STORY Graveside services for Jeffrey H. Lee, 47, of Story will be 10 a.m. Friday in Mount Hope Cemetery, Big Horn, with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Lee died Saturday, May 26, in the hospital in Buffalo of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born Feb. 19, 1954, in Topeka, Kan., to Harold and Shirley (Bautz) Lee. He grew up and graduated from high school in Exeter, N.H., and attended the University of New Hampshire. He was a resident of Casper before moving to Story in 1999. He worked as an outfitter, owning and operating Wyoming Whitetail Hunts. He enjoyed skydiving and scuba diving when he was younger. He also enjoyed hunting and motorcycle riding. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry. Survivors include four sons, Sampson of Story, Nathan of Stratham, N.H., and Joshua and Jonah, both of Sheridan; his companion, Iris Hehn, and her children Jessica and Jereme; his parents of Eliot, Maine; two brothers, Gary and Darren of York, Maine; a sister, Holly Plourde of Eliot; and one grandson. Visitation for Mary Smith, 83, of Sheridan will be 2-5 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation will take place. There will be no services.

Mass for Walter A. Maasch, 64, of Sheridan will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Michel Mulloy officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Maasch died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. He was born Aug. 17, 1936, to Anna Bauer and Walter F. Maasch in Worden, Mont. He graduated from high school in Hysham, Mont. He entered the U.S. Army June 7, 1962, and served in the Vietnam War. He married Sharon Johnston (Cline) Feb. 22, 1980, in Sheridan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching baseball, football and basketball. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 7. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two daughters, Sheila Hardy of Whitefish, Mont., and Gwen Cote of Missoula, Mont.; a son, Walter Jade Maasch of Laramie; two stepdaughters, Careelane Cline and Cynthia Cline of Lees Summit, Mo.; three stepsons, Daniel Cline and Douglas Cline of Lees Summit and Donald Dean Cline of Casper; and three brothers, Alvin L. of Miles City, Mont., Duane O. of Holister, Calif., and Lyle M. of Hysham, Mont.. MILES CITY, Mont. Big Horn native Gertrude Ester May Graupner, 94, of Miles City, Mont., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care Unit in Miles City. Visitation is 1-4 p.m. today in Holy Rosary Health Center Chapel in Miles City. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus, Mont. Interment will be in the family lot in Valley View Cemetery in Broadus. Mrs. Graupner was born Aug. 24, 1906, in Big Horn to Nelson and Menerva (Stewart) Darlington. She attended schools on the Home Creek Divide. She married Don Burley. They homesteaded in Powder River County and lived there 35 years before moving to the Demmions Homestead on the Mizpah. Mr. Burley died, and she married Paul Graupner in 1959 in Phoenix. They farmed on the Mizpah until 1991, when they retired to Kingman, Ariz. They moved to Miles City in 1993. In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Graupner was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, a granddaughter and great-granddaughter. Survivors include her husband, Paul Graupner of Miles City; two daughters, Dorothy Baertsch of Sheridan and Gladys Strait of Miles City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to donors choice.
Former Sheridanite Cecelia Lela Wallmo died April 5, 2001, at her home in Gig Harbor, Wash. She was a 1958 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Ted Musgrave after graduation. They divorced. She married Charlie Wallmo. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, David Musgrave; and a brother and sister. Survivors include one son, John Thomas Musgrave of Gig Harbor; a daughter, Marianne Regnier of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters; and two brothers.
