Cody Sisco, 23, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 28, in Cheyenne due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Viewing will be 8 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating.

 

Loden ‘Bill’ Sollars

Loden "Bill" Sollars, 87, of Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Charles E. Catron, 67, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 5 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Per Mr. Catron’s request, attire should be casual.

 

George W. Harrison

George W. Harrison, 90, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Memorial services by the family will be 1 p.m. Friday at Church of Christ, 1769 Big Horn Ave., with interment of cremains to follow with military honors in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

 

Beverly F. Barber

Beverly F. Barber, 86, of Ranchester, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services are 7 p.m. Wednesday at Big Horn Church with Pastor Sherman Weberg officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born May 28, 1922, in Homestead, Mont., to Ora and Nora (Casperson) Fleishman, she grew up in Montana and graduated from high school in Froid, Mont. She moved to Los Angeles and graduated from business college. She married Ray Rahn on Oct. 14, 1940, in California. They owned and operated Rahn Bros. Printing for many years until they retired. Mr. Rahn died in 1991. In 1993, she married Don Barber in California. He died in 1994. She moved to Ranchester in 1999 to be near her family. She was a member of Big Horn Church. Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include her sister, LaVerne Weberg of Sheridan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Big Horn Church Mission Fund, Box 212, Big Horn, WY 82833.

 

Donald L. Graham

Donald L. Graham, 73, of Hanna died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Private family committal service will be later in Laurel, Mont. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born March 22, 1935, in Sheridan to Virgil and Hazel (Wile) Graham, he attended school in Sheridan. He married Doris Hauf in Sheridan in 1953. They lived in several areas while he worked in road construction. They later divorced. Mr. Graham married Helen Whiteaker in 1962 in Billings, where they lived while he worked as a welder and owned and operated a gas station. Mrs. Graham died in 1984. He moved to Colorado, then Hanna, where he worked at the mine. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and listening to music. Survivors include five sons, Dennis Brunson of Ranchester, Duane Brunson of Sheridan, Joel Pearson and Donald Graham Jr. of Billings, and Dallas Graham of Musselshell, Mont.; five daughters, Debbie Pilcher, Dena Champlin-Wardle and Deanne Hines, all of Sheridan, Taunya Straight of Billings, and Sandra Crane of Musselshell; a brother, Bert Graham of New Mexico; a sister, Cora Sobotka of Cheyenne; 22 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pearl Mae Crookshanks

Pearl Mae Crookshanks, 89, of Sheridan, formerly of Big Horn County and Hardin, Mont., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, in Sheridan. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Sugarland Ridge Assisted Living Center in Sheridan with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Bullis Funeral Chapel in Hardin. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Birney, Mont., to Halvor and Karen Pedersen Kirkemo, she grew up and received her early education in Decker, Mont., graduating from Sheridan High School in 1937. She worked at Eatons’ Ranch in Wolf and in 1939 for the Ben Franklin store in Hardin. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1940, where she was employed by the U.S. Army at the Pentagon. She retired in 1970 after 30 years of service and moved to Hardin until 2006, when she moved to Sheridan. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Alpha Rebekah Lodge No. 96, Hardin Senior Citizens, and the Big Horn County Museum and Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, and her passion was dogs and cats. She was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher Kirkemo; and two sisters, Helen Tetschner and Gloria Robbins. Survivors include a brother, Harold Kirkemo of Belgrade, Mont.; and numerous nieces and a nephew. Memorials may benefit the Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801 or the Big Horn County Historical Museum in Hardin.

David Bradley Roberts

David Bradley Roberts, 42, of Rawlins, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. He was the son of John Roberts, the stepson of Shirley Roberts, and the brother of David Baxter, all of Sheridan. A memorial gathering will be 2 p.m. today at the Elks Lodge in Rawlins. Mr. Roberts was born April 9, 1966, in Woodstock, Ill., to John and Rosaleen (McCann) Roberts. He married Beverly J. Dobkins Jan. 8, 1999, in Rawlins. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Robert Ferguson. In addition to his father, stepmother, and brother, Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife; his mother, Rosaleen Ferguson of Hanna; three children, Zachary Roberts of Cheyenne, and Aaron Steel and Ashley Steele, both of Rawlins; three sisters, Margaret Storer of New Mexico, Melissa Donough of Hanna, and Lisa Gilbertson of Billings; and a cousin. Arrangements are with Rostad Mortuary of Rawlins.

