BUFFALO — Former Buffalo resident Larry Carl Grant, 86, of Midwest died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, in Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Harold Jarrard Park with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday in the park. Burial will be in the Kaycee Cemetery. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family in care of the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.

Marguerite G. Stevie

Funeral services for Marguerite G. Stevie, 89, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Ms. Stevie died Saturday, March 25, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. She was born June 21, 1916, in Sheridan to Richard and Ruth (Simons) Stevie. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She was deputy Sheridan County treasurer for 45 years. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening and going out for coffee. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Eva Mae Benson

Eva Mae Benson, 87, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Benson was born July 18, 1918, in Lock Haven, Pa., to Harry J. and Linetta (Beck) Ryan. She grew up and attended school in Pennsylvania including Temple University in Philadelphia. She married Charles C. Benson in 1939 in Pennsylvania. They lived in Florida, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Kansas City, Overland Park, Kan., Akron, Ohio, and Albuquerque, N.M., before moving to Sheridan in 1998. She enjoyed painting and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a son, Charles of Big Horn; two brothers, Leo Ryan of Albuquerque and Mark Ryan of Jersey Shore, Pa.; a sister, Rose Barrett of Lock Haven; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

 

Guy William Joy

Funeral services for Guy William Joy, 94, of Buffalo will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. He was father of Gary Joy of Sheridan. Visitation will be noon until 9 p.m. Thursday and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverside Cemetery in Cody. Mr. Joy died Monday, March 27, 2006, in Johnson County Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 9, 1911, in Franklin, Neb., to Guy and Myrtle Joy. He was a 1929 graduate of Franklin High School and played basketball throughout his high school years. He married Evalyn Graf on Oct. 9, 1932. He farmed in Cora, Kan., until drought and the Great Depression forced a change. He attended barber school in Omaha, Neb., then moved to Casper in 1936. He worked as a barber for a short time and operated a gas station. He and his wife worked at Montgomery Ward for several years. At the start of World War II, Mr. Joy went to work for the U.S. Office of Price Administration. The family moved in 1944 to Cody, where Mr. Joy worked for Webster Chevrolet, operated a trucking/feed store business, raised pigs, operated a gas station, managed the Cody Country Club, had a floral/landscaping business, was parts manager for P&S Auto, was manager for the Elks Club for several years, and worked for the school district on outside maintenance. He was a member of the Cody Stampede board of directors and for many years drove the stagecoach for the Cody Night Rodeo. He was a member of the Cody BPO Elks Lodge, Cody Lions Club, a charter member of the Olive-Glenn Country Club, and a member of the Cody Volunteer Fire Department, serving as its chief for several years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed horses, the outdoors, fishing and camping, riding in the mountains, and dancing to big band music. Mrs. Joy died in 1994, and Mr. Joy moved to Buffalo in 1996. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister. Survivors include two other sons, Paul of Cheyenne and Bill of Buffalo; a daughter, Lainey Cole of Cody; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Duane H. Powers

Memorial services for Duane H. Powers, 53, of Sheridan will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Duprey and Dan Goodenough officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Powers died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at his residence. He was born June 22, 1952, in Sheridan to Gerald and Geneva (Goodwin) Powers. He grew up in the Quietus and Sayle areas of Montana, attending a one-room school on Bear Creek and graduating from high school in 1970. He worked on family ranches in Montana and Wyoming. He owned and operated Sheridan Air Service for a time as well as Powers Construction. He married Betty L. Mitchell in June 2002 in a cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, making pole furniture, going to his cabin, collecting toy tractors and square dancing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Land Development Contractors of America, Snomads, Jeans & Queens square dance club, and a 4-H leader. He was a past member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and Sheridan Area Search & Rescue. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gerald and David; his mother; and a sister, Susan Beasley, all of Sheridan. Glenn Jennings Burgess

