Joseph 'Joe' Legerski

Funeral services for Joseph "Joe" Legerski, 90, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mr. Legerski died Sept. 25, 2007, at his residence. He was born Feb. 4, 1917, in Acme to George Paul and Mary (Kawulok) Legerski. He was a lifelong resident of the Sheridan area. He married Agnes H. Kawulok on Nov. 21, 1937, in the old Immanuel Lutheran Church on Park Street. He was a coal miner, working at Monarch and, later, Big Horn Coal until 1979, when he retired. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, gardening and drives in the country. He also enjoyed the mountains, horses, old cars, socializing with friends, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a life member of United Mine Workers Local 2055. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, George, Paul and John; and five sisters, Anna Krenzelok, Mary Pelesky, Agnes Fletcher, Eva Bury and Rose Buszkiewic. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dave, Robert and William, all of Sheridan; three brothers, Frank and Ted of Sheridan and Tony of Riverton; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a recipient of the donor's choice.

Carolyn Swenson

Former Sheridan resident Carolyn Swenson, 69, of Gillette died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home with burial in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Swenson was born Dec. 24, 1937, to Clarence and Helen (Mitzel) Wilhelm in Billings. She married Thomas E. Price Sr. in 1954. They lived in Billings and later divorced. She married Wesley Swenson Sr. on Nov. 29, 1970, in Lovell. They later moved to St. Xavier, Mont., where Mrs. Swenson enjoyed canning vegetables and fruits and raising purebred collies. The family moved to Ashland, Mont., in 1978, where Mrs. Swenson and her husband worked for a coal mine. They moved to Gillette in 1984, later moved to Sheridan, then returned to Gillette. Mrs. Swenson worked as a waitress for many years and collected signature plates and Disney movies. She enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley music and dancing. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Tom Price and Wesley Swenson Jr., both of Gillette, and Kem Price of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Cassandra Aileen Owens

Former Sheridan resident Cassandra Aileen Owens, 22, of Craig, Colo., died at her home Sept. 15, 2007, of cancer. Funeral services were Sept. 19 at First Christian Church with burial in Craig Cemetery under direction of Grant Mortuary. She was born June 27, 1985, in Craig to Ray and Cyndee (Schulze) Owens. She grew up in Craig and was a 2003 graduate of Moffat County High School, where she was a member of the soccer and swim teams. She also belonged to Key Club and National Honor Society and volunteered at Joyful Noisemakers and other church youth activities. She majored in communications at Montana State University-Billings, where she attended two years before taking off a year to live and work in Casper and Sheridan as a waitress. She returned to MSU-Billings and finished the spring semester with a 3.5 grade-point average while undergoing chemotherapy. She enjoyed all crafts, shopping in thrift stores, and spending time outdoors, especially hunting with her father and brothers. She collected bottles and made picture montages and script lettering. Survivors, all of Craig, include her parents; two brothers, Caleb and Chayton; and her grandparents, George and Sharon Durham and Dee and Iris Owens. Memorials may be made to the Cassie Owens Scholarship fund at the Bank of Colorado in Craig or at Grant Mortuary.

Maxine Elliott

Former Sheridan resident Maxine Elliott, 87, of Eugene, Ore., died Sept. 16, 2007, in Grandview Rehabilitation and Specialty Care in Junction City, Ore. Graveside services will be later in Oregon. Mrs. Elliott was born June 20, 1920, in Sheridan to Thomas and Maudie Cotton. She grew up and attended school here. She married Walter Elliott on March 21, 1943, in Yuma, Ariz. She lived in Santa Ana and Torrance, Calif., before moving to Saudi Arabia in 1957, where Mr. Elliott worked as an aircraft mechanic. She returned to the United States in 1963, living in Myrtle Point, Ore., before moving to Eugene in 1970. She enjoyed travel, dancing and participating in organizations. She was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Willamette Valley Chapter Group, Irvine Grange and First Christian Church of Eugene. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. Survivors include a son, Jack of Sheridan; and one grandson. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Research Center, Mayo Clinic, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905.

