Mr. Andrews, 68, died March 23 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. His obituary appeared in Monday's Sheridan Press.

Jess F. Troutman

Jess F. Troutman, 84, Sheridan, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, Pastors Tim Charles and Scott Lee officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born March 7, 1921, in Wappapello, Mo., to John Franklin and Allie Belle (Jett) Troutman, he moved with his family to Wyoming at age 6 months and resided in Dayton for about one year. The Troutmans then moved to the homestead at Passaic until the children were school-age, at which time they returned to Dayton. Mr. Troutman attended school in Wakely, Dietz and Dayton and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1942. He entered the Army that fall and served in the 7th Infantry Division in World War II, achieving the rank of private first class, light mortar crewman. Discharged in October 1945, he received two Purple Hearts, five Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. His campaigns included the Aleutian Islands and the Southern Philippines. He married Florence Kay McEwen on June 2, 1950, in Kimberly, Idaho. Mr. Troutman worked on the family ranch and also 22 years as a nurse's aide at Sheridan VA Hospital, where he earned the Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife moved to Sheridan when his health declined. He loved the mountains and also enjoyed working the land, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He was a life member of Sheridan American Legion Post 7 and also belonged to Church of God Prophecy. A son, four sisters and a brother preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John C. Troutman of Clearmont and Jesse C. Troutman of Buffalo; three daughters, Betty R. Seely of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Susan K. Puliafico of Billings, and Donna A. Richards of Sheridan; a sister, Betty Belle Porter of Arvada, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Senior Center in care of Cowboy State Bank, P.O. Box 789, Ranchester, WY 82839.

 

Dorothy A. Smith

Dorothy Arline Smith, 93, Sheridan, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 1 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel, Buffalo. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo, the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Born Nov. 11, 1911, in Reliance to Elmer and Bertha Kimsey, she graduated from Moorcroft High School in 1930 and started teaching school in Upton. She married Verne Kirby in Belle Fourche, S.D., in 1933. They lived in Moorcroft and Casper until his death in 1954. She married Robert Smith in 1959 in Buffalo, where they ranched. They wintered in Brady, Texas, Green Valley, Ariz., and San Carlos, Mexico. Mr. Smith died in 1991. Mrs. Smith enjoyed flowers, travel, and her many friends at Sugarland Ridge Retirement and Assisted Living Center. In addition to her husbands, a sister and a brother preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Alfred Smith of Buffalo; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four nieces; and a nephew. Sarah Draper

Sarah Draper, 58, Sheridan, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at her residence. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be later in Colorado. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born March 9, 1947, in Glenwood Springs, Colo., to William and Alice (Gould) Lawrence, she grew up in Colorado and Wyoming and married Albert Gunnett in 1963. They divorced. She married Donald Draper in 1969. They divorced in 1985. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, sewing, cooking, and especially spending time with her grandson, Coleton. Her father and an infant sister, Sherrin, preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, William Paul Gunnett of Sheridan; a daughter, Kayla Draper of Ranchester; two stepsons, Robert Draper of Castle Rock, Colo., and Donald Draper Jr. of Grand Junction, Colo.; her mother of Craig, Colo.; a brother, Spencer Lawrence of Craig; a sister, Janice Letsinger; a grandson; a nephew; and a great-niece.

Richard Andrews, 68, Sheridan, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Sept. 20, 1936, in Cheyenne to M.J. and Esther Andrews, he was a RENEW client before joining Sheridan VA Medical Center, where he worked 21 years. Mr. Andrews enjoyed trips to Billings with fellow employees, Day Break at the Senior Center, and listening to music, especially big bands. Survivors include his caregivers, Terry Wirtzberger and Ryan Heagney.

 

Selma H. Kosel

Selma H. Kosel, 100, Sheridan, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Services were this morning at Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Rev. William Heine officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Sept. 13, 1904, in Warner, S.D., to Gustav and Clara (Ristau) Weiss, she grew up in the Alaska, S.D., area and married Arthur Kosel on Jan. 9, 1927, in Alaska. They later moved to Mobridge, S.D., where they resided until 1944. They also lived in Spearfish, S.D., and Gillette before moving to Sheridan in 1946. Mrs. Kosel worked at Chapeks Ben Franklin store for many years. She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was organist for many years. She also was a member of AARP and active in the Senior Center. Her husband, four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Marttila of Milbank, S.D., and Delores Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Florence LaToush, 62, Ranchester, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 1 p.m. April 3 at the Mountain Inn in Dayton with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Born April 20, 1942, in Sheridan to Harry Robert and Josephine Alice (Kusel) LaToush, she lived all her life in the Sheridan area. She married Bert Graham here in 1960, and they divorced. She enjoyed the mountains, flowers, ranching, camping, watching her grandson's football games, playing dice with her friends, and prairie dog control with her brother, Bruce. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Stacia Graham, in 1980 and by her brother, Bruce. Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Haveman of Ranchester; a sister, Roberta Clabaugh of Otto, N.C.; five grandchildren; a nephew; and two nieces. Vincent P. Johnston

