James Cerwick

Mass of Christian Burial for former Sheridan resident James Cerwick, 21, of Bellevue, Wash., will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Visitation will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home, followed by a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery after Friday's service. Mr. Cerwick died Oct. 27, 2007, in Bellevue due to a house fire. He was born Sept. 24, 1986, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Ray Cerwick and Collette (Mallinger-Cerwick) Prill. The family lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa, then moved to Sheridan in 1991. He participated in sports throughout his school years and was a member of the soccer team during his final two years of high school. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 2005, then had several jobs before moving to Bellevue. He worked for Olympic Boats at the time of his death. He enjoyed playing the guitar, attending concerts, listening to music, watching movies and travel. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Barbara Mallinger. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, John Prill, of Sheridan; his father of Perry, Iowa; four brothers, Jesse, Michael and Mason Cerwick and Stephen Prill, all of Sheridan; a sister, Stephanie Prill of Sheridan; three grandparents, James Mallinger of Fort Dodge, James Cerwick of Hardy, Iowa, and Sally Cerwick of Duncombe, Iowa; and two step-grandparents, Bud and Terri Prill of Ranchester.

 

Rodger James Parrish

Graveside services for Rodger James Parrish, 67, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wilson-Tall Bull Cemetery in Kirby, Mont., under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Parrish, also known as Nakoxhaa Eho'esestse (High Bear), died Oct. 28, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center following an extended illness. At his request, cremation has taken place. He was born July 5, 1940, in Lame Deer, Mont., to Emmett and Alice Wilson Parrish. He attended schools in Germany, St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Mont., and Busby (Mont.) Boarding School. After school, he worked at ranches in Montana and Wyoming and on road construction in Utah and Montana. He also worked at Decker Coal from 1972-86, at St. Labre Indian School, Montana Power in Colstrip, and Western Energy, from which he retired in 2005. He was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. He served in the Army in 1963 and was a 39-year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed rodeos, fishing, crafts, and reading Westerns and books about American Indian culture. He supported his children in their school and sports, attended sporting events, and took his dog, Mary Lee, wherever he went. Survivors include his daughter, Lynsey Parrish; a son, Scott Woodward; two sisters, Mary Ann Nickerson and Delpha M. Murray; and two adopted sisters, Adeline Fox and Delpha Harris.

 

Helen Martinek

Sheridan County native Helen Martinek, 90, of Spearfish, S.D., died Oct. 28, 2007, in Spearfish Regional Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be later. Arrangements are with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish. Mrs. Martinek was born April 18, 1917, in Kleenburn to George and Anna Wantulok. She lived most of her life in this area. She was a retired employee with the Veterans Administration. She married Mike Martinek on Jan. 11, 1936, in Sheridan. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Carol; a sister, Ann Ades; and a brother, George Wantulok. Survivors include two sons, Larry of Gillette and Donald of Phoenix; four grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

 

Connie Andre

Former Sheridan resident Connie Andre, 70, of Denver died Oct. 30, 2007, in Denver. Memorial services are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Andrew Lonnie George Nelson

Funeral services for Andrew Lonnie George Nelson, 18, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethesda Worship Center with the Rev. Tim Tromble officiating.

Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Mr. Nelson died Oct. 26, 2007, in Thorne-Rider Park.

He was born Dec. 6, 1988, in Sheridan to David and Kelley (Slates) Nelson. He grew up and attended schools here.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, backpacking and skateboarding with his cousin Kyle and other friends.

He attended Bethesda Worship Center.

Survivors include his parents of Sheridan; three sisters, Amy Perkins of Hot Springs, Ark., and Amber Evans and Autumn Evans, both of Gillette; and grandparents Jean and E.E. Lonabaugh and Jean Walker.