Frank M. Bury, 85, of Sheridan died Friday, May 25, 2001, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Graveside committal of cremains will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Father Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Bury was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Berkeley, W. Va., to George and Mary (Wolney) Bury. The family came to Wyoming when he was an infant, and he grew up and attended schools in Kleenburn. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps Camps on many projects in the Big Horn Mountains. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Armys 3rd Division. He made assault landings in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He returned to Sheridan after the war and married Grace Templeton. They were divorced. He worked as operator at the Acme Power Plant for 27 years, and worked seven years for the Wyoming Highway Department until he retired. He married Phyrne Ginger Barnes in 1964. They were married 34 years, until her death. Mr. Bury enjoyed cooking for friends and had a reputation as a great fisherman. He enjoyed his friends, camping, hunting and fishing in the mountains. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include two sons, Michael of Montana and Ronald of Lyman; a stepson, Roger Barnes of Pensacola, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Cynthia Barnes-Dennis of Sheridan; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. George Hawkey Sr., 83, of Sheridan died Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with Father John Norton officiating. Mr. Hawkey was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Sheridan County to Earl D. and Mary Alexander (Fowler) Hawkey. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees from April 1942 through December 1946. He spent most of his adult life as a trucking contractor, heavy-equipment hauler and in the electrical field. He worked for a Denver-based contract company nearly 20 years before retiring. After retiring, he returned to the same Sheridan address he occupied in 1927. He was a member of American Legion Post 2 in Casper. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and visiting with friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank; three sisters, Louise Roebling, Virginia Mueller and Ruth Herbert; and one grandson. Survivors include two sisters, George and Jim; a sister, Beth Lloyd; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Carol L. Carter, 64, of Sheridan died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Westview Health Care Center. Graveside services will be at a later date at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 24, 1936, to Dale and Katherine (Trebilcock) Ellsworth in Rapid City. She graduated from high school and later married Douglas Carter. She enjoyed art and selling Avon products. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Christina Rice; and her parents. Survivors include two sons, Chris Brackeen of Sheridan and Kenny Brackeen of Denver.
William A. Maasch, 64, of Sheridan died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Mulloy officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Beryl C. Woody Woodson, 89, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. He was father of Grant Woodson of Sheridan. Memorial services were 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial was in Morrison Township, Iowa, Cemetery. Mr. Woodson was born Dec. 14, 1911, to Clarence and Cora Roberts Woodson. He married Adelaide Shors Sept. 19, 1930. She died in 1977, and Mr. Woodson married Jayne Stevens Nov. 9, 1979. Other survivors include his wife; two other sons, Douglas Woodson of Naples, Fla., and Bruce Woodson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a stepson, Scott Stevens of San Francisco; two stepdaughters, Sherry Gotterup of Newport News, Va., and Lisa Nelson of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Berniece Pearce of Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. DAYTON William Robert Bill Morland, 72, of Dayton and Lindstrom, Minn., died Monday, May 21, 2001. Cremation has taken place, and interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Arrangements are with the Cremation Society of Minnesota. Mr. Morland was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Betty J., of Dayton and Lindstrom; children Leslie A. Carlson, Gail E. Morland, Robert W. and Richard D.; a sister, Laura Gale; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services for Timothy J. Neiger, 33, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Neiger died Monday, May 21, 2001, near Kirby, Mont. He was born Nov. 27, 1967, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Willard and Marilyn (Easterby) Neiger. He grew up in Aberdeen and later moved to Hulett, where he finished high school. He worked construction and logging jobs until starting his own logging business in 1989. He married Niki Claar May 26, 1989, and they moved to Sheridan in November 1990. He continued his logging business and was logging in Montana at the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycle riding and fishing with his father-in-law. Survivors include his wife and three children, Drake, Brionna and Derek, all of Sheridan; his mother of Aberdeen; two brothers, Mike and Paul, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and four sisters, Debbie Neiger of Fantana, Calif., Lauri Vitto of Hulett, Kristi Byh of Lincoln, Neb., and Stephani Ruud of Willmar, Minn. Lin Watson, 83, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Watson was born Dec. 25, 1917, in New York City. The family moved to New Jersey when she was an infant. She grew up and attended school there. She married Gary Toth in 1942 in Pennsylvania. They moved to Seattle during World War II, where she worked as a secretary at Fort Lewis. They returned to New Jersey after the war, and she worked as a medical secretary. Mr. Toth died in 1969. She married George Watson in 1970 on Long Island, N.Y. They moved to Sheridan in 1989. She was secretary of the Womens Club and a member of the Homemakers Club. She enjoyed gardening and her cats and dogs. Survivors include her husband. Memorials may benefit the Dog and Cat Shelter, 325 Fort Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Klenneth Ray J.R. Brunson Jr., 22, of Sheridan died suddenly at his residence Monday, May 21, 2001. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday and 8-8:30 a.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel with the Rev. Kent Bahruth officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with graveside services following. Mr. Brunson was born June 20, 1978, in Dallas to Klenneth and Donna Elsom Brunson. The family moved to Buffalo when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1998 and moved to Gillette, then to Sheridan, where he had been living and working the past two years. He was active in the Four Square Church in Sheridan, a competitor in Special Olympics for many years and loved to dance. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Carlisle Arno of Buffalo; his father of Damon, Texas; two sisters, Christa Brunson Seger of Billings and Kyann Arno of Buffalo; a brother, Dakota Arno of Buffalo; maternal grandparents Don and Dorothy Elsom of Buffalo; paternal grandmother, Mary Lou Brunson of Wills Point, Texas; and step-grandparents Jim and Shirley Arno of Buffalo. GREYBULL Patricia Elizabeth Hamilton, 80,
of Greybull died Monday, May 21, 2001, at the South Big Horn
County Critical Access Hospital between Greybull and Basin.