Glenn Jennings Burgess, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 26, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Riverton. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret's. A second viewing will be 8-9 a.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Home in Riverton. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in Black Hills National Cemetery. Mr. Burgess was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Casper to Glen and Evangeline (LeVeque) Burgess. He grew up in Spearfish, S.D., and graduated from Spearfish High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Black Hills State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree in education. He obtained a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He married Mary Kathleen “Tiny” Regan on Aug. 20, 1947, in Sturgis, S.D. He enjoyed coaching, competing in and watching high school and college athletics, hunting, fishing, waterskiing and snow skiing. He began his coaching career in South Dakota. The family moved to Riverton in 1959, and Mr. Burgess coached and taught in there until 1973. He later directed the vocational education program in Billings. From 1980 until 1986, when he retired, he was an administrator and coach at Riverton. After retiring, he and his wife traveled with their children and families, and Mr. Burgess competed in the Senior Olympics. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin and Terry, both of Sheridan; four daughters, Kathy Ketcham of Choteau, Mont., Karen Huxtable of Riverton, Penny Bellah of Buffalo and Peggy Hinman of Hay Springs, Neb.; siblings Martin of Wittenberg, Wis., Beatrice Trople of Salt Lake City, and Annette Shultz of Mason City, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Lucille B. `Peggy' Holsinger

Former Sheridan County resident Lucille B. “Peggy” Holsinger, 86, of Dallas, Ore., died Thursday, March 16, 2006, in Dallas Retirement Village. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery next to the grave of her husband, Edgar Holsinger. Arrangements are with Bollman Funeral Home of Dallas, Ore., assisted by Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan. Mrs. Holsinger was born April 30, 1919, in Sterling, Colo. She married Mr. Holsinger on June 19, 1938, in Sheridan. She was a librarian for the Big Horn School District for many years until 1984, when she retired. Afterward, she and Mr. Holsinger owned Gospel Garden Bookstore in Sheridan for 10 years. Mrs. Holsinger helped establish a Christian school library in Sheridan. Survivors include a daughter, Dixie L. Roberts of Salem, Ore.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Union Gospel Mission in Salem or Cornerstone Christian Church in Sheridan. Guy William “Bill” Joy, 94, of Buffalo died Monday, March 27, 2006, in Johnson County Hospital. He was father of Gary Joy of Sheridan. Arrangements are pending, according to his family.

BUFFALO — Graveside services for the infant daughter of Kate and Dave Harness will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. The infant was stillborn Monday, March 27, 2006. Carl Bartenhagen

Graveside services with military honors for Carl Bartenhagen, 76, of Sheridan were this morning in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Jon Welsch of First Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Bartenhagen died Thursday, March 23, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Sheridan to William and Eleanor Bartenhagen. He attended Sheridan schools and joined the Navy at age 17. After 30 years in the Navy, he drove for Safeway Groceries for 22 years. He retired and returned to Sheridan with his wife, Genny. He enjoyed working in his garage and yard. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Harley Bartenhagen of Sheridan and Wesley Hoffman of Washington; and a sister, Lois Miech of Sheridan. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Simmons of Sheridan; a sister, Eunice Hanson of Sandy, Utah; and three grandsons.

Flora Mae `Snooks' Adsit

Former Sheridan resident Flora Mae “Snooks” Adsit, 66, of Buffalo died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, in Wyoming Medical Center in Casper of complications from a stroke. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Nancy Brooks officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside rites. Mrs. Adsit was born April 2, 1939, in Buffalo to Frank and Mildred Bybee. She was a 1957 graduate of Johnson County High School. She worked as a waitress for several area restaurants. She married Dick Germann in Buffalo in 1957. They were divorced. She married George Adsit in 1964. They made their home in Sheridan until 1976, when they were divorced. Mrs. Adsit worked for the Super Saver Motel for several years. She later worked for Thompson's Sheet Metal. She moved to Buffalo in 1997 and worked in the deli at D.J.'s. She enjoyed cake decorating, crafting, crocheting, gardening, camping, hunting and fishing. She was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include a daughter, Terri Thompson of Douglas; a son, Travus Adsit of Sheridan; her mother of Buffalo; two brothers, Tom Bybee of Buffalo and Gary Bybee of Elko, Nev.; and seven grandchildren.

