Joseph Kumala’a

Joseph Kumala’a Jr., 89, of Sheridan died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be later in Hawaii. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Kumala’a was born May 27, 1913, in Hawaii to Joseph and Mary (Akana) Sr. He was a direct descendant of the royal Hawaiian families. He grew up and attended schools in Hawaii. He worked for the Coca-Cola bottler and other companies for several years. He married Carol Ferreira July 4, 1941, in Hawaii. They divorced in 1957. He worked in the Civilian Service with the U.S. Navy at several naval installations including Pearl Harbor and Barbers Point for 24 years, until retirement. He played guitar and sang Hawaiian music at events such as parties, weddings and anniversaries with a nine-member orchestra. He visited Sheridan in 1973 and decided to remain. He was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees, International Police Hall of Fame, Foundation National Safety Council, Honolulu Aquarium Society and American Police & Fire Benevolent Association. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Alvin R., of Kihei, Hawaii; a stepdaughter, Blanche Amps, of Hawaii; and one grandchild.

 

Nicholas Heil

Nicholas Heil, 91, of Sheridan died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at his residence. Services are pending. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Frank Bailey

Frank Bailey, 93, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial liturgy will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Bailey was born April 28, 1909, in Hood River, Ore., to Finley and Nellie (Willis) Bailey. He grew up and attended schools in Oregon and Washington. He worked on wheat ranches for many years. He married Susanna "Susie" Kawulok Nov. 25, 1954, in Spokane, Wash. They came to Sheridan in 1962, and he worked as a custodian for Holy Name School and later for Prill Manufacturing. He retired in the early 1970s. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and going for rides in the mountains and the country. He was preceded in death by three sisters, a brother and a son, Franklin John. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a brother, George, of Priest River, Idaho; two sisters, Ruby Meyer and Daisey McSweyn, both of Spokane; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Holy Name School.

Franklin C. Bailey, 93, of Sheridan died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Charles Hillberry

Charles O. Hillberry, 86, of Sheridan died Monday, May 27, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 1-5 p.m. today in Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery’s Masonic Section with Masonic graveside services by Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43. Mr. Hillberry was born June 14, 1915, to Henry and Gertrude (Taylor) Hillberry on the family ranch near Meeteetse. He grew up on the ranch and graduated from high school in Worland. He married Margaret Rea Nov. 11, 1956, in Powell. He ranched on the Mora Ranch in Wagon Mound, N.M., and the Pitchfork Ranch in Meeteetse. He came to Sheridan in 1965 and worked for the Beckton Stock Farm until retiring in 1986. He married Dorothy Roush in 1978 in Sheridan. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 8, the Kalif Shrine, Scottish Rite and Eastern Star Naomi Chapter 2. He enjoyed telling stories, the mountains, elk hunting, horses and his cat, Freddie. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Andrew of Sheridan; two daughters, Ellen Hepp and Wanda Huston, both of Sheridan; a stepdaughter, Claudia Paulsen of Billings; and eight grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kalif Shrine, Box K in Sheridan, or to First United Methodist Church.

Leslie Cook

Leslie "Les" Cook, 87, of Buffalo died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. Viewing and visitation will be 1-10 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. A private interment is planned in Sheridan’s Elks Cemetery. Mr. Cook was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Sheridan to Jesse E. Cook and Frances Van Ginder. He grew up and was educated in Decker, Mont. He worked as a ranch hand near Beckton. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1942 and fought in the Pacific Theater, seeing action at Tawara, Saipan and Tinian. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He returned to the Sheridan area and worked as a ranch hand until moving to Mills to work as an electrician. He was a member of the Elks Club, and for the last two years lived at the Veterans Home in Buffalo. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Jean Bohleen

Sheridan native Jean Todd Bohleen, 89, of Livingston, Mont., died Friday, May 24, 2002, in the Livingston Health & Rehab Center. Graveside committal services and burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Shorthill Cemetery south of Livingston with the Rev. Harlan Durgan of Livingston Congregational Church officiating. Arrangements are with Franzen-Davis Funeral Home of Livingston. Mrs. Bohleen was born Dec. 30, 1912, to James and Mary (Hamilton) Culver. Edward James Phillips, 73, of Thermopolis died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Canyon Hills Manor. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. He was born June 27, 1928, in Sheridan. Survivors include a sister, Mae Phillips Harper of Quartz Hill, Calif.; and several nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews and a great-grandnephew.