 

Robert R. `Rob' Rogers

Former Sheridan resident Robert R. “Rob” Rogers, 43, of Cheyenne died Sept. 23, 2007, of natural causes in Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Vigil will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. Mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. Bill Hill as celebrant. Mr. Rogers was born Nov. 1, 1963 in Denver to Ranger and Rowena Emery Rogers. He lived in Sheridan before moving to Cheyenne five years ago. He was a federal public defender and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Wyoming Bar Association and the Cheyenne Soccer Association. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include a son, James MacGregor “Mac” Rogers of Cheyenne; his mother of Parker, Colo.; and five sisters, Susan Rogers Livenick of Las Vegas, Jeanette Rogers of New Haven, Conn., Roxana Rogers DeSole of South Africa, Lorna Rogers Burgess of Norwood, Colo., and Sarah Blythe Rogers of Boulder, Colo.

Merrill George Nay

Memorial services for Merrill George Nay, 87, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, followed by a commitment service with military honors in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Nay died Sept. 20, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. He was born July 1, 1920, in Richfield, Utah, to Shirl and Ella Nay. He graduated from Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant, Utah, and enlisted in the Navy. He served in the South Atlantic during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism. He married Virginia Erickson; she died in 1984. He married Ruth Schreibeis on March 7, 1987. Mr. Nay was construction supervisor for N.A. Nelson Construction for 38 years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling in a recreational vehicle, motorcycling, family picnics and spending time with family and friends. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Judy Joy, Jan Winkler and Sue Spencer; two stepchildren, Barbara Blaney and Irv Blaney, both of South Dakota; a sister, Sue Brudvig of California; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Betty Thompson

Betty Thompson, 82, of Alliance, Neb., died Sept. 17, 2007, in Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. She was mother of Randy Thompson of Sheridan. Memorial services were Friday in Alliance. Mrs. Thompson was born May 14, 1925, in Edgemont, S.D., to William and Esther Rounds. She had lived in Alliance for 60 years. She was director of the Alliance Nutrition Center and founder of the Swingin' Seniors singing group. She was named the Alliance Times-Herald's 2005 Person of the Year. She worked for 35 years as a hairdresser. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the Rebekahs, Good Sam Camping Club, Burlington Northern Camping Club and the Red Hat Society. She was past president of the Eagles Auxiliary and B.P.O. Does. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A.; her twin brother, Bill; and a sister, Pearl. In addition to her son, survivors include a daughter, Penny Thompson of Alliance; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Ruff

Memorial services for Kenneth Ruff, 87, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Mr. Ruff died Sept. 13, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. He was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Sheridan to David A. and Jennie Symons Ruff. He grew up and graduated from high school here. He married Betty MacCatherine in Sheridan on Aug. 2, 1941. He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked for Mountain Bell for 42 years, until Jan. 18, 1982, when he retired. He was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America, an honorary life member of Communication Workers of America, and a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He was also a member of Kalif Shrine Temple and a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife and one grandson. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy R. Fowkes of Danville, Calif.; two sons, David K. of Sheridan and James B. of Longmont, Colo.; a sister, Leona R. Businga of Winnebago, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Nelson M. Crider

Nelson M. Crider, 47, of Sheridan died Sept. 14, 2007, in his residence of apparent natural causes. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Crider was born May 7, 1960, in Sheridan to Dr. John and Marilyn (Weber) Crider. He grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan and worked on area ranches. He served in the Wyoming National Guard for four years. He graduated and received certification as a farrier from Oregon State Farrier School, then returned to Sheridan, where he worked shoeing horses and as a carpenter for several construction companies. He enjoyed dancing. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, John A.; and his twin brother, Neal. Survivors include his mother of Sheridan; three brothers, Michael, Kyle and Kelly, all of Sheridan; and a sister, Karen Grimes of Jackson. Edna Mae Heavey

Edna Mae Heavey, 83, of Sheridan died Aug. 30, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Inurnment of her cremains will be in the family plot in Cody. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ms. Heavey was born June 5, 1924, to Ed and Estelle Heavey. Because of disabilities, she was cared for at home until age 18, when she moved to the Lander Training School. She moved to Rehabilitation Enterprises of North Eastern Wyoming in 1993 and lived in the Sheridan Avenue Group Home until her death. She was preceded in death by four sisters and a baby brother.

