Fred J. Luth, 89, of Pass Creek died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At the family's request, cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be at a later date. Joanne P. Bell, 73, of Sheridan died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at her residence. At her request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Bell was born Oct. 12, 1930, to James R. and Helen (Thompson) Perkins. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She received her bachelor's degree from college in Bozeman, Mont., and a master's degree from Rocky Mountain College in Billings. She taught at Squirrel Creek and schools in Acme and Montana. She later worked as a psychologist at the Sheridan VA Hospital until she retired in the 1970s. She married Charles T. Chuck Bell in 1952 in Sheridan. She belonged to the CattleWomen's Association and several art groups. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, displays of her husband's artwork and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother. Survivors include a sister, Barbara Lou Jorgenson of Sheridan; and 19 nieces and nephews.
Former Sheridan County resident Martha M. Sobotka, 101, of Vancouver, Wash., died Monday, March 29, 2004, at her residence, according to her family. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at a later date. Mrs. Sobotka was born Sept. 23, 1902. She lived in Monarch and Acme before moving to Vancouver to be with her mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Sobotka. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia M. Dodge of Burbank, Calif., and Janet Jo Doughty of Grand Coulee, Wash.; two sons, Burton J. of Sheridan and Dwight D. of Cheyenne; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Opal Irene Slaybaugh, 75, of Sheridan died Sunday morning, March 28, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Glen Wessel officiating. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Miss Slaybaugh was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Alva to Aubrey and Alice Slaybaugh. The family moved to Sheridan in 1945, then to Buffalo in 1947. Miss Slaybaugh returned to Sheridan in the late 1950s. She worked at the Best Western Sheridan Center. She had resided at Westview Care Center in Sheridan since last summer. She enjoyed knitting and other needlework. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Survivors include three sisters, LaVern Ritchie of Buffalo, Mary Frances Breuer of Miami and Neva Rice of Alabama; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Senior Center in care of Adams Funeral Home.
Sheridan native Loren Eugene Lund, 52, of Buffalo died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his residence. His family and friends plan private funeral services. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. today in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mr. Lund was born April 27, 1951, in Sheridan to Grant and Alice Lund. He left home at age 13. His first job was taking care of race horses. He married Mary Turk Aug. 3, 1972, in Billings. They lived in Sheridan until 2002, when they moved to Buffalo. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, art, animals and being with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. Survivors include three sons, Jim of Sheridan and Dan and Grant, both of Buffalo; two daughters, Amanda Gainsforth and Crystal Lund, both of Sheridan; and 10 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a fund to help the family with expenses in care of Adams Funeral Home.
Janice Marie Sack, 72, wife of former Sheridan resident Don Sack, died suddenly Thursday, March 25, 2004, at her residence in Casper. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Charles Gifford officiating. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services were in Casper with arrangements by Bustard's Funeral Home. Mrs. Sack was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Salamanca, N.Y., to Gerald and Irene Smith. She grew up in Albion, N.Y. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953 from the State University of New York, Teachers College, at Fredonia. She married Mr. Sack June 9, 1957, in Casper. She taught for more than 30 years, almost entirely at Mills Elementary School. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Joel and Jon of Bridgeport, Texas; and a brother, Harlan of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Melvin McCue Rank