James Truman Prell

A celebration of the life of James Truman Prell, 73, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Keller and David Duprey officiating. Mr. Prell died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at his residence. He was born May 25, 1932, in Benedict, Neb., to Lovell and Mildred (Beardsley) Prell. He graduated from high school in Anselma, Neb., in 1951. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and attended the University of Wyoming, later transferring to Chadron (Neb.) State College, where he was a member of the college's All-Conference undefeated football team in 1958 and 1959. He and his teammates were inducted into Chadron's Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He graduated from Chadron in 1960. He married Dorothy Mae Cooper on May 29, 1960, in Wood River, Neb. They moved from Chadron to Rising City, Neb., where he taught history and coached football and track. He later became a state bank examiner and an examiner for the Northwestern Bank Corp. The family moved to Hay Springs, Neb., in 1969, and he was executive vice president of the First National Bank. In 1971, the family moved to Worland, and he was president of Stockgrowers State Bank. The family moved to Sheridan in 1973, and Mr. Prell owned and operated the American Inn Motel until 1986, when he retired. He was coordinator for the Meals on Wheels program in Sheridan from 1990-2001. He and his wife spent part of their retirement in Yuma, Ariz. Mr. Prell was a member of Shrine, Masonic Lodge and International Association of Turtles Inc. and served six years as a city councilman, representing Sheridan's Ward 2. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Valerie Green and Cindy Prell, both of Sheridan, and Pam Johnson of Laramie; a brother, Fred of McCook, Neb.; a sister, Kay Marlow of Yuma; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Chadron State College Scholarship Fund or Peaks Volunteer Northern Rockies Cancer Center in care of Janet Bishop, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Bessie Barnett

Bessie Barnett, 97, of Sheridan died Sunday, March 19, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and the cremains will be buried later in Torrington, next to her husband. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Barnett was born June 11, 1908, in Ty Valley, Ore., to Hugh and Martha Faith. The family later moved to Wyoming. She married Lewis E. Barnett of Fort Laramie on May 23, 1927. They later moved to Veteran, where she was a school cook for 15 years. Mr. Barnett died in 1954, and she moved to Bailey, Colo., where she was a cook for the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union summer camps and convention. She later moved to Cheyenne and was cook for former Gov. Stan and Mrs. Hathaway until she retired. She was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Cheyenne. She enjoyed dancing and listening to music. Survivors include three children, Eddie of Jamestown, Calif., and Dorothy Cole and Darrell, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Bonnie Butler of Fort Laramie and Mary Trunkhill of North Bend, Wash.; two brothers, Charles Faith of Onalaska, Wash., and William Faith of Spokane, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

 

Mildred Meyer

Memorial services will be later for Mildred Meyer, 92, of Sheridan, who died Sunday, March 19, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Meyer was preceded in death by her husband, John. Survivors include a son, John of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Jeanne “Betty” Roman, 71, of Story died Tuesday, March 21, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Pines Church in Story. Robert W. Wallace

Sheridan native Robert W. Wallace, 82, of Yardley, Pa., died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, in Chandler Hall Hospice in Newton, Pa. Private services are planned later. Mr. Wallace attended Sheridan schools and graduated from the University of Wyoming. He taught school in Connecticut and moved to Yardley after he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was an avid gardener, sports fan and animal lover. He was a former employee of Jones of New York in Bristol, Pa. Survivors include his wife, Beverlie Dunham Wallace; a daughter, Deirdre Stecker of Morrisville, Pa.; two sons, Scott of Greeley, Colo., and Miles of Norwalk, Conn.; five grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Millard Milton Dickey

BUFFALO — Millard Milton Dickey, 79, of Buffalo died Saturday, March 18, 2006, in Johnson County Health Care Center. Private family inurnment will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Green Mountain Cemetery in Sundance. At Mr. Dickey's request, there will be no funeral services. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Robert T. Carson

Robert T. Carson, 80, of Sheridan died Friday, March 17, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital following a massive heart attack. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Mr. Carson was born March 14, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kan., to Theodore and Doris (Troy) Carson. He grew up and attended schools in Hutchinson. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 22, 1944, and served on the USS Shamrock Bay. He was honorably discharged March 23, 1946. After service, he returned to Kansas and worked in the oil fields. He followed the oil rigs through several states, eventually moving to Gillette, where he became known as "Bullet Bob." He married Frances Weltner on July 14, 1960, in Sheridan. They moved to Gillette, where they owned and operated a mobile home court, a motel, an apartment house and Camel Drilling Co. They moved the Weltner Wonder Museum — which was owned by Mrs. Carson's parents — from Hardin, Mont., to Gillette. They moved to Sheridan in 1977 and lived on a ranch on Big Goose Road. Mr. Carson started restoring antique and classic automobiles in 1969 and earned the nickname "Buick Bob," as he sold the cars all over the world. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and several antique car clubs in Sheridan. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying, riding horses and the mountains. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandson. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gary and Bill, both of Gillette, and Fred Stetz of Casper; a daughter, Shirley Donaldson of Rozet; three sisters, Midge and Marge, both of Kansas, and Diana of Alabama; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a recipient of the donor's choice.