Vincent Paul Johnston, 77, Sheridan, died Monday, March 21, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A celebration of life is 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with private burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception for family and friends is 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Prime Time Steakhouse, 2091 S. Sheridan Ave. Born May 31, 1927, in Denver to Bert K. and Pauline (Snydal) Johnston, he grew up in Ranchester and graduated from high school there in 1944. He then joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. After the service, he graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1949 with a degree in business administration. He married Mary Jean Hill in 1949. He moved to Laurel, Mont., and worked a short time for Johnston Lumber Co. He then moved to Billings, where he was a building contractor until moving to Sheridan in 1955. Mr. Johnston started A.B.C. Builders and A.B.C. Realty Co. He was involved in numerous business ventures including developing subdivisions, the Ranch House Restaurant in Ranchester, and the Golden Steer in Sheridan. He was a mineral broker and active in the business community at the time of his death. In 1968 he was national runner-up as Small Business Owner of the Year. He married Marjorie Redington in 1972. A member of Elks Lodge and American Legion in Sheridan, he was an avid racquetball player (with an invitational named after him) and also enjoyed fishing, fly-tying, gardening, and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife; twin sons, Daniel Johnston of Hancock, N.H., and David Johnston of Fairport, N.Y.; three daughters, Laurie Sheeley of Parkman, Leslie (Missy) Wolfe of Cheyenne, and Kelly White of Dayton; a brother, Bert Johnston of Dallas; a sister, Nina Litton of Powell; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. James `Bob' Rourke

James F. “Bob” Rourke, 77, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home in Gillette of natural causes. He was father of Kerry Vaudrey of Sheridan and Gillette. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home, Gillette, with rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Gillette, the Rev. Thomas Kadera officiating. Burial in Mount Pisgah Cemetery, Gillette, will follow with full military honors by American Legion Post 42. Born Aug. 2, 1927, in Gillette to Charles J. and Mary Ellen (Wetzel) Rourke, he grew up and attended school in Gillette. After completing high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, served in the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged. He married Anne Percifield on March 18, 1956, in Gillette. They moved to the family ranch south of Gillette, where they raised their family. Mr. Rourke loved the ranch, and even after his retirement he spent many hours farming and haying. His favorite was running the swather. He looked forward to hunting elk and whitetail deer and to the many friends who came to the ranch to hunt. He enjoyed golfing in Arizona, playing cards with family and friends and boating. He maintained a fishing cabin in Story. A life member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, he also belonged to Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 42 in Gillette and served on various committees. In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife; two sons,Terry and Chuck Rourke, both of Gillette; three sisters, Vione Lane and Kathryn Jackson, both of Gillette, and Bonnie Wenande of Oshoto; a brother, Paul Rourke of Gillette; seven grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Bernard, and daughter, Pamela Rose, preceded him in death. Johnnye F. Miller

Johnnye Faye Miller, 74, Sheridan, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at her residence. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home, the Rev. Stephen Anderson officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Strong City, Okla., to Ralph and Helen (Clark) Small, she graduated from high school and married Bruce Miller on June 24, 1961, at her parents' home. Mrs. Miller belonged to Grace Baptist Church and was known as a dedicated homemaker. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janice Miller of Sheridan and Terri Hutchison of Lincoln, Neb.; three sisters; a brother; and four grandchildren.

