Mary Louise Tanner

A memorial service for Mary Louise Tanner, 85, of Sheridan will be later at Bethesda Worship Center. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Tanner died Nov. 27, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born July 9, 1922, in Ada, Okla., to Delbert and Inez (Wallace) Lambert. The family moved to Escondido, Calif., when she was a child, and she grew up and attended schools there. She married Robert L. Tanner on March 22, 1939, in Escondido. She was a homemaker and did housekeeping for several families in the Escondido area. Mr. Tanner died in 1978. Mrs. Tanner moved to Sheridan in 1985 to be near family. A member of Bethesda Worship Center, she enjoyed her flower garden, painting, crafts, and spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and one granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, William L. of Phoenix and Robert L. of Midland, Mich.; three daughters, Opal Campbell of Midland, Carol Leining of Marlin, Texas, and Betty Hahn of Sheridan; a sister, Betty A. Kurtz of Escondido; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

 

Bill E. Archer

A memorial service for Bill E. Archer, 70, of Story will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Story Woman's Club with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Archer died Nov. 26, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1937, in Sheridan to Lloyd and Elsie (Walker) Archer. He attended school in Story and Sheridan and graduated from the University of Minnesota. He served in the military during the Korean conflict. He married Constance Schaefer on July 6, 1962, in Sheridan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his mandolin and guitar and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cliff and Bud. Survivors include his wife; a son, John of Rice Lake, Wis.; three daughters, Jacqueline Lowry of Clear Lake, Iowa, Michelle Engum of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Geraldine Larson of River Falls, Wis.; a sister, Dorothy Terry of Gillette; a brother, Floyd Archer of Belvidere, Tenn.; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Story Woman's Club or Story Centennial Museum.

 

Bobbie Joe Johnson

Graveside services with military honors for Bobbie Joe Johnson, 75, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Johnson died Nov. 25, 2007, in Denver VA Medical Center. He was born in Paris, Tenn., on March 17, 1932, to Brent and Minnie Johnson. He served in the Air Force from 1949 until his honorable discharge in 1953 after serving in Korea. He enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War from 1965-67. He received the Purple Heart, 27 air medals, a Good Conduct Medal and the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Vietnam. He was a police officer in Roseberg, Ore., from 1955-62 and a self-employed pilot in Paris from 1967-83. He married Nancy Wilson on Nov. 20, 1986, in El Paso, Texas. They moved to Sheridan in 1988. Mr. Johnson was caretaker for the Sheridan County Sportsmen's Association. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Sherree Johnson of Paris; a son, Brent Johnson of Courtland, N.Y.; four stepchildren, Judy Efaw of El Paso, Keli Ladd of Syracuse, N.Y., Lori Springer of Grover Beach, Calif., and Ronnie Ward of Paris; a sister, Mary Miclean of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. James E. `Dick' McKenzie

Memorial services for James E. “Dick” McKenzie, 83, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. McKenzie died Nov. 20, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Sayle, Mont., to Frank and Kate McKenzie. He married Betty J. French on Dec. 30, 1946, in Hardin, Mont. He lived his life as a rancher and loved cattle and horses. He was preceded in death by a son, James E. McKenzie Jr.; two sisters; a brother; and a grandson. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Chuck of Gillette and Rich of Sheridan; three sisters; three brothers; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Adelaida A. Caroll

Dr. Adelaida A. Caroll, 90, of Sheridan died Nov. 23, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Dr. Caroll, who earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1940, was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, to Ceferino and Alicia (Carreras) Jiminez-Rojo. She married Servio Caroll on Dec. 17, 1944, in Havana. She dedicated her professional career to working with infectious diseases in the laboratory, where she was later director. She also designed and sewed clothing for herself and her family and studied at a conservatory to become a master pianist and teacher. She was a strong anti-communist and participated in the anti-Castro underground. She sent her son to the United States after the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion failed. She and her husband came to Sheridan in 1980. She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant great-grandson. Survivors include her son, Servio Carroll (who spells his name with two r's) of Sheridan; a brother, Oscar J. Rojo; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Catherine Buckner Peacock