She was mother of Patrick Hamilton of Sheridan. Visitation will
be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday at the Atwood Family Chapel in
Greybull. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St.
Andrews Episcopal Church in Basin with Father Ron Lytle
officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Greybull.
Mrs. Hamilton was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Basin to Patrick Henry
and Mildred Ethelyn (Gregory) Coll. She graduated from Basin High
School and was educated as a teacher at Rocky Mountain College in
Billings and the University of Wyoming. She married Francis L.
Hamie Hamilton May 29, 1941, in Evanston. She taught
schools in Otto, Greybull and from 1957 to 1987 in Basin. After
retiring, she continued teaching adults to read. She was preceded
in death by a great-grandson. Survivors in addition to her son
include her husband of Greybull; two daughters, Diane Hamilton of
Littleton, Colo., and Darlene Hopkin of Goldonna, La.; a sister,
Maxine Kopyscinski of Vista, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren. A memorial fund has been established
at First Interstate Bank in Greybull to benefit the Big Horn
County Library there.

He was born Dec. 18, 1939, in Pittsfield, Mass., to William M. and Dorothy Mae (Currier) Phelan. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1957. He married Doreen E. Scanlon June 10, 1967, in Pittsfield. The family moved to Sheridan in 1980. He was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, dart ball league and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed black-powder shooting, fishing and being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Lund and Lois Hopper. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; three children, Rhonda M. Kerr of Monroe, Wash., Lois E. Phelan of Gillette and Jon Winslow of Whitinsville, Mass.; and four grandchildren. Patsy J. Kaufmann, 68, of Sheridan died Friday, May 18, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kaufmann was born Aug. 12, 1932, in Sheridan to George and Gladys (Hann) Ostrom. She graduated from high school in Big Horn and worked as a bookkeeper at First National Bank in Sheridan until she married Robert Kaufmann Oct. 10, 1953, in Sheridan. They ranched on Piney Creek. Mrs. Kaufmann worked with her husband and was involved with her children in Rodeo Club, 4-H and FFA. She moved to Sheridan in the early 1980s. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and teaching them to fish. She also enjoyed gardening, yard work, playing poker and slot machines, fishing and camping and her dog, Lilly, and cat, Sam. Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Camino of Clearmont and Carol Keeline of Sheridan; a brother, George Ostrom Jr. of Sheridan; a sister, Mary Lou Robbins of Possette, Mass.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
George Kimble, 86, of Sheridan died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing and visitation are 6:30-8 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. Mr. Kimble was born Dec. 23, 1914, on the old George Bethurem Ranch in the Prairie Dog Creek area to Charles and Flavel (Bethurem) Kimble. He was raised on a homestead near Otter, Mont. He graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Leola Stewart May 21, 1938, in Sheridan. They moved to San Francisco during World War II, and he worked for a defense contractor. They returned to Sheridan after the war. Mr. Kimble was a carpenter and did work in Sheridan Colleges Golden Dome. He enjoyed camping in the mountains with his family, woodworking in his shop and riding in the country. He was a member of the SOS support group. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991 and by one sister, Bea Thomas. Survivors include two sons, Stewart of Harbor City, Calif., and Tom of Summerville, S.C.; five daughters, Jean Epley of Scottsdale, Ariz., Beth Kimble-Powers of Yorba Linda, Calif., Ann Slaybaugh and Laura Ackermann, both of Sheridan, and Mary Jo Kimble of Milo, Maine; one brother, David of Buffalo; two sisters, Florence Berry of Reno, Nev., and Juanita Hornback of Sequim, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
RANCHESTER Deborah T. Weimer, 47, of Ranchester died Wednesday, May 16, 2001. Services will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Weimer was born March 25, 1954, to Benjamin and Kay (Wahl) Hawkins in Culver City, Calif. She married Dannie J. Weimer Feb. 28, 1982, in Stone Lagoon, Calif. They moved to Sheridan last year. Mrs. Weimer enjoyed arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Brian DeBortoli, Daniel Weimer and Christopher Weimer; a daughter, Sarah Medenwaldt; two sisters, Sharon Hawkins and Gorgette Abeyta; her father; and four grandchildren.