Della Mae Pederson

Della Mae (Volk) Pederson, 65, of Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. Viewing will be 2-4 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, 1959 E. Brundage Lane, with Pastor Sherman Weberg officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born May 2, 1943, in Rugby, N.D., to Mike and Stella Volk, she graduated from Towner High School in 1961 and went on to attend cosmetology school that year in Billings. She married Kenneth Pederson on June 30, 1962, in Fulda, Pierce County, N.D. She worked as the second cook at Coffeen School from 1978 to 1995, when she retired. Mrs. Pederson enjoyed attending church, hosting Bible studies in her home, playing games, cooking (especially for holidays with her family), having company drop in, shopping, taking drives, and monthly luncheons with friends. She was known as a faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Allen O’Dell. Survivors include four daughters, Deborah O’Dell, Nancy Grover, Pamela Hilling and Loni O’Dell, all of Sheridan; a son, Kenneth R. Jr. of Gillette; five siblings, Harlan Volk, Mary Lou Ronglien, Geraldine Meyer, Dennis Volk and Terry Volk; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Sheridan Community Federal Credit Union, 141 S. Gould St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

 

Robert Arthur Johnson

Robert Arthur Johnson, 83, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a battle against Parkinson’s disease. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Born Jan. 10, 1925, in Manville to homesteader parents Reuben and Mabel (Carlisle) Johnson, he attended Carbon Black School in Lance Creek for most of his early school years and graduated from Manville High School in 1944. He married Francis Taylor on June 1, 1947, on the Taylor home place on the Divide in Lusk. He worked with his father and brothers on the home place in Lance Creek and for Continental Oil Co. After moving the family to Lusk, he worked for Rancher’s Feed Service. The couple moved the family to Sheridan in 1970, where he worked as a milk truck driver for Jersey Creamery, then in maintenance at Sheridan Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, the couple joined the Mobile Missions Assistance Program and enjoyed traveling the United States for nine years. When health interfered with their MMAP work, they became Senior Companions with the Sheridan Senior Center. Mr. Johnson continued that work until he moved to Sheridan Manor in July. An active member of First Baptist Church for 38 years, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He looked forward to the many Johnson family reunions. He loved to tinker and was known for always having a home-improvement project in the works. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Donald; and one sister, Florence. He is survived by his wife; a sister, Maxine Miller of Casper; four sons, Larry of Esterbrook, Ronald of Douglas, Rex of Delta, Colo., and Keith of Cody; two daughters Merna Dodd of Miles City, Mont., and Anita Walker of Casper; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorials  may be made to First Baptist Church or Sheridan Senior Center. The family also requests written memories of Mr. Johnson be sent to his wife to be compiled in a memorial book.

Carla J. Engdahl, 56, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Sheridan Manor after a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Monica A. Harrington

Monica A. Harrington, 70, of Sheridan, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Per her request, cremation has taken place. Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Felix Martinito officiating. Born April 29, 1938, in Winner, S.D., to John and Margaret (Tappe) Ruhkamp, she grew up in Winner and Witten, S.D. She married Lloyd Harrington on Oct. 26, 1955, in Winner. Mr. Harrington was in the U.S. Air Force, and together they were stationed in numerous locations including the Panama Canal Zone and Puerto Rico. They retired in 1972 to make Sheridan their home. Mrs. Harrington enjoyed spending time with her family, taking trips to Deadwood, S.D., with her husband, playing bingo with friends, gardening, crafts and reading. She was preceded in death by a son, Doug, and four brothers. Survivors include her husband; four children, Linda Mitchell and Kelly Thompson, both of Sheridan, Dean of Ranchester, and Mary Hagaman of Fremont, Neb.; four siblings, Noel Ruhkamp of Blaire, Neb., Jean Ruhkamp of Havre, Mont., Frances Wheeler of Fort Collins, Colo., and Berniece Harter of Winner; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mansel C. Johnston

Mansel C. Johnston, 87, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor George Snyder officiating. Born Nov. 9, 1920, in Sheridan to Arthur and Josephine Johnston, he was raised on the Johnston family ranch on Lower Prairie Dog Road. He married Thelma Seamster on Aug. 7, 1946, in Hardin, Mont. They lived on and worked the Johnston ranch until 1984. In addition, he worked at Big Horn Coal Co. for 32 years, including the underground mine for two years. The couple owned and bartended at the Montana Club from 1969 until 1978. During retirement, he enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, and a sister, Clotene Graham. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Don Bloxom and Mansel Jr., both of Dayton, and Art of Cody; a daughter, Linda Johnston Howe of Sheridan, a sister, Frances E. Reardon of Buffalo; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit the donor’s choice.

