Ethel Garland

Visitation for Ethel Garland will be 5-7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating, with burial in Sheridan Eagles Cemetery. Mrs. Garland, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 28, 1919, in McIntosh, S.D., to Thomas C. and Emma (Oudin) Cook, she lost her father at an early age and moved with her mother and older brother to Thermopolis. She grew up in Thermopolis, residing at the historic Plaza Hotel, where her mother and brother worked. She graduated from Thermopolis High School in 1939 and earned her teaching certificate from Black Hills State Teachers College in 1942. In 1944, after teaching briefly and working as a PBX operator in Vancouver, Wash., she married Dale Garland of Story. They lived briefly in Gillette before moving to Sheridan. Mr. Garland's employment with Peter Kiewit took the family to Utah and Idaho, and they returned to Sheridan in 1982. An accomplished seamstress, Mrs. Garland enjoyed crocheting, knitting, travel, bowling, and playing cards. She volunteered for several organizations and belonged to Beta Sigma Phi. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Twila Barnes of Vancouver; a son, Douglas Garland of Casper; and a stepson, Lanny of Potzcuaro, Mexico. Memorials may benefit United Methodist Church Building Fund, 215 W. Works St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Marjorie C. Noecker

Services for Marjorie Claudine Noecker are 2 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Noecker, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. Born Nov. 16, 1928, in Dayton to William M. and Lola (Achenbach) Sack, she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1946 and attended business college. She married Jerome Noecker in 1959 in Reno, Nev. She resided near Lake Tahoe before returning to Sheridan in 1994. A public-service volunteer, she enjoyed golf, needlework, reading, games, and travel. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sharon Dixon; and two sisters, Wilma Burns and Dorothy Hall. Survivors include a son, Daniel Noecker; four brothers, William, Don, Jim and Ken Sack; a sister, Nancy Laughrey; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Senior Citizens Center or donor's choice in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Leon C. Cook

Funeral services for Leon C. Cook, 96, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with officers of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Cook died Saturday, June 25, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. He was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Mason City, Neb., to Arden and Bertha (Hauck) Cook. The family moved to a homestead 35 miles south of Gillette when Mr. Cook was 7 years old. He attended country schools and graduated in 1929 from Campbell County High School. He married Nola Osborn on Nov. 20, 1930, in Gillette. They rented land owned by Loyd Rust south of Gillette for 19 years, and Mr. Cook farmed and raised sheep and cattle. He also was one of the first agents for Farm Bureau Auto Insurance. The Cooks bought one of the Leiter estate ranches on Clear Creek near Clearmont in 1950. They raised registered Columbia sheep in addition to beets, wheat, oats and alfalfa. They sold the ranch to George Schuman in 1958 and moved to Sheridan. Mr. Cook went to work for K.B. Tractor Co. as parts manager. He received a Sheridan Press Friendliness-Courtesy Award. He retired in 1968 because of a shoulder injury. Mrs. Cook died Jan. 12, 1959. Mr. Cook married Lucille Johnson in Sheridan in February 1963; she died in March 1998. Mr. Cook lived in Sugarland Ridge from 1999 until 2003 when he moved to Westview. He was a member of Sheridan Gem and Mineral Society, a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles 186, and International Order of Odd Fellows 19. He enjoyed crafts, including cutting and polishing rocks, making miniature furniture and creating airplanes from aluminum cans. He volunteered time at the Sheridan YMCA securing memberships, showed movies at Sheridan Manor and belonged to the Big Horn Mountain Polka Club. He enjoyed fiddlers' contests and other festivals, field trips, and sightseeing from his camper. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include a son, Edward of Buffalo; a daughter, Helen Mitchell of Sheridan; five stepchildren; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Elks Building Fund, Sheridan Senior Citizens Center or the donor's choice.

 

Wilbur Neil `Pally' Pallesen

Wilbur Neil “Pally” Pallesen, 67, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be later in Hanna Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Pallesen was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Hanna to Wilbur and Anne (Annala) Pallesen. He grew up on a ranch 32 miles north of Hanna and attended schools in the Leo community. He was a 1956 graduate of Hanna High School. After graduation, he worked on dude ranches in Montana during the summer and in Arizona during the winter. He worked on the Chase Angus Ranch in Sheridan County until moving to Hanna to work in the coal mine. He served in the Army from 1961-63. He married Pauline Botner in 1964. The couple divorced in 1978. Mr. Pallesen returned to ranch work for a short time, then worked in the construction industry. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for several years. He enjoyed team roping. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Leah Dickerson of Macon, Mo., and Lynn Pirreca of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Karen Hiatt of Sinclair; and four grandchildren.