John Legoski

John G. Legoski, 72, of Sheridan died Monday, May 20, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. No services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Legoski was born March 1, 1930, on a homestead west of Sheridan to Joseph and Yadwiga (Legocki) Legoski. He attended schools in Sheridan and Eatonville, Wash. He worked in construction in Sheridan until he enlisted in the Navy, where he was a hospital corpsman on submarines. He retired from the Navy as chief petty officer after 22 years and returned to Sheridan, where he worked for Big Horn Coal as a miner until retirement. He enjoyed building things and remodeling houses. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, Joe, Paul and George. Survivors include a sister, Mary Nelson of Sheridan, and several nieces and nephews.

Elbert Chapin Jr.

Elbert Brayton Chapin Jr., 80, of Sheridan died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Michael Marquette officiating. Interment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D., with military rites by the Marine Corps League. Mr. Chapin was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Waterbury, Conn., to Elbert and Violet (McCaul) Chapin Sr. He grew up and graduated in 1940 from high school in Boonesville, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and participated in the Pacific landings at Guadalcanal, Pelilu and New Britain. He received the Purple Heart and Conspicuous Service medals. He was discharged in 1946. He married Virginia Mae Strobel in Boonesville in 1948. He operated heavy equipment during construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, Boyd Dam, Delta Dam and other projects. He came to Sheridan in 1991. He was involved with the Word of Grace Outreach, sending relief packages to the Ukraine, and was a member of the National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, history, genealogy, photography, rock collecting and jewelry making. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include two sons, David W. of Rome, N.Y., and Jay B. of Phoenix. Memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 3078, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Sheridan native Roberta Barkey Smith, 75, of Silt, Colo., died Thursday, May 16, 2002, according to her sister, Patsy Hoffman. Arrangements are with the family. Mrs. Smith was born in Sheridan to Rueben and Vivian Barkey. She grew up in Sheridan, attended Sheridan High School and was a longtime resident here. Survivors include two daughters; another sister, Marjorie Anderson; two brothers, John and Ralph; and two grandchildren.

Carl Edward Rasmussen, 63, of Zortman, Mont., died Sunday, May 12, 2002, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services will be in Malta, Mont., under direction of the Adams Funeral Home there. Burial of cremains will be in the Zortman Cemetery. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Rasmussen was born Oct. 13, 1938, in Montana to Lars and Irene (Tremblay) Rasmussen.

Joel Hardesty

Sheridan native Joel E. Hardesty, 64, of Winnemucca, Nev., died Saturday, May 11, 2002, of cancer. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Winnemucca. Albertson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service and burial will be in Billings at a later date. Mr. Hardesty was born Aug. 28, 1937, in Sheridan to Olin E. and Martha Barker Hardesty. He grew up in Sheridan and attended Sheridan High School where he played football. He was employed by Continental Keil, Pepsi Cola and Standard Oil Co. in Billings and later worked in the gold mines in Nevada for N.A. Degerstrom. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 3. He married Lila Soloman, and they had six children. He married Carmen Gibson in October 1977. He enjoyed trap shooting, camping, hunting, RVing and NASCAR. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, William, and brothers James Elliott and and John Evan. Survivors include his wife; children Susan Kautz of Huntley, Mont., Margaret Maddock of Bozeman, Mont., Jon of Great Falls, Mont., Mary Stewart of Sheridan, Beth Huck of Minden, Nev.; step-children, Deb Alden of Laurel, Mont., Holly Morasch of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jim Ringer of Virginia; a brother, Jan, of Billings; 12 grandchildren; and one step-grandchild. Thomas Duncan (Tex) Rogers

Thomas Duncan (Tex) Rogers Jr., 78, of Hemphill, Texas, died Friday, May 3, 2002, at his residences. Memorial services have been held at the family residence in Hemphill. Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Rogers was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Audrey (Shearin) and Thomas D. Rogers. He had lived in Sabine County 20 years and was also a former resident of Colorado and Dayton, Wyo. Rogers, a retired carpenter, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Margie, of Hemphill; sons George Shearin of Hopatconq, N.J., Terry of Laramie, and Roy of Fort Collins, Colo; a daughter, Shelley Barbula of Kleenburn; a brother, Donald of Nederland, Texas; a sister, Betty Cody, of Hemphill; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mary Madeline Hirdman, 84, of Lander died Monday, May 13, 2002, in Gillette. She was a member of Big Horn Baptist Church in Buffalo. Dwight Nelson

