Josephine Garriott

Former longtime Sheridan resident Josephine Garriott, 71, of Gillette died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette. Christian wake services will be 7 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Kadera officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born May 1, 1934, in Sheridan to Tony and Nellie (Morrissey) Leo, she worked at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center as an office clerk for 25 years. She moved to Gillette a year ago to be close to her daughters. She enjoyed travel, especially to Deadwood, S.D., being with her cat, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John Mates; a sister, Betty Newlon; and a brother, Tom Leo. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Williamsen and Nancy Perry, both of Gillette; a brother, James Leo of Sheridan; two sisters, Eileen Adams of Gillette and Kathleen Legerski of Casper; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association for research in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

BUFFALO — Albert “Stewart” Cellers, 76, of Kaycee died Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Monday in Adams Funeral Chapel in Buffalo and from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kaycee Methodist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kaycee Methodist Church with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Burial will be in Kaycee Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Stephanie Sidletsky

Stephanie Sidletsky, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, May 20, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. At her request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be later. Cremains will be buried in Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, Calif. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Sidletsky was born Jan. 31, 1921, in Carteret, N.J., to Theodore and Anastasia (Starynka) Chudova. She grew up and attended schools in Newark, N.J., and graduated from Newark High School. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She married Joseph Sidletsky in New Jersey. He preceded her in death. A member of the Catholic Church, she enjoyed spending time with her family, watercolor painting and going to the mall in Billings. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include three sons, Tom and Allan, both of Sheridan, and Mark of San Carlos, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

 

Irene Burgess

Irene Burgess, 93, of Sheridan died Monday, May 23, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place at her request. Private graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Burgess was born June 14, 1911, in Hurdsfield, N.D., to Quincy and Sophia (Frick) Tulp. She moved to Ranchester when she was a child. She married George Burgess in Hardin, Mont., in 1927. The couple lived in several towns in the Gillette area before settling in Parkman. Mrs. Burgess moved to Sheridan in 1972 after her husband died. She moved to Casper in 2002 to live with a granddaughter, but she returned to Sheridan in January. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially elk hunting, and was the camp cook. On her last hunting trip, at the age of 85, she bagged a deer. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary and member and past president of Eagles 186. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John; two brothers, Herman and Ray Tulp; three sisters, Neta Burgess, Phoebe Fackenthall and Helen Weibusch; and an infant great-great-grandson. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Shafer of Sheridan; an adopted daughter, Brenda Desmond of Sheridan; two sisters, Patricia Hubbard of Sheridan and Minnie Swearingin of St. Helena, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Ollie Mary Kane

Ollie Mary Kane, 94, of Gillette died Sunday, May 15, 2005, in Gillette. She was mother of Joy Sorenson of Arvada. Funeral services were last week. Mrs. Kane was born June 11, 1910, in Gillette to William Robert Wright and Ollie Mae (Marquiss) Wright. She grew up in Gillette and was a 1928 graduate of Campbell County High School. After graduating she taught at the Taylor Ranch in southwest Campbell County. She married Frank Kane on Jan. 10, 1943, in Denver. The couple ranched south of Gillette until 1955. She was a 4-H leader for many years, served on the Campbell County school board and Campbell County cemetery board, and belonged to Campbell County Cattlewomen, Wyoming Stock Growers and Campbell County Chamber of Commerce. She served on the Gillette City Council, was a director of Stockmans Bank, a member of the National Association of Bank Women, American Association of Retired Persons, Business & Professional Women, Retired Teachers Association, Daughters of the Nile and First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed world travel. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Spielman; a brother, Robert Earl Wright; and two daughters, Mary Zoe Allee and Karan Lea McCuley. Survivors include two sons, Frank Kane of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Don Waldrop of Gillette; three other daughters, Myra Addison and Rachael Fulkerson, both of Gillette, and Kathleen Reynolds of Rozet; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A memorial has been established in Mrs. Kane's name to benefit the Campbell County Cattlewomen's efforts in ag education. Annie Lee `Tinsy' Phillips Brotherton