Clarence 'Larry' Lewis III

Memorial services for Clarence "Larry" Lewis III, 57, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cornerstone Church with the Rev. Dave Wagner officiating. Additional memorial services will be later in San Diego. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, in Mayo St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Cremation has taken place. He was born Feb. 6, 1949, in San Diego to Clarence Lee and Barbara (Wright) Lewis. He was retired from the San Diego City Fire Department, where he worked as an engineer. He also was volunteer fire chief for the Julian Fire Department for 15 years. In his earlier years, he was an avid motorcycle racer and enjoyed boating, waterskiing and camping with his family. After moving to Wyoming, he enjoyed horseback riding, ranch roping, cattle work, raising hay, four-wheeling and hunting. He was president of the Big Horn Historical Society and the Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association. He was a member of the San Diego City Fire Fighters Relief Association and a past member of Los Senderos in San Diego. He was preceded in death by his father. Former Clearmont resident Roy Scott Graham, 81, of Buffalo died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at his residence. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. June 12 in Mound Valley Cemetery in Altamont, Kan. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mr. Graham was born July 5, 1924, in Altamont to Winfield Scott and Bessie Graham. He was a 1942 graduate of Altamont High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in December 1942 and served as a naval aviator during World War II. After the war, he obtained a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering from Kansas State University, then worked for Carter Oil in Venezuela from 1948-52. He married Raye Rita Taggart on July 23, 1955, in Cody. He worked as a petroleum engineer in Cut Bank, Mont., New York City and Old Greenwich, Conn. He consulted for various oil companies and retired in 1995 in Wellsville, Utah. He moved to Clearmont in 1996 to be near his son. He later moved to Buffalo. He enjoyed music and theater, was an avid sailor in his younger days and belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attending the Buffalo Ward. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harlan and Fredrick Graham and Gip Hudson. Survivors include a son, Bruce of Clearmont; a daughter, Morgan Grow of Salt Lake City; and five grandchildren. Memorial services for Lilian Josephine Rubidge, 76, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Mrs. Rubidge died Monday, March 13, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. She was born March 7, 1930, in Liverpool, England, to James and Josephine (Sullivan) Lucas. She married Leslie Rubidge on May 8, 1948, in London. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Rubidge was a cosmetologist and owned Lilian's of London Styling Salon for many years. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, sewing and her animals. She was a history buff, and the History Channel was a favorite. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael; an infant daughter, Pamela; and a brother, Charles Lucas. Virgil Eldred Horsley

Former Dayton resident Virgil Eldred Horsley, 95, of Longview, Wash., died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Longview. Memorial services were Jan. 11 at Castle Rock (Wash.) Christian Church with burial in Sheridan. Arrangements were with Hubbard Funeral Home of Castle Rock. Mr. Horsley was born April 20, 1910, in Marshall, Ill., to John and Nora Horsley. The family homesteaded in Montana in 1919. Mr. Horsley went to work for John B. Kendrick's OW Ranch near Decker, Mont., in 1927. He married Ruth Reavis in 1929. The family moved to Delameter Valley near Castle Rock in 1937 and began a logging and road construction business which is still in operation as 3X Bar Inc. The Horsleys moved to Dayton in 1994. Mrs. Horsley died in 2004, and Mr. Horsley returned to Washington to be with his family. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Celeste; five brothers; one sister; a grandson; and a great-grandson. Survivors include two sons, Gary and Tom.