Catherine Buckner Peacock, 84 of Cedartown, Ga., died Nov. 21, 2007. She was mother of Michael Clay Peacock of Sheridan. Funeral services were this morning in First Baptist Church of Rockmart, Ga. Burial is in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery with arrangements by Freeman Harris Funeral Home of Rockmart. Mrs. Peacock was born March 12, 1923, in Riverside, Ala., to Lela Pearson Buckner and Hershel Buckner. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockmart and was a retired school teacher with 37 years' service in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina, Florida and Wyoming. She was preceded in death by her husband, George William “Billy” Peacock. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Ann Peacock of Rockmart; a second son, William Lee Peacock of Rockmart; a brother, John Marion Buckner of Poulsbo, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Loa Carpenter

Loa Carpenter, 72, of Sheridan died Nov. 23, 2007, in Sheridan Manor after a long illness. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop John Slaughter officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Carpenter was born Oct. 30, 1935, to Nathan and Lettie Pierce. She trained with Catholic sisters to work at the hospital while she was in high school. After high school, she received her teaching degree from Western Montana College of Education in Dillon. Her first teaching job was in White Sulphur Springs, Mont. She married Bruce Carpenter on May 30, 1956, in St. Ignatius, Mont. In addition to being a wife, mother and teacher, Mrs. Carpenter cooked for ranch crews, was a substitute teacher, worked in Yellowstone National Park, was a Head Start teacher and nurse's aide, and managed the parts department at Montgomery Wards. She was also past president of Big Goose Women's Club, a 4-H leader, Cowbells leader and Camp Fire Girls leader. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Loa Marie Francis of Cut Off, La., Marcella Ring of Evanston, and Gerry Smith of Texarkana, Ark.; a son, Charles of Sheridan; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy M. Pedulla

Dorothy M. Pedulla, 87, of Sheridan died Nov. 23, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Pedulla was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Sheridan to Jett and Carrie (Nelson) Swinyer. She grew up and attended schools here and was a 1939 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Roco Pedulla on July 16, 1939, in Hardin, Mont. She worked at Holly Sugar Factory, National Coil Co. and XL Tire Co. as a bookkeeper. A member of Eagles Auxiliary, she enjoyed hunting, fishing, the family's cabin in the Big Horn Mountains, and dancing. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and a daughter. Survivors include a daughter, Loyola Kiefling of Jackson; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Bobbie Joe Johnson

Bobbie Joe Johnson, 75, of Sheridan died Nov. 20, 2007, in Denver VA Medical Center. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Howard W. Jorgenson

Graveside services for Howard W. Jorgenson, 94, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Elks section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Jorgenson died Nov. 20, 2007, at his residence. Contrary to the funeral home's earlier announcement, services will not be private.

Keith Burton Salmonson

Keith Burton Salmonson, 86, of Sheridan died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be at a later date at Bethesda Worship Center. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Salmonson was born July 26, 1921, in Detroit to Albe and Christina (Scholberg) Salmonson. He grew up and attended schools in Dearborn, Mich., and was a 1946 graduate of Michigan Agricultural College in Dearborn. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines. He married Carol Potee in 1946 in Ann Arbor, Mich. She preceded him in death in 1995. He married Carolyn Watt in Junction City, Ore., in 1999. She preceded him in death in 2005. He was a missionary, associated with the Agricultural Missionary and the Peace Corps in Ecuador (the Heifer Project). He was administrative assistant in the biology department at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He also was an organic farmer and a senior companion. He was a member of the Jewish Voice Ministry, the Marilyn Hickey Ministry, the Benny Hinn Ministry, Messianic Vision, Global Prayer Digest, Jerusalem Prayer Team and Open Doors U.S.A. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, singing, traveling and sports, especially football, basketball and baseball. He was involved in churches in Sheridan. Survivors include a son, Loren Kjell of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two daughters, Rachel Lynne of Winston-Salem and Heidi Jo of Fairfield, Iowa; two sisters, Carol Mills of Plymouth, Mich., and Sally Warner of Traverse City, Mich.; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Open Doors in California or the Oasis of Love Ministry Outreach in Sheridan.

