Janice Steinmetz

Former Sheridan County resident Janice Jay Steinmetz, 63, of Sturgis, S.D., died of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in the Bella Vista Nursing Home in Rapid City. Visitation is noon until 9 p.m. today and until noon Friday in the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Keith Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Mrs. Steinmetz was born Jan. 16, 1939, in Columbine to Clarence J. and Mable Matilda (Clemens) Tanner. She grew up near Midwest. Her family moved to Evansville, where she attended school. She graduated from Casper High School. She married Bob Steinmetz in Billings. They later moved to Buffalo, then to Ranchester, where they ranched until moving to DuBois, where she worked as a private home health care nurse. They moved to Sheridan after Mr. Steinmetz retired from ranching. They later moved to Sturgis. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Senior Citizens Center in DuBois and the Sturgis Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include her husband; a son, Luke of Newell, S.D.; a stepson, Lucky of Port Orchard, Wash.; two brothers, Lee Tanner and Louis Tanner, both of Casper; a sister, Geraldine "Sissy" Miller of Casper; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. A memorial has been established to the Sturgis Project Playground.

Helen Slater

Helen Slater, 87, of Sheridan died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Revs. Bob Miller and Ray Clark co-officiating. Mrs. Slater was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Sheridan to Mike and Hedwik (Rucki) Krezelok. After graduating from high school, she worked for the school system as a cook. She married Gerald W. Slater Oct. 17, 1936, in Sheridan. She continued to work for the school system as a cook for many years. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, quilting, cooking and baking, flowers, spending time with her family and friends. She loved to dance in her younger years. She was a past 4-H leader and belonged to DOEs, Rebekahs, Royal Neighbors, Cherri Chix Homemakers Club and First Congregational Church of Sheridan. She was preceded in death by a grandson; a brother, Mike "Bill" Krezelok; and two sisters, Hedwik Miech and Ann Fairbank. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Shirley Schilling of Casper and Judy Engle of Wheatridge, Colo.; two sisters, Margaret Ellenwood of Banner and Mary Miech of Sheridan; two brothers, Frank Krezelok of Banner and Joseph Krezelok of Greybull; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lloyd Dale Cammack

Lloyd Dale Cammack, 74, of Buffalo, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Cremation will follow with private family committal services in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Columbarium at a later date. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Helen Slater, 87, of Sheridan died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Fannie Sackett

BUFFALO – Fannie Belle Sackett, 98, of Buffalo died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Amie Holt Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Big Horn Baptist Church in Buffalo with Pastor Danny Francis officiating. Visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until noon Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery. Maxine Mildred Swanson

Maxine Mildred Swanson, 79, of Sheridan, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today, and 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Swanson was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Porum, Okla., to William Lester and Elizabeth Cordela (Phillips) Shelton. She grew up and attended schools in Porum. She graduated from high school in California. She met her husband, Martin Jesse Swanson, in California, and they were married In Sheridan in 1945. She was a military wife and spent the next 20 years traveling with her husband and living in many areas of the United States. Mr. Swanson retired in 1965 in Snohomish, Wash., and they returned to Sheridan in 1971, where she resided until her death. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 7, where she received a 50-year pin, and also belonged to Elks and Eagles auxiliaries. She was active in the dartball league and politics and enjoyed sewing and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, two sisters and her daughter. She is survived by a grandson, Ron L. Holt of Wright, whom she raised; a brother, Wayne K. Dunkin of Victor, Mont; two great-grandchildren; 16 nieces and nephews; 23 great-nieces and great-nephews; 22 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; one great-great-great-niece and one great-great-great-nephew.

Lorna Jean Ekis

Lorna Jean Ekis, 78, of Sheridan died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Deaconess Billings Clinic in Billings. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Private family interment will be in the Masonic Lodge 43 Cemetery. Mrs. Ekis was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Sheridan to Lawrence and Maude (Warner) Cooke. Following high school graduation, she married Bernard G. Ekis Nov. 7, 1948, in Sheridan. She worked for many years at Montgomery Ward in Sheridan. She was a member of the McCormick Homemakers Club and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. During her younger years, she loved horseback riding. She was an accomplished musician and enjoyed playing for dances. She loved her family and loved doing activities with them at her mountain mobile home. She was preceded in death by her sister, Norma L. Oswley, her brother, Merton Cooke, and a granddaughter, Krista Ekis. Survivors include her husband; her son, Lawrence, of Sheridan; and a grandson. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Travel Fund or the American Diabetes Association in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Anne Jenkins