June G. Hartman

June G. Hartman, 91, of Sheridan died Oct. 26, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and private family services have been held. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hartman was born June 26, 1916, in Greeley, Colo., to Arthur and Violet Twist. The family moved to Denver after she was born, and she graduated from South High School there. She married Clifford R. Hartman on Sept. 1, 1940. They moved to Hotchkiss, Colo. The family moved to Sheridan in November 1958. Mrs. Hartman enjoyed knitting, sewing and working on projects at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. She also enjoyed reading, visits from her grandchildren, being taken for pizza by her grandson Jon, and daily walks with her friend Marie Howard. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Ralph Jr.; and a great-grandson. Survivors include four daughters, Jeanice Massaro of Mesa, Ariz., Jeanette Shreve of Tallahassee, Fla., Charlene Jorgenson of Prescott, Ariz., and Judy McCasland of Sheridan; a son, Rex of Mesa; two sisters, Gail Fitzsimmons and Gloria VanHouten of California; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Rodger James Parrish

Rodger James Parrish, also known as Nakoxhaa Eho'esestse (High Bear), 67, of Sheridan died Oct. 28, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center following a long illness. At his request, cremation has taken place, and graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Wilson-Tall Bull Cemetery in Kirby, Mont. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Doris Stewart Carlson

Former Sheridan resident Doris Stewart Carlson of Gillette died Oct. 27, 2007, after a battle with cancer. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Pisgah Cemetery with the Rev. Martin Crump officiating. A celebration of Mrs. Carlson's life will follow at Gillette Golf Course Country Club. Mrs. Carlson was born in Moorcroft in 1930 to Frank and Della Stewart. After graduating from Moorcroft High School, she attended beauty school in Sheridan, where she later married Roy Wilbur Carlson. She developed real estate, owned and operated an art gallery and partnered with her sons in ownership of a sporting goods store in Gillette. She bred and raised horses, painted in oils, danced and played the piano. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and reading and painting with the Senior Center art group in Gillette. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Nikki Neiman; two sisters, Beryl and Marlys; a brother, Rex; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, Ronald of Las Vegas and Michael of Gillette; a daughter, Christy Schomer of Gillette; a sister, Donna Tanner of Gillette; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Christy Schomer, 2224 Gallery View Drive, Gillette, WY 82718, and funds will be divided among the Gillette Hospice, Gillette Senior Art Center and the Kasey Neiman Wrestling Scholarship Fund. Mary Kathryn `Katie' Popovich

Mary Kathryn “Katie” Popovich, 79, of Sheridan died Oct. 26, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Popovich was born March 24, 1928, in Bozeman, Mont., to Ottie and Frances (Just) Cloninger. She married Charles W. Popovich on June 11, 1947, in Bozeman. They moved to Sheridan in 1950. She worked as a secretary at Highland Park School for nearly 20 years, starting in 1964. After retiring, she became the family historian. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Sheridan Genealogical Society, and Sheridan County Historical Society. She enjoyed travel, knitting, sports, history and activities with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; a son, Mike of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara Ann Wells of Dubois; a brother, Howard Cloninger of Bozeman; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. George Rowe

Former Sheridan resident George Rowe, 81, of Billings died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2007, in the Billings Clinic of natural causes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the Community Bible Church in Fort Benton, Mont. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery there under direction of Benton Funeral Home. Mr. Rowe was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Fort Benton to Edward and Amelia (Koch) Rowe. He enlisted in the Navy in October 1943 and served as a carpenter's mate. After service, he worked throughout Montana and elsewhere as a civil engineer. He married Mary Butler of Big Sandy, Mont., in December 1946. They later divorced. He married Madonna Lyons, and they lived in Sheridan for a time. They later divorced. He moved to Billings in 1998. He was a member of Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and a lifetime member of the Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his son, John Kenneth; a sister, Edna; two brothers, John and Kenneth; and three great-granddaughters. Survivors include four daughters, Debra Simpson, Danya Nivens of Anaconda, Mont., Tamara McCarthy of Boise, Idaho, and Georgina Williams of Cheyenne; two sisters, Katherine Vitt of Great Falls, Mont., and Emma Jean Blumer of Hayden, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Michael N. Petrovich

Former Sheridan and Carneyville resident Michael N. Petrovich, 94, of Rock Springs died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, in the Sage View Care Center. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Oct. 10 in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Springs. A prayer service was 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Vase Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Rock Springs. Mr. Petrovich was born June 8, 1913, in Cambria to Nikodim and Kosara Rancic Petrovich. He attended schools in Carneyville and Sheridan and was a 1932 graduate of Sheridan High School. He married Frances Poulos on Oct. 7, 1950, in SHeridan. He worked at Sheridan Coal Co. for 17 years and at FMC for 25 years. He retired in 1978. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Sheridan starting in 1934. He was part of the United Mine Workers Association for 17 years and a charter member of United Steel Workers Association Local 13215, a lifetime member of the Democratic party and a pioneer in the Wyoming conservation movement to preserve Wyoming wilderness. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fly fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson. Survivors include his wife, of Rock Springs; a daughter, Stasha Sayer of Sheridan; two sons, Michael S. and Nikodim C. Petrovich, both of Rock Springs; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Jeffrey R. Wadlington