Gaylord M. Richardson

Gaylord M. Richardson, 72, of Sheridan died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Platteville, Colo. Burial will be in Platteville Mizpah Cemetery. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Richardson was born Feb. 5, 1935, in Crab Orchard, Neb., to Charles and Gwendolyn (Anderson) Richardson. The family moved to Colorado when he was a child, and he grew up and graduated from high school in Platteville. He married Shirlee Reed in December 1953. They were divorced in 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953-57, then returned to Platteville where he farmed, milked cows, hauled equipment and pulled trailer houses. He married Shirley Mullings in 1969. They were divorced in 1986. Mr. Richardson moved to Mason, Texas, in the late 1990s. He later married Susan (Schell) Richardson. They were divorced in 2001. He moved to Sheridan in 2000 to be near a son, Kerry. Mr. Richardson was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6011. He enjoyed farming, ranching, good horses, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. In addition to his son in Sheridan, he is survived by sons Tim Richardson, Bill, Frank and Bob Cress and Wade Schell; two daughters, Gayla Richardson Norgren and Kelly Schell Barnes; a brother, Bruce; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Ramona Hininger

Funeral services for Ramona Hininger, 76, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hininger died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 9, 1931, in Clinton, Okla., to Herbert and Mary Nabors. She graduated from Cowden (Okla.) High School in 1949 and entered beauty school. She worked as a beautician until last year. She married J.R Hininger on Aug. 9, 1954. He preceded her in death. She enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, playing cards with her grandchildren, spending time with her family and, for many years, square-dancing. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson. Survivors include a son, Scott of Sheridan; a daughter, Mary Jo Hutton of Gillette; three brothers, Loyd and Gerald Nabors, both of Cordell, Okla., and Bobby Nabors of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Violet Christine `Peg' Depew

Violet Christine “Peg” Depew, 85, of Sheridan died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Dale Gosney and the Rev. Cindy Arndt officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with private family graveside services. Mrs. Depew was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Ward County, N.D., to Jacob and Christina Hansen. She grew up and was educated in North Dakota and attended Kenmare (N.D.) High School. She moved to Everett, Wash., when she was 18. She married Roy Depew on Dec. 15, 1941, in Everett. They lived in Washington, California and Texas while Mr. Depew was in the military. After the war, they lived in Seattle until 1948 when they moved to Kaycee where they worked on various Barnum Ranches. They moved to Buffalo in 1962. Mrs. Depew was a nurse's aid for 23 years, until 1985, when she retired. Mr. Depew died in February 1991. Mrs. Depew moved to Sheridan in April of this year to be closer to her family. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Buffalo and enjoyed cooking and writing poetry. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, one granddaughter, three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a son, Marty of Sheridan; a daughter, Peggy Norman of Sheridan; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Senior Center or the Kaycee Library Fund in care of the funeral home at 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Funeral services for Carl “Kelly” Weber, 97, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Weber died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 102 S. Alan Steven

Alan Steven, 54, Sheridan, died Nov. 13, 2007, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Memorials services are 3 p.m. Sunday at Four Square Gospel Church. Born Nov. 29, 1952, in Los Angeles to George and Evelyn Steven, he graduated from Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley, Calif., and enlisted in the Air Force, where he worked on jet maintenance. He was stationed at Edwards and Travis Air Force bases from 1972 until his honorable discharge in 1980. Mr. Steven loved his tow-truck operation and enjoyed building model cars and airplanes. His father preceded him in death. Survivors include two children, Carrie Steven of South Dakota and A.J. Steven of Sheridan; his mother of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and four siblings, Garry Steven of Banner, Sandy Rue and Greg Steven, both of Fort Wayne, and Kevin Steven of Sylmar, Calif. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

 