 

Malcolm J. McRae

Malcolm John McRae, 76, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, of cancer at Horizon Hospice Home in Billings. He was brother of Audrey Thompson of Sheridan. Services are 1 p.m. March 28 in the Forsyth (Mont.) Middle School gymnasium with arrangements by Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth. Cremation has taken place. Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Forsyth to Evan and Alice McRae, he worked on the family ranch and graduated from Forsyth High School in 1946. He served in the Army from 1949 to 1952, including one year in the Korean War. He married Patricia Savidge on May 10, 1952. They moved to the family ranch on the Tongue River. In 1969 Mr. McRae bought a hardware store in Ashland, Mont., which he operated until 1991. He served 10 years as Rosebud County (Mont.) commissioner and 18 years on school boards in Ashland and Colstrip, Mont. He was also active in Southeastern Stockgrowers Association, Tongue River Electric Co-op, and Ashland Water and Sewer District. He and his wife moved to Billings in 1992. He enjoyed his grandchildren, friends, gardening, golf, and helping his grown children with their chores. In addition to his sister, survivors include his wife; four children, Marla Jo Gorecki of Helena, Mont., and John, Jim, and Nancy McRae, all of Billings; a brother, Evan (Duke) McRae Jr. of Billings; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Shirley Ann Legerski

Former Sheridan resident Shirley Ann Legerski, 60, of Billings died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at her residence. Rosary was Friday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. today at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will be Monday at Cavalry Cemetery at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Mrs. Legerski was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Kearney, Neb., to Clifford and Violet (Goff) Rasmussen. The family moved to Sheridan in 1946. Mrs. Legerski graduated from Sheridan High School and attended Sheridan College for a year and a half. She married Charles Legerski on June 11, 1965. They moved from Sheridan to Dayton, Ohio, then to Casper before settling in Billings in 1969. Mrs. Legerski worked at St. John's Nursing Home for four years. She enjoyed cooking and helped at St. Pius X Church with potlucks and dinners. She also enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening, bowling and shopping. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kathy Legerski-Wilson of North Pole, Alaska, and Melissa Legerski-Schneider of Billings; a brother, Edward Rasmussen of Laramie; and one grandchild. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Former Sheridan resident Patrick M. Barber, 61, of Ellensburg, Wash., died in Ellensburg on Wednesday, March 9, 2005. Military service and burial were in Tahoma National Cemetery at Kent, Wash. Survivors include his wife, Carol; a brother, Herbert of Carlisle, Pa.; and a daughter, Lisa, his mother, Bernice, and a sister, Linda Barker, all of Sheridan.

Esther Lena Rauzi, 81, Sheridan, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Vigil services are 7 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy is 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Aug. 1, 1923, in Sheridan to Stefan and Theresa (Wegher) Rauzi, she lived here all her life. She belonged to Holy Name Catholic Church and enjoyed people, music, her family and going to Daybreak at the Senior Citizens Center. A brother, Victor, preceded her in death. Survivors include a brother, Frank Rauzi, Sheridan; a sister, Mary Pearce, Ranchester; and two nephews. Mary Podgornik, 89, Sheridan, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating, with burial in New Eagles Cemetery. Born Jan. 9, 1916, in Acme to John and Mary (Weber) Povsner, she attended Hymans Business College and married Ed Podgornik on June 1, 1947, in Hardin, Mont. Mrs. Podgornik worked as a Sheridan Press proofreader, at Capital Drug, and for 24 years in the Sheridan Memorial Hospital kitchen. Her great joy was raising and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Podgornik, and her husband. Survivors include two sons, Jon and James Podgornik, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Roberta Cooley of Billings and Marilee Morgareidge of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Mamie E. Nickel, 76, Sheridan, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At her request, cremation has taken place, and private family services will be this summer. Born Oct. 11, 1928, in Sheridan to Mike and Gladys (Paustian) Janich, she grew up and attended schools in Wyoming and Montana and graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1946. She married Tony Nickel on Dec. 18, 1948, in Billings. Mrs. Nickel worked for the Billings Phone Co. before moving in 1952 to Sheridan, where she worked for Safeway Store and the old Hospital Pharmacy. A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, baking, sewing, crafts, and especially spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Mike Nickel of Sheridan and Mark Nickel of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Toni Kukuchka of Dayton and Peg Parkison of Sheridan; a brother, Glen “Bud” Janich of Arizona; a sister, Virginia “Pokey” White of Ranchester; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Wake services are 7 o'clock to midnight tonight at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church with burial in Lame Deer (Mont.) Cemetery. Born July 23, 1957, in Sheridan to Joe G. Solis and Josephine Annie Littlemouth Solis, she grew up and attended school in Sheridan. Survivors include her husband, Adrian; four daughters, Danielle Castro of Texas and Jessica and Dawn Castro and Adrianna Medicine Horse, all of Hardin, Mont.; three sons, Jarrod Paul Solis of Great Falls, Mont., and Jesse Castro and Adrian J. Medicine Horse Jr., both of Hardin; six sisters, Rosita DeTavenier and Jolene Ekis, both of Sheridan, Juanita Solis and Mary Ann Cummins, both of Lodge Grass, Mont., Betty Jo Big Lake of Billings, and Betsy Bixby of Lame Deer; five brothers, Carlos Solis, Gilbert Solis, and Steve Solis, all of Lame Deer, John Solis of Sheridan, and Jeffery Solis of Lodge Grass; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. John C. Smith Jr.