BUFFALO — Jeffrey R. Wadlington, 43, of Buffalo died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at his residence. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Thelma Marie Joan 'Pat' Turk

Thelma Marie Joan "Pat" Turk, 69, of Kaycee died Oct. 24, 2007, in Johnson County Health Care Center. She was sister of Bobby Arndt of Arvada. Private family services are pending with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Mrs. Turk was born Nov. 24, 1937, in Buffalo to Robert and Thelma Arndt. Her brother gave her the nickname "Pat" before she was born. She grew up on her family's ranch west of Kaycee and attended Kaycee schools. She was a 1955 graduate of Kaycee High School and attended Casper College. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming in 1959. She married Dallas Turk in March 1959 in Casper. The couple lived on her family's ranch in Kaycee. She enjoyed being around animals, especially horses and dogs, riding, working with livestock, the outdoors, and drawing and painting. A big focus of her life was to preserve and improve the ranch, which has been in her family since 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband. In addition to her sisters, survivors include two sons, Raymon and Hugh, both of Kaycee; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Kaycee FFA Chapter in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Agnes R. Elliott

Agnes R. Elliott, 90, of Sheridan died in her sleep Oct. 25, 2007, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and private family services are planned later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Elliott was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Franklin, Mont., to Grant and Viola Petit. She married Ray Elliott on Aug. 3, 1935. They lived many years on a ranch in Arvada. She enjoyed working outdoors, gardening, fishing, fencing, remodeling houses as a carpenter, cooking, baking and sewing. She and her husband operated a small grocery store in Arvada in the 1950s, and she later carried mail on the Spotted Horse-Upper Powder River Route. She moved to Sheridan in her later years to be close to family. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, William G.; two sisters, Clara and Iola; and a brother, Kenneth. Survivors include a daughter, Roberta McKenzie of Sheridan; a son, Doug of Decker, Mont.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

John F. Harle

Former Sheridan resident John F. Harle, 60, of Rapid City died Oct. 23, 2007, in Fort Meade Medical Center in Sturgis, S.D. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Don W. Hoover

Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Don W. Hoover, 87, of Anderson, S.C., will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Hayden Porter officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Hoover was born Aug. 24, 1920, to Harry A. and Jessie Hoover at his family's homestead in Gopher, Mont. He grew up and attended rural schools on the family's ranch. The family later lived in Sheridan during the school year and on the ranch in the summer, and Mr. Hoover graduated from Sheridan High School. After his father died in 1937, he and his older brother, Duane, ran the family ranch and carried mail in the area for 47 years. Mr. Hoover was a brand inspector for the state of Montana for many years and a member of the Montana Livestock Association. He married Carol Spring on Dec. 2, 1951. They lived on the ranch until 1993, when they retired to Sheridan. He was a member of Pine Butte Bible Church in Montana and Mountain View Baptist Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed ranch life, guiding hunters, and sports, especially baseball and rodeos. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Bette Wilson and Jean Haraldson; and his brother. Survivors include five children, Janice Nelson of Beulah, N.D., Harry Hoover of Sandy, Utah, Ruth Cook of Boone, N.C., Mary Hendricks of Anderson, and Rebecca Ashbridges of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Imogene N. Highstreet

Imogene N. Highstreet, 101, Sheridan, died Oct. 19, 2007, in Lincoln, Neb. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Rev. William Heine officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Dec. 18, 1905, in Norton, Kan., to S. Albert and Ethel (Young) Lough, she grew up in Red Cloud, Neb., and graduated from high school in Hastings, Neb. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., and was a telephone operator for a time. She moved to Sheridan in the early 1930s. She married Delmar Highstreet on April 12, 1935. He died in 2001. Mrs. Highstreet went to Lincoln in July to be near her daughter. A member of Immanuel Litheran Church, she enjoyed crafts, sewing, knitting and crochet. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death in addition to her husband. Survivors include a daughter, Delene Legband of Valparaiso, Neb.; a sister, Christina Skultety of Hermiston, Ore.; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Imanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Steven Joseph Geiss