BUFFALO Sheridan County native Cecelia Cec Oneyear, 71, died Sunday, May 20, 2001. Private family services will be at a later date. Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Oneyear was born Nov. 24, 1929, in Arvada to Charles and Augusta Severance. She grew up in Arvada and Atwood, Calif., and graduated from Atwood High School. She moved to Sheridan after high school and worked as a store clerk. She married Kenneth Anderson in Sheridan, and they made their home here. In 1966 she married Dean Oneyear, and they moved to Portland, Ore. Mr. Oneyear died in 1984. Mrs. Oneyear moved to Buffalo last spring. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Jesse Severance. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Anderson of Buffalo; and two sisters, Mary Leath of Buffalo and Agnes Turner of Fort Wayne, Ind. The family is accepting donations in care of Adams Funeral Home to help defray expenses.
TORRINGTON Lillie Mae Mullock, 91, of Torrington died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Torrington Community Hospital. She was mother of Karen Townsend of Sheridan. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Valley View Cemetery in Torrington with the Rev. Peggy Brown officiating. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Colyer Funeral Home. Mrs. Mullock was born Feb. 3, 1910, in Grant City, Mo., to William and Lavina (Harris) Black. She married Clark Mullock Feb. 22, 1930, in Missouri. They moved to the Yoder area in 1931 and farmed until 1983, when they retired and moved to Torrington. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Kay Coen; a son, Larry; a sister, Vesta Gearhart; seven brothers, Wilbur, Harvey, Lemuel, Clifford, Joe, William and Troy; and a grandchild. Besides her daughter, survivors include her husband and two sons, Jerald and Harold, all of Torrington; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Special Touch program at the Torrington Community Hospital.
James W. Phelan, 61, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 16, 2001. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating.
Albert Austin, 96, died May 17, 2001, in Loveland, Colo. Mr. Austin was born and spent his early childhood in Buffalo. He spent part if his life in Casper, Wheatland, Lusk and Laramie. Funeral services are Sunday, May 20, at 4 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Wheatland. Burial will be in the Kaycee Cemetery Monday, May 21, at 2 p.m.

MILES CITY, Mont. Former Sheridan resident
Erlys Janine Swanson Bartels, 76, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at
the Holy Rosary Extended Care Facility in Miles City.