John Claybern Smith Jr., 83, Hardin, Mont., died Friday, March 11, 2005, at Heritage Acres Nursing Home there. Better known as “Junior Smith,” he was father of George Smith of Sheridan. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Little Brown Church in Lodge Grass, Mont., with burial in Lodge Grass Cemetery. Born Nov. 28, 1921, in Lodge Grass to John C. “Jack” and Sadie LaVora (Hite) Smith, he grew up on the N Bar Ranch on Rotten Grass Creek and attended schools there and in Lodge Grass. He went to work at age 16 wrangling horses on the Antler Ranch and married Corinna L. McDowell on June 1, 1944, at the SU Ranch. They lived for a time on Rotten Grass working at the N Bar for his father. In 1948 Mr. Smith took over SU management for Faddis Kennedy Cattle Co. After working at the Connolly and Shoulder Blade camps, the couple returned in 1954 to the SU and remained there until 1970, when they moved to their own ranch in Ekalaka, Mont. They returned to the Lodge Grass area in 1980 and retired to Hardin in 2000. Mr. Smith was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by two half brothers, a half sister, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; two additional sons, Aubry of Billings and Tim of Lodge Grass; a daughter, Linda Schiffer of Buffalo; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a nephew. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Heritage Acres Nursing Home, Big Horn County Historical Museum, or donor's choice. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary, Hardin.

Danny Ray Fauber, 40, Sheridan, died Sunday, March 12, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Family Life Center Church, the Rev. Doug Meacham officiating, with arrangements by Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Sept. 15, 1964, in Sheridan to Stanley and Patricia (Whitehair) Fauber, he grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. He married Connie Pehringer here on Nov. 17, 1984. He worked on various ranches and at Sheridan Meat Co. until joining the Memorial Hospital engineering department in 1989. A member of Family Life Center Church, he enjoyed snow machining, horseback riding, camping, and playing softball and volleyball. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jesse Fauber, Bozeman, Mont.; a daughter, Kayla Fauber, Sheridan; his parents of Sheridan; and five brothers, Bradley, Michael, Joseph, Chad, and Jeffrey Fauber, all of Sheridan. Sheridan native William Edward Billingsley, 65, of Joliet, Mont., died Thursday, March 10, 2005, in Deaconess Billings Clinic from complications of lung cancer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Joliet Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Joliet Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are with Smith Funeral Chapel of Laurel, Mont. Mr. Billingsley was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Sheridan to William (Pat) and Wavel Shipley Billingsley. He lived in Lodge Grass, Mont., until 1950, when the family moved to Joliet. He graduated from Joliet High School in 1958 and from the University of Montana-Missoula in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business. He married Beverly Cozad on Sept. 1, 1962, in Wheatland while he was in the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked for Burroughs Corp. before returning to ranching in 1976. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lisa McLean of Lamar, Colo.; a son, Scott of Fargo, N.D.; his parents of Joliet; a sister, Evagene of Shepherd, Mont.; and three grandchildren. David F. Phillips

David F. Phillips, 89, Sheridan, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Services were this morning at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Sept. 7, 1915, in Faxen, Okla., to Joseph Issac and Louisa Jane (Rhodes) Phillips, he moved at age 6 with his family to Midwest and a year later to Sheridan, where he grew up and attended school. Mr. Phillips worked three years at Western Union and two years on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. He married Alice Littler on Nov. 18, 1939, in Hardin, Mont. He joined the Army in 1943 and was sent to Burma for three years, where he worked on the Burma Road as a truck driver. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Sheridan, where he worked as a letter carrier and window clerk for the post office and as a railway mail clerk. After retiring from the post office in 1977, he drove a bus for the Sheridan school district for three years, then worked six years as a bookkeeper for Valley Motor Supply. A member of First Baptist Church, he particularly enjoyed the Sheridan mountains, going for rides with his wife, fishing, woodworking, fly-tying, and spending time with his family. His wife, six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Dave and Don Phillips, both of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Dorothy McPhillamey

