothers and one great-grandson. Survivors include two sons, William of Casper and John of Coos Bay, Ore.; a daughter, Darlene Waddell of Sheridan; a brother, Dick Seavy of Albany, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Henry E. Vine, 86, of Sheridan died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Private family services will be later, with inurnment of cremains in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Vine was born Aug. 18, 1916, in Cambia to John and Lillian (Eslick) Vine. He grew up in Monarch and Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Edyth Kawamoto Dec. 16, 1941, in Fort Collins, Colo. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the service he worked for Sheridan Wyoming Coal Co. in the Monarch mine until it closed. He then worked as a diesel mechanic for Burlington Northern Railroad until 1980, when he retired. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, hunting and gardening. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Vance Vine of Cody; a brother, Robert of Sheridan; a sister, Rose Parsons of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. David Williams

Sheridan native David Apolonio Williams, 68, died Thursday, May 15, 2003, in Fresno, Calif. Services were May 20 in Fresno. Mr. Williams was born April 19, 1935, in Sheridan to Charles Nathan and Constance Barron Williams. He was a star athlete in Sheridan High School, lettering in football, basketball, track and field and baseball. He was a member of the 1952 Wyoming State Champion American Legion Baseball Team. He graduated from SHS in 1954 and later was signed by the minor league Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He was an avid fan of the Dodgers, Lakers and Los Angeles Rams. He was a retired employee of 34 years at Beef Packers Inc. of Fresno. He was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne, and a brother, Santiago Chavez Jr. Survivors include his wife, Jewell Marlene of Fresno; two daughters, Myrna Joyce Medicine Horse of Wyola, Mont., and Patricia Shyrleen Williams of Fresno; three sons, Gregory Ray and Ryland Bird, both of Fresno, and Darin Jay of Clovis, Calif; two brothers, Carlos of Hanford, Calif., and Daniel Serrano of Fresno; two sisters, Josephine Allen of Goodyear, Ariz., and Mary Vasquez of Selma, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Gillis Charles Flanagan, 83, of Dayton died Monday, May 26, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Walters, Okla. Inurnment will be in Oklahoma City. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan. Mr. Flanagan was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Keller, Texas, to Charles and Maggie Flanagan. He spent his younger days around Keller and later moved to Walters. He worked for the Oklahoma Highway Department. He married Betty McKiddy in Oklahoma City. He later went to work for Shell Oil Co. in Oklahoma City. He and his family were relocated around the country during that time, including to Ardmore, Okla., Bismarck and Dickinson, N.D., Glendive, Mont., and Billings before being transferred to Houston to work in the exploration part of Shell Research Lab. He was in charge of leading field trips all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. He retired in 1984, then spent time on special assignments with Shell Oil at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and collecting water samples across the United States. He also was involved in filming “This Land,” a documentary about the evolution of geology in North America. After his wife's death, Mr. Flanagan spent time fishing with old friends, traveling and visiting his sons. He was proud of being an Irishman and a descendant of Daniel Boone. Survivors include two sons, Michael of Dayton and Gillis Patrick of Watsonville, Calif.; two brothers, Funston P. and Andy J. of Walters; a sisters, Helen Mitchell of Dunedin, Fla.; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Rinaldo

Elizabeth Jane “B.J.” Rinaldo, 74, of Thermopolis died Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Hot Springs County Hospital following a short illness. She was mother of David L. Rinaldo of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place, and services are private. Arrangements are with Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis. Mrs. Rinaldo was born April 24, 1929, in Pueblo, Colo., to Roy and Francis (Thompson) Collins. She was a college graduate. She married Marion “Mutt” Rinaldo June 6, 1952, in Pueblo. They moved to Sterling, Colo., where she taught English for two years. They moved to Thermopolis in 1962, then to Casper in 1964. She taught English in Natrona County High School 12 years. The family moved to Grand Junction, Colo., in 1980 and returned to Thermopolis in 1992. Mrs. Rinaldo was a member of Community Federated Church, the Chancel Choir and the Master's Musicians handbell choir. She also enjoyed flower gardening. Survivors include her husband; a second son, Jeffrey A. of Honeyville, Utah; a daughter, Elizabeth A. “Beth” Rinaldo of Springfield, Va.; a brother, John Collins of Hot Springs, Va.; three sisters, Lou Marie Lawson of Atlanta and Beverly Allott and Nadine Wines, both of Seattle; and two grandchildren. Beulah Bushmaker

Beulah H. Bushmaker, 98, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 29, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

 

William Scheltens

William A. Scheltens, 94, of Sheridan died Tuesday, June 3, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Thomas Fleming

Thomas Fleming, 62, of Sheridan died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Colonial Manor in Custer, S.D., where he was being treated for kidney failure. Burial was in Black Hills National Cemetery. Mr. Fleming was a medic in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a volunteer at Sheridan VA Medical Center, where he worked in the supply department and pharmacy. He had lived in Sheridan 22 years.

 

Estelle Sorensen

Estelle R. “Essie” Sorensen, 80, of Sheridan died Friday, May 30, 2003, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Sorensen was born April 2, 1923, in Haysi, Va., to Nary (Silcox) and John Branham. She married Howard Sorensen May 26, 1963, in Sheridan. She obtained a beautician's license and owned and operated the White Swan Beauty Salon in Sheridan for 14 years. She loved to garden, raise flowers and cook. She enjoyed spending time fishing and camping in the mountains. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ruthann Hall. Survivors include her husband; a son, Bobbie Jack Hall; several brothers and sisters; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Doris Hawkins

Doris Mae Hawkins, 82, of Sheridan died Friday, May 30, 2003, at her residence. Viewing is 1-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Hawkins was born July 2, 1920, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Chris and Olga (Molfield) Holten. She grew up and graduated from high school in Scottsbluff. She married Kenneth Hawkins April 21, 1940, in Harrisburg, Neb. They farmed near Scottsbluff for a few years until moving to Sheridan County in 1945. They ranched on Lower Prairie Dog Creek for 12 years, then moved into Sheridan. They owned and operated The Spot until the late 1970s, when they retired. They then traveled around the United States in their motor home. Mrs. Hawkins enjoyed playing bridge and dancing. She belonged to Does Drove 127, Daughters of the Nile and Sheridan CattleWomen. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deann Kay, seven brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband; a son, Ken “Buddy” of Boulder Creek, Calif.; a daughter, Doree Kobold of Sheridan; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Hospice of the Big Horns, Shrine Crippled Children Travel Fund or Family Caregiver & Respite Care at the Senior Center in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