Annie Lee “Tinsy” Phillips Brotherton, 84, of Blevins, Ark., died Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas. She was mother of Robert H. Brotherton of Sheridan and also the Sundowner Lions Club Pig Roast Mascot here for several years. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott, Ark., with burial in Marlbrook Cemetery, Blevins. Mrs. Brotherton was born April 2, 1921, in Hempstead County, Ark., to Claud A. and Gladys Vaughn Phillips. She graduated in 1940 from Little Rock (Ark.) Beauty School with a degree in cosmetology. She received an associate's degree in business from Red River Vocational Technical School in Hope, Ark., and worked for the Blevins Public School System for 19 years until retirement. She was a treasurer of the Prescott VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Marlbrook Cemetery Association and Blevins High School Reunion Committee. She enjoyed playing bingo, baking, gardening and decorating. She was preceded in death by her husband, George “Hap” Brotherton, in 1963; and by a sister, Thelma Warnken. In addition to her son, survivors include a daughter, Gladys Ann Turner of Blevins; a brother, R.D. “Son” Phillips of Blevins; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Kevin E. Anderson

Kevin E. Anderson, 45, of Sheridan died Friday, May 20, 2005, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Per his request, cremation has taken place, and cremains will be buried with his father. A graveside memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Anderson was born on Feb. 21, 1960, in Sheridan to Reinhald C. and Swanee (Kay) Anderson. Reinhald Anderson died in an auto accident when his son was 8 years old. Mr. Anderson was a foreman for U.S. Elevator in Denver and worked for the Denver Traffic Signal Co. He returned to Sheridan in 1991. He was a mechanic, carpenter, painter and carpet-layer. He enjoyed being with his sons, taking them fishing and camping. Survivors include his mother, Swanee Wilson, and stepfather, Dr. Robert Wilson, both of Sheridan; two sons, Jordan James and Quinn Cleveland, both of Sheridan; a brother, Reinhald “Randy” of Billings; and a sister, Kim Anderson Rae of Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Swanee Wilson to assist with funeral expenses and the education of Mr. Anderson's sons in care of Brenda Torrens and Nicole Christensen, Bank of the West, 2 N. Harry W. `Buster' Keeline III

Harry W. “Buster” Keeline III, 57, of Newcastle died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle. He was brother of Candy Hardesty of Wyarno. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Keeline was born May 4, 1948, in Laramie to Harry and Elaine (Smith) Keeline. He grew up on the Keeline Ranch at Newcastle. He was a 1967 graduate of Newcastle High School and attended Sheridan and Casper colleges and the University of Wyoming. He was a fourth-generation rancher. He enjoyed sports, including football and wrestling, and was an all-around cowboy in Wyoming high school rodeos. He was past president of the Wyoming and National High School Rodeo associations and a member of FFA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. In addition to his sister, survivors include a daughter, Kristen, and a son, Carson, both of Buffalo; and a brother, Jim of Newcastle. Donations may be made to a memorial established in Mr. Keeline's name to provide a high school rodeo scholarship for a boy or girl from Campbell or Weston County, in care of P.O. Box 51, Wyarno, WY 82845.

Maxine Sipe, 76, of Sheridan died Saturday, May 21, 2005, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. George Robinson Jr.

George C. Robinson Jr., 77, Sheridan, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, Pastor Don Derryberry officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Masonic 43 section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Aug. 22, 1927, in Sheridan to George C. and Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Robinson, he grew up and attended school here and served in the Navy in World War II. He returned to Sheridan and started work with Pleasant's Electric. He took over the business and continued it until retiring in August. He married Patricia Mitchell on April 2, 1959, in Sheridan. She died in 2001. Mr. Robinson belonged to Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43, Sheridan Scottish Rite Bodies, Kalif Shrine, and Big Horn Mountain Eagles Lodge 4169. He enjoyed auto racing, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and spending time with his family and cats. Survivors include three sons, Michael Robinson of Craig, Colo., Patrick Robinson of Palm Springs, Calif., and Barry Robinson of Billings; a daughter, Connie Robinson of Sheridan; a brother, Oren Robinson of Apache Junction, Colo.; a sister, Shirley Ellgaard of Orinda, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Michael R. Orr

Michael R. Orr, 56, of Sheridan died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at his residence. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Christ with the Rev. Bruce Black officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Orr was born July 9, 1948, in Turlock, Calif. He grew up on a farm raising almond and orchard trees. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He moved to Sheridan after the service and worked as a carpenter on the Ucross and Widener ranches as well as other places. He enjoyed working with his hands, drawing and carving, fishing, hunting and being outdoors. Survivors include a brother, Norman of Mountain View, Calif.; and a sister, Brenda of Watsonville, Calif.