Janis Carol Johnson, 60, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside committal of cremains is noon Sunday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Born Nov. 12, 1947, to Barbara Johnson Burkhardt, she was the fourth generation of Johnsons in Sheridan. She was adopted by her uncle, John Johnson, and his wife, Dottie. She was a notary public and a cat lover. Johnson was preceded in death by her mothers. Survivors include her father; a sister, D’Ann of Austin, Texas; a brother, Doug, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two uncles; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Born June 20, 1913, in Monarch, he married Frieda Hauf on March 4, 1938. They were married 70 years. He was a member of First Congregational Church and Elks Lodge 520. Survivors include his wife; a son, George E. of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Audrey Martinek of Moorcroft and Marilyn Grace of Sheridan; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Magdalena ‘Maggie’ Hendrickson

Magdalena “Maggie” Hendrickson, 91, of Redfield, S.D., and Sheridan died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services are 2 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. Interment will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Angels Cemetery in Presho, S.D. Born June 23, 1917, in Rurel Dodge, N.D., to Joseph and Sophie (Scherter) Klee, she grew up and attended schools in Rurel Dodge and Rurel Holliday, N.D. She married Harry Felix Hendrickson on Nov. 30, 1940, in Killdeare, N.D. She was a homemaker and worked on the family farm. Mrs. Hendrickson resided in Buffalo from 1940 to 1964, where she worked as a cook at the Rainbow Cafe and the Lariat Cafe. She lived in Lusk until 1968, moving to Hyattville, where she resided until 1972, when she returned to Lusk until 1976. She moved to Presho, then Redfield in 1992, living there until she moved to Sheridan this year. In the 1930s she was a member of the Youth Works Progress Administration. She was also a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Redfield. She enjoyed flower gardening, word-find puzzles, solitaire and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons; six brothers; four sisters; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is survived by a son, Larry, of Sheridan; a daughter, Gloria Moore of Wheatridge, Colo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Philip ‘Jim’ Kane

Philip “Jim” Kane, 72, Sheridan, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born May 23, 1936, in Sheridan to Dr. Philip James Sr. and Claire Kane, he graduated from Holy Name Catholic School. He graduated June 4, 1954, from the Abbey School in Canon City, Colo., and from the California College of Mortuary Science, receiving his embalmer’s license Dec. 17, 1959. He married Beverly Chieslar in Rapid City on Sept. 10, 1958, and the couple raised four children together. In 1970 he purchased Champion Funeral Home from Barbara Champion, which he operated until 1997. He also operated the ambulance service for a time during his ownership of the funeral home and served 28 years as Sheridan County coroner. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sheridan Joint Powers Ambulance Board, which he served on from November 1995 to June 1998. He was appointed by Govs. Ed Herschler and Mike Sullivan to serve on the Wyoming State Board of Embalming and sat on the board for three terms from 1985 to 1994. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 520, past president of the Wyoming Funeral Directors Association and Sheridan Country Club; and past member of National Selected Morticians, Sheridan Rotary, and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Kane was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas. He is survived by his wife; three sons, P.J. and John, both of Sheridan, and Randy of Story; a daughter, Julie Dowling of Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Nancy Conver of Salt Lake City; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald Roy Shaffer

Sheridan native Donald Roy Shaffer, 71, of Loveland, Colo., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at his home. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Kibbey Fishburn Funeral Home in Loveland. Born June 23, 1937, in Sheridan to Daniel Boone and Flora Olive (Whitford) Shaffer, he graduated from high school in Sheridan and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Natalia “Ruth” Hessenthaler on Aug. 31, 1957, in Chula Vista, Calif. After his military career, he worked in law enforcement and later as business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48 in Portland, Ore. He retired in 1992. He moved to Loveland from Bend, Ore., in August 2006. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his wife, spending winters in Arizona. He loved music and outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1051 in Loveland. He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael Shaffer of Oregon City, Ore; a daughter, Lynn Dompier of Loveland; two brothers, Dick of Victor, Mont., and Dannie of Cody; and three granddaughters. Richard ‘Jim’ Bordeaux