Dr. Lee, an optometrist, was born Nov. 20, 1956, in Lake Preston, S.D., to Don and Norma (Kroon) Loe. The family later moved to Sheridan and he graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Lynn Weber on June 27, 1981, in Sheridan. They moved to Casper in 1983. He coached youth in many sports, worked at Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, and led optometric mission trips to other countries. He played city league baseball. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Chris and Cameron; his parents; and a brother, Kim. Charles Randall `Randy' Kinskey

Former Sheridan resident Charles Randall “Randy” Kinskey, 54, died Sunday, March 5, 2006, at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., after a three-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Survivors include Sheridan Mayor Dave Kinskey, his brother. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. March 17 at St. Patrick's Church in Casper with the Rev. August Keoune officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Mr. Kinskey was born Feb. 2, 1952, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Jeanne and Rod Kinskey. The family moved to Sheridan when he was a child. He was a 1970 graduate of Sheridan High School, a National Merit Scholar, and played quarterback for the SHS Broncs. While attending high school, he worked part time in the family business, Jersey Creamery Inc. He attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, where he continued to play football, winning honors as a blocking back for the CC Tigers. After college, Mr. Kinskey worked for the family business, Mini Mart Inc., and is credited with a key role in expanding the business from 10 to 116 stores in six states. After the sale of Mini Mart Inc., he consulted independently as a computer programmer and system designer. Before his illness became too debilitating, he managed J'NR Investment LLC in Phoenix. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sports and socializing with friends. Survivors include his parents of Casper and Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven other siblings, Robin Worman of Story, Patty Bachand of Helena, Mont., Amy Brinkerhoff of Missouri City, Texas, Joseph of Cedar Falls, Iowa, John of Overland Park, Kan., Mary Ridgeway of Casper, and James of Seattle.

Sheridan native Fred Floyd Jr., 73, of Campbell County died Friday, March 3, 2006, in Buffalo after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette with the Rev. Marty Crump of The Family Life Church officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Mr. Floyd was born May 2, 1932, in Sheridan to Fred L. Floyd and Doris Packard Floyd. He attend rural school and quit school in 1948 to return to ranching. He married Darlene Carson on April 19, 1954, in Rapid City. They were third-generation ranchers on Wildhorse Creek, 26 miles northwest of Gillette. Mr. Floyd was a leader for Western Range 4-H and assisted with the Campbell County Fair. He was on the Campbell County Fire Board and a volunteer rural fireman for more than 30 years. He enjoyed watching old Western movies and reading Western books. He enjoyed being with his family and hunting sheep and caribou in Canada and deer and sheep in Wyoming. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Survivors include his wife; three children, Rick of Gillette, Sherry Mackey of Story and Toni Wagoner of Alladin; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Marion Verna Miller, 75, of Cheyenne died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at United Medical Center-West after a brief illness with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ascension Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Everett officiating. Mrs. Miller was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Enderlin, N.D., to August and Agnes Geske. She had lived in Cheyenne since 1999. She graduated from the University of North Dakota with a major in music and a minor in English. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She married Robert Miller on Dec. 22, 1950, in Enderlin. She worked at the Crippled Children's Home in Jamestown, N.D., and was an English teacher in Casper and a librarian in Sheridan, where she also was worked with School District 2. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and of Lutheran churches in Jamestown, Casper and Sheridan. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, cooking, tennis, the outdoors and garage sales. She was an avid Wyoming Cowboys fan. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ralph Geske, and a granddaughter. Survivors include her husband; three children, Diane Bassham and Greg Miller, both of Cheyenne, and Jannelle Edwards of Lacey, Wash.; a sister, Helen Philipsen of Beulah, Colo.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She grew up and attended Hay Creek Country School. She was a 1947 graduate of Baker High School. She married Clifford Crawford on Oct. 5, 1946, in Miles City, Mont. She enjoyed growing flowers, embroidering, needlework, travel and baking for her family. She was preceded in death by a son, Gus; a daughter, Joan Hollar; two brothers, Clifford and Charles; and three sisters, Helen Patrick, Jean Goroski and Lois Jean Kinsey. Fon Elizabeth Taylor