Jack D. Maxted

Jack D. Maxted, 64, of Sheridan died Monday, May 16, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Maxted was born Dec. 24, 1940, in Sheridan to Wayne and Nora E. (Achenbach) Maxted. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-64. After service, he returned to Sheridan and was a truck driver for White Trucking, Tongue River Logging and Mullinax Construction. He was also involved in stock car racing until an accident in 1968 left him paralyzed from the neck down. He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed time on the computer. Survivors include a son, Jukie White of Baltimore; two daughters, Tammy Maxted and Teresa Percifield, both of Gillette; a brother, Pete of Sheridan; a sister, Barbara Townsend of Nevada City, Calif.; and one grandchild. Richard W. Reece

Richard Wayne Reece, 66, of Leiter died Monday, May 16, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Revs. Jay Reynolds and Donovan Olsen officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo. Mr. Reece was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Gillette to William and Merle Reece. He grew up on the family ranch 35 miles north of Gillette. His parents bought a second ranch northeast of Leiter in 1951. After the death of his parents, he operated the ranches with his sister, Dixie Reece of Leiter. He moved to Sheridan Manor in April after being diagnosed with cancer. Survivors include his sister and several cousins.

Irene `Jerry' Cooley

Former Sheridan resident Irene “Jerry” Cooley, 99, died Monday, May 9, 2005, in Buffalo. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be this summer in Story. Mrs. Cooley was born Aug. 7, 1905, in Waukegan, Ill., to C.G. Diecke and Minnie Meyer Diecke. Her parents and sister died when she was a teenager, and she moved to Cincinnati to live with an aunt while completing her education. Because of poor health, she came to the Nelson Guest Ranch in Sheridan. She married Chet Cooley in 1926. They were married for 52 years. They bought a ranch in Big Goose Canyon and later moved to Sheridan, where Mr. Cooley served as county assessor for 16 years. The family moved to the John Rice Wrench Ranch in 1950. The family had a summer home in Story. When Mr. Cooley died, Mrs. Cooley moved to Buffalo to be near family. She enjoyed flowers, hunting arrowheads, trips, animals and being with her children and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister; a son, Philip; and a great-grandson. Survivors include a daughter, Lynne Walker of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mervin Leroy “Chris” Christensen, 82, of Buffalo died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Myrtle Boyles, 94, of Sheridan died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Boyles was born Nov. 8, 1910, in Tilden, Neb., to Albert and Hattie (Edwards) Jackson. She married Frank W. Boyles on June 7, 1940. They moved to Martin, S.D. Mrs. Boyles moved to Sheridan in June 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband; a stepson, John; two sisters, Oney McClatchey and Elsie Zurcher; and two brothers, Harvey Jackson and Everett Jackson.Survivors include a son, Owen of Rapid City; a daughter, Mary Holwell of Sheridan; a stepson, Frank of California; one grandson; several step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lonny Elliott

Lonny Elliott, 60, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, in St. John's Hospital in Jackson. He was father of Mark Elliott of Sheridan. A celebration of Mr. Elliott's life will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Pinedale Cemetery. Mr. Elliott was born in Casper and graduated from Natrona County High School. He enlisted in the Navy. He later attended Casper College, then obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming. He was a real estate appraiser for more than 30 years. He served as president of the Wyoming Chapter of the Appraisal Institute and for two terms on the Wyoming Real Estate Appraiser Board. He enjoyed outdoor activities including hunting, horseback riding and off-roading on all-terrain vehicles. In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Carolyn, of Pinedale; a daughter, Cody of La Barge; his parents, Marshall and Marie; two sisters, Betty Wolfe of Casper and Lynn Schanck of Scottsbluff, Neb.; a brother, Bill, of Casper; and one granddaughter. Robert J. Davis

Robert J. Davis, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, May 13, 2005, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post 7. Mr. Davis was born Dec. 23, 1920, in White Bear Lake, Minn., to Raymond Warren and Lillian (Johnson) Davis. He graduated from White Bear Lake High School. He joined the Army on Sept. 17, 1942, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He was wounded in action in World War II. He was discharged from the Army on June 15, 1944, and returned to Minnesota, where he worked for Northern Pacific Railroad. He married Doris Elaine Jackson on Jan. 18, 1947, in Detroit Lakes, Minn. The railroad transferred him to Sheridan in 1981. He retired as assistant superintendent. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed playing golf. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, Barry of Hoyt, Kan., and Robert J. Jr. of Helena, Mont.; three brothers, Charles Wesley of Butte, Mont., Thomas Daniel of Montgomery, Texas, and Dr. William Wilson Davis of Eureka, Calif.; and one grandchild. Leslie Luciel King