Funeral services were Monday in the Grace Bible Church in Miles
City. Interment was in the Custer County Cemetery. Mrs. Bartels
was born May 16, 1924, in Minneapolis to Fred and Edna Hanson
Swanson. She was a 1940 graduate of Sheridan High School and
worked in Sheridan after graduation. She later moved to Ashland,
Mont. She married Roy J. McKelvey Feb. 2, 1944, in Ashland. They
divorced. She worked at several jobs in Miles City, including
deputy county clerk. She was elected clerk of court in 1977 and
held the position 21 years. She married Alvin Abe
Bartels May 3, 1975. He preceded her in death. She was also
preceded in death by a son, James. Survivors include four

CLEARMONT William Dean Floate, 75, of Clearmont died Monday, May 14, 2001, at the Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Wednesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo, followed by graveside services. Mr. Floate was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Sheridan to Edwin and Amelia Floate. He attended elementary school at Crazy Woman, east of Buffalo, and was a 1943 graduate of Clearmont High School. He remained on the family homestead after school and worked the ranch with his parents. He worked and lived on the family ranch until his death. He was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge. He enjoyed ranching and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Edwin Floate Jr. Survivors include five nephews, Chuck Floate of Clearmont, Dennis Floate of Sheridan, Alex Floate of Boise, Idaho, Ed Floate of Selma, Ore., and Darrell Floate of Mesa, Ariz.; a niece, Claudia Hall of Sheridan; and several cousins. DAYTON Memorial services for Theodore T. Tyson, 71, of Dayton will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Worship Center with Pastor Scott Lee officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Tyson died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Orlando, Fla., to John and Katherine Tyson. He grew up in Florida, where he graduated from high school in Fort Lauderdale. After graduating from college, he served in the U.S. Army. He was vice president of Florida Home Fund in Coral Gables, Fla., until 1969. He moved to North Carolina and owned and operated a convenience store. He married Jean Durette Dec. 23, 1975, in Las Vegas. They moved to Dayton in 1986, and he worked at Spring Creek Coal until 1994, when he retired. He enjoyed reading, especially spiritual books, and being with his family. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia. Survivors include his wife of Dayton and four sons, Thad and Gerald of Sheridan and Alex and Teddy of Dayton.
Former Sheridan resident Alex Loeber died Feb. 16, 2001, in Escondido, Calif. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Funeral services for Barbara S. Gibson, 82, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Gibson died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at her home. She was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Carmyle Glasgow, Scotland, to John and Mary (Buchanan) Moffat. She grew up and graduated from high school in Scotland and worked at Chamber Engineering before moving to Canada in 1951. She married Edward Gibson Sept. 1, 1951, in Toronto. They moved to Sheridan in 1953 and worked for Mrs. Gibsons aunt at the Wyoming Chicken Hatchery. After working at various jobs, she was employed at J.M. McDonalds Department Store until 1980, when she retired and helped raise her grandchildren. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Womens Circle #5. She enjoyed people, animals and visiting with friends and family on the phone. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982 and by two sisters, Mary Gray and Jessie Haining, and two brothers, John and Robert Moffat. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret and Jean Gibson, both of Sheridan; a sister, Janet Moffat of Sheridan; and three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Sheridan Senior Center.
Memorial services are planned in July for Glenn D. Sweem, 82, of Sheridan. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Sweem died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born July 7, 1918, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Oscar and Daisy (Ventling) Sweem. The family moved to Sheridan in 1935, and Mr. Sweem graduated from Sheridan High School in 1938. He attended college at Greeley, Colo. He married Jean McKenzie April 11, 1942, in Denver. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He became group bombardier on a B-17, and as a first lieutenant completed 51 missions over Europe while based in Africa and Italy. He worked as a conductor for Burlington Northern Railroad more than 40 years. He was active in the Democratic Party, serving as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1974 and a member of Wyomings Electoral College in 1976. He was vice president of the AFL-CIO, served as state director of the United Transportation Union and was that organizations legislative representative and lobbyist in Cheyenne for many years. He was past president of the local and state historical and archeological societies and worked on many committees through the years. He contributed knowledge and research to many historical books, articles and projects, one of the most recent being the Bozeman Trail Adventure at the request of Sheridans YMCA. He served on the Bicentennial Committee from 1975-77. He was a longtime member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge. Survivors include his wife of Laramie; two sons, Glenn Jr. of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Craig of Sheridan; a daughter, Barbara Jean Barbour of Laramie; two sisters, Esther Kuchera of Sheridan and Lois of Arizona; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Wilfred A. Butch Schatz, 78, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at his home in New England. He was father of Suzie Schatz-Benson of Sheridan. A Masonic service is 7 p.m. today. Mr. Schatz was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Burnstad, N.D., to Fred and Elizabeth (Harth) Schatz. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in D-Day at Normandy and the invasions of Belgium and Holland. He was with the troops that crossed the Rhine and entered Berlin, and he received several citations for valor. He married Lou Ann Madsen Dec. 28, 1950. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Donald. In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife; a son, Mike, of New England; and five grandchildren.