Melvin McCue Rank, 80, of Fort Thompson, S.D., died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at his residence. He was father of Karen Will of Sheridan. Funeral services were Friday at the Tribal Hall in Fort Thompson. Burial was in the Conkicaska Presbyterian Cemetery in Fort Thompson. Mr. Rank and his twin sister, Melvina Margaret, were born Nov. 24, 1923, to Harry and Ada (Crist) Rank in Buffalo County, S.D. He attended schools throughout the United States while his parents traveled, looking for work. He attended school in Fort Thompson in 1933-34 and grew up on the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation. He was a 1942 graduate of Gann Valley (S.D.) High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 20, 1943. He served with the 20th Tank Battalion, 20th Armored Division as a tank commander. His unit fought in Munich, Germany, and helped liberate Dachau Prison. Mr. Rank was discharged on Feb. 12, 1946. He worked for the Homestake Mines in Lead, S.D., and later opened a vehicle repair shop. He was Buffalo County sheriff for 18 years, beginning in 1957. He moved to Fort Thompson in 1966 and built another repair shop. In 1980, he moved to a new location and operated a gas station, laundromat and game room for children. He retired, but took a position in security at the Lode Star Casino in Fort Thompson in May 1993. He retired in November 2003 due to ill health. He married Dorothea Hardsty Dec. 17, 1945, in Broadus, Mont. They divorced in June 1964. He married Elnita (Kirkie) Hawk Jan. 28, 1966, in Highmore, S.D. He was preceded in death by brothers Charlie and Vernon; sisters Florence and Grace; a son, Marty Shawn; a daughter, Darcy McCue; and two grandsons. Survivors include his wife; other children, Linda Volesky of Huron, S.D., Robyn Thompson, Ronda Hawk, Kristal Hawk, Mel Rank, Melva Rank, Chepa Valandra, Larry Rank, Sherwood Hawk, Rory Bishop and Jesse Harrison, all of Fort Thompson, Roxie Estes and Kirby McGhee, both of Lower Brule, S.D., Kirk Buddy Hawk of Prior Lake, Minn., Jay Hawk of Missoula, Mont., John Daly of Pukwana, S.D., and Julie VanMater of Harrisburg, S.D.; brothers and sisters, Harold Rank of Gillette, Ernie Rank of Upton, Melvina Segar Slemp of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sylvia Huber of Emery, S.D., LeRoy Rank of Kimball, S.D., and John Rank of Port Orchard, Wash.; 64 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara Z. Kawulok, 68, of Sheridan died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a five-year battle with cancer. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. A private family service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kawulok was born Feb. 17, 1936, in Kearney, Neb., to Dale and Margaret (Crawford) Kriz. Survivors include her husband, Paul J. Kawulok; a son, Paul of San Jose, Calif.; three daughters, Barbara Doyle of Gillette, Joen Huggins of Story and Mary Redman of Sheridan; a brother, Robert Kriz of Toledo, Ore.; two sisters, Margaret Kriz of Chico, Calif., and Nancy Waggoner of Buffalo; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Raymond E. Burd, 98, of Sheridan died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Burial of cremains will be in the Masonic No. 8 section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Burd was born Feb. 15, 1906, in Levant, Kan., to A.C. and Emma (Elliott) Burd. The family moved to Oklahoma in a covered wagon when he was a child. They returned to Kanorado, Kan., after the death of his 11-month-old sister. Mr. Burd graduated from Kanorado High School, then was recruited by Standard Oil Co. to play baseball at Midwest. He also worked as a pumper for Standard Oil. He married Lucille Alice Tilton Aug. 21, 1932. The family moved to Story in 1943 and to Sheridan several months later. Mr. Burd worked as an appliance repairman for a couple of years in Sheridan, then worked for Montana-Dakota Utilities until 1971. He went into the upholstery business for several years after retiring from MDU. He was a member of the Masonic, Shrine and Elks lodges. He was former president of the Kendrick Golf Commission and helped plant many trees along the fairways. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, the mountains, playing pinochle at the Sheridan Senior Center, dinner Wednesday nights at Heritage Towers and breakfast twice a month with other MDU retirees. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Billy Ray. Survivors include a son, Gail of Ocean, N.J.; a brother, Pat of Casper; two sisters, Vina Chandler of Osborne, Kan., and Waunita Yarnell of Kiowa, Colo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Donald E. Lundberg, 79, of Sheridan died Friday, March 19, 2004, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitken, Minn. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery in Aitken with military honors. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Lundberg was born June 16, 1924, in Kimberly, Minn., to Peter and Betsy (Sogard) Lundberg. He grew up and attended school in Kimberly and Aitken. He joined the U.S. Air Force at age 20 and became a nose gunner in B-24 Liberators for the 461st Bomb Group based in Italy. His crew completed 35 successful missions over Italy, Austria and Germany from August 1944 through February 1945. He married Katherine E. Oustad April 21, 1945. They farmed on the Kimberly family farm until 1951, when they moved to Southern California. Mr. Lundberg worked as an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad and later the Western Pacific Railroad in Quincy, Calif., until 1986, when he retired. He enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. The couple traveled in their motor home after Mr. Lundberg retired. They volunteered as campground hosts in Bighorn National Forest at Prune Creek and Sibley campgrounds for 11 years. Mr. Lundberg was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include his wife; a son, Peter of Oakland, Calif.; three