Steven Joseph Geiss, 26, of Sheridan died Oct. 18, 2007, at his residence of apparently natural causes. A memorial service is planned later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Geiss was born Nov. 21, 1980, in Sheridan to Mark S. and Lorrie A. (Kildau) Geiss. He grew up and attended schools here and was employed by Fred Bohnsack at Country Construction. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, alpine skiing and being with family and friends. He was a member of the high school wrestling team. Survivors include his parents of Sheridan; two brothers, Timothy Geiss and Chris Morgan, both of Sheridan; and his grandparents, Gordon Geiss of Anchorage, Alaska, Raymond and Agnes Kildau of Lampe, Mo., and John and Mary Ellen McWilliams of Sheridan. Susan Patton Fletcher

Memorial services for Susan Patton Fletcher, 54, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Mrs. Fletcher died Oct. 17, 2007, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings after a five-year battle with chronic lymphatic leukemia. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. She was born Feb. 19, 1953, in Dillon, Mont., to John and Virginia (Tovey) Patton. The family moved to Sheridan in 1954, and she attended elementary and high schools here. She married George Fletcher in Sheridan in 1971. The family lived in Bozeman, Mont., from 1972-76 while Mr. Fletcher attended college. They returned to Sheridan in 1976. Mrs. Fletcher began working part time for Fletcher Construction Co. as payroll clerk after her children were in school. She eventually became full-time bookkeeper and corporate secretary/treasurer. She was a member of the company's board of directors for more than 20 years and a co-owner of Fletcher Construction Co. and Fletcher Development LLC. After retiring, she continued to work with crews helping shingle roofs, pour and finish concrete, and do general labor including operating a skid steer loader. She received the title "Director of Fun" for the company. She helped build the addition to the family's cabin at TeePee in the Big Horn Mountains. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends, traveling — including trips from Maine to Hawaii and to Puerto Angel, Oaxaca and other sites in Mexico — entertaining, playing bridge and attending events at the WYO Theater. She supported her children and grandchildren in their activities, fished, gardened, played sudoku, ranched and farmed. She was a member of the Sheridan Jaycees, a precinct committeewoman for the Republican Party, worked on political campaigns, served on the citizens' advisory board for the Wyoming State Unemployment Division, was an advisory board member for the Sheridan-WYO Rodeo Gold Buckle Club, and served as chairwoman for the Wyoming Matching Endowment Program at Sheridan College. She established the Fletcher Construction Scholarship Fund at Sheridan College, which will be renamed the Susan Patton Fletcher Memorial Fund in honor of her fundraising efforts for the college. She was president of the Sheridan College Foundation board of directors, a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and past president of St. Peter's Altar Guild, member and past president of PEO Chapter AM, and past president of the WYO Theater board. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Amy Bouley and Georgia Boley, and a son, Samuel, all of Sheridan; her parents of Sheridan; three brothers, William "Bill" of Sheridan, John C. "Jack" of Cheyenne, and James "JT" of Saint Cloud, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Stratton of Bozeman; her grandmother, Anna Tovey of Dillon, Mont.; and five grandchildren. Mary L. Harper

Funeral services for Mary L. Harper, 82, of Banner will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be 1-7 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Harper died Thursday, October 18, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Sheridan to Herman and Maud (Skinner) Langheldt. The family moved several times, and she graduated from high school in Big Horn. She graduated from the University of Wyoming, then taught school in Lingle and Thermopolis. She married George Harper on Sept. 28, 1952, in Sheridan. They ranched at Banner. She worked as a chemist at Texaco for 14 years, until 1982. She remained on the ranch until shortly before her death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Banner Women's Club and Big Horn Historical Society. She enjoyed cooking, the mountains and being with her family. Survivors include her husband, of Banner; two sons, Tom of Banner and Bob of Salt Lake City; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters. Memorials may be made to the Banner Women's Club, P.O. Michael C. Zaller