Jeffrey Fairbank

A private family memorial service for Jeffrey Fairbank, 49, of Sheridan will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Fairbank died Sept. 9, 2007, at his residence of natural causes. Cremation has taken place. He was born Oct. 5, 1957, in Rapid City to Glenn and June Fairbank. He was a 1976 graduate of Sheridan High School and a 1993 graduate of Western Wyoming Community College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in respiratory therapy. He made the President's Honor Roll while attending the community college. He worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, Ore., and Lincare. He was employed by Sheridan VA Medical Center at the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by a son, Chris, and a brother, David. Survivors include a son, Adam of Sheridan; his parents of Sheridan; siblings Barbara Bennick of Sheridan, Glenn of Bonner Springs, Kan., Jeri Bagley of Henderson, Nev., and Dan of Sutcliffe, Nev.; and three grandchildren.

Edward F. Wattenberg

Private family services for Edward F. Wattenberg, 77, of Sheridan will be later under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Wattenberg died Sept. 7, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born May 9, 1930, in Sheridan to Edward and Erma (Williams) Wattenberg. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Winston during the Korean War. After service, he returned to Sheridan. He married Wanda Eversull on Dec. 27, 1954. They operated the family dairy farm south of Sheridan until 1975, then Mr. Wattenberg delivered mail for a few years until the family moved to Thermopolis. He retired in 1996 and returned to Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was preceded in death by a son, Myron; a sister, Ella Mae; and a brother, Robert. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Erma Jean Claflin and Edna Mae Wattenberg, both of Sheridan; and one grandson.

Mary Agnes (Marron) Charles

Graveside services for Sheridan native Mary Agnes (Marron) Charles, 93, of Redding, Calif., will be Friday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Service time has not been decided, according to the family. Mrs. Charles died Aug. 26, 2007, at her residence. Mass of Christian Burial was in Redding on Aug. 31. Mrs. Charles was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Sheridan to Rose (Rodgers) Marron McCarthy and John Bernard Marron. She graduated from Holy Name School and Sheridan High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin E. Charles, and a brother, John Thomas Marron. Survivors include two sons, Tom of Shasta, Calif., and Jim of Scio, Ore.; and a brother, Bernard Marron of Sheridan.

John C. Barker Sr.

Funeral services for John C. Barker Sr., 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. Burial will be in Dayton Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Barker died Sept. 5, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 14, 1920, to Edwin and Matilda (Klinkosh) Barker on the family ranch near Parkman. He attended the Little Blue School on Barker Road and graduated from Sheridan High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, then served in the Army under Gen. Patton in Italy and Germany during World War II. After the war, he returned to the family ranch. He married Patricia Walker in 1954. They divorced. He married Annis Rideout in 1958. She died in 1996. Mr. Barker worked in construction for Peter Kiewit and helped build Interstates 90 and 25. He also worked 25 years for Big Horn Coal. He moved to Ranchester in 1987, then to Sheridan in 2003. He was a life member of Eagles No. 186, a member of the Catholic Church, and a member and past state commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ed, in 2006. Survivors include two sons, John Jr. of Ranchester and Ed of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a sister, Louise Wilson of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Julia Demchok Hansen

Sheridan County native Julia Demchok Hansen, 91, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Sept. 4, 2007, in Northern Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Friday in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth under direction of Greenwood Funeral Home. Mrs. Hansen was born April 20, 1916, to John and Maria Virostko Demchok. The family homesteaded in the Dutch Creek area near Sheridan. She married Hans Hansen, and the couple made their home in Fort Worth. Mr. Hansen died in 1971.

