JOAN LUCAS DIXON
APRIL 7, 1923 - NOVEMBER 26, 2009

Joan Lucas Dixon, 86, died Thursday, November 26, 2009, in Westview Healthcare Center in Sheridan. Joan was born in Paoli, Pennsylvania on Midstream Farm, to Gerald Lucas and Adelaide Loughead. As a child she loved the horses and pets she had on the farm. Her love of animals stayed with her through her life, and she was always thrilled to provide a home to whatever stray or homeless pet came her way. As a young woman Joan spent three summers in Birney, Montana on a working dude ranch. That experience cemented her love of the west, and she developed a strong desire to one day make her home near the western mountains. Joan also loved the ocean and particularly enjoyed spending her summers in Maine on the Atlantic coast. As a young woman she also learned to ski at Mount Tremblant in Quebec, where she eventually obtained her certificate as a ski instructor. During World War II Joan nursed wounded veterans at Valley Forge. At the same time she obtained her pilot_s license with the ultimate aim of joining the Air Force. For a short time she was part of an adventurous group of civilian women pilots who shuttled warplanes for the Air Force; however her goal of joining the armed services was cut short when the war ended. After the war she married Morris Dixon, and as an avid horsewoman, she spent several years helping him train thoroughbred racehorses. Eventually they both gave in to their desire to live in the west. She and Morris bought Rapid Creek Ranch in Sheridan and they moved the family there in 1962. They raised registered Red Angus cattle on the ranch for many years. Joan spent many happy years teaching skiing at Antelope Butte ski area in the Big Horn Mountains. For a time she also taught honors literature and reading classes part-time at Holy Name School. She loved her home near the mountains, and continued to cherish her horses and pets until her death. She had a vibrant personality and loved working with people. She was also a skilled pianist and artist. She spent much of her time riding, gardening, reading, listening to music, and watching the wildlife surrounding her home. Survivors include her sister Barbara, her four children, Kathy Smiley, Daniel Dixon, Mark Dixon and Shawn Dixon, and four grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan Animal Shelter. Private family services will be held at a later date. Kane funeral home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Joan “Joann ” Schilling

Joan Pollard Schilling was surrounded by her family and love as the Lord called her home on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, after a long, reoccurring battle with cancer. She was born February 13, 1930 to Joseph and Marguerite Pollard in Sheridan, Wyoming. She grew up in Monarch, Wyoming, and attended high school in Sheridan. She met a handsome “Navy boy,” Gerald “Jerry” Schilling and they crossed over the border to Lodge Grass, Montana, to elope March 27, 1949. Joan loved to spend time with Jerry hunting, camping, traveling, or entertaining friends and family. They celebrated their Golden 50th Anniversary shortly before Jerry passed away in 1999. When they decided to start a family, their first blessing came as a daughter, Sandra; two years later, Bruce blessed and completed their family. They lived in Sheridan and then moved to Worland when the kids were in elementary school. Joan worked at the Boys’ School in Worland while they lived there. Joan and Jerry moved to Gillette in 1970. In her early years living there, she was a member of the DOES and multiple mixed and women’s bowling leagues. She loved the Lord and found fellowship at various churches in Gillette. She most recently attended Emanuel Southern Baptist Church. Joan was a fan of contemporary gospel music. She loved taking drives - especially to the Big Horn Mountains where she had so many fond memories; she watched every camper or motor home go by and could recall a different memory for every one of them. She was an animal lover and she had a mixture of dogs, cats, and birds all her life. Her other passion was good food – she collected recipes, clipping them from various sources, storing them in cookie tins just like her mother had done. She always had fresh vegetables and fruit in her refrigerator and always something cooking on the stove. She loved going out of town because that always meant a meal at a nice restaurant. Joan made every effort to keep the cookie jar full for anyone who came to visit. The last year was hard for her not just because of her fight with cancer, but also because so many of her joys were compromised. The one constant, though, was the love for and from her family. Her family was by far her best and biggest accomplishment. She adored her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and companion pets. She surrounded herself with pictures of them all. Joan is survived by her brother, George (Linda) Pollard of Kileen, Texas; children, Sandra (Tetsuo) Ota, and Bruce (Laurie) Schilling both of Gillette; her grandchildren Lance (Carrie) Ota of Kaysville, Utah, Christa (Ryan) Conklin, Trevor (Jodi) Schilling, Janell (Joe) Uhler of Gillette, and Trent Ota of Fort Collins, Colorado; and greatgrandchildren Jayden, Bryton, Tyler, Brooke, Cory, Riley and Caisen, Carter, Kadence, and beloved pet, Penny. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, infant grandson Drew Schilling, half-sister, and half-brother. Per her request, a private family gathering was held on Thursday, October 15th. Her cremated remains will be spread at a private location in the spring.

Deanna Bess George

A beautiful spirit has left this world to join family and friends already in Heaven. Deanna Bess George passed serenely into the next world on November 3, 2009, at the Lower Cape Fear Life Center and Hospice in Wilmington, North Carolina. As she had desired, her brother-in-law Jean-Claude Bosio and her sister Elaine held her in their arms as she departed. While ovarian cancer and surgical complications ravaged her body, they did not bow her spirit. Deanna was a consummate daughter, sister and friend. A unique creation, she possessed an unusual depth of empathy and generosity of spirit for others. For those woven into the tapestry that was her life, life was sweeter, more fun and definitely richer for knowing her. Deanna was a passionate woman. Her appetite for art, music, theatre, film, travel and yes, food, was legendary. She was an explorer of life, not an observer. She was born July 24, 1948, in Sheridan. Graduating from Sheridan High school in 1966, she attended the University of Oregon in Willamette, the University of Wyoming, and graduated from the University of Denver in 1971 with a degree in Museology. She lived and worked for periods of time in Greece, Waltham Massachusetts, and Durham, North Carolina before moving to Sheridan in 1978 to work with her sister, Eleanor, in managing Bessie’s Bargains. This store was started by Deanna’s mother, Bessie George, in competition to her husband Dan’s store. These were some of Deanna’s happiest times as a businesswoman. Ellie, Wanda, Martha and Deanna had great fun running the store. Later Deanna became owner/manager of the revived Dan’s Western Wear, a business her father had started in 1919 and originally was located at the corner of Loucks and Main and where he
had commissioned the mural to be painted which can be seen today. Until she died, she was involved in the management of Dan’s. In 1985 she married Terrance Poland, of Seaside, California. Together they produced and directed several plays in Sheridan. They were also active in the Sheridan Theater Guild. Terrance eventually began to work at Dan’s and remained there until 2008. The two separated and filed for divorce in 2009. She was involved in several community choirs, traveling to perform in NYC with the All Wyoming Choir. She served as president in the Fine Arts Club and the Sheridan Arts Council. She actively supported Christy Love’s efforts to have the Sheridan Main Street recognized in the Historical Preservation Registry. She attended the Episcopal Church in Sheridan. Deanna is preceded in death by her mother Bessie George, father Dan George, and sister Ellie Chadwick. She is survived by brother Ted George, sister Elaine Nalee, nephews Andre Stamenkovic, Demetrious George, Rodrigo George, and Erik Freestone, and niece Flavia George. Helen McMahan is her only living aunt. The bereavement and pain of loss which weighs on the souls of her family and friends is tribute to the rare spirit she was. We shall not see her like again soon. Deanna, who loved animals and fostered seven puppies during chemo treatment at her sister’s home, suggested that she could be remembered with a donation to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 12th at 4:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be private.