Richard “Jim” Bordeaux, 76, of Sheridan died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home. Interment of cremains with military honors will follow in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Born Sept. 29, 1931 in Sheridan to John and Anne Bordeaux, he graduated in 1950 from Sheridan High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the same year. He served until his honorable discharge in 1954. He married Dee Heil in Sheridan on Aug. 13, 1955. He was a partner in C&B Paint until his retirement in 1997. Mr. Bordeaux loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alex, Frank, Jack and Bud; and three sisters, Edna, Dorothy and Ruth. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sue Bordeaux Conrad of Phoenix; a brother, Walter Bordeaux of California; two sisters, Barbara Day of Arizona and Margaret Pearson of Washington state; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. Billie Kelsey, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at his Sheridan home. Per his request, cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born July 11, 1930, in Sheridan to Harry and Beulah Kelsey, he graduated from Sheridan High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army, which he made a career until his honorable discharge. He married Peggy Myers Farman on Nov. 15, 1986, in Las Vegas. He enjoyed going to casinos in Deadwood, S.D., and fishing. It was said he also enjoyed “tinkering” — building something out of nothing. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Barbara Berliner of Riverside, Calif., Gail Wasson of Carson City, Nev., and Vickie Duffy of Indiana; a son, Larry Kelsey; four stepchildren, Debbie Hanson of Sheridan, DeeVonne Degel of Story, Wade Farman of Powell, and Shana Eunivin of Granger; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Philip “Jim” Kane, 72, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Eleanor N. Milliron

Eleanor N. Milliron, 88, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. At her request, there will be no service. A reception is planned 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sheridan Senior Center. Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Gillette to Benjamin and Alta (Garrett) Laney, she grew up in Campbell County and graduated from Campbell County High School. She married Melvin Million on June 4, 1937, in Sturgis, S.D. They moved to the Wolf Mountains and operated a sawmill for several years. They moved to Story and operated a gas station until 1941, when they moved to Cheyenne. They returned to Sheridan County in 1947, where she worked for the Wigwam Bakery, Reimelt Nursing Home, then for the V.A. Medical Center for more than 20 years until she retired. She enjoyed volunteering at the Sheridan Senior Center and loved her cats. Mrs. Milliron was preceded in death by her husband in 1993; a sister, Esther Reynolds; and an infant brother, Arley. She is survived by a son, Larry Milliron of Sheridan; a daughter, Joyce Pelesky of Sheridan; a brother, Harley Laney of Las Vegas; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Harriette Anna Paul

Harriette Anna Paul, 86, Buffalo, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan following a long illness. Viewing is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Cathy Brown officiating. Interment will be at Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Born May 21, 1922, to Thomas and Stella (Miller) Lucas, she grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Lawrence Paul on Nov. 20, 1944, in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Tracy, Calif., where she worked for the Bureau of Reclamation until she retired. In 1989, they returned to Buffalo. After her husband died in 1990, she was cared for by her nephew, Jerry Lucas, and his wife, Sharon. She enjoyed attending her Bible study group, concerts, plays, and travel. She also cherished time with her family and her dog, Punky. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Despins, and a brother, Cliff Lucas. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Sheridan and elsewhere.

 

Pedro Sosa

Pedro Sosa, 58, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Pedro De Leon Sosa was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Huitron Durango, Mexico, to Domingo Montoya Sosa and Francisca De Leon Sosa. The family emigrated from Mexico in 1968. He moved to Sheridan in 1969, where he met his wife, Alice Trujillo. They married April 8, 1978, in Sheridan. At age 18, he began learning the construction industry under the tutelage of his father, eventually becoming lead foreman. He and his crews paved many highways in Wyoming. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, fishing, hunting, and working on cars with his father and his sons. He was said to have a wonderful voice, enjoyed by many who went to hear him sing. A member of the band Mountain Rose, his hobbies included remodeling homes, and he often helped family and friends refurbish their homes. He taught himself English and how to play the guitar. He was preceded in death by a brother, Erasmo (Raz) Sosa. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Theresa Sosa of Encampment; two sons, Jose Juan of Sheridan and Pedro of Billings; his parents of Sheridan; four sisters, Josie Brown of Sheridan, Silvia Kraft of Casper, Virginia Carlson of Springfield, Mo., and Maria Sosa of Sheridan; two brothers, Domingo Jr., and Antonio, both of Sheridan; a grandson; a step-granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Milton “Mel” Morris