Anne Jenkins, 72, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Doug Goodwin officiating. Mrs. Jenkins was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Laurinburg, N.C., to James Walter and Elizabeth Hollis. She graduated from Meredith College with a degree in education. She married Robert Jenkins in 1952 and moved to Eugene, Ore. They divorced there but remained friends. She moved to Bend, Ore., and then to Portland, Ore., after suffering a stroke in 1992. She moved to Sheridan in 1999. Survivors include three children, Jeff Jenkins of Chandler, Ariz., Jeri Jenkins of Portland and Charlotte Jenkins of Sheridan; two sisters, Margaret Kissinger of Hayes, Va., and Frances Wilson of Red Springs, N.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Charles Washburn

Charles Harry Washburn, 86, former minister of Sheridan’s First Presbyterian Church, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the Hospice of the Central Coast in Monterey, Calif., from complications of a massive stroke. Services were Friday in Salinas, Calif., where he had lived the past three years. A second service will be 1 p.m. Sunday in the Burlingame, Calif., First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Church Prayer Garden. Arrangements are with Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel of Salinas. He was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Santa Monica, Calif. He graduated from the University of California/Los Angeles and the Princeton and San Francisco theological seminaries. He was an army chaplain with rank of captain during World War II in the European Theater. He was a Presbyterian minister for more than 61 years, serving churches in St. Anthony, Rexburg and Idaho Falls, Idaho; Effingham, Ill.; Edinburgh, Scotland; Wellington, New Zealand; and Sonoma, Petaluma, Daly City, Pacifica and San Francisco, Calif., in addition to Sheridan. He served Sheridan’s church from 1958-65. He was founding chaplain for the Convalescent Hospital Ministry in California’s Contra Costa and San Mateo counties and was a member of the Presbyteries of San Francisco and San Jose, Calif., and the Sons of the American Revolution. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Winnie; a daughter, Harriet Priska of Escalante, Utah; two sons, John of Fresno, Calif., and George of Des Moines, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. John Leis

BUFFALO – John George "Blackie" Leis, 68, Buffalo, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with the Rev. John Orwig officiating. Interment will follow in Willow Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home chapel from 1-10 p.m. Monday and 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Mr. Leis was born April 18, 1934, in Buffalo to Conrad and Eva Leis. He grew up and received his education in Buffalo, graduating from Johnson County High School in 1952. He married Della Schroder on Jan. 22, 1956, in Buffalo. They moved to Powell in the late 1950s, where they lived and worked until moving to Tucson, Ariz., in 1977. They retired and moved back to Buffalo in 1995. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and loved to hunt, fish and spend time in the mountains with friends. He worked in the oil fields and a machine shop. Leis was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and one son. He is survived by two daughters, Sherrie Locke of Lovell and Christine Noakes of Big Lake, Alaska; one brother, Bill of Buffalo; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Donations may be made in his memory to Buffalo Eagles Lodge in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Stanley Mentock

Sheridan County native Stanley J. Mentock, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in Bakersfield, Calif. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Mentock was born July 25, 1910, in Dietz to John S. and Cecelia Mentock. He grew up there, later moving to Bakersfield. He was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, four brothers and a sister. Survivors include two sisters, Anna K. Zowada of Sheridan and Rose Coassin of Worland; and several nieces and nephews.

James Dabney

Arvada native James E. Dabney, 82, of Riverton died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in the Wind River Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Riverton after a long illness. Memorial services were Wednesday in the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. Inurnment will be in Arvada Cemetery. Mr. Dabney was born Dec. 30, 1919, on a homestead outside Arvada. He attended Barber Creek School and graduated from Arvada High School, where he played many sports, including a game with the Harlem Globetrotters. He married Avis K. Hull Aug. 30, 1941, in Hardin, Mont. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served four years as a baker first class aboard the USS Harris. After service he returned to the Sheridan area, where he worked for a baker and, later, for the Hull Ranch east of Sheridan. He also worked for Wyoming Automotive in Sheridan before transferring in 1980 to Riverton, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Big A, NAPA and Dabney Dry Cleaners. He retired in 1986. He enjoyed bowling and watching baseball. He was preceded in death by his former wife and a brother. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Dabney Settlemire of Riverton; two sons, James R. of Cogan Station, Pa., and Terry L. of Huron, S.D.; a brother, Mike of Indio, Calif.; a sister, Vera Huson of Cheyenne; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Arnold Griffith