 

Jamie Marie Fancher

Sheridan native Jamie Marie Fancher, 30, of Gillette died Sept. 3, 2007, at her residence of natural causes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Family Life Church with Pastor Martin Crump officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mrs. Fancher was born Dec. 17, 1976, in Sheridan to Roger Goodman and Helen Beach. She was a 1995 graduate of Arvada-Clearmont High School. She married Andrew “Andy” Fancher on May 1, 2004, and the couple made their home in Gillette. She was employed by Blue Ribbon Mortgage for more than four years as a loan processor. She was completing her business degree at Gillette College at the time of her death. She enjoyed dirt biking and camping with her family, watching her sons play sports, and playing volleyball. An avid runner, she recently completed her first half-marathon in Spearfish Canyon with a time of one hour, 57 minutes and seven seconds. Survivors include her husband and two sons, Ian and Lane Voiles, all of Gillette; her mother of Tucson, Ariz.; her father of Colstrip, Mont.; siblings Jason Goodman, Kim Kretschman, Kelli O'Loughlin, Josh Goodman and LeeAnn Goodman; and one grandmother, Betty Beach of Sheridan. Goldie Kistler

Private family services for Goldie Kistler, 87, of Sheridan will be later under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kistler died Sept. 4, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born May 17, 1920, in Watertown, S.D., to Russell and Leah (Fisher) Bell. She grew up in South Dakota and graduated from high school in Mitchell, S.D. She married Keith Kistler in 1945 in South Dakota. They lived in California until they moved to Sheridan in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and puzzles. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Lightner. Survivors include two sons, Roger of Sheridan and Ed of Roseville, Calif.; a daughter, Shelley McEvoy of Isabella, Mo.; a brother, Richard Bell of Gillette; two sisters, Violet Ferreira of San Diego and Tiney Lutz of Dickson, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Maxon Paul Baker

Funeral liturgy for Maxon Paul Baker, 87, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Viewing is 1-5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Baker died Sept. 3, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1920, in Ogden, Utah, to Henry and Alice (Simpson) Baker. He grew up in the Buffalo/Sheridan area and attended schools in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1942, received the Good Conduct Medal in 1945, and was discharged in 1946. He married Rose Polito on July 13, 1947, in Sheridan. He worked at Sheridan Flour Mill and the Mills Co. After retiring, he helped transport vehicles for Avis. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Janus Powell of Ranchester; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Holy Name School, 9 S. Connor St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Dorothy Newcomer

Dorothy Newcomer, 87, of Sheridan died Sept. 3, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Newcomer was born Aug. 8, 1920, to Charles and Vera Hebard. She was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck Hebard. Survivors include two sons, Charlie of Sheridan and Bob of Howard City, Mich.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Shell died Sept. 2, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born April 18, 1922, to LeRoy and Blanche (Minion) Bliss in a tent-cabin on the family homestead near Ucross. She attended elementary school at Ucross and was a 1940 graduate of Clearmont High School. She participated in gymnastics, basketball and on the speech team in high school. She married Lewis W. Shell in 1942 in Hardin, Mont. The couple worked on area ranches for a number of years. During World War II, when there was a shortage of help, she drove a horse-drawn buck rake in the hay fields. She was the cook at many of the ranches, and cooked for two years at the Copper Kettle in Sheridan. She also worked in the office at Goar's Shoe Store starting in 1968, then for the Perkins Foundation until 1984, when she retired. She enjoyed creating art, mainly oils and pen-and-ink, along with knitting, needle crafts, cooking and canning. She was a member of Big Horn Women's Club, Big Goose Women's Club, Sheridan Artist Guild and the Business and Professional Women's Association. She was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Hart, a brother, Alfred, and two half brothers, LeRoy and Jack Neimier. Survivors include her husband; two sons, LeRoy of Sheridan and Jim of Buffalo; a daughter, Ardath Lunbeck of Story; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