Nelda M. Carroll

Nelda Mae Carroll, 84, Sheridan, died Nov. 12, 2007, at her residence. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Sheridan, Pastor Ken Doolin officiating. Born May 1, 1923, in Sheridan to Lucille (Kegerreis) and Hanney G. Olson, she attended Whitney Grade School at Meade Creek and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1941. During World War II, she enrolled in the nursing program at Montana State University-Bozeman. She also attended the University of Utah, where she belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married William B. Carroll on Jan. 2, 1947, in Sheridan. She belonged to First Baptist Church of Sheridan, Women's Missionary Society, PEO Chapter T, and Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Board. Mrs. Carroll also served as regent with the Sheridan Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, chairman of the Girl Scout Cookie Drive, and participated in the Linden School Throat Culture Program. She enjoyed time with her family, golf, reading, American Indian history, painting, knitting, and politics. A daughter, Mary Ann Carroll Taylor, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Jane Carroll of Denver, Catherine Kiaie of Milwaukee, and Patricia Prestfeldt and Margaret Sare, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Martha Baker of Tucson, Ariz., and Duretta Vestal of Salinas, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit First Baptist Church, 3179 Big Horn Ave., or Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. Fifth St., both in Sheridan. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

BUFFALO — Darrell L. Mauck, 77, of Buffalo died Nov. 14, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Jack Lewis Cotton

Burial for Jack Lewis Cotton, 78, of Sheridan will be at noon Thursday in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. No local services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Cotton died Nov. 13, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Sheridan to George L. and Edna Mae (Swinger) Cotton. He grew up in this area and attended Beaver Creek, Beckton and Big Goose schools. He served with the Army and Navy during the Korean War. During that time, he was in charge of a mule team squad, served as a cook, and boxed. He married his first wife, Asako, in Japan in 1960 while he was in the service. They were divorced. He married Pearl Boalden in 1970 in Missoula, Mont. She died in 1994. Mr. Cotton returned to Sheridan. He worked as a ranch hand and cowboy and in body shops in Sheridan and Montana. He was a member of the Eagles and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and vehicle mechanic work. In addition to his second wife, he was preceded in death by a brother and one sister. Survivors include a son, Patrick of Denver; two daughters, Val Regan of Denver and Sheila Cybyski of Seattle; a brother, George Jerry of Sheridan; a sister, Ruth Elaine Deutsch of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

 

Margaret June `Maggie' Zowada

Viewing for Margaret June “Maggie” Zowada, 65, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Zowada died Nov. 11, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center from complications of diabetes. She was born Sept. 13, 1942, in Lewiston, Mont., to Emil and Dorothy (Foster) Landa. She grew up on a wheat farm near Helger, Mont. In the mid-1950s, her family moved to Roy, Mont., where she graduated from high school. She moved to Sheridan after graduation. She married Thomas Arizona. After his death, she went to work in housekeeping at Sheridan VA Medical Center. She married Alben Zowada on June 10, 1967. She retired from Sheridan VAMC in 1996, then became a newspaper carrier for the Billings Gazette for a time. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles auxiliaries and B.P.O. Does. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; and a sister, Dorothy Ann Steinke. Survivors include her husband and a brother, Edward Landa of Temple, Texas. Annette R. Watt

Annette R. Watt, 91, of Buffalo died Nov. 13, 2007, in Amie Holt Care Center there. She was mother of Regina Leath of Banner. The family plans a private burial later. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Watt was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Wahpeton, N.D., to Joseph F. and Mary F. (Dow) Richter. The family lived in in Wahpeton, Big Sandy, Mont., and Hardin, Mont., before moving to Buffalo in 1922. Mrs. Watt was a 1935 graduate of Johnson County High School. She married Donald J. Watt on Oct. 6, 1941, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Buffalo. They made their home on the Watt ranch east of Buffalo until Mr. Watt joined the Navy during World War II. They returned to the ranch after his discharge. They moved to Buffalo in 1975, turning the ranch operation over to their son. They continued to spend summers at their mountain cabin watching cattle for the Muddy Creek Cattle Association. Mr. Watt died in April 1983. Mrs. Watt was a longtime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Clear Creek Homemakers Club. She delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. An avid bowler, she also enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting and spending time at the mountain cabin. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Dave, in 2006; two infant children, Elaine and Vida; two sisters, Marian Holland and Madelyn Thorburn; a brother, Dow J. Richter; and a grandson. In addition to her daughter, survivors include a sister, Genevieve Camino of Buffalo; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Connie Joan Andre