Sheridan native Milton Morris, 66, Sheridan, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 in the Big Horn Mountains. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Felix Martinito officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Marine Corps League and the American Legion Post #7 in charge of military graveside rites. Born Jan. 28, 1942, to Paul and Mildred (Branch) Morris, he grew up on a ranch north of Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. He married Georgia Butler in 1959. They divorced in 1980. Mr. Morris enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Viet Nam. He was discharged in 1970 and moved to Denver where he was employed at the V.A. Medical Center. In 1981 he married Cindy Burrow. He was transferred to the V.A. in Miles City, Mont., in 1984. He retired in 1997 and returned to Sheridan. The couple traveled around the United States and spent summers in the Big Horn Mountains. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Phyllis Brown, Leona Reardon, Nina Morris and Margaret Morris. Survivors are his wife; son, James of Maryland; daughter Debra Frigon of Maryland; brothers Paul and Patrick of Denver; sisters Patty Shepard of Buffalo; Mary Wormeldorf and Mary Heimer of Denver; step brother Dana Wood; step sister Debbie Wood-Graves; and four granddaughters. John A. Lindell

John A. Lindell, 53, Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at his home. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born March 18, 1955, to A.E. and Virginia Lindell in Greybull, he was raised in Lander and graduated from Lander Valley High School. Mr. Lindell worked in Alaska and Louisiana before attending National College of Business at Rapid City. After graduation, he moved to Casper and started JAL Insurance Underwriters Inc.  He married Dawn Forsberg in 1990, and they resided in Casper. The family moved to Sheridan in 1997, when Mr. Lindell became general manager of Fremont Motors here. He was president of the National Automobile Dealers Association 20 Group. An avid bow hunter, he was proud of the Pope and Young bull elk he took with his bow. He enjoyed hunting with his son, backyard basketball with his daughter, and family vacations and activities together including golf, skiing, riding ATVs and boating. He was reportedly very active and generous in supporting the Sheridan community. Survivors include his wife; a son, Cameron; a daughter, Hilary; a sister, Jane Nolde; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Irene Wortman

Irene Wortman, 81, Gillette, father of Patty Colvin of Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper of natural causes. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Gillette with the Rev. Cliff Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. today with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Born Feb. 11, 1927, to Harvey and Eva “Rose” (Berkley) Hill on the family ranch, she was raised and educated in Gopher, S.D., and graduated from high school in Isabel, S.D. She married Maurice “Red” Wortman on Nov. 12, 1945, in Isabel. The couple made their first home in a sheep wagon before purchasing a ranch near Isabel, where they ranched for five years. She taught school in the Gopher area. Because of her husband’s road construction work, the family moved numerous times in 10 years throughout Montana, North and South Dakota and New Mexico. In 1960, they settled in McLaughlin, S.D., where they owned and operated Wortman Trailer Park. Mrs. Wortman also worked as an aide at the community hospital. In 1978, the family moved to Gillette, where she worked for Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. She retired to take care of their grandchildren and neighborhood children, becoming known as the “neighborhood grandmother.” In later years, she and her husband traveled south for the winters. Mrs. Wortman was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and  Council of Catholic Women and was an Avon sales lady. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, gardening, dancing, and spending time at the Senior Center and with her family. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Clarence and Richard, and one grandson. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Dennis of Deadwood, S.D., Larry of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Robert of Dilworth, Minn.; three additional daughters, Rhonda Wortman, Susan Kramer and Gina Grimm, all of Gillette; three brothers, Lester, Jess and Ted Hill; five sisters, Loretta, Darlene, Shirley, Dorothy and Rachel; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. William B. Bennett