Leslie Luciel King, 94, of Sheridan died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. King was born March 4, 1911, in Dechard, Tenn., to John and Grace (Walker) Christiansen. She married Eddie Lee King on July 29, 1929, in Erick, Okla. They move to Sheridan in 1935. Mrs. King enjoyed painting and silversmithing. She was a member of the Sheridan Gem and Mineral Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters and one grandson. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie West of Spotted Horse; a son, Francis of Bellevue, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Christina Connolly, 41, of Kalispell, Mont., died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at her residence. She was mother of Michelle Larson, daughter of Peggy Norman and sister of Jamie Lande, all of Sheridan. Mrs. Zeiser-Manley was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Cincinnati to Molly Hoops. She was raised by her grandparents, Etta and Edward Myers. She married James Zeiser in Cincinnati in 1934. Mr. Zeiser died, and Mrs. Zeiser married John “Jack” Manley on May 15, 1984, in Sheridan. She enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Alaska with Mr. Manley. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by Mr. Manley and a granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Dennis Zeiser of Ketchikan, Alaska; a daughter, Patricia Zeiser of Sheridan; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Former Sheridan County resident Cora Mildred Wilson, 97, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, in Mountain Shadows Adult Care Home in Tucson, Ariz. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Nancy Brooks officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services were Monday at First Baptist Church in Catalina, Ariz. Mrs. Wilson was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Gillette to Hamilton and Laura (Gird) Smith. She attended school in Arvada. She took secretarial courses at Keiman's Commercial College and attended beauty college in Sheridan. She married Caryl W. Wilson on Jan. 10, 1926, in Hardin, Mont. The couple ranched in Spotted Horse until 1940, when they moved to Gillette. They moved to Buffalo in 1945. Mrs. Wilson operated a florist business with a daughter, later moving the business to her home in Buffalo. Mr. Wilson died in 1990. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Daughters of the Nile, and Business and Professional Women and was a 50-year member of Golden Rod Chapter 13, Order of the Eastern Star. She also belonged to First Baptist Church of Catalina. She enjoyed walking, shopping and occasionally betting on horse races. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Don; four brothers, Leonard, Paul, Ray and Lee Smith; and three half brothers, Worth, Bill and Buster Lynde. Former longtime Sheridan resident Frances Hamilton, 82, of Gillette died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at Pioneer Manor of natural causes. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Nazarene Church in Sheridan with Pastor Arthur Maendl officiating. A private burial is planned at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Arrangements are with Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home of Gillette. Mrs. Hamilton was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Orange City, Iowa, to Frank and Henrietta (Koster) Mouw. She grew up on the family farm in Sheldon, Iowa, and attended Open Bible Institute. She moved to Sheridan in 1952 to work in a Christian book store. She lived here more than 50 years. She married Noel Hamilton on Oct. 23, 1953, in the Open Bible Church. She was a nurse's aide at Eventide Nursing Home (now Sheridan Manor) for many years. She moved to Gillette in 2003 to be closer to her family. She served on the Nazarene church board and church missions committee and was the church pianist. She was preceded in death by her husband and 13 brothers and sisters. Survivors include three sons, Fleet, Floyd and Flint, all of Gillette; a brother, Dick Mouw of Murrieta, Calif.; one sister, Minnie DenHartog of Jackson, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be at Fort Harrison, Mont. Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 20, 1913, in Sanders Township in Pennington County, Minn., to Albert and Tilda (Wiken) Sevre. She grew up and attended a country school in Pennington County. She married Patrick Michael Harris on June 6, 1935, in Crookston, Minn. She was a mother and homemaker most of her life. She worked as a cook's helper for the Benediction Sisters in Crookston before her marriage. She lived in Great Falls, Mont., for 63 years before moving to Sheridan. She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter and four brothers. Survivors include a son, Delbert P. of Albert Lea, Minn.; a daughter, Charlette C. Smith of Sheridan; two sisters, Doris Peterson of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Alice Hammer of Laurel, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Alvin G. Shreve, 74, of Sheridan died Monday, May 9, 2005, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Mr. Shreve was born June 10, 1930, in Sheridan to Ralph and Dessa Marie (Randall) Shreve. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After service, he returned to Sheridan and worked as an oiler/mechanic on road construction for Kiewit and Pelesky Construction. He worked for Big Horn Coal from 1973-90. He married Marjorie Norton in Sheridan in 1973. A member of United Mine Workers of America, he enjoyed camping, fishing, Yellowstone Park, working on cars, and his dogs. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold; three sisters, Jeannette, Merrilyn and Lois; and a son, Irvin. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mervin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Eugene of Del City, Okla.; three daughters, Leva Tomisich of Fort Myers, Fla., Teresa Todd of Blue Springs, Mo., and Karen Hiles of Independence, Mo.; a brother, Eugene Shreve Sr. of Sparks, Nev.; a sister, Margaret Dillon of Odessa, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Vincenzo `Jim' Mediate