Robert SKillman

Robert Skillman, 50, of Ranchester died Friday, June 24, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. A picnic potluck memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connor Battlefield Park in Ranchester. Those attending are asked to wear “Spiderman” apparel if possible. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Skillman was born June 22, 1955, in North Hollywood, Calif., to Larry and Shirly (Nickles) Skillman. He married Cheryl Whitlock in California on Aug. 2, 1980. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gambling, golf, playing Tetris and pool, singing and cooking. He was a member of the Ranchester Town Council, Dayton Rotary Club and the Bass Fishing Club. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Stephanie, Cheralynn and Kristian Skillman and Irene Weimer, all of Ranchester; a son, Robby of Sheridan; his mother, Shirly Nickles; his stepmother, Wanda Skillman; his grandfather, Robert Perry; two brothers, Jimmy and Larry; a sister, Sheryl Johnson; a stepbrother, Steven Skillman; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a fund in Mr. Skillman's name at Cowboy State Bank.

Kelvy Lloyd Andrews

Kelvy Lloyd Andrews, 45, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at his residence of natural causes, according to his family. Cremation has taken place at his request. A celebration of his life will be later. Mr. Andrews was born May 3, 1960, in Sundance to Melvin and Beverly (Alexander) Andrews. He attended kindergarten in Buffalo and completed schooling in Sheridan. He was a 1977 graduate of Wyo Tech — reportedly the youngest graduate at the time — with an Automotive Service Excellence certification. He went to work at Spot Service and later owned the business. He married Ronda Sweet in 1979. They divorced. He worked in various trades throughout his life and enjoyed gardening, camping, water recreation and backyard bonfires with family and friends. Survivors include two children, Jandy Gulley and Jason Wilson, both of Sheridan; his parents; two brothers, Ken of Sheridan and Keith of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister, Katherine Thompson of Fort Collins; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to Wyo Tech in care of Delphine Toner at First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Kenneth A. Frazier

A graveside service for Kenneth A. Frazier, 84, of Sheridan and for his wife, Evelyn (Jump) Frazier, will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Military rites for Mr. Frazier will be conducted by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post 7. Visitation for Mr. Frazier will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Frazier died Sunday, June 19, 2005, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Mrs. Frazier died Dec. 16, 2003. She was cremated. Mr. Frazier was born June 19, 1921, in Warren, Pa., to John and Edith (Owens) Frazier. He married Evelyn Jump on April 17, 1943, in Endwell, N.Y. Mr. Frazier joined the Army in 1943 and was a clerk and mechanic. He was stationed primarily in California. He was discharged in 1945, and the Fraziers made their home in Warren. Mr. Frazier was a machinist for GTE/Sylvania for many years, retiring in 1982 as a machine shop inspector. He and Mrs. Frazier enjoyed square dances and were members of clubs in Pennsylvania, Arizona, California and Wyoming. Mr. Frazier played the guitar, mandolin and harmonica. He belonged to Big Horn Mountain Polka Club and was recognized as the “Peanut Brittle Man.” He also was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 and attended meetings at the Elks Lodge in Lake Havasu City. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. The Fraziers spent their summers in the Sheridan area and winters in California and Lake Havasu City, Ariz. In addition to Mrs. Frazier, he was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and four children. Survivors include three daughters, Esther Samuelson of Reminderville, Ohio, Arlene Pixley of Upton and Kendra Grenesko of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, 45 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

BUFFALO — Clifford Ray Fraley, 86, of Buffalo died Monday, June 20, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Ginnie Powell

Ginnie Powell, 64, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 16, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Powell was born in Phoenix to Leslie and June (Gush) Spidle. She grew up and attended schools in Arizona and graduated from high school in 1958. She moved to Salem, Ore., and married Roger Powell in McMinnville, Ore., in 1970. They later moved to Powell, then to Sheridan in 1970. Mrs. Powell worked in various motels as a housekeeper. She enjoyed flowers, plants and working in her yard. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Brian of Sheridan, Brice of South Bend, Ind., and Frank of California; and one grandchild.

