The past few weeks, we had some stowaways get in the house. At least one made the journey and then made some friends once he got settled in.
Bada-bing bada-boom, now we are just neck deep in fruit flies.
When it comes to the lower-tier pests, I would put fruit flies right at the top of the annoying list. They fly with abandon right near your mouth, kamikaze into your food and drink and are generally just super annoying.
Instead of just living with them until winter or until death from natural causes, I went on the offensive.
I decided to try a few variations of traps I found online until I found a version that was a real killer. What ended up working the best was raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, soap and hot water.
It was like some heavenly beacon they could not refuse. Once they caught wind of this deadly mix, they flew right in just to get stuck in the bubbles and die.
It was a very satisfying thing to watch; you could sit there and see it in action.
After a few days of that sitting out on the countertop, we have been fruit fly free. It is an amazing trap you can make at home for pennies.
Fruit fly trap
1 pint glass
1 cup apple cider vinegar (the raw unfiltered kind worked great)
1 hefty squirt of dish soap
Hot water to fill
1. In an empty pint glass, squirt your dish soap into the bottom and add the apple cider vinegar.
2. With the water as hot as you can get it out of the tap, blast the cider and soap in the glass to make bubbles, fill until the bubbles are to the top.
3. Enjoy the show!