Vincenzo “Jim” Mediate, 80, of Sheridan died Sunday, May 8, 2005, in Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. Christian wake service will be recited 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Mr. Mediate was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Kleenburn to Carmella (Garreffa) and Frank Mediate Sr. He was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. He joined the Army soon after graduating and served during World War II in the Pacific and Asian theaters until 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He received the American Theater of Operations Ribbon, Pacific Theater Services Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Agnes Silver on June 12, 1949, in Butte, Mont. Mr. Mediate managed the Bison Bar and XL Liquor and Lounge before buying the Mission Bar. He later bought the Bison Bar. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, the Elks Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Sheridan Liquor Dealers Association. He was a former competitor and judge in American Kennel Club Retriever Field Dog Trials and cashier for Knights of Columbus Monday night bingo. He enjoyed bird hunting and fishing with his son, gardening, and serving spaghetti and meatball dinners at the Elks Club. Survivors include his wife; a son, Anthony of Sheridan; a daughter, Vicki Auch of Morgantown, W.Va.; a brother, Frank Jr. of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pointer was born May 19, 1912, in Sheridan to Frank and Sadie Headley. She attended rural schools and was a 1931 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Leslie O. Pointer of Sheridan on Aug. 24, 1931, in Hardin, Mont. Mr. Pointer died in 1995. She was president of the Taylor School Parent-Teacher Association and member of a poetry club. She worked as a bookkeeper for Crandall Insurance Agency, Wiley Oil Co., Sheridan Stationery and Cashway Lumber and also as a special education aide with Edith Longwith. She belonged to Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sheridan and was involved in youth ministry. She and Mr. Pointer taught nature classes at Mills Spring Ranch, a youth facility on Casper Mountain. They later traveled throughout the United States. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Arlene of Pueblo, Colo.; a son, Larry of Billings; and seven grandchildren. Dorothy Ann Caldwell Kisling, 74, of Sheridan died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings, according to her family. A celebration of her life will be 4 p.m. May 21 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. A reception will follow at her residence. She was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Tulsa, Okla., to Clarence F. Caldwell and Sybella Diebold Caldwell. She attended Lindenwood College in St. Louis and graduated in 1952 from the University of Tulsa with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later earned a master's degree in liberal arts from Houston Baptist University. She was the first woman “hard-news” reporter at the Tulsa Daily World and was an archivist in rare books and manuscripts at the University of Virginia library. She worked in the publications department of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She retired in 1996 to Sheridan, where she was active with the Civic Theater Guild, the WYO Theater, Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library and the Trail End Historic Site. Survivors include two children, Deborah C. and Peter D. II, both of Jackson. She also baby-sat for churches during services. Her husband, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Les Oedekoven, Billings; two daughters, Charlotte Haney of Roseville, Calif., and Mariellen Oxley of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Former Sheridan resident Harley D. LaFever, 71, Alfalfa, Okla., died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. Services were April 19 at Eakly Methodist Church in Eakly, Okla., with burial in Eakly Cemetery. Arrangements were with Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home of Carnegie, Okla. Born Nov. 20, 1933, in Alfalfa to Henry Edward and Lena Mae (Stuteville) LaFever, he grew up there and served in the Air Force in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the military after 22 years. Mr. LaFever worked at Sheridan VA Medical Center and as a tractor mechanic. He belonged to Eakly American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hydro Hi-Steppers, American and Oklahoma Quarter Horse associations, and Wrangler Round-up. He was preceded in death by a son, Harley D. “Joe” LaFever II, a daughter, Barbara Jean, two brothers, Leon and Rayburn LaFever, and three sisters, Peggy Gonzalez, Rosetta Easter, and Hazel, an infant. Joel Evens Gates, 68, Story, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Billings Deaconess Hospital after a brief illness. A memorial service will take place this summer. Born July 17, 1936, in Boston to Martha Abigail (Evens) and Albert Leland Gates, he graduated from the Middlesex School in 1955, attended Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University), and served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany. He married Suzanne Trimble Snyder in 1960. Sylvia Roberts