William B. (Bill) Bennett, 74, of Sheridan and Newcastle, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Rock port, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be later in Sheridan. Born Nov. 5, 1933, in Sheridan to Bill and Hazel (Brandt) Bennett of Acme, he went to grade school in Acme and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952. After school, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a payroll clerk in San Diego and later in Wyoming as a reservist until 1963. While in San Diego he met Sheridan resident Jean Katherine Martini. He returned to Sheridan to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. in 1955, and the couple married Jan. 23, 1960.  In 1963 he moved with his wife and three sons to Newcastle, where he worked for Mountain Bell as a central office technician. A fourth son was born in Newcastle. In 1985, Mr. Bennett moved to Page, Ariz., to continue employment with U.S. West (later Qwest). He retired in December 1995 after 40 years with the telephone company. After the death of his wife in 1994, he married Judy Rinne of Page in 1995. They moved to Marysville, Wash., in 1997. In 2003, the couple purchased a motor home and traveled until his illness in the fall of 2006. He remained in Rockport until his death. He was active in his church in both Newcastle and Page. He was coach of Little League baseball and an avid fly fisherman and bowler. He also enjoyed hunting with family and friends and was a longtime member of the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Page Elks Lodge and served as a city councilor for the Lake Powell Mobile Home Park. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Steven. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Green Bay, Wis., and John of Sheridan; two stepdaughters, Sheryl Lockhart of Everett, Wash., and Christy Lindstadt of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Clifford C. Wiberg Jr.

Sheridan native Clifford Carl “Cliffy” Wiberg Jr., 71, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Born Feb. 2, 1937, to Clifford Wiberg and Catherine Cunningham, he served in the Air Force and was stationed in Japan from 1955-1958. He was preceded in death by one sister, Alicia Russell. Survivors include a son, James Steven Wiberg, and 12 siblings: Arland Wiberg, Sylvia Sadler, Carol DePoorter, Catherine Joan Anich, Regina Reese, Doretta Dunham, Monica Shockey, Bridget LaMotte, Christopher Wiberg, Nelia May, Richard Wiberg and Mary Geertz.

 

Katherine Louise Jordan

Katherine Louise McIntire Jordan, 75, of Sheridan and Billings, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. A service is planned 11 a.m. Saturday at Cremation and Funeral Gallery in Billings. Born July 31, 1933, to Ira and Ruth McIntire, she married Thomas R. Jordan on June 19, 1952, in Emmett, Idaho. Mrs. Jordan enjoyed cooking, parties, and any event with family, friends, great food and good conversation. She and her husband had just returned from their “Bucket List” trip to Idaho, where they were able to enjoy it all. They also stopped in Yellowstone Park, where they had worked for more than 25 years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Jordan. Survivors include five children, Doug Jordan, Vicki Nyback, Cheryl Jordan, Scott Jordan and Thomas Jordan; two sisters, Shirley McCullough and Linda Swickard; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack Lamb

Sheridan native Jack Lamb, 85, Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at Powers Cottage. Services were this morning at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings. Burial was private with military honors. Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Sheridan to Adolph and Ruby Grandbouche Lamb, he grew up on a ranch in Moorcroft. His father died when he was 7, and his mother raised him and two brothers on her own. The family moved to Sheridan, then Casper, where he graduated from Natrona County High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and graduated from gunnery school in Florida. He began overseas duty May 15, 1944, and took part in D-Day. On his 37th mission, his B-17 was shot down over Germany on Sept. 13, 1944. He was a prisoner of war in a German prison camp until May 2, 1945, when he was liberated. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with three oak clusters. He met Betty Calkins in Sheridan. They were married May 2, 1948, and raised four children. Mr. Lamb worked as an optician for Wolman Optical Co. from 1951 until he retired Dec. 31, 1988. He was a member of Yellowstone Country Club and spent many hours on the golf course, where he scored three holes-in-one. He also sponsored new golfers. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Kenny. Survivors include four children, Judy Lamb, Kasey Buehring, Sue Larson, and Jack Lamb; a brother, Marlin Lamb; and four grandchildren. August Joseph Chabot

August Joseph “Gus” Chabot, 97, Kaycee, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Born Oct. 15, 1910, to Leon and Louise Chabot on the family’s Powder River homestead in southern Johnson County, he grew up in the Sussex area and attended Sutton School on Powder River. He attended high school for two years in Kaycee and graduated in 1929 from Johnson County High School in Buffalo. He worked on the family ranch, eventually taking a job with the Esponda Co. herding sheep, among other ranch jobs. He owned and operated Gus’s Repair Shop on the ranch before joining the Army in November 1943.  Mr. Chabot served in France, Belgium and Germany in 1945. He returned to Wyoming after his discharge and continued to operate the repair shop. After his father’s death, he took over the family ranch with his sisters and continued to live and work in Kaycee until his death. He served 34 years on the Sheridan-Johnson REA Board and three years on the Powder River Energy Board. He was a member of the Sheridan Johnson County Pioneer Association, Powder River Grange, Powder River Soil Conservation Service, where he served as treasurer for 18 years, and the Wyoming State Grange, where he served as treasurer for 31 years. He was a life member of VFW, American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He loved to travel and attend conventions for the boards on which he served. He owned his own plane and was an avid aviator. He was preceded in death by three sisters. He is survived by a sister, May Chabot of Kaycee; five nephews and two nieces.