Dwight Nelson, 79, of Sheridan died Monday, May 13, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Nelson was born Aug. 18, 1922, to David and Iva (Crawford) Nelson in Dallas, S.D. After graduating from high school, he served in the Air Corps in 1944. He took the Folley-Bellsaw course on small engines in 1980 and 1981. He married Viva Welter Dec. 7, 1985, in Sheridan. Mr. Nelson liked to fish and hunt and enjoyed spending time in the mountains and gardening. He also enjoyed beadwork, rug-making and listening to music. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eagles, Oddfellows and Elks. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; brothers Delbert and Virgil; and sisters Ila Chaney, Verda Mueller and Adeltena Thorton. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a daughter, Pam Athey of Mintara, Neb.; a son, Dwight of Scottsbluff, Neb.; three stepdaughters, Ina Bennett of Peoria, Ariz., Judy Dickerson of White House, Tenn., and Pam Davison of Kingman, Ariz.; four stepsons, Jim Kincaid of Westcliff, Colo., John Kincaid of Los Angeles, Allen Blakeman of Bermuda and Chuck Blakeman of Sheridan; a brother, Johnny of Buffalo; a sister, Nellie Kern of Sheridan; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Carolyn F. Oedekoven, 101, of Gillette died Saturday, May 11, 2002 at her home of natural causes. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Gillette with the Rev. Joel Wright officiating. Burial will be in Gillette-Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Esther Thomas

CLEARMONT – Esther Marie Thomas, 89, of Clearmont died Monday, May 13, 2002. Vigil service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clearmont with Father Taylor officiating. A rosary service will follow. Full services will be in Rushville, Neb. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mrs. Thomas was born July 14, 1912, in Clearwater, Neb., to William and Josephine (Sands) Arthur. She grew up and was educated in Rushville and was a 1930 graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School. She received nursing education at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. She married Elmo Baumeister in 1940. He died in 1951. She married Jack Thomas in 1953. They lived in Rushville. Mr. Thomas died in 1976, and she moved to Clearmont in 1994. She was active in the Catholic Church. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed and Herman Arthur, and a sister, Clara VanKerrbrook. Survivors include three sons, Albert Baumeister of Colorado Springs, Arthur Baumeister of Arlington, Texas, and Alan Thomas of Fairview, Tenn.; a daughter, Judy Penn of Clearmont; a brother, Bill Arthur of Rushville; a sister, Mary Ann VanKerrbrook of Gordon, Neb.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Velda G. Leonard

Velda G. Leonard, 97, of Sheridan died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Masonic Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Leonard was born March 29, 1905, to Peter and Nellie (Hayden) Rogers in Athens, Ill. Her family moved to Wyoming for Velda’s health early on, and following high school, she married Henry H. Leonard July 18, 1923, in Sheridan. She and her husband homesteaded near Arvada and moved to Sheridan in the early 1930s. She worked several places, the last being the Elks Club as the pastry chef and kitchen manager. After her husband died in 1960, a number of students boarded with her. She loved people and her flowers and was delighted when people came by to view her garden. She was known for her beautiful handwork and crafts, making more than 100 afghans for gifts. She is survived by her daughter, Waneta Thirlwell of Sheridan; her son, Don Leonard, of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Grace Kuta

Grace E. Kuta, 75, of Sheridan died Friday, May 3, 2002, at her residence. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Very Rev. Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Kuta was born Dec. 15, 1926, in Acme to John and Hazel (Oelsehlager) Mates. Her parents divorced when she was young, and her stepfather, Joe Pawlus, became her true father. She attended beauty school after high school, graduating in 1942. She worked throughout her life as a beautician. She married John Crawford Sept. 14, 1945, in Hardin, Mont. They later divorced, and she married Earl Kuta Aug. 10, 1965, in Sheridan. He preceded her in death. She enjoyed gardening, canning, playing the game Aggravation and attending Mass with friends. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Holy Name Catholic Church. Louis Allen