Arnold "Lucky" Griffith Sr., 91, Sheridan, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services were Wednesday in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo with Father John Meyer officiating. Burial was in Willow Grove Cemetery with Masonic graveside services by Anchor Lodge 7 AF and AM and military graveside rites by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Griffith was a longtime resident of Buffalo before moving here in 2001. He was born April 4, 1911, in Dawson, Minn., to Barnabus and Mary Griffith. He was a member of the Minnesota National Guard when World War II broke out, and he was called into active duty in 1941. He served in the European Campaign and fought on Normandy Beach and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in 1945 but remained active in the Minnesota National Guard. He married Betty Balden July 30, 1945, in Buffalo. They made their home in Alexandria, Minn., where Mr. Griffith was a police officer until he was called back to active duty in the Korean conflict. The family moved to Buffalo when he was released from active duty. He was a police officer and was active in the Army Reserve, retiring as a master sergeant. He worked for the post office from 1954 until 1976, when he retired. He then worked off and on for the Jim Gatchell Museum in Buffalo until 1993. Mrs. Griffith died in 1990. Mr. Griffith married Dee Ausman Dec. 26, 1991, in Buffalo. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, Anchor Lodge 7 AF and AM, the Kalif Shrine, the Episcopal Church and the 49ers. He was past member of the Buffalo City Council. He delivered Meals on Wheels for the Buffalo Senior Center. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, dancing and bowling and was an avid sports fan. He was a past scoutmaster and coached Little League baseball. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John of Lebanon, Pa., Arnie of Buffalo and Gary of Phoenix; a daughter, Mary Beth Koolhaus of Grenada Hills, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Kaufeldt

Mary A. "Tootsie" Kaufeldt, 72, of Sheridan died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and the family will scatter her cremains in a private ceremony per her request. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Kane Funeral Home with George Telez officiating. Mrs. Kaufeldt was born Nov. 7, 1929, in Grandfield, Okla., to Frank Vincent Josefy and Mabel Lee (Warner) Josefy. She spent her life working and learning to better herself. She started as a waitress, became a cook, then became a bookkeeper. She married Frank Kawulok Jr. Oct. 6, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas. They later divorced but remained friends. She married Glen "Dutch" Kaufeldt in 1974 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They divorced in 1999. She moved to Sheridan to be close to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to sew and cook and passed on many of her recipes to her family. She also enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint and the mountains. Survivors include children Billie Rawlings and Frank Kawulok of Sheridan and Rudy Kawulok of Cheyenne; seven brothers and sisters, Jim Josefy, Harold Josefy and Lewis Josefy, all of Grandfield, Katherine Kemplin of Wichita Falls, Carleene Cason of Dallas, Marie Tinlin of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Paul Josefy of San Francisco; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Emma Walters

DAYTON – Emma Walters, 79, of Dayton died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at her residence. Services are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

John Seamster

Longtime Sheridan resident John William Seamster, 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at his residence in Las Vegas following a short illness. Cremation took place. Garden Memorial Funeral Home of Las Vegas handled arrangements. Mr. Seamster was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Wyoming to George Seamster Sr. and Louise Gunnells Seamster. He was a printer and a veteran of the Army and Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Joan; daughters Debra McWhorter of Alabama, Diana Deets of California, Davi Diorio and Dylynn Lackinger, both of Las Vegas, and Donna Gray, Durena Mize and Dru Seamster, all of Washington; a brother, Bernard; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Lester Charles Doyen

Lester Charles Doyen, 97, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy is 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ron Stolcis as celebrant. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Doyen was born July 2, 1905, in Richwoods, Mo., to William T. and Maggie J. (Rutledge) Doyen. He moved at age 12 with his family to the Buffalo area, where he and his father built fences on various ranches. He then moved to Midwest, where he started his painting career. After several years, he moved back to Sheridan and bought a ranch south of town. Mr. Doyen moved into Sheridan in 1948, where he was a painter until his retirement in 1970. He was past member of the Eagles club and Knights of Columbus and a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and raised a large garden. He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother and two sisters. Survivors include one stepgranddaughter, Teresa Stephenson, of Sheridan; K.C. Shearwood of Clinton, Utah, who was raised by Doyen; and several nieces and nephews. BUFFALO – Lenard Walter "Supi" Bauer, 78, of Buffalo died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Madge Hobein