 

Mildred M. Allen

Mildred M. Allen, 97, of Sheridan and Cheyenne died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Lakeview Cemetery in Cheyenne with the Rev. Lyn King officiating. Born April 4, 1911, in Toledo, Iowa, to Wyatt Owen and Alice May (Paige) Thompson, she spent her early years in Iowa, moving to York, Neb., where she graduated from York High School in 1929. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from York College in 1934 and attended Gregg College Normal Course in Chicago, graduating in 1937. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1945 from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. She married Louis E. Allen on Feb. 21, 1957, in Ault, Colo. Mrs. Allen was a secretarial science instructor in high schools and colleges for more than 30 years, including 11 years at Sheridan College. She was also supervisor of clerical employment at the University of Wyoming for three years, retiring in 1970. A member of First Baptist Church in Cheyenne, she enjoyed cross-stitch, reading and spending time with her family. She was affectionately known as “Bibber” to her nieces and nephew. She was also known as a wonderful “second mother” to her stepdaughters and a loving grandmother to their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and a granddaughter. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Nancy Osterman-Rowland of Marion, Mich., and Shirley Korp of Clearmont; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew. Douglas L. Otteson

Douglas L. Otteson, 69, Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Cremation arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Born May 3, 1939, to Carl “Oscar” and Helen Otteson at the family home in Steele County, N.D., he farmed in his early years. He and his wife, Mary, were married Sept. 12, 1969, in Mayville, N.D. In 1980 he made a career move from farming to general contracting. He enjoyed woodworking, home improvement, current events and was a history buff. He was known as a dedicated and loyal husband and father. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Robyn Otteson of Owens Cross Roads, Ala., Heather Otteson of Huntsville, Ala., and Hope Otteson of La Porte, Texas; d two siblings, Selmer Otteson of Minto, N.D., and Janice Knudsvig of Clifford, N.D.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard ‘Lee’ Winters

Richard “Lee” Winters, 91, Sheridan, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Cremation will take place. Born Oct. 7, 1916, to N.E. and Ethel Winters in College Station, Texas, he was raised in Argentina and finished high school and college in Stillwater, Okla. He married Mary “Libby” Swaim on June 5, 1935. They moved to Wyoming in 1940 after graduation from Oklahoma State in agricultural engineering. Mr. Winters worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Soil Conservation Service in several Wyoming locations. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 after World War II started. The family moved in 1946 to Kalispell, Mont., where he worked on the Hungry Horse Dam. In 1952, he began a career with the foreign service building dams and irrigation projects in Chile, Haiti, Tunisia and Ecuador. In 1971, the couple retired to Big Fork, Mont., where he was active in civic affairs and the Masons. In 2001 he was elected to the Montana Masonic Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding service to many charities in the Big Fork area. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Ann Schellack of Baton Rouge, La.; a daughter, Judy Banks of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Al Winters of Story; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mildred Allen, 97, of Sheridan and Cheyenne, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Michael J. Zowada

Michael J. Zowada, 78, Sheridan, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Jan. 13, 1930, in Dietz to Michael and Anna Mentock Zowada, he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1951. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He married Helen Oelschlager at Holy Name Catholic Church on June 15, 1957. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge and Big Horn Mountain Marine Corps League. During his younger years, he enjoyed fast-pitch softball, playing for the Sheridan Beer team. He took pride in organizing the monthly meeting of surviving members and close friends associated with the 1946 Sheridan Bronc state championship football team. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and photography. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Loren and Merlin Zowada, both of Sheridan; a brother, Edward Zowada of Sheridan; two granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Webb Wright Baseball Foundation, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

 

Daniel J. Lubick

Daniel J. Lubick, 64, Sheridan, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and services will be in Rock Springs. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

 