Graveside services for Fon Elizabeth Taylor, 87, of Sheridan will be later in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Taylor died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. She was born July 5, 1918, in Hysham, Mont., to Kurt Fred and Elizabeth (Becker) Cook. The family moved to the Sheridan/Big Horn area when she was a child. Her father worked for the Wallop Ranch. He died when she was 7. Her mother married Adam Helzer, and the family moved to Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Taylor later moved to the Gillette area, where she graduated from high school. She received an elementary permit to teach school and taught at the Camblin Ranch, south of Gillette. She also was a substitute teacher in the Sheridan area. She married Tyrus Raymond Taylor on March 22, 1941. She was a member of the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Akcita Win and various Parent-Teacher Associations. She was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Central Wyoming Council of BSA for distinguished service to youth. In 1977, she was the first woman elected to the Central Wyoming Council. She enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains, sewing, gardening and collecting stamps. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980 and by a sister and a brother. Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Ketchum of Rio Ranch, N.M.; two sons, Kent and Mark, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Warren Gilbert

Former Story and Sheridan resident Warren Gilbert, 82, of Torrington died Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Torrington Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Harrison Bible Church in Harrison, Neb. with the Rev. Matt Parker officiating. Arrangements are with Colyer Funeral Home. Mr. Gilbert was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Redwing, Colo. to Paul and Minnie (Baehr) Gilbert. He grew up and was educated in Heurifano County. He was a 1945 graduate of Colorado A&M with a degree in civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific as a field artillery officer with the Seventh Infantry Division during World War II. He was released from active duty in 1946 after having served one year with the occupation troops in South Korea. He married Kathleen Eberspecher Hilderbrand in 1968 in Rawlings. He worked for the Department of Agriculture & Soil Conservation Service for 34 years and was project engineer on Cloud Peak, Willow Park, Kearney Lake and the original Cross Creek and Dull Knife reservoirs. He retired in 1979 and moved to Story, where he worked part time at the State Fish Hatchery and was water commissioner for the Story area. He also spent five summers as reservoir tender for Cloud Peak and Willow park reservoirs in the Big Horn Mountains. The family moved to Sheridan in 1999. Mr. Gilbert continued his work as water commissioner in Story. The family moved to Torrington in 2002. He was a member of the Story Lions Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, of Torrington; a daughter Karen Gilbert of Palmyra, Neb.; a son Mike of Kansas City, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Gerri DeCoteau-Bohm of Hermiston, Ore., and Jill Winter of Salt Lake City; a stepson, Todd Hilderbrand of Casper; a sister, Pat Freeman of Austin, Texas; a brother, Paul of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Staudinger died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center in Sheridan. He was born Nov. 6, 1933, to Dominic and Emma (Kubischta) Staudinger on the family farm in Dunn County, N.D. He grew up and attended schools in the Dickinson area. He was a milk-runner for Cloverdale Creameries. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1965. During his years of service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and China Service Medal. After his discharge, he moved to Sheridan and worked at Sheridan College. He enjoyed hiking and fishing. He was preceded in death by a sister and two infant brothers. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Ann Pelzel of Sacramento, Eleanor Bachmeier of Billings and Angie Huschka of Ellenburg, Wash. Amy M. Smee

Memorial services for Amy M. Smee, 86, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church UCC with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Smee died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Smee was born April 16, 1919, in Hershey, Neb., to Jacob Douglas Myers and Nettle May Lucinda Carbah Myers. When she was 10, the family moved by covered wagon from Guernsey to Buffalo. She married Jess Smee in Buffalo in December 1937. The couple moved to Dayton and were the first residents there to have a telephone — which was needed by Mr. Smee in his duties as chief of the Ground Observer Corps during World War II. Mrs. Smee helped start the school library and helped start a hot lunch program for the school in Dayton before the federal program began in 1948. She was a childcare provider in Sheridan for more than 16 years. She enjoyed spending time at the family's cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 60 years and served in all three branches of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, a brother and a granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Merilla Mae Aarstad of Libby, Mont., Frances “Fran” Smee Ford of Sheridan; a sister, Ruth M. Himebaugh of Taylor, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church UCC, 100 W. Averil Augusta DePue

Memorial services for Averil Augusta DePue, 95, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sheridan Manor Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. A private family inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangments are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. DePue was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Alliance, Neb., to David and Lida (Cox) Lewis. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 5. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1930. She attended nursing school in the old Sheridan Memorial Hospital, graduating from nurse's training in 1933. She began a career in nursing at the hospital. She married Roger DePue on Jan. 16, 1937, in Buffalo. She was a member of First Christian Church and the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed writing poetry, working crossword puzzles and collecting recipes. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Muller and Virginia Fiedor, both of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