Sheridan-native Robert Smith, 72, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Casper. A memorial service will be this summer in the Big Horn Mountains. Mr. Smith was born Jan. 4, 1929, to Gary and Ruth (Swinyer) Smith in Sheridan. He attended Sheridan schools and graduated in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation and was stationed with the 714 Intelligence Unit in Germany as a map compiler, and for a time in Paris at Gen. Eisenhowers headquarters Map Depot, which was part of NATO. He married Catherine Bodenhamer Jan. 2, 1952, in Worland. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in June 1958 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering with a minor in math. Mr. Smith worked for Texaco for 24 years, and was transferred from Casper to Lockport, Ill., in 1963. He retired from Texaco in 1984. He was a past master of Pathfinder Lodge #42 A.F. & A.M.; past worthy patron of Fort Casper Chapter #4 and past associate guardian of Jobs Daughters Bethels #41 and #9. He loved camping, fishing and hunting in the Big Horns. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Gail J. Hughes, of Lacy, Wash.; sons Gary R. Smith of Renton, Wash., and James R. She grew up and attended schools in Cincinnati. She married William E. Stouffer Dec. 24, 1927, in Cincinnati. They lived in Berea, Ohio, and Galesburg, Ill., until 1958, when they moved to Sheridan. She was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1958 and by a brother, Dirk Wilmink. Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Stanford University Hospital.
Private family services will be held. Mrs. Henkens was born Oct.
22, 1918, in Ryanell, W.Va. She worked on ranches in Wyoming in
the 1950s. She owned a beauty shop in the 1960s and a secondhand
shop in the 1970s in Sheridan. She moved to California in 1980
and worked as a caregiver in Carmel Valley for many years.
Survivors include a son, Herschel Jones of Seaside, Calif.; five
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one

She grew up on a ranch and graduated from high school in Gillette. She married Harold Slim Sherard June 23, 1940, in Gillette. They traveled to construction jobs in Wyoming and Montana until 1969 when they settled in Sheridan. She was a member of the VFW and Eagles auxiliaries, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and bingo. She loved her dog, Buddy. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1985, and one son, Sonny. Survivors include four sons, Clayton of Roundup, Jake of Gillette and John and George, both of Sheridan; a daughter, Nila Yoctorwic of Gillette; a brother, Charles Harris of Forsythe, Mont.; a sister, Norma Striet of Guiderock, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Murry J. Brown, 84, of Lodge Grass, Mont., died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. The family moved to the top of the Wolf Mountains, then relocated in 1926 to Owl Creek. He was a longtime rancher in the Lodge Grass and Wyola, Mont., areas and did business in Sheridan. He was on the board of directors of First Interstate Bank of Hardin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Francis, and an infant daughter. Mr. Mitchell died Monday, April 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. He was born Dec. 24, 1947, in Shawnee, Okla., to William and Nettie Mae (Lowry) Mitchell. He grew up and attended school in Oklahoma. He worked on offshore oil rigs until he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Vietnam War. He returned to Oklahoma after service and worked at various jobs before being employed by United Fom Co. in Shawnee. He married Clar Soergel Oct. 4, 1976, in Shawnee. He worked for Mobil Chemical until 1991 when he retired. He participated in the 1995 Rainbow 5 Native American Walk for Mother Earth. He and his wife lived in Arizona and Colorado before moving to Sheridan in 1999. He worked for Holly Hybrid Seed here. He enjoyed his dogs and working on cars. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Sean. Memorial services for Dr. Robert C. Bergstrom, 79, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, in the Chapel at the Sheridan VA Medical Center with the Rev. Arden Haeffner officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Dr. Bergstrom died Sunday in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born March 23, 1922, in Newcastle to Floyd and Katherine (Stewart) Bergstrom. He was raised on a ranch at Clareton and graduated from Newcastle High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and in the Navy Reserve following active duty. He married Patsy Jean Taylor June 30, 1948. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1950 from Colorado State University and taught high school in Newcastle and Billings. He served as a ranger in Yellowstone National Park during the summers. He received his masters degree in 1956 and taught and coached wrestling at Worland High School. He became a member of the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture faculty in 1962 and taught in the microbiology and veterinary medicine departments. He worked on research projects for the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab and the University Research Center in Teton National Park. He received the John W. Scott Memorial Award as outstanding graduate student May 20, 1962. He earned his doctorate degree in 1964 and received the Distinguished American Scientist Award in 1970. He was a member of honorary fraternities Gamma Sigma Delta, Society of Sigma Xi, Beta Beta Beta, Alpha Zeta and Chi Gamma Iota. He taught and did research in parasitology until he retired in 1987. He continued research with University Extension offices statewide after retirement. He moved to Sheridan in 1994. He enjoyed music, hunting, fishing, tennis and roller skating. He was a National Ski Patrolman for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Terri Linn; and sisters Katherine Bergstrom and Betty Darlington. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; two sons, Arthur of Banner and Timothy of Mesa, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Schmitz, 67, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at her home in Bozeman,
Mont.