daughters, Lucionne Homberg of Laurel, Md., Kristin Lundberg of Laos and Tamara Lundberg Westbrook of Carbondale, Calif.; a brother, Gerry of Aitken; a sister, Lorraine Erickson of Aitken; and four grandchildren. Marie E. Kennedy, 78, of Big Horn died Friday, March 19, 2004, in the Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, N.Y. Burial will be in Greenwood Union Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy was a former resident of Rye. Survivors include her husband, Peter M. Kennedy; three sons, Peter, Paul and John; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Doris Mae Sells, 90, of Sheridan died Friday, March 19, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Sells was born Oct. 27, 1913, in Sheridan to George D. and Ella (Stevens) Nottingham. The family moved to Thermopolis in 1925, and Mrs. Sells finished her education there. The family later returned to Sheridan and lived on a ranch on Big Goose. She married George Sells Oct. 24, 1934, in Hardin, Mont. They lived in Sheridan. She was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed painting, playing cards, decorating cakes and spending time with her family and friends. Mr. Sells died April 10, 1980. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sells was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a grandson and one great-grandson. Survivors include two sons, Gary of Bombay Beach, Calif., and Kirby of Casper; a daughter, Karen Shanor of Ranchester; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Barry G. Spicer, 48, of Sheridan died Saturday, March 13, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mr. Spicer was born Nov. 7, 1955, in Belle Fourche, S.D., to Loren and Cora (Gardner) Spicer. The family moved to Sheridan when he was a child, and he graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Marsha Donges in 1979 at Crow Agency, Mont. They were later divorced. Mr. Spicer worked for Guernsey Stone, then for Rehabilitation Enterprises of North Eastern Wyoming. A member of First Congregational Church, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and was a former Jaycee. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Ernest. Survivors include a son, Michael of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Angela of Ranchester; his mother and stepfather, Cora and Clint Foslien of Sheridan; and a brother, Douglas of Rock Springs. Gerald E. Nordahl, 80, of Ranchester died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at his residence. Private graveside services will be in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Nordahl was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Wheat Basin, Mont., to George S. and Mary V. (Banfill) Nordahl. He grew up in the Wheat Basin area. He joined the Coast Guard in 1943 and served until 1946, when he was discharged. He returned to Montana, where he farmed until retirement. Survivors include a sister, Anna Thiel of Rifle, Colo.

Albert L. Bonine, 81, of Sheridan died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and at Mr. Bonine's request, his cremains will be scattered along with those of his wife, Nellie Bonine, at their favorite place in Brawley, Calif. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Bonine was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Hoxie, Kan., to Albert and Lillie (Shafer) Bonine. He married Nellie Virginia (Matheny) in September 1951. Mr. Bonine enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, reading and doing crossword puzzles. He was a member of The Grange in Washington and a volunteer with local food banks. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Wade and Raymond; and two sisters, Mildred Hill and Hortense Bonine. Survivors include a son, James of Story; a daughter, Lona Larson of Monroe, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Katherine Shephard, 99, of Dayton died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at a later date in Kansas. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Shephard was born Sept. 27, 1904, in the Cedar Creek Community of Riley, Kan., to Charles and Helen (Keefer) Van Pelt. She eloped during the 1920s and married George E. Shephard in Manitou Springs, Colo. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, flowers, cats, airline flights, crocheting and tatting. She enjoyed sports and followed Kansas College and professional sports teams. She taught Sunday school for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and five brothers and sisters. Survivors include a sister, Dola McIntyre of Randolph, Kan., and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter.
Berniece T. Renie, 95, of Story died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at her residence. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Renie was born Dec. 23, 1908, in Dayton to Edward and Benita (Dow) Townsend. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She married George Renie in May 1928 in Billings. She was preceded in death by her husband in February 1975; a brother, Edward; and a sister, Peggy Miller. Survivors include a sister, Dora Davidson of Story; and two brothers, James Townsend of Sheridan and Roy Townsend of Billings.

