Maxine Riesen, 85, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray Clark and David Duprey officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Oddfellows Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Riesen was born May 13, 1916, in Alliance, Neb., to Burr and Cleo (Miller) Underwood. She grew up on her fathers ranch in the Sandhills west of Alliance. She graduated from high school in Alliance in 1937 and attended Chadron State Teachers College. She moved to Birney, Mont., and worked on ranches. She married Ernest Bill Riesen in 1942 in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Sheridan in 1945, and she worked at Linden School. She was active in St. Peters Episcopal Church and in clubs and lodges in Sheridan. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, BPOE Does, Odd Fellows Diamond Rebeccas, Pythian Sisters, Royal Neighbors and Hill Top Social Club. She enjoyed genealogy and collecting stamps. Her husband died in 1974. Survivors include two sons, Burr of Sheridan and Clell of Minitare, Neb.; a brother, Gene Underwood of Whitney, Neb.; five grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Dog and Cat Shelter or Elks Youth Scholarship Fund in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Sheridan.
Gene E. Wood, 79, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Elks Lodge 520 in Sheridan. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Wood was born March 22, 1922, in Sheridan to Elzie B. and Gertrude (Jansen) Wood. He graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a crew chief of fighter planes during World War II, mainly in the South Pacific, from 1942 until his discharge in 1946. He married Francelia Helvey April 2, 1947, at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Sheridan. He ranched most of his life. He served on the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service and was a life member of Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard G., and a sister, Fern. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Philip B. of Birney, Mont.; two daughters, Trudy G. Kittelmann of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Marcie F. Wood (Fenske) of Pawnee City, Neb.; a brother, Bruce J. of Sheridan; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Elks Club Building Fund, Birney 4- H Club or a charity of choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Sheridan.
Ruth Alderson, 87, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at her residence. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peters Episcopal Church with the Revs. David Duprey and Ray Clark co-officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Alderson was born July 2, 1914, in Kirby, Mont., to William and Lena (Barton) Ferguson. She graduated from Sheridan High School and received her nursing degree from Sheridan College. She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. She married William Alderson in Forsyth, Mont., in August 1946. She was a homemaker and worked as a licensed practical nurse eight years at Sheridan VA Medical Center. She was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972 and by five brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Sara Alderson of Billings and Suzanne Grant of Ordway, Colo.; two sons, William of Sheridan and Thomas of Wyarno; a sister, Helen Bohner of Lucerne Valley, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Carla J. Durst, 31, of Sheridan died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a battle with cancer. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Cremation will follow the service, with interment of cremains in the family plot in Illinois. Ms. Durst was born April 4, 1970, in Carmi, Ill., to John and Janice (Shoultz) Durst. She grew up and attended schools in Illinois. She came to Sheridan in 1996 and worked at the Trails End Restaurant for a few years. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, listening to music and playing video games. She was preceded in death by her sister, Crystal Lynn Shoultz. Survivors include her companion, Butch Hall of Sheridan; a daughter, Katrina Ruthann Hall of Sheridan; her mother of Sheridan; her father and stepmother, Marilyn Durst, of Branson, Mo.; a brother, Leslie Bubby Young of Sheridan; grandmother Kathleen Shoultz of Sheridan; and great-grandmother, Ruth Tarrant of Granite City, Ill. Leota ODell, 85, of Sheridan died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. A rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. ODell was born April 19, 1916, in Newcastle to Michael and Mary (McCoy) Cusick. She attended various schools including Holy Name in Sheridan, St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, Neb., and Sheridan High School. She married William B. ODell June 25, 1935, in Billings. She enjoyed the outdoors, flower gardening and playing bridge, and was active in her church. She was a member of United Transportation Union Auxiliary and Holy Name Council of Catholic Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter-in-law and a great-grandson. Survivors include five sons, Thomas W., John and Pat, all of Sheridan, Mike of Littleton, Colo., and Ed of Torrington; 18 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. Sheridan native David L. Dave Hinds, 67, of Cheyenne died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at United Medical Center West in Cheyenne. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cheyenne Masonic Temple with the Rose Croix Funeral Team of Wyoming Consistory No. 1 and the Rev. Janet Forbes of First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will be at Schraders Sunset Park Crematory. Mr. Hinds was born April 24, 1934, in Sheridan. He married Darlene Aksamit in Sheridan Nov. 24, 1955. He was a member of Capital Lodge 54 A.F. & A.M., Wyoming Consistory No. 1, York Rite Bodies and Kalif Shrine, was past president of Goodwill Industries, past chapter dad of the Order of DeMolay and past associate guardian of the Order of Jobs Daughters. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Ellen Hinds. Survivors include his wife of Cheyenne; a son, David L. of Cheyenne; a daughter, Debbie Edmonds of Denver; a sister, Joan Swift of Nevada; and six grandchildren. Wilbur G. Mascher, 90, of Sheridan died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Bishop Bret Barney officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Mascher was born Sept. 26, 1911, in Banner to Albert A. and Lillie Bell (Butterfield) Mascher. He grew up in the Sheridan area. He attended the Smith Creek School northwest of Dayton and graduated from Sheridan High School. He attended a radio repair school in Chicago after high school. He worked for his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Butterfield, a few years. They lived in Banner. He also worked for Carl Johnson, who owned the Banner Store for some years. He worked as a mechanic, and later worked for Leo Petre, who owned the Sheridan Yard. He married Mary Lois Webb July 3, 1942, in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Cheyenne, where he worked for the Chevrolet garage until 1945, when they moved back to Sheridan. He worked for Scales Motor Co., which was known later as Cook Ford. In 1952, they moved to Rexford, Mont. They lived in Montana for several years before moving to Spokane, Wash., where he worked for Fruehauf Inc. as a mechanic. They returned to Sheridan after he retired at age 72 in 1992. He was a member of the International Machinists Association, Local 1838 in Spokane, and recently received his 45-year membership pin. He enjoyed repairing mechanical and electrical items in his spare time. Four sisters and a brother preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two daughters, Carol Marler of Huntersville, N.C., and Anita Mascher of Port Orchard, Wash.; a son, David of Tacoma, Wash.; a sister, Marie Jennings of College Place, Wash.; a brother, Lester Mascher of Sumner, Wash.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donors choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.
Vivian I. Lindley, 79, formerly of Sheridan died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the Community Hospital in Torrington. No funeral services are planned at this time. Cremation has taken place under arrangements by Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington. Mrs. Lindley was born April 11, 1922, in Rosette to Charles Clark and Addie Taylor. She grew up and was educated in Sheridan. She married Roger Cecil Lindley March 28, 1959, in Sheridan. The family moved to Newcastle in 1964, and she worked 21 years for Plains Engineering, retiring in 1988. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Her husband, one brother and two sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include three daughters, Connie Rainbolt of Torrington, Susan Velten of Newcastle and Leah Duclo of Gillette; a sister, Fae Atterbery of Vernal, Utah; four grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Ruth A. Nanny Halbert, 74, of Gillette died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Assembly of God Church in Gillette with the Revs. Orvil and Dan Holden officiating. Interment will be at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette. Mrs. Halbert was born Sept. 14, 1927, in Springfield, Mo., to Russell John and Grace Edith (Whittenberg) Drake. The family moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1945. She married Richard James Halbert Jan. 14, 1947, in Yuma, Ariz. They moved to Sheridan in July 1946 and lived here until 1960, when they moved to California. They moved to Gillette in 1981. She was a member of American Legion Post 42 Auxiliary and a Denver Broncos fan, and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, a son, Richard James Halbert Jr., and a brother, John F. Drake. Survivors include two sons, Rod of Gillette and Mark Drake of California; a daughter Sandie Jones of Gillette; two brothers, Glen Drake of Sheridan and Harold Drake of Torrance, Calif.; four granddaughters; and four greatgrandchildren. Helen J. Bohman, 92, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services and burial will be in Orion, Ill. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Bohman was born Oct. 7, 1909, in Blackhawk Township, Ill., to T.A.G. and Georgia (Breadon) Johnston. She graduated high school in Illinois and graduated from Augusta College. She married Arthur Bohman in Illinois. She taught first grade for 30 years in Moline, Ill. Mr. Bohman died in 1979, and Mrs. Bohman moved to Sheridan in 1980 to live with her niece, Joyce Sterkel. She was an artist, enjoyed reading and writing and was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit the Illinois Retired Teachers Association in Springfield.