Frank M. Patz

A Christian Wake Service for retired Col. Frank M. Patz, 89, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Cemetery. Mr. Patz died Friday, June 17, 2005, at his residence. He was born May 2, 1916, in Monarch to Michael and Mary (Koscielniak) Patz. He graduated from Sheridan High School and worked in George's Food Market for several years. He married Estherlene J. “Lena” Madia of Kleenburn on June 15, 1941. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was commissioned an officer in 1951. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and later served in Japan, Korea, Italy and Germany. He earned a degree in military science from the University of Nebraska and received many decorations and commendations, including the Bronze Star. He retired with the rank of colonel in 1970. He worked at Sheridan VA Medical Center for several years. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club. He volunteered at Holy Name Church and Sheridan VAMC. He enjoyed golf, bowling, gardening, fishing, hunting and exercising at the YMCA. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Fred of Sheridan and Greg of Juneau, Alaska; a daughter, Laura H. Crawford of Sheridan; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Holy Name Catholic Church, the YMCA “Give Your Heart to a Child” program, or the donor's choice in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. BUFFALO — Alyssa Harriet, 42, of Buffalo died Thursday, June 16, 2005. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Su DeBree officiating. Visitation is noon until 9:30 p.m. today and 8:30-10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Jerri (Beck) Cruz

Jerri (Beck) Cruz, 36, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died Friday, June 17, 2005, at her home. She was daughter of Fern (Beck) Rustad of Ranchester. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, with rosary at 7 p.m. in the Mariposa Gardens Cemetery Chapel in Mesa, Ariz. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Catholic Church in Apache Junction. Arrangements are with Mariposa Gardens Funeral Care. Mrs. Cruz was born Nov. 7, 1968, in Rapid City to Gerald and Fern Beck. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church. In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Christopher; three children, Dane, Erica and Isaiah, all of Apache Junction; a sister, Kathy Budell of Las Vegas; and a brother, Allen Munson of Rapid City. Walter Paul Adolph Bartels

Former Sheridan resident Walter Paul Adolph Bartels, 89, of Cheyenne died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the Life Care Center there. Visitation will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cheyenne with the Rev. David Caspersen officiating. Cremation will take place, and family services for inurnment will be in Sheridan. Mr. Bartels was born April 4, 1916, in the Todd Creek Township, Neb. He moved there from Sheridan in 2002. He was an auto mechanic and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cheyenne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet, three brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Ralph E. of Cheyenne and Dwayne A. of El Sobrante, Calif.; two daughters, Joy L. Miller of Sheridan and Judy K. Coleman of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Cheyenne or Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan.

Edwina C. Brooks

Edwina C. Brooks, 81, of Dayton died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at her residence. Cremation has taken place at her request. A Celebration of Life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the family home, 200 S. Fork St. in Dayton. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Brooks was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Valentine, Neb., to Ed and Rachel (Barker) Gass. She grew up and attended schools in Gordon, Neb. She was a 1942 graduate of Gordon High School. She married William “Bill” Brooks on July 22, 1944, in Lake Charles, La. After the war, the family lived in Chadron, Neb., for a year and a half before moving to Hillsboro, Ore., while Mr. Brooks attended school in Forrest Grove, Ore. They moved to Greybull in 1950, then to Cheyenne in 1965. Mr. Brooks worked for the Wyoming Department of Revenue. The family moved to Gillette in 1977 and to Dayton in 1978. They opened and operated Tongue River Realty in Ranchester. Mrs. Brooks sold real estate until 1990, when she retired. She was active in the Republican Party as a volunteer and committee person while in Greybull and Cheyenne and worked for school districts in Cheyenne and Gillette as a teacher's aide. She volunteered in women's organizations in the Presbyterian Church in Greybull. She enjoyed golf, reading, baking, bowling and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include her husband; a son, William Lee of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Jan Raney of Sheridan; and one grandchild.