Sheridan native Louis E. Allen, Ph.D., 76, of Cheyenne died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Life Care of Cheyenne. Funeral services were April 22 in Schrader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian High officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Allen was born July 19, 1925, in Sheridan to Louis and Jessie (Elliott) Allen. He was an engineering instructor at Sheridan College from 1955 to 1966. He worked for the state of Wyoming as water resources engineer and hydrologist until he retired in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Mildred May Thompson Feb. 21, 1957, in Ault, Colo. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Wyoming Engineering Society and a life member of American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Wyoming Water Development Association and the Wyoming Section of National Society of Professional Engineers. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shirley C. Mitchell of Upton and Nancy L. Osterman-Rowland of Marion, Mich.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Agnes Turner

Arvada native Agnes Turner, 77, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Memorial services were May 7 in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Turner was born Oct. 14 1924, in Arvada to Charles "Shorty" and Augusta (Okeson) Severance. She grew up in Arvada and lived in Colorado and Oklahoma before moving to Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Covert; two sons, Jeff and Tony; two brothers, Charles and Jesse; and a sister, Celia. Survivors include a sister, Mary Leath of Buffalo; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry Johns

Harry "Jack" Johns, 78, of Story died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, in St. George, Utah, following a short illness. Memorial services will be in June. The exact date will be announced later. Mr. Johns’ ashes will be interred in Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn. He was born June 25, 1923, in Story to Harry and Dorothy Nell Johns. He was a 1941 graduate of Sheridan High School. He worked for the Wyoming Game and Fish Department near Rock River and spent one summer at Glacier National Park. He enlisted in the military in 1942, and served as a B-25 tail-gunner with the 345th bombing group in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked for the first Fisheries Management crew in Buffalo in June 1950 and later worked at the Cheyenne office. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from the University of Wyoming, and taught biology for many years in San Jose, Calif., as head of the biology division. He also taught briefly at Sheridan Community College. He and his first wife, Rosemary, lived in Wyoming and California until her death. He married Gwendolyn (Hosburg) Hepp Feb. 14, 1981, in Buffalo. She died in 1994. He married Jeanne Kleene. They had homes in Buffalo and Nevada in addition to Story. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Jerry of Sheridan; six stepchildren, Vicki Harwood of Chandler, Ariz., Mike Hepp of Falls Church, Va., Doug Hepp of Worland, and Kelli Heppner, Jacki Powell and Mark Hepp, all of Buffalo; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Buffalo, Story Woman’s Club museum project or the Susie B. Lawrence Hospice of Buffalo.

Mary Manderfeld

Mary T. Manderfeld, 89, of Sheridan died Saturday, May 4, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Mrs. Manderfeld was born Feb. 22, 1913, to John and Anna (Sikora) Gorzalka in Dietz. She married Ted Manderfeld Oct. 11, 1936, in Wyarno. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, and loved to cook. She earned fame for her rye bread rolls, sauerkraut and pickles. She enjoyed birthday gatherings with friends and family reunions. She took an active interest in the Polish heritage of Sheridan County and was fluent in both English and Polish. She was preceded in death by her husband and five brothers, Joe, John, Tony, Frank and Mike. Survivors include three daughters, Angeline Davis of Moorcroft, Betty Gjerde of Grass Range, Mont., and Linda Ambo of Lone Pine, Mont.; three sons, Dick of Alexandria, Minn., Ted of Green River and Dave of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Paul and Al Gorzalka, both of Wyarno; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Grace Kuta

Grace E. Kuta, 75, of Sheridan died Friday, May 3, 2002, at her residence. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

John Flynn

Former Sheridan resident John D. Flynn, 53, died in December 2001 in Homer, Alaska.

Cremation has taken place.

Mr. Flynn was born July 22, 1948, in Spokane, Wash.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1971 and was a Vietnam veteran.

He lived in Sheridan County from 1977 to 1984, working for Sheridan Forest Products and Burlington Northern Railroad.

Survivors include a daughter, Anna of Beaverton, Ore.; and a sister, Vikki of Tigard, Ore.

Gary Bethurem

Gary Thomas Bethurem, 59, of Portland, Ore., died April 24, 2002.

He was brother of Arnold Fay and Conrad Bethurem, both of Sheridan.

Services are pending.

Mr. Bethurem was born Nov. 24, 1942, to Harrison A. and Geneva Brundage Bethurem.

His parents preceded him in death.

Other survivors include his wife, Nancy.

Elizabeth Daly

Sheridan native Harriet Elizabeth "Liz" Kerns Daly, 80, of Gillette died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Gillette with the Rev. Joel Wright officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Gillette.