Former Sheridan-area resident Dorothy Irene McPhillamey, 86, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Aspen Meadows Retirement Home in Billings. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born to Wilber and Elizabeth Olson Martin on April 27, 1918, in Crawford, Neb., she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1937. She married James W. Duncan, and they divorced. She then married Wallace McPhillamey in 1960. He died in 1978. Mrs. McPhillamey worked at several retail stores in Sheridan, retiring from the J.C. Penney store after 30 years. She moved to Billings in 2002 to be near family when ill health started to limit her activity. She belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for many years and served a term as state president. She enjoyed dancing, travel to South America, Alaska, and Hawaii, and watching the Denver Broncos. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur, a grandson, Scott, and a granddaughter, Sandee. Survivors include two sons, James Duncan of Billings and Richard Duncan of Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Shriners Hospital, or a charity of one's choice.

Born May 16, 1919, in Hardin, Mont., to Henry and Mary (Wombolt) Weibert, she lived on a farm in Hardin until moving to Sheridan in 1942. She married Jake Butkay on June 2, 1935, in Hardin. Mrs. Butkay enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking, travel, and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Carol Butkay and Barbara Ketcham; two brothers, Henry and Palmer; and three sisters, Tena Bumbaca, Ella Eshleman, and Mary Fellows. Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Ley, Dayton, Charlene White, Craig, Colo., and Marilyn Murphy, Story; a brother, Fred Weibert, Upton; two sisters, Martha Peret, Herminston, Ore., and Katherine Hartung, Crow Agency, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Born July 19, 1923, in Glendive, Mont., to H.A. and Mary (Bush) Zimdars, he joined the Army after school and was honorably discharged. After returning home from the service, he married Ruth Rahr in 1947 in Miles City, Mont. Mr. Zimdars worked 35 years for Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., eventually becoming construction foreman. A life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, he also belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge 520, and American Legion Post 7. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Patricia Zimdars; a granddaughter, Beata Kamran; and a brother, Julius Zimdars. Born Sept. 27, 1927, in Minneota, Minn., to Clara and Martin Teigland, he attended school in Minneota and was drafted into the Army in 1944. He served as a surgical technician in Japan. He married Marlys Maertens on June 10, 1954, and they lived in Canby, Minn., where he was a partner in his father-in-law's propane and liquid fertilizer business. Mr. Teigland loved hunting, fishing, camping and the mountains. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Sara Mathieson, White Bear Lake, Minn.; five children, Mari Hoyt of San Antonio, Patrick of Riverton, David of Story, Jon of Sheridan, and Jana Thompson of Spearfish, S.D.; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bernard Austin “Bernie” Breen, 77, Sheridan, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lodge Grass (Mont.) Cemetery with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Born Feb. 24, 1928, in Baker, Mont., to Thomas and Cecil (Clark) Breen, he served in the Army from March 1946 until his honorable discharge in September 1947. He married Lila Mae Buckingham in 1950. Mr. Breen ranched all his life in the Lodge Grass and Hardin, Mont., area. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing in dance bands, and cribbage. He loved all border collies, but his two special ones were Lady and Missy. He also loved a horse named Babe. Two sisters, five brothers and a grandson preceded him in death. Survivors include seven children, Frances Kenyon, North Pole, Alaska, Ellen Gonzales, Williston, N.D., Bill Breen and Bernard A. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military honors by American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Born Aug. 4, 1915, in Esconaba, Mich., to Ernest and Susan (Penitcoff) Buntjer, he worked as a law-enforcement officer for North Las Vegas, Nev., from 1969 to 1987 and as municipal court bailiff. He served 16 years as Santa Claus for the North Las Vegas Junior Chamber of Commerce. He married Louise Belish on Dec. 21, 1959. They retired to Sheridan, and Mrs. Buntjer died in 2004. He belonged to Foot Printers Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Drum and Bugle Corps in Billings. He loved horses, music, TV and rodeos. A sister and brother preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Lefever, Gladstone, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Aldora McIntosh, Billings; four grandchildren; one adopted grandson; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Gordon Macalister on Jan. 19, 1941, in Red Cloud, Neb. Mrs. Macalister worked many years in her husband's accounting office before joining Sheridan's First National Bank as internal auditor, from which she retired. She attended Sheridan College and the University of Wyoming, graduating in 1974 with a business degree and becoming a certified public accountant. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan and a 50-year member of both P.E.O. Sisterhood and Daughters of the American Revolution. She also enjoyed family genealogy. Richard W. Smith, 87, Sheridan, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. At his request, cremation has taken place, and services will be later in Anchorage, Alaska. Born Sept. 20, 1917, in Powers, Ore., to Billy Head and Cora (Chapman) Smith, he grew up and attended school in Oregon and graduated from Willamette University in 1940. He married Glenna Della Lewis on Dec. 20, 1940. Mr. Smith lived more than 50 years in Alaska and worked as an accountant in Anchorage. After retiring, he worked as a children's school bus attendant in Anchorage, Loveland, Colo., and Big Horn, where he was better known as “Grandpa Smith.” He was past exalted ruler of the Anchorage Elks Club and member of Pioneers of Alaska. His wife, two sisters and a son preceded him in death. Survivors include four sons, Ronald E. Smith, Loveland, Michael L. Smith and Harry D. “Beany” Smith, both of Anchorage, and Billy C. Smith, Kenai, Alaska; a daughter, Patricia L. Fisher, Big Horn; a brother, Eugene C. Smith, Anchorage; 14 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