Frank Patz, 89, of Sheridan died Friday, June 17, 2005, at his residence. A Christian Wake Service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Thelma E. Landen

Memorial services for Thelma Elizabeth Landen, 95, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Mrs. Landen died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place with arrangements by Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Landen was born in a tent on a ranch in northern Sheridan County on Nov. 27, 1909, to Calvin E. and Margaret (Morgan) Erbaugh. She grew up on her parents' homestead at Young's Creek, Mont. She was a 1927 graduate of Sheridan High School, where she attended normal (teacher's) training during her senior year. She began teaching in a rural elementary school after graduation. She later attended night school, summer school and took correspondence courses to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming in 1955. She taught in rural Sheridan County elementary schools for 37 years, the last 17 as a first-grade teacher in the Tongue River School District. She married Si Landen on March 4, 1929, in Hardin, Mont. He died Jan. 15, 1972. She was a member of United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and a member of United Methodist Women. She was known in later years for the purses she made from recycled denim. She played pinochle, dominoes and Scrabble at Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. She belonged to Daughters of the Nile, AARP, Wyoming Education Association, Sheridan Retired Employees and Sheridan Woman's Club and was a charter member and past president of Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Alonzo, Philip and Lawrence Erbaugh. Survivors include a daughter, Helene Graves of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.

 

Kent A. Moore

Memorial services for Kent A. Moore, 67, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Mr. Moore died Sunday, June 12, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place at his request. Mr. Moore was born Oct. 14, 1937, in Sheridan to Kenneth S. and Ruby Nell (Hamer) Moore. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1955 graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Omaha University for four years. He was a licensed water treatment plant operator, working for the city of Sheridan water treatment plant. He also raised cattle and mined monazite, a rare metal. He had been a member of the Wyoming National Guard. He enjoyed cattle, mining, flowers and local and Western history. He was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include one brother, Kerry Moore of North Glenn, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Mattie Belle Warren

Mattie Belle Warren, 92, of Las Animas, Colo., died Thursday, June 9, 2005, at Bent County Healthcare Center. She was mother of Anna Marie Love of Sheridan. Memorial services were this morning in Horber Funeral Chapel in Las Animas. Mrs. Warren was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Beaver County, Okla., to John W. and Ruth Helton Taylor. She was a licensed professional nurse and worked several years at the Fort Lyon (Colo.) Veterans Hospital. She was a member of Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in LaJunta, Colo. Survivors include two other daughters, Frances R. Velez of Gainesville, Fla., and Mollie Jane Martin of Newberry, Fla.; two sons, William G. and John A., both of Las Animas; a brother, Frank Taylor of Edgewater, Colo.; two sisters, Nellie Tippery of Seattle and Fern Roberts of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Former Sheridan resident Kevin Worth Redman, 35, of Powell died Wednesday, June 8, 2005, in Powell. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Powell with the Rev. Susan Adams-Trembath officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are with Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home. Mr. Redman was born Feb. 22, 1970, in Riverton to Larry and Gail Redman. He received an associate's degree from Sheridan College and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Chadron (Neb.) State College. A Denver Broncos fan, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors, music, playing guitar, and spending time with his children. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chay, and his grandfather Worth Redman of Story. Survivors include his parents of Powell; two daughters, Alexandrea and Mikayla, both of Longview, Wash.; two sons, Noah of Longview and Jacob of Powell; three sisters, Kristie Kennedy, Tracie Guinard and Julie Ley, all of Powell; and three grandparents, Lenora Redman of Story and Bill and Fred Campisan of Powell.