Former Sheridan resident Connie Joan Andre, 70, of Colorado died Oct. 30, 2007, in the Aurora (Colo.) South Medical Center following a long illness. Cremation has taken place at her request. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan. Mrs. Andre was born May 1, 1937, in Omaha, Neb., to Werner and Alvera (Shaw) Wittges. The family moved to Minneapolis, then returned to Omaha, where she graduated from North High School. She married Larry Andre on Sept. 16, 1959. They moved to Sheridan in 1967. They were divorced. A ham radio operator, Mrs. Andre was a member of Snomads and Trinity Lutheran Church until she moved to Colorado. She was a waitress for many years in Omaha and at Best Western Sheridan Center, the Sheridan Inn and Golden Steer in Sheridan. She also was a real estate agent for Cloud Peak Realty until she retired. She enjoyed camping, hunting, cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Songer of Sheridan; a son, Timothy of Santa Fe, N.M.; two sisters, Sherry Peterson of Mesa, Ariz., and Judy Baker of Deepwater, Mo.; a brother, Max Wittges of Cologne, Germany; and five grandchildren.

She worked in Sheridan VA Medical Center dietetic services for more than 30 years until she retired. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed making noodles and fruitcake for the holidays. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Joe, and two sisters, Rose Green and Jean Springer. Mary Matejovitz

Mary Matejovitz, 93, of Sheridan died Nov. 5, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. A memorial service will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Matejovitz was born March 24, 1914, in Kooi to Joseph and Frances (Mates) Legerski. She married Louis Matejovitz on Nov. 20, 1932, in Monarch. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Burlington Northern Railroad Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Mae Roush of Pueblo West, Colo.; a sister, Agnes Hallworth of Ranchester; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Note: Mrs. Matejovitz's obituary was published in Tuesday's Sheridan Press, but information from the funeral home gave the wrong maiden name and omitted the name of her sister.

 

Keith Marion Shoumaker

Keith Marion Shoumaker, 86, of Sheridan died Nov. 8, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Mr. Shoumaker was born May 31, 1921, in Buffalo to Wiley and Evelyn Shoumaker. He grew up and attended schools in Buffalo and was a 1939 graduate of Johnson County High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa, England and Italy during World War II. He was discharged in spring 1945. He married Joyce Searcy on Dec. 7, 1945, in Hardin, Mont. They made their home in Buffalo, where Mr. Shoumaker ranched and served as Johnson County assessor for 16 years. The family moved in 1978 to Wright, where he worked for Rocky Mountain Energy mining uranium. He retired in 1986, and the family returned to Buffalo until moving to Sheridan in 2003. Mr. Shoumaker had resided in Sheridan VAMC's nursing facility for a year. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and past member of the American Legion. He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge and was a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed horses, spending time in the mountains and hunting. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, and an infant sister. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Michael Shoumaker of Gillette; a daughter, Lennetta Fivecoat of Midland, Texas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services for former Sheridan resident Terry Weiss, 41, of Evanston will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Weiss died Nov. 6, 2007, in Evanston of natural causes. He was born Sept. 2, 1966, in Murdo, S.D., to Richard and Carol Weiss. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Norris, S.D., and confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, S.D. After graduating at the top of his high school class, he joined the Army in 1985 in Fort Benning, Ga. He was honorably discharged. He enjoyed travel, books, cars, movies and spending time with children. Survivors include his parents of Dayton; and two sisters, Michelle Garhart of Newcastle and Kathy Bettcher of Sheridan.

Mildred Herrick Lindquist Taylor

Former Sheridan resident Mildred Herrick Lindquist Taylor, 93, of Worland died Nov. 4, 2007, in the Wyoming Retirement Center there. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Worland with Pastor Sean Matako officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland. Mrs. Taylor was born Dec. 3, 1913, in Iowa to Edgar and Minnie (Osborn) Herrick. Her parents died of the Spanish flu in 1918, and she was raised by her older sisters. She attended country schools, where she enjoyed playing baseball at recess. She also enjoyed dancing. She married Milo Lindquist in 1930. The family moved to the West Coast in 1944, and Mrs. Taylor and her husband worked in the Kaiser shipyard in Vancouver, Wash. The couple divorced in 1945, and Mrs. Taylor moved to Oregon with her children. She married Horace “Tex” Taylor in 1948, and they moved to Worland, where she worked at Simons grocery store and Gambles. In 1958, the family moved to Sheridan, where Mrs. Taylor worked at Sears. She and her husband later managed a trailer court and were assistants at senior citizens' apartments here. Mr. Taylor died in 1987, and Mrs. Taylor returned to Worland to live near one of her daughters. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles, a brother, and six sisters. Survivors include three daughters, Elsie St. Clair, Marjorie Harward and Deanna Hammond; two stepchildren, Iris Reynolds and Ronnie Taylor; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandson. Katherine Martini Reed