Maxon P. Baker

Maxon P. Baker, 87, of Sheridan died Sept. 3, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Edward N. Green

Funeral services for Edward N. Green, 66, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 will host a celebration of life reception following the services. Viewing will be 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Green died Sept. 2, 2007, in Billings Clinic Hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Sheridan to Harry and Louise (Johnston) Green. He graduated from high school in Sheridan and enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed in Korea and returned to Sheridan after his service. He married Vikki Jones on June 20, 1964, in Sheridan. He worked as a barber for several years before joining the Sheridan Fire Department. He rose to the rank of captain before retiring in 1995 after 26 years of service. He then drove a school bus for several years. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Sheridan County Sportsmen's Association, Wyoming Muzzleloading Association, Sheridan Bull Shooter's Club, National Rifle Association, National Muzzleloading Association, the YMCA, and International Association of Firefighters Local 276. An avid NASCAR fan, he also enjoyed playing cribbage, cooking, riding his Harley, horseback riding, hunting and other outdoor activities, and being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis. Survivors include his wife; a son, John, and daughter, Lora Smith, both of Sheridan; three brothers, Gary, Snook and Bob, all of Sheridan; and four grandchildren. Kenneth Dewitt `Ken' Jackson

Kenneth Dewitt “Ken” Jackson, 86, of Banner died Sept. 2, 2007, in Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Little Big Horn National Cemetery in Crow Agency, Mont., with the Rev. Fabian Fehring officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Columbia City, Ind., to Heber and Susie Jackson. He was a 1939 graduate of Columbia City High School. He joined the U.S. Army in December 1942 and served in the Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Indiana. He married Marjorie Burke in 1948 in Yuma, Ariz., and they eventually made their home in Gillette, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Mrs. Jackson died in September 1968. Mr. Jackson lived in Longmont, Colo., briefly before returning to Gillette. He retired in 1982 and built a house in Banner, where he lived after its completion in 1984. He was a member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. An avid woodworker and cabinetmaker, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and the mountains. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha, and a brother, Benjamin. Survivors include two sons, Burke of Cheyenne and Jerry of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Mathews of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Gladys I. Shillingstad

Gladys I. Shillingstad, 85, of Buffalo died Aug. 30, 2007, in a nursing home in Buffalo. She was sister of Rodney Reel of Sheridan. Visitation is 1-3 p.m. today at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Shillingstad was born Dec. 5, 1921, at the family ranch at Four Horse, southwest of Moorcroft, to Virgil and Agnes (Johnson) Reel. She moved to Rapid City in 1960 and resided there until moving to Buffalo to be closer to her niece. She enjoyed family, camping, and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lawrence and Roy; and three sisters, Irene DeWolff, Phyllis Siefken and Virginia Husted. Survivors include another brother, Damond Reel of Rapid City; and two sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Christenson of Kansas and Jean Saunders of Rapid City. A memorial has been established to benefit Alzheimer's research.

 

Dorothy Hockert

Funeral services for Dorothy Hockert, 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, Ind. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home, with Allen Funeral Home handling arrangements in Indiana. Mrs. Hockert died Aug. 29, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Sept. 3, 1920, to Gilbert and Myrtle Rowe in Terre Haute, Ind. She finished high school and earned a bachelor's degree. She married Chester Hockert in Terre Haute on Dec. 29, 1942. She volunteered many hours in community service, including leadership and volunteer positions with the Indiana University Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Friends of Music of Indiana University, Community Foundation of Morgan County (Ind.) and Trinity Episcopal Church. An avid, award-winning gardener, she also enjoyed travel, golf and bridge and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three children, Janet Shepherd and Robert Hockert, both of Gillette, and Richard Hockert of Dallas; two sisters, Esther Smith of La Jolla, Calif., and Rose Thompson of Banning, Calif.; a brother, Gilbert Rowe of Grand Rapids, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mary Lou Cahill