Mrs. Huggins died Thursday, June 9, 2005. She was born July 23, 1913, in the former Sheridan County Dietz No. 7 mining community to Patrick and Christina (Hotchkiss) Chesney. She grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Wilbur Huggins on Sept. 10, 1938, at the TAT Ranch in Banner. She enjoyed playing bridge, picnics and reading. She was a member of the Story Women's Club and the Bridge Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and five sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Peterson and Sally Johnson, both of Story; a sister, Mary Ellen Goodman of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Carroll died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in Sheridan. She was born Sept. 15, 1910, in Denver to Charles and Lady Ethel (Leverette) Slagle. She grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from high school here. She worked alongside her father as a binder at the Mills Company Bindery. She married James Carroll in Sheridan in August 1928. The couple lived in Gillette during the 1930s, then moved back to Sheridan, where Mr. Carroll owned radio station KWYO for many years. Mrs. Carroll played the organ at First Baptist Church in Sheridan for 40 years. She was a member of Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Charline; and a grandson. Survivors include three daughters, Millie Drake of Sheridan, Rosalie Ruth Landon of Meeteetse and Effie Hicks of Phoenix; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Kay died Jan. 11, 2005, in Cheyenne. She was born Dec. 23, 1935, in Sheridan to Bert and Dorothy (Sackett) Kay. She was a records technician for the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Johny B. Herman Skelton, 87, of Buffalo died Wednesday, June 8, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. She was mother of Beverly Cochran of Sheridan. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Monument Hill Cemetery in Thermopolis with the Rev. Steve Frank officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Skelton was born Feb. 13, 1918, in Hereford, Texas, to Jessie and Jenny Carter Tate. She grew up and attended schools in Dimmitt, Texas, and was a 1934 graduate of Dimmitt High School. She attended business school in Amarillo, Texas, and worked as a secretary with Hunt Oil Co. there. She married Vernon Herman in 1940 in Amarillo. They lived in Dimmitt before moving to Amarillo. They moved to Thermopolis in 1946. She worked for a medical clinic and later for First National Bank in Thermopolis. Mr. Herman died in 1963. Mrs. Herman married Jack Skelton in 1965 in Thermopolis. Mr. Skelton died in 1976, and Mrs. Skelton moved to Buffalo to be near family. She had lived in the Amie Holt Care Center since December. Survivors include another daughter, Kyle Herman of Buffalo; and two granddaughters. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Animal Shelter or a charity of choice in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Inurnment of cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery in Reading, Kan. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Waugh died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 20, 1953, in Emporia, Kan., to Robert Eugene and Margaret Ellen (Gaughan) Waugh Sr. He grew up in Reading, Olivet and Goodland, Kan., and was a 1971 graduate of Goodland High School. He went to work for the Rock Island Railroad as a fireman in 1971 in Goodland and received his training as an engineer there. He moved to the Denver area with Rock Island, then signed on with Burlington Northern Railroad in 1977 as a locomotive engineer in Edgemont, S.D. He transferred to the Sheridan Division in 1990 and moved to Story. He went on disability due to poor health this year and officially retired in May. He married Christee Brozovsky on April 3, 1982, in Cripple Creek, Colo. They divorced in 1997. He married Genie C. Szewc on Oct. 17, 1997, in Buffalo. They divorced in 2002. Mr. Waugh held various offices in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He also belonged to the Catholic Church and attended Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Story. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, camping and the outdoors, especially the mountains. Survivors include his parents of Goodland; three brothers, Tom of Ocean Shores, Wash., Mike of Spearfish, S.D., and Scott of Goodland; and three sisters, Catherine and Lynn, both of Manhattan, Kan., and Marcia Honer of Coppell, Texas. William J. `Bill' Donnelly Jr.

William J. `Bill' Donnelly Jr., 92, died Sunday, June 5, 2005. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial of ashes will be in the Masonic Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Donnelly was born Oct. 1, 1912, in Aldine, Ind. His family homesteaded a few miles north of Lost Springs in 1918, and he attended school there. He worked in Douglas. He married Leota M. Schneider in Douglas. She died in July 2001 after 65 years of marriage. The couple lived in Casper before moving to Sheridan in 1945. They later lived in Pinedale, Buffalo and Billings but returned to Sheridan. Mr. Donnelly performed in local plays and was a member of Big Horn Masonic Lodge 43, Sheridan York Rite Bodies of Free Masonry, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and Jesters and was a lifetime member of Kalif Shrine. He served as recorder for the Shrine on two occasions and is the only Kalif Shrine recorder emeritus. He spent most of his business career in the trucking industry. He operated Donnelly Freight Line after World War II and retired from Donnelly Moving and Storage Co. in 1979. Survivors include four children, W. John Donnelly, Mary Jo Macintyre, June Bato and Howard Donnelly; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Myrna Elizabeth Gorman, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 5, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after suffering from pneumonia. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Gorman was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Sheridan to Eva Coffrin Hobbs and Ernest Hobbs, who homesteaded at Passaic. The 320-acre homestead was purchased by John B. Kendrick in August 1927. She married John Gorman on March 5, 1941, in Sheridan. Mr. Gorman worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, and the family traveled to Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. They returned to Sheridan in 1950. Mrs. Gorman was a mother and homemaker and a member of the Rebeccas, Navy Mothers, Banner Community Club, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Blanche; another sister, Helen Buckley; and an infant great-grandson. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Carol Cheeney of Sheridan; two sons, Robert of Ogden, Utah, and Ronald of Cheyenne; a sister, Betty Carlton of Basque Farms, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Esther White, 95, of Sheridan died Monday, June 6, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. White was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Greeley, Colo., to James and Elizabeth (Oglivie) Brown. The family moved to Sheridan when she was a child. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She graduated from nursing school in 1930 and went to work at Memorial Hospital. She married Theodore “Sam” White on April 26, 1935, in Sheridan. During World War II, the family moved to Washington state, and Mrs. White worked in the shipyards. They moved to Findley, Ohio, for a couple of years after the war, then returned to Sheridan. Mrs. White returned to work at Memorial Hospital and was there until 1974, when she retired. A member of Eagles Auxiliary, she enjoyed flowers, crafts, sewing, gardening and animals, especially her cats. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960; her daughter, Barbara Bocek, in 1990; a stepson, Robert White; and a stepdaughter, Marilyn Benjamin. Edward John Crist