 

Constance Miller

Constance “Connie” Miller, 83, Sheridan, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Her cremains will be scattered in Sunlight Basin north of Cody. Memorial services will be announced later with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Born Feb. 1, 1922, in Cody, Neb., to Albert and Myrtle (Hendricks) Colvin, she married Thomas Schwartz in 1940. They lived in Wichita, Kan., where she worked for the Air Force, transferring to Casper in 1943. She married Michael Miller in 1948. They owned and operated the Silver Dollar Bar in Lusk for 12 years. They bought the K-Z Guest Ranch north of Cody and operated it for 17 years. They also owned the Wonder Bar in Cody. They moved from Cody to Sheridan in 1993. Mrs. Miller supported wildlife habitat and loved nature, the mountains and fishing. Her husband and a sister, Bobbie, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Schwartz Pratt, Los Olivas, Calif., and Karna Miller, Sheridan; a son, Mick Miller, Casper; three grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Warren Stevenson

W. Warren Stevenson, 66, Buffalo, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Johnson County Health Care Center. He was father of Gary Stevenson of Sheridan. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, the Rev. George Greer officiating, followed by graveside services at Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Born April 23, 1938, in Buffalo to Willard and Katheryn Hotchkiss Stevenson, he grew up in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1956. He attended Sheridan College for a couple of years before joining the Air Force. A communications specialist, he was stationed in Japan and Taipei, Taiwan. He married Jacque Robbins on Jan. 28, 1960, in Buffalo, and they lived in Taiwan until June 1961. They then returned to Buffalo, where he worked as a Wyoming Highway Department engineer. Mr. Stevenson also operated a guide and hunting service for many years and was an instrument-rated commercial pilot. The couple moved in 1968 to Cheyenne, where he continued working for the highway department. They returned in 1970 to Buffalo, became the consignee for Texaco, and eventually purchased the bulk plant and Texaco gas stations. The stations were upgraded to convenience stores, including a liquor store, and Mr. Stevenson retired in 2003. He belonged to the Episcopal Church, Anchor Lodge 7, AF&AM, and Kalif Shrine. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and many friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, outdoor recreation, and working on his computer. In addition to his son, survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sandy Jenkins-Solorio of Ashland, Kan.; and five grandchildren. F.S. `Dusty' Rhoades

F.S. “Dusty” Rhoades, 89, Sheridan, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. At his request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Nov. 12, 1915, in Blackie, Canada, to William Julius and Vesta Armenta (Wilson) Rhoades, he moved at age 5 with his family to Washington state. There he grew up and attended school in Snohomish and Whatcom counties and attended high school in Bellingham. He joined the National Guard after high school. In May 1941 he joined the Army serving in the Asian-Pacific and European-African-Middle Eastern theaters. He was discharged in July 1945 and went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Bellingham, from which he retired in 1975. He married Evva Lavera Townsend on Jan. 15, 1945, in Texas. She died in 1990. He married Vera Kaufmann on Oct. 9, 1993, in Bellingham, where they resided until moving to Sheridan in 2000. Mr. Rhoades belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sheridan and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He enjoyed boats, walks, playing cards, and spending time with his family. A son, a daughter, a brother, and two sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jim Manning of Coulee Dam, Wash., Ken Rhoades of Columbia, Md., Rod Rhoades of Bellingham, and Clifford Kaufmann of Tigard, Ore.; a daughter, Charlene Church of Story; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