Former Sheridan resident George Kukal, 95, of Hay Springs, Neb., died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, in Pioneer Manor. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home Chapel in Rushville, Neb., with the Rev. Gene Vanhuss officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Kukal was born May 21, 1908, in Kadoka, S.D., to John and Elizabeth (Svara) Kukal. Survivors include a son, Ron of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Ray Phillips, 72, of Ranchester died Sunday, March 14, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Ron Derryberry officiating. Cremation will take place with interment in Whitesboro, Texas, at a later date. Mr. Phillips was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Osage, Ark., to Galford and Golda Phillips. He grew up in Felt, Okla., where he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Reuben and Inez Phillips. He was a 1950 graduate of Felt High School and attended Panhandle A&M College before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He served from 1953-55. He received a bachelor's degree from Panhandle College in 1958 and later received a master's degree in education from Northwestern State College in Alva, Okla. He taught school in Texahoma, Okla., and Tyrone, Okla. He married Anita L. Squires Nov. 7, 1964, in Dalhart, Texas. He joined the faculty at Tongue River High School in Dayton in 1967, teaching math and coaching basketball for several years. He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and served a term as president of the local Wyoming Education Association chapter. He retired from TRHS in 1984. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joel of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and a daughter, Elizabeth of Oceanside, Calif. Memorials may be made to the YMCA, 417 N. Harold C. Green, 83, of Sheridan died Thursday, March 11, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post 7. Mr. Green was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Passaic to Lowell C. and Mary (Kerr) Green Jr. He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area and was a 1939 graduate of Sheridan High School. He worked on several ranches in the Sheridan area before moving to San Diego, where he worked for Consolidated Aircraft Co. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1941 and served in World War II flying B-17s in England. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1945 as a first lieutenant. He returned to Sheridan and worked for the Production and Marketing Administration, the Montgomery Ward shoe department and for several construction companies as a carpenter before going to work in the engineering department of Sheridan VA Medical Center. He retired from the VAMC in 1985. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, a member of American Legion John Donald Garbutt Post 7 and a member of the National Rifle Association for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed bowling and playing cribbage. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include companion Angele Cetrone of Sheridan; a brother, Dale of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Elks Cemetery Fund, 45 W. Ione Skogen, 85, of Hettinger, N.D., died Monday, March 8, 2004, at Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen, N.D. She was mother of JoAnn Lilley of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hettinger Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann officiating. Visitation is 1-7 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger and one hour before service time Saturday at the church. A family service will be 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery. Mrs. Skogen was born Oct. 31, 1918, in Melford, Iowa, to Lee and Mathilda (Heinrichs) Johnson. She grew up on a ranch north of Reeder, N.D. She was a graduate of Reeder High School and attended Bismarck Business College. She married Milton Skogen Sept. 21, 1941, in Hettinger Lutheran Church. They lived on a farm north of Hettinger until 1968, when they moved into the town. From 1976 to 1995, they enjoyed spending summers at their cabin near Story. Mrs. Hettinger worked for AAA for several years before her marriage, then worked for the Department of Agriculture for 25 years. She retired in 1972. She was a member of the Hettinger Lutheran Church, treasurer of the Second Forty Club and a member of the Homemakers and the Deborah Circle. She enjoyed spending time at the Hettinger Senior Citizens Center and was an avid bridge player. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include another daughter, Leone Wagner of Hazen; a son, Leland of Midland, Mich.; a sister, Gurnald Hanson; a brother, Bernard Johnson; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hettinger Lutheran Church.