Edward John Crist, 91, of Sheridan died Friday, June 3, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. At his request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Crist was born March 18, 1914, in Wichita, Kan., to Edward Joseph and Mary (Billau) Crist. He grew up and attended schools in Wichita and graduated from Wichita High School. He attended college for two years. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1944. He returned to Kansas and worked on the railroad. He married Janet Ballard on Aug. 7, 1946, in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Greybull for three years, then returned to Sheridan. He worked for Cooper Plumbing and later became a partner in Cooper-Crist Plumbing. He eventually became sole owner of Crist Plumbing and Heating in Sheridan. He retired from that business in 1998 and became a greeter at Wal-Mart until 2003, when he retired. He later moved into Sheridan Manor. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 8 in Sheridan, the Wichita Scottish Rite Bodies, Kalif Shrine, Friendship Chapter 51, Order of Eastern Star and Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed collecting, including coins, stamps and trains, and spending time with his family. His wife died in 2001. Survivors include four sons, Edward John Crist II of Cheyenne, Jeffery L. of Sheridan, Paul Kim of Jacksonville, Fla., and Nicholas O. of Oxnard, Calif.; a daughter, Candace of Sheridan; a sister, Aileen Eshelman of Rockwall, Texas; and five grandchildren. Betty M. Lockner, 79, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 2, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Palm Memorial Cemetery in Las Vegas. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ms. Lockner was born June 19, 1925, in Cleveland to Stephen and Josephine (Ockun) Lockner. She grew up and graduated from high school in Cleveland. She was a riveter in an airplane factory during World War II. She married Edward J. Salvatore in 1946. They moved to the Los Angeles area in the mid-1950s. They divorced in 1967. She worked as a cashier in a home-improvement center for many years. She moved to Las Vegas in 1989 and worked for the Motor Vehicle Division. She moved to Sheridan in 1997. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and gambling. Survivors include a son, Ed Salvatore of Ucross; a daughter, Susan Campbell of Las Vegas; a grandson; and one great-grandson. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

George Cherni, 87, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mr. Cherni was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Acme to Joseph and Barbara (Hays) Cherni. He served in the Navy from 1942-45, serving in the Philippines during World War II. He was a flight engineer aboard PBY seaplanes and attained a prop specialist rating. He received the Navy Silver Star. He married Merrilyn Shreve on Dec. 10, 1955, in Sheridan. He enjoyed building ham radios and communicating on them. He was a volunteer on the Elks entertainment committee for Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was a life member of the Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Carpenters' Union. He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers, Andy, Mike, Joe and Leslie, all of Sheridan. Survivors include two sons, Pete of Sheridan and Wayne of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Steve, Rudy and Bill, all of Sheridan; a sister, Elsie of Sheridan; and a granddaughter. Former Sheridan resident Janet Patricia White, 43, of Hereford, Colo., died Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Greeley, Colo., of complications from lupus. Funeral services were in Cheyenne. Mrs. White was born July 30, 1961, in Cheyenne to James R. and Patricia Brown White. She attended schools in Sterling and Westminster, Colo., and Sheridan. She was a 1978 member of the Girls State delegation, a member of the art club and a member of the yearbook staff of Sheridan High School, where she graduated in 1979. She attended the University of Wyoming. She was active in Girl Scouts and a Past Honored Queen of Job's Daughters Bethel NO. 5 in Sheridan. She enjoyed sewing, painting, swimming, travel, computers, gardening and working with and for her children. She was a teacher's assistant at Pine Bluffs Elementary and worked for the Wyoming Department of Public Health Nursing, the Albany County clerk's office in motor vehicle registration and other office positions. She was preceded in death by her father, James R. White of Sheridan. Survivors include her husband, Don Hill; a daughter, Julina White; a son, Patrick White; her mother of Cheyenne; six brothers, James A. White of Raleigh, N.C., David B. and Edwin L. White, both of Tucson, Ariz., Bruce J. White of Cheyenne, Perry K. White of Pine Bluffs, and Page D. White of Austin, Texas; and a sister, Enid I. White of Cheyenne. She married William Lawrence Bixby in Sheridan in 1968. They moved to Kirby, Mont., that year. Mrs. Bixby moved to Sheridan Manor following Mr. Bixby's death in 1990. Richard Gaudet