Michael C. Zaller, 43, of Peru, Ill., died Oct. 9, 2007, at his residence. He was father of Hunter and Brianna Zaller of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church in Orwell, Ohio. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. He was a 1982 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell, then served 21 years with the U.S. Navy, retiring in 2004 with a rank of E-8. During his military career, he was a Navy medical diver and manager/supervisor of specialty clinics worldwide. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and spending time with his children. In addition to his two daughters, survivors include a son, Michael Jr. of LaSalle, Ill.; his parents of Orwell; two brothers, Matthew and Mark, both of Orwell; two sisters, Julie Spindler of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Terri Watson of Plymouth Township, Ohio; and his grandmother, Helen Prusinski of Colebrook, Ohio. Courtney Jerome Hugs

Courtney Jerome Hugs, 19, of Hardin, Mont., died Oct. 17, 2007, of injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was the son of Oliver (Shannon) "Hovey" Hugs of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Crow Agency (Mont.) Multipurpose Building. Burial will be in Hardin Fairview Cemetery under direction of Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. He was born Feb. 26, 1988, in Crow Agency to Mr. Hugs and Shelley Schumacher. He was given the Crow name of Iichiil`ehaaleendaakaache (One Among the Horses). He lived in the Hardin area most of his life and attended schools there. He played intermural basketball in junior high. Later he attended the Kicking Horse Job Crops in Ronan, Mont. He was an artist and enjoyed skateboarding, modeling cars and setting up stereo systems. He worked for Flying J and Taco John's. His extended family included his companion, Nancy Cowan. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Midge Venne. In addition to his father, survivors include his mother, Shelley Schumacher Peterson of Hardin; five sisters, Molly White, Zelda and Holly Rae Hugs, Jodi Lee and Heather Blakeman; three brothers, Cody Brown, DJ Weasel Bear and Eugene Red Star; grandparents Paul and Shirley Schumacher, Sonny and Darlene Hugs, Carol Joy, Ted and Peggy Buckley, Scotty Wiseman, Pansy Hugs and Mary Rose Humphrey; and one great-grandmother, Winona Plenty Hoops.

Constance E. Petsoff

Constance E. Petsoff, 82, of Sheridan died Oct. 17, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. A private family service will be in Story. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Petsoff was born July 2, 1925, in Sheridan to Thomas and Lilly (Walls) Demos. She grew up and graduated from high school in Gillette. She lived in Englewood, Colo., for 40 years before returning to Story, then to Sheridan in 2003. She worked for Coca-Cola for many years. She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom. Survivors include two sons, Rick of Sheridan and Randy of Glenridge, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

Joseph William 'Joe' Zowada

Joseph William "Joe" Zowada, 78, of Sheridan died Oct. 18, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial service for the family is planned later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Zowada was born July 19, 1929, to Joseph and Nellie Zowada. He graduated from Sheridan High School and received his bachelor's degree in teaching from Chadron (Neb.) State University. While at Chadron, he was an All-American football player and held the rushing record for 37 years. He married Blanche Dubois. He was a meat cutter and part owner of the Sheridan Inn from 1959-65. He enjoyed hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Diana Hoover of Sheridan; a son, Mike of Pinson, Tenn.; a brother, Larry of Downey, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. F. Minnie (Sturdevant) Hoffman

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday for former Sheridan resident F. Minnie (Sturdevant) Hoffman, 85, of Casper at Sheridan Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Darrell White officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hoffman died Oct. 14, 2007, in the home of a family member. She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Douglas to Commodore Oscar Wysong and Dessie Mabel (McCleery). She was a 1940 graduate of Converse County High School. She married Audra J. Sturdevant on March 25, 1945. He died Feb. 21, 1975. She married George A. Hoffman on June 1, 1977. He died in 1997. Mrs. Hoffman worked at Jersey Creamery in Buffalo and Pamida in Sheridan before going to work for The Sheridan Press for 20 years. She enjoyed reading, watching old movies, and a trip she made to Australia. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth L. Robertson of Australia and James L. Sturdevant of Sheridan; three daughters, Peggy L. Prill of Palmer, Alaska, Ruth A. Graham of Tooele, Utah, and Beverly K. Jackson of Casper; a sister, Betty Minor of Seattle; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