Sylvia Roberts, 66, Sheridan, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Assembly of God Church, Pastor John Jackson officiating. Born Feb. 16, 1939, in Fredericksburg, Va., she married Oakey Roberts on March 30, 1963. Mrs. Roberts worked for Marion Day Care, Children's Center, YMCA Day Care, and I Can Day Care. She was an active member of Sunrise Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed knitting, spending time with children and their families, church activities, and friends. Her husband died in 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Melinda Roberts-Romsa of Cheyenne; and three grandchildren. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

 

Keith M. Mudd

Keith Merle Mudd, 71, Buffalo, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, in Buffalo. He previously worked as a service station attendant in Sheridan. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Su Debree officiating. Born March 31, 1934, in Rawlins to Raymond and Marlyss Stauss Mudd, he grew up in Rawlins and graduated from Rawlins high school in 1952. He worked for Collier Dairy in Rawlins and later for Wyoming Dairy. He married Barbara Cortem on Dec. 14, 1953, in Rawlins, and they made their home there. The couple divorced in 1967, and Mr. Mudd moved to Buffalo, where he was a trucker until 1975. He then worked as a service station attendant in Buffalo and Sheridan. He also worked at Buffalo Short Stop until his death. He received numerous bowling awards and enjoyed working with junior bowlers in Buffalo. He also liked to hunt and fish. He was godfather of Kristi Lynn Blakely of Gillette and close friend of Joy Mize of Buffalo. Two brothers preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Scott Mudd of Las Cruces, N.M., and John Mudd of Fort Lupton, Colo.; two sisters, Luella Sprague of Los Angeles and Lorretta Lauck of Wheatland; two brothers, Jim Mudd of Puscolaone, Texas, and Dick Mudd of Yuma, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit American Diabetes Research Foundation in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Gavin E. Jerrard

Gavin Elgin Jarrard, 37, Buffalo, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, of hypothermia in the Big Horn Mountains. He was son of Ceona Jarrard, grandson of Zenith Kagie, and brother of Rory Jarrard, all of Story. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, Fred Rosenthal officiating, followed by graveside services in Willow Grove Cemetery. Born Aug. 11, 1967, in Laramie to Ceona and Jerry Jarrard, he moved at age 2 with his family to Chicago for one year, then to Boulder, Colo., where he attended school until fifth grade. The family then moved to Rochester, N.Y., where he attended junior high and high school. He moved in 1984 to Buffalo, where he graduated from high school in 1985. He then returned to Rochester, where he attended Monroe Community College for one year. He also attended the University of Wyoming for one year. He moved in 1988 to Austin, Texas, where he worked as a zookeeper. He moved to Alpine, Texas, where he attended Sul Ross University and earned certification as a farrier. He married Mandy Heath on Dec. 18, 1998, in Alpine, and they made their home in Buffalo. Mr. Jarrard owned and operated The Cursed Hammer blacksmith shop east of Buffalo from 2002 until his death. He was active in the Department of Family Services Mentor Program in Buffalo and was a substitute teacher. He enjoyed the mountains, playing the tin whistle, and anything to do with music and animals. In addition to his relatives in Story, survivors include his wife; his father of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a brother, Ty Jarrard of West Chester, Pa.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Robert L. Morgenweck, 85, Sheridan, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

 

Jason E. Obert

Former Sheridan resident Jason Edward Obert, 29, Fountain, Colo., died Thursday, April 21, 2005, when the helicopter he was riding in was shot down in Iraq. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Sheridan College Golden Dome, Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the Army, American Legion Post 7, and the El Paso County (Colo.) sheriff's office. Memorials may benefit his sons through The Jason Obert Memorial Fund in care of Security Service Federal Credit Union, 7025 Mesa Ridge Parkway, Fountain, CO 80817.