Mrs. Daly was born Feb. 7, 1922, to John Wesley and Harriet (Dana) Kerns in Sheridan. She grew up on Pass Creek west of Parkman.

She attended school in Sheridan County and was a 1940 graduate of Sheridan County High School.

She attended the University of Wyoming and graduated in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics.

She taught high school from 1944-45 in Sundance.

She married James R. Daly June 20, 1945, at the Pass Creek Ranch where she had grown up. They lived at the Daly Ranch north of Gillette for 20 years before moving to Gillette.

She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, Campbell County CattleWomen and Wyoming CattleWomen Association, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and a homemakers club.

She was former member of Chapter V P.E.O. and a charter member of Chapter AS P.E.O. She was a Campbell County Public Library Board member and owner and officer of Daly Livestock.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Dana Kerns, and an infant son.

Survivors include her husband of Gillette; three children, John Michael Daly and Margaret "Peg" Smith, both of Gillette, and Mary Jill Daly of Laramie; two brothers, Burton Kerns of Yuma, Ariz., and Kenneth "Ken" Kerns of Pass Creek; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jane Wilson

Jane Wilson, 84, of Sheridan and formerly of El Paso, Texas, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Sheridan Manor.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Martin Funeral Homes in El Paso. Funeral services are 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.

Mrs. Wilson was born Feb. 21, 1918, to E.D. and Effie (Marsh) Hardman in Pueblo, Colo.

She married Norman V. Wilson Nov. 1, 1940, in Lincoln, Neb. She considered El Paso her home, but in 1998 came to Sheridan to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bob Johnson.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in El Paso, and attended Calvary Baptist Church while in Sheridan. She loved people and was active in church. She enjoyed gardening, crafts and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her son, Danny, of El Paso; two daughters, Norma Bourland of Minneapolis, and Nancy of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, William Hardman, of Tacoma, Wash.

Bessie George

Bessie George, 86, of Sheridan died Thursday, May 2, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Joseph Keys and Raymond Clark officiating.

Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mrs. George was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Lafayette, Colo., to Theodore and Aristia (Karavas) Lewis. She was a 1933 graduate of Lafayette High School.

She worked in several drugstores and pharmacies in Lafayette, Longmont, Colo., and Denver.

She married Dan George Oct. 6, 1935, in the Greek Orthodox Church in Denver. They moved to Sheridan and opened Dan’s New Method Shoe Shop at 1 S. Main St.

Mrs. George opened the Sav-Mor Surplus Store and Bessie’s Bargains in 1962. The couple also owned and operated Dan’s Western Wear.

Mr. George preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Ted of Sheridan; three daughters, Deanna George and Eleanor Chadwick, both of Sheridan, and Elaine Nalee of Burgaw, N.C.; a sister, Helen McMahan of Lafayette and Sheridan; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Carole Wilhelm

Sheridan native Carole Wilhelm, 61, of Wheatland died Friday, May 3, 2002, at her home after a battle with cancer.

Vigil will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wheatland.

Funeral liturgy will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Father Jan Santich as celebrant.

Interment will be in Wheatland Cemetery. Platte Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

Mrs. Wilhelm was born Feb. 16, 1941, in Sheridan to Daniel A. and Elma Maxine (Davis) Mooney. She grew up in Sheridan and attended cosmetology school here after graduating from high school in 1959.

She moved to Wheatland in 1961.

She married Jake Edward Wilhelm Feb. 16, 1963.

She owned and operated the Crystal Door Style Salon 37 years, until she retired in 1998.

She was a member of Council of Catholic Women and the Cowboy Joe Club, and enjoyed attending University of Wyoming football and basketball games.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Heidi Lynn of Denver; a son, Michael Patrick of Wheatland; her mother of Sheridan; three sisters, Michele McDonald of Casper, Patricia Shearin of Laramie and Helen Hendrickson of Sheridan; three brothers, David Mooney of Chicago, John Mooney of Topeka, Kan., and Daniel Mooney of Carson City, Nev.; and two grandchildren.

She married Eugene Watt in 1965; he died in 1969 She married Paul Landreth Feb. 25, 1970, in Sheridan. She was a businesswoman as well as wife and mother, and was president of the Jefferson PTA. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gary Smith. Survivors include her husband of Casper; a son, George Watt of Casper; two brothers, Jerry Smith of Keystone, S.D., and Larry Smith of Sheridan; a sister, Sally Richter of Washington; and two grandchildren.