CLEARMONT Robert Lawrence Cook, 63, of
Clearmont died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at the Johnson County
Healthcare Center. There will be no services. Arrangements are
with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mr. Cook was born April 4,
1938, in Rawlins to Ward and Francis Cook. He grew up and was
educated in Rawlins and was a 1956 graduate of Rawlins High
School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean
Conflict. He returned to continue his education at the University
of Wyoming, where he received a degree in education. He taught in
schools in Rawlins, Arizona, Arvada and Clearmont before
retiring. He married Adeline Baumgartner Dec. 17, 1982. He
enjoyed reading, fishing and the mountains. Survivors include his
mother of Sutherland, Ore.; his wife, of Clearmont; two stepsons,
Jim Baumgartner of Ucross and John Baumgartner of Arvada; three
stepdaughters, Janet Riesland and Julie Weber, both of Clearmont,
and Kristi Nelson of New Mexico; a brother, Phil of Sutherland; a
sister, Sally Dubay of Santa Fe, N.M.; and four grandchildren.

August Graupner, 85, of Miles City, Mont., died Monday, Nov. 19,
2001, at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City. He was
father of Dorothy Baertsch of Sheridan. Funeral services were 11
a.m. today in the Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home chapel in
Miles City. Interment was in the family lot in the Eastern
Montana State Veteran Cemetery. Mr. Graupner was born June 23,
1916, in Berger, Mo., to Otto and Ernestine (Scheible) Graupner.
He attended school in Missouri then went to Washington and Idaho
to work in the timber business. He served in the United States
Army from August 1942 until 1945. He married Gertrude Darlington
in 1959 in Phoenix. They ranched and farmed, moving to Miles City
in 1993. He was preceded in death by Mrs. Graupner May 29, 2001.
Survivors include another daughter, Gladys Strait of Miles City;
three sisters, Esther Barnhart of Broadus, Mont., Ruth Birkholz
of Miles City and Helen Poeschel of Rochester, Wash.; six
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be
made to the charity of the donors choice.
Julia Adams
Former Sheridan County resident Julia A. Adams, 70, of Cheyenne
died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2001, at United Medical Center- West in
Cheyenne. Services were 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wiederspahn-
Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Bob Morriss and the
Rev. Makanah Morriss officiating. Cremation was at Cheyenne
Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Adams was born March 10, 1931, in Gering,
Neb., to Silas and Alberta Lyman. She lived in the Buffalo,
Ranchester and Sheridan area and was a 1948 graduate and class
Valedictorian of Ranchester High School. She attended Colorado
State University in Greeley, Colo., and the University of Wyoming
and moved to Cheyenne in 1966. She was acting director of
Archives, Museums and Historical Department for eight months
before being appointed State Archivist and director of Wyoming
State Archives. She served in that position from 1966-92. She
married Tony Adams of Cheyenne in 1992. She was preceded in death
by a brother, Dick Lyman. Survivors include her husband, of
Cheyenne; a daughter, Julie A. Buckles of Cheyenne; a brother,
Robert Lyman of Yukon, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Bessie Channel, 84, of Sheridan died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Maendl officiating. Mrs. Channel was born May 29, 1917, in Wyola, Mont., to Carl and Halie (Gilman) Riplett. She married Ernest Channel Sept. 25, 1936, in Sheridan. She was a homemaker, loved to crochet and sew and was active in church. She taught Sunday School for many years. She served as local, state and district president of the Womens Christian Temperance Union for some time. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Albert Channel; a daughter, Byrlla Myhre; a sister, Esther Hunche; and brothers Clyde, Howard and Richard Riplett. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Kuchera of Cheyenne and Ellie Horsley of Sheridan; three sons, Kenneth, Bud and Justin Skip, all of Sheridan; a brother, Kenneth Riplett of New Hyde Park, N.Y.; a sister, Blanche Rutz of Great Falls, Mont.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Dwayne Giroux Ketcham, 68, of Sheridan died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, after a lifelong battle with diabetes. Funeral services were 11 a.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Logan officiating. Burial was in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Ketcham was born Oct. 27, 1933, in Monarch to Homer and Bernice (Giroux) Ketcham. He attended Sheridan schools and was a 1952 graduate of Sheridan High School. While in high school, he worked for the Hosford Ranch, the railroad and Booras Food Market. He attended Sheridan College for a short time. He played saxophone in a local dance band. He married Doris (Brewer) Schilling June 26, 1964, in Sheridan. He joined the Air Force in 1955, serving as a radio traffic analyst with the Intelligence Department. He retired in 1958 due to illness. He worked at the Mills Printing Company as book binder and foreman of the bindery from 1959-83. He worked for a short time for the highway department and Port of Entry, starting in 1984. He was active in Scouting, and was a member of Monarch Troop 117. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Sheridan-Johnson County Pioneers. He loved traveling, especially to Disneyland. He also enjoyed reading, his grandchildren and his player piano. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell and Homer Jr., and a nephew. Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Wayne of Belfrey, Mont.; a daughter, Lisa Howard of Wamego, Kansas; two brothers, Garey of Sheridan and Ronald of Billings; a sister, Gayle Warne of Buffalo; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to benefit a fund for the education of Mr. Ketchams grandchildren, in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