Funeral services for Katherine Martini Reed, 94, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Reed died Nov. 1, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Sept. 25, 1913, to George and Caroline (Oberbach) Smith in a rock house on Tongue River. The home is still there. Mrs. Reed attended school at Piney and later at Murphy Gulch, where the family built a home in 1922. In 1928 she attended one year of high school in Gillette while living with her sister. She finished high school in Sheridan while working for Dr. Veach for room and board. She received her Normal Training certificate through a postgraduate program and taught all eight grades in a one-room school on Murphy Gulch in 1934 and 1935. She married Henry E. “Hank” Martini in Billings on May 19, 1934. He died Dec. 29, 1971. Mrs. Reed married Harold Reed on Dec. 8, 1985. He died Dec. 29, 1995. Mrs. Reed was a member of First Christian Church since 1943 and also belonged to Odd Fellows, Eagles, Homemakers and Good Sam's RV Club. She volunteered at the hospital and Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed gardening, church activities, volunteer work, television game shows, crossword puzzles, writing in her daily journal, reading the Bible, and spending time with her family. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Moe Martini; a daughter, Jean Bennett; two brothers; three sisters; and four grandsons. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Taylor of Yuma, Ariz., and Judy Lawrence of Greenfield, Mo.; a son, Jerry Martini of Sheridan; a sister, Dorothy Anderson of Olympia, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit First Christian Church.

A celebration of the life of former Sheridan resident Kenneth T. Calkins will be Saturday afternoon at the home of Susan T. Brayton, 610 S. Cecile Almira (Bilter) Sanborn

Former Sheridan resident Cecile Almira (Bilter) Sanborn, 74, of Richmond, Maine, died Nov. 2, 2007, in her residence following a long illness. At her request, no formal services will be held. She was born May 11, 1933, in Skowhegan, Maine, to John F. Bilter and Lena Mae (Cobb) Bilter. She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., Portland, Maine, and Gray, Maine, where she graduated from Pennell High School in 1951. She joined the U.S. Air Force soon after graduation. After a short term in the military, she returned to Maine and worked as a waitress. She married Raymond W. Sanborn on Aug. 18, 1958, in Portland, Maine. They returned to Gray and later lived in Sheridan and Topsham, Maine, before moving to Richmond in 1991. Mrs. Sanborn spent much of her life as a homemaker and mother. She was a cribbage player and trivia buff and enjoyed raising exotic fowl. She was preceded in death by two infant sons, Michael and John, and a grandson. Survivors include her husband; six daughters, Sheril Lillard, Kaye Bouchard, Cynthia Sanborn, Rae Hoskins, Lori Woods and Cecile Greenman; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Thelma Mae Sorensen, 70, of Sturgis, S.D., died Nov. 2, 2007, in Sturgis Regional Health Care Center. She was mother of David Sorensen of Sheridan and Kevin Sorensen of Dayton. Mass of Christian Burial was this morning at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis. Burial will be later. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Home in Sturgis. Mrs. Sorensen was born in Wagner, S.D., to John and Dorothy (Payer) Hron. She married Merl Sorensen in 1957, and the family moved to Sturgis in 1962. She and her husband were divorced in 1978. She enjoyed hiking, playing cards and spending time with friends and family. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and the Homebound Ministry. She worked as deputy registrar of deeds for nine years, in medical centers for 18 years, and at Pamida for five years. Survivors include a third son, the Rev. Bryan Sorensen of Martin, S.D.; a daughter, Valerie Meirose of Sturgis; her mother of Baraboo, Wis.; two sisters, Wilma Leonard of West Baraboo, Wis., and Joan Kniffen of Livermore, Colo.; a brother, Bob Hron of Virginia Beach, Va.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