Madge Hobein, 80, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Private family services will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Hobein was born June 1, 1922, in Stockport, England, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Slater. She grew up and graduated from high school in England. She met Lawrence Hobein while he was stationed in England during World War II, and they married there Feb. 6, 1943. They moved to Sheridan after the war and lived here several years, then lived in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan, Colorado and other states before retiring to Sun City, Ariz., in 1989. Mr. Hobein died in 1998, and Mrs. Hobein returned to Sheridan in 2000. Survivors include a sister, Sheila Sargent of Dorsett, England; and several nieces and nephews.

Lester Doyen

Lester Charles Doyen, 97, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ron Stolcis as celebrant. Ayron D. Johnson

Ayron Drew Johnson, 31, Big Horn, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home, Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 1, 1971, in Sheridan to Toby and Linda (Knust) Johnson. He grew up in Sheridan and Gillette and graduated from Judson High School in Arizona. He lived in Steamboat Springs, Colo., before returning to Wyoming this past year. He loved spending time with his son, family and friends, skiing, hunting, fishing, golf and Nascar racing. His mother, Linda Lee Ratcliff, preceded him in death. Survivors include his son, Dylan Johnson, Westminster, Colo.; his parents, Toby and Marie Johnson of Big Horn; his sister, Sara Johnson, Big Horn; two brothers, Kristopher and Ryan Johnson, both of Big Horn; and a grandmother, Betty Johnson, Gillette. Milton McKenna

Milton L. McKenna, 79, formerly of Sheridan died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Riddle Memorial Hospital, Glen Mills, Pa. Services were Aug. 10 in St. Cornelius Church in Chadds Ford, Pa. Burial was private. He was a 1941 graduate of Sheridan High School and still attended SHS reunions. He attended the University of Washington as a member of the Navy ROTC. He was commissioned into active service early in 1944 and served aboard the USS Sangamon, an aircraft carrier, in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He returned to the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He was stationed at the Naval Air Materials Center in Philadelphia during the Korean War. Funeral services for Edna Earl Panetta, 82, of Sheridan, are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan with Pastor Chuck Gifford officiating. Interment will follow at the Elks Cemetery in Sheridan. Mrs. Panetta died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at Pioneer Manor in Gillette of natural causes. She was born June 14, 1920 to James and Ella (Patterson) Taylor, in Briggs, Texas. She was raised and educated in Texas. After graduating from high school in 1937 she completed three years of nurses training at Tarrent County General Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. She served in the Army Nurse Corps in Hawaii from February 1941 to January 1946. After the war, while visiting relatives in Sheridan, she met and later married Walter Panetta. She worked as a nurse at the Sheridan VA Hospital until her retirement. Mrs. Panetta loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and her pets. She also enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and going to auction sales. She is survived by two daughters, Pam (Mike) Winterholler of Sheridan and Katie (Ken) Melton of Gillette, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, two sisters and one brother. Memorials are suggested to an animal shelter of one's choice or the Big Horn School Educational Fund. Mrs. Burnside was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Clarksburg, W.Va., to Fred and Evelyn (Holmes) Post. She grew up in West Milford, W.Va., and graduated from Unidis High School in 1953. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in the Class of 1957/58 with a bachelor’s degree in science. She belonged to Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Psi Kappa, and other campus organizations. She worked as a medical technician. She moved to Wyoming in 1974 and, except for four years, resided in the Sheridan area. She was an active member of the Mormon Church and enjoyed genealogy, paleontology, crafts, music and reading. Survivors include three children, Michael Cole Burnside, Clarksburg, Lisa Kay Painter, Sewickley, Pa., and Gina Lynn Burnside, Leesburg, Va.; and a grandson. Harold S. Adkins, 71, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in the VA Medical Center in Sheridan. No services are scheduled. Mr. Adkins was born July 5, 1931, in Mitchell, S.D., to Paul Z. and Mary E. (VanNatta) Adkins. He spent his teenage years in Parkston, S.D. In his early 20s, he moved to Cheyenne and at age 25 moved to Deadwood, S.D., where he worked at the Homestake Mine. He lived in Deadwood until the early 1960s, when he moved to Minnesota. He returned to Wyoming in the early 1970s and lived in Cheyenne, Laramie and Lyman. In 1994, Mr. Adkins moved to Sheridan, where he lived until his death. He worked for the Wyoming Air National Guard while in Cheyenne. Mr. Adkins served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Survivors include his wife, Beverly; two stepdaughters, Deborah Smith of Sheridan and Robin Smith of Salt Lake City; two brothers, Adelbert G. Adkins of Deadwood and Cliff Adkins of Parkston; and nine nieces and nephews.