William R. Gaskill

Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Gaskill died Oct. 12, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was born Aug. 24, 1952, in Sheridan to Clarence E. and Thelma (Lee) Gaskill. He grew up and attended schools here and was a 1970 graduate of Sheridan High School. He studied art and photography at Sheridan College. He worked for Carl's IGA before going to work at Wyoming Sawmills, where he had been employed since 1982. He was a planer operator at the time of his death. He enjoyed photography, Sheridan Bronc football and basketball, sports, and spending time with family and friends. Helen L. Anderson

Former Sheridan resident Helen L. Anderson, 78, Mills, died Oct. 13, 2007, in Casper. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Born Sept. 8, 1929, in Cumberland, Wis., to John and Minnie Erickson, she moved with her family to Sheridan at age 9. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1946 and worked several years at KWYO Radio. She married Don Anderson in Sheridan. They moved in 1954 to Casper, where she worked several years at the Chevrolet Dealership, retiring in 1991. Mrs. Anderson enjoyed tending her many varieties of flowers. She also loved her cats, who were her constant companions. Her husband and a sister, Virginia, preceded her in death. Survivors include three children, Jamie McCorkill of Visalia, Calif., Jonni Bauer of Billings, and Don Jr. of Mills; a brother, Kenneth Erickson of Billings; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Paulette “Tina” Von Rueden, 49, died Oct. 13, 2007, in her Sheridan home of cancer. A celebration of life will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Tongue River Canyon. Born March 5, 1958, in Grand Forks, N.D., to James and Moneta (Myrik) Von Rueden, she worked many years for Infiniti Real Estate Co. as regional vice president. She worked in North Dakota and Montana, among other states. She came to Sheridan in 1997 and recently worked for Western Water Consultants. She loved sewing, reading, being with friends, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Lea Von Rueden of Sheridan and Jennifer Dietz of Grand Forks, N.D.; a brother, Paul of Muscatine, Iowa; and four grandchildren. Lois Mecklenburg Smith

Lois Mecklenburg Smith, 90, of Baraboo, Wis., died Oct. 13, 2007, in St. Clair Nursing Home in Baraboo. She was the mother of Kevin Smith of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Notre Dame's Basilica of the Sacred Heart with her son, the Rev. Douglas Smith of Holy Cross at Notre Dame, as celebrant assisted by other Holy Cross priests and clergy. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Viewing and visitation with the family will be one hour before the funeral Mass. Arrangements are with Kaniewski Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Richard J. Mecklenburg and Edna Kronewitter. She worked briefly in Chicago, then at the University of Notre Dame. She married Donald Hall Smith on Oct. 25, 1946. They later lived in South Bend, Ind., and Madison, Wis., before moving to Saint Augustine Beach, Fla., where Mr. Smith died in April 1991. They provided support and encouragement for construction of Christ the King parish church and the foundation of Corpus Christi parish, both in South Bend. Mrs. Smith enjoyed playing softball and golf, was a fan of the former Milwaukee Braves, and enjoyed needlework. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Charles. Survivors include two other sons, Curt of Palatka, Fla., and Daniel of Baraboo; a sister, Rosemary Mikulyuk of South Bend; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Elfriede Ann Raney

Elfriede Ann Raney, 72, of Casper died Oct. 11, 2007, in Glenrock. She is mother of Marie Husman and Earl Raney, both of Sheridan. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today at Newcomers Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Koch of St. Anthony's Church officiating. Mrs. Raney was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Vienna, Austria, to Anton and Katherina (Michalik) Wancura. She graduated from high school and went to beauty college. She married James E. Raney on Sept. 7, 1955, in France. She became an American citizen and enjoyed traveling to Austria every other year to visit her family. A volunteer at Wyoming Medical Center, she enjoyed camping, listening to classical music, spending time with her children and grandchildren, crocheting, knitting and dancing. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leopold and Kurt. Survivors include her husband; two other daughters, Sheila Medow of Casper and Jean Park of Glenrock; another son, Ron of Glenrock; a brother, Anton Wancura; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandsons. Dennis `Denny' Kreger Sr.