Memorial Mass was Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in

Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. Mrs. Schmitz was born Dec. 15,
1933, in Sheridan to Anna Margaret and Howard Powell. She grew up
in Sheridan and married Bill Schmitz in 1950. They moved to
Billings in 1968 and to Bozeman in 1975. She was preceded in
death by a brother, Jed; and one grandson. Survivors include her
husband, Bill, of Bozeman; and four children, Peggy Knack of
Billings, Randy Schmitz of Billings, Jeri Herigstad of Anaconda,
Mont., and Bill Schmitz of Bozeman; and 11 grandchildren.

Former Sheridan resident Catherine M. Cathy Dykes, 53, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings. Mrs. Dykes was born June 22, 1947, in Gillette to Henry Hank and Helen (Smith) Hughes. She married Dennis Lee Dykes Aug. 9, 1965. They lived in various places in Utah, Wyoming and Montana. They were divorced in 1985. She returned to Gillette two and a half years ago after living for a time in Sheridan. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Jimmy, Hank and Gary Hughes. Survivors include two sons, James of Gillette and David of Great Falls, Mont.; a daughter, Sonya VanNortrick of North Pole, Alaska; two brothers, Cal and Roger Hughes, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Debra Hughes of Utah; and four grandchildren.

Bob Holstedt, 81, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Holstedt died Sunday, April 29, 2001, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1920, in Sheridan to John S. and Maud (Hennen) Holstedt. He was a 1937 graduate of Sheridan High School and attended the University of Wyoming from 1938 to 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps as an aviation cadet, graduating July 3, 1942, as a pilot and second lieutenant. He married Mary Emily Mothershead of Cheyenne Aug. 1, 1942, in Shreveport, La. He served with the 34th Bomb Squadron, 17th Bomb Group, flying a B-26 medium bomber in the North African Campaign during World War II. He was wounded in his fifth mission and returned to the United States. He returned to active duty as a pilot for the last year of the war. He returned to the University of Wyoming Law School after the service, graduated and was admitted to the Wyoming State Bar in 1949. He practiced as an attorney in Sheridan until 1995, when he retired. He was a member of the Sheridan County Bar Association, American Bar Association, a 50-year member of the State Bar Association and a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church. He was a member and past president of the Sheridan Jaycees and 1951 Jaycees Man of the Year. He was past president of the Sheridan Kiwanis, served on the Whitney Benefits Board of Directors and was a member of Masonic Lodge #8, Consistory, Kalif Shrine, the Shrine Brass Band and a past potentate of the Shrine. He was a member of Elks Lodge #520, the American Legion and the Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a former member of the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, Sheridans city planning committee and the rodeo committee. He also served as a police judge, municipal judge and county and prosecuting attorney for Sheridan County. He served two terms in the Wyoming Legislature, cosponsoring legislation in 1951 that established the community college system in Wyoming. He served 18 years on the Wyoming Community College Commission and was attorney for Sheridan College from 1951-95. He was a member and past president of the Sheridan College Foundation. He received an honorary associate of arts degree from Sheridan College in 1996. He was preceded in death by a brother, John H., and a sister, Uree Marie Richter. Sheridan native James LeRoy Calkins, 88, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in Homer, Alaska. Memorial services will be in Homer. Mr. Calkins was born Dec. 31, 1912, in Sheridan to LeRoy and Mildred (Nietman) Calkins. He had lived in Homer since 1950. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred, and two sisters, Laura Pelesky and Claire York, all of Sheridan. Survivors include his wife, Barbara, and son, Clifford, both of Homer; a daughter, Barbara Miller of Ash Fork, Ariz.; a sister, Henrietta Hank Songer of Sheridan; and two grandchildren, a niece and two nephews, all of the Sheridan area.