Charles Terres Peterson, 76, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at his home in Sheridan with his family at his side. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan with Pastors Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Mr. Peterson was born March 15, 1926, in Blue Earth, Minn., to Elizabeth and Tobias Peterson. He attended high school at Augustana Academy in Canton, S.D. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and went to officer’s training at the University of Colorado. After discharge from the service, he graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in geology. He played football for the UW Cowboys and was all-conference and honorable mention All-American. He married Diane Stephens Aug. 21, 1948, in Park Ridge, Ill. After graduation he returned to the family farm in Blue Earth for eight years. He then took a sales job with General Mills, where he worked for 22 years living in Detroit Lakes, Minn., Shreveport, La., and finally Long Lake, Minn. He retired early and started an industrial chemical consulting business in Sheridan, which he continued until his death. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He was affiliated with the Cowboy Joe Club, Wyoming State Seniors Golf, Trinity Lutheran Church, Ducks Unlimited and National Wildlife Federation. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Peterson; a grandson, Eric Peterson; three sisters, Eleanor Larson, Margaret Reinertson, and Elaine Miller; and a brother, David Peterson. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Stephen, of Bloomington, Ill., Scott of Allen, Texas, and Kent of White Bear Lake Minn., and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; a sister, Elizabeth Boito of Santa Maria, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He married Leona "Nonnie" Canfield April 30, 1939. The couple moved to Cheyenne, and he took a position as clerk in the sales tax division for the state of Wyoming. He became a clerk for Burlington Trailways Bus Co. in 1941, retiring in 1980 as a regional superintendent. After his wife died in 1980, he became a bookkeeper for the Albany Cafe and worked there until moving to Sheridan in 1999. Survivors include a son, Larry, and daughter, Geraldine, both of Sheridan; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Hook of South Dakota and Nora Reimer of Cheyenne; and a brother, Don, of Texas. She grew up at Leiter, attended the Cadiz and Hill schools and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1953. She married Gene L. Reimers Feb. 13, 1958, in Sheridan. She was a bookkeeper for Riley Motor Co., Sheridan County Clerk’s Office, and Sheridan Motor Inc. She also worked at Boyd’s Supermarket and J.C. Penney Co. Inc. She belonged to Job’s Daughters in high school and First Christian Church, Sheridan. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also enjoyed horses, camping and reading. A brother, a grandson, a nephew and a niece preceded her in death. She worked in various areas of branch operations for the last five years. Prior to that, she worked in the branch operations center in Lansing, Mich. She moved back to Sheridan in 1996 to be near her sister, Patricia Ward, who survives her. She enjoyed working in her garden and loved animals. BRIDGER, Mont. – O.J. (Jack) Musegades, 91, a longtime resident of Bridger and a former resident of the Sheridan area, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in Bridger. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bridger. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Bridger Senior Center. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Musegades was born in 1911 in Mason County, Ill., to Otto and Emma (Boeldt) Musegades. He moved to the Ucross-Clearmont area about 1934 and worked on a ranch. He met Dorothy Pabst, the daughter of Lucas and Katie Pabst, who owned an adjoining ranch, and they married in 1936 in Sheridan. They began married life working a ranch on Beaver Creek, and their three children were born in Sheridan and attended school on Beaver Creek. The family moved to the Bridger area about 1951. He was a farmer/rancher in the Bridger area for more than 50 years and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Bridger Senior Center. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993; five brothers; and an infant son. Survivors include a son, Dale, of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, JoAnn Peters of Bridger and Donna Reichert of Billings; two sisters, Agnes Rehman and Isabella Moeckly, both of Minnesota; seven grandchildren; and 14 grandchildren.