Sheridan native Dennis “Denny” Kreger Sr., 60, of Ridgefield, Wash., died Oct. 11, 2007, in his sleep. Services were Monday at Ridgefield Church of the Nazarene. Born to Victor and Mae Kreger, Mr. Kreger was a 1965 graduate of Sheridan High School. He had lived in Ridgefield for 42 years. He was a machinist and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a member of the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Colleen. Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Jackson Kreger; children Dennis Kreger Jr., Tammy Angvall, Laurie Vandermeulen, Shelly Dunn, Jason Kreger, Mathew Jackson, Lynne Jones, Molly Philips and Scott Jackson; and 21 grandchildren. Matthew J. Perkins

Visitation for Matthew J. Perkins, 16, of Banner will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Sheridan High School with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Perkins died Oct. 10, 2007, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was born April 16, 1991, in Sheridan to James and Jane Perkins. He attended Meadowlark Elementary School and Central Junior High School and was a junior in Sheridan High School at the time of his death. He worked at the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center and Sheridan Country Club. In June, he traveled to Europe as one of the Wyoming Music Ambassadors. An avid Packers fan, he was involved in sports throughout his life, including soccer, basketball and Little League baseball. He enjoyed BMX biking, hunting, golf, playing drums at Sheridan High School, being with family and friends, and his dog, McKenzie. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, James Brian, and grandparents Abe and Ann Carlson. Survivors include his parents of Banner; two sisters, Maureen and Anna, both of Sheridan; and three grandparents, James L. and Jan Perkins of Glenview, Ill., and Patricia Hamilton of Goshen, Ind. Roberta Niesley Wright

Former Big Horn resident Roberta Niesley Wright, 86, of Springfield, Vt., died Oct. 7, 2007, in Springfield Hospital. A memorial service will be Tuesday at St. Mark's Church in Springfield. Mrs. Wright was born in Fairview, N.J., to Martha Ott and Adam Walter Niesley. She studied piano and organ at Yale School of Music in New Haven, Conn., for three years. She married Frederick R. Claffee, and they lived in Wilmington, Del. She later married E. Brinton Wright. They lived in Hockessin, Del., before moving to Big Horn, where they raised Thoroughbreds on their Yellow Bird Ranch in the 1970s and '80s. They later moved to Vero Beach, Fla. Mr. Wright died in 1997. Mrs. Wright was a founding member of the Mountain States Combined Training Association and member of the Rocky Mountain Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council. Survivors include two daughters, Gail Claffee Wood of Coutras, France, and Lori Claffee Kuch of Springfield; a son, David Wright of Lafayette, Colo.; a stepson, E. Brinton Wright of Vero Beach; two grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. Lisa Marie Eichler, 41, of Sheridan died in her sleep Oct. 2, 2007, while visiting Rapid City. Funeral services were Tuesday in Riverside Cemetery in Cody. A memorial service is planned later in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Eichler was born Sept. 15, 1966, in New Brunswick, N.J. Betty Gatlin