Lois Marie Miech, 76, died Monday, March 8, 2004, in Sheridan Manor following a brief period with heart complications. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Miech was born July 8, 1927, in Payette, Idaho, to William and Jenny Eleanore (Purkey) Bartenhagen. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 1 year old. She grew up and attended school in Big Horn. She married George Miech June 28, 1945, in Hardin, Mont. She worked as a telegraph operator in Ulm, a waitress/cook for various restaurants in the Sheridan area, a school bus driver for Sheridan schools and was a minibus driver for the Senior Citizens Center for 18 years until she retired in 1999. She was a member of First Christian Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed readings, crocheting, camping, the Big Horn Mountains and being a mother. She was preceded in death by a half brother and a granddaughter. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; three sons, William Bill of Helena, Mont., Harley Bud of Casper and Walter Brad of Big Horn; three daughters, Sharon Brantz and Wyla Cotton, both of Sheridan, and Debra Thompson of Casper; two brothers, Harley and Carl Butch Bartenhagen, both of Sheridan; a sister, Eunice Hansen of Sandy, Utah; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Jack W. Reed, 75, of Beatrice, Neb., died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at his residence. He was father of Brett Reed of Sheridan. Funeral services were Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice and this morning at Heafey-Heafey-Hoffman-Dworak & Cutler Funeral Home in Omaha, Neb. Burial is in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Omaha Mr. Reed was born July 9, 1928, in Orleans, Neb. His parents were Anthony and Lillian Reed. He was a 1946 graduate of McCook (Neb.) High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1951. He was employed by the Nebraska Department of Roads, then was vice president of mining for Peter Kiewit and Sons in Omaha until he retired in 1986. He married Eunice (Reinke) Carpenter May 18, 1985, in Las Vegas. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice and former member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Wickenburg, Ariz.; the Elks Club, American Legion, Sportsmen's Club, Classic Car Club, Chamber of Commerce volunteer and a volunteer at Cabaleroes Western Museum, all in Wickenburg. He also belonged to the Arizona Rangers. He was past member of the Midwest Trail Riders in Elkhorn, Neb. He enjoyed horses, Nebraska football, trail riding, hunting, fishing, family outings (especially with his grandchildren), walking, dancing, long trips in his motor home and collecting guns. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Gayle Reed; and by a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; another son, Scott Reed of Omaha; a daughter, Lori Wentz of Omaha; a stepson, Chris Carpenter of Danville, Calif.; two stepdaughters Vicki Bancroft of Long Beach, Calif., and Kim York of Beatrice; a sister, Dot Confer of San Antonio; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alexandra Salem Reed. A memorial has been established with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, which is in charge. Ruth Edna (Reavis) Horsley, 95, of Dayton died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at her residence. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Horsley was born Aug. 6, 1908, in Sheridan to Tom and Edna (Clark) Reavis. She spent much of her childhood at the OW Ranch, which was owned by her father's uncle, Sen. John B. Kendrick. She was a horsewoman and enjoyed animals her entire life. She graduated from Sheridan High School and continued training to become a teacher. She taught in a one-room school at Pine Butte and rode her horse the eight miles there and back. She also helped her father, who was ranch manager at the OW. She married Virgil Horsley in 1930. The family moved to Washington state in 1938 and owned and operated a logging and construction business, which continues today. Mrs. Horsley enjoyed her family, travel, reading and storytelling. She was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, two grandsons and one great-grandson. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Gary and Vern, both of Castle Rock, Wash.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

William Kearney Carey, 89, of Story died Saturday, March 6, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Visitation will be 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home in Decatur, Ill. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Home, with burial in Macon County Memorial Park. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Carey was born Oct. 19, 1914, in Lovington, Ill., to Louis and Myrtle (Kearney) Carey. He attended school in Macon, Ill., and graduated from high school in 1932. He married Bonnie Flo Cloney in April 1936. She died in 1984. He was a firefighter for the city of Decatur for more than 24 years, retiring as a captain in 1974. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church and a Shriner belonging to the Ansar Temple. He moved to Story to be near his daughter. Survivors include a son, David of Redfield, Kan.; a daughter, Kay Turner of Story; a brother, Francis Corwin of Madison, Miss.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Frances F. Dodd, 86, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Dodd was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Washoe, Mont., to Elmer and Hattie (Cooper) Anderson. She grew up in Parkman and attended one-room schools. She worked as a waitress after her school years. She married Clarence Bobbitt. They lived in the Sheridan area. They divorced, and she later married Hugh Dodd. The family moved to Arizona. Mrs. Dodd returned to Sheridan after Mr. Dodd's death. She enjoyed square dancing, walking, knitting and doing cross-stitch.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Tom Anderson, L.L. Bill Anderson, Swede Anderson and Roy Anderson; a sister, Raetta Dockstetter; and two grandsons.