BUFFALO – Janie C. Adams, 107, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Johnson County Health Care Center. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mrs. Adams was born May 22, 1895, in Scotland. Her family moved to Buffalo in 1906. They arrived in Clearmont by train and took the stagecoach from there to Buffalo. She attended schools in Buffalo and married George M. Adams Dec. 10, 1916. Mr. Adams was associated with Adams and Son Grocery and later purchased the Buffalo Trust and Title Co., which they operated from 1928 until retiring in 1963. Mr. Adams died in October 1971, and Mrs. Adams continued to live in Buffalo until her death. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo and was in many bridge groups over the years. Survivors include one son, Bill, of Buffalo; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Donald, and a grandson, Mark Adams.

Esther L. Burns

Esther Lorraine Burns, 54, of Buffalo, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Billings. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel, Buffalo, with the Rev. She married Sherman Burns on May 31, 1969, in Philip. They lived in Philip before moving to Colorado, where she worked in banking. The family moved in 1980 to Buffalo, where she worked at First National Bank until her death. She enjoyed sewing, travel, outdoor sports, fishing with her companion and soul mate, Ray Holt, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her father and a brother preceded her in death. Frank Kawulok

Frank J. Kawulok Jr., 75, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with George Telez officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mr. Kawulok was born April 30, 1927, in Monarch to Frank and Mary (Soltis) Kawulok Sr. He graduated from Ranchester High School, where he played basketball and football. He worked for Monarch Coal Co. and ranched until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1949. He served until 1953. He married and was later divorced. He went to work for the Wyoming Employment Security Commission in 1956 in Worland. He transferred to the Sheridan office in 1962 and was promoted to manager in 1964. He married Ellen Brantz Feb. 25, 1972. He worked for the WESC until July 1987, when he retired. He was a charter member of the Tongue River Rod & Gun Club and a member of the Ranchester Volunteer Fire Department. He was past president of the Wyoming Public Employees Association and a life member of Disabled American Veterans and Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family in the mountains. A sister, Rose Bocek, and a brother, Jack, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; two sons, Frank III of Sheridan and Rudy of Cheyenne; a daughter, Billie Rawlings of Sheridan; a brother, Walter "Ray" of Ranchester; five sisters, Mary Wolney, Anna Kettley and Dorothy Williams, all of Sheridan, Katherine Kukuchka of Ranchester and Jeanette Bauder of Davenport, Iowa; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles Edmundson

Charles F. Edmundson, 76, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, near Wyarno. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Edmundson was born March 7, 1926, at the Ranger Station on North Mills River, Henderson County, N.C., to Charles S. and Delphia Maria (Sentell) Edmundson. During his childhood, the family lived at ranger stations in the Osceola National Forest in Florida and Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee. He enlisted in the Army in April 1944 and served with the 1258th Combat Engineers, who were attached to the 3rd Army in the European Theater. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and was discharged in April 1946. He married Wilma "Jean" Terry Oct. 12, 1947, at the Mule Shoe Ranch in Wheatland. Mr. Edmundson enjoyed hunting and fishing. For the last 15 years he fished for salmon in British Columbia and Alaska. He loved his family, the outdoors, Wyoming and his country. He enjoyed flowers, gardening and listening to gospel-quartet music. He was an avid fan of Monday Night Football and a member of the Jeans & Queens Square Dance Club. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Whitmore, Edna Williams and Inez Barrick; and three brothers, Doyle, Junior and Bill. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; three daughters, Terry Bochmann and Mary Edmundson, both of Sheridan, and Charlene Bullock of Littleton, Colo.; a son, Tom of Tooele, Utah; a sister, Kate Burgess of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Dubois of Chesnee, S.C.; and five grandchildren. David Barbula

David William Barbula, 16, of Sheridan died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Memorial services will be 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sheridan High School Auditorium with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. A reception at the Historic Sheridan Inn will follow the services. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Barbula was born Sept. 10, 1986, in Laramie to Larry and Mary Barbula. The family returned to Sheridan in December that year. He was in 10th grade at Sheridan High School and belonged to the FFA and High School Rodeo Association. He was a member of Eco Club in junior high school. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horses, dancing, country music, working outdoors, fixing his truck and socializing. Survivors include his parents; a brother, Lucas of Sheridan; grandparents Treva and Jim Lannon, Darleen and Bill Schunk and Ed and Misty Barbula, all of Sheridan; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may be made in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 to benefit youth activities to be determined later by his parents.