LANDER Sheridan native Muriel Wilcox Tommie Bell, 76, of Lander died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at her residence in Lander. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lander Foursquare Church with Pastor Dave Holman officiating. Cremation has taken place under direction of Hudsons Funeral Home in Lander. Interment of cremains will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at a later date. Mrs. Bell was born Oct. 1, 1925, to Al and Evelyn Wilcox of Sheridan. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School and attended Oberlin College in Ohio and the University of Wyoming. She graduated in 1947 with a bachelors degree in physical education. She married Thomas A. Bell Oct. 15, 1947. After several years in Oregon, they moved to Lander in 1983. Henry Ed Schwartzkopf, 87, of Sheridan died at his residence Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services with military honors will be in Scottsbluff, Neb., at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling local arrangements. Mr. Schwartzkopf was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Scottsbluff to Alexander and Mary (Ruppert) Schwartzkopf. He grew up and attended school in Scottsbluff and joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked at various jobs in Scottsbluff, Cheyenne and Denver before coming to Sheridan 25 years ago. He enjoyed working in the yard and had special affection for his two dogs, which were his constant companions. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mollie Dalton, Amelia Ross and Rosalie Schlager, and two brothers, Alexander and William. Survivors include a son, Darrell of Washington, D.C.; and two sisters, Anna Schenaman of Scottsbluff and Kathryn Schaaf of Lincoln, Neb. Dr. William J. Browning III, 78, of Story died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Dr. Browning was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Port St. Joe, Fla., to William J. II and Rebecca M. (Barnes) Browning. After graduating from Merchantville (N.J.) High School in 1941, he graduated from Colgate University in 1943, and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1947. He married Eileen McGoldrick Oct. 8, 1947, in Merchantville. Dr. Browning interned at Cooper Hospital in Camden, N.J., in 1947. He joined the U.S. Navy as a physician in 1948, serving until 1951. He worked in family practice from 1951 to 1974 in Merchantville. He moved his practice to Story in 1974, and continued until 1976, when he became a staff physician at the VA Medical Center in Sheridan. He retired in 1987 as acting chief of medicine. He also served on the Story-Banner ambulance crew, and was a co-founder of the Sheridan hospice program. Since his retirement, his greatest interests were genealogy and travel. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520; the Pennsauken, N.J., Lions Club from 1953-1974, acting as president in 1961 and 1962; and the Story Lions Club since 1976, acting as president in 1980 and district governor 15A in 1981 and 1982. Survivors are his wife of Story; a daughter, Lyn L. Dubeck of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; a son, W. Laurence Browning of Forked River, N.J.; a brother, Kempton B. Browning of Lancaster, Pa.; a sister, Audrey Haig, of Long Beach Island, N.J.; one grandson; and two granddaughters. Sheridan-native Loren Ray Baker Brewster, 44, of Mead, Colo., died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Howe Mortuary Chapel in Longmont, Colo., with the Rev. Max Bailey of St. Stephens Episcopal Church officiating. Mr. Brewster was born June 30, 1957, in Sheridan to Leo A. and Doris (Bogue) Baker. Mr. Baker died in 1959, and Mr. Brewster was adopted by George Brewster in 1962. He attended grade school in Hygiene, Colo., and was a 1979 graduate of Niwot High School. He married Priscilla Mae Lohman Feb. 21, 1979, in Longmont. He worked for Flat Irons Paving Co., drove trucks for Golden Cement Co. and worked as a landscaper for the Pratt Agency, all of Longmont. He was employed by the town of Mead in March this year. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 12, 2001. He was a plumber, owning a shop for many years until he retired in 1988. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed seeking rocks for rock ponds and gardens. He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters and a son, Donny. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two sons, Rick of Pueblo, Colo., and Randy of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, crafts and working on her computer, and was an avid fan of her childrens sporting events. She was preceded in death by her father. Donald Melvin Pickering, 71, of Buffalo died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001 at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Buffalo with Pastor John Orwig officiating. Visitation will be at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel Nov. 6 from from 1-10 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with the American Legion and VFW in charge of graveside services. Mr. Pickering was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Minneapolis to Melvin and Dagmar Pickering. He moved with his family at age 6 to Missouri where they lived until he was 8, moving back to Minneapolis. When he was 12 the family moved to Lake Johanna, Minn. Mr. Pickering graduated from Murray High School in St. Paul, Minn. in 1950. After high school he owned and operated a service station in Minneapolis for two years. He was married to Ramona Paulson on May 9, 1952 in Lake Johanna. Mr. Pickering joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and served for two years in Korea. After his military duty he returned to St. Paul where he attended Augsburg College and earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1957. Mr. Pickering moved his family to Sleepy Eye, Minn. where he taught high school English for four years before moving to Glencoe, Minn. where he taught for six years. Later he taught in Chaska, Minn. for six years. The family moved to Buffalo in 1973 where they owned and operated the Montgomery Ward store for 14 years. In 1987 they purchased the Pines Lodge in the mountains above Buffalo, which they sold in 2000. Mr. Pickering was past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Anchor Lodge #7 AF and AM, the Kalif Temple and Knights Templar. He and wife Mona enjoyed classic cars, fine food, traveling and visiting family and friends around the world. Mr. Pickering loved his family and enjoyed weekends at their mountain cabin. He had a passion for snowmobiling and motorcycling. A pilot, he owned four different airplanes. Mr. Pickering is survived by his wife; four daughters, Stephanie Blevins of Port Orange, Fla., Cheryl Pickering of Sheridan, Cynthia Larsen of Sheridan and Kristin Pickering of St. Paul, Minn.; his stepfather Herb Welters; one brother, Gerald Pickering of Warrington, Pa.; two sisters, Lois Arndt of Roseville, Minn. and Jean Wontor of Fridley, Minn.; three grandsons; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may donate in Mr. Pickering's memory to St. Luke's Lutheran Church in care of the Adams Funeral Home.

Dorla Maxine Ridings, 72, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, in Evergreen, Colo., after a long battle with lung cancer. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. today at St. Peters Episcopal Church with Father David Duprey officiating. A reception will follow at the Sheridan Center. Mrs. Ridings was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Cheyenne Wells, Colo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ridings. Survivors include four children, Shelley Reed of Newcastle, Kathryn Chamberlain of Toluca, Ill., Jeannie Wells of Sheridan and Chuck of Arvada, Colo.; two sisters, Winnie Murr of Colorado and Colleen Dimick of Arizona and Colorado; two brothers, Bob Compher of Colorado and Bill Compher of Alabama; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter.
Dean Sanders, 85, of Sheridan died here Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001. Services are pending at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton, Neb. Mr. Sanders was born Jan. 25, 1916, in Garretson, S.D., to Carl and Ellen (Shiveley) Sanders. He attended public schools in Dell Rapids, Brookings, Canton and Centerville, S.D., graduating from Centerville in 1933. He attended the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State College. He worked at newspapers in South Dakota and Michigan before going to work for the South Dakota highway department in 1937. He married Margaret Pollock July 2, 1938, in Pierre, S.D. He started work on defense projects in the Black Hills for the U.S. Engineering Service as a civil engineer following the outbreak of World War II. In 1942 he volunteered for the U.S. Navy Construction Battalions and served in Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, Hawaii and Japan. After his discharge from the Navy, he and his brother, Keith, purchased The Creighton News. He was associated with the newspaper 35 years, including 30 as publisher. He was a member of the Creighton Chamber of Commerce for many years. He was a member of Creighton United Church of Christ, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He and his wife moved to Sheridan in 1998 to be near their son, Carl, publisher of The Sheridan Press. Mrs. Sanders died Oct. 4, 2000. Mr. Sanders also was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Keith; a grandson; and one great-grandson. In addition to his son of Sheridan, Mr. Sanders survivors include three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Helen V. Juve, 82, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at her home in Copley, Ohio. She was mother of Tina Klinkosh of Sheridan. A memorial service was Oct. 20 in Copley, with inurnment Oct. 22 at Rose Hill Burial Park. Mrs. Juve was a member of Copley United Methodist Church and a longtime board member and chairwoman of the YWCA. Survivors include her husband, Robert; another daughter, Jenifer Hemstead of Oceanside, Calif.; one son, Robert Jr. of Laramie; a brother, Jack Vosburg; a sister, Mary Catherine Colwell; and four grandchildren.