Richard Gaudet, 64, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Concord. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Gaudet was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Bath, Maine, to Joseph and Mary (Gallant) Gaudet. The family moved to Nashua, N.H., in 1950. Mr. Gaudet graduated from high school there in 1959. He joined the Navy after graduation, serving on destroyers in the Atlantic Ocean from 1959 until 1965, when he was honorably discharged. He returned to New Hampshire and worked as a contract draftsman/engineer for military research and development until 1986, when he moved to Fort Collins, Colo. He moved to Wyoming in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Survivors include a son, Richard of Merritt Island, Fla.; three daughters, Yvonne Gosselin of Cocoa, Fla., Pamela Sullivan of Hillsboro, N.H., and Liane Gaudet of Fruitland Park, Fla.; a sister, Jean of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.

 

Gary L. Lewis

Gary L. Lewis, 68, of Sheridan died Monday, May 16, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis was born June 15, 1936, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Edward and Vera (Carahoff) Lewis. He grew up in Idaho and served in the U.S. Army. He came to Sheridan in the mid-1990s. Survivors include a brother, Jack, of Las Vegas.

Effie M. Bixby, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Marie Tibbets

Marie Tibbets, 95, of Sheridan died Saturday May 28, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be later this summer. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Tibbets was born April 16, 1910, in Smithwick, S.D., to Orin Gilbert and Johana Ida (Rahyfeldt) Anderson. Her parents separated when she was a child, and she lived with her grandparents until she was 6, when she went back to her mother. Mrs. Anderson homesteaded on Donkey Creek near Gillette and later worked as a housekeeper and ranch cook for the Bently Ranch. Her daughter was raised with the Bently family and later with the Levy Howes family. She married Coyne C. Tibbets on the stage of the Lotus Theater (now the WYO Theater) on Nov. 26, 1926. They farmed on Dutch Creek and developed a coal mine, delivering coal to Sheridan for $1 a ton. In 1938, the Tibbetses went into the sheep business on the shares with Al Lonabaugh. Mrs. Tibbets often served as camp-tender, hauling groceries to the main camp and cooking for the sheep-shearing and haying crews. The Tibbetses bought range north of Clearmont near Passaic and farmed and ran sheep and cattle until they retired for reasons of health in 1980. Mrs. Tibbets supported the National Farmers Union and was counselor and youth leader in the Arvada-Clearmont area for 30 years. She managed the NFU summer camp near Ten Sleep for several years. She enjoyed the mountains, fishing, playing the piano and gardening. Her husband died in 1985. Survivors include a son, C.L. Tibbets of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

 

Milo Dean Richards

Sheridan native Milo Dean Richards, 72, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died Friday, May 27, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Gillette's Mount Pisgah Cemetery under direction of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home of Gillette. A funeral service also took place Memorial Day at Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista. Mr. Richards was born Oct. 25, 1932, in Sheridan to Elmer and Edna Richards. He played basketball in Sheridan before joining the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, where he married his wife, Doris. After Mr. Richards' military service, the family moved to Montana, residing there 24 years. Mr. Richards worked at various occupations including gas station owner, bowling alley manager and part owner of McDonald's Restaurants. Mr. Richards later opened his own McDonald's Restaurant in Gillette. The couple lived in Gillette for 10 years before moving to Sierra Vista, where they bought two McDonald's Restaurants. Mr. Richards retired from McDonald's after 28 years with the company. He enjoyed golfing and woodworking. A sister, Erlys Bartles, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Patrick of Sierra Vista, David of Great Falls, Mont., and Paul of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Connie Lawson of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