Graveside services for Ruth Phillips, 94, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Phillips died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. She was born Aug. 11, 1906, in Sheridan to Andrew and Beulah (Townsend) Hammontree. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She married Herbert Case Phillips April 27, 1926, in Roundup, Mont. They ranched near Sonnette, Mont., until 1951 when they moved to Hamilton, Mont. They returned to Sonnette in 1954. Mr. Phillips died in 1970, and Mrs. Phillips moved to Sheridan to be near her daughter. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, gardening, crossword puzzles, games, puzzles and animals. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Alvin; a brother, Ray Hammontree; and a sister, Evelyn Norton. Survivors include a son, Carl of Sonnette; a daughter, Audrey Norwood of Sheridan; a sister, Dorothy Smith of Iowa; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
Dr. Robert C. Bergstrom, 79, of Sheridan died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sheridan VA Medical Center Chapel. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Mark James Morrow, 45, of Sheridan will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Fort Harrison National Cemetery in Helena, Mont. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Morrow died Thursday, April 26, 2001. He was born Oct. 20, 1955, in Billings to Phillip R. and Deanna (Petty) Morrow. He graduated from Billings West High School in 1974 and attended Billings Vocational Technical Center. Mr. Morrow enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974 and was honorably discharged two years later. He earned a brown belt in karate in 1978. He served as a volunteer firefighter and as a volunteer for the Animal Shelter in Sheridan. Survivors include his father of Arizona; his mother of Townsend, Mont.; a brother, Greg P. of Billings; three sisters, Debra Lee Olson of Billings, Cynthia Case of Mesa, Ariz., and DeLayna Seavy of Norris, Mont.; nine nieces and nephews; and one grandniece. Funeral services for James E. Hardesty, 70, of Wyarno will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Cremation will follow the service. A reception at Elks Lodge #520 in Sheridan will follow the service. Viewing is until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Hardesty died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at his ranch home on Dutch Creek. He was born April 26, 1931, in Sheridan to Olin and Martha (Barker) Hardesty. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He worked on area ranches as a young man. He married Katherine Suel May 4, 1952, in Sheridan. He worked 30 years in construction for various companies mostly Peter Kiewit Sons then took up ranching on Dutch Creek in 1969. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed chariot racing, hunting, fishing, reading, horses and black cows. He was preceded in death by a brother, John. Survivors include his wife of Wyarno; two sons, James T. of Wyarno and Michael O. of Livingston, Mont.; two brothers, Jan of Billings and Joel of Winnemucca, Nev.; and five grandchildren. HARDIN, Mont. Sheridan County native Mildred Hamilton, 92, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Heritage Acres Nursing Home in Hardin. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the Lodge Grass Little Brown Church. Interment will be in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. Mrs. Hamilton was born Oct. 13, 1908, on Dutch Creek to Joshua and Mary Leitner Buckingham. The family moved to the Lodge Grass area when she was 2 years old. She grew up in Lodge Grass. She married Otto G. Hamilton July 18, 1928, in Hardin. He died in 1967. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Edel Boggess, Harlow Buckingham, Lila Buckingham, Ellen Westbrook, Lee Buckingham and Mabel Hartman; and by a grandson. Survivors include a son, Harley of Stephensville; a brother, Calvin Buckingham Sr. of Hardin; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lodge Grass Little Brown Church.
BILLINGS Former Sheridan resident William V. Bill Schneider, 88, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Billings Deaconess Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Smith Downtown Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Moutview Cemetery with military rites. Mr. Schneider was born Dec. 10, 1912, in Great Falls. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and later operated businesses in Great Falls and Lewiston. He spent his later years in Sheridan before retiring to Billings. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Oedekoven Schneider; a brother, Sherman; and a sister, Madeline. Survivors include a son, Jim Schneider of Westminster, Colo.; three daughters, Joan Wojtala of Great Falls, Barbara Smith of Manassas, Va., and Beverly Mundschenk of Billings; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