Betty Gatlin, 83, of Broadus, Mont., died Oct. 6, 2007, at her residence. She was mother of Linda Trimmer of Sheridan. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by private burial in Valley View Cemetery in Broadus. Mrs. Gatlin was born Oct. 24, 1923, to Hans and Lizzie Peterson in Miles City, Mont. She attended the Sonnette rural school and Broadus high school. She married Grant Gatlin on Nov. 1, 1941. While Mr. Gatlin served in the Navy during World War II, Mrs. Gatlin lived with her parents at Sonnette and helped on the ranch. After the war, she and her husband spent a year in Valdez, Alaska, where he worked on a fishing boat. They returned from Alaska and worked on various ranches in southeastern Montana and later operated the Corral Bar in Birney, Mont. After Mr. Gatlin was elected Powder River County sheriff, Mrs. Gatlin worked as jail cook and, later, dispatcher for the sheriff's office, without pay for the first years until the county hired her. After her husband's tenure as sheriff ended, she worked at the IGA Bakery. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Gary and Ward, both of Broadus; two other daughters, Judy Badgett of Billings and Jeanne Sparks of Broadus; a sister, Helen Bickle of Broadus; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Wallace “Wally” Jackson, 83, of Salem, Ore., died Oct. 3, 2007, in Salem. A memorial service was Friday in Salem. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford, Ore. Mr. Jackson was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Harvey and Helen Jackson. He moved to Sheridan in 1940. He moved in 1979 to Salem, where he owned and operated Fir Grove Mobile Home Park. He married Betty Woodcock on Aug. 25, 1979. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include his children, Gale of Casper, Darold of Idaho and Jim of North Carolina; three stepdaughters, Louise LaFon of Oregon, Marilyn Igo of Washington and Beverly McLean of New York; a sister, Cody Kelly of Idaho; a brother, Rex of Washington; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Former Sheridan resident Charles Wayne McKenzie, 41, died Sept. 30, 2007, at his Rock Springs home. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home, Pastor Chuck Lucas officiating. Born May 4, 1966, in Sheridan to Victoria Mitchell, Mr. McKenzie attended school here and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1985. He resided in Rock Springs for the past 15 years and worked as a pipe fitter for Solvay Minerals. He most enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Kiley, and also camping, fishing, art, four-wheeling, motorcycling, and Cloud Peak Reservoir. Survivors include his daughter, Kiley Kristine McKenzie of Sheridan; his mother, Victoria Sarokon of Story; a sister, Christi McKenzie Clark of Puyallup, Wash.; and four grandparents, Kenny and Jessie Mitchell of Sheridan and Dick and Betty McKenzie of Big Horn. Born Feb. 23, 1958, in Gillette to Philip and Katherine Harris, he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1976 and worked as a draftsman for Peter Kiewit. Mr. Harris was a member of the 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Corps. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially bow-hunting. Survivors include his mother, Katherine Maasch; five siblings, Mikealena Olson of Sheridan, Roxanne Schuppe, Elizabeth Harlson, and Jon Harris, all of Billings, and Patrick Harris of St. Mary, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Claude F. Stevenson, 96, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home. Burial of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Al Badgett officiating. Mr. Stevenson died Sept. 28, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born March 5, 1911, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Charles Robert and Emma Marie Stevenson. He married Elizabeth Madson on Dec. 13, 1931, in Northwood, Iowa. She died in 1977. Mr. Stevenson worked in the printing business in Northwood, Washington, D.C., and Bozeman, Mont., before moving to Sheridan. He worked for The Sheridan Press and the Mills Co. After retiring from the Mills Co., he worked on special projects for Sheridan Printing and was the last Linotype operator in Sheridan. For several years after retiring, he spent summers managing the gardens at Eatons' Ranch. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Big Horn Mountains, photography and travel. He was a Mason, a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite, and a member of the Kalif Shrine and Kalif Oriental Band. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Kruse; a daughter, Kathryn; and a grandson. Survivors include his son, David G. of Sheridan; one granddaughter; four step-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kalif Shrine Endowment Fund, 145 W. Jay D. Harris, 49, of Sheridan died Oct. 1, 2007, at his residence. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Memorials may be made to an outdoor charity of the donor's choice.

 

Charles Wayne McKenzie

Former Sheridan resident Charles Wayne McKenzie, 41, of Rock Springs died Oct. 1, 2007. Cause of death has not been determined. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Jane Holler

Private graveside committal of cremains is planned for Jane Holler, 83, of Sheridan. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Holler died Sept. 30, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Born July 14, 1924, in Sheridan, she grew up and graduated from high school here. She worked at Eatons' Dude Ranch after high school. She married Rusty Holler in 1945. They worked on the Gregg Ranch on Little Goose Creek. In 1948, they moved to the 60 Bar Ranch north of Gillette, where they spent the next 40 years. They retired and moved back to Sheridan in 1987. Mr. Holler died Sept. 5, 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Holler of Billings. Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Stella E. Davis

Funeral services for Stella E. Davis, 88, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with George Tellez officiating. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Davis died Sept. 28, 2007, at her residence. She was born May 11, 1919, in Dietz to Gregary “Gus” and Anna (Bartis) Kumor. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and was a 1938 graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Howard W. Davis on Dec. 23, 1943, in San Francisco. While in San Francisco, she worked in a drug store. She later worked at the Cloverleaf Bakery and Eventide (Sheridan Manor) in Sheridan. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Does and was a past member of Kendrick Golf Association. She enjoyed gardening, artwork, playing golf, camping and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Micheal John; two brothers; and five sisters. Survivors include another son, Fred of Sheridan; two daughters, Jennifer Johnson of Sheridan and Sandy Kinnaird of Banner; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