Mary Lou Cahill, 79, of Woonsocket, S.D., died Aug. 31, 2007, in Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. She was mother of Lori Strandholm of Sheridan. Funeral services were this morning in St. Wilfrid's Catholic Church in Woonsocket. Burial was in St. Wilfrid's Catholic Cemetery under direction of Basham Funeral Chapel of Woonsocket. Mrs. Cahill was born May 20, 1928, in Wessington Springs, S.D., to Nick and Blanche (Jobe) Anton. She was a 1946 graduate of Wessington Springs High School and attended South Dakota State University and St. Theresa's College in Winona, Minn. She married Patrick Cahill on May 29, 1950, in Wessington Springs. She worked for the Farmer's Home Administration, the grocery store in Wessington Springs, and as deputy in the offices of the Sanborn County treasurer, register of deeds and clerk of courts. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, Modernaires Craft Club, American Legion Auxiliary and various other community organizations. She enjoyed gardening, ceramics, sewing, camping, baseball, fishing and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael. Survivors include three sons, Dr. William Cahill of Huron, S.D., Dan of Oceanside, Calif., and Tom of Burfordville, Mo.; three other daughters, Kim Chambers of Butte, Mont., Lynn Brueske of Woonsocket and Kari Stulken of Pierre, S.D.; two brothers, Richard Anton of Rapid City and David Anton of Fresno, Calif.; two sisters, Bernadine Bjorkman of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Margaret Segovia of Honomu, Hawaii; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

 

Ralph William Oaks Jr.

Ralph William Oaks Jr., 57, of Sheridan died Aug. 26, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Oaks was born May 11, 1950, to Ralph W. and Margaret A. Oaks Sr. in Battle Creek, Mich. He graduated from Woodland Park High School in Sheridan and served in Vietnam with the Navy. He also later served with the Coast Guard. He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Debra. Survivors include his mother; a son, Clayton of Kokomo, Ind.; two sisters, Linda Smith and Chris Burns, both of Canon City, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

 

Saul Oscar Larson Jr.

Saul Oscar Larson Jr., 81, of Sheridan died Aug. 31, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. A memorial service will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Larson was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Ashland, Wis., to Saul Oscar and Lottie Lois (Cornwall) Larson Sr. The family moved to Shoshoni when he was 12. He received a pharmacy degree from the University of Wyoming and owned and operated City Rexall Drug in Thermopolis until 2001, when he retired. He was an inpatient at Sheridan VAMC. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott Owen Larson. Survivors include his wife, Albert Jene Larson of Thermopolis; three daughters, Catherine Rush of Thermopolis, Sharon Fink of Issaquah, Wash., and Laree Earl of Long Island, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

BUFFALO — James Fredrick Dillinger Jr., 85, of Buffalo died Sept. 2, 2007, at his residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with his family as officiants. Douglas `Jim Palser'

A reception in celebration of the life of Douglas "Jim" Palser, 56, of Sheridan will be 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday at the Knights of Columbus hall. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Palser died Aug. 29, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was born April 23, 1951, in Greeley, Colo., to Dale and Louise (Burger) Palser. He grew up and graduated from high school in Kimball, Neb., and attended college in Kearney, Neb. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He married Emma Lasala on March 30, 1973, in the Philippines. After service, he lived in Vernal, Utah, and Hanna before coming to Sheridan in the late 1970s. He worked for Kiewit then at Decker Coal until the 1988 strike, when he attended nursing school and became a registered nurse. He worked for Kiewit for more than 35 years. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed the mountains, hunting, and being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rick; and a sister, Linda. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gwen Palser of Bozeman, Mont., and Jennifer Palser of Sheridan; a brother, Eddie of Spring, Texas; a sister, Glenna Reed of Sheridan; and two granddaughters.

 

Grace Estelle Williams

BUFFALO — Grace Estelle Williams, 100, of Buffalo died Aug. 30, 2007, in Amie Holt Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Union Congregational Church with the Rev.