Eleanor L. Kilpatrick

Eleanor L. Kilpatrick, 93, Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Born Oct. 21, 1914, in Kooi to Thomas and Edna Hustwaite McCoy, she attended grade school at Kleenburn until the fourth grade, transferred to Sheridan, and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1932. She married Glade Harold Kilpatrick in Hardin, Mont., on Feb. 18, 1933, and worked 30 years at the Veterans Administration hospital, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Elks Lodge. She enjoyed hiking in the mountains, family get-togethers, travel, crafts and ballgames. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Vivian. She is survived by two sons, Gerald G. Kilpatrick of Sedona, Ariz., and Dr. Richard L. Kilpatrick of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Wesley A. Steele

Wesley Albert Steele, 84, Gillette, father of Mickey Bradshaw of Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D., with Pastor Howie Baird officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Born March 29, 1924, at Kyle, S.D., to Carl and Minnie (Slea) Steele, he finished schooling and moved to Wessington Springs, S.D., where he worked in farming and ranching. He joined the U.S. Navy, and after his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Wessington Springs to farm and ranch. He married Edna (Fieldes) O’Banion, and they moved to Nebraska to ranch. They then moved to Oregon, where Mr. Steele was employed as a block layer. He returned to South Dakota in the early ’60s and worked in Eagle Butte and Rapid City in construction. He married Beverly Jean (Anderson) Dupris at Stephan, S.D., on July 29, 1961. They lived in the Rapid City area until the mid-’70s, when they moved to Wyoming. In the early ’90s they moved to Vacaville, Calif., and later to Reno, Nev., until returning to Wyoming in 1993. Mr. Steele was involved in building missile silos and interstate road construction as well as commercial and residential construction throughout his career. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Nyla and Pamela; a son, William; four brothers, Lesley, Leo, Tommy, and William "Ole"; and a sister, Kathryn "Dolly" Colwell. Survivors include four sons Robert, Wesley and Thomas Steele, all of Rapid City, and Kenneth Steele, Gillette; three additional daughters, Sheila Steele and Patsy Guettler, both of Gillette, and Sherry Tuttle, Adrian, Mich.; one brother, Charles "Buddy" Steele, Rapid City; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

James  Charles  Vines

James Charles Vines, 88, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Heri-tage Assisted Living in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was brother of June Warren and Bill Eisele, both of Sheridan. Born Feb. 24, 1920, in Gillette to James L. and Mattie Davis Vines, he grew up on a ranch and graduated from Gillette High School. He joined the Navy at age 17 and served in World War II, mostly on the East Coast and in the Atlantic Theater. He married Marian McKenzie, and they divorced. He married Jean Kendrick Jones in Reno, Nev., in 1972. They enjoyed traveling in their recreational vehicle to Arizona during winters and to other places of interest. Mr. Vines was a member of Mount Rose Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite in Reno and past patron of Nevada Chapter 13 Eastern Star. He also was past secretary of Buhl (Idaho) Kiwanis Club and Buhl Shrine Club. He belonged to Clear Lake Country Club and golfed until ill health forced his retirement. He loved gardening and sold vegetables to a Twin Falls farmers market. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale; a brother; and a stepson, Denny Jones. Survivors include his wife of Buhl; a son, Russell of New York; a daughter, Sandra McKay of Washington; a second sister, Nellie Watson; two additional brothers, Allen and Jean Eisele; three grandsons; four step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Farmer Funeral Chapel in Buhl with burial in West End Cemetery. Donations may benefit Shiner's Hospital.

 

Russell M. Maxwell

Russell Martin Maxwell, 60, Cheyenne, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, in Buffalo. He was father of Russell Martin “Marty” Maxwell Jr. and brother of Marci Buckley, both of Sheridan. Mass was celebrated this morning in Buffalo with burial there in Willow Grove Cemetery. Born Aug. 16, 1948, in Buffalo to Vernon “Whitey” and Jeanette Maxwell, he attended Johnson County High School and South Dakota State University in Brookings. He also taught engineering classes at SDSU. Mr. Maxwell worked 27 years as a communications specialist with Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne. He loved the mountains, hiking, fishing, and reading. A brother, Danny Maxwell, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a second son, Seth Adam Maxwell of Cheyenne; seven additional sisters, Mary Kay Stafford, Marilyn Maxwell, and Marti Markovsky, all of Buffalo, Monica Smithers of Arnold, Calif., Margo Trevino of Tracy, Calif., Melani Cole of Springfield, Mo., and Michele Peck of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two brothers, David Maxwell of Baltic, S.D., and Tom Maxwell of Beach, N.D. Memorials may benefit Johnson County Family Crisis Center or Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.