Survivors include three sons, Delmer Corky Bobbitt of Texas, Dwaine Bobbitt of Sheridan and Bill Bobbitt of Bellview, Idaho; two daughters, Joanne Ewalt of Snider, Texas, and Carrol May of Ashland, Mont.; three sisters, Ethel Sales and Bette Kincaid, both of California, and Ann Hank Kool of Forsyth, Mont.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Sheridan native Brett Lee Peterson, 27, of Casper and Gillette died Friday, March 5, 2004, at his Gillette residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Casper with the Rev. Doctor Bryant Badger officiating. Arrangements are with Stevenson Funeral Home of Gillette. Mr. Peterson was born May 29, 1976, in Sheridan to Laura Lynn (Peterson) and Floyd Bennett. He grew up and was educated in Casper. He was a 1994 graduate of Natrona County High School. He received an Associate of Applied Science degree from Casper College and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wyoming. He was working in the Gillette area mines at the time of his death. He enjoyed karate, magic, computer games and his family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors include his parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Anna E. Ekis, 103, of Sheridan died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Scott Lee officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Ekis was born Oct. 31, 1900, in South Wales, Great Britain, to Fred and Lily (Wyld) Hoffman. The family came to the United States when she was a young girl. She lived in Ohio and Iowa before coming to Sheridan in 1915. She married Percy Chase in 1916 in Sheridan. He was killed in an accident in 1918. She married Charles Ekis in 1920 in Sheridan. He died in 1923. She married Jess Ekis in 1926 in Sheridan. He died in 1976. She enjoyed gardening and raising animals. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by sons Fred Chase and Ed Ekis; two infant children; three brothers; a sister; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Bernard Ekis of Sheridan; two daughters, Lillian Keahey and Nancy Favero, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ankney was born July 25, 1913, in Basin to Frank C. and Elizabeth (Leahy) Hormel. She attended elementary school in Shell and was a 1930 graduate of Greybull High School. She was a 1934 graduate of St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Billings. She worked in the Basin Hospital for a short time before moving to Sheridan in 1917. She worked as a registered nurse at Sheridan VA Medical Center and later at Sheridan Memorial Hospital for several years. She returned to Sheridan VAMC, retiring in 1973 after 28 years of service. She married Elmer Ankney June 10, 1946, in Sheridan. The couple purchased a ranch on Beaver Creek in 1950. Mrs. Ankney resided there until her death. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church for 67 years and also belonged to St. Joseph's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Red Grade Homeowner's Club, a past member of the Retired Nurse's Association and the Beaver Creek School Board and a former 4-H leader. She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, gardening especially raising raspberries and knitted many pairs of mittens and caps for St. Joseph's Children's Home in Torrington. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother. Survivors include two sons, Jim of Beaver Creek and Leo of Sheridan; two daughters, Mary Kay Ankney of Springfield, Ore., and Marie Kallal of Jerseyville, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lily M. Darke, 97, of Sheridan died Monday, March 1, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Mrs. Darke was born Feb. 11, 1907, in Sheridan to John and Anna (Strandberg) Johnson. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She graduated from Wyoming Normal Training and, later, from the University of Wyoming. She married C. Hugh Abbott Oct. 29, 1926. They divorced in 1929. She married R. Frank Darke Nov. 7, 1935. She started teaching in 1929 at Elk Mountain School and taught for about 40 years in Sheridan and Johnson counties. She finished her last 19 years teaching grade school in Buffalo. She retired in 1972. The Darkes moved to Sheridan that year. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was active in a church circle and volunteered at Sheridan Manor (then called Eventide). She was a member of the Sheridan-Johnson County Pioneer Association and the national, state and local Retired Teachers associations. She was preceded in death by Mr. Darke in 1980 and by a son, Stephen J. Abbott, in 1988. Survivors include four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wolney was born Sept. 22, 1908, in Dietz (camp) 7 to Joseph and Mary (Legerski) Wolney. He grew up and attended school in the Monarch area. He also attended a trade school in Kansas City. He married Minnie Rulli June 6, 1930, in Monarch. He worked in the coal mine at Monarch and later owned Wolney Electric in Sheridan for many years. Mrs. Wolney died Oct. 15, 1962. Mr. Wolney married Dolores Campbell Jones July 23, 1966. She died April 28, 1987. Mr. Wolney was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, a life member of the Third and Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus and a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, flowers and animals. He enjoyed the mountains and owned a cabin near Burgess Junction for many years. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose James, Mary Kedl and Helen Kincaid; and a stepdaughter, Rita Ann Jones Craft. Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Peterson of Reno, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Wagner of Wellington, Colo.; two brothers, Paul of Carson City, Nev., and Robert of Aurora, Colo.; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Buntjer was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, making dolls, painting and playing bingo. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, June Fournier of Sheridan and Aldora McIntosh of Billings; a sister, Shirley Madding of Sheridan; six grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Twila Marie Leis, 65, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor William Heine officiating. Miss Leis was born Dec. 31, 1938, in Sheridan to Alex and Ruth (Albrecht) Leis. She was a 1956 graduate of Sheridan High School. She worked at the Palace Cafe as a cook, and also worked in the kitchens of Sheridan Center Best Western and Sheridan VA Medical Center. She enjoyed listening to music, crocheting afghans, embroidering and reading. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Survivors include a sister, Virginia Burgess; two nieces; three nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Sheridan native Peter K. Jones, 69, of Buffalo died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Johnson County Health Care Center. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Mike Moon officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services. Mr. Jones was born May 2, 1934, in Sheridan to Ezra K. and Grace Jones. The family moved to Detroit soon after he was born, then to Buffalo in 1947. Mr. Jones was a 1952 graduate of Johnson County High School and attended The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., where he was captain of the football team and a member of the wrestling team. He received a wrestling scholarship to the University of Michigan and later transferred to the University of Wyoming, where he was 1957 and 1958 Rocky Mountain Conference wrestling champion at 147 pounds. He competed in rodeo in rough stock events and was a rodeo clown. He also worked as a smoke jumper. He married Doris Nelson Sept. 30, 1960, in Casper. They lived in Colorado, where Mr. Jones was in the insurance business. He semiretired in 1999, and they returned to Buffalo. They recently purchased Granny's Bloomers and the Posy Patch. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cynthia. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Elizabeth Morse and Kalene Guenther, both of Austin, Texas, and Jacqueline Hill of Greeley, Colo.; two brothers, Craig of Buffalo and Asa of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Glory Little of Leiter, Mary Swartz of Casper and Kyle Wollschlager of Columbus, Mont.; and five grandchildren.

Ruth Vera Hurley, 95, of Sheridan died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Hurley was born Oct. 1, 1908, in Ranchester to George and Carrie (Johnson) Oelschlager. She married Frank Mates in 1924. He died in 1961. She married Robert Hurley in 1963. Mrs. Hurley enjoyed reading religious books, embroidering, gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by Mr. Hurley; five sisters, Louise Oelschlager, Annie Jackson, Hazel Pawlus, Thelma Jackson and Evelyn Kerwald; and four brothers, Walter, John, Lee and Henry. Survivors include a daughter, Bernice Barber of Sheridan; a son, Albert Mates of Fairfax, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Nova Lee Duncan, 80, of Sheridan died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation and graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Fort Collins, Colo. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Duncan was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Sidon (White County), Ark., to Tom and Telie (Martindill) Patterson. She grew up and attended schools in the Sidon area. She moved to California and married Ruben Duncan July 18, 1942, in San Francisco. The Duncans spent most of their lives in California. Mrs. Duncan was a homemaker. The family moved to Longmont, Colo., in 1972. They later lived in Loveland, Colo. Mr. Duncan died in 1997, and Mrs. Duncan moved to Sheridan in 1998 to be near her daughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Hassel of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Charlie of Kelso, Wash.; three daughters, Judy Stahl of Sheridan, Wanda Rogers of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Gerri Myers of Loveland; two brothers, James Patterson of Arizona and Kenny Patterson of Illinois; two sisters, Velma English and Lorene Lucas, both of Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Carl T. McDowell, 54, of Yelm, Wash., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in Providence St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia, Wash., of a heart attack, according to his family. He was son of Thomas McDowell and brother of Barbara Talmadge, both of Ranchester. Mr. Yelm was a carpenter, specializing in cabinetry, and an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his mother, Loreen, and an infant son. In addition to his father and sister, survivors include his children, Robbyn, Adam, Lucas, Angela, Nicholas and Jason; a brother, Dale; two sisters, Terry Troyer and Donna Harrington; and several grandchildren.
